  • Stars of SA Sevens in town for the Heritage Sevens

Hoërskool Kanonkop hosts the High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota, as part of its Heritage Sports Festival, which runs from 10-14 September in Middelburg.

The event, which takes place on Saturday, will also be graced by the SA Academy Sevens team, who will be in action against a club team, the SA All Stars and the Pumas.

Adding some sparkle to the occasion, South Africa’s Olympic bronze medal-winning Sevens team has been in town since Monday and has been interacting with the local community. The Sevens stars participated in a Padel evening on Wednesday, a golf day on Thursday, and they will be involved in a parade in the town on Friday, which will include a signing session.

In the schools’ competitions for u17 and u15 teams, the names of Helpmekaar, HTS Middelburg, and Hoërskool Middelburg leap to the fore as potential winners, but there are no givens in sport, and Sevens is a particularly unpredictable game.

St Charles College successfully defended their Eston One Insurance T20 Night League title on Wednesday evening, powering their way to a comfortable 32-run victory over Maritzburg College.

There was none of the drama that accompanied their four-run victory over Hilton College in the 2023 final, nor their spectacular run chase to beat Westville Boys’ High in the last over of the semi-finals. This was a solid and comprehensive victory.

Saints‘ skipper Marcell Wellman elected to bat first after winning the toss and that proved to be a good call, with the captain doing his bit to make it so.

The openers, Cian Fortmann and Rico Honiball, got St Charles off to a strong start, partnering for 62 runs in 7.5 overs before Fortmann was caught by College captain Chad Mason off the bowling of Julian Konigkramer for 21 from 24 deliveries, with three fours.

His dismissal brought another left-hander to the wicket, Wellmann, and he proceeded to take the game to the College bowlers. He and Honiball shared a stand of 53 runs before Mason had the opener caught by Brendon Senzere for a well-played 38. Honiball’s innings included four fours and lasted 43 balls.

There was no respite for College as Brendon Sunguro joined Wellmann out in the middle. They spent only two overs together but added 23 runs before the captain departed for a decisive 56 from only 36 balls, which included six fours and two sixes. He’s been in superb form this season, leading from the front, and Wednesday’s crucial innings was the latest of many examples of his all-round excellence.

The Zimbabwean international, Sunguro, went on to blast an unbeaten 30 from only 15 balls, sending two of them over the boundary and cracking another two into it, as Saints totalled a healthy 170 for 3 from their 20 overs.

Mason did a solid job with the ball for the Red, Black, and White, picking up 1/23 in his four overs, while Julian Konigkramer removed two batsmen at a cost of 35 runs.

The College run chase began with a hiccup as the in-form Llewellyn Sutherland fell to Saints’ paceman Rowen Rajah, caught by Connor Riley, for a single. Daniel Nadasan and Chad Mason did a fine job, however, of getting their team back into the contest.

In just over 10 overs, they added 82 runs before Mason was run out by Covhan Baaitjies in a costly blow to Maritzburg College’s chances. He’d made a telling contribution, nonetheless, of 50 from 37 deliveries, hitting seven fours and a six.

Just four runs later, Nadasan fell, bowled by Kaiyuran Naidoo for 31 from 32. His dismissal left College on 93/3 after 12.3 overs.

The loss of two set batsmen in quick succession proved to be a hammer blow to their chances. From there, their innings crumbled, with six more wickets going down for the addition of only 32 runs. Brendon Sunguro and Cian Fortmann ripped it apart. Sunguro was especially devastating, snaring 4/16 in his four overs, while Fortmann supported him superbly, claiming 2/28 in four.

A solid start had College in the hunt, but their challenge tailed off and they finished well short, restricted to 138/9 in their 20 overs, as only one other batsman made it into double figures.

Kaiyuran Naidoo snapped up 1/17 in three and Rowen Rajah finished with 1/23 in three as Saints retained the title with an assured and dominant performance.

