SA Under-18 coach James Winstanley has made 10 rotational changes to his starting team from the side that beat Ireland, for Tuesday’s u18 International Series clash with England at Paarl Boys’ High School.

The South Africans scored a superb victory over a strong Irish outfit on Friday at Paarl Gimnasium, and according to Winstanley, the changes are intentional so that everyone in the squad get a start in their two matches.

Only two backs are retained for the final encounter of the series with England, in Akha Boqwana (fullback) and Khutadzo Rashivhaga (right wing).

Upfront, SA u18 captain Sethu Mnebelele (hooker) earns his second start, while the talented Riley Norton also gets another start at lock, as does Reuben Kruger at No 8.

Reflecting on their victory over Ireland, Winstanley said he was immensely proud of the team’s performance: “We had to dig deep at times particularly when reduced to 13 men, which was a testament to the team’s character.

“We looked very dangerous when we had the ball, scoring five superb tries, however, we will need to improve our discipline and set pieces if we are to overcome England.

“There is a fantastic rivalry that has developed between us over the last few years, and we know that they will produce their best performance come Tuesday.”

Reacting to the numerous changes, Winstanley explained it was always part of the plan.

“We are very fortunate to have an abundance of depth in our team and so there are ten changes to the starting team for this game reflecting the strength of the squad,” said Winstanley.

The match starts at 13h30 and will be broadcast live on the SuperSport Schools platforms. Ireland and Georgia will clash in the other match, starting at 15h30.

SA u18 team to face England in Paarl:

15 Akha Boqwana, 14 Khutadzo Rashivhaga, 13 Ethan Adams, 12 Janco Purchase, 11 Cheswill Jooste, 10 Vusi Moyo, 9 Adeeb Boraine, 8 Reuben Kruger, 7 Josh Neill, 6 Torren February, 5 Riley Norton, 4 AJ Meyer, 3 Aidan Botha, 2 Sethu Mnebelele (captain), 1 Phiwayinkosi Kubheka. Replacements: 16 Mahle Sithole, 17 Oliver Reid, 18 Luqobo Makadweni, 19 JD Hattingh, 20 Alutha Wesi, 21 Ellie Meyer, 22 Yaqeen Ahmed, 23 Pieter van der Merwe, 24 Joshua Mackenzie, 25 Markus Muller, 26 Zekethelo Siyaya.

  • Strong first half gives SA u18s edge over Ireland

A dominant first-half performance laid the foundation for a well-deserved 38-26 victory for South Africa over Ireland in their first outing of the Under-18 International Series at Paarl Gimnasium in bright sunshine on Friday afternoon.

The SA u18s enjoyed a deserved 21-12 halftime lead after scoring three converted tries, while the Irish responded with two tries and a conversion during an enterprising first half before an appreciative crowd which included a sizable Irish contingent.

Both sides added two converted tries in the second half, which was characterised by a raft of replacements as both teams gave opportunities to their full squads. South Africa also landed a long-range penalty goal to ensure they finished well out of range of the powerful Irish side.

With Riley Norton (lock), who was named Player of the Match, leading the way, the hosts had the upper hand in the set pieces in the first half, with Ireland sloppy at lineout time which saw them losing three on the trot and a further four after the break.

However, the Irish had a complete reversal of fortunes in the scrum during the second half, when they made life difficult for the SA pack, especially after sending their replacement forwards onto the park.

Ireland who got off to the perfect start when Connor Magee (hooker) scored in the right-hand corner from a well-executed lineout maul to put them 5-0 ahead.

Five minutes later, from a stolen lineout and a clever kick ahead into the Irish 22, the SA U18s’ strong running centre Markus Muller went in under the posts for the hosts’ opening try, converted by flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed.

Shortly afterwards, South Africa went further ahead when the lively Ahmed was the architect of the second try, with a lovely break from a set piece to put Zekhethelo Siyaya (left wing) over under the uprights to stretch the hosts’ lead to 14-5.

Jack Deegan (centre) then reduced the deficit for the Irish with a converted try, but the South Africans didn’t waste time to cross for their third try – and Siyaya’s second – when the speedster gathered a clever grubber from the impressive Muller. Ahmed added the extras to stretch the SA advantage to 21-12 at the break.

With SA punished with two yellow cards and their replacements struggling to make an impact upfront, the Irish gained the ascendancy upfront, and Magee barged his way over for his second try, which was also converted to make it a two-point game.

But the SA u18 pack worked hard to stay in the fight, and captain Sethu Mnebelele capped a good performance with a try to edge his side 28-19 ahead with more than half of the second stanza remaining.

They then turned on the style when exciting outside back replacement Cheswill Jooste outstripped the defence on the left flank for another converted try, their fifth of the afternoon which was converted by fullback Akahluwa Boqwana.

Replacement back Vusi Moyo then landed a long-range penalty goal to take the game away from the Irish at 38-19 and despite a fourth Irish try, it was a deserved win for the SA U18s in their first outing of the tournament.

