Outeniqua doubled the visiting Hoërskool Durbanville‘s total, winning 34-17 in George on Saturday, but were made to work hard for their victory in the second half.

The Kwaggas hit the ground running, storming roughshod over the visitors in the first 20 minutes to race into a 24-0 lead.

A brace by their flyer on the wing, Keenan Jantjies, coupled with tries by flyhalf Ellie Meyer and no. 8, Gareth Maree, put the hosts firmly in the driving seat.

The brave Durbie attack never let up, however, and they opened their account on the half-hour, when Claydon Karelse stepped through the narrowest of gaps in the Kwagga defence.

After the Durbies found their feet, it became a more competitive contest, with the visitors outscoring the hosts 12-10 after the break.

Mere minutes into the second, Tobie Roelofse, picked off an Outeniqua pass to strike for Durbanville again.

A final big shove by the burly lock from George, Ruben Rossouw, sealed the victory for Outeniqua and, despite hitting back one more time on the buzzer through Daniel Havenga, the Durbies will have to wait another year for a shot at taking down the Kwaggas.

In another thrilling encounter between Boland Landbou and Stellenberg, the Paarl farmers were able to see off a spirited effort from the visitors, triumphing 25-19 after trailing for most of the match. Link to the game

The Jade Brigade were fired up for this one and grabbed points at the first opportunity when fullback Dehan Neethling split the poles with a well-struck penalty kick.

That became somewhat of a theme for the day, with Neethling contributing 14 of his side’s points off the tee.

A stunning try by Estian Steyn, just after half-time, and a Neethling penalty lifted the Cape Town outfit into a 19-8 lead, but the Boland boys never dropped their heads and kept battering at the visitors’ defences.

Tries by Ruan Viviers and Hans Verster put the home team in front for the first time, with only eight minutes to go, and a red card to Stellenberg compounded their woes. A try by Enslin Claasen then provided Boland with a little breathing space and prevented the Jade Brigade from repeating their success of 2022, when they last bested the farmers.

Oakdale beat Framesby in a high scoring clash, with Kurt Coetzee starring for the winners and scoring 20 of his side’s 50 points.

  • Blackies wen in Worcester, Charlies steeds onoorwonne

It was a stylish home win for the Saints’ boys in their league opener.

Their hooker, Lucien Hugo, spearheaded the attack and went over for a brace of tries, with further five-pointers being scored by Eduan van den Heever and Tumelo Lebepe, which was more than enough to secure a convincing victory at home and draw a line under an exciting day of rugby.

Earlier in the day, Brandfort recorded an impressive victory over Zastron with their hooker, Xander van Heerden, also leading the charge and scoring a hat-trick.

Big Greyven Dempsey brought his tally for their last three games to 10 tries by adding another brace to his record.

Last year, these two met in the league final, with Brandfort edging that match 29-27, so Saturday’s victory bodes well for the boys from Brandfort.

Sand du Plessis ran rampant against Bloemfontein South, winning 55-7, with Shaun Maina scoring 15 points.

However, President Steyn’s exciting centre, Juanricht Swanepoel, was the most destructive player of the day. He crossed the try line on four occasions as they crushed Heatherdale 52-8.

To their credit, Heatherdale never stopped asking questions of the Steyners’ defence and their lanky no. 4 lock, Simpiwe Jiyane, was rewarded with a try.

  • Bulldogs tame Tigers, Steenkamp boots Strand to thrilling success

    Photo: Olga Tosi

The Parel Vallei Bulldogs fended off a fired-up Hoërskool Tygerberg team on Saturday at home, outscoring the visitors 29-14.

The proud Somerset West outfit showed off their versatility, scoring two set-piece tries, with their big tighthead, Ian Kleynhans driving over for two tries. Their other five-pointers came from exciting backline play, with flyhalf Shudley Rhoda finding space behind the rushing Tygerberg defenders to send his lightning-quick wing  Iviwe Majingo over for a brace.

Majingo’s opposite number, Jodrey Yemba, scored both of his side’s tries, but the hosts controlled the game expertly to take the win.

