  • “Technique Over Tactics”, says Lunga Nobela, ‘Downs Academy coach

In an era where technology has enabled coaches to employ a more analytical approach, leading them to try out different tactics and adding nuances to the game, the basics cannot be forgotten. But the access to information has proved to be, especially at the professional level, integral to the success of teams.

Others draw their inspiration from the top clubs and coaches, so it is natural that academy and school coaches strive to take a leaf out of the leading teams’ and coaches’ playbooks.

Sometimes, the successes this leads to can also undermine the progress of young players, who get caught up in the results, but left behind in terms of their development.

Football at the academy and school level is, after all, about equipping young players with the basics of the game, with technique featuring as a crucial aspect of their development.

Lunga Nobela, the head coach of the Mamelodi Sundowns‘ u13 boys’ squad, knows which approach he favours. He is adamant that the success of the Sundowns’ academy is due to its focus on technique over tactics.

“What we focus on the most is the technique. The moment players are good technically, then we believe that they can play anywhere,” Nobela told SuperSport Schools during the third episode of the Football on 216 show.

“We don’t think about tactics a lot, because any coach has his own tactics, but the moment you work on your technique, fine-tune it, and get everything right in your technique, then it’s easy for you to feature any tactic. We believe the technique is able to influence the tactic.

“If you look closely, you will see that Sundowns plays a possession-based game and for you to be able to keep the ball you have to be good technically. Right from the goalkeeper to the forwards, you have to be good technically to fit our style of play,” he explained.

Nobela’s side recently was on the wrong end of a humbling 2-3 defeat at the hands of the mighty Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs.

That was, however, the only loss suffered by Sundowns’ during the 13th round of fixtures of the Gauteng Development League when the clubs’ u13s, u15s, u17s and u19s locked horns at Clapham High School on the weekend.

Despite the loss, Nobela remains positive, citing the improvement that he witnessed in his group of players during an intense clash.

“It was one of the biggest games that we’ve played in. It was very intense. I was saying to my colleagues that we can play these kinds of games week-in and week-out because that’s how the boys are going to develop,” he said.

“Whenever the games are intense, it also challenges us to sit down and analyse the next opponents, because you know you will find the same intensity from your next opponents. To be honest, the boys did very well.

“Yes, we created opportunities, and we did not convert. In football, it’s like that. If you don’t take the opportunities you create, then chances are you will lose the game. That’s what we saw. Chiefs created chances and used their chances. But performance-wise it was a good game.

“That game also gives us homework. We now have to go back, sit down and think about the next game to see how we are going to improve from here.

“Each and every game, the boys are improving and that’s what we want to see from them. It’s not only about getting results but also about getting improvements from the boys.”

Up next, Sundowns travels to the Greek Sporting Club to take on Joburg City on Saturday, 25 May.

The South African u15 national boys’ and girls’ teams arrived in Zanzibar on Monday morning, ahead of their participation in the CAF African Schools Championships for a third year in succession.

The Schools Championships will be held from 21-24 May, and the South African sides, after winning the COSAFA title in Zimbabwe in December 2023, have their sights set on lifting the trophies.

Head coach of the girls’ national team, Ntombifuthi Khumalo, expressed her excitement at representing the country for a third consecutive time.

“I believe we have a world class group of players who can dominate youth football on the continent,” she said. “We have had a great week of training and I believe that we will showcase the quality of football we have in South Africa.

“This group is very special, and they keep getting better every day, so we are looking forward to competing in the 2024 CAF African Schools Championships.

“We believe that we can win the tournament and also build a squad that will represent us in the next group of the u17 women’s national team.”

  • Top-of-the-table GDL clash pits Sundowns versus Chiefs

“We want to dominate,” were the three words that stood out when SuperSport Schools Plus sat down with Kaizer Chiefs‘ under-19 coach David Mathebula last season as he looked ahead to a crucial Gauteng Development League fixture.

When he aired these words, it was too late for his team to knock down the then log-leaders, Highlands Park, as the Balfour Park-based unit had already run away with the league. There was no catching them.

Twelve weeks into the 2024 season, Mathebula’s words have aged like fine wine as they sit second, five points behind coach Surprise Moriri‘s star-studded Mamelodi Sundowns, on the log. They’re one place behind ‘Downs, but they also have a game in hand.

