  • Rugby uit die boonste rakke op Riversdal

    FOTO: Lunchbox Photography

  • O’Sullivan hat-trick trips up Bishops at 175 Fest

(Photo courtesy of Bishops Diocesan College)

Michaelhouse produced a clinical display on the Piley Rees to hand Bishops Diocesan College their first loss of the season at their 175 Rugby Festival.

The KZN outfit hit the ground running and stunned the hosts early on, but Bishops clawed their way back into the contest in the second half, only to be denied by the visitors’ strong closing quarter.

Michaelhouse’s outside centre, Rourke O’Sullivan, scored a hat-trick of tries to help his team take down the Diocesan College boys on their home field.

It took less than a minute for the visitors to open their account after the Bishops’ attempt to exit their danger area was charged down, with flanker, Riley Gehren, diving over for the opening score.

By the end of the half, Michaelhouse had increased their lead to 25-3 and it looked like it might be a long night for the locals.

Coach Wes Chetty’s halftime talk and some fresh bodies in the pack sparked something in the Bishops’ side, though. Both tries for the hosts came through their substitutes, as Imma Magongwa and Chris du Toit helped their side pick up some momentum.

However, ‘House regrouped well to quell the Bishops boys’ fightback in the final stanza. In the last 15 minutes, O’Sullivan dotted down his third five-pointer and the big loosehead prop, Aphiwe Shelembe, rounded off the win with one last try to make the full-time score 37-17.

Though Bishops will be bitterly disappointed with the loss, they will take some motivation from the fact that they outscored the visitors in the second half and will look to bounce back immediately when they face St Andrew’s College on Saturday.

(Photo courtesy of Bishops Diocesan College)

St Andrew’s ran into an in-form Wynberg Boys’ High side in their first outing at the festival.

Wynberg’s big 8th man, Torren February, crossed the whitewash twice in their 43-21 win.

An early yellow card to the local school gave the boys from Makhanda an advantage and they made good use of it to go 14-0 up through tries by winger Aza Nonxuba and centre Nic Hall.

Wynberg responded through their big prop, Luqobo Makwedini, just before the break. Once they got their tails up, though, they began pummelling the visitors’ defence in the second half.

February crossed over almost immediately after the restart, and three minutes later his hooker, Xabiso Mkiva, followed suit, to hand Wynberg the lead for the first time in the match.

More tries by the Capetonians’ captain, Aden da Costa, as well as February, Tyron Gombe and Kunene Gadu, put Saints to bed, and they were able to reply only once through their speedy winger, Julian Mapoore.

Kingswood College continued to impress after making a statement earlier in the season with a 29-14 win over Marlow Landbou.

They trailed Hilton College 7-25 with about 20 minutes left to play but finished strongly to sneak the victory by a single point, 26-25.

In the first match of the day, Grey High School, from Gqeberha, won an intense, low-scoring battle against SACS, with an interception leading to Grey’s winger, Meyer Prinsloo, scoring the only try of the match.

SACS had some difficulties with their goal-kicking during the pre-season and they again missed a couple of opportunities on Thursday. Clearly, that is something that needs to be worked on. However, there were also positives to take from their performance against the visiting side.

The first team action continues on Saturday when Bishops take on St Andrew’s, Wynberg crosses swords with Kingswood College, and Michaelhouse seeks to keep their record clean when they run out against SACS. The action kicks off at 11:30 when Grey High and Hilton College do battle.

  • Plattelanders reg om te presteer in Parys

Plattelanders reg om te presteer in Parys

    NewsG President Steyn Reinardt Wiid

Vrydag begin Bothaville hul veldtog teen Hoërskool Panorama, voordat Ladybrand teen Hoërskool Hoopstad uitdraf.

Groep A: Retief, Carel de Wet, Morgenzon, Zastron.

Groep B: Parys, President Steyn, Riebeeckrand, New Horizons College Bethlehem.

Groep C: Die Anker Skool, Reddersburg, Zeerust, New Horizons College Harrismith.

  • Lekker Laeveld-rugby uitgestal by Danie Rossouw-week

    Fichardtpark | FOTO: Marnus Prinsloo

  • Bishops celebrates proud 175 year history with rugby spectacle – All the fixtures

Bishops Diocesan College celebrates its 175th Anniversary this weekend, marking the historic milestone with their Bishops 175 Rugby and Hockey Festival, which will see 1 400 young sportsmen representing their schools over the course of four days.

In 1849, just as swarms of people began flocking to the west coast of the USA, in the California gold rush, and Queen Victoria was into the twelfth year of a nearly 64-year reign as Monarch of the United Kingdom and Great Britain, the first Bishop of Cape Town, Robert Gray founded Diocesan College in Rondebosch.

To put it into perspective, that was only 26 years after William Webb Ellis famously picked up a football in the town of Rugby in England and made a mad dash towards the opposition’s goal line, inspiring the sport that would come to play such a large part in our culture.

