    Tygerberg High vs Settlers High

The Vikings Cricket Club, in Goodwood, Cape Town, played host to a first round match in the Switch Schools SA20 – Volume Two on Wednesday, with Settlers High and Tygerberg High facing off.

Bellville’s Settlers won the toss and elected to field first, and while Tygerberg was inconsistent with the bat they strung together enough strong moments to carry them to a 41-run victory.

Opener Lance de Mink was the most impressive of the Parow school’s batting lineup, knocking 33 runs off 27 balls, five of which he dispatched for four.

Tygerberg struggled to build momentum, and Braden Korasie claimed 2/15 in three overs, while Zack van Niekerk collected 2/22 in four overs, but Settlers let themselves down badly by conceding 37 extras, 35 of which were from wides.

Thanks to that big contribution, Tygerberg was able to post 127/9 from their 20 overs.

In the Settlers’ run chase, Korasie, their leading bowler, also led the side’s batting effort, striking four fours and a six in his hasty 31 off 20 deliveries. Unfortunately for him, he lacked support, with no other batsmen reaching double figures.

Tygerberg also struggled with wides and extras, sending down 15 and giving up 25 extras in total, but they had more than enough in hand when the 20 overs were up, with Settlers on 86/7.

Noah Kermis was the pick of the bowlers, snapping up 2/9 in four overs, while Sebastian Cook claimed 2/12 in four, and Cayden Louw took 2/17.

    Milnerton High vs Parklands College

On Wednesday, Milnerton High chose to bowl first on the Milnerton Oval when the toss went their way in their Switch Schools SA20 match against Parklands College.

That call didn’t pay off, though, as Ethan Randall and Joshua Neil piled on 65 runs for the first wicket, with Randall scoring 45 off 41, including nine fours. Neil hit an unbeaten 40 off 46, holding down one end for his entire innings, which also featured two fours and a six.

Blaine Fisher, who replaced Ethan Randall in the middle, weighed in with a rapid 39 off 25, cracking five fours and a maximum, while he and Neil added 51 runs for the second wicket.

After 20 overs, Parklands College had made it to a decent looking 152/2.

Millies’ bowling efforts weren’t particularly fruitful, but Ryan Gretschel‘s 1/22 in four overs stood out as he kept a lid on the Parklands College scoring.

On the other hand, the hosts’ batting produced exciting results. From the start of Milnerton’s innings, opener Daniel Bloemetjie made his intentions clear, sending nine balls to the boundary as he hurried along to 55 off 46. After his departure, though, Milnerton’s run rate dropped until Ryan Trollip and Ryan Gretschel came to the rescue.

With good running between the wickets, Trollip hit an unbeaten 19 off 14 and Gretschel added 17 off 12 to see their team to a six-wicket victory with 14 balls to spare. Only seven of the 27 balls they faced were dot balls. Before they got together, the Millies’ innings included 40 dots from 79 balls.

Wynberg edges out Pretoria Boys High by only two runs

Wynberg Boys’ High faced Pretoria Boys High in the South African capital city over 20 overs on Wednesday in preparation for the Wildeklawer T20, which starts on Thursday.

The hosts won the toss on Hofmeyr Oval and elected to field first.

Wynberg responded with a solid batting display, but it was the tenacity of their bowling attack which won them the match by a mere two runs.

Muhammad Ameen Schroeder and Storme van Rooyen shared an opening partnership of 49 runs to give the Cape Town school a solid start. Both faced 31 deliveries, with Schroeder scoring 24 runs and Van Rooyen contributing 35.

However, after the opening pair, only Joshua Prince and Michail Tarentaal, batting third and fourth in the order, reached double figures.

Prince’s innings was a quickfire 16 off nine, with two fours, while Tarentaal smashed the only six of the innings, which also included three fours, as he weighed in with 32 off 20.

At one point, the southern suburbs outfit looked comfortable at 90/3, but they collapsed to 127/8, eventually going on to tally 139/8 after their 20 overs.

Jaydon Knott-Craig’s 3/19 in four overs led the Pretoria Boys High attack, with all three of his victims being top order batsmen, which allowed his fellow bowlers to get stuck into the remaining batsmen.

