After an entertaining last round of Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) Inland A-League fixtures on Tuesday, Carter High and Edendale Technical High have qualified for the final, to be played on Barns Field at Maritzburg College, on 10 June.

The last round of matches included a clash of the teams that qualified for the final, with Edendale defeating Carter High 1-0.

Since joining the A-League in 2025, Edendale has made a big impact. They finished in third place in their debut season. This season, they ended in second place, trailing Carter on goal difference only after both teams tallied 16 points.

Carter scored more goals but also conceded more. They hit the back of the net 14 times and let in three goals. Edendale, meanwhile, scored only seven times, but they were rock-solid defensively and surrendered just one goal.

Ixopo narrowly missed out on a place in the title game after comfortably defeating the defending champions, Maritzburg College, in their last outing. The visitors won 3-0, with Luvuyo Mjwara netting twice and captain Mpendulo Dlamini contributing a third.

It was a tough campaign for College. They ended in fourth place, with eight points to their name.

At Alexandra High, neither Alex nor Linpark scored, but the goalless draw resulted in the relegation of Alex to the Inland B-League next season.

Both teams finished with three points, but Linpark’s goal difference was better, leaving them in seventh place, just above Alex.

ML Sultan and Haythorne also shared a goalless draw. With the points shared, ML Sultan finished in fifth position, and Haythorne placed sixth.

Mancosa Coastal A-League final set while Inland A-League teams feel the heat

The final of the Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) Coastal A-League has been confirmed. It will be a repeat of the 2024 final in which Glenwood defeated Westville Boys’ High 1-0.

The title game takes place on 9 June.

On Tuesday, a goalless draw against Durban High School (DHS) ensured Glenwood finished at the top of the table, after leading the way from start to finish.

That result left the Green Machine with 17 points, while DHS completed their round-robin campaign in fourth on 11 points.

The defending champions, Westville Boys’ High, recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Port Shepstone High, raising their total to 16 points, leaving them second on the log. Sheppie, with seven points from seven matches, ended in fifth.

By placing second and securing a place in the final, Westville has reached the title decider in three consecutive seasons.

They beat Hillcrest High to lift the trophy in 2025, but went down to Glenwood in the 2024 final in a penalty shootout. Glenwood also went all the way in 2023, beating Port Shepstone High after a penalty shootout at Chiltern Park.

Northwood narrowly missed out on the final, coming up just two points shy. They ended in third place, on 14 points. Despite the disappointment of not making the title game, it was a successful campaign for the Knights, who were on the brink of relegation during the 2025 season. A win on the last day ensured their A-League status.

On Tuesday, Northwood beat Bechet 3-1, with goals from Owami Maduna, Benjamin Huyssteen, and Dimphotsenhle Motloung. Following their challenging Coastal A-League experience last year, Northwood’s football underwent drastic improvement, with the side reaching the final of the Primo Big 10 competition in August and winning the Mancosa Cowie Cup in October.

After ending their campaign with one win and six losses, Bechet, who were promoted this season, will be heading back to the Coastal B-League in 2027.

Hillcrest High, one of the most talked about teams in 2025, when they finished as the runner-up in the Coastal A-League, endured a tougher time this season. They finished in sixth place with two victories, one draw, and four defeats from their seven matches.

However, they deserve credit for avoiding relegation, which loomed over them for much of the season. In their final game, Hillcrest High defeated Pinetown Boys’ High 2-1 behind goals from Ayedan Whitby and Thandulwethu Ndlovu.

Pinetown, who also struggled last season before going on to win the Kloof High Football Tournament in June and the Kearsney Soccer Tournament in July, finished in seventh place.

KZN Inland A-League final places up for grabs

With the Coastal A-League finalists confirmed, the pressure intensifies in the Inland A-League, whose final matches are on Wednesday, 27 May.

Carter High, the 2025 runner-up, has 16 points ahead of their last round-robin match against Edendale, who are three points behind Carter, in third place.

Edendale could make the final with a win over Carter. They would also need Ixopo, who are in second, to lose to Maritzburg College on Barns Field.

College, the defending champions, have been eliminated from contention for a place in the final. They’re in fourth place, with eight points. A win over Ixopo would lift them to 11 points. Both sides will be supremely motivated to win.

