CSA Pathway Awards 2025: Maphaka and Meso’s rise from u19 recognition to the Proteas

JOHANNESBURG: One of the key honours at the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Pathway Awards 2025, taking place in Johannesburg on 31 July, is the CSA Under-19 Player of the Year award. This accolade recognises players who have made outstanding contributions at the U19 level throughout the 2024/25 season.

The nominees for this year’s CSA U19 Men’s Player of the Year are Adnaan Lagadien (Western Province), Muhammad Bulbulia (KZN Inland), (Central Gauteng Lions), JJ Basson (Central Gauteng Lions), and Jason Rowles (Central Gauteng Lions).

Janicke Janse van Rensburg (Titans), Sive Silati (Western Province), and Olwethu Gasa (KZN Coastal) are in line for the top award in women’s youth cricket, the CSA Girls U19 Player of the Tournament 2025.

These awards have been a stepping stone for players who have gone on to represent South Africa at the highest level. Recent winners include Karabo Meso (2023) and Kwena Maphaka (2024), both of whom made their senior international debuts after receiving the award.

Maphaka was crowned after taking 21 wickets at the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup 2024, helping South Africa reach the semi-finals on home soil.

“It was massive for me in terms of my career at that point. Coming from a World Cup prior and being the most senior player in the team, I felt the responsibility to put in big performances for the team and I was really pleased that I could do that,”

Maphaka’s rise continued as he became the youngest Proteas Men debutant at just 18 years and 137 days old, playing in the first T20 International against the West Indies in August 2024, shortly before completing high school.

“There have been a lot of memorable moments, but I think the standout was my Proteas debut. I had always believed that I’d be in the mix around age 22, so to play my first game before I had written prelims was really cool and a massive honour and privilege.”

Meso made her Proteas Women debut at 16 years old, playing against Sri Lanka in March 2024. She later played a key role in helping the SA U19 Women reach the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup final in 2025 after impressing in the first-ever instalment of the competition which was held in South Africa in 2023.

“Winning the U19 Player of the Year meant a lot to me in every aspect since I started playing cricket. It was the biggest award I’ve ever received, bigger than any other award I’ve received in cricket.

“Even when I’m staring at it at home in front of the TV, it reminds me of the 2023 CSA Awards. Walking up to the stage and receiving it from Chloe Tryon and Anrich Nortje, I won’t forget that moment.

“Looking back at the U19 team, it prepared me in so many ways. It taught me how to carry myself on and off the field, and around people. It also gave me a taste of what life is like as a Protea, how professional players live day-to-day.

“Now I know what’s right and wrong, and I’m grateful for everything the U19 setup taught me,” she concluded.

BENONI: Jason Rowles turned in a strong all-round performance but it proved to be in vain as South Africa Under-19 (SA U19) Men slipped to a second successive loss in their three-match Youth One-Day International (YODI) Series against Bangladesh in Benoni on Saturday.

The hosts, beaten by 130 runs in the opening match at Willowmoore Park on Thursday, this time suffered a 104-run defeat to the tourists, who moved into an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Tour co-captain Rowles first bowled tidily, returning figures of none for 43 to help restrict the visitors to 265 for six after winning the toss and opting to bowl.

Paul James (2/21) and Corne Botha (2/60) both picked up two wickets apiece.

In reply, Rowles top-scored with an entertaining 51 off 48 balls, which included five fours and two sixes. However, there was little support from the rest of the team – Botha’s 26 being the next best effort – with the junior national side rolled over in 30.2 overs.

It meant that Bangladesh moved 2-0 ahead with the third and final match to follow on Tuesday.

Coach Malibongwe Maketa and his team will no doubt be disappointed by their latest setback, almost a repeat of the tour opener.

Bangladesh made a strong start again to their innings as Zawad Abrar (57 off 53 balls, 1 four, 6 sixes), Azizul Hakim Tamim (67 off 90 balls, 4 fours, 2 sixes) and Rizan Hossan (52 off 71 balls, 4 fours) all hit half-centuries that left their side in a powerful position at 205 for three in the 41st over.

But James’ twin strikes and JJ Basson (1/58) did well to help haul their side back and keep the target to what was seemingly within range.