Needing seven runs an over to win, opening batsmen, Ethan Nel and Timothy Gordon, gave Boys High a similar start to their Wynberg counterparts, putting up 51 runs for the first wicket, Nel knocked 25 off 21, with three fours, while Gordon hit 42 off 33, thumping two sixes and three fours.

Later in the innings, Louis Kruyshaar scored an unbeaten 22 off 29, but Wynberg held on for a tight victory. Fawaaz Hendricks was the most clinical of their bowlers, returning a tidy 2/20 in four overs.

In the end, the hosts were restricted to 137/5 after their 20 overs, with both of their last two batsmen facing over 20 deliveries but being limited to strike rates under 80.

Pretoria Boys High will look back on the game and wonder, with so many wickets in hand, whether or not they could have gone harder at the Wynberg bowlers earlier in their innings.

Bishops Diocesan College vs Fairmont High School

In the first round of the Switch Schools SA20 – Volume Two in the Western Cape, the visiting Fairmont High won the toss on the Frank Reid Oval on Wednesday and elected to field first.

Bishops donned their armour and proceeded to deliver an entertaining batting performance, which propelled them to an astounding 141-run victory after an excellent performance in the field.

Opener Harry Morgan scored 34 runs off 24 balls, dispatching seven deliveries to the boundary. In at three, Kyle Stirk contributed a solid 38 off 28, cracking two fours and three sixes along the way.

Litha Mbiko and Alex Vintcent, in the middle order, further fuelled the fire with an unbeaten 95-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Mbiko hit a rapid 56 off 37, walloping four fours and three maximums, while Vintcent slammed 35 off 22, with three fours and two sixes.

After 20 overs, the hosts had put up a strong total of 179/4. Bryce Scott shone for Fairmont, capturing 2/17 from his four overs. With his team’s bowlers going at almost nine runs per over, it was a top effort.

Unfortunately for Fairmont, Bishops’ best bowler on the day, Raa’id Arendse, was even more effective and decimated the visitors’ batting, knocking over 5/10 in four overs, which included most of the threats at the top and in the middle order.

Only one batsman, Ross Smorenberg made it beyond single figures. He struck a four and a six in chipping in with 15 off 17 deliveries. It wasn’t much to write home about, but in an innings of 38 all out it caught the eye.

    Hoërskool Bellville vs SACS

In another first round Switch Schools SA20 – Volume Two match, SACS won the toss on Hoërskool Bellville’s A Oval and decided to bat first. They duly delivered a strong innings and followed up with a good bowling performance to record an emphatic 94-run win.

Abhay Kalan faced the first ball of the match and stuck around for the full 20 overs, playing the anchor role. He finished with 44 off 44, with six fours. His patient innings, which kept rotating the strike, also allowed the other batsmen to play their shots.

When Mickey Watson entered the fray after the fall of the third wicket, he gave the innings a timely boost, cracking eight fours and three sixes in an unbeaten and electric 67 from 37 balls.

He and Kalan shared an unbeaten 90-run partnership for the fourth wicket to help the Newlands outfit to 174/3.

Ezra Williams kept the SACS’ batsmen in check, returning a neat 1/16 from four overs.

When they took to the crease, Bellville found the going tough. Only Rheeder Heath, Edmund Klue and Lehano van der Westhuyzen reached double figures, scoring 17, 14 and 14 respectively.

Van Der Westhuyzen was one of just two Bellville batsmen to attain a strike rate in the triple digits, scoring his 14 runs off 12 deliveries, while Hein Slabbert, batting at nine, made eight off seven.

Vaughn van den Berg was at the heart of the SACS bowling attack, knocking back 4/16 in four overs, while Saaed Conrad snared 2/22 from is four overs.

Ronan Meintjies is a name one usually associates with wicket-taking. However, it was his economy that impressed more as he picked up a wicket without conceding a run from two overs.

Bellville completed their 20 overs on 80/9.

    SCORES

Bishops Diocesan College 179/4 (Litha Mbiko 56*, Kyle Stirk 38, Harry Morgan 34, Alex Vintcent 35*; Bryce Scott 2/17); Fairmont High School 38/10 (Raa’id Arendse 5/10, Thaafier Japtha 2/0, Daniel Perold 2/8).