    Scores

St Charles College 170/3 (Marcell Wellmann 56, Rico Honiball 38, Brendon Sunguro 30*, Cian Fortmann 21, Julian Konigkramer 2/35); Maritzburg College 138/9 (Chad Mason 50, Daniel Nadasan 31, Brendon Sunguro 4/16, Cian Fortmann 2/28)

St Charles won by 32 runs

  • Jim Fouché wins u17 JF Sevens, Grey the u15 champs

There was joy for the hosts, Hoërskool Jim Fouché, as they claimed the u17 title at the High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota, event in Bloemfontein on Saturday, while Grey College walked away as the u15 champions.

JF took advantage of the fact that Grey’s rugby players did double duty on the weekend, with their frontline team in action at the NWU Prestige Sevens, where they beat Hoërskool Nelspruit in the final.

That shouldn’t distract from a fine performance by the hosts, given the incredible depth of talent at Grey, and their 21-20 victory in the final was a fitting culmination to an action-packed competition.

In the semi-finals, Grey cruised to a victory over Landboudal, while Jim Fouché was given a good workout by Wilgerivier but won comfortably in the end.

Sentraal claimed the Shield, outplaying HTS Louis Botha 24-0 in the final, while Landboudal picked themselves up from their Cup semi-final loss and defeated Wilgeriver 24-5 in the Plate final, which was the exact score by which JF had beaten them in the semis.

Grey hoisted the u15 trophy but was made to put in a couple of hard shifts by Witteberg and Sentraal in the semi-finals and final respectively.

The Bloem boys beat the Bethlehem boys 24-14 in the first semi, while Sentraal won 29-10 in the second semi-final against Wilgerivier. Grey, then, grabbed the title with a 24-10 victory.

Wilgerivier triumphed in the Plate final, handing Witteberg a 20-5 loss. The Bowl went to Landboudal, who scored a decisive 31-5 win over HTS Louis Botha.

Hoërskool Montana‘s rugby fields rocked with lung-busting action on the weekend as the Northern Gauteng region’s top u17 and u15 schools’ teams battled it out for the High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota, titles.

After the final whistle had sounded, it was Menlopark who was crowned the u17 champion, while Affies laid claim to the u15 honours.

    U17 Competition

Affies, as always, were going to be in the mix, but there was a hint of vulnerability in their challenge when they scraped a narrow 21-17 win over Overkruin in their last Pool A match. Still, they won all three of their matches.

Garsfontein ran wild in Pool B, while Zwartkop was almost as dominant in topping Pool C. Montana made the home supporters happy by finishing in first place in Pool D, while Menlopark was extended by Pretoria Boys High in Pool E, winning by just seven points, but they shone in a 36-0 dismantling of Affies B.

In the only meeting of pool winners in the quarterfinals, Garsfontein overran Montana 42-7, while Affies came away with a tough 33-24 win over Affies B in their clash. Menlopark blanked Zayo in their easy victory, while Zwartkop took down Wilgers.

The runaway train that was Garsfontein was brought to a sudden stop in the semi-finals, with Menlopark recording a 21-7 win. Affies, meanwhile, cruised to a 38-7 win over Zwartkop.

The Wit Bulle were, then, in for a rude shock in the final, where Menlopark handled them comfortably, winning 28-5.

Zwartkop held off Garsfontein to claim bronze, while the Bowl went to Oos Moot, who comfortably beat Erasmus by 21 points. Affies B edged out Montana 24-21 in a tight Plate final, while Wonderboom triumphed 12-7 over Pretoria Boys High in the Shield final.

    U15 Competition

In the u15 competition, Affies powered their way to the top of the Pool A standings, although Oos Moot gave them a tough workout, with Affies battling their way to a 31-19 win in that clash.

Garsfontein handed Waterkloof a 15-7 loss in the key match in Pool B and didn’t concede a point in their other two pool games. In Pool C, Zwartkop got the better of their rivals, Eldoraigne, in the clash that decided first place, while Montana edged out Centurion 12-7 and won their other Pool D fixtures comfortably to lead the way.

It came down to Menlopark and Pretoria Boys High in Pool E and Menlo handled the assignment with assurance, racing to a 38-14 win over Boys High.

