  • A comeback for the ages as Milnerton upsets Rondebosch

    Photo: Ayesha Kapery

After showing promise in the pre-season against the likes of St Charles College and Boland Landbou, Milnerton High School turned that potential into points, upsetting Rondebosch Boys’ High 34-33, after trailing 3-33 on the Tinkie Heyns Field on Saturday.

The hosts got off to a solid start, seemingly putting the match to bed after 40 minutes, thanks to a brace of tries by their big hooker, Justin Amos, and further five-point contributions by Alutha Wesi, Harry Soboil and Shakeel Abrahams.

By that stage, Milnerton’s only points had come from the boot of flyhalf, Chadwin Sellidon, but that was about to change as the visitors launched an incredible fightback.

Spurred on by their captain, Frank Hitimana, who rounded off their first try after some excellent work by Briint Davids, with only 15 minutes left to play, the Milnerton side picked up the pace considerably and left ‘Bosch stunned.

Minutes later, the hosts were huddled under their posts again, after Morgan Lodewyk went over for Milnerton’s second.

Sellidon’s kicking off the tee had a massive part to play in a tight match, and he contributed even more with a try of his own. Winger Keagan Wood struck twice to get the visitors to within a point, with a minute left on the clock, and Sellidon added the extras to give his side the lead for the first time in the game.

The drama wasn’t yet over, however. From the ensuing kickoff, Milnerton gave away a penalty within reach of their uprights, but the hosts decided to go for a lineout instead of taking an attempt at goal, which gave the visitors a chance to steal back the ball and secure a remarkable victory.

The margins were almost as fine in the match between SACS and Stellenberg, with the team from the southern suburbs digging deep to secure a 24-22 victory.

SACS were missing some of their stars due to injury, including captain Seth Bradford and vice-captain Ben van Coller, but stand-in skipper Nic Reynolds did brilliantly to rally his troops.

Their troubles were compounded when flanker Siphe Mbungendlu suffered a serious injury, but the remaining SACS players pulled together and had just enough in the tank to see off the Jade Brigade.

Tries by Luka Tonitz, Dehan Neethling, and Dale du Toit got Stellenberg to within two points of their first win of the season, but Rayaan Solomon‘s accuracy off the tee for SACS proved to be the difference on the day which, given their kicking struggles earlier this season, was a huge positive for the visiting team.

Wynberg Boys’ High kept their perfect record for the season intact, comfortably beating Hoërskool Durbanville 36-19.

Hooker Xabiso Mkiva and winger Kunene Gadu each scored two tries for Wynberg as they outplayed the Durbies.

Next weekend, however, they will face their toughest challenge yet when they take on Paarl Boys’ High at the Buco Brug Street Stadium.

  • Brakkies meer as bloot blaf

Brackenfell in aksie by hul jaarlikse sportdag | FOTO: Reinhardt Hamman

    Puntemakers:

Hoërskool Brackenfell 25 – Drieë: Graigan Matroos (2), Wade Fortuin. Doelskoppe: Junior Louw (2). Strafdoelle: Louw (2). Hoërskool Bellville 17 – Drieë: Dominic Adams (2), Willick de Klerk. Doelskop: Ashwin Cox.

  • Boishaai bully Oakdale at the Buco Brug Street Stadium

    Photo: Deborah Redelinghuys

Paarl Boys’ High continue to find answers, regardless of their challenges. On Saturday, the Boishaai first team kept their unblemished record for the season intact as they defended their home turf at the Buco Brug Street Stadium against the visiting Oakdale Landbou.

Experience all the action again on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to the game

Kurt Coetzee, the electric inside centre from Riversdal, opened the scoring early on as the visitors drew first blood by way of a penalty.

However, two quickfire tries by the boys in blue, in response, put the home team in the driver’s seat early on.

First, hooker Christiaan Grundling powered his way through the farmers’ defenders, then winger Aiden Jacobs had too much gas and left the visitors grasping at air when he went over five minutes later.