    Bishops won by 141 runs.

SACS 174/3 (Mickey Watson 67*, Abhay Kalan 44*, Litha Kraai 23, Extras 20); Bellville 80/9 (Vaughn van den Berg 4/16, Saeed Conrad 2/22).

Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) welcomed Hermanus High to Stellenbosch on Monday for a T20 clash ahead of PRG’s participation in the Wildeklawer T20, from Thursday.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat first. Thanks to some explosive hitting, they put up a mammoth total of 247/3 and then comfortably cruised to a 174-run victory by dismissing the visitors well before they’d reached three figures.

Paul Roos opener Aiden Titus was at it from the first ball, scoring at over two runs per ball in an electric 63 runs off 31 deliveries, which included eight fours and two sixes.

Titus, though, saw a couple of his top order teammates depart cheaply, but Nathan van den Berg and James Holm then set the field alight with a rollicking unbroken partnership of 161 off only 76 balls.

Van den Berg’s contribution was 79 off 38, with four fours and five maximums, while Holm smashed 78 off 40, with five fours and five sixes.

Only Unako Mazuthu enjoyed success with the ball, picking up 2/31 in four overs. His economy rate was almost four runs per over better than the next-best Hermanus bowler. The only other Paul Roos wicket to go down was by way of a run out.

When the visitors batted, only middle order batsman, Lukas Calitz, reached double figures. He struck two fours and a six in quickfire 22 off 17, but the PRG bowlers were well on top.

Jason Raal ripped through the Hermanus batting order, knocking over 4/11 in 2.5 overs, while Morné Pauw took 3/11 in four, and Noah Appolis 3/6, also from four.

After 17.5 overs, Hermanus was all out for 73/10.

Rondebosch Boys’ High was on the road at Paarl Gimnasium on Tuesday for a 40-over clash between two of the Western Cape’s leading 1st XIs. After a solid batting performance, ‘Bosch was able to hold off Gim and record a 24-run victory.

Opener Eli Aufrichtig provided a sound foundation off of which the rest of the Rondebosch batsmen could build, facing 58 balls for a useful 38 runs.

His fellow opener Daniel Cooke didn’t last long, going out for a duck, but Janko Webb replaced him and hit 26 off 29, which left the visitors on 50/2 when Noah Heath made his way to the crease.

While Heath batted conservatively, hitting 52 off 74 balls, his was an invaluable contribution, the highest score of the match, which helped to steer Rondebosch to 201/9.

Credit to Paarl Gim, they made ‘Bosch work hard for their total, conceding only 10 fours and two sixes.

Eric Groeneveld was a bit on the expensive side, but he removed three batsmen, claiming 3/40 in six overs. Louis Koen sent down eight and took 2/42, while De Waal Vivier also picked up 2/42, but in seven overs.

Paarl Gim’s run chase got off to a composed and sound start, with Dirk Hugo and Matt Dippenaar putting on 66 for the first wicket. Hugo struck two fours and two sixes in his 37 off 47, while Dippenaar was more subdued, weighing in with 25 off 53.

Later, De Waal Vivier and Louis Koen shared a 49-run, sixth wicket partnership. Koen unleashed some big shots, smashing three sixes in his 20 off 20, while Vivier chipped in with a useful 35 off 46, which included three fours.

However, that wasn’t enough as Paarl Gim was limited to 177 all out.

Schalk Fourie was on the money for the Rondebosch bowling attack, capturing 3/26 in 5.5 overs. In six overs, Raaid Davids picked up 2/21, while Ethan De Heer Kloots claimed 2/23.

It was De Heer Kloots’ first official game for the first team. The talented all-rounder, who has been a standout performer as he has moved up the age groups, is certainly a player on whom to keep an eye.

Maritzburg College vs Paarl Boys’ High (20-over)

Paarl Boys’ High won the toss on Goldstone’s and elected to field first in their T20 against Maritzburg College on Tuesday, the final day of the Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week.

College, though, made a strong start and kept riding that excellent platform all the way to 168/3. In the end, they won by 18 runs.

Captain, Daniel Nadasan, struck four fours in his 33 off 27 balls, while his fellow opener, Kyle de Bruyn, improved on that strong contribution, walloping seven fours and a six on his way to 56 off 46. Together, they achieved a 79-run opening stand.