    Head-to-Head Record

    Chiefs 3-1 Sundowns (22 September 2023)
    Chiefs 2-2 Sundowns (13 May 2023)
    Chiefs 1-1 Sundowns (18 June 2022)
    Chiefs 3-1 Sundowns (17 April 2021)

Mamelodi Sundowns have been a dominant force in African football at large during the past decade. However, Chiefs have been a thorn in their side over the past three years, and they boast an unbeaten record against Sundowns during  that time.

    Top Five Log Standings

Teams Nr of Maches Wins Draws Losses Points
    Mamelodi Sundowns 12 11 1 0 34
    Kaizer Chiefs 11 9 2 0 29
    TS Galaxy 12 6 3 3 21
    Highlands Park 10 6 3 1 21
    SuperSport United 10 6 1 3 19

That is all in the past, though, ahead of the big clash at Clapham High on Sunday afternoon.

Chiefs’ versatile Mpho Khethang (three goals this season) is a dangerman, and he will be given licence to take the attack to Sundowns this weekend.

Moriri, meanwhile, will aim to unleash his equally impressive goal-scoring machine, Kamva Moni (three goals this season), as the log leaders aim to widen the gap at the top of the standings.

  • Three SuperSport United players to watch against TS Galaxy | Gauteng Development League

Three SuperSport United players to watch against TS Galaxy | Gauteng Development League

George Lea Park, in Sandton, is set to host a highly anticipated Gauteng Development League showdown between TS Galaxy and SuperSport United on Sunday.

Playing away from home, SuperSport United heads into the fixture on the back foot. However, they’re well capable of walking away from the contest with maximum points.

SuperSport Schools’ Ongama Gcwabe looks at three players who could play a decisive role for the visitors.

    Michael Alagiozoglou (Forward)
When shortlisting the league’s most impressive forwards, particularly in the under-19 division, it is hard to look past Michael Alagiozoglou.

He has a knack for taking up positions where his midfielders can locate him in attack, which goes a long way towards making him a successful striker.

The 17-year-old has all the traits a regular goal scorer needs in his repertoire, including ball control, composure, big match temperament and deadly finishing abilities.

This season, he has three goals to his name thus far, which has helped SuperSport United to sixth position on the log, with two games in hand.

TS Galaxy has been a force to be reckoned with this season but, if there’s a player who could halt their momentum, it is United’s Alagiozoglou.

    Tumelo Machete (Forward)
Alongside Alagiozoglou, SuperSport features the young and dazzling Tumelo Machete. Last season, he was already a regular in the under-19 division, and that experience has been on show in his 2024 performances, which have demonstrated his acute reading of the game.

He combines well in attack with Alagiozoglou while keeping in sync with the midfield and the back four, a trait that is rare to find in forwards.

In front of goal, Machete is a good finisher, and he has struck twice for SuperSport in the league. He delivers a massive work rate and is often the one behind the creation of goal-scoring opportunities for the likes of Alagiozoglou.

On average, TS Galaxy concede only one goal per game, but that number could be nudged up a touch with the likes of Machete challenging their defence.

    Kgoleng Ratisani
 (Goalkeeper)
Kgoleng Ratisani‘s performances between the sticks have stood out this season, and they’ve already brought him two clean sheets from six appearances.

His excellence has played a key role in SuperSport United’s successful start to the season.

TS Galaxy lies third on the league table, with over 20 goals to their name, but they will have to work hard and finish well to get past the reliable Ratisani.

  • Bottom three beaten again in Gauteng Development League

Heading into round nine of the Gauteng Development League, SuperSport Schools Plus highlighted the difficulties of the three teams – Wits Junior, Panorama FC and NWU Vaal Academy – at the bottom of the league standings. It was, unfortunately for them, more of the same on Saturday as they all suffered losses.

Wits went down to Highlands Park, Panorama was beaten by Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), and NWU Vaal came up short against Rosina Sedibane Modiba.

There were, however, noticeable improvements made by all three of the strugglers during their round nine fixtures. They all attacked with more intensity, displayed better discipline in their defensive strategies, and appeared to have taken steps towards closing the gap between themselves and the top teams in the league.

