Rondebosch Boys’ High vs Milnerton High (20-over)

In Tuesday’s second round of the Switch Schools SA20 – Volume 2, Milnerton High won the toss and chose to field first at Rondebosch Boys’ High.

The hosts put up a solid total, which they defended with top-tier bowling to set themselves up for a 91-run victory.

Opener Eli Aufrichtig smashed four fours and a six for his 71 runs off 55 balls. Down the middle order, Raa’id Davids was the next best ‘Bosch batsman, hitting an undefeated 25 off 15.

Tristan Logie was the best bowler for the visitors, claiming figures of 2/34 in four overs. Rondebosch secured a total of 147/6 after 20 overs.

In at three, Michael Bloemetjie produced 26 off 35, which was the best effort that any Millies batsman could muster against a dangerous home bowling attack.

Aufrichtig was also brilliant with the ball, dispatching 2/2 in two overs. Schalk Fourie was another player on song, cleaning out 2/7 in his two overs. Milnerton lost all 10 wickets for 56 runs in 18.3 overs.

Hoërskool Fichardtpark vs St. Andrew’s School (20-over)

In their third round encounter of the Switch Schools SA20, St. Andrew’s School won the toss and opted to bat first at Hoërskool Fichardtpark.

The Saints were excellent with both bat and ball to win the match by 10 wickets.

Nevin Olivier’s two fours in his 14 runs off 14 balls provided the most entertaining Fichardtpark innings against a merciless St. Andrew’s bowling attack. Having bowled four overs each, Schalk van Rensburg took 3/13, Ryle Beckmann 2/11, and Erhard Barens 2/17. With their collected efforts, the hosts were dismissed for 66.

Openers Dean Katzin and Jonathan Hickley struck an unbeaten 68-run partnership to win the match in 5.5 overs. Katzin thumped six fours for his unbeaten 33 off 23, while Hickley cracked four fours and a six for his 28 off 12 not out.

Saints’ top order batsman, FG Botha, wasn’t afforded the opportunity to display his skills with the bat, but was a workhorse in the field on his 100th cap for St. Andrew’s. He is only the seventh player in seven years to achieve this milestone under coach AJ van Wyk.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Rondebosch Boys’ High 147/6 (Eli Aufrichtig 71, Raa’id Davids 25*; Tristan Logie 2/34); Milnerton High 56/10 (Michael Bloemetjie 26; Eli Aufrichtig 2/2, Schalk Fourie 2/7). Rondebosch won by 91 runs.

Hoërskool Fichardtpark 66/10 (Schalk van Rensburg 3/13, Ryle Beckman 2/11, Erhard Barends 2/17); St. Andrew’s School 68/0 (Dean Katzin 33*, Jonathan Hickley 28*). St. Andrew’s won by 10 wickets.

Rondebosch Boys’ High vs SACS (50-over)

Playing away, on Sunday, SACS won the toss and opted to bat first in a limited overs clash with Rondebosch Boys’ High.

They fared well, but some brilliant batting from the home side lifted them to a seven-wicket victory on the ‘Bosch A Oval.

SACS opener Litha Kraai was in a belligerent mood, smashing 10 fours and three sixes while making 74 off 70 balls.

Meanwhile, Abhay Kalan produced a knock of 36 off 47, while Jordan Berry hit 30 off 44, and together they shared a 77-run fifth-wicket partnership.

Daniel Cooke, Raa’id Davids and Schalk Fourie all put pressure on the visitors, picking up two wickets each, but SACS finished with a healthy 239/8 after 50 overs at the crease.

When ‘Bosch batted, all five of their batsmen scored 28 or more runs.

Janko Webb came in at four and impressed the most, bashing 11 fours and three sixes in an audacious 83 off 64.

Daniel Bosman, who headed out to the middle after the fall of the first wicket, tallied 40 off 42 and shared a 66-run second wicket partnership with Eli Aufrichtig.

There was little joy for the SACS bowlers as Rondebosch raced to 240/3 after 38.5 overs, winning the match with 67 balls to spare.

