The South Africa u19 Women’s cricket team began their ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a 22-run victory (DLS Method) over New Zealand u19 Women in a rain-affected match at the newly constructed Borneo Cricket Ground, in Sarawak, Malaysia, on Saturday.

Following a delayed start due to wet conditions, the game was reduced to 11 overs a side.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to field, but South Africa made the most of their time at the crease.

Openers Jemma Botha and Simoné Lourens laid a solid foundation with a 52-run partnership for the first wicket. Botha top-scored with 32 runs, while Lourens contributed 21.

The momentum was further boosted by Karabo Meso, who smashed a quickfire 25 off just 14 deliveries, which propelled South Africa to a competitive total of 91/7 after their 11 overs.

Then, a disciplined bowling performance by South Africa kept the victory target out of reach of the Kiwis.

Monalisa Legodi was the pick of the South African bowlers, delivering an exceptional spell to pick up 2/8, while Kayla Reyneke provided crucial support, claiming 2/15. New Zealand was restricted to 69/5, falling short by 22 runs.

Botha, named Player of the Match for her vital innings, reflected on the significance of the game and her preparation: “Switching to a shorter format after the rain delay required quick adaptation. I focused on staying mentally engaged and keeping the team’s goal at the forefront.

“It is a proud moment to contribute to the team’s success in the opening game of the World Cup and to be a part of history, playing and winning the first-ever match at this new venue,” she added.

Chad Mason top-scored and claimed two wickets but it was not enough as the South Africa u19 Men’s team was swept aside by England in the opening contest of their three-match Youth One-Day International (ODI) series at Western Province Cricket Club in Cape Town on Friday.

The tourists won by five wickets after bowling out the home side for only 87. They, then, chased down the low target in 18.3 overs.

KZN Inland Tuskers’ star Mason was one of just two players to record double figures, contributing 23 off 47 balls, while Bandile Mbatha managed 12.

Then, with the ball, Mason captured two for 22 in fours overs, while Jason Rowles snared two for 12, but it wasn’t enough as the visitors won comfortably to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Earlier in the day, SA captain Beni Hansen called the toss correctly and chose to bat first, but the junior Proteas struggled as the England bowlers wreaked havoc.

James Minto removed three of the top five on his way to a superb return of three for 15, which included the prize wicket of Cubs Week Batter of the Week, Rowles, for seven. The other top-order batsmen were dismissed by Harry Moore (2/17), which left South Africa in desperate trouble on 27 for five.

Mason and Mbatha did their best to conjure up some sort of target and, with the aid of extras (17), they managed to set 88.

Ben Dawkins fell early to Nqobani Mokoena (1/20) for one, before Ben Mayes (51 off 48 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) and Archie Vaughan (26) seized command with a stand of 68, which killed off any hopes of a win for the home side.

In the end, the English cruised home with more than 31 overs to spare.

Coach Malibongwe Maketa’s side returns to the Western Province Cricket Club on Sunday with an opportunity to bounce back and level the series in the second ODI.

The SA u19 Women have concluded their three-match T20 series against the USA u19 Women, winning the series 2-1 after a nine-wicket loss in the final match.

South Africa posted 155/5 in their allotted 20 overs, with solid contributions from Diedré van Rensburg (39) and Karabo Meso (37).

They were well supported by Diara Ramlakan (25), Fay Cowling (23*), and Jae-Leigh Filander (20*).

However, the USA’s Disha Dhingra made light work of the run chase, with an unbeaten century to secure a big win for the visitors.

South Africa’s captain, Kayla Reyneke, expressed mixed emotions but emphasised the positives.

She also acknowledged the importance of learning from the series in preparation for the global stage, as well as the camaraderie and teamwork that have become hallmarks of the squad.

“We have a number of elements we need to work on going into the World Cup. There ares still improvements to be made and we will take the wins and build on them,” Reyneke said.

“The team has been with each other for a few months, playing together and spending time together. We celebrate together, and we get along nicely both on and off the field. We are a solid unit,” she continued.

“Our goal is to inspire young girls, and for them to know that they have access to the sport. It sounds so cliché, but it’s so simple. Cricket is a hard sport, but if you love it, you’ll wake up every day wanting to work hard and excel in the game.”

With their sights firmly set on the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup, the SA u19 Women’s team carries the hopes of a nation and has an opportunity to set an inspiring example for the next generation of cricketers.

Captain, Kayla Reyneke, led from the front with an impressive three-wicket haul, while Nthabiseng Nini provided crucial support, claiming two wickets.

In response, Jemma Botha anchored the chase with a superb unbeaten 54. She set the tone with Simoné Lourens (21), the pair contributing a solid 40-run partnership for the opening wicket.

Botha then found a reliable ally in Diara Ramlakan (26), and the hosts comfortably reached the target with more than four overs to spare.

Capping future stars of the game ahead of the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup

In a proud and symbolic moment, the South Africa u19 Women’s World Cup Squad were officially capped at a special ceremony at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday.

The event, themed ‘Capping Future Stars of the Game,’ was held during Day 3 of the Proteas Men’s Test match against Pakistan, marking the Junior Proteas’ final preparations for the second edition of the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025.

The tournament, set to take place in Malaysia from 18 January to 02 February 2025, will see South Africa making its second appearance on the global stage. Drawn in Group C, the SA u19 Women will face Samoa, New Zealand, and fellow African side Nigeria in the group stages.

Head Coach Dinesha Devnarain, who continues to lead the team with passion, praised the players’ readiness for the challenge:

“We’ve worked hard over the last 18 months to ensure that we take the best 15 players to the World Cup. I’m particularly pleased with the eight returning players who have put in the hard yards and earned their place again. This is a unique group of players, some of whom have already been exposed to senior cricket, which will be crucial in bringing experience to the team.