Scrumhalf Michael Kent was phenomenal for PV, putting in some big hits on defence while keeping his team on the front foot with his sound distribution. He and Rhoda controlled the tempo of the game to drive their team to an impressive victory over the Cape Town school.

They face one of their toughest challenges of the season next weekend when they travel to George to take on Hoërskool Outeniqua.

The Kwaggas beat Hoërskool Durbanville 34-17 this weekend and will want to give themselves a further boost ahead of the Absa Wildeklawer Festival, which takes place in Kimberley at the beginning of May.

Hoërskool Hermanus put up a valiant fight against Strand, but the visitors’ scrumhalf, Jayden Steenkamp, showed nerves of steel to lift his side to a dramatic victory.

It was a game of two halves. Strand stormed to a 28-12 lead at the break but had to wait until the final minutes to score again, when Steenkamp knocked over the winning penalty.

For the hosts, Gideon Scheepers and Neo Faro stood out and made the Strand team sweat. Hermanus outscored the visitors by five tries to four, but Steenkamp’s accuracy with the boot was the difference in the contest.

For a fifth time this season, a Strand game was decided by fewer than five points. The Eagles have been an exciting watch week in and week out.

They’ll be excited to take on Stellenberg next weekend and will hope that the home-field advantage might help them to add a big name to the list of teams who have faltered against them this year.

  • Thuto-tweekuns laat Trio triomfeer

    FOTO: KB Photography

  • Hitimana scores a hattrick in another magnificent Milnerton comeback

    Photo: Ayesha Kapery

Milnerton pulled off another stunning comeback in the southern suburbs to break Bishops Diocesan College’s hearts on the Piley Rees Field on Saturday, clawing their way back from a 10-28 deficit to win 31-28.

Captain Frank Hitimana led by example, scoring a scintillating hat-trick, to help his team add another big name to the list of opponents they’ve overcome this season.

After showing promise in early losses to Boland Landbou and St Charles College, the Milnerton first team has been tearing up the competition with courageous performances.

Playing away, they chased down Rondebosch Boys’ High to win by one point after trailing 3-33 with only 15 minutes left to play on 6 April. They followed that up by withstanding a spirited Hugenote attack in Wellington, where they won 17-14.

With this latest victory, they’ve put their future opponents on notice: against Milnerton it isn’t over until it’s over.

Apart from the win and the special performance by their captain, there were many other successes to celebrate for Milnerton. Their testy scrumhalf, Devon Damons, who was influential all over the pitch, marked the victory with a personal milestone, earning his 50th cap for the first team.

Flyhalf Chadwin Sellidon put together a perfect kicking record, opening their account with a penalty before converting all three of his captain’s tries. He then rounded off Milnerton’s comeback when he added the extras after his twin brother, fullback Chadlin Sellidon, scored the winning try.

    Photo: Ayesha Kapery

The Bishops’ boys will be heartbroken at having let this one slip, but they will take away positives from the manner in which they played in the first 40 minutes.

Lucca Mynhardt, who’s been a standout all season, opened the scoring with the first of his two tries after only eight minutes of play.

Mynhardt, whose regular position is fullback, started the match at scrumhalf after a slew of injuries forced a reshuffle in the Bishops’ lineup.

His personal haul was 18 points, from two tries and four conversions, while flyhalf Jordan Petersen and flanker Alex Smith scored the home side’s other five-pointers.

With time up on the clock, the hosts were still ahead but an unforced error handed Milnerton possession, and they kept their cool, playing through the phases, until Sellidon put his side into the lead for the first time when it mattered most.

Though their season has not gone to plan, Bishops will learn from their mistakes. They face a big challenge next weekend when Wynberg Boys’ High visits the Piley Rees.

Milnerton, after their exceptional exploits on the road, play their first home fixture of the term next weekend when they host Hoërskool Bellville. No doubt, after their recent successes, the Milnerton faithful will attend in their masses to cheer on the team that is carrying their name with such distinction this year.

While Wynberg Boys’ High, fresh off of a stunning upset of Paarl Boys’ High in Paarl, retained their unbeaten record, they failed to find a winner against the visiting Grey High.