Bethlehem Voortrekker Hoërskool vs Welkom Gimnasium (50-over)

In a Free State showdown, Welkom Gimnasium won the toss at home and opted to bowl first against Bethlehem Voortrekker Hoërskool. It was a good call as the home side’s bowlers dominated, sending Voortrekker packing for only 115.

Number three batsman, Ruan Heunis made a decent 23 off 30 balls, while Jayden Strydom, batting eighth in the order, resisted with a patient and unbeaten 26 off 62.

Henru Heiberg caused the visitors problems, however, capturing 3/21 in 8.3 overs, while Aiden Hewitt knocked over 3/31 as the Bethlehem boys found the going tough.

Heiberg, then, opened the batting and delivered a 104-run first-wicket stand with Jedwin Booysen. Heiberg’s contribution was 53 off 67, while Booysen struck an unbeaten 38 off 75.

It took Welkom Gimnasium only half the allotted 50 overs to record a nine-wicket victory, cruising to the win with 150 balls to spare.

    Summarised Scorecards

SACS 239/8 (Lithe Kraai 74, Abhay Kalan 36, Jordan Berry 30, Extras 30; Daniel Cooke 2/40, Raa’id Davids 2/42, Schalk Fourie 2/51); Rondebosch Boys’ High 240/3 (Janko Webb 83*, Daniel Bosman 40, Eli Aufrichtig 35, Adeeb Levy 32*, Daniel Cooke 28, Extras 22). Rondebosch won by seven wickets.

Bethlehem Voortrekker Hoërskool 115/10 (Jayden Strydom 26, Ruan Harris 23; Henru Heiberg 3/21, Aiden Hewitt 3/31); Welkom Gimnasium 116/1 (Munro Heiberg 53, Jedwin Booysen 38, Extras 22). Welkom won by nine wickets.

  • Bishops in thrilling one-wicket win over Wynberg

Bishops in thrilling one-wicket win over Wynberg

Wynberg Boys’ High won the toss and elected to bat first when they met Bishops on the Jacques Kallis Oval in a limited overs match on Saturday.

The home side put up a solid total of 229/9 after their 50 overs, but that wasn’t quite enough, with the visitors overhauling it with only one wicket to spare.

Wynberg opener Matthew Saunders tallied an impressive 73 runs off 109 balls, cracking three fours and two sixes. In the middle order, meanwhile, Joshua Prince kept the home side’s innings together, with 41 off 61, which included four fours and two sixes.

Alex Vintcent made life difficult for the hosts, knocking over 4/31 in 10 overs, while Luke de Klerk also ruffled some feathers, picking up two wickets, but they were rather costly as he conceded 61 runs.

Bishops’ successful run chase was a team effort. While they lacked the big innings that Matthew Saunders gave Wynberg, the visitors had five batsmen score between 27 and 37 and those runs eventually added up to a victory.

In at three, James Robb-Quinlan was their top scorer, bashing three fours and two maximums in his 37 off 38. Harry Morgan, with 34 off 47, contributed the second highest score.

Raa’id Arendse, batting eighth, then hit an unbeaten 27 off 30 to drag Bishops to victory with only five balls in hand.

Ihsan Khan snared 3/48 in nine overs to ensure the Bishops’ run chase was nerve-wracking, while Harbin Smith took 2/42 and Damien Harris returned 2/47, but it was the visiting team’s day by a slim margin.

    Summarised Scorecards

Wynberg Boys’ High 229/9 (Matthew Saunders 73, Joshua Prince 41, Fawaaz Hendricks 25; Alex Vintcent 4/31, Luke de Klerk 2/61); Bishops Diocesan College 230/9 (James Robb-Quinlan 37, Harry Morgan 34, Alex Vintcent 29, Adnaan Lagadien 28, Raa’id Arendse 27*; Ihsan Khan 3/48, Harbin Smith 2/42, Damien Harris 2/47). Bishops won by one wicket.

