  • St Stithians wins derby, St John’s romps to a 54-point victory

Team effort from St Stithians College PHOTO: Debbi Adcock

St Stithians made the most of their Old Boys’ Day, stunning their rivals, St Alban’s College, with a 26-16 win on Saturday.

After a superb start, Saints made sure they made it count with a superb team effort.

Rewatch all the action on SuperSport Schools

Cullen Bradford opened the day with the first points after receiving a ball out wide, with a huge space in front of him, and the speedy fullback sprinted towards the corner pocket to score.

Saints’ flyhalf Chris Anderson, then, executed a classic dummy pass, deceiving the opposition before bursting through a gap to score a second try for the home side, which he followed up with an easy conversion from right in front of the poles.

Bradford was in the mix again, as the number 15, with an electrifying counterattack from inside the home team’s half, tore through the defence with blistering pace to score beneath the uprights

St Alban’s bounced back in the second half, but the damage had been done in the first half. Flanker Thabiso Mbembele and substitute Everett Gosling each scored for the Hoops, but it was not enough to help the visitors get over the line.

Over the last two weeks, St Alban’s has been struck by numerous injuries, which have forced six players, all in matric, to the sidelines. Coach Ofentse Moeng, bravely, viewed the setbacks optimistically, describing them as “a good opportunity to blood a few younger players for next year.”

On Burger Field, St John’s started their match off slowly as St Benedict’s put up a fight in the first half of the match, conceding only 14 points. The visitors defended well, led by some big hits from their captain Jason Cutler.

Fullback Oliver Tait and Joshua Shannon scored for the home team, with the latter powering over the try line and grounding the ball with authority for a much-needed crash-ball try. Bryson Walker had no problems adding the extras with the boot,

In the second half, however, the floodgates opened as St John’s piled on the pressure and scored 40 points in what became a one-sided affair.

Six different players crossed for tries, with Tait collecting a second five-pointer, while scrumhalf Tom Kruger scored two of his own tries and narrowly missed out on a hattrick.

St Benedict’s will be disappointed with the end result as their 2024 season continues to limp along. Next weekend, they host St David’s Marist Inanda on their Old Boys’ Weekend, hoping for a different outcome.

Perhaps a reshuffle in positions or a change in tactics might be an option for Bennies, given how their season has gone so far. Maybe a slight gamble could pay off.

St David’s, meanwhile, will head into next weekend’s fixture with plenty of confidence after they outplayed the visiting Cornwall Hill College 41-9.

The first half of the game progressed slowly, and the visitors led at half-time by three points, thanks to their flyhalf Matthew Fox, who successfully slotted three penalty kicks.

The second half was a different story altogether, with the home team finding their rhythm and amassing 35 more points as they effectively turned opportunities into tries.

With strength and determination, the host’s no. 8 Jack Brady bulldozed through tackles on his way to scoring two tries, and their tenacious scrumhalf Diego Ferreira was, again, in fine form with the boot, converting all of his kicks.

Saints look to jump through Hoops, St John’s hosts St Benedict’s

St Stithians College hosts their annual Old Boys’ Day on Saturday, with a 1st XV showdown against St Alban’s College kicking off at 12:30 on the prestigious Baytop Field.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools

The Hoops will be raring to go after overrunning St Benedict’s College 47-7 last weekend at home.

St Stithians boast an experienced front row, with both of their props, Keabetswe Mapukana and Braeden Lightfoot, veterans from last year’s meeting of the school’s first teams. As always, the battle up front will be a crucial component of the match.

Saints did not play last weekend due to a cancellation with Northcliff High School, and they head into the contest off the back of three hard-fought losses against St Charles College (20-28), St David’s Marist Inanda (27-28) and Parktown Boys’ High (15-23).

St Alban’s will be without lock Tim Garnett, who sustained a serious injury last weekend in their match against St Benedict’s College and will turn to Jandré Botha to make an impact in Garnett’s absence.

Last weekend, St John’s College was left feeling blue after a 24-36 defeat at Pretoria Boys High School. Despite losing, St John’s played some good rugby during the match, especially in the first half, and they led up until the break. They delivered some big hits before halftime but were less effective in the second stanza.

They have an opportunity to return to winning ways when they take on St Benedict’s College at 12:15 on Burger Field, and the home side will be heavy favourites to win.