The hosts’ 1st XV has already revved up its engine this past weekend with two good wins at the Wynberg Boys’ High Rugby Festival. They flexed their muscles in their opener against Windhoek High School, from Namibia, winning 43-8, before showing real character to see out a 28-24 arm-wrestle against St Charles College from Pietermaritzburg.

Scrumhalf, Kashief Joseph, has already put his hand up as a player to watch in the Bishops’ team this season, stepping up to fill the boots of the Class of ’23’s Haashim Pead, who made the SA Schools team last year.

Joseph also captained his school’s 1st XI cricket team through a brilliant season, but he’s shown that he is not yet done etching his name into the Diocesan College history books by scoring two tries against St Charles.

Co-captains, James Le Feuvre and Alex Smith, lead the Bishops’ first team out for their first challenge at the festival on Thursday at 16:00, when they take on Michaelhouse. They’re in action again on Saturday, in the final match of the weekend against St Andrew’s College.

Before both of those matches, a team of Bishop’s old boys will square off against representatives from their respective challengers to set the table for the main games.

SACS and Wynberg Boys’ High also got off to winning starts at last weekend’s event.

SACS outmuscled Hoërskool Durbanville by five tries to three, but kicking difficulties made the SACS boys sweat to secure a 25-22 victory. They will hope to have shaken off the last remaining rust from the off-season in that match because they might be punished for those types of mistakes in their fixtures against Grey High and Michaelhouse.

Watch out for some of the big boys in the SACS front row, like Ikhona Maxegwana and Ethan Combrink, this weekend.

Wynberg stormed to a lopsided 84-3 victory in their opening match of the season against Windhoek High, but they will be expecting much more resistance on Thursday and Saturday when they square off against St Andrew’s College and Kingswood College.

The big victory, and hat-tricks for flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed and scrumhalf Tyron Gombe, will have done wonders for the boys from Wynberg’s confidence heading into the weekend.

Kingswood faces Hilton College on the first day. They will hope to continue building on their momentum from the Graeme College Festival where they made an early statement by beating Marlow Landbou 29-14.

  • Dertig spanne by Klein Karoo Saadproduksie-week in aksie

    FOTO: Marnus Prinsloo

  • Wynberg starts the season with a bang, Oakdale cuts down Rondebosch

The new schoolboy rugby season was welcomed in style in the Western Cape as teams gathered at Wynberg Boys’ High for five action-packed days from Friday.

The four big rivals from the southern suburbs all kicked off their seasons at the event, with Wynberg and SACS registering wins. Bishops Diocesan College tacked two wins onto their record, and Rondebosch Boys’ High came up just short against Oakdale Landbou.

On Saturday, Wynberg flexed their muscles against the visiting side from Windhoek High School, blasting the visitors 84-3.

The 9/10 combo of Yaqeen Ahmed and Tyronn Gomb devastated the Namibians’ defensive lines. Both crossed the whitewash three times, and Brandon Asburner scored a brace of tries, as the hosts romped to a decisive win, scoring 14 tries in all.

It was a tough ask for Windhoek High, who had little turnaround time after playing in the final match against Bishops on Friday. Bishops controlled the tempo of that game with a well-drilled attack as they rolled to 43-8 victory in their opener.

Alejandro Morkel got one back against the locals, finishing off with some clever support play after an interception.

Bishops also took on St Charles College from Pietermaritzburg on Sunday. Saints had beaten Milnerton 25-19 in a thrilling encounter under lights on Friday evening.

The Bishops’ 1st XV has been preparing to defend their school’s honour at their 175th Year Festival next weekend, and they stormed out of the blocks on Sunday.

Two intercept-tries gave the Capetonians a commanding lead early on.  Kashief Joseph scored twice and captain, James le Feuvre, added another for a 21-0 head-start, but St Charles kept their heads up, kept fighting, and clawed their way back into the contest just before half time.

Halfback, Matthew Fick, who made the Sharks’ Craven Week team last year, was immense for Saints, along with his flyhalf, Ukhanyo Ntsangani, but a perfect conversion record by Lucca Mynhardt gave Bishops the edge.

The home side was forced to defend in the second half but showed character to keep St Charles at bay, which bodes well as they aim to add another strong season to the school’s proud rugby history in its 175th anniversary year.

Windhoek High finally got a taste of success on Monday, when they beat Bellville THS in a gruelling 7-0 slugfest.

Just like in the game against Bishops, it was the winger, Morkel, who scored the only try for the Namibians, which his fullback, William Beukes converted. That proved enough to secure a victory before they took the long drive back to Windhoek.

SACS put themselves under pressure against Hoërskool Durbanville by missing all six of their attempts at goal and conceding a penalty try, but, ultimately, they outmuscled the Durbies, scoring five tries to win by three points.

