  • Durban Girls College aiming higher than just third place in this year’s Super 12-tournament

Durban Girls College aiming higher than just third place in this year’s Super 12-tournament

Durban Girls College will kick off their Super 12 campaign with intentions of finishing in a better position than they did last year.

The Durban side took away the bronze medal in last year’s campaign, and after some impressive, dominant, and statement setting performances which have seen them ranked seventh during the season, confidence will not be an issue for the side.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Since their inclusion in the tournament, which was back in 2014, Girls College have made some strides which cannot be overlooked in the competition.

In 2014, they finished in seventh spot against South Africa’s top schools, just like how it will be this coming week. In 2015, Girls College dropped the bar, finishing in eighth position.

That would be the last time the school took part in the tournament as a six-year absence, two of those years being affected by COVID-19 meant the side could only return to the competition last year.

If form is anything to go by, College will be beaming with confidence considering they recently won the latest grand finals of the Spar Hockey Challenge hosted in St Mary’s DSG in Kloof.

In that tournament, the side were unbeaten playing some attractive hockey which landed them a spot in the final against St Mary’s.

In the final, Chardinay Penniston’s side dominated proceedings, scoring two goals through Ruby Kraus, and Hannah Hargroves.

That win will certainly spring the side in the right direction in terms of the mental fitness, and endurance needed going into a highly competitive super 12 competition.

The player that has been dubbed the “player to look out for” in the side is Tara Pakendorf, who made her first team debut for the side in 2021 and also made the SA Schools team after this year’s SASHOC tournament in Bloemfontein.

However, its important to note that the likes of Salma Bejia, Ruby Kraus, Nandi Mnyandu and skipper Jenna Reardon are also deadly players that pose a threat to the opposition. On top of that, they are among the list of eight players who made their debuts in 2021, meaning that the side is not short of any experienced players.

    Fixtures:

On day one, the Durban side will open their account against Garsfontein at 11:40. They will then face Bloemhof at 15:50 in round two before concluding their day with a mouthwatering fixture against Rhenish at 20:00.

On day two, the side will play Eunice at 12:30 and conclude their round robin stage with a fixture against Pearson High at 16:40 before the play-offs begin.

    The team:

Durban Girls College: Cara Baker, Salma Bejia, Caprice Bengtson, Ella Carstens, Hannah Hargroves, Ruby Kraus, Emily Macquet, Nandi Mnyandu, Erin Moodleu, Tara Pakendorf, Taegan Price, Jenna Reardon, Georgina Stephenson, Natalie Taylor, Olivia Verster, Chelsey Woolf.

  • Goals galore as Jeppe and Affies finish the season on a high

Goals galore as Jeppe and Affies finish the season on a high

    PHOTO: Theo Garrun

There were wins for Affies, Jeppe Boys High, and Selborne College this past weekend in some thrilling derbies across the country.

Staring in Gauteng, where Jeppe hosted Durban High School, in a match that turned out to be closer than many expected.

Going into the match, Jeppe were certainly favourites while DHS on the other hand were playing to prove that their superb season was in no way shaped by “luck.”

The clash was a tightly contested one, with the Gauteng side relying on two goals from Jaydon Brooker, both coming from the short corner. Ben Benjamin, who has featured frequently in the side and in the goal-scoring charts was also among the goal scorers.

The home-side were however challenged in the game as DHS refused to go down without a fight. In fact, the Durban side opened the scoring with six minutes to play in the first quarter when Leruo Ditlakhanyane pounced on a loose ball after a short corner to slot in the opening goal of the encounter.

Brooker replied with a well-worked goal in the second quarter to see the home side draw back and level things out with two quarters to go.

The third quarter produced no goals, and that meant both sides went into the fourth and final with a gaol apiece.

The hosts quickly changed that as Brooker and Benjamin opened up a two-goal lead for the home side. DHS captain, Lumi Matwele scored a consolation goal for the visitors, to see the match ending (3-2).