In at number three, Sphamandla Dzanibe kept the momentum going, scoring an unbeaten 55 off 41.

The Paarl bowlers were made to toil, with Aden Batt and Pieter Gildenhuis, the best of them, returning matching figures of 1/20 from three overs.

While Boishaai‘s run chase came up short, it wasn’t because of Gideon du Toit. He got on top of the College bowlers, smashing six fours and a six in a fighting 63 not out from only 34 balls.

Opener Christo Muller delivered 31 off 26 but his run out left the visitors wobbling on 45/3.

Left-arm paceman Dzanibe showed off his all-round ability by knocking over 4/25 in four overs, while Karl Dedekind collected 2/13 in two as Paarl Boys High ended on 150/7.

Pretoria Boys High vs Paarl Gimnasium (20-over)

At Collegians, Pretoria Boys High captain Tim Gordon decided to bat first after the toss went his way. Thanks to a terrific opening stand, his side put up a strong 171/3 against Paarl Gimnasium.

Opener Ethan Nel led from the front, scoring an impressive 75 off 69, which included seven fours. Gordon, who usually bats third in the order, opened with Nel and provided Boys High with a big boost by bashing four sixes and six fours in a rapid 68 off 34 balls.

Together, the pair provided the highlight of the match, a 130-run partnership.

Gimmies were made to toil as Boys High scored at 8.55 runs per over. Wian Munnik, with 0/22 from four overs, was their most economical bowler.

Their run chase was led by the in-form Charles King, who was, again, superb. He hammered six fours and a six in an unbeaten 72 from only 49 deliveries, while Munnik weighed in with 26 at the top of the order.

Liam Brooker, though, made a serious impact for Pretoria Boys High, removing three dangermen – Munnik, Derrick Groenewald and Matt Dippenaar – to finish with 3/22 from four overs.

Paarl Gim’s run pursuit was undermined early in their innings when they tumbled to 58/4 after nine overs. They had too much to make up but, with King leading the charge, they finished on a respectable 152/7.

Rondebosch Boys’ High vs Selborne College (50-over)

Selborne won the toss on ‘Bosch‘s Cricket A Oval and elected to bat first in their Tuesday showdown at the Cape Schools Cricket Festival. That decision led to Rondebosch Boys’ High making it a short game, which ended after only 23.1 overs, with the home team scoring an emphatic nine-wicket win.

A measure of Selborne’s struggles was the fact that Joshua Wilkie, batting at four, top scored with only 10 from 18 balls and scored the only boundary in the East London school’s miserable 27 all out.

James Kirsten and Timothy Short were as ravenous as sharks around chum, with both capturing 4/11. Kirsten’s haul came from six overs, while Short did it in 8.5 overs.

It took the ‘Bosch batsmen only 5.2 overs to reach 31/1 and take victory. Bungqina Nuku claimed 1/19 in three overs, dismissing Eli Aufrichtig for nine, but Tyler Heyns was unbeaten on 15 off 12 in a one-sided win.

Bishops Diocesan College vs Graeme College (50-over)

At Bishops, Graeme College won the toss and batted first. They were bowled out for 188 off the last ball of their innings. In response, Bishops charged to victory, winning by six wickets with 124 balls to spare.

The Makhanda school made a steady start, with Enrique Strydom (21) and Qhama Ngoma (40) sharing a 45-run partnership. But Graeme’s efforts were hurt by an electric Bishops fielding outfit, who got rid of the top three in the order by running out each of them.

Kits McConnachie batted well for 37, while Matthew Edwards took 2/32 and Julian Pilkington 2/33, both in 10, as the visitors batted at just under 3.8 runs per over.

Bishops, then, bounded to victory in only 29.4 overs, led by James Robb-Quinlan, who scored his second century of the Cape Schools Festival. Making sweet contact, he bludgeoned 11 fours and five sixes, facing just 82 balls for his unbeaten 107. That brought his total for four innings to a splendid 383 at an eye-popping average of 127.7.

Samuel Stavely-Alexander, a consistent contributor, chipped in with 31 off 40, which included five fours.

