The Standard Bank Hibbert Shield, to be hosted by Grey High School in Gqeberha, from Wednesday, 30 April, will feature some of the country’s best players in action.

The tournament, which concludes on Saturday, 3 May, features the strongest lineup of any schoolboy hockey event in South Africa.

It promises entertaining matchups and competitive action in the battle for the prestigious shield.

Paul Roos Gimnasiumis the defending champion, and they’ll be aiming for a fourth title and their third in succession. However, with the level of competition rising, it won’t be smooth sailing.

There will be an abundance of talent on display at the Rectory AstroTurf. We take a look at five senior players you should keep an eye on.

    Jo Le Roux – SACS

While many SuperSport Schools Hockey readers would’ve expected to see a different name under SACS, Jo Le Roux is the man we’ve chosen to highlight.

The SACS skipper has come into his own over the past two seasons and is playing some great hockey with the added responsibility of wearing the captain’s armband.

He’s made a good start to the season and led his troops to an unbeaten run on their international tour to The Netherlands last month.

Le Roux is also one of many versatile players in the SACS camp and can operate in different positions, from centre-back to midfield, and on the wing when needed.

He’s calm in defence, composed and encouraging when lifting his teammates, and a reliable threat at the top of the D, with his drag flicking.

Winning the Hibbert Shield requires teamwork, and Le Roux will need to be at his best and lead from the front to give his side a chance at glory.

Aidan Blatch – St Stithians College

Not much has been said about St Stithians College ahead of the Hibbert Shield, and the boys from Johannesburg will like that.

They’ll enter the tournament as underdogs, but they have some fantastic players who will be aiming to make their mark against top opposition.

One of those players is Aidan Blatch. The lanky, strong, and powerful forward is a force to be reckoned with and will cause problems for any team going up against Saints.

He starred for the hosts during the Saints Easter Hockey Festival and scored a hat-trick against Hilton College in their opener. They went on to complete an unbeaten run on home turf.

Blatch is a serial threat; he flicks well, has a powerful shot, and can turn the tide of a game in an instant. His ability to find spaces also makes him dangerous. Teams should be wary of this fellow.

    Uyanda Dlamini – Maritzburg College

Maritzburg College will be making its debut at the Hibbert Shield, and they’re one of those sides that could cause several upsets.

Under the leadership of Uyanda Dlamini, the boys from Pietermaritzburg have enjoyed a steady rise this season after a stuttering start to their campaign.

Credit for their early-season success must go to Dlamini, who is another key player to watch at the Rectory AstroTurf.

He is calm and unrelenting, and his desire to win translates into his leadership. He has silky hands and a change of speed to go with it, which makes him one of the most dangerous players in the country.

Based on their current form, College is a dark horse contender at Hibbert after impressing at the KES Easter Hockey Festival and, most recently, beating Pretoria Boys High 2-1 on the weekend. Dlamini will spearhead their challenge.

Kiano Broadhurst – Grey High School

In a tournament like the Hibbert Shield where anything can happen, goalkeepers have a crucial role to play. They’re usually busier than they are at most other times of the season.

That’s why Kiano Broadhurst features in this list because he will be crucial for the home side if they are to go all the way and win their first title on home turf since 2019.

The South African u17 goalkeeper featured for Grey in last year’s event in which his side went out in the semifinals against SACS after a penalty shootout. He would’ve taken lessons from that game and worked on his one-on-one saves.

In his last two outings for Grey, he conceded just one goal in a 5-1 win over Dale College while he kept a clean sheet against Pearson High School. Forwards, links, and wings are often game-changers, but coaches will state the obvious when they tell you that a good goalkeeper is a must-have. Backed up by sound defenders, Broadhurst won’t be beaten easily, that’s for sure.

Neilyandro van Schalkwyk – Grey College

Grey College has put together an impressive start to the season under the tutelage of head coach Dalan Phillips, who joined them this year from Pearson High School.