Lock Dom Kamangu steps into the captain’s role with the side’s regular captain and 8th-man, Kyle Watson, missing due to an injury which he suffered against Boys High. It’s a big loss for the Blues, but Kamangu will relish the opportunity to skipper the side in his teammate’s absence.

St Benedict’s continues a long season, desperate to notch up a win. St Alban’s, last weekend, was able to punch holes in their defensive setup, but it has been Bennies’ dearth of points on the offensive end of matters which has held back the side.

In their last five matches, they have totalled only 32 points, barely above six per game. The last time they made it into double figures, it was in a losing cause against Graeme College at the St John’s Easter Rugby Festival, with the Eastern Cape side running away to a 50-12 victory. That is also, in fact, the only time they’ve reached double figures in 2024. It has been a very tough season.

Still, Bennies will be keen to finish off the second term on a high. That could mean a victory or scoring the most points they have this season. They’ll need to find some attacking continuity, and if anyone is likely to give them that it is their inside centre Braeden Le Roux.

Last year, when the schools met, St John’s won 34-22. Bryson Walker, who plays at right-wing on Saturday, enjoyed a fine outing on that occasion, kicking well to help the Blues to victory. He’ll handle the kicking duties once again.

St David’s Marist Inanda takes on Cornwall Hill College. It should be a close match.

In their most recent outing, St David’s fell to a resurgent Parktown Boys’ High, going down 19-24, while Cornwall Hill beat St Andrew’s School 8-3 in Bloemfontein. The Pretoria school could find their challenge undermined, however, by the absence of a number of their players, who are out of action due to injury and illness.

Saint David’s scrumhalf Diego Ferreira bears watching as a player likely to impact the outcome. He is quick on his feet and usually an accurate goal kicker.

Pretoria Boys High School clawed their way back into the game, after trailing at the break, to claim a 36-24 win over St John’s College on Brooks Field on Saturday.

After being forced onto the back foot in the first half, the home side dialled up the pressure, threw in some big hits, and scored 26 points in the second stanza.

Rewatch all the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com)

Boys High scored first when their hooker Thapelo Mphela crashed through the defensive line to start the scoreboard ticking.

However, the Blues‘ number eight, Kyle Watson, was in the thick of the action, twice crossing for tries to give the visitors the edge in the first half.

His first five-pointer came from a lineout variation, which opened up the left flank of the field, resulting in Watson taking the Boys High defence by surprise. Hats off to the coaching staff for coming up with the manoeuvre. The opposition was caught completely unawares.

With five minutes left of play in the first half, Watson, the Blues’ skipper, was stretchered off after he sustained a serious leg injury.

At the halfway mark, St John’s College was in front, leading 14-10. They looked well poised to build upon that advantage, but the Candies had other ideas and came back strongly, scoring three minutes into the second half.

A strong driving maul, which has been a feature of Boys High’s play this season, resulted in flank Jeffrey Singo going over for a try. Much like he did against Maritzburg College, he timed his break off the maul perfectly to exploit a gap in the defence.

Then, speedster Jack Tsanwani made a sniping run down the field to score an excellent try, which left St John’s with a mountain to climb.

An overlap in the final phase of the match saw the Johannesburg school reduce the deficit to 12 points, with wing Jacob Smith dotting down the consolation try with ease.

With a win in the bag, Boys High will head into the break with a confidence boost, but some very tough fixtures await them later in the season, including clashes with KES, Maritzburg College, and Affies.

Also in Pretoria, St Alban’s College stormed to a convincing 42-7 victory over St Benedict’s College to avenge the two losses they suffered at the hands of the side from Bedfordview in 2023.

St Alban’s struck first with a cleverly executed try from JJ Steenkamp, who sliced through the Bennies’ defence with ease and grace. Later, the talented flyhalf added a second try.

Against the run of play, Bennies scored when their number eight Jason Cutler executed a textbook pick-and-go before surging over the try line. Braeden Le Roux was successful with his conversion attempt.

The game’s pace never waned, with both sides defending resolutely and attacking with creativity, but the hosts held the upper hand, regularly tacking on points to increase pressure on the visitors.

Hoops’ scrumhalf Joshua Verster had a fantastic day with the boot, successfully converting all but one of the seven tries St Alban’s scored. He also delivered excellent service throughout the contest, quickly recycling the ball to help his team maintain its attacking momentum.

