  • Unstoppable SACS side roars on against Paul Roos Gimnasium

Unstoppable SACS side roars on against Paul Roos Gimnasium

CAPE TOWN- “Dominant, unstoppable, and lightning quick.”

Those would be the ideal words to describe the masterclass performance produced by SACS to overpower Paul Roos (8-1) in the clash of the titans at the Brewery this past weekend.

Playing each other for the third time this year, after Paul Roos won the Hibbert Shield final in Gqeberha, while SACS prevailed in another encounter at Maties, the match was dubbed as a decider to which team would end the year ranked first in the country.

SACS were outstanding, to say the least, as they quickly rushed to a (3-1) lead in the first quarter.

The second quarter only produced one goal, scored by Liam Haupt, who also featured for Western Province in the recently concluded SASHOC hockey tournament in Bloemfontein.

The delay in goals didn’t trouble the home side though, as they returned and scored four more goals between the third and fourth chukka to make their eight. Michael Cowen, and Dean Carrick who both led the Western Province to gold in Bloemfontein were on the score sheets for the Cape side.

While Rowan Davis, Ozair Pillai, and Litha Kraai also scored in the second half.

Reacting to the match, SACS head coach, Pierre Le Roux said he was satisfied with how quickly his side managed to apply pressure on the visitors.

“We asserted dominance early on, leaving PRG struggling to keep up with the high pace,” Le Roux told SuperSport Schools after the match.

“The game started with a bang as we quickly netted two goals, putting pressure on our opponents from the outset.”

“Our fast ball movement kept PRG defending and struggling to find a foothold in the match.”

Despite missing out on a clean sheet, conceding fewer goals is becoming a norm in the SACS side especially when Rogan Stirk is in the form of his life.

Le Roux also praised his keeper for an outstanding performance between the poles, while also crediting playmaker, Michael Royden Turner who caused the opposition problems during the match.

“Goalkeeper Rogan Stirk proved his mettle, expertly handling the few chances PRG managed to create, ensuring their efforts were fruitless,” he added.

“However, the true star of the night was undeniably Michael Royden Turner, who wreaked havoc in PRG’s goal area and was rightfully man of the match.”

The win means that SACS has managed to defeat every team they’ve come across in the Western Cape so far this season.

However, their season is far from over, and the following fixtures which include teams like DF Malan, Fairmont, and Stellenberg will want to cause the powerhouse side issues before the season concludes.

    Scorers:

SACS 8 (Litha Kraai (2), Michael Royden-Turner, Michael Cowen, Liam Haupt, Rowan Davis, Ozair Pillai, Dean Carrick); Paul Roos Gimansium 1 (Louan van Zyl).

Jeppe High School for Boys pulled off another impressive performance to dismantle Parktown Boys’ High (5-1) in the highly anticipated Gauteng derby this past weekend.

The boys from Kensington in Johannesburg entered the game high in spirits after a solid base was laid in the first half of the year.

The boys were tasked with maintaining a six-year record of beating Parktown on the Astroturf while also looking to replicate their previous (5-1) from last season.

Jeppe, who were playing with beeps on top of their t-shirts to avoid kit confusion with their hosts started the game on the front foot, attacking early on in the game.

It only took the visiting side, six minutes to score the opener via a penalty corner that was slotted in by the ever-present Jaydon Brooker.

The side grew confidence as the game went by and were dominant in possession and territory.

Brooker quickly scored his second closer to the end of the first chukka through another well-worked PC. The visitors led (2-0) after the first chukka.

The second quarter produced a similar picture, with Jeppe bossing proceedings, while Parktown were forced into defence mode. The only goal in the quarter came from Boipelo Koloti, who found himself at the right place to slot in for his side’s third of the match.

Parktown only had one opportunity by then. A penalty corner that was saved by the keeper. The visitors led (3-0) at the halfway mark.

The last two quarters provided three goals, two from the visitors and a consolation goal for the hosts. All in all, the home side were dominated and outplayed by a quicker, better, and more skilled Jeppe side.

