Five Drostdy Donkeys have been selected for this year’s Craven Week team, underlining the proud Worcester institution’s dominance in the region.

Aljay Skippers, Bernedict George, MJ van der Westhuizen, Marcus Lee and RW Duggan will represent Drostdy at the prestigious event, while three more – Josh Fourie, Stefan van der Merwe and Tertius Wantenaar – have been chosen for the Academy Week squad.

Swartland’s big hooker, Kallie Boutsikaris, will be lining up alongside the Drostdy boys at the Craven Week, but until then all focus will be on this weekend’s clash.

The visitors will also be looking to their dynamic fullback Nicholai Miggel and their exciting inside centre Carlo van der Merwe to unlock the Drostdy defence, but they’ll have to be at their best to contain the home team’s massive firepower.

Meanwhile, Stellenberg visits Somerset West to take on the Parel Vallei Bulldogs.

Last year, the Jade Brigade rolled to a decisive 60-5 victory, but the Bulldogs will aim to take full advantage of the home crowd’s support this weekend.

With exciting young talents, Luchen Meyer, Iviwe Majingo and Shudley Rhoda in their ranks, the home side has what it takes to cause an upset.

After a difficult start to the season, Stellenberg have found their rhythm and they’re looking better with every outing.

The battle between the two no. 8s, Renato Tosi and Dale du Toit, is bound to be a highlight of Saturday’s game.

With powerful ballcarriers like Estian Steyn, Dehan Neethling and Almero Keizer driving the visitors’ attack, the PV defence will have to stand strong to avoid a repeat of last season’s result.

Boland Landbou t. SACS om 12:30 – Skakel na die wedstryd

Boland Lanbdou: 15 Lyle Lewis, 14 Wehan Lume, 13 Xavier Vorster, 12 Juan Swart, 11 Enslin Claasen, 10 Pieter Bergh, 9 Jayden Brits, 8 Daniel Blom, 7 Blake de Kock, 6 Hans Verster, 5 Ruan Viviers, 4 Chad Meintjies, 3 Henry Rudder, 2 Thiaan van Zyl, 1 Derick du Preez.

SACS: 15 Jack Benade, 14 Quewinn Lackay, 13 Nic Reynolds, 12 Matt Carrick, 11 Endi Sidinile, 10 Rayaan Solomons, 9 Max Bester, 8 Daniel Grant, 7 Qawe Sawuka, 6 Zac Wilson, 5 Pierre van Selm, 4 Callum Hirst, 3 Ikhona Maxegwana, 2 Sango Zangqa, 1 Ethan Combrink.

    Grey-kollege t. Monument om 15:00

Grey-kollege: 15 Heinz Stockenström, 14 Pretorius Ekeji, 13 Thristan Maree, 12 Pieter van der Merwe, 11 Ruben Cilliers, 10 Alzeadon Felix, 9 Philip McLaren, 8 Liam Santos, 7 Juliun Cosmo, 6 Xander Smit, 5 AJ Meyer, 4 Marcel Coetzee, 3 Danie Kruger, 2 Liam van Wyk, 1 Dian Venter.

Monument: 15 Hanu Fourie, 14 Kealan Milton, 13 Jason Joubert, 12 Theuns du Plooy, 11 Ernesto Oersen, 10 Cruz La Moer, 9 Hanno du Toit, 8 Vincent Robberts, 7 RJ Barnard, 6 Jamaal Feldman, 5 Nathan Erasmus, 4 Jacques Botha, 3 Juandre Marais, 2 Keenan Myners, 1 Wikus Meyer.

  • Wynberg ready to tackle Paul Roos, Gimmies on the farm in Riversdal

    Photo: Charmaine Sander

Wynberg Boys’ High takes on the most in-form team in the country when they travel to face Paul Roos Gimnasium on Saturday.

Both teams have enjoyed stellar seasons thus far, but the Maroon Machine is yet to meet its match despite a gruelling run of fixtures against some of the country’s finest sides.

Wynberg shot out of the blocks early in the season but has recently dropped games against their arch-rivals Rondebosch Boys’ High, 27-49, and Boland Landbou, 10-32.

Despite the losses, however, there can be no doubt that this Wynberg outfit is more than capable of competing against the best, as they showed in memorable wins over the likes of Paarl Boys’ High and St Andrew’s College earlier in the year.

Flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed has been exceptional for the southern suburbs’ side and, up front, captain Aden da Costa, Torren February and Jamie Stride have also been causing their opponents headaches.

PRG will not take the challenge lightly at all, and Riley Norton and his men will be ready for a battle come Saturday.

They start without two of their star loose-forwards, Reuben Kruger and Gert Kemp, but their dual-SA Schools’ star, Norton, seamlessly switches from second row to flank, alongside Malan Erasmus and Christiaan Kolbe.

