    Beknopte telkaarte

Hoërskool Diamantveld: 212/5 (Nathan Baird 102, Simon Liversage 78; Stian Kruger 2/41). Hoërskool Fichardtpark: 207/7 (Eben Botha 124, Nathan Ackerman 26; Danie van der Merwe 2/23, Kaiden van Wyk 2/39). Diamantveld wen met vyf lopies.

Grey-kollege: III 111 (Johan Joubert 35; Lian Theron 3/25). Hoërskool Jim Fouché 116/2 (Lian Theron 58, RG Vorster 40; Tamim Alam 2/16). Jim Fouché wen met agt paaltjies.

Grey-kollege II: 213/4 (Dale Williams 87, Muso Mokomela 37*, Pieter Smit 32*, Eddie Mabena 26*, Ekstras 25; AJ Joubert 2/53). Hoërskool Sentraal: 109 (AJ Joubert 34; Lohan Nortjé 4/29, Jonathan Drysdale 3/15, Jano Venter 2/12). Grey-kollege II wen met 104 lopies.

  • Grey College ready to build on their heritage in 2024

Grey College is set to follow up its unbeaten 2023 season with another action-packed list of fixtures in 2024.

Catch all the action live this season on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Boasting the experience of eight players from last year’s unbeaten squad, it appears as if the Bloemfontein powerhouse could continue its unbeaten run this season.

Pieter van der Merwe, Dian Venter, Liam van Wyk, Danie Kruger, Heinrich Theron, Philip McLaren, Emile McGeer, Liam Santos, and Alzeadon Felix pulled on the coveted first-team jersey last year and they will be itching for the opportunity to secure their places this season.

Many exciting young talents – like Ethan Adams, Toriq Schambreel, AJ Meyer, Xander Smit, Jan-Hendrik van der Linde, Thristan Maree, Bernard Wessels, AJ Booysen, Siyabonga Kenny and Adem Nieuwoudt – who stood out at the Grant Khomo Week last year are moving up the age grades and will be knocking on the door of the 1st XV this year, thus ensuring Grey College will, as is so often the case, be the team to beat again.

Smit previously made an impression running out for Grey’s u17 sevens team at the end of last season. Together with Santos, van Wyk, Felix, and McLaren, he helped the Bloem boys secure the High Schools Sevens Series Champions title.

He comes from a proud rugby pedigree. His father, Philip Smit, earned five caps for the Springboks on their northern hemisphere tour in 1997 and also represented the SA sevens team in 1998.

As always, the proud Bloemfontein school continues to attract players from families with rich rugby histories. Heinrich Theron and Benjamin van den Berg are also following in their fathers’ footsteps by picking up the oval ball. Heinrich’s father, Louis, represented the Free State in three matches during the late eighties. Van den Berg’s father JB played centre for the Griffons and the Leopards during his career.

The Grey coaching team remains unchanged from the group that has produced so many successful squads over the last couple of years, with Jannie Geldenhuys leading proceedings. Three of his assistant coaches – Wian du Preez, Tiaan Liebenberg, and Helgard Müller represented the Springboks in their playing career, while Tewis de Bruyn played first-class rugby for the Cheetahs, Leopards, Boland and South Western Districts.

Former first-team player Inus Keyser is responsible for the team’s strength and conditioning, while their team manager is Putu Pretorius.

Last year, Grey had the added advantage of fielding a squad that had already bonded at the World Schools Festival in 2022 where they reached the final despite not fielding any boys in grade 12.

They didn’t attend the festival in 2023, but it would be ill-advised for any of their opponents to expect anything less than a finished product from Grey.

With a brand-new inter-school derby against Paarl Gimnasium awaiting them in April, as well as away games at Oakdale and Paul Roos, Grey College will need to be at their best to emulate the successes of 2023. The Grey boys, however, have long been the standard-setters and it will take a very special performance to dethrone the Free State giants.

They kick off their season at the President Steyn Sports Day on the 24 February where they will field an invitational team against Hoërskool Trio.