In the dying minutes of the match, another freak injury occurred. St Alban’s College lock Tim Garnett broke a leg after colliding with one of his fellow teammates, and he will have to undergo surgery.

The St Benedict’s coaching staff, who were closest to the incident, jumped in immediately to assist the player and were commended by the St Alban’s parents for their swift response.

Bennies will be scratching their heads after another disappointing result. Their forthcoming schedule includes a return to St Alban’s for the u18 Independent Schools Rugby Festival (ISRF) at the end of June.

Parktown, meanwhile, continued their turnaround with a 24-19 victory over St David’s Marist Inanda, away on La Valla Field.

With five minutes remaining in the contest, the visitors stole a win from the hosts. Ben Nettleton scored the winning try, which was converted by flyhalf Kelvin Kotey, to give Parktown the victory.

With the midyear exams just around the corner, the last few fixtures are set to be played before learners gear up for some academics, while others prepare for the various national youth weeks taking place around the country in the school holidays.

One match that, unfortunately, won’t be played is that between St Stithians College and Northcliff High School after a miscommunication on a fixture date, which has resulted in the cancellation of the game.

St Benedict’s will be hoping to replicate their success of 2023, when they beat St Alban’s College twice, both home and away. The scores last year were 25-20 and 17-14, with the Bedfordview boys stunning St Alban’s by converting a match winning penalty in the final minutes of the second encounter.

The Hoops, however, are firm favourites heading into the match, which kicks off at 12:30. Bennies have struggled mightily this season and have lost eight out of nine matches.

At least, as the underdogs, St Benedict’s won’t feel too much pressure ahead of the tie.

Both teams include players who featured in last year’s games. Perhaps those Bennies’ players can dig deep and use memories of those hard-fought wins to fuel and inspire the rest of their side.

Skipper Jason Cutler, who tasted victory against St Alban’s last year, has made a full recovery from his injuries earlier in the season, and he will lead the side from the front.

JJ Steenkamp and Joshua Verster, the St Alban’s halfbacks, will aim to make early inroads on their opposition, who have found it difficult to mount comebacks this season once a bit of scoreboard pressure has been applied.

Meanwhile, down the road, Pretoria Boys High School hosts St John’s College. A close encounter is expected on Brooks Field. Kick-off is at 12:15.

Catch all the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Boys High has experienced an indifferent run of form recently, and has been handed several losses, including, most recently, a 27-34 defeat against Michaelhouse at Balgowan.

Pacy fullback Tumisho Motswi moves into the scrumhalf position, where he replaces nuggetty Cole Williams, who has worn the number nine jersey for most of the season.

The Blues are fresh off the back of a 30-67 loss against Jeppe High School for Boys last weekend. However, leading up to the difficult fixture against one of the top performing sides this year, the team had cruised to big victories over Parktown Boys’ High School (51-7) and St Andrew’s School (80-5).

Players to look out for include their hooker and captain Kyle Watson, as well as lock Dominique Kamangu.

Last year, the Candies walked away with the win when they travelled to Johannesburg, securing a comfortable 39-5 victory.

In Johannesburg, Parktown Boys’ High will come face to face with fiery St David’s Marist Inanda, away at La Valla Field, with kick-off taking place at 12:30.

St David’s narrowly beat St Stithians College last weekend, winning that fixture by one point, which has provided the team with a welcome morale boost ahead of the Independent Schools Rugby Festival (ISRF), which takes place at St Alban’s College, from 29 June to 3 July.

Throughout the season, Luca Cabion and Teegen Rossini have swapped the all-important number ten and fifteen jerseys for St David’s, and this weekend it’s Cabion at flyhalf.

Parktown has managed to turn around their fortunes by winning their past three matches, which included a 29-5 victory over St Benedict’s last weekend.

Fullback Calestin Fulkers shone, scoring two tries, and he will be eager to build on that form.

Wit Bulle score 34 points in the second half to defeat Red Army

NewsG Affies vs KES schools rugby
    PHOTO: William Brown

After a fairly slow start, Affies stepped up a gear in the second half of their game against King Edward VII (KES) on Saturday, producing a clinical display, to claim a 52-26 victory in Johannesburg.