Last week’s heroes in their 23-17 victory over Paarl Gimnasium, props Hendry du Plessis and Oliver Reid, the livewire scrumhalf Adeeb Boraine, and their midfield maestro Joshua Dampies, are all on post for the Stellenbosch outfit and will be focused on finishing the term strongly.

Last year, the sides did not meet after their game was cancelled due to bad weather conditions, but the last time they played in Stellenbosch, in 2022, the Maroon Machine came out on top 32-19.

Meanwhile, Paarl Gimnasium travels to Riversdal to take on high-flying Oakdale Landbou. It should be a cracking contest.

Oakdale asserted their dominance in the South Western Districts (SWD) last weekend when they stormed to a 60-8 victory over their rivals, Hoërskool Outeniqua. They’ve been setting the pace in the region this season and their success has not gone unnoticed as they have 11 players in the SWD Craven Week squad.

Paarl Gim has two losses on their record this season, but they only narrowly missed out against arguably the two front-runners in the country.

Last week, they fell short against Paul Roos by six points and, earlier, Grey College edged past the Gimmies by two points in a 29-27 thriller.

The battle between the two monster packs this weekend is sure to provide fireworks, with exciting young Oakdale talents, Kai Pratt, Tiaan Turck and Gustav van der Merwe, lining up against one of the most impressive front rows in the country, Ely Williams, JJ du Preez and Dawie Stemmet.

The home team’s captain, Kurt Coetzee, has been immense for Oakdale at centre and will have to deliver another strong performance if the farmers are to upset the Gimmies on Saturday.

  • Charlies at Stellenbosch on Friday, Milnerton and Brackenfell meet under lights

    PHOTO: Lunchbox Photography

As the second term exams approach and selected players begin preparing for the respective youth weeks, which take place in June, there are still a couple of mouth-watering fixtures on the weekend’s Western Cape menu.

The action kicks off on Friday with Charlie Hofmeyr seeking to extend their unbeaten run at Hoërskool Stellenbosch. Later in the evening, Brackenfell takes on Milnerton in what is sure to be another exciting matchup.

Both have both provided many of the season’s highlights, and they will be anxious to get back on the winning track as soon as possible after suffering defeats on the past weekend.

A spectacular start to their season saw Millies take down two southern suburbs giants with stunning come-from-behind victories.

Trailing by 3-33 on the Tinkie Heyns, they fought back to beat Rondebosch Boys’ High, 34-33. In their match against Bishops Diocesan College on the Piley Rees, Millies stormed to a 31-28 victory after a solid start by Bishops had the hosts leading 28-10.

Last weekend, though, Milnerton were well beaten by SACS on the Memorial Field, going down 19-59. They’ll be anxious to notch another win before the holiday break.

Their opponents from Brackenfell have posed a unique challenge to all of their opponents, however.

Despite ending second best against Hoërskool Durbanville last weekend, losing 21-31, they have also played their part in some thrilling games this season, often upsetting bigger name opponents with their never-say-die attitude and exciting brand of rugby.

Junior Louw slots back into the flyhalf position for the Brakkies this week, with Alldrick Johnson moving to outside centre, where he will have a massive task alongside Yibonge Malote in defending the Millies’ pair of captain Frank Hitimana and Litha Tasana.

Louw and Johnson have both excelled in the no. 10 jersey this season and, with talented finishers like Cwenga Ntsapho and Migile Carelse on the wings, the visitors’ backline has more than enough in the tank to keep up with Milnerton’s dangermen.

With the experienced scrumhalf Devon Damons directing the attack for the hosts, however, the Brakkies will need to be at their best to contain the Milnerton challenge.

Up front, the battle between the likes of Sheldan Puma and Graigan Matroos will likely play a decisive role, too. Matroos was one of the try-scorers last season when Brackenfell beat Milnerton 36-29 after trailing 17-24 at half time.

The proud northern suburb rivals are well-matched across their ranks and that makes it probable that they will deliver one of the games of the weekend.

Meanwhile, Charlie Hofmeyr defends their unblemished record when they tackle Hoërskool Stellenbosch in Stellenbosch.

Last year, in Ceres, Charlies ran through the Stellies’ outfit, cruising to 66-5 victory. This weekend, however, they’ll be without some of their stars, including their captain and Boland Craven Week flyhalf Luan Giliomee and their try-hungry inside centre Philip du Plessis, who has also been selected for the regional team.

Tyrone Davids steps up to captain the side in Giliomee’s absence, with Jay-Jay Janse, at flyhalf, serving as vice-captain.

They have a target on their backs, though, and Hoërskool Stellenbosch will relish an opportunity to make a statement by upsetting Charlies.

Matthayo September, Jordan Leigh February, Romario Kivido, Christiaan Bredell, Cainen Erwee, Rushin Muller and Ronwill Abrahams all have first-hand experience of last year’s defeat in Ceres and will be motivated to cause an upset on Friday as the home side tries to turn the tables.