Watch the game again on SuperSport Schools – Register nowLink to the match

It was a gruelling battle with the only points in the first 60 minutes coming from the boots of Wynberg flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed and Grey fullback Meyer Prinsloo.

Prinsloo opened the scoring and Ahmed struck back for the hosts 20 minutes later, but as they approached the final quarter of the match it appeared as if the first team to get over the try line would take the spoils.

When the hosts’ lock Jaythen Orange finally made the breakthrough, it looked like another win for Wynberg, but the visitors’ hooker Ben Viljoen dived over to return the favour with only a couple of minutes left and Prinsloo converted to level the scores once more.

Wynberg was in the ascendency as the clock ran out, but Grey put the ball into touch to secure a 10-10 draw.

Rondebosch Boys’ High responded well to back-to-back defeats against Milnerton and Paul Roos by whipping SACS 55-22. – Link to the match

Fullback Dylan Miller ran the show for ‘Bosch, crossing the whitewash on three occasions.

Despite a challenging run of fixtures, they’ve displayed strong character and will be eager for a shot at taking down the mighty Wynberg on 4 May, when their first team plays next.

Meanwhile, Brackenfell also continued their rich vein of form, beating DF Malan 45-11.

  • Kemp shines as Paul Roos downs Boishaai

    Photo: Charmaine Sander

Paul Roos Gimnasium successfully defended their home turf in Stellenbosch on Saturday, seeing off Paarl Boys’ High 25-10, with their flank Gert Kemp putting in a man-of-the-match performance to help the Maroon Machine maintain their unblemished record for the season.

After Paul Roos beat Boishaai 35-17 at the Buco Brug Street Stadium last year, this year’s Sportsmans Warehouse Premier Interschools showdown was set up to be another thrilling battle as Paarl Boys sought to reverse that result.

Kemp opened the scoring, bursting through the Boishaai defensive line, after a great off-load in contact by his destructive No. 8, Reuben Kruger.

The visitors kept their cool and flyhalf Viaan Mentoor chipped away at the deficit with a well-struck penalty, but the hosts stood firm to prevent Paarl from crossing their try line.

However, a period of sustained pressure by the PRG attack took them up to the Boishaai try line, and their lively scrumhalf Adeeb Boraine reaped the rewards of his forwards’ hard work when he found space around the ruck to stroll over for their second five-pointer.

Flyhalf Joshua Dampies‘ aim was true off the tee, which lifted his side to the maximum 14 points after their two tries and put them into an 11-point lead at the break.

He continued to punish the visitors with his educated boot and knocked over a drop goal to get the scoreboard rolling in the second half.

The Paarl powerhouse never let up, though, and their endeavour paid off when wing Ashwin Swarts dived over for their sole try. Mentoor nailed the conversion to get his team back to within seven points.

That was it for the Boishaai attack, however, and the marauding PRG raised the ante again as they launched a barrage on the visitors’ defences.

With eight minutes left on the clock, the Maroon Machine set up another unstoppable maul from which Altus Rabe landed the knockout blow.

Dampies added a final penalty for good measure, and the home team kept the visitors off the board as they saw out the final minutes of the contest.

Still unbeaten, Paul Roos has stated their goal for the first team this season is to live up to the school’s illustrious legacy, and they have done so with distinction thus far.

Next weekend they travel to Gqeberha to face Grey High, who surprised by holding Wynberg Boys’ High to a 10-10 draw in Cape Town.

Wynberg, who scored an historic 30-27 win over Boishaai at the Buco Brug Street Stadium a week ago, also remain unbeaten, so Paul Roos will not take their challengers from the Eastern Cape lightly.

Boishaai gets a well-deserved break after a taxing run of fixtures. They’ll next be in action at the Absa Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley at the beginning of May.

  • Grey College ends Paarl Gim’s unbeaten run

    Photo: Louis D Van Niekerk

Grey College and Paarl Gimnasium set the table for a rivalry that is certain to grow into one of the classics when the Free State giants brought the host’s unbeaten streak for the season to an end in a thrilling inaugural Sportsmans Warehouse Premier Interschools clash in Paarl on Saturday.