Paul Roos Gimnasium vs Paarl Boys’ High (50-over)

On Saturday, Paarl Boys’ High won the toss at Paul Roos Gimnasium, and decided to bat first. That decision backfired, however, as they were dismissed for a modest total, which the hosts chased down with eight wickets to spare.

Opener AB Jacobs had scored a century earlier in the week and he again made the highest score for Boishaai, entertaining the spectators with five fours in his 48 runs off 52 balls.

Lower down the order, Aiden Batt weighed in with a patient 32 off 67 to help extend the Paarl outfit’s innings to 158 all out after 40 overs.

James Holm shredded the visitors’ batting, capturing 5/27 from 10 overs, while Jason Raal knocked back 3/6 in only two overs.

Paul Roos then made light work of the run chase, thanks to a 153-run second wicket partnership between Luca Plekker and Enré van Zyl. Plekker hit an undefeated 74 off 73, hammering 10 fours and two sixes, while Van Zyl tallied nine fours in his 60 off 74.

Most of the Boishaai bowlers found the going tough, but Batt threatened, picking up a tidy 1/28 in 10 overs.

In the end, though, it took Paul Roos only 25 overs to reach 161/2 and claim victory.

Boland Landbou vs Milnerton High (20-over)

In a Friday afternoon friendly 20-over fixture, Boland Landbou opted to bat first when they hosted Milnerton High. The Farmers bashed a big total and bowled well to defend it with ease, winning the match by 64 runs.

The home side’s Francois Prins showed why he bats third in the order by blasting five fours and seven sixes in an action-packed 92 runs off 50 deliveries. Then, Kobus Conradie, the sixth man in, didn’t take any sighters. He went after the Milnerton bowlers from ball one, cracking two fours and two sixes in an unbeaten 30 off 13.

Bradley Barnes was the best of the Millies‘ bowlers, claiming 2/36 from four overs as Boland Landbou tallied 181/5.

Facing a stiff challenge, Milnerton’s openers, Tristan Logie and Daniel Bloemetjie, to their credit, put up a good fight. Logie knocked a steady 31 off 33, striking three fours, while Bloemetjie thumped a four and two sixes in a defiant 20 off 11.

Gunther Schmidt, though, delivered the goods with the ball, snaring 3/19 in four overs. Conradie needed only 11 balls for his 2/2, while Troy Davis claimed 2/28 in four overs as Milnerton’s innings was ended with one ball remaining for 117.

    Summarised Scorecards

Paarl Boys’ High 158/10 (AB Jacobs 48, Aiden Batt 32; James Holm 5/27, Jason Raal 3/6); Paul Roos Gimnasium 161/2 (Luca Plekker 74*, Enré van Zyl 60, Extras 26). Paul Roos won by eight wickets.

Boland Landbou 181/5 (Francois Prins 92, Kobus Conradie 30*, Gideon Kotze 25; Bradley Barnes 2/36); Milnerton High 117/10 (Tristan Logie 31, Daniel Bloemetjie 20; Gunther Schmidt 3/19, Kobus Conradie 2/2, Troy Davis 2/28). Boland Landbou won by 64 runs.

Hoërskool Strand vs Hoërskool Charlie Hofmeyr (50-over)

Hoërskool Charlie Hofmeyr won the toss and selected to bat first at Hoërskool Strand on Saturday.

Strand bowled well to dismiss the visitors for a low total, but they only just chased it down, getting home with two wickets to spare.

Charlies‘ opener Driaan Louw scored a dogged 18 runs off 73 balls, while, in at six, Robert Koen mustered 18 off 40. Together, they added 35 runs for the fifth wicket.

Benjamin de Reuck picked off the tail, taking 3/20 in 7.5 overs, while Nicolae Roux and Zaylin Rule chipped in with two wickets each as the Ceres locals scrambled to 101 all out.

Had it not been for 35 extras, they would have been dismissed well shy of triple figures.

Strand needed a player to anchor their response, and they found him in Zaylin Rule, who was the third man to the crease. He tallied the highest score of the match, striking three fours in his 24 runs from 60 balls. That, along with 25 extras, was enough to see Strand to 106/8 and victory after 35.3 overs.