In other matches, Affies managed to get one past their old foes Pretoria Boys High, outscoring them by two goals to one. King Edward suffered their second straight defeat when they lost to Maritzburg College.

In the Eastern Cape, Selborne College recorded an emphatic victory against Dale College, scoring seven goals and conceding only one. Whereas Woodridge College, and Cambridge High School bagged wins over Westering and Stirling High School respectively.

    Scorers:

Jeppe High School for Boys 3 (Jaydon Brooker (2), Ben Benjamin); Durban High School 2 (Lumi Matwele, Leruo Ditlakhanyane.

Affies 2 (Louw du Preez, Enzo Swart); Pretoria Boys High 1.

Selborne College 7 (Ben van der Merwe (3), Cade Kock (2), Jaques van der Merwe, Kunga Macanda); Dale College 1 (Amangile Songelwa).

    Other results:

Cambridge 1, Stirling 0; Woodridge College 2, Westering High 0; Maritzburg College 1, King Edward VII 0.

  • A miracle needed for Dale College to beat Selborne this weekend

A miracle needed for Dale College to beat Selborne this weekend

Dale College will go into Friday’s clash against an unbeaten Selborne College side knowing that nothing short of a miracle will be needed to win the clash that has been one-sided for the longest time.

Dale has had one of their most unconvincing seasons, losing several matches on the way come up against a side in form, and looking to close off the season unbeaten in the Province.

In their latest fixture against Selborne, the Dale boys lost (6-0) in East London and with their latest match resulting in the same score against Makhanda’s St Andrews College, the mountain will be steeper for the side.

A fixture that turned out to be one-sided, with St Andrews whipping the home side, and scoring six goals while Dale only managed a solitary goal by Gavin Walton.

That result epitomized the type of season Dale College has endured on the turf.

    When
SuperSport Schools spoke to the assistant coach of the team, Andrew Senekal in May ahead of their clash against Queens, the coach mentioned that the side was suffering mentally from the long run without a win.

“There are various challenges that we’ve had, and coming from the festival where we didn’t get any wins, it’s tough,” he said at the time

“A lot of the mental aspect is low at the moment; we are trying to get the boys in the correct mental head space and get them to work together again.”

One may argue that the side needed the mid-year break to work on some tactical issues and potentially come back stronger to end the year on a positive note.

Since then, the side came back and drew with Stirling High (1-1) before the St Andrews thumping.

If a draw against the East London side is anything to draw confidence from, the side will aim to shift that confidence and energy into the Selborne clash.

The side from East London has remained consistent throughout the whole year. They have managed to maintain their attractive style of play which has seen them counterattack teams and force errors.

In their last match, they thumped Queens College (9-2) in the FNB Classic Clash.

That performance certainly delivered a statement that, the season might be coming to an end, but KJ Friend’s side is still eager to play.

In saying so, the side will travel to King knowing exactly where to punish Dale’s defence which has been shaky all season. As for Dale, a miracle of some sort will be needed to keep a side fired up to finish in the top 20 in the school rankings away.

The action between the sides kicks off at 16:00

    The teams:

Dale College: Inga Mafanga, Gavin Walton, Sbongisile Nzima, Kamva Tolwana, Hlumelo Ntlola, Joe Mendoza, Siyabonga Madlwabinga, Akanani Msutu, Lihumelo Ncukana, Caleb Ellis, Amangile Songelwa, Endinako Mnguni, Hlomla Kostauli, Naledi Mosebi.

Selborne College: Charlie Caswell, Gray van Heerden, Daniel Gaylard, Shane Stagg, Ben van der Merwe ( C ), Masibulela Siswana, Tre’ Gilbert, Daniel Conroy, Jaques van der Merwe, James Carr, Daniel Sirgel, Lunga Malusi, Waeden Plaatjes, Cade Kock.

    Other matches:

Woodridge College host Westering High School, while Stirling High School play Cambridge.