At the bottom of the table, the situation is as intriguing as the situation is at the opposite end of the log. Alexandra High props up the standings, on two points, while Linpark, in seventh, is also on two points. They meet at Alexandra High on Wednesday, and one of those sides will be demoted to the B-League for 2027.

ML Sultan and Haythorne Secondary are tied on six points, in fifth and sixth, respectively. They, at least, will go into their last matches knowing that their places in the A-League have been secured for next season.

  • GDL Weekend Recap: Victories for Rockefvs, Siwelele and Sundowns

GDL Weekend Recap: Victories for Rockefvs, Siwelele and Sundowns

Gauteng Development League (GDL)A highly competitive race is unfolding at the top of the Gauteng Development League (GDL), with Rockefvs leading the way. They’re on 26 points, two ahead of second-placed Siwelele, but the Pretoria club has a game in hand.

Rockefvs has been the season’s surprise package, thus far. As the pressure has amped up, they’ve stood strong. However, it’s only going to get more intense as the fixtures pile up.

Another team from Pretoria, the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who have two games in hand, secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Jomo Cosmos on Sunday.

It was the second game of the weekend for Cosmos, who recorded a 1-0 victory over Panorama on Saturday.

On Sunday, in the Bafana Ba Style against EzeNkosi clash, Antoine Bumba, assisted by Daylin Tiemie, scored the first goal for Sundowns. Fusi Mokhampane then set up Thando Singo for the winning goal.

After 10 matches, the Brazilians have registered seven wins, one draw, and two losses. They’re in third place, four points behind Rockefvs, but with two games in hand. Wins those and they’ll vault into a familiar place at the top of the log. Slip up, and Joburg City and Kaizer Chiefs are waiting to make their move.

On Saturday, Itebogeng Maake, a key contributor to Rockefvs’ success this season, netted the game’s only goal in a tight 1-0 victory over Wits Juniors.

Siwelele also won, defeating Seven’s Academy 3-0 on Saturday, which also helped to improve their goal difference.

Joburg City, in fourth place, handed the Prestige Football Development Academy a 2-1 defeat, with Siyabonga Masango netting both goals for Joburg City.

Highlands Park, last season’s runner-up, continues to improve its log standing after making a slow start to the season. They’re up to ninth after a narrow 2-1 victory against Randburg, who scored late in the game. That gave them hope of rescuing a draw, and the Lions of the North had to withstand heavy pressure in the closing minutes to hang onto the win.

Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA) registered a comfortable 3-0 victory over Pitso Mosimane Youth Football (PMYF). Bandile Sithole opened the scoring, with an assist from Nceba Jozela, who then turned goal scorer to make it 2-0. Enslee Oliphant, who set up Jozela for his goal, also assisted Thabang Masihla for RESA’s third.

One match failed to deliver goals, with Future of Africa and Kathorus Hyper Academy settling for a goalless draw.

  • KZN Inland A-League final place on the line for three teams

KZN Inland A-League final place on the line for three teams

soccer goalThe 2025 runner-up, Carter High, is on track for another final in the Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) Inland A-League.

The Pietermaritzburg school tops the table with 16 points after a commanding 4-0 victory over Alexandra High on Wednesday.

Despite playing on their home ground, Alexandra High struggled with the high-pressing counterattacks and heavy pressure applied by the visitors. Those bore fruit for Carter, who cruised to victory.

Bayanda Msomi and Amkelwa Khuzwayo netted twice each, making it six goals apiece for the duo this season.

The defeat leaves Alexandra at the bottom of the table, with two points after six games. They’re winless thus far, with two draws and four losses on their record.

Ixopo had an opportunity to solidify their second-place on the log, but they were held to a goalless draw by Haythorne Secondary, also at Alex. Still, Ixopo remains in contention for a place in the final.

Edendale will challenge them. They, too, have 13 points and trail Carter by three points. Last season, in their first season in the Inland A-League after winning promotion in 2024, they finished in third place.

On Wednesday, their title aspirations faced a stern examination on Barns Field, where they met the defending champion, Maritzburg College. Goals from Manelisi Shezi and Alwande Bekwa earned Edendale a 2-0 victory.