Earlier on Friday, England had to draw on all their reserves and produced a second-half masterclass as they wiped out a 20-10 deficit at the break to defeat a gritty Georgia 27-20 for their first win of the series.

The U18 International Series concludes next Tuesday when South Africa faces England and Ireland take on Georgia at Paarl Boys’ High’s Brug Street fields.

    Scorers:

South Africa 38 (21) – Tries: Zekhethelo Siyaya (2), Markus Muller, Sethu Mnebelele, Cheswill Jooste. Conversions: Yaqeen Ahmed (3), Aka Boqwana (2). Penalty: Vusi Moyo. Ireland 26 (12) – Tries: Conor Magee (2), Jack Deegan, Jamie Conway. Conversions: Conor O’Shaughnessy (2), Tom Wood.

  • SA u18 ‘A’ coach grateful for opportunity against Georgia

They only played one game in the Under 18 International Rugby Series, against Georgia at Stellenberg High School on Monday, but South Africa u18 ‘A’ coach Heinrich Martin was grateful and pleased his team took their opportunities in their match, which ended in a 20-3 triumph for the hosts.

The tragic circumstances of last week, when a French player was swept out to sea and the team deciding to return home, resulted in a revision of the fixtures, with only one game for the SA u18 ‘A’ side against Georgia, while the SA u18s will only play two matches.

The SA U18 ‘A’ team, playing with a strong breeze in their favour in the second half, scored two converted tries after the break to take the game away from the gritty Georgians.

Georgia defended well in the first half, stopping the South Africans in their tracks with good tackles and aggression at the breakdown. Afterwards, Martin said he was pleased by the way his players responded to the challenge, especially in the second period of a very competitive encounter.

“We expected a physical battle from the Georgians because they are known to be physical,” said Martin, who is the Director of Rugby at Milnerton High School in Cape Town.

“I was happy with the way we scrummed against them and our maul was also good, especially towards the end of the first half.

“We started to apply more pressure because we realised that they were struggling to keep up with the pace, and so the plan was to hit them through the middle and then to go around them. It worked nicely and opened the space for us.

“We pride ourselves on our scrums and mauls and we worked on those aspects when we were together for a week in Johannesburg after the Under-18 Craven Week.”

Martin commended the players for their efforts: “We played against a quality Georgian side who made us fight right until the end for a good victory. Our task is to mould these boys into future Junior Springboks, and I think they showed plenty of encouragement.”

In Monday’s opening fixture, Ireland kicked off the tournament with an impressive 42-28 win over England, this after the Irish led 21-7 at halftime.

The second round takes place at Paarl Gimnasium on Friday when Georgia and England meet in the first fixture at 13h30, followed by the clash between the SA U18s and Ireland at 15h30. Tickets are available for R20 by clicking here.

The South Africa Under-18 ‘A’ side started the u18 International Series on a high note for the host nation as they beat Georgia by 20-3 thanks to a strong second-half performance at Stellenberg High School field in Cape Town on Monday afternoon.

The South Africans took a slender 6-3 advantage into the break after flyhalf Luan Giliomee slotted two mid-range penalty goals after his Georgian counterpart, Gigi Sirbiladze, gave his side a 3-0 lead when the SA side was penalised for offside.

The first half was an even affair, with the Georgians showing plenty of determination on defence in response to several South African attacks.

The European team had the upper hand at the breakdown, slowing the ball enough, or spoiling it on several occasions, to blunt a number of promising SA attacks. The hosts showed plenty of enterprise with ball in hand, but try as they might, they couldn’t bridge the stubborn Georgian defence.

Playing with a strong breeze in their favour in the second half, the SA ‘A’ side made the most of their opportunities to score two converted tries to take the game away from the gritty Georgians.

After a sustained period of pressure, SA fullback Dylan Miller went over to stretch their lead to 13-3. With the generous breeze in their favour and the replacement forwards adding fresh aggression, the South Africans dominated the rest of the game, earning a few penalties at scrum time and going close to scoring on a number of occasions.

They eventually breached the Georgian line for a second time when replacement outside back Brooklyn Newman crossed over for another converted try to take the final score to 20-3.

Earlier in the day, Ireland kicked off the tournament with an impressive 42-28 win over England, this after the Irish led 21-7 at halftime.

The second round takes place at Paarl Gimnasium on Friday when Georgia and England meet in the first fixture at 13h30, followed by the clash between the SA U18s and Ireland at 15h30.

    Scorers:

South Africa ‘A’ 20 (6) – Tries: Dylan Miller, Brooklyn Newman. Conversions: Luan Giliomee (2). Penalties: Giliomee (2). Georgia 3 (3) – Penalty: Gigi Sirbiladze.

The French u18 team have decided to withdraw from the U18 International Series following the tragic event earlier this week when one of their players, Medhi Narjissi, was swept out to sea during a recovery session at Cape Point.

The annual u18 series in South Africa will start on Monday in Cape Town. The French squad returned home on Friday evening.

The schedule for the series has been revised following the withdrawal of France, with each round consisting of two matches which ensures that none of the remaining travelling teams’ fixtures are affected.