The search for a win against their old rivals continues.

Another big clash in the region over the weekend saw Maritzburg College travel from Pietermaritzburg to face Affies in the Inter-school’s clash.

The sides played out to a (2-2) draw in what was described as a “closely contested encounter between two evenly matched teams,” by Affies head coach, Blake Goosen.

Goosen, who spoke to SuperSport Schools after the match said he was happy with his team’s performance despite feeling like they let the match slip away.

“We took the early lead from a penalty corner but then generously allowed College to come back into the game and take the lead 2-1,” he said.

“An Affies team never backs down or lacks fight and we showed that once again as we continued to go on the attack and eventually take one of our many short corner opportunities to level the game 2-2.”

“Although we felt we left ourselves one goal short on the pitch, we were happy with the team’s performance after a short turn around coming back from school holidays.”

The Pretoria side will shift its attention to Waterkloof for the next weekend while Maritzburg College will welcome Pretoria Boys High.

Pretoria Boys High also edged out King Edward VII (1-0) in one of the big matches played during the weekend.

    Scorers:

Jeppe High School for Boys 5 (Jaydon Brooker (2), Boipelo Koloti, Miguel de Jesus, Ben Benjamin); Parktown Boys’ High 1: (Takudzwa Makhudo).

Affies 2 (Louw du Preez, Wian van Schalkwyk); Maritzburg College 2 (Banele Dlamini, Siwa Sithembu).

Pretoria Boys’ High 1 (Micha Sonn); King Edward VII 0.

The resumption of the hockey season after the mid-year break saw a total of 32 goals scored across seven highly contested fixtures in the Eastern Cape this past weekend.

Out of those 32, Kingswood College contributed 14 goals from their two fixtures played on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The Makhanda side started their weekend off with a (4-1) victory against Gqeberha’s Alexander Road High School. That match also saw Jean-Luc Basson get his 50th first team cap for the side.

If dominance was anything to go by on Friday, the side certainly turned up the tempo on Saturday, bringing a whole different ball game to the table.

They took on Framesby away from home and scored an emphatic 10 goals while only conceding two on the day. Another hattrick of players were playing their 50th games for the school on the day. Stephen Aylesbury, Michael Van Staden, and Brad Goss were all given a guard of honour before the match.

Basson, who had received his 50th cap the day before and who has been a goal scoring machine for the side, scored a hattrick on the day. Two separate braces by Stephen Aylesbury, and Chris Painting then allowed Brad Goss, Daniel Phillips, and Peter Van Der Meulen to all add a goal each and reach the final 10 goals.

The win will come as a confidence booster for Jason Machlachlan and his side. Before the school break, they narrowly lost to town rivals St Andrews (1-0) before coming short against Woodridge College (2-1).

However, confidence will be high after scoring 14 goals in two matches. They next face Graeme College, in a mid-week fixture on Wednesday.

In other matches around the province and keeping it in Makhanda, St Andrews thumped Cambridge High (6-0) at home.

Merrifield College pulled off one the upsets of the season when they defeated a travelling Queens College side (1-0).

In East London, Hudson Park came short against Selborne College, losing (3-2) on Friday night, while Stirling High Schools played off to a 0ne-all draw against King Williams Town’s Dale College.

In the last game on Friday night, Grey High School managed a (1-0) win against York High in George.

    Scorers:

Kingswood College 10 (Jean-Luc Basson (3), Chris Painting (2), Stephen Aylesbury (2), Brad Goss, Daniel Phillips, Peter van der Meulen); Framesby 2 (scorers not provided).

St Andrews 6 (Mark Ter Morshuizen (2), Sibusiso Mxube, Laurie Apps, Ross Gordon, Jake Coventry); Cambridge 0.

Merrifield College 1 (Trent Pillay); Queens College 0.

