Noordheuwel broke the Kwaggas’ hearts at the Outeniqua 101-Year Sports Day, beating the home team 29-18 on Saturday in the final match of an action-packed day of rugby in George.

When the sides met at the event last year, Outeniqua’s centenary squad kicked off their season with an 18-14 victory, but Noordheuwel was set on revenge when they returned this weekend.

The Nories’ talisman flyhalf, Jeandré Uithaler, opened their account early on with a penalty, but it was his lightning-quick winger, Lindsey Jansen, who crossed the whitewash first following an interception.

Jenemo Luiters (winger) followed suit at the other end of the field, diving over in the corner to give the visitors a 15-point buffer.

It took 26 minutes for Outeniqua to find their bearings, but when they finally did Ruan van Rensburg replied after a rolling maul.

Further tries by Keenan Jantjies (centre) and Gareth Maree (eighth man) got the hosts to within two points at one stage, but Noordheuwel’s electric centre, Cheswill Jooste, dealt the final blow with a try on the hooter to seal a win for his side.

The farmers, Framesby and Oakdale Landbou, recorded solid victories over Brackenfell and Ligbron Akademie respectively.

Brackenfell’s nippy little fullback, Zane van Schalkwyk, scored a brace to secure some pride for the Capetonians, but a stellar performance by Eden Calitz (flanker) and co for Framesby drove their side to a convincing victory.

Hooker, Ewald Muller, and flyhalf, Logan Muller, also stood out for the Gqeberha outfit.

Oakdale kept the visitors from Ermelo from scoring, while their stalwarts from last season, Kurt Coetzee (centre) and Duraan Janse van Rensburg (winger) both crossed the line for the side from Riversdal. Young guns Gustav van der Merwe (hooker), Lohan Gerber (eighth man), Kai Pratt (prop) and Lee-Winn Pretorius (winger) also added five-pointers as Oakdale scored a resounding win.

Worcester Gimnasium, who made waves last season with their exciting running brand of rugby, looked to their loosehead prop to spearhead their attack on Saturday. Armaan Adendorff crossed for two of their three tries as they ran in 21 unanswered points against Langenhoven Gimnasium.

It was a day for the forwards, it seems, as the big tighthead prop, Kian Rademeyer, muscled over for a hat-trick for Pearson when they outplayed Bredasdorp to run up a huge 71-7 victory.

A moment of magic by Bredasdorp’s flyhalf, Urlinn Henecke, got his side on the board, but it was one-way traffic throughout most of the match.

Somerset West’s representative, Parel Vallei, started the day with a bang, beating Oudtshoorn 25-7.

Michael Kent, the victors’ scrumhalf, crossed the try line twice and were it not for a bit of quick thinking by his opposite number, Ronaldo Prins, to send his fullback Imiel Viljoen over in the second half, they would have kept their opponents scoreless.

Shudley Roda, the PV flyhalf, also played a big part in his side’s success, dotting down a try of his own and adding two conversions and a penalty to their total.

They play a final pre-season friendly next weekend before returning to the Garden Route to face Oakdale in Riversdal.

  • Exciting lineup for Outeniqua’s 101 Year Festival this weekend

Exciting lineup for Outeniqua’s 101 Year Festival this weekend

GEORGE, SOUTH AFRICA – JULY 22: Dewald Gerber of Outeniqua in the tackle during the Sportsmans Warehouse Premier Interschools rugby match between Hoerskool Outeniqua and Paarl Gimnasium at Hoerskool Outeniqua on July 22, 2023 in George, South Africa. (Photo by Ashley Vlotman/Gallo Images)

The Garden Route will be treated to some exciting schoolboy rugby to kick off the new season at Outeniqua’s 101 Year Sports Festival.

The Kwaggas take on Noordheuwel in the final match of the day, where they will hope to start the season in a similar fashion to the manner in which they began their centenary last year, with a win over a highly rated opponent.

Watch the games live on SuperSport Shools – Register now Link to the festival

Seven players will debut for the home team on Saturday, but the squad is balanced out by the experience of the likes of Michael Cronje, who has 24 caps to his name already.

Captain Luca Potgieter was also a mainstay in the 1st XV last season, and along with Juan Kleinhans, Ruart Curtlewis, Ellie Meyer, Andrew Stopforth and Keenan Jantjies, will help the newcomers transition to the intensity of first team rugby.

Meyer came on as a substitute last year to slot the winning penalty against a fired-up Stellenberg as Outeniqua claimed a narrow 10-8 victory at Kwagga Park.

Their first challenge comes in the form of the NWU Prestige and NWU Sevens champions of 2023, Noordheuwel. The Nories also gave the SDC Noordvaal champions, Garsfontein, a run for their money when the two met last year, falling just short and going down 28-30.

Last weekend, they recorded a 20-12 victory over Hoërskool Trio in Kroonstad, where their dynamic flyhalf Jeandré Uithaler controlled the game for his side.

Far from being a one-man team, though, the Nories are filled with dynamic players in their backline, including Jade Muller, Jenemo Luiters, Cheswill Jooste, Jared Coetzee and Lindsey Jansen, who have demonstrated an ability to punish any team when given space.

In a match that promises to be a thriller, Framesby and Brackenfell tackle each other in the penultimate game, which pits the Eastern Cape against the Western Cape.

Oakdale Landbou starts a challenging season against Ligbron Akademie, from Ermelo.

The Riversdal farmers have retained some of their standout players from last season, including Waylon Kortjie, Kurt Coetzee, Duraan Janse van Rensburg and Roy Viljoen, who will be eager to start their campaign with a bang on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, clashes between Pearson and Bredasdorp, Langenhoven Gimnasium and Worcester Gimnasium, as well as the opener between Oudtshoorn and Parel Vallei, promise exciting action.