Of the three teams, Panorama FC looked the most improved. The side from the western region of Johannesburg went into their fixture against RESA having scored only four goals in the league. On Saturday, during a defeat at President Park, they doubled that figure, eventually falling one goal shy of a decent RESA side, in going down 4-5.

More than anything, Panorama’s downfall stemmed from their inability to contain and close off the RESA forwards, who exposed Panorama’s lack of composure under pressure.

In the first half, Panorama conceded two penalties, which were converted by Nkululeko Sekese and Kabelo Phuthiyagae respectively. Phuthiyagae, then, made it a double in the opening stanza, courtesy of an assist from Katleho Majoe.

In the second half, Tshegofatso Rampitsang and Thembinkosi Mlangeni also got onto the score sheet to help RESA seal a crucial victory at home.

At Marks Park, in Johannesburg, Wits Junior slipped to a 1-2 defeat to Highlands Park, while NWU Vaal lost 0-2 to Rosina Sedibane Modiba.

In other results, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs maintained the top two spots on the log, with 3-1 and 3-2 victories over School of Excellence and SuperSport United respectively.

Jomo Cosmos pulled off the biggest upset of the weekend, beating TS Galaxy 2-0, while Sevens Academy won by the same scoreline against Kathorus Hyper Academy.

Randburg AFC and East Rand Athletic Club played to a heated 1-1 draw at the Tsakane Stadium, while Tuks and Joburg City walked away with one point each after a goalless draw in Pretoria.

  • Checking in on the GDL’s bottom three ahead of match week nine

For some teams, the young Gauteng Development League season has been a series of steep learning curves. Certainly, the bottom three – Panorama FC, Wits Junior and NWU Vaal – have been on the receiving end of some harsh lessons over the course of the first eight rounds.

SuperSport Schools PlusOngama Gcwabe looks at the state of affairs within the league’s three strugglers, who sport only one win between them after a combined 19 games, ahead of the weekend’s ninth round of fixtures.

    PANORAMA FC

The 2024 season has been a constant struggle for the Roodepoort-based club. They are currently in 18th place in the standings, at the very bottom of the league, and have failed to register a single victory in their six matches thus far.

When a team concedes almost three goals per game, which is roughly what Panorama FC has conceded this season, the reason why they occupy the bottom rung of the ladder is clear.

Perhaps what is more disappointing is how much their poor start to the season mirrors last season’s slow start, which featured only one victory in their first six outings.

The club from the west side of Johannesburg will need to pick themselves up ahead of round nine and produce far better form if they want to find themselves anywhere near the tenth position they secured at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

On Saturday, they travel to President Park to go toe-to-toe with Remember Elite Sports Academy FC.

    WITS JUNIOR

It is difficult to understand how a club that is so successful at the professional level could struggle to the extent that the Wits Junior under-19 team has struggled over the past two seasons. In their 2023 campaign, Wits Junior finished at the very bottom of the log with a staggering 27 losses in 34 league fixtures.

The Marks Park-based unit appears to be on a similar downward trend this season and they, too, are winless after eight rounds of fixtures. They have lost five matches, drawn three, and have conceded 15 goals, which has left them in 17th place in the standings.

They host the defending champions, Highlands Park, at Marks Park on Saturday for their ninth league match.

    NWU VAAL

The league’s newbies have had a number of challenges to negotiate this season, and most of them have, disappointingly, been outside the field of play. One of the main issues arose when the club attempted a name change, which led to an extended delay to their opening fixtures.

As a result, they occupy 16th place on the log after five fixtures, with one victory, one drawn game, and three losses.

They will be chasing a second victory of the season on Saturday when they travel to the Rosina Sedibane Media Sports Complex for their sixth league fixture of the season.

“As a coach, you will be proud,” says Kearsney College after three players don KZN Baketball under-15 clours

Three of the Kearsney College under-15 boys – Itumelang Khubeka, Ayanda Khanye and Lubanzi Mseleku – have donned the KwaZulu-Natal Basketball colours in the recently concluded national competition.

The trio played an integral part in the KZN side reaching the final of the competition despite falling short against a skillful Gauteng outfit.

Kearsney College under-15 coach, Mfanafuthi Gwava, told SuperSport Schools Plus that the three youngsters are dedicated and deserving of their provincial call-ups.

