  • DAY 3| Boys| Grobler applauds Gim’s mental strength as they reach Belgotex final

Paarl Gimnasium head coach Jacques Grobler applauded the mental strength and grit shown by his side as it reached the Cup final of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament in the southern suburbs of Cape Town on Friday.

The defending champions booked their main game after a rollicking 9-1 thrashing of Namibia’s Private School Swakopmund.

They will take on Worcester Gymnasium for the title after they edged out Stellenberg 4-3 from the penalty spot, with the teams having ended regulation time level at 1-1.

Before their semi-final clash, Gim was certainly the most impressive side in the boys’ section, dominating throughout the pool stages as they took top spot in Pool C after their four matches.

Their first stern challenge of the weekend came on Friday morning when they tackled Somerset College in the quarterfinals.

Gim struggled to break the deadlock against a well-organised team and trailed 0-1 going into the final chukka.

They were kept in the fight by a late John Coetzee goal, which tied the scores at 1-1 and led to penalties. Coach Grobler’s side, despite missing their first, clinched the shootout 3-1, to progress to the final four.

There, they met another side that had been impressive throughout the weekend, fellow pool winners, Private School Swakopmund. That mattered little to Paarl Gimnasium though.

They opened the scoring in the first chukka through Juan Swanepoel and skipper LD Nel added another. James De Jager, then, pulled one back for Private School early in the second chukka, but it was quickly cancelled out by another goal from Swanepoel, before Stefan Wiehahn scored to make it 4-1 at the halfway mark.

The third chukka delivered only one goal with Paarl Gim’s skipper, Nel, getting a well-deserved double and extending his side’s advantage to 5-1.

Grobler’s charges raised the tempo in the fourth and final chukka, scoring a whopping four goals while not conceding.

Nel completed a hattrick, John Coetzee struck for a second time, and Neil De Wet also got his name on the score sheet to complete a 9-1 drubbing.

Commenting on his team’s performances throughout the tournament, and addressing how they would approach the final, coach Grobler told SuperSport Schools: “We were successful in the pool stages. We got the results we were looking for, but it wasn’t always the flow, the connection, and creativity we wanted.

“This morning, we had a very tough quarterfinal that we luckily sneaked through at the end, but it was a game we needed to reset mentally.

“The semi-final was what we were looking for. It was more convincing from the boys, and they played with more freedom.

“We won’t overcomplicate the final. We know what we’re good at. We will try and play to what we know, and to our strengths,” he concluded.

The second semi-final was a battle between the Cape sides, Stellenberg and Worcester Gymnasium.

The match was decided on penalties after it had ended tied at 1-1, courtesy of goals by Joshua Coetzee, for Worcester Gymnasium, and Christian Spence, for Stellenberg.

Stellies will battle Private School Swakopmund in the third-place playoff, with Worcester advancing to the title-deciding match.

All the action will be LIVE on SuperSport Schools.

  • DAY 3| Girls| Middelburg defy the odds to reach Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament final

Photo: Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament

Hoërskool Middelburg made history on day three of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Festival by booking themselves a place in the Cup final after defeating Rustenburg Girls’ High School 3-0 in the semi-finals on Friday afternoon.

The Mpumalanga school faces Somerset College in the title-decider, at 17:20 on the Hartleyvale A Astroturf, on Saturday.

Entering the tournament, Middies were considered one of the dark horse teams.

They were unphased by others’ perceptions, however, and immediately ripped off two wins on the opening day, swamping Private School Swakopmund 10-1 before defeating Hudson Park 3-1.

On day two, they destroyed Curro Durbanville (6-0) and Hugenote (8-0) to emphatically clinch first place in the group. That secured coach Alti Nel’s team a quarterfinals’ showdown with Woodridge College.

That clash, on Friday morning, proved to be a tough test for the Mpumalanga side. They were held to a goalless draw but advanced to the final four after winning a penalty shootout 3-1.

After that narrow escape, Middies quickly turned their attention to a stern semi-final test against Rustenburg, who had taken out Paarl Gimnasium in the quarterfinals.

