JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has today announced the 15-player South Africa Under-19 Men’s squad set to tour Namibia for a three-match 50-over series later this month.

There are five changes to the squad that beat England U19 2-1 earlier this year.

The tour marks a welcome return for Lions fast bowler JJ Bason, who missed the England series due to injury.

Western Province all-rounder Waco Bassick and Lions wicketkeeper Kamogelo Phiri earn their maiden call-ups to the SA U19s, while the Dolphins pace duo of Dayalan Boyce and Bayanda Majola have made the step up from the CSA Emerging U19 side that toured Zimbabwe last year and competed in this season’s 1-Day Cup in Division 2.

North West batter Muhammad Bulbulia and Lions batter Jason Rowles will share the captaincy duties under the guidance of head coach Malibongwe Maketa.

The series, which forms part of preparation for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026, gets underway on 28 April at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. The second match will follow on 30 April at the same venue, before the series wraps at the High Performance Oval on 02 May.

SA U19 Convenor of Selectors Patrick Moroney commented: “The squad was selected with an eye on next year’s U19 World Cup in Namibia and Zimbabwe. We’ve stuck with the core group of players who have performed consistently, while also rewarding those who impressed for the CSA Emerging team in the 1-Day Cup.

“This tour provides Mali and his squad with another important milestone in their preparation for the World Cup. Playing in similar conditions against the host nation will give them the necessary confidence to build a well-rounded squad with a good chance of success in next year’s tournament.

“Along with this tour, we will also have camps with the extended focus group and a home series against Bangladesh, all of which will assist us in finalising the squad that will represent the junior Proteas at the World Cup.”

TSHWANE: Cricket South Africa (CSA) is gearing up to host two national training camps for the South Africa Under-19 Women’s team as preparations begin for the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027 in Bangladesh and Nepal.

The first training camp will take place from 20-23 March at the CSA Centre of Excellence in Tshwane.

A total of 24 players will attend the first camp, including three promising talents who helped South Africa reach their first-ever U19 Women’s World Cup final, where they finished as runners-up to India in Malaysia. Ashleigh van Wyk, Diedré van Rensburg, and Chanel Venter are part of the squad, alongside Jané Verhage, who was a non-travelling reserve during that historic tournament.

As part of a broader vision to build a strong foundation for the next World Cup cycle, CSA has identified 50 players through its Talent Acceleration Programme (TAP), following an extensive scouting effort during the national weeks held at the end of 2024.

Head coach Dinesha Devnarain highlighted the thorough selection process undertaken to cast the net wide and ensure no stone is left unturned in unearthing talent across the country.

“While myself and the management team were busy in Malaysia, the TAP leads and the Selectors went to the Under-13 Regional Week, Under-16 National Week and the Under-19 National Week and that’s how we got to the 50 identified players.

“What we are also looking to do is a roadshow to go around the country and see that we’ve touched every avenue and we’re not missing any talent that’s out there. You know how the Weeks go, sometimes they might not perform at their best. So we want to give that opportunity again to go around the country in a less pressured environment”.

The upcoming four-day national camp will focus heavily on skills development and match practice, with a specific emphasis on fitness, an area Devnarain is keen to elevate within the team.

“The first day of camp is just dedicated to fitness. It’s something that I want to be better at with this World Cup squad. I want us to set a goal for ourselves to be the fittest team there. And that’s a control level.

“We’ll put them through two matches. There’ll be some skill sessions as well, but just to put them in a live net, see what they’re about, see how they operate, how they go about their business, who creates conversation and what type of conversations there are.

“We are really looking forward to working with the new crop of players. We do have some returning players so that will be exciting to see where’s the level at and where are the gaps that we need to cover,” Devnarain continued.

Looking ahead, Devnarain also stressed the importance of blending experience with fresh talent, especially with several players from the previous World Cup squad still eligible for the 2027 campaign.

“It’ll sort of be the same message that we said from the 2023 group to the 2025 group, nothing is guaranteed.

“At the end of the day, you’ve still got to meet the demands of international cricket and the brand of cricket that we want to play in South Africa. We also want to match up the girls that have been to World Cups before with the girls that haven’t. We want to match up those skills and see what areas we might have to fill as well as just from a mental aspect and creating a culture.

“Really looking forward to heading into the 2027 preparations and to start with 50 girls that did relatively well for their provinces at the national week is an excellent way to start,” she concluded.

KUALA LUMPUR. –  South Africa u19 Women have booked their place in the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup final after a five-wicket victory over Australia u19 Women on Friday.

