  • Last second winner for Louis Botha against Sentraal

HTS Louis Botha compounded Sentraal‘s woes on Thursday evening, leaving their Bloemfontein opponents still chasing a first win of the season after they sneaked a thrilling 17-12 victory in Tralies’ backyard.

It took a while for the game to get going, but the “Hatties” slowly gained the ascendency, thanks to their dominance in the set pieces.

Neo Mothibeli‘s accuracy in the lineout gave his side a weapon to chip away at the Tralies’ defences.

At scrum time, the Louis Botha forwards outmuscled the hosts, too, making it difficult for them to launch attacks without a steady platform.

Still, the visitors made their own lives difficult by failing to exit effectively, which allowed Tralies to gain territory every time they were in possession.

They also caught out the Louis Botha defenders with a trick play at a 5m lineout. The visitors were fast asleep to the danger, which allowed Steven Smith to stroll in for the easiest try he’s likely to score in his rugby career.

Just before half-time, however, Louis Botha earned a reward for their efforts when their big lock, Mogomotsi Mokunyane, stretched over for the first of his two tries.

The home team rustled up a response after the break, when their lanky no. 8, Schalk Linde, stormed over for their second five-pointer.

The Hatties could sense they were close to scoring, though, and they kept up their intensity throughout the match. Mokunyane, then, reaped the rewards of his tireless work when he grounded the ball for his second try after a period of relentless pressure by the visiting side.

Fullback, Nkokheli November, levelled the scores by putting the conversion between the uprights and it was game on for the final 10 minutes.

After a frantic back-and-forth, Tralies found themselves under pressure on their goal line in the dying seconds, and when a clearance kick went awry, wing Refilwe Motelung was there to collect the ball and score the winning try.

On Friday, Ficksburg also pulled off a stunning last-second win over their visitors from Ladybrand.

A charge-down try after regulation time had run out saw the hosts break the deadlock against a valiant Ladybrand team.

  • Aprils fool DF Malan in Strand

    Photo: Haygan Orlam

After battling storms and a marauding Charlie Hofmeyr last weekend, the Strand first team was able to execute its preferred style of play on Saturday as they charged their way to a 52-22 victory over DF Malan.

The hosts’ centre, Sherwin April, visited behind the try line on four occasions while his namesake on the wing, Heinrich April went over for a brace.

Being able to provide their backline with good quality ball worked a treat for the exciting young side from Strand, and their other centre Grezano Plaatjies and wing Lyle Julies also added their names to the scoresheet. Six conversions from scrumhalf Jayden Steenkamp further boosted their efforts.

Strand has been an exciting watch all season and next weekend they’ll be in action at the Hermanus Sports Day, before taking on their biggest challenge of 2024 when they host Stellenberg on 27 April.

Luan Giliomee, once again, starred for Charlie Hofmeyr, scoring 10 of his side’s 15 points as they edged out Hopefield in another thrilling encounter for the team from Ceres.

Speedy Charlies’ wing Deolyn Isaac went over for another try as Charlie Hofmeyr weathered a fierce challenge from a fired-up Hopefield squad.

Next weekend, another exciting challenge awaits the Ceres boys when they host Bredasdorp.

Bredasdorp made Robertson sweat on Saturday and did very well to contain the threat of the Robbies‘ backline.

Robertson, however proved that they are more than a one-trick pony by switching up their playing style and changing the point of attack to the forwards, which enabled them to claw their way back and claim a win.

With only five minutes left to play, they trailed 8-19, but with only seconds remaining they scored the winning try.

It was the big boys’ time to shine as their no. 8, Ethan Fourie, dotted down twice and hooker Yannick du Plessis added the other five-pointer.

Crucially, their SA Sevens’ star, centre Bernardo Diedericks, knocked over the conversions, and also added a penalty, which proved to be the difference in the end.

Porterville‘s dynamic fullback Howard Ocks contributed 14 points, scoring two tries and landing two conversions, as they handed Curro Langebaan a 29-22 defeat at home.