After dominating KZN football over the past three years, College is undergoing a restructuring phase. It’s been a challenging season and, after six league matches, they’ve won two, drawn two, and lost two. Last week, they fell to a defeat against Carter High.

Earlier this year, they went winless in Kimberley at the annual Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament, which underlines the struggles the side has endured after their successes in previous seasons. No doubt, they’ll work their way back into contention.

ML Sultan – with goals from Celokuhle Gasa, Thabiso Madlala, and Kuhlesbonge Zulu – scored a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Linpark.

With only one match remaining in the regular season and six matches already played, the Griffins have recorded four wins, one draw, and one loss.

On Tuesday, propelled by goals from Nkanyezi Mkhungu and Kayden van Wyk, they beat Pinetown Boys’ High to move above Northwood to second place in the standings.

One more victory would secure their qualification for the Coastal A-League final on 9 June.

Glenwood, however, continues to set the pace. They’re unbeaten in the league, with five wins and one draw after six matches.

Captain Ndalo Mbatha, who has been pivotal for Khaya Mngwengwe’s team, netted a goal in the win over the Knights, with Iviwe Mkhulise contributing the second for Glenwood.

The reliable Rhys Millar netted a consolation goal for the Knights.

  • GDL heats up as Rockefvs stands firm under pressure

GDL heats up as Rockefvs stands firm under pressure

On Saturday, table-topping Rockefvs played to an intense 1-1 draw with Highlands Park. Photo: Supplied.

Changes are afoot at the top of the Gauteng Development League (GDL) standings, with some of the usual suspects, including Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, making a move upwards. Rockefvs, however, remains in first place, although the pressure is mounting each week.

On Saturday, the log leaders were held to a 1-1 draw by Highlands Park, another regular title contender, at Balfour Park, with Itebogeng Maake, assisted by Tatenda Nyandoro, earning a share of the spoils for the visitors.

The Lions of the North, after the draw at home, are now positioned in the middle of the pack, and they continue to climb since making a slow start to the season.

They won the GDL in 2023 and 2024, and finished as the runners-up in 2025. This season, they stumbled out of the gate, losing their first three matches. However, Sfiso Mnguni’s squad has recently begun to accumulate points, helped by the inconsistency of other teams.

Following the draw with Highlands Park, Rockefvs has 23 points, with Siwelele, the early pace-setters, in second place. They won a Pretoria derby against the University of Pretoria (Tuks) on Saturday, triumphing 2-1, with Boitshepo Raphala netting the consolation goal for Tuks.

Randburg, who were in second place, dropped points, going down 1-2 against Jomo Cosmos, which allowed Siwelele to move above them, and just two points behind Rockefvs.

Joburg City travelled to Vereeniging to face Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA) at President Park Stadium. A victory for the visitors would have lifted them to 21 points, equal with Siwelele, but Joburg City was held to a 2-2 draw. Karabo Challa and Lindo Chai scored for the visitors.

The GDL Top 8 champions, Kaizer Chiefs, rose to third, with 20 points, after scoring a 3-1 victory over Prestige Football Development Academy at Naturena Village.

The Brazilians moved into the top four of the standings following a 5-2 victory against Future of Africa on Saturday at Clapham High. Thando Singo initiated the scoring for ‘Downs in the fourth minute of the match, receiving an assist from Kgaeogelo Monanyane.

Monanyane, then, provided a second assist, this time for Sipho Mkhwanazi to net Sundowns’ second. Antonine Bumba contributed their third goal, Zayyaan Nizamdim netted the fourth, and Sivuziwe Lozin capped off the scoring with the champions’ fifth.

The match was highly competitive, resulting in several cards being issued, including a red card to Mvelo Heliso of Bafana Ba Style in the 87th minute.

In other matches on Saturday, the Pitso Mosimane Youth Football (PMYF), which recently joined the GDL after acquiring the status of East Rand Athletic Club, scored a resounding 6-0 victory over Africa School of Excellence.

Both Tebogo Moremi and Mikhulu Booi scored twice, putting PMYF 4-0 ahead, and Yolisa Dyantyi and Mpendulo Sithole further boosted their side’s goal haul.

