  • Unbeaten Roedean and St Stithians through to Old Petrians’ semis

Unbeaten Roedean and St Stithians through to Old Petrians’ semis

The Old Petrians’ Water Polo Tournament, after two days of all-out action, headed into the playoffs at the Wahoo Aquatic Centre and St Peter’s Girls Prep Pool in Johannesburg on Saturday.

When the water had settled, Roedean School and St Stithians College remained unbeaten after the four pools had completed their assignments. They’re favoured to reach the final, but nothing is certain.

Coach Siyabonga Guzana‘s Roedean side topped Pool A with a maximum haul of 18 points, which means they went six for six without having to win any of their matches by a penalty shootout.

Meanwhile, St Stithians, the three-time champions and runner-up in 2024, compiled a perfect record in Pool C  and also bagged 18 points.

On Sunday morning, they take on Reddam House Constantia in the semi-finals, while Roedean will battle it out against Durban Girls’ College (DGC) for a place in the final.

Saints will be chasing a second title of the season under coach Megan Sileno after capturing the National Aquatics title at the start of the month. Their opponent in the title decider in East London was DGC, so a repeat of that final is, potentially, on the cards. Roedean, of course, will do everything in their power to prevent that from happening.

In the last of the pool matches, Crawford Lonehill saw off the Eastern Cape’s Alexander Road 5-2 in a Pool A clash, while Roedean cruised to a 12-2 win over Rustenburg Girls’ High School.

In Pool B, Reddam House Constantia scored a convincing 11-4 victory over Hudson Park High School, while St Anne’s Diocesan College kept Rand Park High School winless with a comfortable 18-3 victory. Collegiate Girls’ High School beat Wynberg Girls’ High 7-1, with Aimee PienaarBrigid Guest, Lara Heny, Angelica Loyson, Amy Botha, and Kate Brennan all making it onto the score sheet.

St Stithians wrapped up their domination of Pool C with a 5-1 win over St Mary’s Waverley, and St Cyprian’s eased to a 12-1 defeat of Pretoria High School for Girls.

Herschel completed their Pool D matches with a convincing 12-1 win over fellow Capetonians, Springfield Convent School, while Pearson blanked Reddam House Helderfontein 8-0, and DGC took down St Dominic’s by a 7-3 margin.

In a massive upset in the playoff, Makhanda’s Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) outplayed the defending champions, Herschel, with coach Wade Marshall‘s side recording an emphatic 8-0 victory.

DSG subsequently fell to St Stithians in the quarterfinals, going down 4-6. Roedean, meanwhile, had to go the route of a penalty shootout for the first time after their showdown with Reddam House Bedfordview ended 6-6.

In a KZN quarterfinals clash, DGC got by St Anne’s 8-6, and Reddam House Constantia sneaked by Clarendon on penalties after they had shared a 6-6 draw.

  • Old Petrians’ Water Polo Tournament: Day one’s big winners keep winning

Old Petrians’ Water Polo Tournament: Day one’s big winners keep winning

The teams that had made a strong start to the Old Petrians’ Water Polo Tournament on Thursday continued to deliver authoritative performances on day two of the big event, which has brought together 28 teams from across South Africa.

Roedean kept their winning run going by collecting 26 goals from only two games, with one-sided wins over Alexander Road and Crawford College Lonehill. They won 14-1 against Alex and 12-1 against Crawford.

Clarendon High School for Girls enjoyed a good day and edged out another of the Eastern Cape teams, Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) 5-4. Later, Clarendon handed St Peter’s College a 7-2 loss.

It has been a tough two days for the hosts, who have won only one of their five games, and that required a shootout to get one over Rustenburg Girls’ High School. Still, it’s been even tougher for Alexander Road. They remain winless.

Their results on Friday included a 2-6 loss to Rustenburg. It wasn’t close against DSG, who netted 14 times without reply, with Alexandra Ovendale, Mia Jenner, and Lucy Rutherfoord all scoring hat-tricks. Carys Johnstone scored twice and further goals came from Angelique Myers, Lila De Romijn, and Abigail Holderness.

Pool B’s Rand Park High School has also been having a tough time. Reddam House Constantia outplayed them 19-0, with Jessica Bester scoring six times.