After being sent in to bowl first, the Junior Proteas made an early attack as Nthabiseng Nini struck with the very first delivery to dismiss opener, Ines McKeon.

However, the standout performance came from Ashleigh van Wyk, whose remarkable spell of 4/17 in three overs dismantled Australia’s batting lineup. With wickets falling at regular intervals, South Africa restricted Australia to 105/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing 106 for victory, opener Jemma Botha (37), captain Kayla Reyneke (26), and Karabo Meso (19) ensured a comfortable run chase, reaching the target with 11 balls to spare.

Van Wyk, who was named Player of the Match, reflected on her performance:

“I kept myself calm by breathing after each ball, staying present in the moment, and reminding myself and my teammates that every ball is an event. I stuck to what has been working for me and followed the team plan throughout the tournament, backing myself and the hard work we have put in over the last 18 months.

“You always need support to achieve victory. It’s never just about what I do, t’s about the way my teammates and management back me. That support allows me to play with heart and without regrets, whether things go my way or not.

“As a team, we rely on our management for mental preparation, but the key to lifting the trophy is playing for each other. We back each other, celebrate each other’s successes as if they were our own, and function as a family and a unit,” she concluded.

South Africa will now face the winner of the ongoing match between India U19 Women and England U19 Women at the Bayuemas Oval.

JOHANNESBURG. – Cricket South Africa (CSA) continues to pave the way for the nation’s future cricketing stars, ensuring that the sport is accessible to aspiring players and all who want to play it.

As the South Africa u19 Women prepare for the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final, their journey is a testament to CSA’s commitment to nurturing young talent and providing a platform for excellence.

A crucial pillar of CSA’s development framework is the KFC Mini-Cricket programme, one of the largest grassroots initiatives on the continent. The programme has played a vital role in shaping many of the players competing on the world stage today.

Among them are Karabo Meso and Seshnie Naidoo, who have already earned their debuts for the senior national team, an achievement that underscores the strength of South Africa’s talent pipeline.

Western Province’s Jae-Leigh Filander, Jemma Botha, and skipper, Kayla Reyneke are also a product of the KFC Mini Cricket programme.

“I started playing Mini Cricket in Grade 1 after watching my brother play. I thought I could beat him, and from that moment, I fell in love with the game,” shared Filander.

“Mini Cricket played a crucial role in my journey because it introduced me to the sport and fuelled my passion to keep playing. I would advice to young cricketers to keep playing the sport. If you have a passion for the game, everything will fall into place. Always give 100% because, in the end, hard work and dedication will take you far,” said Filander.

Meanwhile, the CSA National Weeks serve as another key stepping stone in a young cricketer’s journey, fostering age-group cricket and allowing players to hone their skills at a competitive level.

Easterns’ rising stars, Mieke van Voorst and Ashley van Wyk, exemplify the success of this system. Having progressed through the U13 and U16 Girls Cricket Weeks, they now find themselves representing South Africa at the World Cup while also making a significant impact in the Women’s Pro Series for Eastern Storm in Division 2.

Reflecting on their partnership, the duo credits their time together at the U16 National Week for strengthening their on-field chemistry.

“Representing our country in a World Cup semifinal is a big moment for us, but we’re staying calm and trusting in our preparation. We have incredible support from our coaches and management, ensuring that we are mentally and physically ready.

“We strongly believe that if you put in the hard work behind the scenes, your dreams will become reality. It may seem far away, but if you take it step by step, success will come,” said van Wyk.

Their commitment is not only evident on the international stage but also in their determination to elevate their domestic team.

“We relied on each other a lot, batting together for long periods allowed us to understand and complement each other’s game. We are always striving for Division 1 status with Eastern Storm. The experience we’ve gained at the World Cup will help us bring back valuable insights and lift the overall standard of play within our squad,” shared van Voorst.

The Women’s Pro Series has been instrumental in developing and nurturing young talent across South Africa. The professionalisation of women’s cricket, sparked by the Proteas Women’s historic ICC T20 World Cup final appearance on home soil, was further strengthened by investments from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) and key partners.

With the entire SA U19 Women squad already gaining exposure to professional cricket at such a young age, these rising stars are well-positioned to make a lasting impact on the game in the years to come.

An outstanding century by Muhammad Bulbulia, mixed with strong rearguard performances from Lethabo Phahlamohlaka and Raeeq Daniels, helped South Africa u19 Men secure a dramatic draw with England in the first Youth Test at Coetzenburg Oval in Stellenbosch on Wednesday.