Phillips hasn’t changed much and has taken charge of a team that includes many players who featured in 2024, including Neilyandro van Schalkwyk.

Affectionately known as “Neli” by Grey’s parents, Van Schalkwyk is a key player in the new structure and the manner of play that Phillips has introduced to the boys from Bloemfontein.

He might not be one of the top goalscorers, but he makes his presence felt in midfield with strong carries, powerful runs, and big tackles. He shines and contributes to his team alongside other key performers, including Matthias Visser, captain Andrew Koupis, and Waldo Konig.

Grey heads into the tournament off the back of a 2-4 loss against Paarl Gimnasium, so they’ll be looking to bounce back quickly at the Hibbert Shield.

The last three finals of the annual  Standard Bank Hibbert Shield Hockey Tournament, hosted by Grey High School, in Gqeberha, were contested by Western Cape sides.

In 2022, South African College High School (SACS) defeated Bishops [Diocesan College] 3-1 in the final to lift the title.

A year later, SACS was dethroned by Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG), and the boys from Stellenbosch returned in 2024 to claim back-to-back titles after beating SACS again.

Frankly, it’s been the Western Cape show at Hibbert, and the only team outside the province that’s won it is Grey High School, back in 2021.

This year’s tournament takes place from Wednesday, 30 April, to Saturday, 3 May. Included in the lineup are five strong Western Cape teams: SACS, PRG, Bishops, Paarl Gimnasium, and debutants, Parel Vallei High School.

SuperSport Schools Plus hockey writer Avuyile Sawula takes a deep dive into each team’s current form, what to expect from them, and key talking points.

    Paul Roos Gimnasium

It’s only fair to begin with PRG, the reigning champions of the Hibbert Shield and three-time winners of the tournament.

Coach Michael Baker’s boys, whether they like it or not, are considered one of the favourites to win the title. They’ve had a good start to the season and are unbeaten, despite having been forced to grind out some victories and sometimes win ugly.

It’s a young PRG side that coach Baker has at his disposal, but they’re showing character, fight, and a desire to win against all odds.

The last time they were in action, they scored a 3-2 win over Bishops, in Cape Town. Believe it or not, that was Baker’s first win in the city since joining PRG at the beginning of 2024.

They have some quality players in their arsenal, including skipper Christo Swanepoel and vice-captain Seth Paterson. Reuben Gouws and Caleb Cilliers scored against Bishops, and if they’re given any space, they’ll punish the opposition.

It should also be an interesting tournament for goalkeeper Josh Boden, who will be called upon to make crucial saves more often than usual when needed.

They might be a young team, but PRG will bring the heat to Gqeberha. They’ve been drawn in Pool B and will face Clifton College, Maritzburg College, and Selborne College.

    SACS

The start of the 2025 schoolboy hockey season in the Western Cape has been strange, in the sense that we’ve barely seen SACS in action. They were on an international tour to The Netherlands while other teams were in local action.

Last Friday, SACS played their first match on South African soil against Parel Vallei and won that game 4-1, away from home. Reece Theunis scored a brace while skipper Jo Le Roux also found the back of the net, along with Cameron Cordeiro.

SACS played far from their best game, but they managed to win, which is something that’s in their DNA. They conceded first, but the comeback was strong, and they used their opportunities at the other end of the park.

Coach Sam Holmes’s side also has a new face in the team, Daniel de Wet, who joined the school this year from Namibia’s Private School Swakopmund.

The boys in blue and white will also be boosted by the return of Litha Kraai and Matthew Lassen, who missed Saturday’s match while participating in the Junior Africa Cup in Windhoek.

Their Pool A opponents – St Alban’s College, Pearson High, and Grey College – know they face a huge challenge from the Cape Town powerhouse.

    Paarl Gimnasium

Paarl Gimnasium has put together some outstanding seasons in recent years, and it feels as if this could be another of them.