St Andrews College, and Kingswood College have wrapped up their respective seasons while Queens College and Grey High will have a break before their final matches of the season in the following week.

    Fixtures:

16:00 – Dale College vs Selborne College

17:20 – Cambridge High School  vs Stirling High School

19:25 – Woodridge College vs Westering High School

  • Rich history and bragging rights on the line as Affies host Pretoria Boys’ High

Rich history and bragging rights on the line as Affies host Pretoria Boys’ High

The Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool of Pretoria’s head coach, Blake Goosen says his side will need no further motivation when they host arch-rivals, Pretoria Boys’ High this coming weekend.

Both sides will be playing their final match of the season, and after a lengthy, challenging and taxing season, both teams will be out to finish on a high.

Speaking to SuperSport Schools during the week, Goosen reflected on his side’s season, highlighting some of the standout matches, while keeping an eye on Boys High come Saturday morning.

“When looking back, I feel that it has been a very positive season for our first team,” he said.

“We have let one or two games slip that we shouldn’t have, but we have also produced some great performances when we have played our brand of hockey.”

“I’m very happy with the direction the team is headed, on and off the field.”

Just like other hockey playing schools in the country, Affies had a long season which started sometime in March.

In April however, the side managed to pull off a victory for the ages when they defeated Paarl Gimnasium.

“Our performance away against Paarl Gim in April stands out as the biggest highlight of the season,” added Goosen.

“To grab a 3-2 win against a very tough team like themselves, away from home, and in front of their home support on a Friday evening was very special.”

In their previous two matches ahead of the clash on Saturday, Affies have managed to rank up some good performances, playing out a (2-2) draw with Maritzburg College before defeating Waterkloof.

Goosen believes the matches have set them up perfectly for the final match of the season.

“Our past two weekends have been successful outings for us, and very positive.”

“We would still like to see our boys being more clinical upfront and finishing off the opportunities created.”

“In a big derby like this, we hope to see our boys step up for one last time.”

In what is considered as the oldest Derby that has taken place annually since 1923, Affies will know and understand the threats posed by Boys High.

The likes of Louw du Preez and Uys Prinsloo who have been our rocks in the midfield, according to the coach will need to step up and take authority in that part of the field.

Kyle Cronje has been a versatile all-rounder making a massive impact in the teams press and on counter attacks. Goosen says the anchors in defence have been Liam de Waal and Guihom Mouton who have marshalled the team superbly.

Kick off between the sides is 10:00 at the AHMP Astroturf.

In other matches on during the weekend, Jeppe Boys High will revive its rivalry with Durban High School when the Durban side visit Gauteng.

While King Edward will make the long trip to Pietermaritzburg to face Maritzburg College in what will also be their last fixture of the season.

    The teams:

Affies: Owen Kleinhans, Jacques Lamprecht, Janu Venter, Wian van Rooyen, Uys Prinsloo, Hendrik Combrink, Thato Mamogale, Louw du Preez, Guihom Mouton, Wimpie Pohlman, Wian Boshoff, Wouter Cloete, Kyle Cronje, Henri van Tonder, Enzo Swart, Wian van Schalkwyk.

Pretoria Boys High: Stewart Pringle, Hashil Lakha, Robert Hassenkamp, Dewald Griesel, Jayden Boshoff, Micah Sonn, David Baxter, Marco Upton, Daniel Manley, Jeron Hugo, Likho Dube, Cameron Davids, Michael Robertson, Ruard Booysen.

    Fixtures:

19:15- Jeppe Boys High vs Durban High School

Jeppe and Affies claim crucial wins against KES and Waterkloof

There were wins for Jeppe High School for Boys and Affies in Gauteng this past weekend as they took on King Edward, and Waterkloof respectively.

Jeppe, who went into their game against KES as favourites scored a whopping six goals and managed to hold off their opposition who failed to score in the game.

The home side started the match on a positive note, passing the ball around, and forcing the opposition into defensive mode.