However, Muhammad Bulbulia, SA’s batting hero from the first game, was dismissed for two, along with Adnaan Lagadien (5), Armaan Manack (5) and Vihan Pretorius (12), all inside the opening 10 overs to leave the hosts with a mountain to climb.

That early damage was done by Al Fahad (2/29), Iqbal Hossain (1/25) and Tamim (2/35), before Rowles fought back with a partnership of 49 alongside Kamogelo Phiri (20).

Shadhin Islam (2/9) added two scalps to his name, and by the time Botha tried to hit out, the game was all but done for the South Africans.

They were eventually bowled out with nearly 20 overs to go, giving Bangladesh a big win.

KFC Mini-Cricket: Celebrating Grassroots Champions at the CSA Awards

CSA LogoJOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA), in partnership with KFC, is proud to spotlight the unsung heroes of grassroots cricket as part of the upcoming CSA Pathway Awards, focusing on the individuals nominated in the KFC Mini-Cricket Coach and Coordinator of the Year categories.

These awards honour the people who help build the foundation of cricket in South Africa. KFC Mini-Cricket reaches thousands of children across all provinces, providing not only access to the sport but also creating a pathway for future talent to be identified and developed

This year’s nominees for the KFC Mini-Cricket Coach of the Year include Makgokolotso Moremoholo (Free State), Rozanne Steenkamp (Boland), Phillip Mapheto (Limpopo) and Ntombikayise Patience Xongo (Kei).

In the KFC Mini-Cricket Coordinator of the Year category, Aventhea Kearns (Boland), Bongani Gwamanda (KZN Inland), Nation Ntlame (North West) and Ofentse Ranoto (Titans) have been nominated for their notable contributions to the programme’s operations in their respective regions in the 2024/25 season.

From running festivals, clinics, and school matches to mentoring volunteers and working with schools and parents, the coaches and coordinators’  dedication is felt at the heart of their local communities.

Speaking on the importance of recognising the KFC Mini-Cricket coaches and coordinators and their impact on grassroots cricket, CSA Mass Participation Manager, Buhle Vaphi, commented:

“These awards are more than just a title, it’s a reminder that the heart of cricket in South Africa beats in our schools, on dusty fields, and in communities where kids first fall in love with the game. Recognising these volunteers and coordinators means we’re acknowledging where it all begins.

“These coaches and coordinators give their time, often after hours and on weekends, with no expectation of recognition. But their impact? It’s long-lasting. Many of our national players once stood in line behind cones, waiting for their turn to bat, guided by a coach just like the ones we’re honouring now.

“They’re everything: teacher, motivator, sometimes even a second parent. When a six-year-old picks up a plastic bat for the first time, it’s the coach’s energy and kindness that shapes whether they feel confident or shy, excited or overwhelmed.

“Coordinators, behind the scenes, make sure there are enough balls, kits, and games for those kids to play. Without these volunteers, the system doesn’t move. They make sure cricket is accessible, fun, and a safe space for all kids, no matter where they come from.

“To every coach and coordinator across South Africa, you are the heartbeat of this programme. Whether you’ve just started or have been involved for years, know this: you are building more than players, you’re building people. Every time you show up, even when it’s hard, you’re moving the legacy forward. These awards might spotlight a few, but they honour all of you. So let’s keep going, together,” she added.

Andra Nel, Head of Corporate Affairs KFC Africa, said:

“It is through the devotion of coaches and volunteers nationwide that the programme continues to level the playing field and inspire the next generation. The programme is more than a game, it is an opportunity to build confidence, nurture talent, foster equality, confidence, and resilience to create lasting impact, one child at a time.

“We are proud to stand beside you and celebrate every one of you who makes it possible.”

The KFC Bucket Loads of Good Award will also be presented to an individual who has made a lasting difference in their community beyond their role in the game.

  • Bangladesh u19 Win Big In Opening YODI

Bangladesh u19 Win Big In Opening YODI

Muhammad Bulbulia reaches 50 (Photo: CSA)

BENONI: Muhammad Bulbulia struck the highest score of the match but it was not enough as South Africa Under-19 (SA U19) Men suffered a 130-run defeat to Bangladesh in the opening match of their three-game Youth One-Day International (YODI) Series in Benoni on Thursday.

The SA U19 captain recorded an excellent 72 off 79 deliveries (4 fours, 3 sixes) at Willowmoore Park, nearly half of the 155 all out managed by the hosts in pursuit of the 286-run target set by the tourists.