KES scored the first try of the day, within the first five minutes of play, when their big 8th-man and captain Kebotile Maake excellently charging down an attempted clearance kick from the boot of Reuben Pienaar. He gathered the ball to score with ease and gave the hosts an early advantage.

Affies, though, have shown themselves to be a force to be reckoned with throughout the 2024 season, and while KES held their own in the first 20 minutes, they were hard pressed to keep with a barrage of attacking plays from the Wit Bulle.

The side from Pretoria struck back late in the opening stanza, scoring two tries in quick succession, through scrumhalf Zirk Meyer and wing Eagan Roux, which helped the visitors edge ahead at the break. At halftime only four points separated the sides, with Affies 18-14 to the good.

In the second half, however, they came out all guns’ blazing, pushing deep into KES territory, while dominating the battle for possession. By increasing the pace of the game, Affies were able to showcase their attacking abilities, which led to a 34-point boost on the scoreboard.

The Wit Bulle impressed with their ball handling. There was no better example than when Eagan Roux scored his second, following a brilliant offload from fullback Ruben Groenewald, after the ball had been moved gracefully down the backline.

Affies favored the left-hand side of the field, probing away there until it brought them a try from Nico Grobler, which echoed Roux’s earlier effort.

KES added a further 12 points in the second half, with their prolific wing Haniel Monkoti finishing the day with another hat-trick. He’s been a regular on the score sheet, week in and week out, and will surely be in the running for a Craven Week place.

Fly half Vusi Moyo converted one out of his two opportunities in the second half but was a little out of his groove. However, a fine penalty in the first half, from a difficult angle, from in front of the Affies’ supporters, highlighted his ability.

His opposite number, Reuben Pienaar has shown up well against KES in the past and he was on song once more against the Red Army, tallying 22 points, which included four conversions, three penalties and a try. He also orchestrated the Affies’ backline with precision and directed play well with crisp passes and strategic kicks.

The mid-year exams are approaching, but Affies faces Die Hoërskool Menlopark next weekend and they will be eager to build on the momentum they’ve accrued in an impressive season. They’ve lost only three times, to the top three teams in the country – Paul Roos Gimnasium, Grey College and Paarl Gimnasium – by a combined total of just 10 points.

KES will put their rugby campaign on hold until 13 July, when they face Pretoria Boys High for a second time this season. They won the first meeting, in Pretoria, 24-14.

  • Wit Bulle go head-to-head with spirited Red Army

Affies travel from Pretoria to Houghton, Johannesburg, to take on King Edward VII in a highly anticipated match between two powerhouses on Saturday.

Last weekend, KES drew with Westville Boys’ High School in a thriller of a match which saw the school from KwaZulu-Natal snatch a draw with an excellent length of the field try in the final few minutes of the match.

Affies, meanwhile, faced up to Grey College, with the side from Bloemfontein winning by the slimmest of margins, taking the game 31-27. So far this season, the Wit Bulle have also suffered only two other narrow losses, going down 25-30 to Paul Roos Gimnasium and 19-20 to Paarl Gimnasium.

The matchup of the day will be the competition between the two fly halves. Both Vusi Moyo (KES) and Reuben Pienaar (Affies ) played in last year’s fixture, which Affies comfortably won 43-20 in Pretoria.

Pienaar enjoyed the better day on that occasion. There has never been a doubt about Moyo’s talent, but he struggled last year against the Witbulle. He has since gone back to the drawing board. His place kicking has shown marked improvement, which has added yet another edge to an already dangerous skillset.

Both teams play an aggressive and running style of rugby, but the Affies’ pack has been garnering praise this season, too, for its dominance. KES will need to blunt the Wit Bulle up front, if they are to be in with a shot at victory.

KES, unfortunately, will be without their starting hooker and South African Schools’ player Esethu Mnebelele. He was heavily bandaged for the Red Army‘s clash with Westville last week, but still came away with a hattrick of tries. His absence is a big loss for the hosts, not only because he is a skillful player, but also because he is a strong leader, who would have relished taking on one of the top packs in the country.

With the fixture taking place in Johannesburg, and with excellent home support, KES might be able to pull off an upset. Before their draw last week, they had recorded six wins on the trot, including victories over Jeppe and Pretoria Boys High.

They have, in fact, lost only twice all season, but Affies’ three tight losses have come against the top three teams in the country, hence their favourites’ tag.