The School of Excellence is still struggling to establish itself in the GDL following the acquisition of the development side by Chipcor Developers in 2025. Before Chippa Mpengesi’s purchase, the School of Excellence had faced challenges in recent GDL seasons.

On Sunday, Panorama claimed a 2-1 victory over Kathorus Hyper Academy, with Junior Mabaso scoring both goals for the Roodepoort club, thanks to assists from Thabang Hlaui and Neo Maswabi.

  • Algeria defeats Amajimbos at Afcon, dropping them to second

Algeria defeats Amajimbos at Afcon, dropping them to second

South Africa dropped points on Sunday after suffering a 0-2 loss against Algeria in their second u17 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group D match at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé, Morocco.

Yacine Abed stunned Amajimbos with his two goals, securing a win for the North African side.

Abed, who was named the Man of the Match, netted the first goal for Algeria in the 41st minute. His second came five minutes from the end of regulation time.

The 16-year-old, who plays for club football for Algiers’ Paradou Athletic Club (PAC) Academy, delivered an assist to Melwane Zaidi in Algeria’s opening 2-2 draw with Ghana. That helped his side overcome a 0-2 halftime deficit.

With the loss, South Africa slipped from first place in the group to second. Senegal, who Amajimbos beat in their opening match, scored a 1-0 win over Ghana, leaving the Senegalese in third place.

Two matches in, the Ghanaians are still searching for their first victory in a group many view as the toughest of the four.

The top two teams in the final group standings will automatically progress to the quarterfinals of the tournament and also gain automatic qualification for the FIFA u17 World Cup, which kicks off in November in Qatar.

The third-placed teams will have another opportunity to reach the World Cup through a playoff against the other third-placed sides. The Amajimbos, however, will be aiming for automatic qualification, just like they achieved in 2025.

They could secure their World Cup place with a win over Ghana in their final group match on Wednesday.

  • Durban Academy dominates Coastal C, while Inland B-League rivalry heats up

Durban Academy dominates Coastal C, while Inland B-League rivalry heats up

GoalkeeperOn Friday, Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) matches were played in the Coastal C- and Inland B-Leagues. With the season nearing its conclusion, some teams are fighting for the right to play for titles. For others, their goal is to escape relegation.

In the Coastal C-League, Durban Academy has been in impressive form. They headed into Friday’s game against George Academy with a perfect record of four wins from four games, and they maintained their winning ways, coming away with a 3-1 victory.

With three games still to play in the regular season, they’re poised to secure a place in the final where the title and promotion to the Coastal B-League will be up for grabs.

Canaan College, in second place, is some way back, with seven points, while George Academy and Kloof High School also have seven points, but occupy third and fourth places, respectively, based on goal difference.

While Durban Academy is in a strong position to claim the top spot and a place in the final, the battle to earn the right to face them for the title is wide open. Not only are the next three teams tied on seven points, but Durban North College, in fifth place, is only one point behind them, with six.

With three matches to play and nine points available, an intriguing run-in awaits.

On Friday, Canaan College boosted its case with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Kloof High, Durban North College edged out Rossburgh 1-0, and Ashton Ballito drew 2-2 with Queensburgh High B

In the Inland B-league, the competition is extremely close, with only two points separating Michaelhouse, in first, from Maritzburg College B, in fifth.

‘House has nine points and College B seven. The Red, Black, and White trails fourth-placed Heritage Academy on goal difference. Just one point ahead of them, both Alexandra High B and Northbury have eight points, with Alex in second thanks to their superior goal difference.

At the lower end of the Inland B-League, Thornhill props up the table. After four matches, they have not yet picked up a point.

Riverwood College is only one point ahead of Thornhill and in seventh place. Maritzburg Christian School (MCS), with four points, is in sixth.

On Friday, Alexandra B and Northbury, two of the contenders for a place in the final, drew 2-2, while Heritage Academy and Riverwood College shared a goalless draw.

Maritzburg College B and Michaelhouse both secured three points. ‘House outplayed MCS 3-0, and College won 3-1 against Thornhill.

South Africa kicked off their Confederation of African Football (Caf) u17 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Senegal on Thursday at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Rabat, Morocco.

