The South African Schools Hockey Association (SASHOC) on Saturday named star-studded SA u18 A and B squads after the boys’ final of the SASHOC National Week, in Pietermaritzburg.

Last year’s champions, Western Province A, dominated the boys’ A-section and claimed their fifth straight title after defeating Southern Gauteng A 2-1 in the title decider.

The boys from the Western Cape were rewarded for their excellence with seven players being included in the u18A side.

To no one’s surprise, Litha Kraai finished the week as the top goal scorer with 12 goals and also scooped up the Player of the Tournament accolade.

He was named in the team alongside his Western Province teammates, Zachary Gibbon and Joe Gitlin, and his SACS teammates Aidan Hughes, captain Jo le Roux, Maseko Mohlodi, and Reece Theunis.

Only three players from Southern Gauteng A cracked the nod. Zeyad Davids, from Parktown Boys’ High, was a top performer for Southerns throughout the week and was rewarded for his consistent excellence.

The St David’s Marist Inanda duo of goalkeeper Khotso Mabona and midfielder Matteo Stipcevich were also named in the 16-player squad.

Northern Gauteng A, who finished in an impressive third place, had their co-captains, Luken Brunette and Kabo Mulaudzi included, along with goalkeeper Owen McMenamin.

Hilton College’s Reagan Mudau and Jayden Roux, from KZN Inland A, were called up, too, as was Tyrique Cloete, from KZN Coastal A.

Christo Swanepoel is the only representative in the A-team from Boland A, while Neilyandro van Schalkwyk represents Southern Free State A.

The team will assemble at Kearsney College for a high-performance camp from 9-12 October.

The Director of Hockey at Kearsney, Keegan Pearce, has been appointed the SA u18 head coach. He will be assisted by Robin Jones, with Michaelhouse’s Jason Syce taking on the role of manager.

The convenor of selectors in the u18 age group was Igsaan Ajam, assisted by Julian Hykes and Colin Fielding, who was responsible for the goalkeeper selections.

“Excellence” – That is the word Western Province u18A head coach Jody Erasmus used to describe his side after they successfully defended their SASHOC National Week title in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

Province, better known as the Blocks, defeated Southern Gauteng A 2-1 in the final, on the iconic Pape’s AstroTurf, at Maritzburg College.

The boys from the Western Cape put together a clean record, going undefeated and untied in Pool A, securing a maximum of 15 points while scoring a whopping 31 goals in only five matches.

Then, in the semi-finals, on Friday, they met Northern Gauteng A and put five past them, courtesy of a Litha Kraai hat-trick and further goals from Zachary Gibbon and captain Jo le Roux.

Southern Gauteng, meanwhile, brushed off Western Province B 3-1 in their semifinal to set up a repeat of the 2023 final, which was played in Bloemfontein.

Western Province were the hot favourites to win after they outplayed Southerns 5-1 in one of their pool matches.

It was a dogfight early on, with both sides trying to exert pressure on their opposition, but their defensive systems held firm.

After 12 minutes, though, Province opened the scoring through their skipper, Jo le Roux, who converted from a penalty corner opportunity to break the deadlock.

Aidan Blatch had a chance to pull one back for Southerns when he received an inviting ball inside the circle with an open net in front of him, but he fired wide.

It was even stevens for the rest of the half. After the break, though, the tempo of the contest went up a notch.

The battle became increasingly heated, with both sides becoming more aggressive. Discipline cost Southerns, with captain, Ethan Kapanda, and Juan Martin being shown yellow cards within a minute of each other.

Province, however, failed to capitalise on their two-man advantage and it was still only 1-0 as they headed into the final chukka.

They started the last quarter brightly, though, and won a penalty corner. With the game on the line, they turned to their dangerman, Litha Kraai, and he fired a thunderbolt into the back of the Southerns’ goalbox to extend the Western Province lead.

Southerns had issues with their goalkeeper, Khotso Mabona, who went down injured a couple of times, but, at the other end of the turf, they pulled one back through Kapanda, who converted a penalty stroke.

With the gap back to only one goal, Southerns pushed hard to find an equaliser, but Province kept them in check and held on for the win.

The victory was a fifth in succession for Western Province at the SASHOC National Week. They last lost a match at the tournament way back in 2018.

“We are very grateful, firstly, to have the opportunity [to compete for the title] and for the team we have – the players, doctor, staff, and parents,” coach Erasmus told SuperSport Schools Plus after the match.

“We have a special group, and we prided ourselves on our values, and it showed.