As had happened in the u17 competition, Montana, after winning their pool, was eliminated in the only game between pool winners in the last eight, with Menlopark scoring a 33-5 win. Affies defeated their old rivals, Pretoria Boys High, 39-10, while Garsfontein scored a tight seven-point win over Oos Moot. Zwartkop cruised to a 26-5 victory over Centurion.

An Affies vs Menlopark final was set up after both won in the semi-finals, with Menlo getting past Garsfontein 26-21, while Affies had a more comfortable win, beating Zwartkop 33-14.

With the title on the line, Affies brought their A-game and claimed the silverware with a 28-7 victory. Garsfontein had to settle for the bronze, after a solid win over Zwartkop.

In a closely-contested Bowl final, Wilgers sneaked a 19-18 win over Curro Hazeldean. Oos Moot hoisted the Plate following a 36-21 defeat of Pretoria Boys High, and Waterkloof won 33-21 against Eldoraigne to capture the Shield.

  • Durbanville are Cape Schools Sevens u17 champs, Paul Roos crowned u15 winners

    U17 Competition

Hoërskool Durbanville played the role of spoiler, preventing Hugenote from recording a fairytale win at home by romping to a 42-5 victory over the hosts in the Cup final of the Cape Schools Sevens, on another weekend of high-octane High Schools Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota, action.

In the key result of Saturday’s event, Durbies knocked over the favourites, Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG), in the semi-finals, scoring a narrow 19-17 win. Hugenote, meanwhile, accounted for Milnerton, securing their spot in the final with a 24-19 victory.

Durbanville exited Pool B, arguably the most wide-open of the four groups, ahead of Worcester Gim and the Forward Foundation. Paul Roos topped Pool A, Hugenote finished at the head of Pool C, and Milnerton ruled Pool C.

The Bowl title went the way of the Forward Foundation, who beat Augsburg Landbou by eight points in a 60-point thriller. Parel Vallei downed Worcester Gim 12-7 in a tight Plate final before Durbanville powered their way to the Cup honours.

    U15 Competition

In the u15 competition, Paul Roos lived up to their favourites’ tag by lifting the title.

Their challenge began with a surprisingly tough 22-14 victory over Langenhoven Gim, but that was a scoreline that they would enjoy later when they beat Boland Landbou in the Cup final by the same score.

PRG conceded points in only one other game, winning their Cup semi-final against Hugenote 37-15.

Boland Landbou, meanwhile, charged through their group assignments, putting up 94 points in their wins over Augsburg Landbou and Worcester Gim. They convincingly dealt with Milnerton in the quarterfinals, winning by 31 points, but their semi-final against Porterville was an arm wrestle, with the farmers taking it 15-7.

The Forward Foundation, edged out by only three points by Durbanville for second place in Pool D, turned their fortunes around in the Bowl playoffs, blanking Lagenhoven Gim and Augsburg Landbou to win the Bowl.

Durbanville missed out on winning Pool D after falling 20-28 to Hugenote in the key pool contest, which thrust Durbies into a quarterfinals clash with Paul Roos. The Stellenbosch boys cruised to a 38-0 victory. Durbanville recovered well, though, beating Boland Landbou 2 28-17 and, then, Worcester Gim 50-0 to claim the Plate.

  • Monument rules at home in High School Sevens Series

Joy for Monument as they lift the u17 trophy in their home event of the High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota.

Monument made full use of their home-ground advantage as both their u17 and u15 teams won the High School Sevens, proudly presented by Toyota tournaments in Krugersdorp on Saturday.

It was one-way traffic in the u17 competition as the Wit Bulle ran riot. They were barely tested.

In each of their first three matches, they racked up more than a half-century of points, including 80 against Eye of the Tiger. Only their fourth outing was competitive, but comfortable, with Monnas downing the Noordheuwel Invitation side 28-10.

Jeppe was brushed aside 42-0 in the semi-finals and Dinamika overrun 43-5 in the title decider.

In the Plate final, Marais Viljoen surprised a deflated Jeppe outfit, and Helpmekaar secured the Bowl with a victory over Alberton.

Monument crossed often for tries as they dominated their opposition on home ground.

The u15 competition proved to be a two-horse race between the Krugersdorp powerhouses.