Chasing 317 for victory, which was set after the tourists declared their second innings on 336/9, the hosts began well through their Bulbulia, with the right-handed opener scoring 114 off 154 balls, with 13 fours.

But once Bulbulia, who scored 88 in the first innings, fell, three others followed quickly, which left the hosts in a precarious position on 236/8. However, Phahlamohlaka defended 85 balls for an unbeaten 45 and Daniels saw off 51 deliveries for his 24 to keep England at bay.

The junior Proteas eventually ended on 295/9 – just short of the victory target – though that had become a secondary objective behind survival after the hosts lost quick wickets. In the end, Martin Khumalo, who contributed an unbeaten nine, had to come out and face eight balls to also play his part in a thrilling draw.

The day had started with England batting on 275/8. The visitors managed to enhance their lead thanks in the main to Jack Home’s 60 not out. It came from only 69 balls and included five fours and two sixes.

Spinner Chad Mason claimed the only wicket to fall when he removed Tazeem Ali for 19 to end with a fine 5/111.

The South Africans made a fair start to their run chase by reaching 47 before Jorich van Schalkwyk fell to the Player of the Match, Farhan Ahmed for 27. It was the first of five wickets in the innings for Ahmed, who would finish with 5/103.

Adnaan Lagadien fell shortly after Van Schalkwyk for four. However, Bulbulia and Jason Rowles, who weighed in with 51 off 97 balls, gave the home side hope with a splendid partnership of 119 for the third wicket that took them to 180/2.

Ahmed, then, caused chaos by snapping up four wickets, which included removing both of the set batsmen, as well as SA captain Beni Hansen and Divan de Villiers, both for four.

Ali, who finished with 3/56, further jolted the hosts, nabbing two quick wickets in as many overs to leave them precariously placed on 236/8 with around an hour still to play.

That was when the rearguard instincts of Phahlamohlaka and Daniels kicked in. They added exactly 50 for the ninth wicket. Ali, eventually, ended that stand with just over an over to play.

After Khumalo braved the final few deliveries, the match ended in a tense draw.

SARAWAK. – The South Africa u19 Women have secured their place in the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025 semifinals, with one Super Six match still to play against USA on Tuesday, 28 January (04h30 SAST).

This achievement marks a significant step forward for SA, who fell short of a semifinal spot in the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup held at home in 2023, missing out due to net run rate.

The team’s consistent excellence in this year’s tournament highlights their determination and growth, with performances that have showcased a competitive edge on the global stage.

They began their campaign with an impressive victory over New Zealand and continued their dominance by defeating Samoa and Nigeria in Group C.

A confident win over Ireland in their first Super Six fixture further solidified their position in the tournament.

Titans duo, Monalisa Legodi and Simoné Lourens have played pivotal roles in the team’s success and shared their thoughts on the team’s journey, preparation, and the upcoming match.

Legodi shared her excitement about the team’s achievements:

“Reaching the semifinal of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup is an incredible achievement! It feels amazing to be competing with the best teams in the world, and it’s a testament to the hard work we’ve put in. While we’re thrilled to have made it this far, we know the job isn’t done yet. Our focus remains on giving our best in every match ahead.

“We’ve been taking it one game at a time, analysing our performances, and learning from every match. There’s a real sense of unity in the squad, and we’ve stayed positive while working hard to remain composed under pressure.

“Mentally, I focus on staying calm and clear about my role in the team, while physically ensuring I’m prepared through proper warm-ups and mental readiness. In key moments, it’s all about trusting my training and staying present in the game,” said Legodi.

Lourens reflected on the team’s journey and what lies ahead:

“It feels incredible to have reached the semifinals, and I’m so grateful for this opportunity. It’s a major milestone and we’ve worked tirelessly to get here. There’s a mix of excitement and focus as we prepare for what we know will be tougher challenges ahead.

“Our mindset has been all about staying grounded and taking it one game at a time. While we’re proud of our performances so far, we know the importance of consistency and sticking to our plans.

“For me, staying calm under pressure is key. I focus on playing each ball on its merit and not getting overwhelmed by the moment. Trusting my preparation and the hard work leading up to this World Cup has been vital. The support from my family at home, my batting partner Jemma Botha, and the entire team has given me so much confidence,” said Lourens.