“I think it was a tight game for us, but also a very good test. Southern came hard at us, and we enjoyed it.

“Our focus was on defence because that wins championships, and that was the mindset for the boys.”

Erasmus was not involved in the Western Province coaching setup last year and last took charge of a provincial side in 2023. Back then, he was the head coach of the u16A side that won gold in Bloemfontein.

On a personal level, winning the u18 SASHOC National Week title was a massive achievement for him, he admitted.

“This is very big for me. My last experience of u18 was in 2016, before I moved with the u16 boys in 2023.

“It’s a special opportunity, not just for the coaches but for the players. It’s such a big part of a young player’s life, and to be part of that facilitation and development is amazing.

“But it also tests me as a coach. It’s so special to be here and represent Western Province as a coach again.”

Eastern Province A finished in seventh, above Boland B, while a 4-2 win for KZN Inland A against Southern Free State A secured the hosts ninth place.

The last time Southern Gauteng A was in the boys’ final of the u18 SASHOC National Week was in 2023, when they took on Western Province A for the title in Bloemfontein.

In that clash, Gauteng showed fight and resilience, but they were outplayed and defeated 3-1 by a star-studded Province side.

Two years on, the boys from Johannesburg will have another crack at Province after booking their spot in the 2025 title game at Maritzburg College.

The final takes place on Pape’s Astroturf, and pushback is at 11:45.

The Kyle Reddy-coached side defeated Western Province B 3-1 in the semifinals the disappointment of missing out on the final as was the case last year. They went on to finish fourth.

Southerns put together an impressive run in Pool A and finished in second place with four wins from their five outings.

They claimed the scalps of Eastern Province A (1-0), KZN Coastal B (5-1), Boland B (8-1), and KZN Inland A (2-0). However, they suffered a hefty 1-5 loss to WP.

The second-place finish in the pool guaranteed them a semi-final spot against an unpredictable WP B side that’s made waves throughout the tournament.

It was far from a walk in the park for Southerns. They found the going a tough slog in the first half despite dominating possession.

They had two peanlty corners awarded, but their execution let them down while the Province B defence held firm. Aidan Blatch also had a golden chance in front of the goal, but his shot went wide.

It was 0-0 at the halfway point, but that changed in the third chukka.

Province B brought the game to life when Jacques van Dyk converted from the top of the circle early in the chukka to set up an interesting finish.

That goal appeared to touch a nerve in the Southerns’ camp, and they responded almost immediately through their captain Ethan Kapanda.

The floodgates opened after that, and Zeyad Davids, who is in the form of his life, scored an outrageous Tomahawk to make it 2-1.

Juan Martin then took the outcome out of Province B’s reach in the final chukka after a smart PC variation with Blatch.

Speaking to SuperSport Schools Plus afterwards, coach Reddy gave his assessment of the match: “I think Western Province B came out well today,” he said.

“We struggled to break them down, and they kept us at bay with their scramble defence, and that took away a lot of opportunities from us.

“At the end of the day, with the coaching staff we have in Woody (Anthony Woodhouse) and Andy (Andy Aldred) and the group of boys we have, we showed grit and determination.”

Reddy said his halftime team talk was about getting the boys to stick together, press as one unit, and implement the game plan. It worked.

He’ll be hoping for a similar performance on Saturday against Western Province A.

“We have a point to prove against Province after coming out of the group with them and them beating us.

“We will prepare as best as we can and give it our best tomorrow.,” he said.

While Southerns were made to sweat for their semi-final win, Province posted a comfortable 5-0 win over a gutsy Northern Gauteng A in the second semi-final.

Coach Jody Erasmus’s side continued on their merry winning way after powering past their opponents in the group stages.

Litha Kraai netted a hat-trick, with two of his goals coming from penalty strokes, while captain Jo le Roux sent a thunderbolt drag flick past Northerns’ keeper Owen McMenamin, who has had a tournament to remember. Zachary Gibbon completed the dubbing in the 53rd minute.

“The big focus for us in this game was on short corner defence,” coach Erasmus said after the game.

“We knew Northerns had a threat there, and we must respect the ability and talent of Luken Brunette, but I think our ‘keeper, Marley Musasa, took charge well and had the guys running good lines.

“As much as we wanted to score, we understood the game might come down to how well we defended, and that was key for us.”

Province is hunting a fifth straight SASHOC National Week title, but they face the tricky task of beating Southern Gauteng for a second time.

Western Province claimed a convincing 5-1 win when they met earlier in the tournament, but Erasmus believes a different challenge awaits his team in the final.