Coached by the experienced Jacques Grobler, the boys from Paarl have enjoyed a steady start to the 2025 campaign and they’re coming into their own as it progresses.

Festival hockey isn’t always an indicator of a team’s direction, and that was evident at the Founders Hockey Festival, where they recorded a mixed bag of results.

It’s in their derby clashes, however, where they’ve come alive. In the past three weeks, they’ve handed Affies a 4-1 defeat and beat Grey College 4-2 in Bloemfontein in their most recent outing.

Gim is a side that often flies under the radar; they don’t do too much talking, but they always turn up when a challenge awaits.

They were considered the underdogs against Grey College because Grey produced a “promising” Nomads Hockey Festival showing in March. Again, though, coach Grobler’s side rose to the occasion and did all their talking on the AstroTurf.

What I’m getting at is that this Paarl Gim side shouldn’t be underestimated. They may not have the presence of a big star, like Litha Kraai, but their trust and belief in one another means they will come out firing as a unit.

Gim is in Pool C and will face Grey High, Westville Boys’ High, and St Stithians College.

Parel Vallei will look to make their mark at the Hibbert Shield. Photo: Parel Vallei High School

    Parel Vallei High School

The term “surprise package” is often bandied about, and in 2025, Parel Vallei could be given that title, although, given the quality in their ranks, their success is hardly a surprise.

The boys from Somerset West will make their debut at the Hibbert Shield this year, and much is expected from them after a strong start to the season.

Led by coach Michael van Rensburg, Parel Vallei is becoming a force to be reckoned with. Underestimate them at your peril!

Their last outing might have resulted in a 1-4 loss to SACS, but there were many positives to take away from that game, including how they pressed and restricted SACS from scoring field goals. They also posed a threat when on the counterattack.

The one element of their game coach Van Rensburg will want to work on is the ability of his charges to bounce back and remain in the fight after conceding early or surrendering a lead.

Parel Vallei is blessed with some very talented players, including skipper JP van der Walt, Luka Meets, Stephan Malan, and Luca Jordan, who played his 50th game for the school last Friday.

Their debut tournament will see them face Bishops, Hoërskool Garsfontein, and Durban High School (DHS) in Pool D.

The Bishops’ 1st XI has been ascending as the season has progressed. They could be a dangerous opponent at the Hibbert Shield. Photo: St Alban’s College.

    Bishops [Diocesan College]

While the other Western Cape sides head to Hibbert in good form, Bishops will be aiming to make a big statement in Gqeberha.

The southern suburbs’ team is slowly but surely finding its feet after a bumpy pre-season.

They recorded some positive results at the Independent Schools Hockey Festival in Johannesburg, earlier this month, and topped that up with a win over Durbanville in the Western Cape league.

A 2-3 loss against a high-quality opponent, Paul Roos, last weekend will hurt, but that result will also serve as encouragement to Bishops that they are there or thereabouts.

Coach Ryan Julius was disappointed last year when they went down in the quarterfinals against Garsfontein. They will again face the Pretoria school this year in a pool match. No doubt, they would like to avenge that costly defeat.

Bishops has a young team and one feels it’s only a matter of time before they find their rhythm, start clicking, and firing on all cylinders.

Their Pool D opponents are Parel Vallei, Garsfontein, and Durban High School.

The schoolboy hockey season has been in full swing for at least two months now, but the action will ramp up this week at the Standard Bank Hibbert Shield Hockey Tournament, which takes place at Grey High School, in Gqeberha.

The prestigious event pits many of the country’s top sides against each other.

It runs from Wednesday, 30 April, to Saturday, 3 May.

The Hibbert Shield will be LIVE on the SuperSport Schools App and DSTV Channel 216.

Sixteen teams from across South Africa will be welcomed to The Windy City. Included in the star-studded lineup are the defending champions, Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG), who are drawn in Pool B. They edged out their Western Cape rivals, South African College High School (SACS), in last year’s final.