Ruben Giliomee made it a nervous chase for the home side, capturing 3 for 30 in 10 overs, while Martin du Plessis and Russouw Matthee picked up two wickets apiece. It was not quite enough.

Hoërskool Goudveld vs Hoërskool Jim Fouché (50-over)

Hoërskool Goudveld hosted Hoërskool Jim Fouché (JF) in Welkom on Saturday, and the Bloemfontein school turned a match that could have run for 100 overs into one that lasted only 47.2 in total.

The home side struggled against JF”s tenacious bowling, which the visitors followed with an aggressive batting effort to win by eight wickets.

Louw Fouché top-scored for Goudveld, thumping three fours as he calmly collected 20 off 53 balls, but Cobus Wilken was lethal with the ball, knocking over 4/10 in eight overs. Jareth Scott lent strong support, claiming 2/23 in six overs as Gouties mustered only 101 all out after 34 overs.

Opener Niel Wilken then set JF up for victory with a rapid and unbeaten 52 from just 39 deliveries, which included six fours and a six.

His fellow opener Benco Olivier delivered the support that Wilken needed, contributing 21 off 23, while Franco de Necker helped to see the visitors across the finishing line, blasting four fours in his unbeaten 18 off 12.

Edrich du Plessis was the only Goudveld bowler to pick up any wickets, recording 2/24 from 3.4 overs as Jim Fouché reached 103/2 in only 13.4 overs (82 balls).

    Summarised Scorecards

Hoërskool Charlie Hofmeyr 101/10 (Extras 35; Benjamin Reuck 3/20, Nicolae Roux 2/14, Zaylin Rule 2/16); Hoërskool Strand 106/8 (Extras 25, Zaylin Rule 24; Ruben Giliomee 3/30, Martin du Plessis 2/13, Russouw Matthee 2/21). Strand won by two wickets.

Hoërskool Goudveld 102/10 (Louw Fouché 20; Cobus Wilken 4/10, Jareth Scott 2/23); Hoërskool Jim Fouché 103/2 (Niel Wilken 52*, Benco Olivier 21; Edrich du Plessis 2/24). Jim Fouché won by eight wickets.

Grey College claims Schools SA20 win, Somerset College downs Strand

Grey College vs Hoërskool Sentraal (20-over)

In their third and final group stage match of the Switch Schools SA20 Volume Two, Hoërskool Sentraal won the toss and opted to bat first at Grey College on Thursday.

While the toss belonged to the visitors, the match belonged to the hosts, who dominated with both bat and ball to win by six wickets.

Wicketkeeper, opening batsman, and part-time bowler, Damian Smith, shone for Tralies, scoring 37 runs off 40 balls, which included three sixes and two fours.

Unfortunately for the visitors, his score was over three times higher than the next best achieved by a Sentraal batsman.

River Scott sent down only one over, but it brought him the best figures of any Grey College bowler, 2/2. Daniel Hayidakis claimed 2/6 in three overs, while Bergh Vorster captured 2/14 in 3.3 overs as Sentraal was bowled out for 89.

It took the hosts only 9.1 overs to chase down the victory target of 90, but Smith, once again, shone for Sentraal, snapping up 2/24 in 2.1 overs, while Erik Prinsloo bagged 2/23 in three.

While none of their top order went big, the Grey College batsmen, nonetheless, accumulated runs quickly.

Juan Maree blasted three fours and two sixes in his 27 off 15, Christian Kind struck four fours in his 21 off 13, while Daniel Hattingh smashed three fours and a maximum for his 21 off 11 as Grey finished with 93/4 after 9.1 overs.

Hoërskool Strand vs Somerset College (20-over)

In a friendly 20-over fixture, Hoërskool Strand won the toss and chose to bat first at Somerset College’s Taberer Oval, but they found the home team’s bowlers to be in top form and were dismissed for only 80 runs.