Wynberg Girls’ High School broke their win drought with an 8-1 defeat of Rand Park, but they were well beaten in their second game, losing 0-12 to Collegiate Girls’ High School.

In Pool C, Zimbabwe’s Chisipite, after scoring two wins on Thursday, won only one of their four matches on Friday. The visitors had a good morning, sneaking by St Mary’s Waverley 3-2, but St Stithians College hung a first defeat on them, winning 8-4.

Kingswood College also doubled up Chisipite, winning 6-3, and St Cyprian’s claimed a penalty shootout win after the sides had played to a 5-5 draw.

In Pool D, the defending champions, Herschel Girls High School, and Durban Girls’ College (DGC) racked up three wins each.

Herschel thumped Pearson High School 13-4 before cruising to a 21-0 victory over Reddam House Helderfontein. Reddam also fell 4-16 to DGC. St Dominic’s tested Herschel, but the Capetonians recorded a 6-3 win.

Apart from their win over Reddam House Helderfontein, DGC brushed aside Springfield Convent School 12-1. They also scored a hard-fought 4-1 win over Kingsmead College.

  • Amy Stubbs powers Roedean School to strong Old Petrians’ Tournament start

Amy Stubbs powers Roedean School to strong Old Petrians’ Tournament start

Twenty-eight teams took to the waters of the Wahoo Aquatic Centre and St Peter’s Girls Prep School on Thursday, day one of the four-day Old Petrians’ Water Polo Tournament, in Sandton, Johannesburg.

When it wrapped up, Roedean, inspired by vice-captain Amy Stubbs had compiled an unbeaten record: three matches and three wins. Stubbs led the way, top-scoring for her side.

In their first game, Roedean faced a stiff challenge from Makhanda’s Diocesan School for Girls (DSG), but they pulled off a 6-5 win. Stubbs netted twice, while Esmé du Plessis, Gabriella Morrell, Emma Pelicot, and Taylor Billett also got onto the score sheet

DSG’s vice-captain Mia Jenner matched Stubbs by scoring twice, and Lucy Rutherfoord struck three times, but that was not quite enough for the Eastern Cape side.

In their second game, coach Siyabonga Guzana‘s Roedean came out guns blazing and roared to an 11-3 win over the hosts, St Peter’s College

Again, Stubbs led by example, scoring three goals. She was well backed up by Gabriella Morrell, the team captain Emma Pelicot, and Taylor Billett, who all found the back of the net twice. Sophie Wilcox and Ané du Plessis completed the scoring for Roedean.

In their last outing of the day, they cruised to another comfortable win, handing Clarendon High School for Girls a 9-2 defeat as Stubbs and Morrell recorded hat-tricks again.

While the score sheet might suggest otherwise, Clarendon gave their opponents a good fight. Meka Loots and Holley Jacoby were rewarded with goals for the East London school.

In Pool B, Hudson Park High School leads the pack following victories over Rand Park High School and Collegiate Girls’ High School.

They crushed Rand Park 18-0, with Kayden Glasgow‘s four goals leading all scorers. Slayde Herman and Eva Moore bagged hat-tricks, while Mackenzie Goss and Sarah Barratt chipped in with two goals apiece. Kara Batting, Amber Preston, Mia Smit, and Erin Batting also scored.

It wasn’t a flawless day for Hudson Park, however. They put up a strong showing against Reddam House Bedfordview in their third game, but came off second best, suffering a hard-fought 7-9 defeat.

St Stithians College impressed, winning their three matches emphatically. They began their day with a 21-2 romp against Pretoria High School for Girls. Kingswood College was the next to fall, with Saints running out 10-3 winners, and St Cyprian’s had to bend the knee, too, as St Stithians took their haul to 41 goals for the day after a 10-1 victory.

Pool D’s matches were evenly contested. Five teams won one game only, although Kingsmead College was the only side to play three matches.

It was very interesting! The defending champions, Herschel edged out Kingsmead by a single goal, but lost to Durban Girls’ College (DGC) in a shootout. Kingsmead, meanwhile, comfortably beat Springfield Convent School but they needed a shootout to sneak by Reddam House Helderfontein.

Both Reddam Helderfontein and Springfield finished the day winless, but they’ll have three opportunities each for victory on Friday.