Both PRG and SACS will be back for another crack at the silverware. SACS lifted the shield in 2022, while PRG has claimed the title for the past two years.

The boys from Stellenbosch have started the season like a house on fire and defeated Bishops 3-2 in their last outing. SACS, meanwhile, recorded a 4-1 win over Parel Vallei on the weekend.

Coached by Sam Holmes, SACS will be out to make their mark in Pool A, but they will need to go through St Alban’s College, Pearson High, and Grey College to make the quarterfinals.

PRG takes on the KwaZulu-Natal duo of Clifton College and Maritzburg College, as well as Selborne College, in Pool B.

Maritzburg College has built up considerable momentum as the season has progressed and they’re into their stride. They impressed at the King Edward VII Easter Hockey Festival, winning all of their games.

Their winning streak continued on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Pretoria Boys High in the South African capital city.

The hosts, Grey High, are in Pool C and face Paarl Gimnasium, Westville Boys’ High, and St Stithians College. It’s a tough group. While Westville has endured some struggles this season, coach Cam Mackay’s sides always improve as the season progresses.

Paarl Gim, with an impressive 4-2 win over Grey College in Bloemfontein, showed they’re ready to challenge, while St Stithians shone at the Saints Easter Festival, where they went five for five.

At issue is the fact that only two of the four teams will make it through to the quarterfinals.

Grey has enjoyed smooth preparation for the event, scoring two wins in the past week – 4-0 over Pearson and 5-1 over Dale College on the weekend.

Westville’s most recent outing was against one of the season’s top teams, Jeppe High School for Boys. The Griffin raced into a 2-0 lead, but Jeppe rode out the early setbacks and claimed a 5-2 win.

Pool D is wide open. with no clear favourite. Durban High School, Bishops, Parel Vallei, and Hoërskool Garsfontein will battle it out for the two quarterfinal places.

Bishops will be on the hunt for revenge after they missed out on a semifinal spot last year when they went down to Garsies in the last eight.

DHS is in good form, and a 2-1 win over Northwood over the weekend will boost their confidence, while Parel Vallei has enjoyed a strong season thus far. They will be eager to make a massive mark in their debut outing.

Reid Drake scored a hat-trick of goals to help Selborne College secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Queen’s College, in Komani, on Friday night.

The Eastern Cape derby was played on Queen’s College’s 167th Reunion Weekend, and the occasion saw the Chris Harker AstroTurf filled to the rafters.

Both sides headed into the clash on the back of mixed results at the King Edward VII Easter Hockey Festival, in Johannesburg, last week.

Selborne’s last outing ended in a 3-4 loss against Glenwood High School, while Queen’s suffered a hefty 0-5 defeat at the hands of the high-flying Jeppe High School for Boys.

The teams were evenly matched in the early going on Friday night as both sides struggled to find their rhythm.

The hosts, though, opened the scoring late in the first quarter after a PC drag flick by their dangerman Brett Hoffman.

Selborne wasn’t about to back down, though, and they came out firing after the break. After generating persistent pressure, they were awarded a penalty corner. Drake, who has been superb from the top of the D this season, converted to make it 1-1.

A few minutes later, he had two goals to his name, and before halftime, Drake had completed his hat-trick, with each of his goals coming from penalty corner drag flicks.

The game looked done and dusted, but Queen’s pulled one back through Aiden van Jaarsveld in the second half.

They made a late push for an equaliser, but Selborne remained resolute and secured a much-needed win away from home.

Grey High School, meanwhile, continued their impressive start to the season with a 5-1 victory over Dale College, in Gqeberha.

Earlier, in a mid-week game, Grey had handed Pearson High a 4-0 defeat, so they were brimming with confidence and had their tails up.

It was business as usual for coach Andrew Beynon’s side when the usual suspects – Dante Elkington, Athi Voigt, James Chree, Logan Goddard-Ford, and skipper Luke Tait  – found the back of the net.