“It’s easy to focus on the opposition because we’ve played them before, but we understand any team can give you a different look and energy in a final,” he said. “Hence, we want to focus on ourselves.

“We can’t over-prepare or under-prepare. We will want to score early and dictate the tempo of the game because Southerns are quick, and we’ll want to slow them down.”

Day 5 | Results and scorers

The SASHOC National Week, currently underway in Pietermaritzburg, has delivered some pulsating action, cracking goals, and upsets, and, on Thursday, four teams booked their places in the semifinals of the tournament.

The defending champions, Western Province (WP) A, will face Northern Gauteng A at 15:05 on Friday for a place in the final, while the tournament’s surprise package, Western Province B, has a date with Southern Gauteng A at 13:40 on Pape’s AstroTurf, at Maritzburg College.

The action will be LIVE on SuperSport Schools and DStv Channel 216.

Paired in Pool A, WP and Southern Gauteng A cruised into the last four after dominating their opponents during the group stages.

After a shaky start where they defeated Boland B 3-0 on Monday, Province upped the ante and ran riot against Southerns (5-1), Eastern Province A (8-1), KZN Coastal B (10-2), and KZN Inland A (5-1).

By the end of the pool stages, coach Jody Erasmus‘s young guns had scored a whopping 31 goals while conceding only five.

They were clinical in almost every facet of their game, took their opportunities well, and punished their opponents with relative ease at times.

There were also moments of individual brilliance from Litha Kraai, while the rest of the team chipped in with strong performances, match in and match out.

They finished atop Pool A with the maximum haul of 15 points, and coach Erasmus was pleased with his side’s effort after their final pool match win against KZN Inland A on Thursday.

“We treated this match against Inland as a nice test and took it as if it were a quarterfinal,” he explained.

“We respect the talent Inland has. Two years ago, these players faced each other in the u16 final, so we know they have talented players.

“For us, it’s about getting better each game and improving, and I think we did well. It was a physical battle, and it had a couple of interesting decisions, but it’s another step in the process because our goal was to get 15 points in the group stages.

“With that said, we know that these points won’t count tomorrow because the knockout hockey starts, and we’re excited for that.”

Progressing into the last four with Province from Pool A is Southern Gauteng A, a team that’s finding its mojo after a slow start.

Coach Kyle Reddy‘s side opened their campaign with a nervy 1-0 win over Eastern Province A on Monday.

However, besides the 1-5 loss to Western Province A, they’ve dismantled every other team they’ve faced, and on Thursday, they put five past KZN Coastal B.

The boys from Johannesburg also scored eight against Boland B on day three, and coach Reddy feels his side has improved.

“Apart from the results, we have been focusing on our performances and getting better with every game,” he told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“We are connecting a little bit better and polishing what needs to be polished. We played well in the 8-1 win against Boland B, but I think we got a bit lucky with their keeper being injured.

“We set out to make the semi-finals, and that’s a job done, and now the real tournament starts.”

Coach Reddy’s side faces an unpredictable Western Province B side for a place in the final, while Western Province A takes on Northern Gauteng A.

Province B and Northerns impressed in Pool B and did just enough to avoid a dramatic final day.

The boys from the Western Cape defeated Northerns 1-0 on day four, and that meant they finished in top spot with 12 points after four wins and one defeat.

Northerns, meanwhile, failed to beat Southern Free State A by three or more goals in their second game of the day, which they needed to do to finish in first place. Still, they booked a semi-final showdown with Western Province A by winning 3-2.

How did the four semi-finalists fare at the 2024 SASHOC National Week?

Western Province A – Last year, Western Province A won the SASHOC National Week. They went unbeaten in the group stages and defeated Boland A 3-2 in the final.

Southern Gauteng A – It was a tricky tournament for Southerns in 2024. They reached the semi-finals but went down to Boland A. In the bronze medal match, they suffered a 0-1 loss against KZN Coastal A and, as a result, finished in fourth place.

Northern Gauteng A – Northerns entered the 2024 event as one of the underdogs. They had a promising campaign and, on the opening day, caused shockwaves by beating KZN Inland A. They followed that with a 1-1 draw against Eastern Province A. After that, though, their campaign went downhill, and they ended in a disappointing 10th place.

Western Province B – It’s funny how much matters can change in a year. This time last year, Province B were fighting for their lives after a horrendous showing in the group stages. They were at the bottom of their pool and played in the relegation match against Border A. They dug deep to edge out the Eastern Cape outfit 5-4 to retain their place in the A-section. A year later, they are in the semifinals of the SASHOC National Week after winning their pool. Crazy!