In the first two chukkas, it was very tight, with neither team creating many chances. The sides turned deadlocked at 0-0, but Middies changed that in the third chukka.

Imke Grobbelaar and Lumé Smit stepped up when it mattered the most, netting, to open up a 2-0 lead as the contest headed into its last quarter.

Smit was not done and grabbed a second goal in the fourth chukka to seal an impressive 3-0 win for her side.

Reacting to the match, coach Nel expressed how thrilled she was for her team, and how much reaching the final means to the Mpumalanga outfit.

“We’ve been enjoying the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Festival. It’s been a great opportunity for our girls,” she told SuperSport Schools.

“The quarterfinal and semi-final were tough matches, but the girls showed they can do it.

“This means a lot to us, and to end up in the best two is kind of crazy. We are very happy and, as parents and a coaching group, proud of the girls,” she added.

In the second semi-final of the day, Monument’s hopes of defending the title they won in 2023 were dashed by Somerset College.

Somerset snatched a 2-1 win, with Annabelle Hamel netting the winner with less than a minute left after Leila Holtzhausen had opened the scoring for the Western Cape side.

The final day’s action kicks off bright and early when Hermanus faces Belville High in the Super Bowl final. The Shield final, meanwhile, will be an Eastern Cape derby between Kingswood College and Stirling High.

The final, at 17:20, and all of the final day’s action will be live on SuperSportSchools.

Paarl Gimnasium, Monument, and Woodridge College still have a chance of going all the way in the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Festival after making it through to the Cup quarterfinals of the tournament in Cape Town on Thursday.

Those three sides finished top of their respective pools after picking up two impressive victories each on day two.

Last year’s winners, Monument, will take on an in-form Stellenberg side in their last eight fixture. Paarl Gim will face Rustenburg Girls’, and Woodridge takes on Middelburg.

Meanwhile, the remaining fixture will be contested by Outeniqua and Somerset College.

After recording a win and a draw in the first two matches of their title defence, against Belville High and Kingswood College, Monument entered day two knowing they had to win at all costs.

Coach Robin Franklin’s side kick-started their day in the best way possible, dominating proceedings to overpower Stellenbosch High 6-0. Keila Meyer, Danike Redpath, Lanali van der Merwe, Shawna Botha, and Hannah Smyth, with a brace, sealed the win for the Krugersdorp side.

Later in the day, they defeated another Western Cape side, outscoring Wynberg Girls’ 3-1. Smyth struck twice again, while Marseille Nel also got her name on the score sheet.

Woodridge were accurate in front of the goal and that accuracy landed the Eastern Cape side a quarterfinal spot.

They scored a total of eight goals on Thursday – four against both DF Malan and Pro-Ed Akademie.

Against DF, it was Anna Kirsten, Jemma Maartens, Georgia Kilfoil, and Daniella Smith on the score sheet. Then, it was the turn of Reece Foreman, Emilee Tinderholm, and Dane Strydom, who grabbed a pair, against Pro-Ed.

The Paarl Gimnasium girls, just like their male counterparts, have appeared to be a cut above the rest during the festival, and Thursday was no different.

They never got out of first gear but still beat Hoërskool Rustenburg 1-0. They followed that up with a 3-0 victory over Windhoek Gymnasium to finish atop Pool D.

Among the fixtures on the third day of the festival will be Hudson Park against DF Malan in one of the Plate quarterfinals.

Stirling High will contest the Shield quarterfinals, where they will take on Hoërskool Rustenburg. After missing out on the top spot in their pool, Fairmont meets Durbanville in the other Plate quarterfinal, while Kingswood and York are set to meet in the Shield category.

The Cup quarterfinals will be played at Hartleyvale A and B astro turfs and start as early as 11:30.

All the action will be LIVE on SuperSport Schools.

Eight teams remain in the hunt to be crowned the champions after securing their places in the Cup quarterfinals of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Festival in the southern suburbs of Cape Town on Thursday.

After a blistering start to the tournament, which saw over 100 goals scored in the boys’ section on Wednesday, the action intensified on day two, and rightfully so, with playoff spots on the line.

