Be sure to catch the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Janse van Rensburg won Striker of the Tournament, with the Best Goalkeeper award going Grey’s to Eben Joubert. It was quite a surprise that van Rensburg was not included in the SA Schools-side.

Collegiate Girls wanting to prove themselves at Fairtee Super 12

This week, Collegiate girls will travel from Gqeberha to Bloemfontein to participate in the Fairtree Super 12 Tournament, hosted by Oranje Meisieskool in Bloemfontein from the 9th to 12th of August.

Last year, Collegiate unfortunately ended in the lower half (ranked 9th) at the end of the tournament. However, this year could prove more successful with Collegiate Girls having six players selected for the Eastern Province team for the SASHOC 2023 Tournament (U/18 A: Elizabeth Porter, Kyla Nienaber, Tiara Finnis, Gabriella Tait, Alulutho Adams. U/18 B: Jenna Peltenburg.  U/18 non-travelling reserve – Hannah Griffin)

Collegiate last met up against Oranje Meisieskool for their annual derby, losing 4-1. However, Collegiate took on Eunice on the same weekend and overcame Eunice 2-0 which bodes well for captain, Elizabeth Porter and the Collegiate Girls going into the Super 12 Tournament.

  • SACS against Paul Roos could be the game of the season

SACS against Paul Roos could be the game of the season

SACS and Paul Roos Gimnasium are probably the best two schoolboy hockey teams in South Africa this year.

They will face each other this Friday from 19:00 at the Maties Astro in Stellenbosch in a clash which is labeled as the Match of the Season.

SACS are the top schoolboy side this year, but have lost against Paul Roos (2-3) earlier in the season during the annual Hibbert Shield final in Gqeberha.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport SchoolsWatch Live.

SACS, under the coaching of James Peverley (ex-Grand Challenge men’s first team coach) have thus far had immense success. SACS, who come of a very successful European Tour, in April, has been in prolific form since their return, scoring 73 goals in their 13 matches since then, and conceding only 10.

Paul Roos is on a 20 game unbeaten streak so far.

Two of the most exciting forwards in the country,  Litha Kraai (SACS) and Reuben Sendzul (PRG) will provide real entertainment with speed and skill. Zeke Hougaardt and Michael Roydon-Turner, the respective captains, will only be happy with the best efforts from their charges.

Paul Roos’s solid defense, led by Izak de Wet,  Ryan Williams and Louan van Zyl, will do their utmost to keep Kraai, Rowan Davids and Dean Carrick  out. The good defense and quick turnovers from Wayne Mandabva, Mike Cowan and the nippy Ozair Pillay, will put the Paul Roos midfield under pressure, but Josh Smith, Christo Swanepoel and Paul Roos (yes, his name), will keep them on their toes.

The battle between arguably the two best schoolboy goalkeepers, SACS’s SA Schools keeper, Rogan Stirk with his solid textbook defense, and the exiting Beor van Reenen from Paul Roos, playing a very unorthodox keeper role, will provide real entertainment and a challenge for the attackers.

Expect a fast-paced match from SACS, with a high press, quick turnovers, exceptional passing and a strong midfield, to put pressure on the Paul Roos defense. SACS’s attacking flair, will be pitted against the solid defense of Paul Roos in what promises to be an epic battle!

The nine goals conceded in their 20 matches thus far, gives testimony to their defensive prowess, whilst their 74 goals showing they are no slouches on attack.

    The teams:

SACS: Rogan Stirk, Luke Salters, Mike Cowen (captain), Litha Kraai, Mikey Royden Turner, Josh Opperman, Ozair Pillai, Dean Carrick Liam Haupt, Ray Bonnet, Cole Allam, Steph Meyer,  Rowan Davis, Wayne Mandabva.

Paul Roos Gimnasium: Beor van Reenen, Louan van Zyl, Joshua Smit, Jake Downie, Izak de Wet, Ryan Williams, Zeke Hougaard, Christo Swanepoel, Connor Morrison, Reuben Sendzul, Aon Hendricks, Barend Geldenhuys, Matthew Raymer.

Grey College digging deep to face Affies this Friday

Grey College will be hosting Affies this Friday at 18:00 in an inter school match up heavily weighted.

Be sure to keep updated on the SuperSport Schools website at www.supersportschools.com.

The clash against Affies will be a tough one for Grey College, having travelled to and from Paarl in the Western Cape, causing disruptions in the team’s practice schedule due to much of the team being affected physically by the wet weather and travelling time.

The last time these schools faced each other, Grey College walked away with bragging rights having defeated Affies 3-1.

Affies, however, will be looking for their revenge and the less-than-optimum Grey side forecasts rocky waters for the team from the City of Roses.

“There is a lot hanging in the balance, that we need to put back, and establish our strength over the whole, entire program,” says Wayne Coetzee, head of hockey at Grey College.

    The teams:

Grey College: Roan Janse van Rensburg (captain), Eben Joubert, Gerrie Greyling, Jayden Leach, Jordan Verster, Wian du Plooy, Duncker Hohls, Dayne Kitching, Samu Lephoto, Luke Mosala, Dunrich Hoffmann, AC Delport, Handre van Staden, MJ Bam, Botha Barnard, Luhan Prinsloo.

Affies: Owen Kleinhans, Jacques Lamprecht, Liam de Waal, Wian van Rooyen, Uys Prinsloo, Hendrik Combrink, Thato Mamogale, Louw du Preez, Guihom Mouton, Wimpie Pohlman, Wian Boshoff, Wouter Cloete, Kyle Cronje, Henri van Tonder, Eno Swart, Wian van Schalkwyk.