When the Western Province u18B boys arrived at the SASHOC National Week – hosted by Maritzburg College and St Anne’s DSG – their primary objective was simple: avoid relegation.

They were drawn in Pool B alongside Northern Gauteng A, Boland A, Southern Free State A, Southern Gauteng B, and KZN Coastal A.

Peninsula or Pens, as they’re affectionately known, had a disastrous start to the tournament, going down 0-5 against Boland A on the opening day.

That result served to inspire rather than demoralise coach Gary Stevens’ charges, who understood the challenge of competing against A-teams.

On day two, Pens looked like a different outfit. They balanced the ledger with a convincing 5-0 victory over Southern Gauteng B, and that proved to be the start of something special.

When they defeated KZN Coastal A 2-1 in their next outing, they started to believe and played with vigour, confidence, and aggression.

On Wednesday, the Western Cape boys claimed the scalp of a Grey College-laden Southern Free State A side, winning 3-0, and they led Pool B overnight with nine points and one game remaining.

Their remaining fixture, on Thursday, was against Northern Gauteng A. Prior to their showdown, Northerns, who also faced Southern Free State on Thursday, were unbeaten and needed at least one point to progress to the semifinals.

It was a close encounter, and it came down to fine margins, with both teams defending strongly and not allowing many goalscoring opportunities. But Cameron Cordeiro made the difference with a 54th minute strike for Pens to seal a tightly contested 1-0 win.

“I’m massively stoked for the boys,” head coach Gary Stevens told SuperSport Schools Plus after the match.

“This group has been amazing. The boys are good together, and as a coach, I’m enjoying the experience with them.”

Reaching the semifinals of the tournament is a massive bonus for Pens, whose primary focus was staying in the A-Section.

To provide some context, Western Province B narrowly avoided relegation in 2024, edging out Border A 5-4 in the 11th/12th playoff in Bloemfontein to retain their A-section status.

In the past five editions of the tournament, they’ve also been relegated, so to bounce back in emphatic fashion is no mean feat, said coach Stevens.

“Initially, as a Pens’ side, you want to avoid relegation, and you want to play for the top five, and that was our objective coming here,” he said.

“This team has had some tough tournaments in the past, and we just wanted the guys to believe in themselves and enjoy the tournament.

“We are taking each game as it comes. Every day brings a different challenge, and we take those head-on and focus on the next goal and objective,” he added.

Western Province B will take on Southern Gauteng A in the semifinals, while Northern Gauteng A is set to battle Western Province A.

Developments in Pool A and B on Day 4

    Pool A

Western Province A entered day four with their spot in the last four already secured after racking up maximum points from their previous outings.

Southern Gauteng A, meanwhile, had one foot in the door after a big 8-1 win on Wednesday over Boland B, who were forced to play without a goalkeeper after Joe van Coller was injured in an upset win over KZN Inland A.

On Thursday, Southerns outplayed KZN Coastal B 5-1 to secure second place in the group.

Boland B, after gaining promotion by winning the B-Section last year, finished in third place, above Eastern Province A, KZN Inland A, and KZN Coastal B.

    Pool B

There were several permutations at play in Pool B as Thursday dawned and an early match proved pivotal.

When Southern Free State A played to a 1-1 draw with Boland A, both teams were taken out of the running for a semi-final place.

Boland finished with seven points after five matches, while Southern Free State, despite having a game in hand, still couldn’t get to nine points and trouble Western Province B and Northern Gauteng A, who occupied the top two places.

After going down to Province B, Northerns still had a chance to finish atop Pool B, but they needed to defeat Southern Free State A by three or more goals in their second match of the day. That proved to be a hill too high to climb and they came away with a narrow 3-2 win.

Boland A, just like their B-side, finished in third, above KZN Coastal A, Southern Free State, and Southern Gauteng B.

The 2025 SASHOC National Week has reached its halfway mark, and coaches, spectators, and parents are calculating where the teams they support could potentially finish.

By the close of play on Wednesday, day three of the tournament, only Western Province (WP) A and Northern Gauteng A remained unbeaten.

WP sits comfortably atop Pool A with 12 points after four matches, while Northerns occupies second spot in Pool B with nine points from three outings, and with two matches in hand.

The third day of the tournament, which is being hosted at Maritzburg College, in Pietermaritzburg, and St Anne’s DSG, in Hilton, delivered some scintillating action, upsets, and a bucketload of goals.