They scored three goals in the first quarter through a brace by Miguel de Jesus, and one goal from Boipelo Koloti.

Jeppe remained consistent in attack, and forced KES into making more mistakes in the second quarter. The quarter only saw one goal, a well executed short corner, that saw Jaydon Brooker beat two defenders to score for his side’s fourth.

Selborne dominate Queens, while Grey High get past one Grey College in Gqeberha

    BEN VAN DER MERWE

Two hat-tricks for Selborne College scored by Ben van der Merwe and Cade Kock secured an emphatic (9-2) win for the East London side against their arc rival, Queens College in the FNB Classic Clash encounter in East London on Saturday.

Selborne, who defeated their rivals 3-1 in the first leg earlier in the year, went into the game high in confidence after winning their first match from the mid-year break against Hudson Park (3-2).

The side, coached by KJ Friend and led by Ben van der Merwe also went into the game with an unbeaten record in the Eastern Cape having only played to a draw with Pearson High School from Gqeberha earlier on in the year.

Van der Merwe and Kock have been goal-scoring machines for the side throughout the year. The pair also represented the Amathole u18 side during the SAHOC tournament in Bleomfontein in June.

The other two players that scored goals were Waeden Plaajies, and Thomas Caswell to wrap up a 9-2 in a dominant performance.

  • Van Rensburg and troops look to bounce back against Grey High

Van Rensburg and troops look to bounce back against Grey High

    PHOTO: Marnus van Wyk

Grey College captain, Roan Janse van Rensburg believes his side are in for another tough clash when they travel down to meet Grey High School in the battle of the Grey’s in Gqeberha this coming weekend.

Van Rensburg, who has been instrumental in the Grey side this season will be hoping for a polished performance when he leads out his troops at the Rectory Astro against an in-form Grey High side on Friday night.

The traveling side will also be looking to bounce back after they succumbed to a shocking (3-2) defeat against Fichardtpark during the week.

In an interview with SuperSport Schools during the week, the skipper said his side are relishing the opportunity of coming up against one of the best schools in the country.

“It’s always special travelling down to PE (Gqeberha). It is always a tough game but when know your whole school stands behind you it gives us the motivation to fight till the end,” he said.

“There have been ups and downs (this season), but we’ve kept our heads high, and we’ve grown stronger as a team.”

“We’ve stayed together through the tough times and there were times where we reached our full potential.”

Van Rensburg is among a list of players from Grey that represented the Southern Free State team in the recently concluded SASHOC u18 tournament hosted in Bloemfontein.

However, the provincial team couldn’t quite get going in the tournament as they finished in 10th spot. Despite that disappointment, Van Rensburg finished the tournament as second top goal scorer with seven goals and earned himself a spot in the SA ‘A’ team, an honour he will embrace for the rest of his life.

“IPT (SASHOC) was a big challenge for the Southern Free State hockey team, but we never gave up. I feel we improved as players, and it is always a great privilege to represent the province,” he said.

“It was also a great privilege to be selected in the SA team. I couldn’t have done it without the Sothern Free State team. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the opportunity to play as a team, but it would have been great fun to play.”

The Skipper believes that If you have a dream you have to believe it otherwise it will just stay dream. His dream this weekend will be to beat Grey High and return to the Free State with bragging right. Besides that, the youngster and his side will also be playing for the pride of the team, as he looks to lead by example and leave the Grey College jersey in a better place.

  • EXCLUSIVE: SA’s rising star, Jaydon Brooker is just getting started

EXCLUSIVE: SA’s rising star, Jaydon Brooker is just getting started

    PHOTO: Theo Garrun

The term “generational talent” often refers to a person who changes the perspective of a certain sporting code, the way the game is played, and how they are remembered when their time is up in a particular team.

That term certainly resonates with one player that has caught the eye of many schoolboy hockey enthusiasts in South Africa, and that name is Jaydon Brooker.