The teams that finished first in their respective pools will play for the Cup. Those teams that finished in second place in their pools will battle it out for the Plate, while third place teams will move on to the Shield, with the fourth and fifth placed sides contesting the Bowl.

On Wednesday, the opening day, Somerset College, Paarl Gimnasium, Worcester Gymnasium and Fairmont High were among the standout teams, and they continued their dominance on Thursday.

They all booked their places in the last eight and were joined by Private School Swakopmund, Outeniqua, Stellenberg, and York High.

Somerset, led by Coach Mick Ouwerkerk, will face their toughest challenge yet when they play Paarl Gim in the quarterfinals.

They cemented the top spot in Pool D by beating Makhanda’s Kingswood College, and Windhoek Gymnasium.

Against Kingswood, they claimed a 2-1 win, with the goals coming from the sticks of Michael Du Toit and Connor Hendriks.

In their second encounter, they netted four times against Windhoek Gymnasium. Du Toit was back on the score sheet with a brace, while Luke Limbert and Matthew Sutherland also struck.

Last year’s champions, Paarl Gim, stayed unbeaten as their quest to defend their title remained on track.

They delivered spirited performances against Hoërskool Punt (4-1) and St George’s Diocesan School (5-0) to comfortably take the honours in Pool C.

Just as they had done on Wednesday, both Stefan Wiehahn and Neil De Wet netted for the Stellenbosch outfit, with Wiehahn getting on the board against St George’s and De Wet scoring against Punt.

There was joy for Stellenberg High School, which also ended the pool stages undefeated. Coach Kyle Esau’s side scored a whopping 11 goals in their two matches on day two.

After a 1-0 win over Paarl Boys’ High on Wednesday, they began day two with a 5-0 drubbing of Redhill, and then thumped Hoërskool Robertson 6-0.

Myburgh Wessels scored a hattrick against Robertson, while Jacques Van Dyk added a double and Charl Van Niekerk made it half-a-dozen for Stellies.

Fairmont High School and Worcester Gymnasium will also be high in confidence after delivering strong performances during the round-robin stages. They’ll take on Stellenberg and York High respectively in the quarterfinals. Outeniqua will face Namibia’s Private School Swakopmund for a place in the semi-finals.

The other Plate quarterfinals see Hudson Park facing Durbanville and Paarl Boys’ High battling Windhoek High.

DF Malan will tackle Stirling High in the Shield quarterfinals, with Woodridge College up against Northcliff High in the Super Bowl quarterfinals.

On Friday, at the Hartleyvale A Astroturf, the action starts at 09:10, when SACS plays St John’s College.

The Cup quarterfinals will be contested on the Hartleyvale A and B Astros, from 12:40, with the semi-finals to follow later in the day.

  • DAY 1 | Girls | Teams turn it up on Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament opening day

Photo: Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament
Photo: Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament

The front-runners in the girls’ section of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament were quickly revealed on the opening day in Cape Town on Wednesday.

A total of 12 teams picked up two wins each, including Middelburg, DF Malan, Hoërskool Nelspruit, Paarl Gimnasium, Fairmont High, Somerset College, Stellenberg, Rustenburg Girls’, Outeniqua, Penryn College, Northcliff High, and Namibia’s Windhoek Gymnasium.

They will all be aiming to secure their places in the playoffs after Thursday’s matches.

The annual tournament, which is hosted at eight different venues, lived up to the opening day hype, with some interesting results being produced, including a couple of shocks.

Last year’s winners, Monument High School, who were drawn in Pool G, found the going tricky, winning one match and drawing their second fixture at the Rustenburg Astroturf.

They beat Belville High School 2-0, with Keila Meyer and Hannah Smyth getting onto the scoresheet, but they were then held to a 0-0 draw by Kingswood College. On Thursday, Monnas face Stellenbosch High School and Wynberg Girls’.

East London’s Hudson Park High, despite a win and a loss, will feel they’re still in with a shot at finishing first in their pool.

