  • Elkington snares five in 100th match for Grey High

Xander Elkington (Grey High School) after playing in his 100th match and taking five wickets (Photo provided)

In his milestone 100th first-team appearance, Grey High School‘s Xander Elkington delivered a masterful performance by dismissing five St Andrew’s College batsmen on the weekend.

Elkington’s contribution underlined his exceptional season for Grey, where his all-round prowess has often been the linchpin of the team’s successes.

From the outset, the Grey boys exhibited ferocious intent, with Likhona Gcora setting the tone by knocking back the stumps of the first two Saint Andrew’s batsmen in quick succession.

Mitchell Coventry resisted, striking back-to-back boundaries, as he contributed 27 runs before he was caught by Joel Maree.

Elkington, however, tore through the Makhanda school’s batting lineup to capture 5/19 in eight overs, and St Andrew’s slumped to only 76 all out in their first innings.

With Grey at the crease, Roman van Zyl struck early to reduce them 19/2 after the first 10 overs. However, Marco Giaconi constructed a fine innings of 52 runs to steer his side past their opponents’ first innings’ total.

When Oliver Johns finally got rid of Giaconi, Josh Rennie took over and helped Grey to an imposing 213/8 before declaring.

Rennie worked hard for his undefeated 54 runs, hitting four boundaries while working the ball around for singles at every opportunity, and Kian Cambier and Joel Maree weighed in with 31 apiece.

Towards the end of the Grey innings, Tristan Grundling hammered the only six of the innings in his knock of 20, which helped extend Grey’s lead to 137 runs.

William Beamish (49) began the second innings for St Andrew’s on a positive note. He struck two sixes and five fours before Zander Nutt trapped him in front of his wickets, tantalisingly close to a half-century.

Nutt was on a tear and claimed the three wickets that fell for only five runs while also sending down four maiden overs. Oliver Johns and Samuel Scheckter then shut up shop to prevent St Andrew’s going down to an outright defeat.

    Summarised Scorecards

St Andrew’s College first innings 76 (Mitchell Coventry 27; Xander Elkington 5/19, Likhona Gcora 2/8, Tristan Grundling 2/26); Grey High School first innings 213/8 (Josh Rennie 54*, Marco Giaconi 52, Kian Cambier 31, Joel Maree 31, Tristan Grundling 20; Roman van Zyl 2/15, Alastair de Kock 2/20, Laurie Apps 2/84); St Andrew’s College second innings 70/3 (William Beamish 49; Zander Nutt 3/5). Grey High School won on first innings.

Queen’s College 170 (Bevaneo Maytham 80, Connor Oelofse 22; Jacques van der Merwe 2/24, Bungqina Nuku 2/29, Adam Rogers 2/54); Selborne College 94/6 (Tré Gilbert 31, Reece Wait 26; Bevaneo Maytham 2/13, Ryan Denston 2/24). Match abandoned.

  • Noordheuwel lewer “Uithaler-spel” by Trio-sportdag

  • Somerset College reclaim The Ashes Trophy with dominant win over Parel Vallei

Somerset College 1st XI after reclaiming The Ashes (Photo provided)

Last year, David Botes led Parel Vallei to a first victory over Somerset College in 21 years of playing for The Ashes, but the Somerset boys wasted no time restoring order when the sides met again on the weekend.

The annual two-day derby has been a highlight of the cricketing calendar in Somerset West for more than two decades now, and the Collegians backed up their dominant record in the event by trouncing Parel Vallei by an innings and 94 runs on Saturday.

Their opening duo, Chad Ayford and the young Owethu Moyi, put their side on the front foot from the off with an aggressive start to their innings.

Ayford raced to 30, off only 21 deliveries, before Josua Smit and Henry Jones combined to remove the visitors’ dangerman. Moyi (45), however, continued the positive start, striking nine boundaries, while Eden Scott (25) and captain, Tyrone Rieth (22) added useful scores.

Christopher Hughes took full advantage of the helpful pitch to get rid of four Somerset batsmen and keep the run rate in check, but his namesake from Somerset College, Callum Hughes, took control of the match when he stepped to the crease.