“They are always at the courts,” said Gwava. “These boys are dedicated and want to play the right way.”

For any school coach, playing a part in players’ development and seeing them being rewarded for their dedication and effort is a proud moment.

It is not different in Gwava’s case who is not only proud of this new crop of talent but also the impact of their basketball programmes at Kearsney College.

“As a coach, you will be proud when you see players being rewarded for their hard work,” Gwava reiterated. “These three boys have shown that our program is the best.” he added.

Mseleku, who plays as a power forward, and Khanye who plays as a small forward have both been roped into the national under-15 squad.

  • Sundowns stun SuperSport in Tshwane Derby | Match Week Eight

Kaizer Chiefs enjoyed a good weekend in the Gauteng Development League, with their u19 team beating Tuks 5-2.
Kaizer Chiefs enjoyed a good weekend in the Gauteng Development League, with their u19 team beating Tuks 5-2.

Just when many believed that SuperSport United had announced themselves as real title contenders this season, following a stunning clean sweep of Panorama FC last weekend, Mamelodi Sundowns inflicted a humbling 3-1 defeat on the sky blues of Tshwane at Clapham High School on Sunday.

Two of the league’s most exciting forwards, Bohlale Ngwato and Michael Alagiozulu, had already made a big impression in the SuperSport United colours, prompting many to predict bright things for the club in this season’s Gauteng Development League.

However, their toughest challenge presented itself on Sunday, with United facing a red-hot Sundowns side away from home.

Despite the tough task that awaited them, many still picked SuperSport to pull off one of the upsets of the season. Then, when the United u13 team beat Sundowns 2-1, for a first ever win over the Brazilians, that belief was bolstered.

However, coach Surprise Moriri‘s Sundowns’ u19 side showed up and showed off once again, recording a 3-1 win to maintain their unbeaten run in the league thus far.

In other results, Kaizer Chiefs was also one of the winners, convincingly beating Tuks 5-2 at the Naturena Village, while the defending champions, Highlands Park, fresh off a draw against Chiefs, which was preceded by a defeat against Sundowns, got back to winning ways at the Greek Sporting Club, where they beat Joburg City 2-1.

Jomo Cosmos and Randburg AFC shared 1-1 draws with Wits Junior and Rosina Sedibane Modiba respectively.

East Rand Athletic Club pulled off a shock when they lowered the colours of the Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), taking a 2-1 win, while NWU Vaal cruised to a 3-0 win over Sevens Academy to infuse some momentum into their campaign.

  • Three Performances of The Week | Gauteng Development League

Three Performances of The Week | Gauteng Development League

The past weekend presented teams competing in the Gauteng Development League with a demanding challenge as most of them faced back-to-back fixtures on Saturday and Sunday.

However, in the face of the steepest tests, the top contenders put their hands up and made themselves known through their teamwork and a never-say-die spirit.

Ongama Gcwabe and SuperSport Schools Plus picked Three Top Performances from the back-to-back matchdays six and seven.

    Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs faced one of the tougher schedules, which included the “The Lions of the North“, Highlands Park, who were ready to pounce in their first fixture of the weekend.

In a hard-fought contest, the Soweto giants and Highlands Park drew 1-1, meaning the Amakhosi did not win both of their weekend fixtures, unlike the other teams on this list.

Therefore, more context is needed to explain why Chiefs find themselves selected as one of the top three performers.

They did not face any old Highlands Park side. They faced one that was severely wounded, having been humbled 0-2 by Mamelodi Sundowns a week earlier, a side which had managed only one league victory thus far this season.

Stung, the Balfour Park-based unit went into the Chiefs game itching to make a statement and desperate to display form worthy of the defending champions.

They took the fight to Chiefs, giving it their all, but it wasn’t enough as the sides shared the spoils.

The Soweto giants followed up their draw with a 4-1 win over Kathorus Hyper Academy at Naturena on Sunday, to complete a successful weekend on a winning note.

    Mamelodi Sundowns

When the bar has been set high, it can sometimes be difficult to maintain that standard, and the standard setters from the start of the 2024 Gauteng Development League have been Mamelodi Sundowns. They entered the weekend’s fixtures with an unbeaten record, intent on preserving it.