Jordyn Wilson struck four times in their opening encounter, a 6-0 drubbing of Hugenote, which also included goals from Inathi Lubelwana and Busiwe Mayekiso.

Next time out, though, they went down 1-3 to Middelburg.

Woodridge College lies second in Pool B, while Stirling High School is third in Pool C. They’ll be aiming to make Thursday moving day.

Stirling goes up against Rustenburg Girls’ and St George’s Diocesan School, while Woodridge battles DF Malan and Pro-Ed Akademie.

With playoff places on the line, all-out goal-scoring action is the forecast for day two.

Paarl Gimnasium, Somerset College, Fairmont High School, Stellenberg, Worcester Gymnasium, alongside Windhoek High School were the only teams that recorded two victories on the opening day of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament in Cape Town.

The tournament welcomed 80 boys’ and girls’ schools from across South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

To accommodate the massive numbers, matches are being played at eight venues, including the Hartleyvale A and B Astro turfs, Pinelands, Rustenburg Girls’, SACS, Wynberg A and B, and the University of Cape Town (UCT).

In the boys’ section, the SACS Invitational side kicked matters off with a 2-0 win over Hugenote. That was followed by a 1-1 draw between Bridge House, and DF Malan.

Last year’s winners, Paarl Gimnasium were soon in action at the UCT Astro, and blasted past Belville High, scoring 12 unanswered goals. Juan Swanepoel netted four times, while LD Nel, Rikus de Kock and Neil De Wet claimed doubles. Solitary goals from Stefan Wiehahn and Stephan Pieterse completed the scoring.

The side from Paarl followed up that win with a comfortable 5-0 triumph over Hoërskool Nelspruit.

Somerset College, another of the top challengers from the Western Cape, didn’t disappoint. They took their opportunities well to grab the Pool D lead.

Coach Mick Ouwerkerk‘s boys entered the tournament on the back of a mixed bag of results at the Bishops 175 Hockey Festival last weekend.

They showed they had put any issues behind them by demolishing The Settlers High School 8-0, with Michael Du Toit, Tyrone Rieth, and Luke Limbert all netting braces, and Travis Coenraad, and Connor Murphy striking, too, to make it eight.

In their second outing, Somerset defeated Hoërskool Rustenburg 1-0. On Thursday, they take on Kingswood College and Windhoek Gymnasium.

The Pool E lead belongs to Durbanville’s Fairmont High School. They were well prepared for the tournament after playing in the York Easter Hockey Festival in George last week. There, Fairmont won three of their five matches, drew one, and went down 0-1 to York High.

They were back on a winning track quickly on Wednesday, however, scoring a tight 3-2 win over Stellenbosch High School in their opener.

Kyle Maclean’s pair and a Thomas Day goal sealed the win, despite Martin Botha scoring twice for Stellies.

Stellenberg and Worcester Gymnasium sit atop Pools F and G respectively after picking up two wins apiece.

The SACS invitational team and Stirling High will need to lift their games on day two if they are to take over the top spot in Pool A, which is currently occupied by Namibia’s Private School Swakopmund.

After a win and a draw against DF Malan, Outeniqua leads Pool B. Their Thursday schedule includes matches against Zimbabwe’s St John’s College, and Bridge House.

Pool H hangs in the balance. York High is in top spot, just ahead of Durbanville.

Woodridge College, under coach Josie Greener, is still winless after playing to draws against Strand High and Hermanus respectively.

Day two of the boys’ section swings into action with a clash between Paarl Boys’ High and Langenhoven Gimnasium.

York High takes on Woodridge, and Durbanville will close matters off at Hartleyvale A against Hermanus.

  • Province dominates u16 Currie Cup to claim top honours

The Western Province u16 team after claiming Gold at this year's u16 Currie Cup in East London.
The Western Province u16 team after claiming Gold at this year’s u16 Currie Cup in East London.

The Western Province u16 boys’ team was the undoubted class of the field as they powered their way to the title at the Junior Water Polo Championships, hosted in East London over the weekend.