Batting in difficult conditions, he scored a match-defining 91 runs and helped advance the total to 247/8, which is when the visitors declared.

Hughes was soon back into the thick of the action, opening the bowling alongside Thomas Parsons, who has taken in excess of 100 wickets for the Somerset 1st XI during his time in the side.

The duo picked off the Parel Vallei openers before Hughes was given a rest after his long batting stint. This led to the introduction of Chad Ayford and Tyler Crafford to the attack, and they tore through the hosts’ lineup, dismissing them for a dismal 49 before choosing to enforce the follow-on.

Crafford snared five PV batters for only 20 runs, while Ayford needed only 20 deliveries to snare 3/5.

The next day, the Somerset management changed their tactics, using Troy Varie and Daniel Kaplan to open their bowling, with great success.

Employing an extremely attacking field, with short leg and short cover under helmets and right up to the crease, the visiting side cut through Parel Vallei’s lineup once again.

Ethan Simpson (20) provided some resistance at the very end of the Parel Vallei innings, but Kaplan captured 6/34 as Somerset College secured a convincing victory and closed out their season by reclaiming the coveted Ashes trophy.

    Scores

Somerset College first innings 247/8 (Callum Hughes 91, Owethu Moyi 45, Chad Ayford 30, Eden Scott 25, Tyrone Rieth 22; Christopher Hughes 4/49, Josua Smit 2/72); Parel Vallei first innings 49/10 (Christopher Hughes 11; Tyler Crafford 5/20, Chad Ayford 3/5); Parel Vallei second innings 104/10 (Ethan Simpson 20; Daniel Kaplan 6/34, Callum Hughes 2/21). Somerset College won by an innings and 94 runs.

  • Rondebosch turn the tables in BishBosch declaration match

Rondebosch First XI, 2024 (Photo provided)

Rondebosch Boys’ High reclaimed the BishBosch bragging rights on Saturday with a spectacular victory over a Bishops Diocesan College side that has set the pace all season long.

Punishing the Bishops bowlers on the Frank Reid Oval, the visiting batsmen smashed a total of 32 boundaries, with 14 flying all the way for the maximum, as they posted a solid 267 all out in 62 overs.

Nathan Ball set Rondebosch on their way with a well-struck 40 off of 87 deliveries, despite early successes for Tiaan Louw and Waco Bassick, which restricted ‘Bosch to 21/2 in the early going.

Declan Gillespie joined Ball at the crease and their partnership bolstered the Rondebosch total by a further 109 runs before Bassick struck again.

Gillespie’s 77 runs from 87 balls gave his side the boost it needed to take control of the match, but it was Joshua Neill, batting at seven, who dealt a knockout blow to the home team.

He charged to 88 off only 75 deliveries, while blasting seven sixes along the way. When Louw finally sent Neill packing – his third wicket, which brought the innings to an end – Neill and co had amassed a healthy total to defend.

Bassick snared five wickets for 43 runs to lead the bowling figures for Bishops, as he and Louw have done throughout the season. The heavy hitters from Rondebosch, however, had put their side in a strong position as the hosts came out to bat.

Bishops’ outstanding opening pair, Adnaan Lagadien (44) and Kashief Joseph (25) gave the hosts a solid start but, when Tim Short removed both batsmen, a batting collapse followed.

Daniel Bosman (3/31) and Short each accounted for three Diocesan College batsmen, and Nathan Ball backed up his fine innings by taking two wickets without conceding a single run in four overs.

Hlumelo Mweba then trapped the final Bishops’ batsman in front with the first delivery of the 51st over to give Rondebosch Boys’ High a massive boost at the end of their season, with a sweet victory over their rivals, who have enjoyed a dream-season.

Meanwhile, Wynberg Boys’ High had to settle for a draw against SACS despite their captain, Beni Hansen (93) and Divan Linde (83) leading their team to an imposing 268/7.

SACS were on the ropes at 186/8 with six overs left to play, but failing light meant the match had to be abandoned before Luke Kleinsmith (3/24) and co could finish the job.