  • Hilton takes the honours in Pretoria, St Alban’s snatches win at Northcliff

Hilton College clinched a hard-fought 29-12 victory over Pretoria Boys High School (PBHS) on Brooks Field on Saturday, with wing Ricky Adonis dotting down twice for the KZN side.

Rewatch all the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com)

In the opening quarter-of-an-hour, Hilton took the game to the home side and pressed hard, but they were met by resolute defence from Boys High.

When PBHS attacked, the visitors were successful at slowing down the ball. Sometimes, it seemed, by sealing it off illegally.

Hanu Pieterse and his side drew first blood, with Ricky Adonis and tight-head prop Ben le Roux going over for tries to put the visitors in the pound seats heading towards the break.

Boys High found a reply before half-time, however. They executed a well taken line-out, then drove Hilton backwards with a massive maul. When it was eventually stopped, the Candies sent the ball to flyhalf Seth Venter, who opened the hosts’ account. A former flank, Venter used his strength to add to his healthy try-scoring stats.

At halftime, there was little to separate the sides, with Hilton’s 12-5 advantage a fair reflection of how tight the match was.

Early in the second half, Jeffrey Singo scored a try for Boys High to narrow the lead, but that was as close as the home team got to Hilton. The visitors responded with two quick tries of their own, both of which were excellently converted by flyhalf Liyema Nela.

Then, when a Boys High player went in too high on a tackle in Hilton’s in-goal area, Brad Mcleod-Henderson‘s charges were able to exit from the resulting penalty. Nela was subsequently able to land a sweetly struck kick at posts from 50 metres out, benefitting from the high altitude of Pretoria.

Pretoria Boys High had an opportunity to work their way back into the contest when Hilton picked up two yellow cards, but they were 17 points down at that stage.

In the last two minutes of the match, though, Boys High scored a consolation try from an excellent run by winger Ompfuna Tsanwani, who made good use of the space his side’s numerical advantage created to hurtle over the line for five, after being put in the clear by inside centre Rickus Wessels.

After his fine run, Tsanwani clutched at a hamstring, which might be cause for concern for the Candies.

While both schools will be able to take positives out of the game, Boys High will surely rue several missed kicks at goal, which could have altered the course of the match.

St Alban’s College, meanwhile, clawed their way back from trailing 7-17 at halftime to win a humdinger of match against Northcliff High School in Johannesburg.

With the final whistle drawing near, and with three minutes left on the clock, Northcliff conceded a penalty, which the visitors’ Joshua Verster turned into three points.

Not done, Northcliff claimed a penalty of their own, but there was to be no fairytale ending and the kick at goal missed, leaving the home team agonisingly short of the Pretoria school.

The final score read 27-25 to St Alban’s. It was a third narrow loss for Northcliff this season. However, they showed they’re happy to tussle with the traditional boys’ schools under the guidance of coach Tinus Diedericks.

Candies out to make early inroads vs Hilton, St Alban’s returns from Europe

Hilton College is no stranger to intense competition. Last year, they scored a commanding 39-15 victory over Pretoria Boys High (PBHS) at home. They also produced another outstanding season. However, their journey this year has been less consistent and marked by both triumphs and setbacks.

Kick-off this weekend takes place at 13:15 on the prestigious Brooks Field, at PBHS.

In their recent derby clash with their arch-rivals, Michaelhouse, Hilton fought tooth and nail but fell short, succumbing to a narrow 23-24 defeat. It was their second loss to ‘House in succession after having not lost to the Balgowan boys since 2016.

The match, fiercely contested, came at a cost as Hilton suffered several injuries, leaving key players’ Ross Brown, Stewart Falconer, and Ivan Jjuuko all sidelined for the forthcoming match against Boys High, coach Brad McLeod-Henderson said.

On the other side of the pitch, Boys High enters the fray with determination and ambition. While their run-out last weekend against HTS Middelburg may not have been an official fixture with a visible scoreboard, it provided valuable opportunities for players across different age groups and teams to showcase their skills.

In an interesting move, PBHS tried out Jeffrey Singo on the flank. He started the season at loose-head prop.

In their previous outing, Boys High beat Parktown Boys’ High School 36-5 away from home in a scrappy affair.

The coaching staff at Boys High has taken some time to analyse Hilton’s loss against Michaelhouse. Assistant coach Wian Geldenhuys said:We are aware of Hilton’s kicking game, and I hope the referee will manage the breakdown well.”