It wasn’t until the Cup semi-finals that Monument conceded a point. By then, they had already racked up 151 in their previous three matches. Noordheuwel, meanwhile, also boasted an unblemished defensive record. They had tallied 116 points in victories over Monument 2, Eye of the Tiger, and Dinamika.

Monnas were finally extended in the Cup semis, where they won 24-10 over Helpmekaar, while their Krugersdorp rivals, Noordheuwel, cruised to a 33-0 defeat of Dinamika.

There was little to separate the sides in the final, but Monument grabbed the trophy with a hard-fought 12-7 victory.

In the Bowl final, Monnas added another title, with Monument 2 beating Garsfontein 33-17, while Helpmekaar hoisted the Plate with a tight 17-12 win over Dinamika.

  • St Charles into Eston final after thrilling run chase

St Charles College mounted a stunning run chase to beat Westville Boys’ High by five wickets, with only three balls remaining, in their Eston One Insurance T20 Night League match on Thursday.

The victory puts Saints through to the final where they will defend the title against Maritzburg College.

Last season, an extraordinary 5/10 from Nathan Beaumont carried the Pietermaritzburg school to a four-run victory over Hilton College in the final.

It’s not often that a team comes out on top in a T20 after having a batsman score an unbeaten 100 against them off of only 53 balls, but Marcell Wellmann and his side pulled it off against Westville.

Opening batsman Kaeden McAllister was magnificent for the Griffin, blasting the Saints’ bowlers about the field, striking 11 fours and four sixes. In the last over, he smashed three of those sixes and two twos, with the last two coming off the final ball of the innings, to bring up his century.

He and Max Robertson got stuck into the St Charles bowlers early and charged their way to an opening stand of 60 in only 5.4 overs. Brendon Sunguro then had Robertson caught by Rico Honiball in the deep for 37 from 25 deliveries, with six fours and a six.

Skipper Wellman arrested the free-scoring for a brief moment, removing the dangerous Sean McGough and Nicandro Kistna for ducks, as Westville slipped to 61/3.

Kyle McGough steadied the ship with McAllister, however, with their partnership lasting a ball shy of 10 overs and producing 76 runs. Kaiyuran Naidoo, a top performer for Saints at the Fasken Time Cricket Festival, brought it to an end when he trapped McGough in front for 28. His runs had come from 30 balls and included two fours and a six.

Roxton Payne was in and out in short order as McAllister took over, helping Westville to 179/5 in their 20 overs, which left St Charles needing to score at eight runs per over to win.

Wellmann led his side’s bowling attack, picking up 2/23 in four overs of left-arm spin, while Kaiyuran Naidoo chipped in with 1/17 in three. It was a tough outing for the opening bowlers. SA Emerging u19 speedster, Rowen Rajah, went for 51 runs in his four overs, while Tristan Montile lasted only one over, which cost 15 runs.

If they were to have any chance at victory, St Charles would have to score quickly from the start. Luckily for them, they had Cian Fortmann at the top of the order, a man very capable of delivering lots of runs quickly.

The hard-hitting left-hander spent only 5.5 overs at the crease but, by the time he was out, he had already contributed 37 runs from just 21 balls, striking two sixes and five fours. Westville had lost their first wicket after 5.4 overs, with their total on 60. There wasn’t much in it.

Rico Honiball was dismissed 10 runs later for 14, but captain Wellmann, in at three, took over from Fortmann, laying into the Westville attack with relish. He received some support from Brendon Sunguro, Connor Riley, and Covhan Baaitjies, although all three didn’t progress beyond the teens. Wellmann, though, came close to seeing his team across the line.

His was the fifth and last wicket to go down, but he had made a huge impact. He matched Fortmann, also hitting two sixes and five fours, but his stay lasted 40 balls and delivered 67 runs.

It was left to Riley and Baaitjies to finish off the job. They needed 19 runs off the last two overs and it took them nine balls to score them.

The Westville bowlers came in for serious stick. Nicandro Kistna, with 0/18 off three overs, and Roxton Payne, with 1/32 in four, were the best of them. But the day belonged to St Charles, who were rewarded for their courageous approach to a daunting challenge.