While there was joy for Grey at home, Pearson High suffered a second big blow, going down 1-4 to Hoërskool Outeniqua.

Cambridge High School welcomed Graeme College to East London and grabbed a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from  Lihle Hempe and Anganathi Nyongo.

Next week, Selborne, Grey, and Pearson will be in action in the upcoming Hibbert Shield. Hosted by Grey, it runs from Wednesday, 30 April, to Friday, 2 May, and features many of the country’s leading teams.

Aggressive, dominant, and ruthless are three words that can be used to describe the South Africa Men’s u21 side after they thumped Namibia 5-0 in the final of the Junior Africa Cup, in Windhoek, on Friday night.

South Africa breezed through the pool stages and maintained their unbeaten run by coming out on top in the final, too.

They were clinical from the outset, accurate in front of goal, and barely conceded, not that they had to do a lot of defending.

Under the guidance of head coach Guy Elliott, the SA boys kicked off their campaign with lopsided victories against Zambia (12-3) and Namibia (8-0).

Those were followed by a 7-1 thumping of Zimbabwe, which secured South Africa a place at the FIH Junior Men’s World Cup, which takes place in Chennai and Madurai, India, later this year.

Not even South Africa’s traditional African rivals, Egypt, could slow down Elliott’s charges, with SA cruising to a 5-0 win. It was a different story against Kenya, with South Africa scoring only a 2-1 victory. By then, they had already secured a place in the final against the hosts.

With the title on the line, it was one-way traffic at the Davin Trustco Hockey Stadium as South Africa ran rampant against the hosts.

They dominated the opening chukka and opened the scoring after some slick interplay between Carlon Mentoor and Reuben Sendzul, with the former Paul Roos Gimnasium captain converting to make it 1-0.

With two minutes remaining in the chukka, former Jeppe High School for Boys stalwart Jaydon Brooker converted from the top of the D to make it 2-0.

The South Africans continued to pile on the pressure in the third chukka, making a whopping nine circle entries.

Out of those, they converted only one, but it was that man, Brooker, again, who scored a thunderbolt of a drag flick to make it 3-0 at the halfway point.

The message at halftime was simple from coach Elliot and his staff, and that was to continue outworking and outsmarting their opponents.

That’s exactly what they did, controlling the tempo of the game, and they were rewarded with a successful PC flick from former Clifton College captain Ross Montgomery, who finally got onto the scoresheet after numerous attempts.

The boys in green and gold completed the drubbing in the final chukka.

Wynberg Boys’ High product Viwe Mbatha created space in the circle, where he received the ball and tapped in for a simple finish, which made the final score 5-0.

South Africa completed the tournament having scored an impressive 41 goals while conceding only five.

Dan Dillion was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while Brooker was both the Top Goal Scorer and Player of the Tournament.

Paarl Gimnasium boys’ head coach Jacques Grobler has urged his charges to stay humble and grounded after their impressive 4-2 win over Grey College in Bloemfontein on Friday night.

The boys from the Western Cape made the trip to Bloem, eyeing a confidence-boosting victory against Grey just a couple of days before the Hibbert Shield kicks off in Gqeberha, at Grey High School.

It was a clinical performance by coach Grobler’s troops, who dominated ball possession for the majority of the match, used their opportunities, and clamped down on the hosts when it mattered.

They scored early in the first half through Philip du Preez, who positioned himself in the right place to tap in after the ball was slapped inside the circle.

Grey responded through the dangerous Matthias Visser. However, the visitors took the lead once more through skipper Juan Swanepoel, who converted a penalty stroke.

Swanepoel wasn’t done and added a field goal before Visser pulled one back for Grey, courtesy of another penalty stroke.

Gim closed out the game in the final chukka with a super-charged drag flick from Stefan Wiehahn, which sealed the win.

“It was a fantastic game. I’m proud of the boys for the character they showed,” Grobler told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“They showed great character in tough circumstances, and I truly believe this team can be one of the great Gim teams if they can stay humble and keep growing and developing as a group.”