Coach Surprise Moriri‘s charges faced Tuks on Saturday and Jomo Cosmos on Sunday.

First up, they won 3-1 at Tuks, ostensibly in the tougher of their two games. However, Cosmos put up a tremendous fight on Sunday against a Sundowns’ side that appeared tired.

‘Downs dug deep, however, and eventually found a goal to secure maximum points with a 1-0 victory, which gave them back-to-back wins.

    SuperSport United

    SuperSport United
faced serious challenges from the in-form Panorama FC and the School of Excellence on Saturday and Sunday respectively. One thing in their favour, however, was that both matches were played in their own backyard, at Eskom Megawatt Park, in Pretoria.

Not many teams enjoyed home ground advantage in both of their weekend’s games, but SuperSport United did and they made that advantage count.

On Saturday, they put six goals past Panorama, while the visitors scored twice, with Nkosinathi Mbuyane, Samuel Ndongeni, Tyrese Davids, Michael Alagiozolou, Tshiamo Selemela, and Bohlale Ngwato netting for the winners.

On Sunday, a solitary goal from Tlotliso Makgai saw SuperSport United to a 1-0 victory over the School of Excellence, thus boosting the home team’s tally by six points from the two games.

  • Match Day Six Preview | Gauteng Development League

Mamelodi Sundowns has been a dominant force in the Gauteng Development League in 2024 and their dominance is vividly displayed in the standings, where they are top of the log and unbeaten through the first five rounds of the competition.

Moreover, their ladies’ team, which competes in the Gauteng Women’s Development League, is in peak form, with their results echoing the same lofty standards that have been set from the under-13 division up to the Premier Soccer League team, which is through to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

Surprise Moriri, the under-19 side’s coach, told SuperSport Schools Plus the secret behind their success is a culture of excellence that has been established at the club.

Morris said that the club owner and current president, Patrice Motsepe, is the catalyst behind those high standards.

“It’s the culture that has been created at Sundowns,” said Moriri. “When the president took over, he said he wanted to make this team the best team in Africa. And everyone can see that is where the club is headed.

“We don’t celebrate coming second. Even if you come second in the league or you lose a game, you feel it.

“For us, as academy coaches, and everyone who is involved with the ladies’ team, we all know that at Sundowns we expect only the best.  Even the ground curator here knows that only the highest of standards is expected. Whoever is in a leadership position knows that success is non-negotiable,” he added.

Moriri, a former Sundowns’ captain, understands the danger of instilling a “win-at-all-costs” mentality. The 44-year-old said that the club strikes a perfect balance between winning games of football and prioritising the development of players, which is their main objective as academy coaches.

“While we are still trying to instil a winning mentality, there must be a balance in terms of developing the players and winning. It is a very thin line. You might cross that line, focus only on winning, but you will find out that when the players get to the next level they are still way behind in terms of the understanding of the game,” he continued.

“That is my driving force as an academy coach, to ensure that when these boys go up a level, they are ready. We take pride in terms of that as academy coaches, especially if you are working for Sundowns, because players cannot leave Sundowns and be in a situation where they are still learning. That is the standard that Sundowns has set in the country and the continent at large.”

After a hard-earned victory over the defending champions, Highlands Park, this past weekend, Sundowns take on an even steeper challenge as they brace for back-to-back fixtures this weekend. They face Tuks on Saturday, before a visit to Jomo Cosmos on Sunday.

Moriri said that despite the tough opposition that awaits, Sundowns will stick to their guns and focus on themselves as a team instead of dwelling on their opponents.

“I’ve watched Tuks quite a bit. They are a good and well-coached team, but we know what to expect from them,” said Moriri.

“But when we do our analysis, it’s about us and less about the opponents because, if you focus too much on the opponents, you will most likely lose yourself.

“Even when we do our corrections coming from the game against Highlands Park, I know that everyone will think we played well because we won 2-0, but I know that we lost too many balls and played too many long balls. That’s what we are fixing this week, going into the Tuks and Jomo Cosmos games.

“What I did like, though, was the mobility of our players. The circulation of the ball and the interchanging of possession was a lot quicker.

“It’s just that our decision-making was not spot-on in the last third. We created enough opportunities to score more than two goals. So, that’s what we’re working on.”