Get set for the 20th Old Petrians’ Water Polo Tournament

The 20th Old Petrians’ Water Polo Tournament takes to the water on Thursday and runs through to Sunday, 25 February, with 28 schools playing 128 games as they compete for the prestigious title.

The teams have been divided into four pools of seven, with matches being played at two venues, the Wahoo Aquatic Centre and St Peter’s Girls Prep School.

The hosts are in Pool A and will be in action early on Thursday, taking on Crawford College Lonehill at 09:00 at the Wahoo Aquatics Centre.

The action at St Peter’s starts an hour earlier with the Brian Baker Water Polo Tournament hosts, Kingswood College, facing St Mary’s Waverley.

Last year’s Saints Invitational Tournament champions, Roedean Senior School, who are also in Pool A, will begin their challenge against Makhanda’s Diocesan School for Girls (DSG). After a blistering start to the Brian Baker tournament last month, Roedean finished fifth. This time, they’ll be keen to carry consistent form through to the end of the Old Petrians’ Tournament.

East London’s Clarendon High School for Girls faces another Eastern Cape side, Alexander Road High School, in their opener.

Pool B features Reddam House Bedfordview, who finished as the runner-up at both the Saints Invitational and Brian Baker tournaments and won the Roedean Prestige Cup. With that outstanding record of performing well in tournaments, they’ll be a team to keep an eye on. Their first outing will be against St Anne’s Diocesan College.

Rand Park High School tackles Hudson Park High School, while Reddam House Constantia, the third-place finisher at the Brian Baker Tournament, takes on Wynberg Girls’ High in their first match. Their successes in 2024 included winning the Mackenzie Cup in their home pool and the St Anne’s Water Polo Tournament title in KZN.

In Pool C, Zimbabwe’s Chisipite Senior School will make their bow against Stirling High School. St Stithians College, three-time winners of the Old Petrians’ title, faces Pretoria High School for Girls and later goes up against Kingswood College

Pool D’s first game will be between Springfield Convent Senior School and St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls. The group also features the defending champions, Herschel Girls School, who beat Reddam House Bedfordview in the final of the Brian Baker Tournament. They will start their title defence against Kingsmead College.

Herschel won the 2024 tournament after a 9-6 win over St Stithians in the final. Alexa de Villiers starred in that game, scoring four of their nine goals.

Durban Girls’ College, a dark horse contender, faces Pearson High School.

  • Parktown Boys’ High aims to build on 2024’s successes

Parktown Boys’ High aims to build on 2024’s successes

The 2024 hockey season brought renewed pride in Parktown Boys' High hockey. Here, captain Ryan Venter leads the school in a war cry after a game.
The 2024 hockey season brought renewed pride in Parktown Boys’ High hockey. Here, captain Ryan Venter leads the school in a war cry after a game.

The Parktown Boys’ High 1st hockey team closed the 2024 season with a big 6-1 win over Northcliff at home and, more impressively, they won 4-1 at Hoërskool Garsfontein, who made the Hibbert Shield semi-finals earlier in the season.

Parktown also reached the final of the Aitken Cup for the first time since 2010.

It was a good year that boosted optimism for Parktown hockey. Up against strong opposition, they played 34 matches, won 19, drew six, and lost nine.

Now coach Kyle Reddy‘s charges are back on the turf, training and preparing for what they hope will be an even better season this year.

“We started to prepare from the start of February, just a bit of pre-season, juggling between summer sports and academics, to get time on the turf,” Reddy told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“It’s been hampered by the weather, the storms in the afternoon, but we have managed to get some time in.”

Although many of last year’s standout performers were in grade 12 in 2024, Reddy is optimistic about the team he is building to take up the mantle for Parktown Boys’ High.

“I am quite excited about the season,” he admitted. “It’s a very different team from last year’s, with many boys having matriculated and gone to university. It will be a younger side, with some exciting talent in terms of some grade 10s that I will be thinking about.”

Reddy said he has not yet selected his first team: “We will probably get the final team together closer to March, but there is some great talent coming through from the u17  ranks. There is also an exceptional group of boys that has remained from the 2024 team.

Thokan Rayhaan and Ndyebo Pongwana, who last year made the South African u16  squad, are still at school, in grade 11 now, and Zeyad Davids, who was in the u17 SA team, will be there, too. He is in matric now. But I think we have 12 kids who were part of the squad who have matriculated,” he added.