Brooker, who ploughs his trade for the Jeppe High School for Boys first hockey side is undoubtably one of the most skilled, committed, and talented schoolboy hockey players the country has ever produced.

The confident yet humble 18-year-old started his hockey career at Jeppe Prep, and switching to another school after his primary days was never a consideration. Instead, Brooker was set on carrying on the rich history and legacy left behind by those who came before him.

Described as a humble, selfless, and team player by one of his coaches, Lydon Smith, Brooker has since gone on to represent the men in black and white stripe for three years, making the provincial team and SA Schools side in the process.

His attacking flare and eye the game has made him a threat to be reckoned with, and this is evident with the 49 goals he has accumulated over the course of the current season.

In a long-awaited interview with SuperSport Schools, the SA prodigy outlined how his team have grown throughout the season, also mentioning the strides he’s taken in achieving his personal goals.

“I do think the team has improved this season, it’s been a good season for us despite the two losses against St Stithians College and St Johns, besides that it’s been a wonderful season,” he said.

“We have formed good relationships and learnt to accommodate one another, and we enjoy each other’s company on and off the field.”

“I must say, I do think we’re much better than we were last year, result wise.”

During the mid-year school break, Brooker was part of the team selected to represent the Southern Gauteng side at the annual SASHOC u18 tournament held in Bloemfontein this year.

Despite his side coming short in the final, losing to Western Province (3-1) after cruising in the group stages, Brooker finished the tournament as top goal scorer with 10 goals scored during the week.

To top it off, he received the player of the tournament accolade and was immediately selected to represent the South African u18 team which faced the SA U21’s in a two-match series at the same venue.

“The IPT (SASHOC) was one for the books,” he recalled.

“I’ll never forget it because I formed so many relationships with boys, I never thought I would. The hockey at Provincial level is not the same at schoolboy level, I must say. It’s a lot tougher because in schoolboy hockey there’s the odd one or two boys In a team that standout whereas in a provincial team there’s probably eight or nine good players in one team.”

“But yes, its competitive and you gain a lot, you learn a lot and it has made me a better player.”

Soon after finishing second in the Provincial tournament, Brooker was tasked with the challenge of shifting his focus to the SA Schools team that faced the SA u21 side.

The u21 side were using the series to prepare for their upcoming World Cup in Malaysia later this year. Brooker lined up against the likes of Ross Breytenbach, Damian Knott and one of the Cassiem brothers, Mustaphaa Cassiem.

He admits that playing in that level is a moment he will cherish for the rest of his life.

“It’s always wonderful playing for your country, I mean last year, I missed out – I thought I had the ability to make the SA Schools team last year already but unfortunately I didn’t because of how I performed at IPT,” added Brooker.

“Playing this year was really an experience I hope hockey players coming through the pipeline get to experience and cherish because like I’ve learnt a lot of things – the intensity is way more and it was good – I learnt a lot especially playing against the u21’s. That certainly made me a better hockey player.”

Brooker and his side will face King Edward this week, better known as KES in one of the most highly anticipated matches in the school’s calendar. The “brothers in motion” as he calls them will to look to replicate their emphatic (5-1) victory against Parktown Boys a week ago.

The home side will also be aiming for a double over their rivals after beating them (3-1) in the first match early this year.

The fixture will also see Brooker and other players in the side play their last fixture for the school against their old foes. History favours the hosts who haven’t lost to KES since 2014, however, Brooker says the team needs to stay calm and treat the match just like any other, despite the huge occasion.

“Playing KES is always nice; you get to play against your mates from a rival school, but it will be just another game and we shouldn’t think of the occasion even though its big,” he said.

“I mean this is the fixture that means the most to the old boys and the school – I understand the history behind it – this is one game we look forward to the most – but we shouldn’t overthink it.

“I’m really excited, I mean this will be some of the boys last one against KES, so we need to make the most of it.”

The action between Jeppe Boys and King Edward kicks off at 16:30 on Friday. Catch all the action on SuperSport Schools.