Even though Boishaai had to defend with 14 men for large periods of the match, as they received three successive yellow cards, the team from Paarl kept control of the game throughout.

After the break, their big bruiser at flank, Rubin Dames, increased their lead when he barrelled through a couple of would-be defenders. Flyhalf Viaan Mentoor, who has been excellent so far this season, added the extras to extend the host’s lead to 19-3.

    Photo: Deborah Redelinghuys

A raft of penalties meant that the game couldn’t fall into a rhythm, but the hosts had done more than enough to add another big name to the list of teams they’ve dealt with already this season.

Oakdale continued to apply pressure through the likes of Duraan Janse van Rensburg and Erick Steyn, but Boishaai captain Dian Smal and his team were rock solid on defence and utilised their own opportunities better.

A late try by Oakdale’s replacement prop, Sine Mdlankomo, softened the blow, but it came too late to trouble the hosts.

Next weekend, the Paarl outfit welcomes Wynberg Boys’ High, who are also still undefeated in 2024.

Wynberg convincingly beat Hoërskool Durbanville 36-19 on Saturday, but Boishaai overwhelmed the same team 73-7. The boys from the southern suburbs will, no doubt, enter the forthcoming match as the underdogs.

If players like Dames, Mentoor and Grundling maintain the form they have displayed thus far, Paarl Boys’ High will be a difficult team to beat this season.

    Scorers

Paarl Boys’ High 19 (12) – Tries: Christiaan Grundling, Aiden Jacobs, Rubin Dames. Conversions: Viaan Mentoor (2). Oakdale 10 (3) – Try: Sine Mdlankomo. Conversion: Kurt Coetzee. Penalty: Coetzee.

  • Diamantveld verhang bordjies teen Uppies

    FOTO: Asjas Fotos

    Puntemakers:

Hoërskool Diamantveld 40 (21) – Drieë: Jonathan Harding (2), FJ de Vries, De Wet du Plooy, Simon Liversage, Clinton Brits. Doelskoppe: Liversage (5). Hoërskool Upington 7 (0) – Drie: Ruan Janse van Rensburg. Doelskop: Hercules Hudson.

  • Bellville and Brackenfell headline at the Margaret Pansgrouw Sports Day

    PHOTO: Reinhardt Ham

The Hoërskool Brackenfell first team is no stranger to playing in the main event. They’ve already played in a couple of headline games this season.

In their first, they beat Hopefield in a dramatic main game at the Brackenfell Sports Weekend. Then, at the Oakdale Klein Karoo Saadproduksie Rugby Week, they tore through their competition to earn a place in the finale, where they came up just short against Charlie Hofmeyr.

On Saturday, the Brakkies take on Hoërskool Bellville in the final match of the Margaret Pansgrouw Sports Day in Bellville.

The hosts are coming off an impressive run of performances at the Mauritz Hansen Rugby Weekend, where they took down Piet Retief (19-13) and Witteberg (12-10), and also put up a real fight in a 7-19 loss to Hans Strijdom.

Watch out for the Brakkies’ flyhalf Junior Louw, and the centre pairing of Jaydon La Douce and Marquine Abrahams, in the final match. That trio has shown big-game temperament already this season and finds a way to get points on the board.

In the penultimate game, Melkbosstrand squares off against Hoërskool Porterville, and before that Hoërskool Hermanus will attempt to tame the Hoërskool Tygerberg Tigers.

  • Worcester Gim vs Swartland and Montagu vs Robbies kicks off Boland season

After a highly successful Easter tour, Worcester Gimnasium is back home to face their local rivals Swartland on Saturday.

At the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival, the boys from Worcester grabbed the spotlight, with their exciting running rugby bringing them nail-biting victories over Hoërskool Rustenburg and Marlow Landbou. They edged out both by a single point, before losing 34-36 to Framesby on a last-second kick in their final outing.

They play an entertaining brand of brave rugby and will seek to build on the momentum they built up in KZN when they take on Swartland in Malmesbury.