In a boost for the home side, Stephen Adams will start a game for the first time since he injured a knee against Paarl Boys’ High on 1 April. He made a brief appearance off the bench against Parktown and made his presence felt by going over for a try.

“We are really looking forward to this weekend,” Geldenhuys said. “The boys are just about ready and can’t wait.”

Meanwhile, St Alban’s College will square off with Northcliff High School in Johannesburg on Saturday, with an early kick-off at 11:15.

St Alban’s recently returned from an overseas tour and will be looking forward to playing some rugby on home soil again. Their fixtures featured matches against schools and clubs from Spain and France.

The Hoops won two out of their four games, which included a narrow 10-5 win over St Jean De Luz Olympique and a 14-12 victory against Emak Hor Rugby, both from France.

Captain Patrick Weir has had a strong start to the season and will be eager to set the tone for Saints as they face some big matches in the coming weeks.

Their international experience would have opened up the players to different cultures, both on and off the rugby field. Lessons learnt on the tour will also, no doubt, help the players to advance their rugby education, and touring helps to further enhance bonds. It will be interesting to see what that impact in action when St Alban’s takes to the field.

Northcliff recently beat Sutherland High School 63-19 in a strong outing for the Johannesburg school. Flyhalf Matthew Hunt kicked well on the day, slotting two penalties and six conversions.

Only twice this season has Northcliff conceded more than 20 points. They’ll need their defence to be on point again to withstand the St Alban’s challenge.

    An exciting weekend lies ahead.

  • Nonstop thrills for Knights vs Jeppe, meanwhile bug hits KES

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard

The Jeppe High School for Boys and Northwood School 1st XVs have clashed 47 times. Jeppe holds the edge with 25 victories, while Northwood has claimed 16 wins and six matches have ended in draws. They meet again in Durban on Saturday.

Jeppe’s narrow 9-8 victory in 2022 and their commanding 50-17 win in 2023 serve as reminders of the unpredictability and excitement that the fixture can deliver.

The Johannesburg boys have enjoyed a strong season, but so, too, has Northwood, and it’s always tough to travel long distances. There is not much time to settle in.

    Kick-off takes place at 13:00 on Northwood’s Reece-Edwards Field.

With two strong teams set to go head-to-head, Saturday’s encounter promises to add another exciting chapter to the rivalry.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com)

Northwood is enjoying a fine season, and they head into the contest fresh off a neat 34-24 victory over Kearsney College, set up by a dominant first-half performance, which had the Knights 22-3 ahead at the break.

They’ve lost only once all season, going down 22-24 at Michaelhouse. Their results also include a 10-7 win at Hilton College and a 7-7 draw with a very good Durban High School (DHS) team at home.

In their most recent action, Jeppe played two matches at the Standard Bank Grey Rugby Festival. They won both comfortably, with their defence excelling. On the first day, they outplayed Graeme College 29-3. Two days later, this past Saturday, they followed that up with a convincing 33-5 victory over St Andrew’s College.

In a change to the pack, Jeppe will start Joseph Zulu at hooker on the weekend, with Bonga Nxumalo shifting to the bench.

It should be a fascinating clash, starting up front, where both schools boast abrasive and powerful packs. There will be plenty of support for Jeppe, but the Reece-Edwards cauldron should be electric with loud support for the home team, which has gone viral this year. Expect the crowd to go wild when the cheerleaders bang out Drake’s Nonstop, with a South African twist of flavour added in.

Up on the Highveld, St Benedict’s College hosts an in-form King Edward VII, who recently beat Jeppe in the first of their two annual clashes. KES has been hit hard by a tummy bug this week, coach Marco Engelbrecht revealed, with a number of notable players set to miss out as they recover from the illness.

Bennies will be bolstered by the return of their captain Jason Cutler from injury. He will be eager to make a telling impact on home soil against the Red Army.

St Benedict’s have struggled this season, however, and have been on the receiving end of some hefty defeats against the likes of St Stithians College and the Eastern Cape’s Graeme College at the St John’s Easter Festival earlier in the season. Despite KES missing some players, Bennies will be the underdogs. The Red Army has been formidable this season.

With an overwhelming 80-0 victory over Parktown Boys’ High, which was followed by victories over Pretoria Boys High and Jeppe, KES has momentum and confidence on their side. They’ll be chasing a sixth successive victory.