Troy Varie led the Somerset College charge, knocking back 4/20 in four overs, while Owethu Moyi and Johann Rauch chipped in with a helpful two wickets for less than 10 runs each.

Nicolae Roux’s 18 runs off 25 balls was the most resistance that any Strand batsman mustered against a cohesive Somerset bowling unit.

Somerset College’s reply wasn’t without its challenges. After nine overs, they found themselves in a spot of bother, on 39/4, after Zylin Rule had nabbed 2/6 and Benjamin de Reuck had picked up 2/26.

David de Klerk, who came in at the fall of the second wicket, took over, however, thumping three fours and a six in an unbeaten 30 off 24 balls, which drove the home side to victory.

They made it with 40 balls to spare, reaching 81/4 after 13.2 overs

    Summarised Scorecards

Hoërskool Sentraal 89/10 (Damian Smith 37; River Scott 2/2, Daniel Hattingh 2/6, Bergh Vorster 2/14); Grey College 93/4 (Juan Maree 27, Daniel Hattingh 21, Christian Kind 21; Erik Prinsloo 2/23, Damian Smith 2/24). Grey College won by six wickets.

Hoërskool Strand 80/10 (Troy Varie 4/20, Owethu Moyi 2/7, Johann Rauch 2/8); Somerset College 81/4 (David de Klerk 30*, Zylin Rule 2/6, Benjamin de Reuck 2/26). Somerset won by six wickets.

Paul Roos Gimnasium vs Paarl Gimnasium (20-over)

In a second round Switch Schools SA20 – Volume Two match on Wednesday, Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) won the toss at home and chose to field first against the visitors, Paarl Gimnasium.

Gimmies did a solid job with the bat and an even better one in the field to win the game by 31 runs.

Matt Dippenaar, their number three batsman, led the charge for the visitors, smashing eight fours and three sixes in a decisive 80 runs off only 52 balls.

The best of the Paul Roos bowlers were Dion Slabber and Morné Pauw, who picked up 2/25 and 2/26 respectively from their four overs.

After 20 overs, Paarl Gim had posted 142/7 – a good score, but not an unassailable total.

Faced with a required run rate of over seven per over, PRG opener Aiden Titus gave the home side a quick start, striking three fours and a six in a hasty 22 off 14 balls.

However, after his dismissal, the Stellenbosch school’s batsmen struggled to continue his good work. Marcus Conradie, batting fifth, came the closest, tallying 19 off 22.

Gimmies bowled tightly and kept the scoring rate down, with Derrick Groenewald and Kieran Daniels, who claimed two wickets each, leading the way.

They were also outstanding in the field, engineering three run outs as Paul Roos was all out on a Nelson, 111.

Paarl Boy’s High vs Boland Landbou (20-over)

At Paarl Boys’ High, Boland Landbou won the toss selected to field first against the home team. It proved to be a tough day all-round for the Farmers.

The Paarl Boys’ High batsmen were excellent, while their bowlers also delivered the goods, leading to a dominant 109-run victory for the hosts.

Opener AB Jacobs was talismanic for Boishaai, thumping a sensational 117 runs off 63 balls, which included 20 boundaries. He lofted nine balls for six and another 11 were dispatched for four.

His opening partner Neil Louw contributed 28 runs to a 101-run opening stand.

Kobus Conradie was Boland Landbou’s leading wicket-taker, but he was also the most expensive of their bowlers, returning 2/53 from four overs.

With Jacobs’ laying waste to the Farmers’ bowlers, Boishaai ended their 20 overs with a challenging total of 181/3.

That gave their bowlers plenty of runs to defend, and instilled confidence into their fielding effort. Aden Batt, Ullrich Drotschie and Reese Peterson all claimed two wickets each as the hosts excelled in the field, restricting Boland Landbou to just 72 all out after 13.2 overs.

Opener Gideon Kotze was the only Boland batsman who looked prepared for the Boishaai threat, cracking two fours in his 25-run tally.