Western Province A, after beating Boland B 5-0 and Eastern Province A 8-1, faced their toughest test yet against an unpredictable but highly regarded Southern Gauteng A side.

The clash was labelled a potential top-of-the-pool decider, with the winner expected to progress comfortably to the semifinals.

It was a fiery contest from the get-go, with Gauteng piling early pressure on their opponents and winning a short corner.

Their set piece execution was lacking, however, and coach Kyle Reddy’ boys were punished only minutes later when Litha Kraai opened the scoring in the seventh minute.

Southerns, with their large contingent of supporters cheering them on, weren’t going to lie down and they responded in the 19th minute through Zeyad Davids. That, however, was their only goal of the game.

Western Province took charge, ran wild, and tore through Southern Gauteng. In the third chukka, they scored three goals in quick succession, with Kraai netting from a penalty corner, followed by strikes from Joe Gitlin and Daniel Fisher, which made it 4-1.

Province was not yet done, though, and it was that man, again, Kraai, who showed off some insane skills inside the circle to complete his hattrick.

Coach Jody Erasmus’s side then took on KZN Coastal B in their second match in the early evening.

It was one-way traffic, with WP romping to a 10-2 win, which included four goals from captain Jo le Roux. That one-sided victory ensured Province’s passage into the semifinals, and it also ensured they will finish in first place in Pool A.

While WP dominated on Pape’s Astro, Northerns also kept their chance of reaching the semifinals alive with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Southern Gauteng B.

Coach Steven Paulo’s side had impressed on day two with a 3-1 victory against Boland A, and they picked up from where they left off.

Luken Brunette was on the scoresheet once again, and Andrea Clerihew made it two.

The boys from Pretoria have a tricky doubleheader on day four when they face Western Province B and Southern Free State A. The Province B team is atop Pool B but has played a game more than Northerns.

A win in either of those contests will guarantee Northerns a place in the last four.

    Permutations

    Pool A

Western Province is already through to the semifinals, but there are still spots up for grabs in both Pools.

In Pool A, Southern Gauteng A did themselves a huge favour by beating a Boland B side that played without a goalkeeper 8-1.

After three days of action, they occupy second place with nine points. A win in their final match of the group stages against KZN Coastal B will see them progress to the top four.

Boland B, meanwhile, is in third place with six points and will face Eastern Province A on Thursday.

If Boland wins that clash and Southern Gauteng loses, Boland would likely still miss out on goal difference after conceding eight against Southerns.

KZN Inland A, KZN Coastal A, and Eastern Province are all out of the running.

    Pool B

As previously mentioned, Western Province B is in first place in Pool B ahead of Northern Gauteng, who have two games in hand.

Province B tackles Northerns on day four. If they win, they’ll be through to the semis.

The equation for Northerns is quite simple. They need two points from their remaining two matches to progress. Western Province B and Southern Free State will challenge them.

Southern Free State could also sneak into the top two if they win both their matches on Thursday, but they would also need other results within the group to go their way.

Boland A also needs three points against Free State to progress to the playoffs.

Pool B is closer than many think, and it could come down to goal difference. Meanwhile, Southern Gauteng B is out of the running and will be playing to avoid relegation.

There is a common perception of ‘B’ teams when it comes to the SASHOC National Week. They’re not first-choice lineups and, thus, often regarded as stepping stones for A-teams to secure “easy wins” and three points.

That’s not the case at the SASHOC National Week, which is on the go at Maritzburg College, in Pietermaritzburg, and St Anne’s DSG, in Hilton.

On Tuesday, the Western Province u18B boys, competing in Pool B, stunned KZN Coastal A, usually a title-contending team, 2-1, courtesy of goals by Jacques van Dyk and Ryan Groenewald.

That win for coach Gary Stevens and his charges sent shockwaves through the Pool and opened up paths for other sides to potentially stake a claim to a semifinal place.

With Province B showing how to do it, other B-sides felt inspired, and, on Wednesday, Boland B produced another stunning result, defeating KZN Inland A 3-2 on Pape’s Astro.

The Boland B team entered the clash on the back of a 2-1 win over KZN Coastal B, while Inland A had suffered a tight 0-2 loss at the hands of Southern Gauteng A on Tuesday.

Inland was favoured, but Boland B seemed to have an answer for almost every question coach Damian Kimfley’s boys asked.

After a tight first chukka, the Western Cape side opened the scoring in the second quarter through Johen Pietersen.