Last season, they beat the team from Kroonstad 38-10 in their opening fixture before going on to hand Paarl Gim their only loss of the season. They also outlasted Outeniqua in the Kwaggas’ centenary year in George, and they overpowered Affies, dishing out a record 60-19 hiding in Bloemfontein, as they stormed their way through the best teams in South Africa to be universally recognised as South Africa’s number one.

Garsfontein, who were also among the top sides in 2023, went down 9-23 to Grey at the Wildeklawer Festival, but they’ll get another shot at the Free Staters at this year’s tournament.

As always, Grey College’s season ends with the Paul Roos derby and after beating the boys from Stellenbosch last year without six of their star players, who were missing due to national duties, they will prepare for a battle on the Markötter in August when the Maroon Machine will attempt to return the favour.

  • Somerset College see off challengers from far and wide to lift T20 crown

    Somerset College 2024 (Photo provided)

Somerset College reigned supreme at their home T20 tournament on Sunday, winning two of their three matches, to lay claim to the silverware.

After battling to a stalemate in their two-day match against Framesby, the home team regrouped well and found the energy reserves to see out two more thrillers on Sunday before Outeniqua finally got the better of them in the final game of the weekend.

Firstly, Somerset had to battle hard against Wellington College, from the UK, to open their account with a narrow six-run win.

The prestigious Berkshire school’s recent cricketing alumni include brothers, Sam and Tom Curran, who represent England in all formats. With a history that spans 165 years, many English heroes of the past have also walked the halls of Wellington College.

Chad Ayford provided the hosts with a positive start, smashing five boundaries in a sharp 30 runs from 26 deliveries. Later, Jonno Firth bolstered the Somerset total with a brisk 48 runs off of only 28 balls.

Every run proved vital as Somerset posted their highest total of the day to keep the Englishmen at bay.

Next, the hosts faced Framesby again. After the previous two days of heated competition, a tight contest was expected, but the teams managed to exceed expectations.

Somerset sneaked a victory, scoring the winning runs off the penultimate delivery of the match, with only a wicket to spare, thanks to David de Klerk‘s boundary. It was a spectacular victory, and it secured the T20 title for the home side.

JJ de Lange (58) and Dewan Wessels (47) led Framesby to 158/5 before Troy Varie was unleashed on the visitors.

He knocked over five batsmen in two overs and conceded only three runs, to stymie Framesby’s batting efforts.

Somerset College’s captain, Tyrone Rieth (77), then combined brilliantly with the young Buhle Mfunelwa (25) for a 72-run partnership, which was the cornerstone of the home team’s successful run chase.

Stefan May ripped through the hosts batting’ lineup in their final game, snaring five Somerset batsmen for a miserly eight runs. Then, batting with Daniel du Plessis, he scored the winning runs to secure the Garden Route boys’ first win of the weekend. By then, though, the trophy already belonged to Somerset College.

Even though they ended up tied in the final rankings with the visitors from the UK, Somerset College took the title over Wellington College because of their head-to-head win.

    Summarised Scorecards

Somerset College 165/9 (Jonno Firth 48, Chad Ayford 30, Callum Hughes 20; Alexander Padbury 4/21); Wellington College 159/3 (Toby Barton 62, Edward Campion 43*, Hugo South 24; David de Klerk 1/28). Somerset College won by six runs.

Framesby 158/5 (JJ de Lange 58, Dewan Wessels 47, Extras 24; Troy Varie 5/3); Somerset College 159/9 (Tyrone Rieth 77, Buhle Mfunelwa 25; Juan Grigor 2/22, Juandré Vos 2/23, Logan Fleetwood 2/33). Somerset College won by one wicket.

Somerset College 97 (Chad Ayford 23; Stefan May 5/8, Danie Venter 2/11); Outeniqua 98/2 (Stefan May 40, Daniel du Plessis 27; Troy Varie 1/17). Outeniqua won by eight wickets.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoërskool Jim Fouché: 123 (Arnaud Marais 54, Niel Wilken 33*; Meyer Pretorius 6/34, Nathan Swanepoel 2/22). Hoërskool Sasolburg: 75 (Meyer Pretorius 17; Pieter Conradie 4/20, Henko Venter 3/20). Jim Fouché wen met 48 lopies.