Selborne College 3 (Ben van der Merwe, Waeden Plaatjies, Daniel Sirgel); Hudson Park 2: Ayola Rubushe, Helio Ruiters.

Stirling High School 1: Ndalo Manqina. Dale College 1: Sbongisile Nzima.

  • Six year winning streak on the line as Jeppe face Parktown Boys’ High

Six year winning streak on the line as Jeppe face Parktown Boys’ High

    PHOTO: Theo Garrun

Six years – that is the number of years Jeppe Boys’ High has had the upper hand on Parktown Boys on the Astroturf.

This Friday, confidence will come into play when Jeppe Boys High takes the short trip down to Parktown Boys’ High in one of the most grueling derbies in Gauteng.

Meanwhile, a desire to silence their counterparts on home soil will be the agenda of the day for Parktown.

Jeppe, one of the in-form sides this year, will be looking to continue the impressive run that landed them a spot in the Top 10 list of the school’s rankings in the first two terms of the year.

The visitors go into the clash high in confidence. In their last competitive match, they thumped provincial rivals Pretoria Boys High 5-0. That brought an end to a pretty dominant first quarter of the season for the side.

However, the side will be looking to assert themselves even more. With six players coming from the Provincial tournament which took place in Bloemfontein, the Gauteng side couldn’t dream of a better time to play their noisy neighbours than now.

Jaydon Brooker, who won the player of the tournament in Bloemfontein after leading his side to the final, only to lose to Western Province will likely start the match despite his involvement for the SA U18 side against the U21 team. ‘

Jeppe will also be counting on the services of Miguel De Jesus, Neo Chimanyi, and Diahn Alberts-Flynn – all of whom featured for the Southern Gauteng side in Bloemfontein.

The Parktown boys will go into the game to crash the party. After losing their last clash against Jeppe, the side will look to use the game as preparation ahead of their final match against Garsfontein next weekend.

The school hasn’t had its best season on the turf. However, the 2-1 against Affies in May can be used as an alarm to show dangerous the side can be on their day. They will also look to beat their opposition for the first time since 2014.

The clash will kick off at 19:00 on Friday at the Parktown Boys’ Astroturf.

    The teams:

Parktown Boys’ High: Gift Moyo, Ryan Venter, Takudzwa Makudo, Kadin Norval, Mandla Ndhlovu, Robert Bailey, Luthando Gule, Keenan May, Nicholas Townsend, Dominic Stavrou, Ofentse Mokone, Mbulelo Lama, Gomotsegang Molefe, Wade Jacobs, Goitsimang Ramogale, Zenzonhle Ngele.

Jeppe Boys’ High: Joshua Renders, Neo Chimanyi, Brent Johnson, Ryan Harcourt-Baldwin, Chaz Breytenbach, Kyle Jackson, Jaydon Brooker, Christian Steinmann, Miguel De Jesus, Diahn Alberts-Flynn, Ben Benjamin, Ethan Kapanda, Matthew Morudi, Tyrique Joseph, Biopelo Koloti.

  • First weekend back, and it’s a feast of hockey action in the Eastern Cape

First weekend back, and it’s a feast of hockey action in the Eastern Cape

It might only be the first weekend back from the mid-year school holidays, however, hockey fans in the Eastern Cape will be treated to some quality matches.

A total of seven teams, making it 14 teams will take to the field with hopes of kicking off a new term on the high.

Grey High School, coached by Mazan Dos Santos, and managed by Corbyn Dolley will travel from Gqeberha to George where they will face York High in what will be their reunion.

Down in East London, several schools will be battling it out for the City’s bragging rights.

Selborne College, who have been the side to beat all year will take the 20-minute drive to face Hudson Park on Friday night.

The boys in black, and white, were outstanding in the first two terms of the year. They defeated every school in the Town, while also claiming the sculps of rivals Dale College and Queens College.

Their skipper, Ben van der Merwe played exceptionally well to the point where he earned himself a call-up to the South African U18 B team.