Inland responded and drew level through a thunderbolt drag flick by skipper Dane Jackson. At the break, it was 1-1.

The second half belonged to Noah Hendricks. The Hoërskool Swartland pupil shone and stole the spotlight with a brace.

Jackson, once again, pulled one back for the home side, but it proved to be too little too late. Boland, to their credit, also played the final chukka without a goalkeeper after Joe van Coller left the field with an injury.

Inland, without a goalkeeper in sight, still couldn’t score, and the match ended in favour of the Western Cape outfit.

The action intensified after that clash, and KZN Coastal B, who were yet to register a win, came up against Eastern Province A.

EP suffered a hefty 1-8 loss to Western Province A on day two, so they were aiming to redeem themselves.

However, those plans were quickly thrown out the window as the Coastal side brought the heat while putting on a show for their supporters.

They scored quick, fiery goals in the first half through Bo Mokoena, Ethan Schilz, and Tye Milne.

EP was rocked. They need to respond, somehow. When Keegan Le Roux provided the answer from a short corner, they suddenly had hope.

Seth Groener, then, netted a field goal in the 41st minute to drag his team to within a goal, but that proved to be the final goal of the game as KZN Coastal B held on for a 3-2 win.

While the B-teams in Pool A made their mark at Maritzburg College, Western Province B was in action at St Anne’s DSG’s lower AstroTurf.

Pens, as they’re affectionately known, took on Southern Free State A and were brimming with confidence after beating KZN Coastal A the night before.

The boys from the Western Cape were clinical and solid defensively, but most importantly, they used their opportunities and punished Free State.

Captain Charlie Naylor opened the scoring for his side in the 26th minute, and four minutes later, Litha Mbiko netted a field goal to make it 2-0.

In the 36th minute, Cameron Groves fired home a PC to make it three, which sealed an impressive victory over the Grey College-laden outfit.

Boland B and KZN Coastal B were in action again later in the day, against Southern Gauteng A and Western Province A, respectively.

Boland, again, played without a keeper after Van Coller was ruled out. They fought hard against a star-studded Gauteng side but being without a netminder cost them dearly, and they succumbed to a 1-8 loss.

KZN Coastal B, meanwhile, went down 2-10 against the free-scoring Western Province A side.

While the two B-teams ended day three with losses, they will be proud of their efforts and how they showed up against the so-called “stronger teams”.

The Western Province (WP) and Southern Gauteng u18A teams maintained their unbeaten runs on Tuesday, the second day of the SASHOC National Week, at Maritzburg College, in Pietermaritzburg.

After a blistering opening day during which both sides registered ticks in the Pool A win column, maintaining their intensity and collecting three more points was the key item on their agendas on day two.

On Monday, WP weren’t at their best, but they still pulled off a 3-0 win over Boland B, while Southern Gauteng sneaked a 1-0 win over Eastern Province (EP).

Those victories left both sides with three points on the log overnight and they headed to the St Anne’s DSG lower AstroTurf, in Hilton, determined to bolster that points’ haul.

Province took on EP, who had suffered that loss to Southerns and also played to a goalless draw with KZN Inland A on Monday.

The boys from the Eastern Cape made a blistering start and opened the scoring in the sixth minute through their skipper, Athi Voigt.

That, however, woke up Province and they responded with goals in the ninth and 14th minutes through Ethan Daniels and Zachary Gibbon.

After the break, Province wrenched control of the contest from EP, and they were emphatic in their execution.

They allowed their opponents no leeway and played with vigour and flair to show why they’re one of the favourites to win the tournament.

Litha Kraai and Jo le Roux scored twice each before Mohlodi Maseko and Aidan Hughes completed the 8-1 drubbing in the final chukka.

While Western Province dominated Eastern Province, it was a tougher challenge for Southern Gauteng against KZN Inland A.

Inland A had played their double-header on day one, beating KZN Coastal B 2-0 before a goalless draw with Eastern Province in their second outing.

A win for either side on day two would position them well and open up a clear path to qualify for the semi-finals.

After starting their tournament with a 2-0 win and draw, on the opening day, the KZN Inland A side suffered a 2-0 loss to Southern Gauteng A on day two. Photo: TeamPhotoSA

Gauteng was up for the task and found the back of the net in the first half through Juan Martin.

Martin, who is a regular drag flicker at his school, Jeppe High School for Boys, wasn’t tasked with drag flicking responsibilities on day one but he was called upon against Inland. He didn’t disappoint.