Porterville’s big tighthead prop, Linrique Mason, also crossed for two five-pointers.

  • Velties seëvier danksy “Senuwees-van-Staal” Burger

    FOTO: Tiaan Serfontein

    Puntemakers:

Duineveld 14 (5) – Drie: Franco Erasmus. Strafdoele: AJ Burger (3). Diamantveld 12 (5) – Drieë: Jonathan Harding, Enrique Boshoff. Doelskop: Marno Greeff.

  • Wynberg takes Buco Brug Street Stadium by storm in historic upset

    PHOTO: Deborah Redelinghuys

Wynberg Boys’ High kept their perfect record for the season alive by beating Paarl Boys’ High for the first time since 1991 on Saturday.

What made the feat even more impressive was that they downed the Paarl giants on their home turf, handing the Boishaai first team their first taste of defeat for the year.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to the game

Wynberg’s SA A flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed, was phenomenal for his side again, slotting three conversions and three penalties to cancel out the extra try scored by the hosts.

In the most crucial moment of the game, long after regulation time had elapsed, Ahmed split the uprights for a final time to secure a historic win for his side, who won against Boishaai for the first time in 33 years.

To underscore what a generational performance it was, Joe da Costa, the father of Wynberg captain Aden da Costa, ran out for Wynberg in 1988, the last time they got one over Paarl Boys’ High before the win in ’91.

It was an intense battle throughout, with the lead changing hands no fewer than five times in the first half. At every opportunity, Ahmed punished the hosts and kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Boishaai wing Ashwin Swarts opened the scoring for the home side, but Ahmed struck back with another successful penalty goal.

Using the width of the field, Boishaai then managed to send their other wing, Aiden Jacobs, over to regain the lead, but the visitors handed them some of their own medicine when Levi Brown scored Wynberg’s first try.

When Kunene Gadu went over for a second, Wynberg took a 20-10 advantage into the break.

As one would expect from a team of their stature, Paarl Boys’ High came out swinging in the second half.

Wynberg defended bravely, with players like Luqobo Makwedini and Brandon Asburner putting their bodies on the line to withstand the Boishaai onslaught. However, after 15 minutes of frantic defending, the home side created an opening for Anroux du Plessis to score after a well-rehearsed lineout movement.

With Paarl’s tails up, Jacobs crossed for his second try to level the scores, with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining. The action was far from over.

When Wynberg scrumhalf Tyrone Gombe sent a bullet to his captain, Da Costa, he barrelled into the Paarl defence but was stopped only centimetres from the try line. However, Ezra Antonio, up in support, picked up and dived over to give his side the lead once more.

To their credit, Paarl Boys’ High never let up and they continued to throw everything at the Wynberg defence until Swarts found a gap to go over for his second five-pointer of the day in the final moments of regulation time.

Neither team was ready to settle for a draw and they kept going hard at it well into added time. Boishaai had a couple of moments where they came within reach of securing the win, but Wynberg was given a chance to win it when the assistant referee alerted the referee to an error on the hosts’ side. They had 15 players on the field while another was in the sin bin.

Ahmed was the man for the occasion. He nailed the clutch kick to the roar and delight of the Wynberg supporters.

  • A massive statement as Grey puts up 90 against Kwaggas

    Photo: Kulu Ferreira

Grey College ran in 14 tries against Outeniqua on Saturday as they silenced their doubters after a shock defeat to Jeppe at the NMI Toyota North-South Tournament in their last outing.

The Bloem boys proved that they remain a force to be reckoned with as they produced a masterclass against the visitors from George.

Grey’s burly outside centre, Ethan Adams, crossed the whitewash on three occasions, while the two players brought into the lineup after their unexpected loss, Juliun Cosmo (flanker) and Heinz Stockenström (fullback), also made their presence felt.

Stockenström contributed 21 points to the hosts’ massive total, diving over for a try and slotting eight conversions after taking over the kicking duties.

Cosmo dotted down twice for the home team, including a sensational try just after Ellie Meyer opened Outeniqua’s account with a penalty in the 26th minute.