The right-arm seamer claimed five for 49 in 21 overs, seven of which were maidens, as the hosts restricted their visitors to 275 for eight at stumps.
Mokoena was helped by Raeeq Daniels (2/39) and Martin Khumalo (1/34) with almost all of the junior Proteas’ bowlers disciplined for the home side, who entered the series on the back of a 2-1 victory in the Youth One-Day International series that concluded on Wednesday.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Mokoena struck in his first over when he dismissed England captain Archie Vaughan, caught behind by wicketkeeper Lethabo Phahlamohlaka for a duck.
The South Africa star was then on a hat-trick when he trapped Kesh Fonseka leg before wicket, also without troubling the scorers, with the first delivery of his next over.
And when Ben Dawkins (10) was out to the same bowler in the 12th over, the tourists found themselves at 21 for three. That became 27 for four after Aaryan Sawant (9) was cleaned up by Khumalo – the South Africans celebrating their commanding start to the game.
England then hit back thanks to Ben Mayes (37) and Thomas Rew (43), though the pair fell by the 48th over to leave their side precariously placed at 120 for six.
However, they were rescued further by Farhan Ahmed (90 off 150 balls, 9 fours, 1 six) and Jack Home (63 off 116 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes) as the pair added 153 for the seventh wicket, before the home side finally struck to remove both before the close.
That allowed them to wrestle back the advantage and end the day in the ascendancy.

SARAWAK. – South Africa u19 Women continued their impressive run in the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025, securing a seven-wicket victory against Ireland in their first Super Six fixture.

Inclement weather delayed the start of play, and the match was reduced to 10 overs per side, with SA sent in to bowl first.

A superb bowling performance laid the foundation for the victory as Monalisa Legodi delivered a remarkable spell of 4/4 in two overs.

Captain, Kayla Reyneke, was equally impactful, returning figures of 3/2 in just under two overs. Their combined efforts saw Ireland bowled out for 35 runs.

Reyneke also led with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 16 off 17 balls, supported by Simoné Lourens, who contributed 14 runs. South Africa comfortably chased down the target, losing only three wickets.

Reflecting on her standout performance, Legodi said:

“I really enjoyed my spell today. The ball was coming out well, and I focused on hitting my areas and executing my plans. I was in a good rhythm and backed myself to deliver for the team. It helps when the team around you is buzzing with energy and keeping the atmosphere positive.

“I want to keep building on this momentum. It’s all about staying consistent, working on my strengths, and contributing in every game. The key is to keep things simple and enjoy the process.

“We have a great team environment where everyone supports each other. Whether it’s celebrating wickets, backing our teammates, or keeping the energy high in the field, that positive vibe makes a big difference – and we thrive off it,” said Legodi.

Raeeq Daniels claimed four wickets to set the South Africa u19 Men‘s cricket team on their way to a series-levelling five-wicket win over England in the second Youth One-Day International at the Western Province Cricket Club in Cape Town on Sunday.

The medium-pacer produced three maidens and returned a stellar four for 25 from nine overs as the tourists were bundled out for only 161.

Nqobani Mokoena lent good support, capturing two for 33, after the junior Proteas opted to bowl first after winning the toss.

Then, in reply, Jason Rowles (33), Paul James (32), and Bandile Mbatha (30*) played key roles and guided the home side to victory with nearly 20 overs to spare.

It was an important win for coach Malibongwe Maketa’s side, especially after they lost the opening game by the same margin on Friday. The three-match series is now level at 1-1 with the final game set for Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch on Wednesday.

The hosts were much improved in game two, swarming all over England from the outset. Daniels was at the heart of the attack, removing Ben Mayes (7) in the fourth over and Aaryan Sawant (0) in the eighth, with Mokoena undoing Archie Vaughan (0) in between.

Further wickets by Ntando Soni (1/17) and Mbatha (1/15) left the visitors in even deeper trouble at 68 for five, before half-centuries by Ben Dawkins (59 off 92 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) and Joseph Moores (59 off 61 balls, 7 fours, 4 sixes) propped up the scorecard. They also shared a 41-run partnership.

The tourists’ tail offered little threat and England was eventually dismissed in 41.5 overs.

Opener Adnaan Lagadien (10) fell early in the South African run chase, but a 45-run partnership between Rowles and captain Beni Hansen (18) kept the hosts on track during the early part of their pursuit.

Daniel Bosman added 17 and another important partnership – this time 46 runs for the fifth wicket – between James and Mbatha helped the South Africans win to set up a series decider.

    Summarised scorecard

England u19 161/10 (Ben Dawkins 59, Joseph Moores 59, Raaeq Daniels 4/25, Nqobani Mokoena 2/33); South Africa u19 164/5 (Jason Rowles 33, Paul James 32, Bandile Mbatha 30*, Farhan Ahmed 2/24). South Africa u19 won by 5 wickets.