As for the home side, Hudson Park, it will be more of a case of not conceding too many goals. The side has been shaky this season, with a fairly young squad.

However, with that said, they’ve managed to beat Stirling High School (2-1) closer to the end of last term whereas before that they defeated Queens College (1-0).

The side will be relying on the likes of Dante May, Helio Ruiters and Vizi Booysen if they are to upset Selborne.

In the other matches, Queens College will travel three hours from Komani to face Merrifield College on Friday.

Whilst in Makhanda, St Andrews will welcome Cambridge High School. Stirling High School will host Dale College.

Gqeberha will also have some fixtures with Alexander Road High School, and Framesby hosting Kingswood College on Friday and Saturday respectively.

    The fixtures:

    Friday, 21 July:

15:30- Alexander Road High School vs Kingswood College
15:45- St Andrews vs Cambridge High School
16:00- Queens College vs Merrifield College
17:15- Hudson Park vs Selborne College
18:00- Stirling High School vs Dale College
19:40- York High School vs Grey High

    Saturday 22 July

    09:00- Framesby vs Kingswood College

  • SA u18 boys to take learnings from the double defeat against an experienced u21 side

Three goals in quick succession by the SA u21 side in the fourth quarter secured a resounding (5-1) victory for Guy Elliott’s side in the second test of the SA Youth challenge against the SA u18’s on Tuesday night in Bloemfontein.

The U21s went into the game on the back of a (2-0) victory against their younger counterparts a day before and were looking to seal the series.

As for the u18s, the series was always going to be a tester for the side, a challenge brought upon to see whether they would sink or swim under pressure.

The team featured a bulk of players from Western Province, who won the u18 SASHOC tournament, while Southern Gauteng, Boland, and KZN were also represented.

The senior side was using the series as part of their preparation for the upcoming World Cup in Malaysia later this year.

The match started at a high pace, with the u21s probing and forcing the juniors to defend early on in the match.

The breakthrough came in the first four minutes for the senior side, when an overhead pass by the ever-present Mustaphaa Cassiem found Hans Neethling in the box, he flicked the ball, and it landed on the stick of Brett Horn, and he calmly scored in the bottom corner.

That goal would be the only score registered in the first chukka, as the senior side failed to break through.

The second chukka produced its share fair of drama.

After a highly contested few minutes, the junior side weathered the storm for the remainder of the quarter before Taine Tanner-Ellis equalized for the side with one minute left in the second chukka.

His joy was quickly shortlived, however, when Christians Kenoe on the other side of the goal doubled his side’s lead. At half-time, the senior team led 2-1.

The third chukka was quiet with no clear-cut opportunities created by either side. The juniors had a chance, however, in the dying seconds through Ellis but his shot went wide.

It was the fourth quarter that killed all hopes for the u18 side. A quarter that saw the seniors show their experience, and skill by killing the game within the seven minutes in.

Goals by Ross Breytenbach, and Damian Knott, and a double by Horn secured the win for the side.

The u18 boys’ hockey side might’ve lost both matches. However, the exposure and ability to play against top players in the country will reap rewards for the National side in the long run.

    Scorers:

    South Africa u21 – 5 (2): Ross Breytenbach, Damian Knott, Brett Horn (x2), Christians Kenoe. South Africa u18 – 1 (1): Taine Tanner-Ellis.

  • Junior Boks eye redemption and podium place against England

Junior Boks eye redemption and podium place against England

The Junior Boks are excited and keen to deliver a performance that will leave a legacy for the 2023 team when they face England at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town in the World Rugby U20 Championship third place playoff on Friday.

For SA U20 captain Paul de Villiers, the match is not only about winning the bronze medal but also for his troops to deliver a performance they can all reflect on in years to come.

“We really want to beat England and finish on a high note – that will leave some sort of legacy for us as a team,” said De Villiers after he took the team through their last training session and traditional captain’s practice.