The tournament followed on the heels of the u18 competition, which saw Central Gauteng win both the boys’ and girls’ titles at the Joan Harrison Swimming Pools.

Province sprinted to the boys’ u16 title by defeating KwaZulu-Natal 22-10 in the final, while the girls’ honours went to Central Gauteng, who were pushed hard by KZN, before triumphing 8-6 in the title-decider.

On their journey to the final, coach Kwakhona Ngwanya’s Western Province side dominated their round-robin clashes, blasting through all of their opponents.

They opened with a 23-6 thumping of Nelson Mandela Bay, before claiming a 16-1 win over the hosts, Buffalo City.

In their last round-robin clash, they made light work of Eden, scoring a whopping 24 goals, while conceding only three.

Their semi-final opponents, Central Gauteng, were expected to be their toughest opposition. Coach Ngwanya’s boys, however, were not phased, and continued their prolific run, outscoring the Johannesburg team 12-3 to reach the final.

In their four matches preceding the title-decider, Province had scored a cracking 75 goals and conceded only 13.

Then, in the final, they took their game up a notch. Province was dominant from the outset, playing an attacking brand of water polo which saw them dominate ball possession and territory for large portions of the match.

They used almost every opportunity they created and thumped KZN 22-10 to take home the gold medal.

Reacting to his side’s performances during the tournament, coach Ngwanya said it was an honour for him to work with a talented and hard-working group of players.

“I’m super privileged to be leading this group. I think they are a very determined bunch of kids,” he told SuperSport Schools.

When asked about the strategy, and approach they implemented for the tournament, he said: “We just decided to stay focused from the start.

“Our mentality was that we wanted to treat every game like a final, and we respected every opponent in front of us but knew we had to play good polo.

“We didn’t take any teams lightly. We certainly did our homework on both Gauteng and KZN.

“We played Gauteng in the semifinals, and we knew the final would depend on emotions and everything. The boys didn’t underestimate KZN, and as the result reads, they duly delivered.”

The squad featured many players with experience of plying their trade for their first teams at Cape Town’s top schools.

Matt Fenn and James Malan were standouts for Bishops, who enjoyed an excellent season, while Rondebosch’s Boys High’s Noah Reiback shone as his team claimed the KES Water Polo Tournament title.

Coach Ngwanya said the system is producing more quality players that polo enthusiasts can look forward to watching.

“I was impressed by our centre-back, Timothy Young. He’s just come into the Bishops’ first team this year,” Ngwanya said.

“He’s tall, has a good reach on him, and scored some fantastic goals from the halfway line, and he’s a star for the future.

“Our goalkeeper, Michael Mafunda, is also one to look out for. He is a leader and could be a head boy at Bishops.

“He is just a good person to have in the cage, and his communication is great.

“Another player would be Benjamin Bigara. He comes from a good water polo family, and he is very determined,” he added.

The Western Province u16 team will return to a happy hunting ground later this year when the annual Inter-Provincial tournament is hosted at the same venue in East London from 7-11 December.

  • Jam-packed Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament lands on Cape shores

The picturesque southern suburbs of Cape Town will host this year’s edition of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament from Wednesday, 27 March, with the boys’ and girls’ finals set to be contested on Saturday evening.

The festival brings 80 schools and 1 400 players together in the Mother City for four days of festivities.

Teams from South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, will be in attendance, bringing together an interesting mix of styles and approaches from within and beyond the country’s borders.

The matches will be hosted at eight venues, all Belgotex Sport-manufactured turfs.

These include the Hartleyvale A and B turfs, Pinelands, Rustenburg Girls’ High, SACS, Wynberg A and B, and the University of Cape Town (UCT).

The players will not only be battling for silverware but also for places in the Enhanced Sports Team, which will be selected after the tournament for a tour of Europe in September.

The festival organisers have also introduced a new initiative, to encourage players to play with a purpose through their partnership with Sport for Lives. Throughout the week, they will be raising funds to help two beneficiaries from the Maitland Children’s Hospital acquire mobility devices.