Lohenzel Jansen, Luan Giliomee, Petrus Coetzee, and Christiaan Kershoff form a core group of experienced players who were part of last year’s tournament.

Armand Croeser and Brett Arendse have graduated from the 2023 Academy Week team and will be itching to show off their skills on the big stage.

Giliomee has captained Charlie Hofmeyr with distinction this year, often unlocking their opponents’ defences with the help of his lively inside centre, Philip du Plessis, who has also been selected for the Boland team.

Charlies started the game strongly, outscoring the visitors 17-9 in the first half after tries by Izha-vin van Wyk and Daniel Bakkes.

Swartland’s outstanding centre, Carlo van der Merwe, kept them within striking range, with his educated boot contributing 17 points to his side’s total off the kicking tee.

After the break, Kailen Kotze and Tyrese Barlow scored tries for the visitors, and Van der Merwe drove them into a 24-20 lead with 20 minutes left to play.

The home team’s electric inside centre, Philip du Plessis, regained the lead for Charlies in the 58th minute, combining with Giliomee for the umpteenth time this season to unlock the defence.

When Van der Merwe levelled the scores again, with less than five minutes to play, it looked like the visitors might secure a draw, but Giliomee stepped up to take the winning kick from within his own half.

Giliomee, in an earlier interview with SuperSport Schools Plus, had said he admired Handré Pollard‘s ability to land clutch kicks under pressure. On Saturday, he emulated the Springbok flyhalf’s excellence in the biggest moments.

Meanwhile, a spirited second-half-comeback saw Bellville THS claim a spectacular win against Parel Vallei.

The Somerset West outfit led 19-5 at halftime, having executed their set pieces well while sticking to their structures.

The Bellville boys kept hammering away at the visitors, though, and a hat-trick by their livewire outside centre, Gladewyne Magala, brought them back into the contest in the second stanza.

The halfback pairing of Conner Smith and Chad Rinquest was equally exciting, with both going over for five-pointers, and Smith struck a magnificent drop goal to give his team a 29-27 lead with about three minutes to go.

Porterville‘s big no. 8, Joshua Steenkamp, also crossed for three tries as they thumped Jan van Riebeeck 76-3.

Robertson kept their impressive run of form alive with a 49-32 victory over Hermanus.

Jaydan van Niekerk starred at flyhalf for the Robbies again, and their nippy winger, Winsor de Koker, breached the Hermanus defence twice to help drive his side to victory.

Melkbosstrand had just enough to edge past Hottentots-Holland 18-17 in another thriller on Saturday.

The stage had been set for an exciting weekend of schoolboy rugby on Friday evening, when Worcester Gimnasium and Hoërskool Strand battled to a 31-31 stalemate.

The contest might not have produced a winner, but it did produce another magnificent display of the exciting running brand of rugby both schools take pride in, and their supporters were entertained to the final moments.

Strand’s fiery flanker, Ashraf Fanie, scored twice to help them fight back from a 17-31 deficit.

The Gouties fought valiantly to hold Welkom Gim within range during the first half through the boot of their flyhalf, Ruben Crous.

Ronaldo Kiewiet added another hattrick to his exceptional try-scoring record for the black jerseys, however, and Welkom Gim tightened the screws in the second half to storm to a 48-9 victory.

With 11 players in this year’s provisional Griffons Craven Week team, Welkom Gimnasium has set the pace in the region this season, and they will be the heavy favourites when entering the playoff stages next term.

Apart from Kiewiet, Kananelo Tutubala, Zander Olivier, Bokang Lesenyeho, Ethan Jones and Dyllan Kemp all crossed the Goutie try line to the delight of the home supporters.

Hoërskool Trio weathered a spirited Hentie Cilliers‘ attack to score a hard-fought 26-22 victory.

Trio managed the game well from the start, with their flyhalf Byron Biennas pulling the strings from the midfield.

By halftime, the hosts had accrued a 15-3 lead, but the side from Virginia showed excellent fighting spirit to outscore Trio 19-11 in the second half.

Tries by Ashwon Mellen, Xander Wiltshire and Mosa Sesedi drove Henties to a 22-18 lead with only five minutes left to play, but another penalty by Biennas and a last-minute try by Jayden Windvogel grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat for the proud Kroonstad outfit.

Completely against the run of play, the industrious winger hacked through a loose ball from his own goal line and outpaced the Henties’ defenders to score a dramatic winner for Trio.

Landboudal continued their impressive run of form on the farm in Jacobsdal to take down Jim Fouché, 31-17.

The first 35 minutes was a closely contested battle, but the home team surged to victory in the second half, with their nippy winger, Jannie de Waal, diving in for two tries.

Fichardtpark also continued building on their recent good form with a second win of the week.

After a 36-14 triumph over HTS Louis Botha in a midweek clash, the Fichies surged to a 43-22 victory over Hoërskool Burgersdorp on Saturday.

Duan Viviers crossed the whitewash twice for the Bloemfontein boys.