Among the positives Paarl Gim will take out of the game is the manner in which they bossed the midfield, and how well their midfielders linked well with their wings and forwards.

Grobler credited his players for executing well: “I believe we strangled their midfield, and we had excellent movement off the ball to create space from our midfield and forwards.

“If we were slightly more clinical, the game could have been slightly more in our favour earlier on.”

Paarl Gim will celebrate the massive win for a couple of hours before shifting their attention to the Hibbert Shield, which kicks off on 30 April, in Gqeberha, at Grey High School.

They have been drawn in Pool C and will face St Stithians Boys’ College, Westville Boys’ High, and the hosts. It’s a challenging pool.

“This is a fantastic confidence booster going into Hibbert, as we have a tough pool and will need to be at our best to make the quarterfinals,” Grobler reckoned.

“With that said, we always thoroughly enjoy that tournament, and no matter what, we will give it our best and enjoy the competitive environment.”

Paarl Gim opens their Hibbert Shield campaign with a matchup against Grey High at 10:15 on the opening day.

Getting their mojo back and placing a tick in the win column will be on the agenda for Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof when they face Parel Vallei High School in a Hyundai Friday Nite Lights match, in Cape Town, on Friday.

The much-anticipated clash will serve as good preparation for the sides ahead of next week’s All Girls Festival and Girls Challenge.

They enter Friday night’s showdown in contrasting form, with Bloemhof looking to bounce back from a defeat last time out, while PV will be eager to ride a wave of good momentum.

In their last outing, coach Jenny King‘s Bloemhof side suffered a close 1-2 loss against Collegiate Girls’ High, from Gqeberha, while PV scored a dominant 5-1 victory over DF Malan.

Bloemhof faced Herschel Girls School the night before playing Collegiate and defeated the Cape Town school 2-1.

The Stellenbosch girls enjoyed a break over the Easter long weekend, but coach King said they’ve hit the ground running as they prepare for PV’s challenge.

“Rest is always good, but we stepped up our training this week, especially with our eye on the All Girls Festival next week,” she told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“We have to be at our best. PV is never easy, especially away. They have had a good start to their season, so we will have to raise our game.”

Bloemhof is regarded as one of the top teams in the country after their outstanding performance at the St Mary’s Waverley Festival last month. They almost went all the way to the title, coming up just short in the final when they went down 0-1 to St Mary’s DSG, Kloof.

With PV waiting, and then the All Girls Festival, coach King wants her side firing on all cylinders, She revealed what fans can expect from her team: “The key is to get back to the form we were in at St Mary’s,” she said.

“We want to showcase early pressing, tempo hockey, staying disciplined in defence, and having tough attacking plays in the opposition’s defensive area.”

The match kicks off at 18:00 and will be LIVE on SuperSport Schools.

It has been a tough start to the 2025 hockey season for two of the Border region’s traditional hockey powers, Queen’s College and Selborne College.

They both have relatively young squads this year, and they’ve found the going challenging when participating in festivals.

Those events have, however, allowed them to build up chemistry and, for the younger players, given them an opportunity to adjust to the demands of 1st XI hockey. Now, they’ll shift their focus to their derby showdown at the Chris Harker AstroTurf, on Friday, in Komani, when Queen’s celebrates its 167th Reunion.

Meetings between the schools in recent years have thrilled, entertained, and kept spectators on the edge of their seats. But it has been the boys from East London who have held the upper hand.

In 2024, when Selborne enjoyed a superb season, they met twice. In the first match, in East London, the teams shared a 1-1 draw, which was a shock to the system for Selborne. When they met later in the season, they thumped Queen’s 6-1.

Based on their current form, there’s little to separate the sides. Both were in action at the King Edward VII Easter Hockey Festival last weekend and returned a mixed bag of results.