Graeme captain Andrew Muir’s 1/25 from six overs was his side’s most economical bowling performance and, in the context of the Bishops’ onslaught, a fine return.

The toss went Wynberg Boys’ High‘s way when they faced St Andrew’s School on the Jacques Kallis Oval on Tuesday in a 50-over match. The home side was made to graft hard for their 192/9, but they did a superb job defending it to pull off an impressive 45-run victory.

Opening batsman Fawaaz Hendricks laid a solid foundation for the home side, making 48 off 81 balls, while his fellow opener, Jiyaad Abrahams, made 24 before being run out, which brought an end to their 68-run opening stand.

Michail Tarentaal, in the middle order, provided a useful 26, while Hugo Norambuena gave the innings a substantial boost, whacking two sixes and a four in a run-a-ball 30.

Erhard Barends delivered excellence for Saints, claiming 4/32 in eight overs, while Andrew Sobiech tied down the home team’s batsmen with a tidy 2/22 from 10. FG Botha procured 2/40 in seven overs.

Botha was, also, the pick of the St Andrew’s batsmen. While seven of the Bloemfontein side’s players fell cheaply, he played with freedom, smashing seven fours and three sixes in his 54 off 39 balls.

A three-wicket flurry left St Andrew’s in deep trouble on 75/6 in the 14th over, but Schalk van Rensburg and Reuben van Aarde then combined for 69 runs for the seventh wicket. It was, however, slow going, with that partnership taking up almost 25 overs.

Van Aarde’s patient knock brought him 34 runs off 96 balls, while Van Rensburg contributed 26 off 76, but no other batsmen made it beyond single figures.

Nicholas Stafford was in peak form, snaring 3/14 in nine overs to bring the match to an end. It was, however, Ihsan Khan who set Wynberg on course for victory with his 3/22, which sparked the Saints’ middle order collapse.

After 43.5 overs, St Andrew’s was all out for 147. After three strong wins on the trot, the defeat brought their unbeaten Cape Schools Cricket Festival record to a halt.

    SACS vs Grey High (20-over)

The toss went the way of SACS, and they opted to field first in their T20 match against Grey High School on the De Villiers Oval. A nail-biting contest unfolded, with SACS clinching a heart-stopping two-wicket win with only five balls remaining in the game.

They batted out their 20 overs, but Grey was dismissed for an average 111 off the last ball of their innings.

Logan Goddard-Ford got after the SACS bowlers, hammering three fours and three sixes in the innings’ top score of 46 off 39 deliveries. James Upton, meanwhile, chipped in with 20 off 27 and shared a 60-run fifth wicket partnership with Goddard-Ford.

Around them, a steady procession of batsmen made their way to the crease and then made their way off the field in quick order.

Abhay Kalan was responsible for the dismissal of four batsmen, capturing a tremendous 4/29 in four overs. Aqeel Waggie added 2/9 in two overs, Nic Oscraft claimed 2/17 in four, and Ronan Meintjies dialled up the pressure with 1/13 in four.

Waggie, who was in at the fall of the first wicket, then gave the SACS innings some impetus, scoring a valuable 36 off 32 balls, which included two fours and two sixes. Jordan Berry contributed 17 off 20 as he and Waggie combined for a 36-run third wicket partnership.

When SACS slid to 94/8 with 11 balls remaining, the game was in the balance, but Nic Oscraft and Vaughn van den Berg produced an unbeaten 21-run partnership for the ninth wicket, scoring 15 and seven respectively, to see the home team to thrilling victory.

Matthew Tinley was brilliant for Grey High, snapping up 4/14 in four overs. Markus Potgieter added good support, picking up 2/18 in three.

A decision to bat first paid big dividends for St Andrew’s School in their T20 clash against Dale College on Wynberg‘s Silverhurst A Oval on Monday, with a massive opening partnership powering the Bloemfontein school to a 153-run victory.

Naudé Botha went on the rampage, hammering 12 fours and four sixes in making 100 off of only 42 deliveries, after which he retired.

His opening partner, Andrew Sobiech, went after the Dale bowling, too, taking only 45 balls to score 80, which included 10 fours and a six. Together, he and Botha shared an incredible 190-run opening stand.

Lihlumelo Ngcukana claimed 2/51 in four overs for Dale, but Saints amassed 240/4 in their 20 overs.