  • Laurie Apps dismantles Queen’s College

    Laurie Apps dismantles Queen’s College

St Andrew’s College witnessed a tour de force performance from Laurie Apps on Saturday, as he dismantled the Queen’s College batting lineup with finesse, capturing seven wickets to propel his side to a commanding six-wicket win in Komani.

Joe Wostenholm drew first blood for the visitors, with Apps palming a catch to be involved in that dismissal, too.

Ryan Denston (45) and Ross Fitzhenry (39) then offered some resistance for Queen’s, but after Alastair de Kock claimed Denston’s wicket in the 20th over, the match turned into the Apps’ show.

He sliced through the remaining batsmen to end the hosts’ innings on 139. Apps’ eight-over super-spell included two maidens and came at a cost of only 19 runs.

Vijay George gave the home team some hope by knocking over two batsmen early in the St Andrew’s innings, but a half-century by Murray Wilson and an undefeated 42 from Myles Sansom saw the visitors over the line in the 28th over.

Saints will seek to carry their winning momentum into their next match against Selborne College next weekend.

Selborne are also coming off a winning performance after a Tré Gilbert century saw them to a narrow one-wicket victory over Graeme College.

That match is available to watch again on SuperSport Schools – Register now

The weekend, however, belonged to the bowlers in the Eastern Cape. Murray Tyson grabbed a five-for for Graeme, and Matt Loon returned figures of 5/23 for Kingswood College against Woodridge College.

Kingswood won that match comfortably by five wickets despite a fine innings by Jaydin Damons, who scored 91 out of his team’s 165 runs.

Pearson‘s Esa Gangat stole the spotlight once again, taking a combined total of 10/35 over two innings, as he laid waste to the Daniel Pienaar lineup.

Gangat led his team from the front, snaring six wickets in the first innings, before driving Pearson to an imposing 220/6 alongside Cayden Wilson. He then added four more wickets as Pearson overpowered Daniel Pienaar.

  • Hanro van Jaarsveld scores 152 for Framesby in Somerset West

    Framesby 1st XI (Photo provided)

Framesby‘s visit to the Western Cape produced some fireworks as the school from Gqeberha delivered a strong showing on Saturday, day two of their two-day battle against Somerset College.

After Callum Hughes (4/21) and Chad Ayford (3/22) caused the visitors some early trouble, which kept them to 159 all out in their first innings, the Framesby batsmen more than doubled their output in their second innings, posting 321/9.

The Somerset boys doggedly stayed in the fight, even after their first innings fell apart. They tallied only 106 all out as Miles Feltham (4/6) and Juan Grigor (4/34) did the damage.

Hanro van Jaarsveld then stole the show, scoring a massive 152 runs off of 165 deliveries in Framesby’s second innings. He was supported well by Dewan Wessels, Durandt Rootman and Taine Douw, who were all dismissed within touching distance of half-centuries.

Somerset’s second innings started strongly, with Chad Ayford (55), Owethu Moyi (42) and Eden Scott (48) laying a solid foundation for the locals.

Jonno Firth then smashed 10 boundaries in his 74, but the home side was still 132 runs shy of the victory target when play came to an end.

Both teams will be back in action on Sunday, when Somerset College, Framesby, Hoërskool Outeniqua and Wellington College, from the UK, contest a T20 tournament in Somerset West.

    Summarised Scorecards

Framesby first innings 159/10 (JJ de Lange 33, Taine Douw 32, Extras 29, Hanro van Jaarsveld 26; Callum Hughes 4/21, Chad Ayford 3/22, Troy Varie 2/32); Somerset College first innings 106/10 (Chad Ayford 35, Owethu Moyi 27; Miles Feltham 4/6, Juan Grigor 4/34); Framesby second innings 321/9 (Hanro van Jaarsveld 152, Dewan Wessels 49, Durandt Rootman 48, Taine Douw 44; Troy Varie 3/32, Callum Hughes 2/45); Somerset College second innings 242/6 (Jonno Firth 74, Chad Ayford 55, Eden Scott 48, Owethu Moyi 42; Logan Fleetwood 2/25). Match drawn.