Queen’s left the happier. Out of the five matches played, coach Michael Baiden’s side mustered two wins, beating St Charles College 3-2 and Hoërskool Waterkloof 2-1. They went down to Maritzburg College, KES, and Jeppe High School for Boys, three teams that are enjoying very good seasons thus far.

Selborne, meanwhile, had a tough time in Johannesburg, and they’ll be eager to bounce back and pick up some momentum before the Hibbert Shield.

They faced a tough lineup of teams and finished with 2-2 draws against Kearsney College and Parktown Boys High, but were beaten in their other three matches.

In past seasons it was almost guaranteed that Selborne was going to run away with it, but this year’s clash is wide open and up for grabs.

Selborne is focused on bouncing back against Queen’s after a challenging time at the KES Festival. Photo: Selborne College on Facebook.

It will be a battle of tactics and skill, but, as always, the team that capitalises on its opportunities will win.

Selborne has a powerhouse in skipper Gray van Heerden, along with an experienced campaigner in Thomas Caswell.

Youngsters, Saneze Kweba and Inathi Gxobole, have found the back of the net consistently in recent weeks, and they’ll look to bring their A-game to the clash.

Reid Drake has been a dangerman for coach KJ Friend’s side at the top of the circle, and he’ll be keen to damage the Queen’s challenge

As for the hosts, their encouraging performances at KES will be cause for optimism.

They have some valuable experience in their ranks, including Aiden van Jaarsveld, provincial goalkeeper Rowan Miles, Yibonge Mquqwana, and Mafu Mandaba.

The man to keep an eye on, though, will be Brett Hoffmann, who proved to be a handful at PC time at KES.

The clash takes place under lights and starts at 19:45. It will be LIVE on SuperSport Schools.

While the reunion in Komani takes centre stage, there are other clashes to look forward to around the Eastern Cape.

Grey High, after their astonishing 4-4 draw with Paul Roos Gimnasium earlier this month, will host Dale College at the Rectory AstroTurf, in Gqeberha.

Pearson High welcomes Hoërskool Outeniqua in an exchange derby, while Cambridge High School faces Graeme College.

The annual Hibbert Shield Hockey Tournament, sponsored by Standard Bank, is considered to be the pinnacle of schoolboy hockey in South Africa.

The 2025 event, which is hosted by Grey High School, in Gqeberha, runs from Wednesday, 30 April, to Saturday, 3 May.

Many of the country’s leading teams will be in attendance, knowing that success at the Hibbert Shield will include them in the conversation about the best sides in the country.

All the action will be LIVE on the SuperSport Schools App and DSTV Channel 216.

For results and match reports, follow SuperSport Schools Plus Hockey.

With only a week to go before the tournament, SuperSport Schools Plus hockey writer Avuyile Sawula looks at everything you need to know about the event, taking a deep dive into the history of the tournament, the fixtures, venues, teams in action, and past winners.

    HISTORY

The Hibbert Shield was established by Grey High School to give some of the country’s top teams an opportunity for game time and competitive play.

Named after the Hibbert family, it began in 2019 with just six teams: Michaelhouse, Selborne College, Grey High, Paul Roos Gimnasium, Bishops [Diocesan College] and Hoërskool Garsfontein.

The inaugural tournament was won by Paul Roos, who defeated Bishops 4-2 in the final.

Play was halted the following year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the tournament resumed in 2021.

The return of the event also came with a change to the lineup, with Pearson High School, Paul Roos, St Stithians College, Grey College, South African College High School (SACS), and Grey High competing for the title.

That year, Grey High claimed the title. Since then, in double-quick time, the tournament’s status has grown massively, with leading hockey-playing schools signing up to take part, and it has gone from strength to strength.

    TEAMS IN ACTION

In 2024, only 12 teams were in action at the Hibbert Shield, but that number has increased to 16 sides for 2025. For hockey fans, it’s a must-watch. The event is stacked with teams that have already established themselves as among the best in the country this season.