Oakdale Landbou were the only visitors to have success against one of the southern suburbs’ powerhouses, beating Rondebosch 17-13.

After a closely contested first half, the farmers from Riversdal trailed by three points and David Simon doubled Bosch’s lead with a penalty shortly after the break.

Oakdale stuck to their structures, however, and Reinhardt Viljoen and Kai Pratt crossed the whitewash to add to Lohan Gerber‘s first half try to seal a big victory for the visitors ahead of their Klein Karoo Saadproduksie Rugby Week next weekend.

  • It’s the “Louw Show” in Brackenfell

    PHOTO: Reinhardt Hamman

Junior Louw scored 15 points off the tee to see Brackenfell to an exciting victory over Hopefield under lights on Friday evening to kick off Brackenfell’s yearly sports weekend in style.

With their flyhalf seemingly unable to put a foot wrong, the Brakkies edged past Hopefield by one point in a thrilling battle.

Watch all the games again on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to the event

Hopefield’s fullback, Jayden Engelbrecht opened the scoring, slicing through the Brakkie defence like a hot knife through butter to dot down inside 12 minutes, with winger, Aris Barend adding the extras.

Unable to make progress by taking on the visitors head-on, the Brakkies switched tactics, with Louw peppering the visitors with penalties at every opportunity.

The second half was more of the same, with Barend finishing off a scintillating run by his eighth man, Henro Kotze, to regain the lead for Hopefield.

But Louw had ice in his veins and continued to punish the visitors with his boot, slotting kicks from all angles and nailing the winning kick with five minutes left on the clock.

On Saturday, the action continued with the kinds of thrills provided in Friday’s main event.

Worcester Gimnasium outplayed Tygerberg, with four tries between the duo of Wilfred Slinger and Waylan Pienaar seeing the Gimmies to victory after the teams had been locked at 15-15 at halftime.

The Tigers struck first through their captain, Thurlow Goodhart, who ran in a double, but they were kept scoreless in the second half as Worcester added nine more points to secure the win.

Esselenpark scored a couple of beautiful tries to stay in the game against Piketberg, with their eighth man, Keaton van der Hanse, giving them a 19-15 lead at half-time.

The big boys from Piketberg regrouped in the second half, however, with hooker, Zander Jordaan, charging over for his second try and 8th-man, Jasper Smit, causing havoc with his powerful carries and huge hits on defence.

  • Boland Landbou edges thriller in George

    Boland Landbou (Photo provided)

Outeniqua fell to a second successive defeat on Saturday, against the mighty farmers from Boland Landbou, but the visitors had to sweat to hold on to their narrow lead in George.

Watch all the action again on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to the game

Last weekend, Noordheuwel exacted retribution by beating the Kwaggas 28-19 at their 101-Year Festival, after losing to the side from George in 2023.

On Saturday, Boland also got one back against the boys from Outeniqua to avenge their 15-18 loss in Paarl in 2022.

The visitors struck first, against the run of play, when Jayden Brits and Enslin Claassen combined on the counterattack to send Brits over for the first score of the game.

His opposite number, Ellie Meyer, reduced the deficit for Outeniqua and exchanged penalty goals with the visiting flyhalf, Retagan van Rooi, to bring the score to 10-6 at halftime.

The home team kept battering at Boland’s defences, but they could not find a way through. They also defended well to contain the visitors, and it was a back-and-forth for large parts of the game.

Boland Landbou eventually prised open the hosts’ defence when Van Rooi sent over the big flanker, Karst Smits, in the second half to stretch their lead to 15-6. With 13 minutes remaining the game, they had to defend for dear life.

Meyer and his flyhalf, Andrew Stopforth, were prominent for the home team in the final stanza, with Outeniqua putting the visitors under immense pressure as the game drew towards its conclusion.

With just 10 minutes remaining, Stopforth stormed over for Outeniqua’s only try and Meyer reduced the deficit to two points with the extras.

With their tails up, the Kwaggas kept asking questions of Boland Landbou right up to the final whistle, but the visitors stood firm and repelled their attacks.

Unlike the last time these two met, there would be no last-minute winner, with the Boland boys confidently seeing out the remainder of the match to add a second hard-fought win to their record for the season.

Juan Kleinhans powered his way over the line in the final moments, but the visitors’ defence around the ruck remained sharp to the very end and they managed to prevent the big prop from grounding the ball, which brought the contest to a thrilling close.

Last weekend, at the AFGRI-Sports Day, the Bolanders were made to work hard for a 29-18 win over Milnerton. They will look forward to taking next weekend off before they head to the St John’s Easter Festival in Johannesburg at the end of the month.

Outeniqua will aim to bounce back immediately at the NMI Toyota North-South Rugby Tournament in Pretoria where they will face Pretoria Boys High and Menlopark.