Dale faced an unlikely victory target, but opening batsman Afika Ganda was fired up, smashing four fours and two sixes in a rapid 42 off 21 deliveries.

After his dismissal, however, the Qonce locals ran out of steam, with Sibongisile Nzima putting up the only other double figure tally, scoring 10 off 9.

Nikhil Sukraj delivered an excellent three-over spell, claiming 4/15, while Erhard Barends maintained a good line to pick up two LBWs in his 3/35 from four overs.

Dale’s reply lasted only 11.4 overs, and they were all out for 87.

    SACS vs Selborne College (20-over)

Facing SACS on the De Villiers Oval, Selborne College won the toss and chose to field first. The home team flourished at the crease, however, and raced to 170/4 from their 20 overs.

Opener Luke Whitehead scored a decent 25 runs off 26 balls in an opening stand of 37. It was, however, number three batsman, Aqeel Waggie, and Jordan Berry, who followed him to the crease, who provided the bulk of the runs. Berry produced a hasty 53 off 39, striking four fours and two sixes, while Waggie hit a pair of fours and a pair of sixes in his 42 off 29.

Faced with the challenge of scoring 8.55 runs per over to win, Selborne made a cracking start, with Aaron Senekal scoring an attacking 46 off 41, which included three big shots over the boundary and four fours. His fellow opener, Joshua Wilkie, weighed in with 32 off 25 as they put on 85 runs for the first wicket.

Matthew Hendry did his bit, charging to 30 off 19 before being caught and bowled by Benjamin Blackburn. Ronan Meintjies was, once again, among the wickets for SACS, securing 2/30 in four overs.

Unfortunately for Selborne, their run chase was interrupted by rain, and they weren’t quite able to catch up to SACS. When play was stopped, they had reached 135/5 after 17.4 overs. That left them the losers by 10 runs on the DLS Method (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method).

Cricket Ball on BatPaarl Boys’ High vs St. John’s College (50-overs)

St. John’s won the toss in Richmond and elected to field first against Paarl Boys’ High on Monday. A fine effort in the field set the Johannesburg side up to chase down a moderate total, and they came through with a three-wicket victory.

Boishaai was limited to only 125 all out in 35.3 overs, but AB Jacobs resisted the St John’s onslaught, scoring 21, while Peter Gildenhuis mustered 20 on a pitch that favoured the bowlers.

David Ireland was at the heart of the St John’s bowling attack, delivering a memorable performance of 5/24 from eight overs.

The Johannesburg side began their run chase strongly, led by opener Nkosana Sibiya, who tallied 61 off 95 balls, which included walloping five fours and a six. Around him, though, he saw partners come and go.

Sibiya’s innings was decisive, however, and he took his side to within two runs of victory before departing. Three balls later, St John’s brought the contest to a close.

Keanu February and Aden Batt bowled well, but Paarl Boys’ High let themselves down with an untidy performance by sending down 20 wides and conceding 22 extras. In a low-scoring game, that was telling.

Paarl Gimnasium vs CSA Hub Invitational XI (50-overs)

At the Lynwood Club, the CSA Hub Invitational XI won the toss and chose to field first. Paarl Gimnasium, with a committed performance at the crease, posted 208 all out.

Opener Matt Dippenaar stuck around for a while to help build up the innings, scoring 38 runs off 96 balls, while Charles King was Gimmies‘ highest scorer for a second day in succession, cracking two fours and two sixes in his 46, which came at almost a run a ball.

Mpontsheng Mashalane bowled superbly, claiming 3/11 in three overs, while Taywin Adams collected 2/27 in seven overs, but also bowled 11 wides.

When the CSA Hub XI batted, Daveric Peterson put up 22 off 47 before being dismissed LBW by Charles King. His was, however, a very lonely resistance as six of his teammates were dismissed on a single or less.

Beon Swanepoel was dynamite, bowling an accurate attacking line to earn four LBWs and figures of 5/24 from 10 overs.

King, meanwhile, followed up his good batting performance with a sharp bowling contribution, sending down three maidens in his 3/15 from seven overs.

In just 21.1 overs, the Hub XI was bowled out for a disappointing 66.