Parel Vallei 208/10 (Sevi Barlow 52, Henry Jones 51, Extras 46; Morné Meyer 7/54, Zylin Rule 2/49); Strand 131/10 (Daniel Theron 50, Nicholis Martin 28; Christopher Hughes 4/18, Josua Smit 2/28). Parel Vallei won by 77 runs.

  • Hansen and Garvs see Wynberg to stunning victory over Rondebosch

Beni Hansen & Xavier Garvs, Wynberg Boys’ High (Photo provided)

Wynberg Boys’ High delivered a masterclass on Saturday to topple their rivals and cricketing powerhouse, Rondebosch Boys’ High.

Captain Beni Hansen led from the front to give the visitors a platform from which to launch their attack. Hansen, also the SA Schools’ captain in 2023, delivered a much-need boost to the Wynberg innings after they had lost their openers early on.

It was, however, Xavier Garvs who caused the most problems for the ‘Bosch bowlers, picking them apart to add 112 runs to the Wynberg total.

Hlumelo Mgweba had some success for the home team, taking three wickets, including that of the Wynberg captain, but Garvs took the sting out of the attack, and the home side’s bowlers were unable to impose themselves, as they usually do.

Rondebosch were frustrated further at the end of the Wynberg innings as Luke Kleinsmith hung around for 71 deliveries and added 29 more runs to carry Wynberg to 252/8 as they saw out 70 overs.

Nathan Ball launched a counteroffensive for the hosts, but he could only watch on helplessly as the rest of the Rondebosch batting lineup crumbled in the face of the Wynberg onslaught.

Ball carved out 52 runs from 88 deliveries before Paul James sent him packing, which brought an end to the Rondebosch innings after James and his teammates had sliced through the home team’s batting.

Ebrahim Fakir spearheaded the Wynberg efforts, dismissing three batsmen for a mere 16 runs, which helped Wynberg end Rondebosch’s stuttering chase still 130 runs shy of their target.

The emphatic victory will be a massive boost of confidence for Wynberg ahead of a clash with the touring Wellington College (UK) team, which precedes a Saturday showdown with Affies on the Jacques Kallis Oval.

Rondebosch also faces the UK tourists during the week. They, then, turn down the intensity for an inter-house six-a-side tournament before the 1st XI faces a stiff examination from Affies on Sunday.

Hoërskool Durbanville also bested their local rivals, with Jan Kriel’s brisk 82 runs off 66 deliveries, and further useful contributions from Pierre du Toit (48) and Divan Bosman (42), taking them to a win over Curro Durbanville.

There was still a lot of work to do when Xander van Aarde (27*) stepped to the crease as the Durbies’ eighth batsman, though.

He showed his class, patiently knocking off the required runs before putting an exclamation point on his team’s victory with a six to seal it.

Meanwhile, Bishops Diocesan College and SACS ended all square after 120 overs of ferocious battle.

At the start, Litha Kraai wreaked havoc among the Bishops’ batsmen, taking three early wickets to rattle the visitors, who found themselves in trouble on 16/3.

Thaafier Japhta (40) did well to stabilise the Bishops’ innings and provide a platform for his side in the face of a relentless bowling attack. Then Sam Stavely-Alexander (43) and Waco Bassick (79) combined to drive their team into the ascendancy.

Nicholas Oscroft finally removed Stavely-Alexander, but Peyton Leigh, the next man in, continued to pile more pressure on the hosts with an undefeated 41 runs.

When SACS batted, Bassick and Leigh made further contributions, this time sharing six wickets between them, as SACS made it to 180, but the game had slowed to a crawl by then, with 55 overs bowled.