The host province, the Eastern Cape, will be represented by Grey High, Pearson High, and East London’s Selborne College.

The Western Cape provides a strong list of challengers, including the defending champions, Paul Roos, who will be challenged by SACS, Paarl Gimnasium, Bishops, and newcomers, Parel Vallei High School.

KwaZulu-Natal will be represented by Westville Boys’ High, Clifton College, Maritzburg College, and Durban High School.

Gauteng, meanwhile, has three teams in action. Hoërskool Garsfontein, which falls under the Noordvaal region, made the semi-finals in 2024, and they return, along with St Stithians College and St Alban’s College, who will also be making their debut.

Grey College is the sole Free State representative.

    NEW STRUCTURE

Unlike in previous years, where the teams that didn’t qualify for the playoffs were out of the running, this year’s edition will see the introduction of a bowl section.

This means the top eight teams will progress to the quarterfinals and battle it out for the Hibbert Shield while the bottom eight will pursue the Bowl.

    VENUES FOR THE 2025 TOURNAMENT

Due to the tournament’s expansion from 12 to 16 teams, the Rectory AstroTurf, at Grey High, won’t be able to accommodate every match.

Other pool matches and knockout games will be played at the nearby Collegiate Girls’ High School AstroTurf.

Bishops will aim to claim the big scalp of Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) when the sides meet in a Western Cape derby at the Woodlands AstroTurf, in Cape Town, on Friday night.

Recently, coach Ryan Julius‘s Bishops’ boys participated in the Independent Schools Hockey Festival that was hosted by St Alban’s College in March.

There, they played five matches and walked away with two victories, two draws, and a 1-2 loss against the hosts.

They next shifted their attention to their opening league fixture against Durbanville. Playing at home, Bishops won 3-2, courtesy of goals by Troy Stockdale, James Robb-Quinlan, and Adam Diggle.

Despite that success, coach Julius, his assistants, and players are fully aware that PRG is a different kind of beast.

Led by coach Michael Baker and captained by Christo Swanepoel, PRG looks deadly on attack, composed in the middle, but is still working to find greater consistency at the back.

They’re an exciting side and their thrilling 4-4 draw with Grey High School, which was stacked with superb skills from both teams, is already a strong candidate for the match of the season.

Scoring goals early on in the season hasn’t been an issue, but they’ve also conceded some silly goals, and Bishops will want to capitalise on that.

In their last outing, just before the Easter long weekend, though, PRG kept a clean sheet and beat Somerset College 5-0.

Both coaches have fairly young squads, and there are no guaranteed results, but Bishops will feel they have a shot at getting one over the Stellenbosch outfit.

While those sides battle it out in the southern suburbs, South African College High School (SACS) will visit Parel Vallei High School for a Hyundai Friday Nite Lights clash.

It will be SACS’s first official outing on South African shores in 2025 after their tour to The Netherlands last month.

While away, SACS took on some Dutch powerhouses and proved why they are, once again, regarded as one of the top teams in the country.

They racked up wins against Athena Hockey Club (4-1), Pinoke (5-4), THC Hurley (9-2), and MHC Alliance (4-2), and drew 4-4 with Amsterdamsche Hockey & Bandy Club.

Coach Sam Holmes will have a fully fit squad to choose from except for Litha Kraai and Matthew Lassen, who are both on national duty with the South African and Namibian u21 men’s sides at the Junior African Cup of Nations, in Namibia.

They come up against a fiery Parel Vallei side that’s on a mission to upset the status quo this season.

Their last outing resulted in a 5-1 victory over DF Malan in Luka Meets’ 50th appearance for the side.

The clash, at Parel Vallei, starts at 19:45.

In other matches on the weekend, Rondebosch Boys High welcomes Paarl Boys High for a Friday night clash, and Hoërskool Punt visits Worcester Gimnasium.

Paarl Gimnasium journeys to Bloemfontein for a titanic clash against Grey College.