All eyes will, however, be on the turfs, with Paarl Gimnasium, in the boys’ section, and Krugersdorp’s Monument High, in the girls’ competition, returning to defend their titles.

Paarl Gim is drawn in Pool C, alongside Belville High, Punt, Nelspruit High School, and Namibia’s St George’s Diocesan School.

Meanwhile, it will be a tough ask for Monument to finish atop their group, which includes tough challengers in Stellenbosch High, Belville, Wynberg Girls’, and Kingswood College.

The Western Cape will be well represented. The boys’ section includes, among others, Hugenote, SACS, DF Malan, Outeniqua, Somerset College, Fairmont, and Worcester Gymnasium.

La Rochelle, Wynberg, and Rustenburg are some of the local girls’ teams to keep an eye on.

Representing the Eastern Cape are Stirling High, Hudson Park, Woodridge College and the aforementioned Kingswood College.

Namibia’s representation includes St George’s Diocesan School, Windhoek Gymnasium, Pro-ed Akademie, Private School Swakopmund, and Windhoek High School.

One of Zimbabwe’s top schools, St John’s College will also grace the festival and will go up against Bridge House, DF Malan, Outeniqua, and Pro-ed Akademie, in the pool stages.

The action kicks off on Hartleyvale A with a cracker between SACS and Hugenote High School at 08:00, while the other venues will run matches on a similar schedule.

Later, all the teams will assemble at the Hartleyvale A Astroturf for the opening ceremony, which starts at 19:30.

Bishops Diocesan College ended the Bishops 175 Hockey Festival as the only unbeaten team following a 4-0 trouncing of St Benedict’s College on the festival’s final day at the Woodlands Astroturf in Cape Town.

The hosts, who entered the tournament with momentum and confidence after winning all three of their matches at the Parel Vallei Boys’ Hockey Festival a week ago, continued their fine form, this time in front of their buzzing home supporters.

The festival’s opening day saw coach Ryan Julius‘s team brush off Michaelhouse with a commanding 3-1 win.

That was followed by a 4-0 win against St Charles College before they edged out St David’s Marist Inanda 2-0 on Friday.

The Cape side turned up the tempo on the third day, scoring 10 goals in their two matches while conceding only one. They netted eight times against Bloemfontein’s St Andrew’s School, before digging deep to claim a 2-1 win over Makhanda’s St Andrew’s College in the main game on day three.

In their final match of the festival, on Sunday, they took on another unbeaten side, St Benedict’s College. Prior to the clash, Bennies had recorded three wins and two draws.

With their legs tired after a long festival, Bishops were still sound on attack and defence, executing their game plan well. That delivered them a 4-0 victory, with regular goal scorers’ Luc Dicey, Christopher Gray, David Handley, and Joshua Mettler all getting onto the score sheet.

After a clean run through their opposition at the festival, which followed an unbeaten pre-season, the Bishops’ 1st XI’s record remains unblemished. Coach Julius says he’s happy with the progress his team has made.

“The boys were tired [in the final match], after a very busy week, but adapted well to the change of tactics,” he told SuperSport Schools.

“It was a very good team display. We asserted [our] dominance from the beginning.

“I was very happy to see that, especially to perform like that at the end of the tournament makes me proud as a coach, regarding the mindset and culture we’re trying to create within the group.”

Another result that caught the eye on the final day was Michaelhouse’s 3-0 victory over St Andrew’s College.

‘House entered the clash on the back of a 1-1 draw against Bennies, and a 2-0 win over the Langa Hockey Club on Saturday. They appear to be finding their way under new coach Nick Bérichon after a difficult 2023 season.

Meanwhile, St Andrew’s College had their unbeaten start to the season ended on Saturday, when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the hosts. On Sunday, Nicholas Fearnhead grabbed a double and Luke Camerer added a third to give Michaelhouse a confidence-boosting signature victory over College at the end of the festival.

St Charles and Somerset College also ended off with wins, defeating the Langa Hockey Club and St Andrew’s School respectively.