    Summarised Scorecards

Rondebosch Boys’ High 267 (Joshua Neill 88, Declan Gillespie 77, Nathan Ball 40, David Simon 21; Waco Bassick 5/43, Tiaan Louw 3/61); Diocesan College 130 (Adnaan Lagadien 44, Kashief Joseph 25; Tim Short 3/23, Daniel Bosman 3/31, Nathan Ball 2/0). Rondebosch Boys’ High won by 137 runs.

Wynberg Boys’ High School 268/7 (Beni Hansen 93, Divan Linde 83, Michail Tarentaal 29; Nicholas Oscroft 4/47, Reece Theunis 2/66); SACS 186/8 (Keiron Bowers 40, Litha Kraai 38, Reece Theunis 27, Luke Whitehead 24, Reza Salie 24; Luke Kleinsmith 3/24, Divan Linde 2/23). Match drawn.

  • Diamonds skitter in sege oor Trekkers

    Puntemakers:

Hoërskool Diamantveld 18 (5) – Drieë: Enrique Boshoff, Carel Viljoen. Doelskop: Simon Liversage. Strafdoel: Liversage, Marno Greeff. Voortrekker 6 (3) – Strafdoele: Christian van der Sandt (2).

    Ander spanne:

  • Durbies and Stellenberg book a title-deciding trilogy

    Stellenberg 1ste XI (Foto verskaf)

After Stellenberg came out on top in their interschools match a couple of weeks ago, and Hoërskool Durbanville hit back during the week to claim the Sammy Bloch Trophy, the rival schools will face each other for a third time when they compete in the Western Province North Zone League final next Saturday.

Xander van Aarde drove the Durbies to victory with a brilliant, undefeated innings of 43 runs at the tail end of their match against Fairmont to secure a heart-stopping one-wicket win.

Meanwhile, Wilhelm Smet‘s 102 not out secured victory for Stellenberg against Edgemead.

With both of their season’s head-to-head encounters being decided by less than 15 runs, the table has been set for a thrilling tie-breaker next weekend.

Edgemead scored 200 runs, batting first, against Stellenberg, with Daniel Haschick doing a lot of the grunt work for his side, compiling 89 runs off of 111 deliveries, before JJ Rothman dismissed him.

Abdullah Muhammad also offered stiff resistance, scoring 31 at a run a ball, which included five boundaries, before Gerrad Kamalie put a stop to his innings.

Kamalie gave the Edgemead lineup fits, capturing 4/29, and he also effected the run-out that closed the book on their innings.

After some early success for Edgemead by Muhammad and Luke Stinton restricted Stellenberg to 47/3, Wilhelm Smet stole the show with a dominant display.

His century, which featured 15 boundaries, two of them maximums, came from only 87 deliveries, and helped Stellies to victory in the 34th over.

Hoërskool Durbanville’s Tobias Roelofse led their attack against Fairmont, claiming four wickets, while adding a catch, too, to help Durbies dismiss Fairmont for 175.

Kyle Maclean was the shining light in the Fairmont lineup, racing to 65 runs off only 47 deliveries before Hugo Bredell sent his stumps flying.

André Neethling (38) led the reply for the Durbanville boys initially, as the top-order mustered 88/3, but Caleb le Roux (4/27) and Byron Garton (2/25) tore big holes in the rest of their batting lineup.

With only one wicket standing, Xander van Aarde produced a stunning 43*, with six boundaries, to see propel his side to victory, thus setting up a highly anticipated third showdown of the season against Stellenberg.

    Summarized Scorecards

Fairmont 175/10 (Kyle Maclean 65, Extras 22, Byron Garton 20; Tobias Roelofse 4/22, Hugo Bredell 2/17); Hoërskool Durbanville 179/9 (Xander van Aarde 43*, André Neethling 38, Jan Kriel 26, Extras 24; Caleb le Roux 4/27, Byron Garton 2/25). Hoërskool Durbanville won by one wicket.

Edgemead 200/10 (Daniel Haschick 89, Abdullah Muhammad 31, Wasseem Fredricks 29; Gerrad Kamalie 4/29, Michael Amoedo 2/16); Stellenberg 201/5 (Wilhelm Smet 102*, Extras 26, Arno Koen 25; Luke Stinton 2/27, Abdullah Muhammad 2/38). Stellenberg won by five wickets.