The Bloemfontein boys dominated the highly anticipated battle in the midfield, with school captain Pieter van der Merwe and star centre Ethan Adams both impressing for the visitors.

Man of the match, lock AJ Meyer, also caused the Gimmies endless problems at lineout time and monstered the home team on defence to play a key part in his side’s epic 29-27 victory.

Freek de Kock opened Paarl Gim’s account in the opening five minutes with a long-distance penalty conversion from just inside his own half, and when his opposite number, Heinz Stockenström, missed a chance to reply five minutes later, it looked like Gim might have gained the upper hand.

Stockenström, though, composed himself to convert a second shot at goal moments later, which levelled the scores. The rest of the first half was a back-and-forth battle between two proud teams, with both sets of defenders remaining rock solid.

Juliun Cosmo stood out for Grey with his work-rate at the breakdowns and his lively little scrumhalf, Philip McLaren, was fired up, putting in some dominant hits against some of the much bigger boys from Paarl.

Somewhat against the run of play, the home side scored the first try of the match when their burly no. 8 Quintin Potgieter powered over.

Alzeadon Felix, the visiting flyhalf, managed to even matters for Grey shortly after that, when he sold a dummy and left the Paarl defenders wrongfooted to stroll in for Grey’s first five-pointer.

Captain Kobus Blanckenberg spearheaded the home team’s efforts and was rewarded with a try on the halftime buzzer, to give his side a 17-10 lead at the break. He was put over by his midfield partner, Markus Muller, after flyhalf Chandler Green had picked out Muller with a clever kick.

Two quickfire tries by “The Tank“, Adams, gave the visitors the lead for the first time in the 47th minute, and Felix was in on the action again 10 minutes later, when he sent Van der Merwe over with a perfectly weighted kick.

With only 10 minutes to play, it looked like Gim was deep in the mire, trailing 17-29, but they showed more of the grit and fighting spirit, which had carried them to a clean record.

Ely Williams, their big tighthead prop, helped his side win two penalties at scrum time, as the Paarl boys gained the upper hand over the Grey forward pack.

A second try by Potgieter, and another in the final three minutes by wing Markus Moolman, after intelligent play by Green, saw them get to within two points of the visitors. However, the conversion attempt of Moolman’s try hit the post.

Despite a valiant fightback in the final minutes for Gim, Grey stood firm and held onto their lead to record a statement victory on the JA Kriel Field.

With the win, they put themselves back in the mix to be considered the top team in the country this year after some excitable fans wrote them off earlier in the season following a shock defeat to Jeppe.

Grey captain Liam van Wyk also deserves a mention for how well he managed his team, and they will be keen to continue building on the momentum generated by their big win over Paarl Gim when they take on Selborne College in East London next weekend.

Gim will dust themselves off and prepare to take on SACS. They’ll be eager to reassert themselves before they head to Kimberley for the Absa Wildeklawer Tournament, where they’ll take on Dr EG Jansen and Helpmekaar.

The clash will be the hosts’ first league action of the season, after they had a bye on the opening weekend.

Their opponents came up short against Brandfort last Saturday, going down 12-31. However, they showed off some attacking potential earlier in the season when they beat Winburg 26-0 at the Pieter Swanepoel Sports Day.

Fullback Ferlin Rulf and the lanky second rower Bokang Maichu impressed in that match and were both rewarded with tries. Their flyhalf, Jano Jackson, was also at the forefront of the attacks and he will relish another opportunity to drive his team towards victory on Saturday evening.

St Andrew’s lost their pre-season opener at the Pieter Swanepoel Sports Day after a gruelling battle with Hoërskool Parys, who scored in the dying seconds to win 24-19.

Saints’ big no. 8, Eduan van den Heever, crossed the try line twice in that match and he will be eager to make a similar impact this weekend.

Speaking of impactful loose forwards keep an eye on Brandfort’s no. 8 Greyven Dempsey, who has scored four tries in their last two matches.

They tackle Zastron, who have stepped forward as one of the early favourites after they dismantled Bloemfontein South 51-0 last weekend.

  • Worcester Gim, Charlies eerste keer tuis in aksie

    FOTO: Brad Morgan