Grey captain Liam van Wyk and winger Ruben Cilliers also bagged two apiece, while the rest of the damage was done by Siyabonga Kenny (winger), Alzeadon Felix (flyhalf), AJ Meyer (lock) and school captain, Pieter van der Merwe (centre).

Felix steered two conversions over before halftime to help Grey to a convincing 36-3 lead at the break, but the Free Staters upped the ante even further in the second stanza to romp to a massive 90-3 victory, which would have sent out a clear warning signal to the rest of their season’s opponents.

Earlier in the day Grey’s third team showed character to withstand a fired-up onslaught from Fichardtpark‘s 1st XV.

After trailing 0-12 at halftime, the Grey “Peaches” fought back to forge a 21-12 advantage. Then, the Fichie Lions hit back once more through their speedy winger, Divan Martens, but the Peaches held out for a hard-fought victory.

Next weekend, Grey College takes on one of its biggest challenges of the season when they travel to the Western Cape to face Paarl Gimnasium in a brand-new inter-schools’ clash.

The Gimmies have been the pacesetters this season and are one of the few traditional powerhouses who are yet to taste defeat this year after another monster effort saw them beat Affies by a single point, 20-19, in Pretoria this weekend.

After the overpowering performance Grey College produced against the Kwaggas, that battle with Paarl Gim looks like an early contender for the game of the season.

    Puntemakers:

Paul Roos Gimnasium 38 (10) – Drieë: Gert Kemp (2), Reuben Kruger, Matthew Seymore, Gerrit van Vuuren, Strafdrie. Doelskoppe: Joshua Dampies (3). Rondebosch Boys’ High 17 (7) – Drieë: Tom Barnard, Dylan Miller. Doelskop: David Simon (2). Strafdoel: Simon.

Gqeberha’s Hoërskool Framesby visits Worcester on Saturday for an enticing showdown with HTS Drostdy.

Framesby played some very good rugby at the Kearsney Easter Festival, where they produced a frantic finish to edge out Drostdy’s neighbours, Worcester Gimnasium, 36-34, on the last day.

They also beat the hosts, Kearsney College, 18-17, in their first match and gave Monument everything they could handle before going down 17-22.

Framesby, however, faces a Drostdy side with their tails up. Last weekend, “the Donkeys” cruised to a convincing 46-10 victory over Hugenote and earlier in the year, at the NMI Toyota North-South Tournament, they beat Hoërskool Nelspruit 34-27 but went down 15-44 to high-flying Dr EG Jansen.

Saturday’s battle between the two packs of forwards promises to produce fireworks, with neither side accustomed to taking a step back.

Tertius Wantenaar, Daniel Mellet and Sandro Smit make up the Drostdy front row. They’ll be up against big Sean Vermaak, Ewald Labuschagne, and his namesake at hooker, Ewald Muller.

After an impressive win against an in-form Worcester Gimnasium last weekend, Swartland will aim to use that encouraging victory as a springboard to success against the visiting side from Hermanus this weekend.

Carlo van der Merwe starred at flyhalf in their win over Worcester, slotting four penalties and two crucial conversions, to see his side to a 26-24 victory.

This weekend, though, Van der Merwe starts at inside centre while Iminathi Njozela wears the number 10 jersey.

The visitors will look to the likes of Kyle Lewis and Giano da Kosta to help them contain the Swartland attack, while captain Reon Sparkham and his fellow forwards do battle for dominance up front.

  • Boishaai out to defend their unbeaten streak against rampant Wynberg

    Photo: Deborah Redelinghuys

Thus far in the 2024 season, both Paarl Boys’ High and Wynberg Boys’ High have kept perfect records, producing some outstanding performances along the way. On Saturday, however, one of those perfect records is likely to come to an end when they meet at the Buco Brug Street Stadium in Paarl.

Last year, when they met, the Paarl outfit sneaked a 33-29 victory away from home, but Boishaai has already shown that previous results are no indicators for this season’s squad.