Somerset College’s Michael du Toit was named the Player of the Festival, while Byron Comley, of St Benedict’s, and James Grieve, of Bishops, were named Players of Note.

The Top Goal Scorer was St Andrew’s College’s Connor McNamara, with Bishops’ Robbie Veldtman the 2nd Top Goal Scorer.

The Defender of the Festival honours went to Marley Waspe of Uplands College, while Khotso Mabona, of St David’s Marist Inanda, and Pikolomzi Nkompela, of Michaelhouse, were recognised as Defenders of Note.

Bishops Diocesan College maintained their unbeaten record at the Bishops 175 Hockey Festival when they defeated St Andrew’s College 2-1 in the final match of day three at the Woodlands Astroturf in Cape Town on Saturday.

The Bishops’ win brought to an end an eight-game winning streak for the side from Makhanda.

Before the match, those two teams and St Benedict’s College were the only unbeaten sides and were gunning to keep those records intact ahead of the final day on Sunday.

The hosts beat Michaelhouse 3-1 on the opening day and followed up that result with a 4-0 win against St Charles College, before showing grit to beat St David’s Marist Inanda 2-0 on Friday.

They went on to annihilate St Andrew’s School 8-0 on Saturday, with James Grieve scoring a brace before Christopher Gray, Bryn Parry, Luc Dicey, Andrew Betty, Andrew Raubenheimer, and David Handley got themselves onto the scoresheet.

Coach Dean Ferreira‘s St Andrew’s College team, on the other hand, had caught the eye early in the season.

A week ago, at the Tony Godding Festival, they defeated Grey College 2-1, and claimed other victories over, among others, Hudson Park, Bethlehem Voortrekker, and Merrifield College.

At the Bishops Fest, they had claimed the scalps of the Langa Hockey Club, Uplands College, and St David’s Marist Inanda, before they faced the home team.

The contest started out very evenly, with both sides struggling to make an impression on the other’s defences in the first chukka.

Bishops, were, however, the first to open the scoring in the second chukka through a penalty stroke, with Robert Veldtman converting from the spot to put his side into the lead.

Minutes later, Bishops suffered a blow, when Thomas Malan had to leave the pitch after he suffered a hard blow on the wrist from the ball.

Bishops held onto that narrow 1-0 lead at the break, but St Andrew’s quickly equalised in the third chukka, with Connor McNamara striking from a penalty corner.

Heading into the final chukka, the teams were level at 1-1 and, it seemed, something special would be required to break the deadlock. Joshua Mettler duly delivered it.

He produced a brilliant individual goal, finding the back of the net after a superb 20-metre dribble. That was just enough, and coach Ryan Julius‘s side held on for a 2-1 win, much to the delight of the home supporters.

In other matches, Somerset College picked up another victory, edging Uplands College 4-3 in their first game, before playing to a 1-1 draw with St David’s Marist Inanda.

St Benedict’s College continued their fine form. After drawing 1-1 with Michaelhouse in the morning, they dominated Uplands College in the afternoon.

Coach Owen Mvimbi‘s side controlled possession and territory and were clinical in front of goal, which brought them a 5-0 victory, courtesy of an Alex Johnston double, with Connor Odgers, Timothy Burnham, and Marco Mendes also scoring.

The Johannesburg side will face its toughest challenge yet when they take on the hosts, Bishops, on Sunday in the final match of the festival at 12:40.

After claiming wins on Friday against Uplands and St Andrew’s School, Langa Hockey Club pushed St Andrew’s College all the way but went down 2-4 in their first match on Saturday.

In their second encounter of the day, they took on Michaelhouse and made life hard for the boys from the KZN Midlands. It was 0-0 at halftime, with neither side able to capitalise on the opportunities they had created.

‘House, however, came out firing in the third chukka, and scored twice to seize victory.

Another team that also got a “W” next to their name was St David’s Marist Inanda, who edged out St Charles College 2-1. They will take on the winless Uplands College in Sunday’s first match, at 08:00.

Langa will aim to end their campaign with a win against St Charles College, while Somerset College completes their schedule against Bloemfontein’s St Andrew’s School.