“We are still going out there to represent our country and people are still paying money to come and see us play, so we cannot disappoint them. We had our ups and downs in the tournament, but if we deliver a good performance on Friday, that is what people will remember. So yes, we are going into this game with the win on our minds.

“There are some mixed emotions now, this being the last time we have trained together and me in charge of the so-called captain’s run, but emotions are not going to take us anywhere tomorrow. We will have to be focussed on what England will bring to us and how we are going to cope with that.”

England have won the most tackle turnovers (18) – more than twice as many as South Africa (7) – and they the only team to have made in excess of 500 passes (520), but they have also conceded 11.5 penalties on average per match and have had four players sent to the sin-bin.

De Villiers was on the field in June 2022 when South Africa defeated England 30-22 in the Six Nations U20 Summer Series in Italy, but tournament history is not in the home side’s favour as England won the last five encounters before that.

No team has played in more third-place playoffs than South Africa (nine) and this is the sixth tournament in a row that they have contested the bronze final. They have won eight and lost once only in those playoffs, with their only defeat at this stage of the tournament coming against Argentina (49-19) in England in 2016.

De Villiers, in his ninth and last appearance for the Junior Boks, said stats will not deter them in their quest to win the match. South Africa’s tackle success rate is the second best in the tournament at 88.7% and they have the fastest average ruck speed in attack (2.90 seconds), but the Junior Bok captain also points to effort.

“At the beginning of the tournament there was room for speculation about the potential of the group and what we potentially could achieve,” he said.

“There is no room for that anymore, time for talking is done and we have one more opportunity to speak through our actions and effort on the field. That is all that really matters.

“The team have shown their fight so far and we did play some really good rugby at times. Sadly also, we had poor moments as well and tomorrow will be about delivering a performance that will be worthy for the Junior Springboks and what it represents. For that we must pitch up tomorrow and stay in the game until the very last minute.”

    Head-to-Head:

Played 11, England won 8, South Africa 3

    Average score: England 27-23

England have won the last five U20 Championship encounters, but South Africa came out on top the last time they met, 30-22 at the U20 Summer Series in Verona, Italy, in June 2022.

  • Western Province do the double over Southerns to claim SASHOC top honours

Western Province do the double over Southerns to claim SASHOC top honours

Western Province scored three goals in the first two chukkas to secure a (3-1) victory against Southern Gauteng in the boys’ final of the SASHOC u18 tournament held in Bloemfontein on Friday.

The Cape side has been outstanding the whole week and finished the pool stages on top unbeaten. They were followed by the Gauteng side in the second spot.

Both sides showcased their best players in the Province this week. For the Gauteng side, their starman, Jaydon Brooker has been phenomenal and scored 10 goals during the week.

As for Province, they’ve had a handful of players raising their hands, however, skipper Michael Cowen and Dean Carrick have been the two knocking on the international selector’s door.

The two sides also faced each other on Wednesday, with Province winning that clash (3-1).

The final started similarly. High-paced, energies high, and with both sides looking to assert themselves early on. It only took nine minutes for Province to open the scoring through Dean Carrick after his side managed to get a penalty corner.

Carrick capitalized on that, adding to his tally so far this week. The youngster would soon double his goalscoring tally two minutes later through a well-worked penalty stroke.

That goal brought the Southern Gauteng side back to life, as they started playing more and trying to catch up. In pursuit of getting back into the game, Brooker’s side became vulnerable at the back and Nathan Msakiwe pounced, scoring his side’s third of the game to take the match away from the Gauteng side.

Try as they may, the Gauteng side couldn’t get back into the match, and despite a goal by the ever-present captain, Jaydon Brooker the deficit proved too much and Province went away with a well-executed (3-1) win.

Province ended the tournament with a 100% win record. Dean Carrick and captain Michael Cowen were the two outstanding players for the side during the week.

Jaydon Brooker finished the week as the top goal scorer with 11 goals, followed by Roan Janse van Rensburg (Southern Free State) with seven goals and Dean Carrick with six.