They avenged a shock defeat to Hoërskool Durbanville in 2023 by crushing them 73-7 in their opening match of this season. Since then, they’ve taken down Jeppe (45-19), Garsfontein (38-36), King Edward VII (22-7) and Pretoria Boys High (24-8).

Most recently, they withstood a stern challenge from a marauding Oakdale squad, beating them 19-10.

The challengers this weekend have also started their season with a bang. They pummelled Windhoek High (84-3) in their opener, then beat St Charles (28-24), St Andrew’s College (43-21) and Kingswood College (35-7). Last weekend, they also beat the Durbies, winning 36-19.

The Boishaai squad remains unchanged from the one that played last weekend, with Viaan Mentoor leading proceedings in the midfield and their big hooker, Christiaan Grundling, setting up the hosts’ destructive set pieces up front.

Wynberg is also unchanged, barring a few positional switches among the forwards.

One of the keys to the visitors’ successes this season has been the play of their flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed. If they’re to score an upset, Ahmed will be at the forefront of that effort.

Meanwhile, Boland Landbou takes on Bishops Diocesan College on the Piley Rees Field in Cape Town.

Saturday’s game will be the first for Bishops on their home ground since the Easter break.

In their most recent action, Bishops convincingly beat Dale College 47-24 in their first match at the KES Easter Festival, but they were outmuscled and outplayed by King Edward VII in their last outing, losing 8-45.

They’ll take on the farmers without their talisman scrumhalf, Kashief Joseph, but young Max Marr has already shown up well in his stead. It was his quick thinking that led to Bishops’ only try against KES.

Jack Campbell starts at hooker this weekend. He and the rest of the Bishops’ pack will have to be on top of their game to keep the big Boland boys at bay.

Boland suffered a 13-47 loss to an in-form Paarl Gimnasium last weekend, and Hilton College managed a 17-14 upset of the farmers at the St John’s Easter Rugby Festival, but they remain a side to be reckoned with.

Their results include impressive victories over Outeniqua (15-13) and Maritzburg College (32-17), and they’ll be keen to add another win to their list of achievements.

Flankers Karst Smits and Hans Verster have been the dangermen in the Boland Landbou lineup, and they will seek to continue their destructive form on the Piley Rees this weekend.

  • New-look Milnerton takes on Hugenote, Brakkies face biggest challenge yet

    Photo: Ayesha Kapery

Milnerton will be aiming to build on the confidence they gained in a stunning come-from-behind win over Rondebosch Boys’ High last weekend, when they take on Hugenote in Wellington on Saturday.

With only 15 minutes to play against ‘Bosch, Frank Hitimana and his side clawed their way back from a 3-33 deficit to win by a single point.

The Hugenote team will be protecting their home turf with all their might, however, and Saturday’s showdown will be now no walk in the park for the visitors.

Hugenote will be without their dynamic, goal-kicking inside centre, Xavier Oktober, which has resulted in his namesake, Xavier Fredericks, switching from fullback to the number 12 jersey, with Winley McNeil getting the start at the back.

The Milnerton lineup looks very different from the one that won against Rondebosch, with wholesale changes resulting in starts for Sheldan Puma, Jeremy Armstrong, Dylan Peverett, Joshua Vomberg and Litha Tasana.

The stalwart Sellidon twins are in position, though, ready to launch the Milnerton attack, with Chadwin at flyhalf and Chadlin at fullback.

Meanwhile, back in Cape Town, SACS is in the northern suburbs to take on an exciting Hoërskool Brackenfell side.

The Brakkies have been grabbing attention all season long, most recently by getting the better of Hoërskool Durbanville at the Margaret Pansgrouw Sports Day, where they beat the hosts 25-17.

SACS has delivered some good performances, but they struggled with kicking woes in the early going. Last weekend those appeared to be resolved as they edged out Stellenberg 24-22, thanks to Rayaan Solomons‘ kicking accuracy.

His opposite number, Junior Louw, has been nearly faultless this season, however, so it will be intriguing to see how the two playmakers measure up on Saturday.