Opener Bulbulia was man alone with the bat, though, lacking support and which ultimately led to his side being dismissed in 32.1 overs.

However, there was one strong bowling performance from a South African earlier with JJ Basson grabbing four for 47 to help restrict the visitors to 285 for six after the home side won the toss and chose to bowl first.

That final total threatened to be far bigger earlier when Zawad Abrar (70 off 61 balls, 9 fours, 2 sixes), Rizan Hossan (63 off 55 balls, 5 fours, 3 sixes) and MD Abdullah (63 off 76 balls, 7 fours) put their side into a powerful position by each scoring strong half-centuries.

But from 228 for three in the 41st over, seamer Basson helped drag the Bangladeshis back in the final nine overs to keep the total well below 300.

The South Africans needed a good start to their reply and they got it through Bulbulia.

But he kept losing partners at the other end, starting with Jorich van Schalkwyk (0) and Armaan Manack (3), both of whom fell to Iqbal Hossain (3/26).

Then when Daniel Bosman was caught and bowled by Rizan Hossan (1/14), the home side found themselves in further strife, on 42 for three.

Kamogelo Phiri (8) and Vihan Pretorius (6) were then outfoxed by the excellent Shadhin Islam (3/29) making it 70 for five, before Paul James (24) hung around long enough to help his skipper take the total past 100.

However, he too was on his way soon followed by the rest of the tail and the innings ended when star man Bulbulia was last man out to Islam handing the away side the series lead.

The series continues with match two at the same venue on Saturday.

BENONI: Player exposure and growth are two areas that South Africa Under-19 (SA U19) Men will be targeting as they prepare for their three-match Youth One-Day International (YODI) Series against Bangladesh starting in Benoni on Thursday.

This is according to head coach, Malibongwe Maketa, who is looking forward to the three games followed by a subsequent tri-series that also involves Zimbabwe as the junior national side begin their final preparations for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026 early next year.

The South Africans, semi-finalists in the last tournament they hosted at the start of 2024, are looking towards Bangladesh to offer them a different prospect in terms of testing their skill levels as they prepare for next year’s finals in Zimbabwe and Namibia.

“We try as much as possible to expose them to different conditions so that they start their international base with a lot of exposure,” Maketa said ahead of the series.

“For us as coaches, it (these series) allows us to get to know the players better and understand what areas to focus on in terms of their growth going forward.

“We’ve been really lucky to have been able to take them to Namibia where we will be based, and then also taking them to Zimbabwe now is going to be great exposure for them because that is where the semi-finals and final will be.”

Maketa and his coaching team have built a solid core of players, led by co-captains Muhammad Bulbulia and Jason Rowles. However, the door still remains for those impressing for their provinces.

“We’re continuously working towards improvement with the players,” Maketa explained.

“We can also say the door is not yet closed for others to push for a spot. But we’re always looking to upskill the players so that they are able to perform in different conditions like they will be facing in the World Cup.

“It’s very hot at that time of year in Namibia and so upskilling against spin in the middle overs for example, is something we’re working on. Also bowling in the flat conditions is another area to look at. Making sure our fast bowlers have good control, so it’s a lot about overall development of our players.”

Maketa is looking forward to the challenges that will be posed by Bangladesh.

“The Bangladeshi players get early exposure into first-class cricket, so we know we’re going to have less bad balls bowled at us, we know the quality of spin is going to be very high and so from that point of view it’s going to give us a good idea on where we need to sharpen up.

“Some of the guys will be representing our country for the first time and that will also bring different pressure. So we’re looking forward to the start of the final journey to the World Cup which Bangladesh will bring for us,” concluded Maketa

TSHWANE: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced the third phase of the SA U19 Women’s national training programme, with 39 of the country’s most promising youngsters invited to the high-performance camp from 16 – 19 July at the CSA Centre of Excellence in Tshwane.

In preparation for the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027, this camp marks a shift from broader talent identification to targeted development. Following successful instalments earlier this year, the group has now been narrowed down to 39 players, based on performance and growth potential.