Gauteng doubled their tally in the third chukka when Aidan Blatch scored a brilliant field goal to take the match away from their opponents.

It was a much better team performance from the Southerns boys than their somewhat tepid showing on day one, and they gelled well as a unit and bossed the midfield battle. They did, however, have to rely on goalkeeper Khotso Mabona to pull off some fine saves to keep a clean sheet.

Nevertheless, they held on for a 2-0 win and will face Western Province A in a key showdown on day three at 08:55 high in confidence.

In another Pool A clash, Boland B picked up their first win of the tournament when they defeated KZN Coastal B 2-1.

Ryan van der Merwe and Noah Hendricks were the goal scorers for Boland, while Murray Wicks replied for the Coastal outfit.

“Northerns are up, and they’re smelling the coffee” – Those were the words of a hockey enthusiast on Tuesday, day two of the u18 SASHOC National Week, which is being hosted at Maritzburg College, in Pietermaritzburg, and St Anne’s DSG, in Hilton.

That spectator, among others, woke up early for an early 07:30 push-back and was rewarded with an impressive 3-1 win for the Northern Gauteng u18A boys over last year’s runner-up, Boland u18A.

It was a crucial match for both sides as they sought to build on their victories on day one and get a solid grip on top spot in Pool B.

On Monday, Northerns were made to sweat for their 3-2 win over KZN Coastal A, while Boland ran riot against Western Province B, thumping them 5-0.

It was a different story, though, on day two. Coach Steven Paulo‘s charges, who were 0-2 down to KZN Coastal at halftime on Monday, came out guns blazing from the first whistle.

Instead of being conservative and waiting for Boland to fire, they took the game to their opponents and struck twice in the first half through co-captain Luken Brunette.

Brunette converted a short corner in the 17th minute before putting a penalty stroke past Jeandre Cilliers on the stroke of halftime.

In the third chukka, the Hoërskool Garsfontein skipper buried another penalty corner to take the game away from Boland.

With only five minutes left to play, Boland, at last, got onto the scoreboard through Seth Paterson, who slotted a penalty corner. It was, though, a disappointing result for the Western Cape outfit.

Speaking to SuperSport Schools Plus after the match, coach Paulo said he’s pleased with how his boys have conducted themselves, but they’re not resting on their laurels.

“We are extremely proud of the character the boys are showing,” he said.

“One of the reasons we are here is to make our province proud. Many people aren’t here, but they would’ve loved to be here to support our boys, so we remind ourselves of them.

“I think, so far, with the effort the boys have put in, it is amazing, and I think we are making them proud.”

Northerns’ 3-2 win over KZN Coastal A took plenty of character. Not only did they trail 0-2 at the break, but their goalkeeper Owen McMennamin also saved a penalty stroke, which, if scored, would have left them three goals down.

The second half, however, belonged to Northerns, and a penalty corner, earned just before the final hooter, delivered a fairytale finish when Brunette converted to secure a stirring come-from-behind victory.

Paulo believes the momentum his side built up in the second half of Monday’s win carried into the Boland fixture.

“After the Coastal game, Luken said he was so proud of the boys, and I shared the same sentiments.

“In that game, we just kept grinding until the last minutes. We managed to keep all our players on the field, and KZN Coastal got a couple of cards, which played to our advantage. The boys were relentless, but that was fantastic for us.”

Northerns have three big matches remaining in Pool B against Southern Gauteng B, Western Province B, and Southern Free State A.

Paulo said they’re not getting carried away and thinking too far ahead.

“Before we arrived here, we calculated every single permutation in the group, but we are not speaking about anything until the pool games are done,” he explained.

“If anything pops up besides our next opponent, we shut it down quickly. Although we’ve done well in two games, we haven’t achieved anything yet, and the boys are aware of that.”

    Other Pool B matches

After suffering a hefty loss against Boland, Western Province B rebounded with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Southern Gauteng B.

Daniel Graser scored a brace, while Cameron Cordeiro, Charlie Naylor, and Ryan Groenewald also got their names on the scoresheet.

Southern Free State A played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with KZN Coastal A.

Nkhahle Sematlane found the back of the net twice for the Free Staters, while Waldo Koning scored a scorcher for the Bloemfontein side.

For the Coastal side, Keegan de Jager converted two penalty corners, while Bonga Maphanga showed great skills to score a solo goal.

The last matches of the day resulted in Boland A beating Southern Gauteng B 1-0 and Western Province B stunning KZN Coastal A 2-1 to leave the group wide open.