“We remain optimistic. It’s good to rebuild and start with the new group of lads. We will see closer to the time what the team looks like and what the season has in store.

On 15 February, the Heart of the Lion boys will play a pre-season match against Northern Cape High School. Reddy described it as an opportunity to observe which players are putting their hands up for the team.

“We’re getting a big squad together to roll out against them, and seeing how the boys cope in the system will help me make decisions,” Reddy said.

Jeppe water polo team’s achievements recognised

The 2025 ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament runner-up, Jeppe High School for Boys, avenged their 11-14 loss in the final to Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) when the teams met recently on 5 February.

That silver medal-winning performance in Bloemfontein was one of the greatest achievements in the school’s water polo-playing history.

Still, they wanted to show they were capable of even more when they took on Affies again. This time, Jeppe won by four goals, scoring an 11-7 win.

After their impressive exploits in Bloemfontein, the Jeppe water polo team was warmly welcomed when it returned home.

They were invited to tea with the Headmaster, Dale Jackson, on Friday and they were named Jeppe’s Team of the Week on Sunday.

The school explained that the team was honoured because they were the first Jeppe water polo team in many years to make the final of a national tournament.

Jeppe added: “Mr Jackson told the boys, they were being recognised for their positive attitude in and around the pool, for their good behaviour, and for the example they are setting for the younger players in the club.

“You are setting the right tone and people are noticing that,” he said. “Thank you for keeping Jeppe’s name high. You have some big games ahead of you and I’m confident that, win or lose, you will make us proud.”

In further good news for Jeppe water polo, it was announced that head coach Lucky Letshabo had been appointed to the Swimming South Africa Water Polo Technical Committee. His term will last from 2025 to 2028.

In a statement, Swimming South Africa said: “This appointment reflects our confidence in your expertise, dedication, and the value you bring to our mission.”

Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) clinched the ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament on Sunday in Bloemfontein with a battling 14-11 victory over Jeppe High School for Boys.

Affies, beaten in the final in the previous two years by Selborne College, was desperate to go all the way on this occasion and make it third time lucky.

They made a good start, scoring the first goal of the contest, but Jeppe quickly responded. By the end of the first chukka, it was 2-2.

Coach Lucky Letshabo‘s Jeppe side, then, hit the front, striking twice to open up a 4-2 advantage. It didn’t last long as Affies fought their way back and levelled.

At 5-5, Jeppe had an opportunity to hit the front, but they were denied by the Affies’ netminder.

Then, for the first time since the first chukka, Affies snatched the lead. Goals, suddenly, began to rain down. At the end of the third chukka, the Pretoria school had one hand on the trophy, leading 11-8.

With typical grit, Jeppe kept fighting until the end. They shared the honours in the last chukka, with both teams netting three times, but that left Affies the champions by a 14-11 margin.

In a high-scoring battle for third place, Northwood outlasted Reddam House Constantia 17-13, while Grey High School ended fifth after a second win over Maritzburg College, beating the KZN side 10-6. They had beaten them 14-6 earlier in the tournament.

Pretoria Boys High School (PBHS) doubled up Stirling High’s score, recording a 10-5 win to place seventh. Glenwood House took ninth place after a hard-fought 11-9 victory over the hosts, Grey College, and Paarl Boys’ High enjoyed a 23-3 romp in their last outing against the Grey College 2nd team.

After a good start on Thursday, when they won their first two games, Northwood School claimed another three victories on Friday at the ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament.

Third in 2024, the Knights beat Paarl Boys’ High 17-6 and Glenwood House 18-3 on the opening day. On Friday, they withstood a strong challenge from Jeppe High for Boys to claim a 9-6 win.

Jeppe endured a tough Friday, suffering another hard-fought loss when they went down 7-10 to Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies).

The Pretoria school started the game with guns blazing and charged into a 3-0 lead only four minutes into the first chukka. Jeppe, though, retaliated and struck twice before the end of the quarter.

It was a fast-paced game, and the second chukka, again, produced five goals, with Affies also edging it 3-2 for a 6-4 halftime lead.

The scoring slowed down in the second half, but when the final whistle blew Affies enjoyed a three-goal lead.