    Summarised Scorecards

Paarl Gimnasium 142/7 (Matt Dippenaar 80; Dion Slabber, Morné Pauw 2/26); Paul Roos Gimnasium 111/10 (Aiden Titus 22; Derrick Groenewald 2/14, Kieran Daniels 2/26). Gimmies won by 31 runs.

Paarl Boys’ High 181/3 (AB Jacobs 117, Neil Louw 28; Kobus Conradie 2/53); Boland Landbou 72/10 (Gideon Kotze 25; Reese Peterson 2/9, Ullrich Drotschie 2/12, Aden Batt 2/21). Boishaai won by 109 runs.

Stellenberg High vs Wynberg Boys’ High (20-over)

Playing at home, Stellenberg High won the toss and opted to bat first in a second round Switch Schools SA20 – Volume Two showdown with Wynberg Boys’ High on Wednesday.

The hosts didn’t quite see out their 20 overs, with their innings coming to a halt four balls before its scheduled end for 124. Wynberg Boys’ High, then, got the job done with 10 balls to spare, winning the match by six wickets.

Michael Amoedo, who batted at three for Stellies, delivered a good knock, striking 42 runs off 30 balls, which included two fours and four sixes. Unfortunately for the hosts, his peers in the middle order didn’t stay around long enough with him to build telling partnerships.

Harbin Smith led the Wynberg attack, snapping up 3/19 in four overs, while Nicholas Stafford‘s full allotment brought him 3/21. The captain and Deputy Head Boy for 2026, Michail Tarentaal claimed 2/29.

The visitors didn’t face the stiffest of targets, but JJ Rothman caused them some difficulties, knocking back 1/14 in four overs. His economy rate of 3.5 was the best by any bowler in the match.

Wynberg’s Hugo Norambuena made his way to the crease after the fall of the first wicket and produced the highest score for his team, cracking two fours and a six in his 30 off 26 balls.

In at six, Tarentaal helped to seal the deal, weighing in with an unbeaten 25 off 22, which included two fours and a maximum.

Bishops Diocesan College vs Langa Hub (20-over)

Bishops had their way with Langa Hub in their Switch Schools SA20 clash, dismissing the Hub cheaply before galloping their way to a 10-wicket home victory.

With his return of 4/9 in two overs, Matthew Edwards brought a fiery intensity to the Bishops’ bowling lineup, averaging a wicket every three balls. Raa’id Arendse also played his part by picking up 2/2 in two overs, as Langa was skittled for only 33.

Faced with a small victory target, opener Luc Dicey went on the attack from the first ball, walloping three fours and a six in a rapid and unbeaten 23 off only nine deliveries.

It took the hosts just 11 deliveries to win, with Bishops finishing on 34 without loss.

    Summarised Scorecards

Stellenberg High 124/10 (Michael Amoedo 42; Harbin Smith 3/19, Nicholas Stafford 3/21, Michail Tarentaal 2/29); Wynberg Boys’ High 125/4 (Hugo Norambuena 30, Michail Tarentaal 25*, Qaeed Shaik 24, Joshua Prince 22*). Wynberg won by six wickets.

Langa Hub 33/10 (Matthew Edwards 4/9, Raa’id Arendse 2/2); Bishops Diocesan College 34/0 (Luc Dicey 23*). Bishops won by 10 wickets.

  • Player Profile: Michail Tarentaal (Wynberg)

    Player Profile: Michail Tarentaal (Wynberg)

Michail Tarentaal is a leader on the field and off the field at Wynberg Boys’ High. Photo: Wynberg Boys’ High on Instagram.

Wynberg Boys’ High has a reputation for producing excellent cricket players, especially all-rounders, including, in the eyes of many, the greatest all-rounder of all-time, Jacques Kallis.

Carrying on that tradition is Michail Tarentaal, who is the 1st XI’s captain, and was also elected as the school’s Deputy Head Boy for 2026.

In September, he was invited to the Cricket South Africa (CSA) U17 Camp, which showed that he has caught the eye of the national body.