There was an early Monday morning start as the fog was starting to clear over Pape’s Astro, at Maritzburg College, in Pietermaritzburg. The temperature read a mere four degrees Celsius as Eastern Province A and Southern Gauteng A got the ball rolling at the 2025 SASHOC National Week.

After months of preparation, it was time for the players to walk the talk and show spectators, national selectors, and, potentially, scouts in attendance, what they had to offer.

The big winners on the opening day were the defending champions Western Province A (WP), Southern Gauteng A, Boland A, Southern Free State A, and Northern Gauteng A.

Southern Gauteng defeated Eastern Province A (EP) 1-0 in the first game of the tournament, thanks to a strike by Parktown Boys’ High stalwart, Zeyad Davids.

The boys from Gauteng were made to sweat for their win. In a scrappy first half, EP came out fighting and created ample chances. However, coach Andrew Beynon‘s boys were their own worst enemies. Their finishing let them down.

In the first half, they were awarded several short corners, but their execution was rough, and those chances went begging.

Southerns, meanwhile, struggled to gel but showed promising signs, and their defence, steered by captain Ethan Kapanda, Khanyisa Kraai, and Benjamin Simon, was rock solid.

Up front, they didn’t create much, but Davids used the single chance that came his way, while Aidan Blatch showed glimpses of his potential.

The action intensified quickly when the defending champions, Western Province, took on Boland B.

Province defeated Boland A 3-2 in last year’s final and arrived in the Midlands as one of the favourites. Boland B, on the other hand, earned promotion after winning the B-Section in 2024.

WP hardly got out of first gear but, after a well-contested first chukka, went in front in the second chukka through Litha Kraai.

They doubled their tally soon after through a thunderbolt drag flick from captain Jo le Roux. Then, in the final chukka, Aiden Topper sealed the victory with a brilliant solo goal.

Another side that had a good opening day was KZN Inland A, who finished fifth in 2024, a placing with which they were disappointed.

Coach Damian Kimfley’s boys have flown under the radar ahead of the tournament, but they’re one of the sides to keep an eye on in a tough Pool A.

They enjoyed a good start, defeating a game KZN Coastal B side 2-0. Later in the day, they played out a goalless draw with Eastern Province A.

Inland created several good goal-scoring opportunities, but were frustrated by EP. It was a tightly contested affair, but EP’s Keegan Le Roux had a golden chance to win it in the dying minutes of the game when he picked up a loose ball and made a circle entry. His shot was wide of the mark, however, and it didn’t bother Viwe Ndlovu.

Inland also had a chance to snatch victory, but Kiano Broadhurst proved why he’s so highly rated, pulling off some acrobatic saves to keep the hosts goalless.

In Hilton, St Anne’s DSG’s lower AstroTurf hosted three boys’ matches, too, with Boland A taking on Western Province B, Northern Gauteng facing KZN Coastal A, and Southern Free State A tackling Southern Gauteng B.

Province B competed wholeheartedly, but Boland controlled the contest and finished well to run up an emphatic 5-0 victory, which set a nice foundation for the Western Cape side for the remainder of the tournament.

Ruben Gouws, Tylor Carter, Christo Swanepoel, and Adam Leitch, all of Paul Roos, netted, while Luka Meets completed the scoring, converting a stroke with a minute to play, to make it five.

The match of the day was undeniably between Northern Gauteng A and KZN Coastal A.

Led by coach Steven Paulo, the Northerns boys made a poor start, but coach Paulo’s speech halfway through the match sparked his boys back to life.

They trailed 0-2 at the break courtesy of strikes by Joshua Mungherera and Luke Allen, who both netted field goals in the second chukka. Owen McMennamin, though, kept his side from going a further goal behind by saving a penalty stroke.

Northerns had to respond, and they did so early in the second stanza when Tyler Trower pulled one. With seven minutes left to play, Luken Brunette levelled matters with a successful penalty stroke.

A 2-2 draw would have been befitting of the occasion, but Northerns had other ideas.

On the hooter, the boys from Pretoria were awarded a short corner. They turned to their co-captain, Luken Brunette.

He is no stranger to big match moments, and he did what he does best and converted, rocketing the ball past Georg Wolhuter, in the Coastal goal, to snatch a dramatic 3-2 win.

Southern Free State, meanwhile, mustered a 1-0 win over Southern Gauteng B, with by captain Matthias Visser slotting a penalty corner to secure the win for the boys from Bloemfontein, who dominated the contest, but found Southerns B tough to break down.