The Amajimbos, under the guidance of coach Vela Khumalo, faced a challenging start against the 2023 u17 Afcon champions, and they trailed 0-1 at halftime after Senegalese defender Cheikh Thior scored with a header from a corner kick.

Whatever Khumalo and his technical team said to the Amajimbos during the halftime break proved effective, as they returned to the field energised.

Only three minutes into the second stanza, Inganathi Simama, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns in the Gauteng Development League (GDL), netted the equaliser for South Africa, following confirmation from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) that the ball had indeed crossed the line.

Just seven minutes later, a long-range shot from Kaizer Chiefs’ Reotshepile Malete deflected off Senegal’s goal scorer,  Thior, into his own net, which proved decisive.

Senegal fought relentlessly to level the scores, and the drama was heightened late in the game when two potential goals were disallowed for offside in the final 20 minutes.

Ultimately, the contest ended in a 2-1 victory for Khumalo’s team, who defended exceptionally well in the second half to maintain their lead.

Despite the loss, Cheikh Dieng of Senegal was named the Man of the Match for his contributions. He pressured Amajimbos, particularly in the second half, forcing the South Africans to turn over possession. However, the 2023 Afcon winners were unable to conjure up an equaliser.

In a highly competitive Group D, which also includes Ghana and Algeria, it was a critical winning start for South Africa, and a 2-2 draw between the Ghanains and Algerians further helped the Amajimbos’ cause.

Theirs was a game of two halves, with Ghana going up 2-0 in the first half and Algeria striking back in the second half to claim a share of the spoils.

That draw leaves South Africa top of the group with three points.

Midweek wins for Carter, Queensburgh, Inland C-League final set

On Wednesday, in the Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) Inland A-League, Carter High increased its lead at the top of the standings with a 1-0 victory over Maritzburg College.

Carter, the 2025 Inland A-League runner-up, avenged their defeat in the 2025 final, beating their city rival on a goal from Bayanda Msomi. The win increased Carter’s tally to 13 points, one more than Ixopo, who picked up a 2-0 win over Linpark.

Edendale climbed above Maritzburg College, from fourth to third, after securing a 2-0 win over Haythorne. They now have 10 points, two points clear of College. To qualify for the final, Edendale will need to win its last two round-robin fixtures.

The chase for a place in the final remains open. Even Maritzburg College, with two wins, two draws, and one loss from five matches, still has a chance to qualify for the title game, or even finish at the top if the three teams above them drop points in the forthcoming two games. But their chances have slimmed after losing to Carter.

A 100% winning record for Queensburgh High after five games

Queensburgh High has won five out of five in the KZN Coastal B-League. Their most recent victim was Sastri College, with Queensburgh recording a 2-1 win in their clash on Thursday.

In second place is Brettonwood, with nine points. They fell further off the pace set by Queensburgh on Thursday when they were beaten 1-0 by Grosvenor Boys’ High, Ziyanda Ndlovu netted the decisive goal for the school from The Bluff.

New Forest High has now drawn level with Brettonwood on points after a 2-1 victory over Redwood College, thanks to goals by Awande Ngcobo and Lwandle Ngobese. Brettonwood, though, owns the better goal difference.

After their defeat, Redwood is at the bottom of the table, in eighth place, while Empangeni is in seventh, and Amanzimtoti occupies sixth place, with five points.

Asibonge Ngobese netted twice in Empangeni’s 2-1 win over Amanzimtoti, which improved their points haul to four. Their position, at seventh, was unchanged.

Siyanda and Umvuzo get ready for an epic Inland C-League finale!

Siyanda High and Umvuzo Secondary are set to meet in the final of the Inland C-League on Thursday, 28 May. On the line will be promotion to the 2027 KZN Inland B-League.

With three wins and two draws from their five matches, Siyanda High finished top of the table, with 11 points. Umvuzo finished in second place with nine points from five games, with three wins and two losses.

On Thursday, they outplayed Maritzburg College C 5-1, with braces from Sabelosami Mkhize and Ntokozo Mkhize leading their charge, while Alwande Duma scored their fifth goal.

Umvuzo was held to a 1-1 draw by Smero Secondary, while St Nicholas Diocesan School scored a 3-1 victory over Carter High B.