Hoërskool Bellville 64/10 (Owen Kretschmer 21; D’Neill du Toit 4/16, Keanu Swanepoel 3/5, Benjamin Grobler 2/4); DF Malan 17/10 (Chris Roets 3/7, AD van der Westhuizen 3/8). Hoërskool Bellville won by 47 runs.

Hoërskool Tygerberg 315/10 (Mondré Julies 124, Isaiah Swartz 59, Extras 45, Lee-Charn Koopman 29; Jonah Alexander 3/50, Sesona Numpanga 2/67, Kylo le Roux 3/68); De Kuilen 77/10 (Mondré Julies 6/21, Vaughn Arendse 2/6). Hoërskool Tygerberg won by 238 runs.

    Beknopte telkaart:

Paarl Gimnasium: 146 (Franco Boonzaier 32, Charles King 31, Adriaan Louw 20; Gideon du Toit 3/22, Marco Cato 2/14, Daniel Lombaard 2/34). Hoër Jongenskool Paarl: 150/5 (Dian van der Westhuizen 50, Christiaan Wege 42, JJ van der Sandt 25, Liam Burger 2/16, Louis Koen 2/25). Boishaai wen met vyf paaltjies.

A hat-trick of tries by the lively Grey College hooker, Liam van Wyk, and a dominant second-half performance by the home team saw them to a convincing 52-5 victory over Welkom Gimnasium on Saturday in Bloemfontein.

Watch the game again on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to the tournament

The visiting Gimmies started the game off strongly, thwarting Grey’s initial onslaught, with their talisman Renaldo Kiewiet keeping the hosts at bay with his educated boot.

The Welkom outfit enjoyed plenty of possession in the first 10 minutes and made the Grey defence scramble to keep them from crossing the try line. But it was Van Wyk who opened the scoring with an intercept try as Welkom Gim were mounting an attack. Alzeadon Felix added the extras.

Welkom went straight back on offence, however, and after being held up over the line once, Kganya Molalo (hooker) was able to barrel over to reduce the deficit to two points.

After the first 30 minutes, the momentum started noticeably shifting in favour of the Grey boys, with Pretorius Ekeji (winger) powering through the Welkom defenders to increase Grey’s buffer, before Van Wyk scored his second try of the day.

What was most impressive about the Grey team was how quickly they adjusted to nullify the Welkom attack, and how hard they worked to rectify their own errors.

Dian Venter (prop) offered a strong ball-carrying option, and he and the rest of the forwards were able to gain the upper hand over their opponents up front, which enabled Grey to set the pace in the second half.

Van Wyk completed his hat-trick six minutes after coming back from the break, before more tries by his school captain, Pieter van der Merwe (centre), Philip McLaren (scrumhalf), Ruben Cilliers (winger) and Xander Smit (flanker), powered Grey to a decisive win.

Felix knocked over six out of the eight conversions, some from challenging positions, which bodes well for the Free State side as they prepare to jump into their season in earnest when they travel to Pretoria to compete in the North/South tournament from 22 March.

To their credit, the Gimmies never stopped probing at the Grey defence whenever they had the ball in hand. As soon as Grey settled into their structures, though, it was evident that the Bloemfontein powerhouse will again be a difficult nut to crack this season, as they set out to continue an unbeaten run, which began in 2022.

Welkom will take positives out of their first 20 minutes, and they will endeavour to fix some of the smaller mistakes that broke their rhythm at crucial points. But that was also a by-product of the pressure placed on them by the Grey defenders.

Welkom Gimnasium fronts up to Glenwood in Bethlehem next weekend. Then they travel to Krugersdorp to face Monument before joining Grey at the North/South in Pretoria.

    Scorers

Grey College 52 (21) – Tries: Liam van Wyk (3), Pretorius Ekeji, Pieter van der Merwe, Philip McLaren, Ruben Cilliers, Xander Smit. Conversions: Alzeadon Felix (6) Welkom Gimnasium 5 (5) – Try: Kganya Molalo.