In other fixtures to look out for during the weekend, Affies will host Waterkloof while Pretoria Boys High travel to lock heads with Maritzburg College. Parktown Boys will be looking to end off the season with a win when they take on Garsfontein away from home.

    The teams:

  • Stirling relishing a SPAR Hockey Challenge triumph on home soil

Stirling relishing a SPAR Hockey Challenge triumph on home soil

Stirling High School head coach, Greg Davis says his side are eager to test themselves against the best in the Spar Hockey challenge set to take place on Sunday in East London.

Stirling, who will be hosting eight other teams on the day will face John Bisseker, Lilyfontein, Merrifield College and Clarendon Girls for school in the round robin stages.

In order to progress to the final, the hosts will need to finish first in Pool A.

Speaking exclusively to SuperSport Schools ahead of the tournament, Davis says it will be an honour playing, and facing tough opposition on their home ground.

“Playing at home is always an honour and having the opportunity to play against Clarendon will be a challenge in itself but one the girls are looking forward to,” he said.

“We are definitely looking forward to Sunday for sure, it’s going to be another great day of hockey,” he added.

In recent years, Stirling has had the upper hand on many schools in the region.

Alongside Clarendon, the school has been successful on the turf, beating tough oppositions with their smart, and calculated counter attacking style of play. The school has also gone out of its way to organize more challenging fixtures for the team.

Evidence of this can be traced to this season where they faced one of the top schools in the country, Oranje Meisies for the first time in their history. The side also defeated Voortrekker (3-2) early in the year, bouncing back from a humiliating (9-0) defeat last year.

“We are fortunate to have played Oranje Meisies this year. The first ever meeting against each other and we got to see why they are number one in the country and hopefully what we need to improve to be able to compete with a school like that.”

“We have also been able to play quite a few schools in the Top 15 on the rankings and we competed with them nicely.”

“Our match against Voortrekker early in the year set us up for the entire season. The girls played really well against a very strong side and bounced back from a heavy (9-0) loss in 2022 to beat them in 2023. It was an awesome game,” added Davis.

The team captained by Linamandla Mxinwa will look to add to their experiences so far in the season come Sunday. Their toughest opposition will be Town rivals, Clarendon High at 12:10.

The last time the sides met before the mid-year school break, Clarendon won the match (1-0) in tough wet conditions. This time around, Stirling will look to get one over their rivals.

An extra layer of confidence will be taken from the (4-1) the side registered against UK team KES.

Other matches to look out include the match between Cambridge and Hudson, with Cambridge coming into the game high in confidence after thrashing their past pupils (6-1) in a friendly during the week. John Bisseker and Green point will also look to leave a mark against the powerhouse teams.

Head injury brings a halt to the clash between Pearson and Punt

A serious head injury sustained by a player from Punt High School brought an abrupt ending to the match between Pearson High School and Punt in Gqeberha this past weekend.

The player sustained the injury with 11 minutes left to play in the final quarter.

In the three quarters, where play was normal, Pearson dominated proceedings, resuming their season with an emphatic (6-0) win.

The side from Gqeberha has been one of the teams to beat in the Eastern Cape this year, and having caused problems for a variety of schools across the country were looking to pick up from where they left off before the mid-year break.

The team did exactly that, dominating proceedings and opening the scoring with eight minutes played in the first quarter. Their assertive, counterattacking, and fast paced game saw Ignatius Malgraf’s side score a further five goals within the first three chukkas.

Punt had their opportunities, however, resolute defence from the home side resulted in a clean sheet for their keeper. The injury struck in the fourth quarter when the player was hit with a ball on the head.

Pearson coach, Ignatius Malgraf confirmed the incident to SuperSport Schools.

“We had a serious head injury, and the game was called off. All the girls were in tears,” he said.

In other matches around the province, on Friday night, Clarendon continued their fine form when they put four past Hudson Park.