Swartland scored 48 unanswered points against their opponent’s neighbours, Worcester Secondary, at the pre-season HTS Drostdy Sports Day, but they will face a far tougher challenge this weekend.

Props, Wilfred Slingers and Armaan Adendorff, have been outstanding for the Gimmies so far this season, and they will aim to assert their dominance on Saturday.

For Swartland, much of their success has come through their wingers, Deven Bocks and Tyrese Barlow, so the visitors will have to be wary of the speedsters on the outside.

Meanwhile, Hoërskool Montagu travels to face Hoërskool Robertson in a fixture that has the potential to deliver fireworks.

Both teams won two of their three matches recently at the Oakdale Klein Karoo Saadproduksie Rugby Week in Riversdal.

The Robbies have already shown their intent to make their home field a fortress this year, and they held off Vredendal 15-12 in the headline match at their Robbie-Fest.

Winger Ruwan Stevens scored the winning try in that contest, after earlier five-pointers from Bernardo Diedericks and Jaydan van Niekerk.

Montagu was also in action at the Robbie-Fest, where they ran riot in a 52-12 victory over the Jakes Gerwel Technical School.

Flanker Chadwin Lottering dotted down twice and his flyhalf, Renaldo Koker, contributed 17 points with a try and six conversions.

Paarl Boishaai t. Oakdale om 13:30:

Hoër Jongenskool Paarl: 15 Francois van der Merwe, 14 Aiden Jacobs, 13 Tristan Joubert, 12 Tristan Fransman, 11 Ashwin Swarts, 10 Viaan Mentoor, 9 Keagan Smith, 8 Douw Wessels, 7 Rubin Dames, 6 Anroux du Plessis, 5 Jayden Joubert, 4 Dian Smal, 3 Juan van der Merwe, 2 Christiaan Grundling, 1 Bernard du Toit.

Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale: 15 Reinhart Viljoen, 14 Christian Vorster, 13 Lee-Winn Pretorius, 12 Kurt Coetzee, 11 Duraan Janse van Rensburg, 10 CT Vosloo, 9 Jandrian Goosen, 8 Erick Steyn, 7 Jannes Snyman, 6 Zack Wessels, 5 Roy Viljoen, 4 Ruan Swart, 3 Tiaan Turck, 2 Gustav van der Merwe, 1 Kai Pratt.

  • Diamonds wil sake regstel teen Uppies

    FOTO: Marnus Prinsloo

  • Boland Landbou in search of a win on the J.A. Kriel Field

    FOTO: Louis D van Niekerk

Boland Landbou has not tasted victory against Paarl Gimnasium on the J.A. Kriel Field since 2006, if the Gimmies have their way on Saturday, that record will remain intact.

Paarl Gim has emerged as one of the front-runners for the number-one spot in South African schools’ rugby this season after convincing performances in the pre-season and during the Easter break.

They dusted off Monument 38-21 at the NMI Toyota North-South Tournament in Pretoria, before making a loud statement against Pretoria Boys’ High, outmuscling them 75-10.

Boland Landbou have also made an exciting start to their season, most recently scoring 59 unanswered points against Hans Moore. But they showed some cracks in their armour when they slipped up against Hilton College, losing 14-17 at the St John’s Easter Rugby Festival.

When these two met on the farm last year, Paarl Gim doubled up Boland for a 36-18 triumph.

Fullback Freek de Kock played on the wing in that match and was one of six Gimmies to cross the home team’s try line as they stamped their authority on their local rivals.

Boland Landbou’s star flyhalf Retagen van Rooi also played in that match and will look forward to an opportunity to strike back at Gim this weekend.

It will take a special performance to cause the hosts to stumble, though. With players like young Markus Muller, who has been grabbing attention since he burst on the scene at last year’s Grant Khomo Week, in their midst, the Paarl outfit looks like an unstoppable force at present.

The challengers pride themselves on being something akin to an immovable object, and with a pack that is able to compete with most in the country, captain Hans Verster and co will be looking forward to digging in their heels and trading blow-for-blow with Gim when they run out on Saturday.