In other matches, KZA Inland A finished third after beating Boland by one goal to nil. Western Province B will be happy with a fifth-place finish as they sneaked one past the KZN Inland A side.

Amathole will be dissapointed by not meeting their initial goal of finishing in the top five, however a final day win against Southern Free State sees them finish in the top 10.

  • Carrick stars for Western Province in victory over Southern Gauteng

Carrick stars for Western Province in victory over Southern Gauteng

Cape Town and Gauteng schools don’t normally play each other during the annual derby season, however the provincial u18 hockey boys clash in Bloemfontein on Wednesday proved why that should probably be reconsidered.

Western Province stalwart Dean Carrick scored a brace of goals to lead his side to a convincing (3-1) victory against an in-form Southern Gauteng team on day four of the u18 SASHOC boys hockey tournament.

Carrick, with his two goals contributed to the 30 goals that were scored across the seven matches.

Both teams went into the game unbeaten with Western Province having registered wins against Amathole (3-0) and Southern Free State (4-0) on day three.

For the Gauteng side, they beat Northern Gauteng (6-0), and Southern Free State (5-1) in their previous two matches.

The match was deemed as a decider to which side would finish on top of Pool A and have a better chance of making it to the latter rounds of the competition.

In their last meeting in 2022, Western Province, pulled off a performance for the ages, humiliating the Gauteng side (5-0) at Maties.

The occasion was different however, and the game was proving to be more difficult for the Cape side than they would’ve anticipated. The first chukka produced no goals with both sides testing each other’s defence out, with no clear scoring opportunities created.

It’s the second chukka where everything changed, and the Gauteng side lost the match. Province came out firing and applied huge amounts of pressure on their opponent’s defence.

The breakthrough finally came when the Cape side received a penalty for a foul and stepped captain, Dean Carrick who calmy slotted in.

That goal opened the floodgates as a second goal came two minutes after. The side from Cape Town turned the ball over, with Gauteng playing in the danger zone. Josh Opperman quickly pounced on the ball, played a through pass for his skipper who dived and tapped the ball in to extend his side’s lead.

Province put the nail in the coffin when Ethan Lee scored their third goal before the interval.

Northern Gauteng, who have scored 20 goals this week could only manage one and were totally outplayed.

The match was an exhibition of just how heated and competitive a north-south derby between Gauteng and Cape Town schools would be.

In other big matches on day four, Amathole A registered their first win of the week by beating Southern Free State (3-2).

KZN Coastal B closed the day off with a (4-1) win against Eastern Province A, while earlier in the day, Boland played out to a (1-1) draw against Damian Kimfley’s KZN Inland A team.

Western Province ended the pool matches on top with a 100% win record while Southern Gauteng finished on second with 12 points. In Pool B, KZN Coastal A finished above Boland A with Eastern Province and KZN Inland B occupying the last two spots.

     Results | Day 2

KZN Coastal A 5 (1) (Connor McKenzie (2), Tristan Boyall (2), Kyle Thomas); Eastern Province A 1(1) (Matt Kingston).

KZN Coastal B 3 (1) (Mathlhatshe Sebake, Ben Bashford, Sandiswa Yeni); KZN Inland B 2 (0) (Bryn Brokensha, Asande Khumalo).

  • Cowen scores hat-trick as WP dominate second day of SASHOC u18 Nationals

Cowen scores hat-trick as WP dominate second day of SASHOC u18 Nationals

The Western Province u18 A side scored five goals in the first two chukkers against their second-string side which saw them register an emphatic 7-1 win on day of the u18 SASHOC National event in Bloemfontein on Monday.

Coming into the tournament as one of the sides to watch, the team totally dominated their Provincial counterparts, clearly showing the difference between an A and second-best team.

The side, coached by the experienced Bryce West opened the scoring as early as the second minute, when Ethan Lee found himself in a good position, and scored a well-worked field goal to kick things off for his side.

The goals would follow in quick succession after the opener.