“The level of cricket in the Women’s Pro Series has also helped elevate our players to a higher standard, and that experience is vital. We always emphasise transferring learnings from domestic cricket or past World Cups to the younger players who haven’t had that exposure.

“We are focused on the task ahead and confident that the team will do South Africa proud,” said Devnarain.

The team will remain in the Cape Winelands until 10 January, based at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport, where they will play in three T20 practice matches against the USA u19 Women on 06, 07, and 08 January. These games are a critical part of the team’s preparation, along with official World Cup warm-up matches against Ireland on 13 January and India on 15 January.

As the SA U19 Women’s team prepares to compete on the world stage, CSA calls on all South Africans to rally behind these future stars.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday confirmed the forthcoming tours for the South Africa u19 men’s and women’s teams for the 2024/25 season in preparation for future ICC age-group tournaments.

The SA u19 women will start their summer of cricket with a Youth T20 International (T20I) series against Ireland u19 in Tshwane from 28 October to 1 November.

The five-match series will be held at the Groenkloof Oval in the capital city and will serve as preparation for the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025, which will be held in Thailand and Malaysia.

The SA u19 men will face England u19 in a multi-format tour from 17 January to 6 February in the Western Cape.

The three-match Youth One-Day Internationals (ODI) series features matches at the Western Province Cricket Club in Cape Town on 17 and 19 January and wraps up on 22 January at Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch.

A two-match Youth Test series, running from 27 January to 6 February, with matches taking place at the Coetzenburg Cricket Club in Stellenbosch and the Western Province Cricket Club in Cape Town, will bring the tour to its conclusion.

A 50-over warm-up match for the tourists has also been scheduled, with Western Province’s junior side taking on England on 14 January in Cape Town.

CSA Head of High Performance, Grant van Velden commented: “Competitive international cricket is invaluable for the growth of both our SA u19 women’s and men’s teams. These tours are crucial stepping stones as we prepare for the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup and the ICC u19 Men’s Cricket World Cup over the next 18 months.

“Hosting youth international cricket in South Africa not only provides our young cricketers with vital match experience but also showcases the exceptional talent we have in our country. It’s an opportunity to inspire the next generation of players and fans.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Ireland and England cricket boards for their collaboration in making these tours a reality. Their cooperation is instrumental in providing our teams with the high-level competition needed to excel on the world stage,” he said.

  • Maphaka and Stolk relishing home World Cup

Maphaka and Stolk relishing home World Cup

    18 January 2024

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – JANUARY 06: Steve Stolk of South Africa during the Men’s U19 Tri-Series, 5th Youth ODI match between South Africa and India at Old Edwardians CC on January 06, 2024 in Johannesburg, South Africa. (Photo by Sydney Seshibedi/Gallo Images)

South Africa under-19 starlets, Kwena Maphaka and Steve Stolk, are relishing the prospect of a home World Cup as they prepare with their team to take on the world.

The country will stage the ICC u19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024, starting on Friday in Bloemfontein and Potchefstroom, with the tournament set to run from 19 January to 11 February.

Both players are expected to play key roles for South Africa, who are drawn in Group B alongside England, Scotland and the West Indies, whom they will face in their opener at the JB Marks Oval on Friday.

For Maphaka, one of the nation’s finest fast bowling prospects, it will be a second ICC u19 Cricket World Cup tournament after the 17-year-old featured for the junior Proteas at the last edition held in the Caribbean two years ago. But there is nothing better for him than a World Cup being played on home soil.

“The mood in the camp is very good and the boys are very excited,” the 17-year-old Lions’ sensation said. “There are some nerves at the same time, but it’s a good thing to have before an occasion as momentous as this, so we’re looking forward to it.

“Playing at home is obviously something really nice to have. You’ve got that home ground advantage, which plays into our hands a little bit. I think it’s just really nice that everyone knows the conditions quite well, and you’ve got people here that really back you.

“You can have your friends and family come over. You’ve got people that you know right there, watching live, so it just adds on to the privilege of being at a World Cup.”

Kwena Maphaka – Photo: Gallo Images (Darren Stewart)

For opening batsman Stolk, aged 17, too, there is nothing better than what lies ahead for coach Malibongwe Maketa and his charges over the next three weeks.

“I’m personally really excited to be representing my country in a home World Cup. There is, honestly, no better opportunity and honour as a young cricketer,” he said. “A home World Cup is, obviously, special, and I think we do have an advantage. We look forward to South Africans coming out in numbers and supporting us. This is one of the biggest benefits.”

Both players are also looking forward to dominating their disciplines as they try to help South Africa win a second World Cup crown. They previously won it in 2014.

“I’m feeling quite good,” Maphaka, who has taken 12 wickets in his last three outings, said. “It’s very exciting to be back for my second campaign.

“I can’t really say too much about my personal goals. It’s something I like to keep to myself before a tournament and rather speak about them after the tournament, once the dust settles, also on whether I achieved them or not. So, I’m just looking to contribute to the team and hopefully I can help us on our way to a World Cup [title].”

Stolk, too, was in good touch in recent weeks, helping the South Africans reach the final of the Tri-series against India.

He added: “I’m feeling in quite good touch. But that, I feel, is very much a mental thing; I need to ensure I keep a clear mind and have my options in place.”

Naturally with any home World Cup, there are expectations – expectations from fans, coaches, players, and everyone who knows sport. Maphaka feels the South African team is ready to live up to those expectations.

“Everyone knows their expectations and everyone’s clear on what they need to do,” he said. “So, the expectation really is just to go out there and do your job…and if everyone does that, I think we’re going to go really far in this tournament, and we definitely have a shot at winning the World Cup.”