The first round kicks off at Stellenberg High School in Cape Town on Monday, with the SA U18 clash with France cancelled, while the SA u18 ‘A’ team’s three matches were reduced to one, against Georgia.

Georgia, who were originally scheduled to play the SA U18 ‘A’-side twice and France once, will now face England in their second match on Friday 16 August, and they will play Ireland on Tuesday, 20 August on the last of the three match days.

Mr Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union, earlier this week sent a message of condolences to the Narjissi family and the French rugby community following the tragic events a few days ago.

Revised fixtures for the Under-18 International Series:

    Monday, 12 August (Stellenberg HS)

  • England u18 name team to face Ireland

Head coach Jonathan Pendlebury and assistant coach Will Parkin have named their U18 Men’s matchday squad for the opening International Series encounter with Ireland.

England faces Ireland at Stellenberg High School on Monday 12 August at 12:30 BST, with the fixture being streamed live on SuperSport Schools.

Patrick Hogg has been confirmed as tour captain and will lead the side out from blindside flanker next week. The Durham School student, also capable in the second row, has four U18 caps and made seven appearances for Newcastle Falcons’ U18 side in 2023/24.

Eight of the starting XV will win their first competitive appearances for their country, with the potential for 10 more debutants off the replacements bench for Pendlebury’s group. Hogg, Jonno Balding, Tom Dye, Fraser Rawlins and James Linegar, as well as Connor Treacey, Elliot Williams and Felix Champain are the previously-capped touring members.

Treacey replaces George Marsh in the touring party, slotting in at No. 8 for Matchday 1. The former u18 captain has seven u18 caps, lifted the u18 Academy League title with Bath Rugby and was recently announced as part of his club’s academy intake.
England continue with fixtures against France and South Africa, with Georgia and a South Africa A side incorporated into other 2024 International Series fixtures.

Jonathan Pendlebury said: “Coming off the back of a productive few camp meetings at the Hazelwood Centre, our approach is beginning to take shape with our young group which has been incredibly pleasing.

“We’re seeking to continue the relentless attitude that has been the cornerstone of our approach to getting better since our first meeting as an u17 squad at Hartpury College last season. It’s been a great privilege to see the development of the boys and their willingness to get going has been impressive thus far.

“The players have taken a lot of inspiration from the u20 Men’s group and want to make their own mark on a tour. We as a coaching group want to see our principles of Exploration and Speed implemented from minute one on Monday through the following 10 days, and most importantly, we want our boys to return home better rugby players and people as a result of these experiences.”

  • SA Rugby sends condolences to family, French rugby

SA Rugby has sent condolences and offered support to French rugby and the family of 17-year-old player Medhi Narjissi, who was swept out to sea during a water recovery session at Cape Point on Wednesday.

The young player was a member of the French Under-18 team which is in South Africa to contest a tournament with the hosts, England, Ireland and Georgia. Narjissi was on an outing with the squad when the incident occurred.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and the French rugby community for the tragic loss of Medhi,” said Mr Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union.

“We cannot begin to comprehend the sorrow the family must be feeling at this moment. Please know that the entire rugby fraternity stands with you in mourning the loss of Medhi. This devastating news has been felt deeply across the rugby community here in South Africa and around the world.”

Mr Alexander said that SA Rugby had offered every support it could to the French team and Mehdi’s family, who are en route to South Africa.

The French Rugby Federation announced on Wednesday that Mehdi was swept away by a wave as he and his team-mates were swimming at the Cape of Good Hope at around 16h00.

Emergency services were mobilised to conduct a search and rescue operation without success throughout Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The impact on the scheduling of the tournament – which kicks off at Stellenberg High School in Cape Town on Monday – has not been determined.

Two South African Under-18 teams and their age-group counterparts from England, France, Ireland and Georgia will face off in Cape Town and Paarl next month, with the annual u18 International Series confirmed by SA Rugby on Thursday.

The SA Under-18 team and the next-best ‘A’ side, as well as the four visitors from Europe, will play in a three-round competition on 12, 16 and 20 August.

Similar to past editions, the matches will be hosted at school venues, with Stellenberg High School in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, as well as Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys High School hosting the U18 teams on triple-header match days.

Dave Wessels, General Manager of High Performance at SA Rugby, described the forthcoming U18 series as a key component in the development of the country’s top age-group players.

“The international coaches I spoke to during the recent World Rugby U20 Championship all described the importance of coming over here to test their young players in a proper international competition,” said Wessels.

“The annual U18 series forms an integral part of our elite player development pipeline and is very important in the development and growth of our own young players.

“Apart from rewarding the current group of U18s with an incredible opportunity, it can be considered as the starting point for the new identification cycle of our next group of Junior Springboks and franchise players.

“The competition also gives an opportunity to a wide range of coaches and staff who get the opportunity to test themselves at a higher level. These staff have all made significant contributions to our EPD (Elite Player Development) programme through their unions, schools and clubs, and will be supported by experienced SA Rugby staff.”

The squads and management teams for the two SA U18 sides will be announced in due course.