Though Bishops will be disappointed to have not added another victory to their record, their unbeaten streak in their 175th anniversary year continues.

They have two midweek matches against UK opposition on their schedule, taking on Charterhouse and Wellington College, before they visit Stellenbosch to face a wounded Paul Roos Gimnasium on Saturday.

Kort daarna was Stefan Conradie weer betrokke toe hy vir Vivier kon uitvang.

    Beknopte telkaart:

Paarl Gimnasium: 203/9 (De Waal Vivier 87, Adrian Louw 68; Gunther Schmidt 2/23, Francois Prins 2/27, Stefan Conradie 2/71). Boland Landbou: 204/6 (Stefan Conradie 55, Kobus Conradie 36, Ekstras 30, Jan-Albert van Niekerk 24*, Rynhard van der Schyff 22, Lohann Louw 21; Zheemo Isaacs 1/21). Boland wen met vier paaltjies.

Hoërskool Brackenfell: 148 (Antonio Jasson 39, Jean Oosthuizen 27, Ekstras 20; Rossouw Matthee 3/20, Leolan Davids 2/23, Keahan Alexander 2/25). Charlie Hofmeyr: 149/7 (Luan Giliomee 81*; Jean Oosthuizen 3/23, JJ Mans 2/23).

    Beknopte telkaart:

Paul Roos Gimnasium: 120 (Beor van Reenen 25, Matthew Seymore 20; Marco Cato 3/23, Renaldo Windvogel 2/15, Christiaan Wege 2/19, Christian van Zuydam 2/36). Hoër Jongenskool Paarl: 125/4 (Johan Wege 43, JJ van der Sandt 38*, Christiaan Wege 22; Dian Winkel 2/27). Hoër Jongenskool Paarl wen met ses paaltjies.

  • HTS Drostdy claim Dawie de Lange Trophy for a second time

The bragging rights in Worcester belong to HTS Drostdy and the coveted De Lange Trophy will take the name of their beloved former vice-principal for the next year after Jacques Jordaan and co muscled their way to a home victory.

Jordaan, one of four HTS Drostdy players to have taken part in every iteration of the contest since its inception in 2022, led the charge with an innings of 69 runs off of 96 deliveries to set his side on course for a solid total.

Along with Gerhard le Roux, Ruvan Barnard and Darius Venter, he gets his hands on the Dawie de Lange Trophy for a second time to break open a one-one tie with Drostdy’s rivals, Worcester Gimnasium, who were victorious last year.

Brevin Maree and Therenzo Jacobs did well to put pressure on the Drostdy batsmen initially, but Jordaan settled in and found his rhythm to help drive his side to 225 runs. He was supported well by Barnard (23) and Bryan Cochrane (35) before Rijan Visser (3/46) took care of the middle order.

Cochrane then drew early blood for the hosts. Despite a well-played 44 runs from Caleb de Lange, the Gimmie batting lineup struggled to put any big partnerships together as the Donkeys’ bowlers kept chipping away.

Visser, batting at seven provided stubborn resistance, seeing out 63 deliveries and striking four fours in an unbeaten innings of 28, but Cochrane and the rest of the Drostdy bowlers snuffed out Worcester Gimnasium’s hopes of a successful run chase by bowling out the visiting team for 152 in the 44th over.

With the victory, the coveted De Lange Trophy stays true to its history of favouring the home team. Next year, the Gimmies will, once again, look to turn the tide when they get to play in their own backyard.

HTS Drostdy, on the other hand, will be itching for an opportunity to defend the title and to begin building a lead in the revitalised rivalry between the two schools.

    Summarised Scorecard

HTS Drostdy 225 (Jacques Jordaan 69, Extras 37, Bryan Cochrane 35, Ruvan Barnard 23; Brevin Maree 3/27, Rijan Visser 3/46); Worcester Gimnasium 152 (Caleb de Lange 44, Extras 27, Rijan Visser 28*; Bryan Cochrane 2/16, Reghardt du Plessis 2/26, Helgardt Nortjé 2/29). HTS Drostdy won by 73 runs.