Logan Jantjies excelled for Oudtshoorn last year when he was selected for the SWD Craven Week team – the only player not from either Outeniqua or Oakdale – despite heavy competition for his position of 8th-man from some of the bigger local schools.

His head coach, Walt Böhme, has also recently been announced as the head coach of this year’s SWD Craven Week team after several years of serving as an assistant coach, so Oudtshoorn should be an exciting squad to keep an eye on this season.

Saterdag se interskole beloof inderdaad ‘n dag propvol opwindende rugby.

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

  • Milnerton pak Boland Landbou by AFGRI-Rugbydag

  • Diamonds, Wit Bulle slaags in Kimberley

    FOTO: Asjas Fotos

Bishops ready for their 175th anniversary season with a new TIC of Rugby

In 2024, Bishops Diocesan College embarks on an eagerly anticipated journey, with the spotlight shining brightly on the esteemed institution’s rugby programme. The anticipation for their special 175th anniversary season is palpable as they gear up for a year brimming with significant milestones and formidable challenges.

After an impressive 17-year tenure at Bishops as a maths teacher, Ronald Jacobs assumes the mantle of Teacher in Charge of Rugby, ushering in a new era for the school. He has served as the House Director of Ogilvie House since 2017, and he brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for the sport as he steers Bishops towards further excellence in its rugby endeavours.

A rugby man, through and through, Jacobs’s journey in coaching spans over three decades, beginning after a stint when he represented Western Province as a player in the early nineties. Notably, he graced the field in a historic encounter against a SARU XV, led by Allister Coetzee, on 14 September 1991, marking the end of an era where national-representative teams were segregated by race and ideology.

Throughout his tenure, Jacobs has played an active role in Bishops’ rugby, guiding the u16 B team before assuming leadership of the 2nd XV for six years.

Now, as the Teacher in Charge of Rugby at the proud school, he says he is feeling positive about the direction they are moving in.

“Two years ago, we organised a rugby committee, with the goal of getting the level of rugby at Bishops to where we want it to be. This is the second year of the three-year programme that was put into place, and I can tell you there have been some major shifts. Not necessarily only in the results, but there has been a tangible change to the spirit surrounding rugby at the school”.

With great hopes for the coming season, the Bishops’ 1st XV will rely on the experience of some of the side’s more seasoned players.

James Le Feuvre and Alex Smith return from last year’s squad and will share the captaincy responsibilities in 2024. They’re further bolstered by the likes of Kashief Joseph, Lucca Mynhardt and Alex Newton, who also donned the trademark numberless first-team jerseys last season.

This year holds special significance for Diocesan College as it commemorates its 175th anniversary and, as part of the celebrations, the school will host a grand rugby festival from 20 to 23 March.

“It’s going to be a big one,” said Jacobs, “We have the likes of Michaelhouse, St Andrew’s College, Kingswood, Grey High and Hilton, joining along with our local rivals. We expect more than 1400 rugby players strutting their stuff over those four days.”

Guiding the squad through this landmark season is head coach Wes Chetty, who brings a wealth of experience to the post, having played over 100 games for the Ikey Tigers. Chetty inherited the role at Bishops from Dave Mallet in 2018, when, former Leinster and Connacht prop, Stephen Knoop served as Bishops’ scrum guru.

Assisting him are coaches Sam Mofokeng and Tank Lanning, alongside specialists Mika Schubert and Uzair Saban.

Apart from the experienced core group of players, there are also exciting prospects with a rich rugby pedigree available for the first team this year.

Former Stormers hooker, Jan van den Heever‘s son, Daniel van den Heever will be vying for his place in the squad alongside Arran Muir, whose uncle is the legendary World Cup-winning Springbok fullback, André Joubert.

The eagerly anticipated clashes against Bishops’ arch-rivals Rondebosch Boys’ High promise to be among the highlights of the season, building on an intense rivalry between the two institutions.

In 2023, Bishops clinched a memorable victory in their first encounter, thanks to a moment of magic by their SA Schools A team fullback Gilermo Mentoe, which secured a 13-8 victory.

As expected, though, their rivals were set on revenge in the return fixture on the Piley Rees and they broke the home team’s hearts with a converted try in the final seconds of the match to score a nail-biting 36-35 victory.

This year, more than ever, Bishops will be eager to do the double over their peninsular opponents to celebrate a milestone year. They end their season at Rondebosch, but August still feels like a long way away, especially since they start the season with a rush of six games in less than three weeks.

Local rivals, Worcester Gimnasium and HTS Drostdy, set the tone with impressive twin-victories on Saturday. The Donkeys stampeded past Schoonspruit, registering a commanding 35-5 win, and followed that up with dominant 65-0 thrashing of Melkbosstrand.

Meanwhile, Worcester Gimnasium mirrored their neighbours’ successes, securing two wins, albeit by much smaller margins, against the same opponents. A hard-fought 15-5 triumph over Melkbosstrand preceded a narrow victory over Schoonspruit.

Lhangquin de Bruyn (flyhalf), Lukewin van Heerden (centre) and Lorenzo Harmse (fullback) scored the first tries of the season in Worcester Gim’s first outing. They will be seeking a repeat of last year’s successes, when they turned many a head by outclassing some of their strongest opponents.

HTS Drostdy faces a tougher challenge in their next fixture on Saturday, when they square off against Stellenberg .

The Gimmies are set to continue their pre-season fixtures with a tour to George, where they’ll clash with Langenhoven Gimnasium at the Hoërskool Outeniqua 101 Year Sports Day.

Swartland also remained unbeaten at the weekend’s event, edging out Brackenfell by a 13-10 margin, before running in 48 unanswered points against Worcester Secondary.