Coach Lucky Letshabo‘s charges added a win to their record, however, when they outplayed Glenwood House 17-5.

Reddam House Constantia, unbeaten and the winner of three games on Thursday, added the scalp of Maritzburg College on Friday, with the Cape Town school claiming a convincing 10-3 victory. It was built upon a devastating start, which had Reddam five goals to the good after the first chukka.

The Red, Black, and White had no problem dealing with the Grey College II side, romping to a 23-3 win. Reddam House, meanwhile, also comfortably beat the Grey College 1st team to match Northwood’s record of five wins from five matches.

It was a good day for Grey High School, who won one and lost one on Thursday. They went two for two, beating Maritzburg College and Grey College.

The annual ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament kicked off on Thursday with 12 teams in action. The competition continues through the weekend until just after midday on Sunday, when the final will be played.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools!

Northwood, who finished in third place last year, cruised to an 18-3 win over George’s Glenwood House in their opener. Then, they edged out 2024’s runner-up, Affies, 10-9 in a very tight clash. Affies responded well by handily defeating East London’s Stirling High 13-5.

There was a rude introduction for the Grey College II team. They were trounced 22-4 by the host’s first team and Reddam House Constantia made light work of them, rolling to a 23-1 win.

Reddam went on to beat Grey High 9-6 and Pretoria Boys High School (PBHS) 12-9 to finish the day with a perfect record of three wins from three outings, which thrust them to the top of the Pool B standings.

That was not the only defeat that Boys High suffered. They lost a heart-breaker to Maritzburg College, who scored a nail-biting 8-7 win. The Red, Black, and White, also, scored another one-goal win over Grey College.

Jeppe High School for Boys took on St John’s College and St Benedict’s College recently in preparation for the Grey College tournament, producing mixed results, with St John’s scoring a 16-5 win, and Jeppe beating Bennies 27-11 in a high-scoring fixture.

Having those contests under the belt appeared to help, though, as Jeppe opened their account in Bloemfontein with a 14-7 win over Paarl Boys’ High.

A new champion will be crowned on Sunday. Selborne College, who won in 2023 and 2024, are not defending the title.

Herschel Girls School, from Claremont, in Cape Town, successfully defended the Brian Baker Water Polo Tournament title on Sunday.

They made it back-to-back titles after beating Reddam House Bedfordview in the title game. Last year, they scored a 14-11 win over Reddam House Constantia to lift the winner’s shield.

In Sunday’s showdown, Herschel started positively and exerted pressure on Reddam House Bedfordview, and that pressure was rewarded when Herschel won a penalty.

Charlotte Wiltshire took the shot and made it count, netting with a top-left bounce shot to put the defending champions ahead.

The tempo of the game picked up after the goal and within three minutes Reddam Bedfordview retaliated with a brilliant strike from Caitlin Scrimgeour.

With both sides battling away, Herschel broke the tie, with Kirsten Bottger getting her name onto the scoresheet. Reddam House, again, found a reply, this time through Alisha Beswick, with her goal levelling matters for Alex Hawkins’ charges.

A Nina Wades’ goal extended the Capetonians’ advantage to two goals, and Wades netted again to put her team three goals to the good.

Reddam Bedfordview was firmly on the back foot, but Caitlin Scrimgeour gave them some hope by netting a third goal for the Gauteng school. Heading into the final chukka, Herschel led 5-3.

The defending champs dialled up the pressure even more with a quarter to go, which delivered them a sixth goal.

In response, Coach Malcolm Ackermann’s Reddam Bedfordview side fought their way down the pool and won a penalty, which they buried to reduce the gap to two points. However, that’s how it ended, with Herschel running out the winners by a 6-4 margin as they clinched the Brian Baker title again.

In the playoff for the bronze medal, Reddam House Constantia beat St Stithians College, with last year’s runners-up winning a tight contest 5-4.

It was a good improvement for Saints, who, after an all-conquering 2023, had to settle for ninth in 2024.

Roedean School, the early pace-setters, took fifth after a 9-5 win over St Anne’s Diocesan College, while DSG Makhanda beat Durban Girls College (DGC) 5-3 to take seventh place.

Although they lost on Sunday, St Anne’s improved from 12th in 2024 to sixth in 2025.