The breakdowns will be a key area of contestation that the team in red will seek to exploit.

They feature a new-look front row, which includes props Michael Anthony and Kenny Prins packing down with hooker Dylan Piek, who has already featured in the starting lineup this season, with Esethu Mnebelele missing out due to an injury.

KES will be hoping to see the talented Tristan Maugeri, who was instrumental in the team’s success last year, shift gears and add some fire to their backline.

Bennies’ coach Andrew Barnes recently completed an advanced coaching course in New Zealand during the April holidays and will be eager to put his tactics and newfound knowledge to the test against KES.

St Stithians College hosts Parktown Boys’ High School. Saints are likely the slight favourites, but Parktown has shown encouraging signs of improvement in recent weeks. Thrashed by 80 points by KES, they subsequently lost to Pretoria Boys High by 31 points. The Candies went down to KES by only 10 points. That’s progress.

Kick-off at St Stithians is at 11:50.

Saints travelled down to Grey High School last weekend where they played in the Standard Bank Grey Rugby Festival, winning one and losing one. They beat Die Brandwag 16-12 but were well beaten by Queen’s College, going down 19-54.

St Stithians will be without their first-choice flyhalf Chris Anderson but will turn to Josh Meyer to deliver the goods from the kicking tee, which he did in Gqeberha.

Parktown has some size in their squad, which will challenge Saints, while their flying winger Kabelo Jwili is a dangerman.

Last weekend, Parktown was also in action at Grey High. They lost 17-25 to St Andrew’s College but won 20-13 against Ithembelihle.

  • KES wins at Jeppe to go up 1-0

    PHOTO: Hannes Nienaber

King Edward VII (KES) secured a sweet victory over Jeppe High School for Boys on Collard Field on Saturday in the first of the season’s home and away fixtures between the rivals, winning 38-28.

Two seasons ago, KES did the double. Jeppe last managed the feat in 2018. Now, the Red Army has a shot at repeating it in 2024.

Rewatch all the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

The Johannesburg powerhouses drew a crowd estimated to be over 20 000-strong to Collard Field, which was testament to the excitement and excellence demonstrated by both teams this season. They’ll do battle again on 20 July at KES.

On Saturday, Jeppe made the initial breakthrough when flank Nathan Claassen caught KES off guard after the Zebras outflanked the visitors on the blind side, and he went over in the corner for a try.

Claassen was in the thick of things and almost had a second five-pointer after a charge-down, but that try was disallowed because the referee had blown his whistle for KES hooker Esethu Mnebelele to receive medical attention.

With the end of the half beckoning, KES put the squeeze on Jeppe, playing the game deep inside the home team’s 22. There, they effected a turnover and put lock Thomas Beiling over in the corner. A successful conversion left the visitors 14-8 in front at the break.

In the second half, Jeppe sent their wing Lindelani Nkambule over for two tries, but it wasn’t enough to arrest the momentum of KES, who carried over their strong finish to the first half into the second half.

Their Golden Lions’ Craven Week number eight Kebotile Maake delivered a standout performance, highlighted by an exceptionally high work rate. He was rewarded with a try, which showed off his talent and power.

Wing Haniel Mankoti has been a regular on the score sheet for KES this season, and he dived over for another try after getting on the end of a pinpoint long pass from flyhalf Vusi Moyo, who continues to grow in stature in the number 10 jersey. It was a case of perseverance paying off as the pair had attempted the same manoeuvre three times previously without producing the necessary execution.

Moyo scored a try of his own and also converted four out of his five kicks off the tee. However, it was his kicks into Jeppe’s 22 which caught the eye. His Garryowen’s were masterfully directed, which caused the home side problems.

Late in the match, Moyo left the field with an injury. Last year, he missed a large part of the season after suffering a broken jaw and one hopes Saturday’s knock was not as serious.

There are, no doubt, some sore bodies which will require treatment after the forwards had a good go at one another, especially in the front row.

The contest delivered what one hopes to see in schoolboy rugby, with passion and emotion fuelling a committed and skilful approach.

For some of the Jeppe boys, who are in matric, there was the disappointment of losing their last match against KES on Collard Field. Of course, they have an opportunity to inflict similar disappoint on KES when play again in July.