    Scores

    Westville Boys’ High 179/5 (K. McAllister 100*, M. Robertson 37, K. McGough 28, M. Wellmann 2/23, K. Naidoo 1/17, C. Fortmann 1/27); St Charles College 182/5 (M. Wellmann 67, C. Fortmann 37, C. Riley 18*, A. Bulose 1/16, S. Shangase 1/16)

St Charles won by 5 wickets

  • Paul Roos the Cape Schools Sevens’ favourites

Hugenote, in Wellington, is the venue for the High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota‘s Cape Schools Sevens on Saturday. The event features 12 teams in both the u17 and u15 age groups.

Paul Roos (PRG), who made the u17 semi-finals of the Marius Schoeman Sevens last weekend in Paarl, would probably be most people’s favourite to take out the u17 and u15 titles.

Their u15 side laid waste to their pool in Paarl, but were shocked by HTS Drostdy in the Cup quarterfinals. The Donkeys went on to lose by seven points in the final against Paarl Boys’ High.

In Wellington, there’s no Paarl Gimnasium or Paarl Boys’ High to deal with and Boland Landbou will be competing in the u15 competition only, although they have two teams entered.

The hosts, Hugenote gave PRG a tough game in the playoffs of the u15 event at the Marius Schoeman Sevens, but they face a difficullt challenge against Durbanville in their pool.

In the u17 event, Pool B, featuring Durbanville, Worcester Gim, and the Forward Foundation, looks interesting. Worcester Gim’s traditional running game is particularly well suited to Sevens. Pool C, with Parel Vallei, Hugenote, and the JAG Foundation is another that appears to be up for grabs.

At the Marius Schoeman Sevens, Hugenote held Durbanville to a draw in pool action, but they were well beaten by Paul Roos. Parel Vallei, meanwhile, performed strongly, beating Porterville and Garsfontein in their pool games and losing narrowly to Stellenberg.

Monument hosts a smaller but high-quality High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota, event on Saturday in Krugersdorp.

The u17 and u15 competitions feature only 10 teams each, but there are some established rugby powers among them.

Monument, the hosts, are among the potential title contenders, as is Helpmekaar, who made the Cup semi-finals of the Heidelberg Sevens this past weekend.

Jeppe, who it should be remembered beat Monnas at Monument when the teams met in the 15-man game this season, will be a team to keep an eye on.

Noordheuwel has an Invitation side in action, so they’re a bit of an unknown.

Dinamika narrowly lost 17-19 to the eventual runners-up, Noordheuwel, in the playoffs at the Heidelberg Sevens, and beat Helpmekaar 26-24, so they should not be underestimated.

Noordheuwel has two teams in the u15 competition and their A side cruised to the u15 title in Heidelberg. Their Krugersdorp rivals, Monument, would love nothing more than to prevent Noordheuwel from making it two in a row.

Marais Viljoen, the winners of the Pionier Sevens title, finished as the runners-up in the Plate in Heidelberg. Dinamika, again, could play the role of spoiler, and the Garsfontein Invitation side is another team that could pull off an upset or two.

Blue Bulls’ best in action at Montana Sevens

hands holding rugby ball on fieldThe High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota, visits Pretoria on Friday and Saturday for two days of all-out action at the Montana Sevens, with 24 u17 teams and 24 u15 sides in action, eight of them – four u15 and four u17 – in a Small Schools group.

A number of the u17 sides will have an advantage of having recently been in action, with Affies and Garsfontein participating in the Marius Schoeman Sevens last weekend in Paarl, where Affies reached the Cup semi-finals and Garsfontein won the Bowl. They’ll be among the title favourites.

Zayo Rhinos, meanwhile, will be playing in their third High School Sevens Series event. They’ve contested the Pionier and Heidelberg Sevens previously, reaching the Cup semi-finals at Pionier and the Plate semi-finals at Heidelberg.

Pretoria Boys’ High, blessed with pace and coming from a background of exciting running rugby, could be a dark horse contender.

Waterkloof won’t be in action in the u17 tournament, but they’ll be a team to watch out for in the u15 competition, where Affies and Garsies will also be tough to beat.