The squad includes Proteas Women-capped wicketkeeper batter Karabo Meso, alongside Ashleigh van Wyk, Mieke van Voorst, and Diedre van Rensburg. Also among the group are Chanel Venter and Jae-Leigh Filander, all of whom were part of the SA U19 Women’s side that reached the final of the World Cup in Malaysia in January.

Reflecting on the selection process, player development, and goals for the upcoming camp, SA U19 Women’s head coach Dinesha Devnarain commented:

“We looked for raw talent, whether that’s from a Strength and Conditioning point of view, whether they are really quick, or they have great attributes of a spinner. Players who are looking to take the game forward but can also strike, rotate, and have good technique. We went along those lines to see how we can add value to this pipeline.

“After we held the first two camps, the Talent Acceleration Programme (TAP) leads got into serious work with regards to the skills we’ve identified, which will be crucial for the subcontinent. From all aspects, batting, bowling, fielding, and also from a mental point of view.”

“In the SA U19 Women, we have a culture document that we strive ourselves on, maintaining those types of standards. I’m hoping we get a chance during these four days to present that document so the players are well aware of what’s expected at the South African Under-19 level.”

“Hopefully, what we see after this camp is the team taking shape into what the balance of the squad will look like heading into the World Cup,” the coach concluded.

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has today announced the South Africa Under-19 (SA u19) Men’s squad for the upcoming three-match Youth One-Day International (YODI) series against Bangladesh, followed by a tri-series involving hosts Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in Harare.

The three-match home series against Bangladesh will be played from 17 – 22 July at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, before both teams travel to Zimbabwe for the tri-series scheduled from 25 July – 10 August.

The tour forms part of the squad’s ongoing preparation for the ICC u19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026, set to take place in Namibia and Zimbabwe early next year.

KZN Inland batter Muhammad Bulbulia and Lions all-rounder Jason Rowles will continue to share captaincy duties, having led the junior Proteas during the recent series against Namibia.

There are three new faces in the squad, with Lions duo Corne Botha (seamer) and Armaan Manack (top order batter), along with Titans batter Vihan Pretorius, all earning their maiden call-ups to the national age-group side.

SA u19 Convenor of Selectors Patrick Moroney commented: “We had a productive selection week featuring three competitive 50-over matches involving a pool of 27 players.

“Armaan impressed with a standout knock of 147 and has shown good progression through the emerging setup. Vihan brings added depth with his versatility as a batting option, while Corne has been on our radar for some time and really put his hand up with the ball this past week.

“Overall, we’re pleased with the balance of the squad and look forward to seeing how these players take their opportunities in the coming weeks.”

SA u19 Head Coach Malibongwe Maketa added: “We’ve retained both Muhammed and Jason as co-captains because we believe strongly in developing leadership within our youth structures. This approach also gives us the opportunity to assess both players in leadership roles across more matches before selecting a single captain for next year’s Under-19 World Cup.

“We’ve always maintained that the door to selection remains open, and it’s exciting for us as coaches to welcome new players like Corne, Armaan, and Vihan. They’ve shown great promise, and this tour gives us the opportunity to see how they perform at junior international level.

“The home series against Bangladesh will be a strong test against a quality subcontinent side and provides exactly the type of challenge we need as we continue building towards the World Cup. Both series will help us assess our progress and identify areas for improvement as we sharpen our preparations.”

Opener Lagadien top-scored with 85 off 65 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes), with fellow opener Van Schalkwyk scoring even more rapidly during his innings of 62 off 44 balls (9 fours).

Phiri then belted an unbeaten 73 off 67 balls (7 fours, 1 six) as the visitors posted a mammoth 375 for nine.

The Namibians, beaten by 10 wickets in the series opener when they were blown away for 95, put in a far more credible performance with the bat this time around, replying with 244 for eight. Captain Alexander Volschenk was their mainstay with 68 off 100 balls (3 fours, 1 six), while Paul James was the pick of the bowlers with three for 51.

In the end, the visitors still won comfortably to clinch the series with a game to spare. The final match takes place on Friday.

The junior Proteas began their latest outing with a bang thanks to openers Lagadien and Van Schalkwyk.

After losing the toss and being put in to bat, the pair tuck into the bowling during an opening stand of 122 in 14.4 overs, before the latter fell to Rowan van Vuuren (1/69).

New man and captain Muhammad Bulbulia (46) then put on 58 with Lagadien, before adding another half-century stand of 53 with Lethabo Phahlamohlaka (30).