He had previously made the Western Province Cricket Association’s (WPCA) U16 team in December 2023 and looked very comfortable at that level when capturing three wickets for seven runs in an abandoned match against the Dolphins.

As an all-rounder, Tarentaal is always in the action, with his bowling, batting, fielding, and leadership standing out like a grove of tall trees on an otherwise open plain.

His talent comes from humble beginnings. “My earliest memory of cricket would be playing in the driveway with my brother and dad,” he told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“I really started to love the game when I was made aware of the talent I had. I was privileged enough to get the opportunity to play at a good club, and this further grew my love for the game, as I was able to play in a positive environment.”

When asked about the first time he saw Michail Tarentaal in action, Wynberg Head Coach Pietie Loubser replied: “I remember seeing him at our new boys’ nets, already standing head and shoulders above the rest. Immediately, we could see that this kid has skills, but more importantly, he was calm and not flustered.”

It’s Tarentaal’s mental strength and focus, as much as his talent, that fuels his achievements. “Everyone has something to work on, whether it be personally or on the sports field,” he said. “On that point, I feel that we can all add one percent to our game every day. By doing this, we not only become better cricketers, but we also build character, which helps us in our everyday lives.”

When 2026 comes to an end, he’ll have his future beyond the bounds of Wynberg to consider, and he has already set his goals. “In terms of my personal life, I would like to be in the process of obtaining a bachelor’s degree, while strengthening my relationship with my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ,” he said. “In cricket, I would like to be signed by a provincial men’s team and push to make it onto the national stage.”

There’s a Lionel Messi quote which provides a fitting conclusion and a great piece of advice to those whose ambitions match those of Michail Tarentaal. It goes: “I start early and I stay late, day after day, year after year. It took me 17 years and 114 days to become an overnight success.”

In their third and final group stage match of the Switch Schools SA20 Volume Two, Hoërskool Trio won the toss at home in Kroonstad, and chose to bat first against Hoërskool Sasolburg.

It was a day for the batsmen, with 468 runs being scored in the match. However, there were only 10 runs between the teams when the match concluded in Trio’s favour.

Trio opener Zayne Williams laid into the Sasolburg bowling, striking 19 fours and three sixes in a superb 109 off of only 60 balls when the home team batted first.

His fellow opener Theuns van Rensburg joined in the party, blasting a rapid 53 off 22, which featured 11 fours and a six.

After their 86-run opening stand was brought to an end by Van Rensburg’s bails spinning through the air, Sasolburg’s bowlers found better success against Williams’ other partners.

The visitors’ captain, Liam Singleton, claimed 2/36 from four overs, recording the best figures for his side. However, despite his efforts and the dismissals of the destructive opening pair, Trio powered their way to a challenging 239/6.

Sasolburg faced a tall order, having to bat at 12 an over to reach the 240-run target. They very nearly made it.

The last Sasolburg wicket went down off the last ball of their 20 overs, with the visitors being bowled out for 229. Batting third in the order, Jan Hendrick Espach gave his side a chance at a stunning victory by blitzing his way to 80 runs off only 31 deliveries, which included cracking seven fours and six sixes.

Singleton came in at five and matched Espach’s ferocity, smashing seven fours and three sixes in a rapid 54 off 20, scoring at almost three runs a ball.

Unfortunately, for the visitors, they were unable to keep their momentum going at the back end of their innings. That had a lot to do with Dylan Young and Theuns van Rensburg.

Young claimed 3/27 in three overs and his economy rate of nine runs per over was pretty efficient when compared with most of the other bowling figures on the day. Van Rensburg was expensive, going at 14 runs per over, but he also removed three batsmen, finishing with 3/56.

    Summarised Scorecard

Hoërskool Trio 239/6 (Zayne Williams 109, Theuns van Rensburg 53, Antoine Pelser 26, Extras 23; Liam Singleton 2/36); Hoërskool Sasolburg 229/10 (Jan Hendrick Espach 80, Liam Singleton 54, Nathan Bower 23; Dylan Young 3/27, Theuns van Rensburg 3/56). Trio won by 10 runs.