That took the away side to 233 for two, but two quick wickets left them on 242 for four, with the innings from there then centred around Phiri as he worked his way in, before cutting loose to help his side to an impressive 376-run target. Max Heingo was the pick of the home bowlers with three for 38.

Namibia’s top four of Zacheo van Vuuren (42), Michael Muller (20), Tiaan van der Merwe (38) and skipper Volschenk ensured they made an assured start without threatening the target too much.

They enabled their side to reach 214 for four at one stage, though that was only in the 45th over.

In the end, the total proved too formidable and the bowlers helped close out the win. Apart from James, there were two wickets for Dayalan Boyce (2/33) and one each for Waco Bassick (1/30), Enathi Khitshini (1/39) and Ntando Soni (1/57).

WINDHOEK: Jason Rowles claimed an incredible five-wicket haul to set South Africa Under-19 Men on their way to a one-sided 10-wicket win over Cricket Namibia in the opening game of their three-match 50-over series in Windhoek on Monday.

The slow left-arm spinner sent down six overs in which he returned five wickets for just eight runs. Thirty-one out of his 36 deliveries were dots, with his unbelievable figures key to rolling over the hosts for 95 at the Namibia Cricket Ground.

Adnaan Lagadien then plundered nine fours and a six in a dashing unbeaten 65 off 47 balls to help the away side chase down their target inside 12 overs and go 1-0 up in the series. Match two takes place on Wednesday.

Before that, the junior Proteas will take full pride in this win after delivering a complete performance from the time they won the toss and bowled, right through until the end.

Fit-again Lions fast bowler JJ Bason (2/32) struck in the third over when he got rid of Muller Michael for a duck, before possibly the only passage of play that went well for the Namibians over the next 10 overs.

This was when Zacheo Jansen van Vuuren struck a top score of 41 and put on 41 with Malan Morkel (10) for the second wicket, allowing their side to reach 49 for one.

But Ntando Soni (1/22) then began the slide by dismissing the latter, with the former following just under three overs later when he was removed by another Dolphins player, Bandile Mbatha (1/9).

The slide continued as Rowles worked his magic and no other Namibia player managed to reach double figures. In the end they collapsed and were all out in 28 overs, which included losing nine wickets for 46 runs.

Lagadien was then in no mood to hang around, and together with Jorich van Schalkwyk (23* off 25 balls), chased down the target with 38.1 overs to spare.

TSHWANE: Building on the momentum of previous SA20 U19 Women’s Camps, the second instalment of the SA U19 Women’s national training camp commenced today at the CSA Centre of Excellence in Tshwane.

This four-day camp, from 25–28 April, continues the collaborative efforts between Cricket South Africa (CSA) and SA20 to nurture emerging talent ahead of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027.

The 24-player squad features a blend of emerging talent within the U19 age group, including Six Gun Grill Western Province wicketkeeper batter Jae-Leigh Filander, who was part of the Junior Proteas side that collected silver at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025 in Malaysia.

Mirroring the format of the initial U19 Women’s camp in March, the youngsters have been selected based on their standout performances during the 2024/25 season’s National Weeks.

Throughout the camp, the players will undergo athletic performance profiling along with net sessions and intrasquad matches, all closely overseen by the coaching staff and national scouts.

Adding to the experience, the team will also receive a visit from former Proteas Men’s batter and current SA20 Head of Cricket Operations, Stephen Cook.

SA U19 Women head coach Dinesha Devnarain commented:

“Like we did with the first camp, the players selected for this second U19 national camp were identified based on strong performances during the National Weeks. This is the second group from an initial pool of 50 players, and it’s exciting to bring together another talented batch to see how they compete and showcase their abilities.”

“We’re looking for vibrant players who can support our brand, and ultimately, we’re searching for those with the potential to lift a World Cup trophy for South Africa in the U19 space.”

“We’ll introduce our fitness standards and offer the girls exposure to inspiring voices, this time, Stephen Cook from SA20 will be addressing the group about supporting the under-19 programme.”

“We’re placing a strong emphasis on game time. There will be matches throughout the weekend and possibly a net session to observe how the players train and translate those efforts into match performances. We’ll wrap up the camp with a debrief to reflect on what we’ve seen.”
