There were ebbs and flows to the battle, with the hosts dominating on day one before a solid batting shift by Grey High on Saturday had the hosts labouring in the field.

On Friday, Darion Rabie snared five Grey High batsmen as the visitors stumbled to 142 all out in their first innings.

After Kamo Mokoena made the initial breakthrough to remove the Grey High opening duo, Rabie made short work of the rest of their lineup to put the Bloemfontein boys in the ascendency.

They backed up their early dominance when Ruben Maree scored a massive 137 runs off of 147 balls to blast them 135 runs clear of Grey High’s first innings score.

Henru de Wet played a fine supporting role, contributing a further 58 runs, as he and Maree constructed a 169-run partnership to pile the pressure on the touring side.

Grey High, however, showed they are a quality outfit by regrouping to turn the tables on their rivals in their second innings.

Centuries by Kian Cambier (119) and Xander Elkington (101*) powered the visiting team to a massive 341/5 by the time play came to an end.

Rabie added another three wickets to his record, but the Elkington and Cambier partnership swelled to 185 runs before Henru de Wet removed Cambier.

Next weekend, Grey High welcomes an in-form Boland Landbou to Gqeberha for another two-day contest, while Grey College sets off on a tour of the Western Cape on Wednesday.

    Summarised Scorecard

Grey High first innings 142 (Teun Kloppenberg 33, Marco Giaconi 24; Darion Rabie 5/51, Kamo Mokoena 2/15); Grey College first innings 277/9 d (Ruben Maree 137, Henru de Wet 58, Daniel Hattingh 28, Christiaan Kind 28; Nathan Howell 3/28, Zander Nutt 3/62); Grey High second innings 341/5 (Kian Cambier 119, Xander Elkington 101*, Marco Giaconi 25, Dylan Garrod 24*, Luke Tait 23, Teun Kloppenberg 20; Darion Rabie 3/68). • Boland Landbou and Paarl Gim gain momentum ahead of their weekend showdown

    Boland Landbou 1st XI 2024

Both Boland Landbou and Paarl Gimnasium came out on top after strong performances in their midweek 40-over fixtures, ahead of their showdown on Saturday.

On Thursday, Boland bested the travelling Framesby team, from Gqeberha, with some penetrative bowling by Marius du Plessis and Tiaan Ryke wreaking havoc on the visitors.

Du Plessis snapped up 4/21 in eight overs and Ryke assisted by dismissing three more batsmen to curtail the visitors’ run chase 75 runs shy of their target.

With Kobus Conradie making 61 runs in a 112-ball stay, Boland had posted 184/7.

Taine Douw bowled extremely well for Framesby, snaring four Boland batsmen, but his side was unable to build any momentum at the crease in the face of the relentless bowling onslaught of the locals.

The team from the Eastern Cape continues its jam-packed tour with a two-day declaration match against Somerset College, starting on Friday, and they end their busy schedule on Sunday with three T20 games at the Somerset College Cricket Festival.

The local rivalry between Boland Landbou and Paarl Gimnasium promises to be one of the highlights of Saturday’s schedule.

Gim heads into the showdown off the back of a strong all-round performance on Wednesday, which brought them a 137-run victory over Curro Durbanville.

Charles King helped drive the Gimmies to an imposing total of 217/6, with a well-struck 65. The Gimnasium bowlers then ran through the Curro batting, bowling them out for 80.

Koch van Eyssen was the standout performer for the Paarl school, scoring an undefeated 27 runs before knocking over four of the visiting batsmen while conceding a miserly seven runs.

The last four Curro batsmen were ruthlessly brushed aside as Van Eyssen struck three times without conceding a run. King then trapped the last Curro batsman in front to bring the game to a close in the 20th over of their innings.

With both Gimmies and Landbou appearing to be in good form, an exciting 50-over battle is set to unfold on the farm, as Boland welcomes the Paarl players on Saturday.

    Summarised scorecards

Boland Landbou 184/7 (Kobus Conradie 61, Francois Prins 33, Lohann Louw 27; Taine Douw 4/29, Logan Fleetwood 2/31); Framesby 109/9 (Logan Fleetwood 20; Marius du Plessis 4/21, Tiaan Ryke 3/16). Boland Landbou won by 75 runs.

Paarl Gimnasium 217/6 (Charles King 65, Jandré Botha 35, Franco Boonzaier 34, Koch van Eyssen 27*; Caleb Jonkers 2/27, Caleb Inglis 2/31); Curro Durbanville 80 (Daniyaal Klinck 27, Dean Huesmann 22; Koch van Eyssen 4/7, Willem Matthee 3/16). Paarl Gimnasium won by 137 runs.

Dinsdag was Jim Fouché in aksie teen St Andrew’s se tweedespan, in die Superliga Pro-20.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Fichardtpark: 207/5 (MJ Herbst 95, Eben Botha 37, Zayne Williamson 34; Zadian du Preez 2/33). Grey College: o. 17: 112 (HJ Janse van Rensburg 21; Nathan Ackerman 4/32, Juan Moster 2/20, Michael Cruywagen 2/30). Fichardtpark wen met 95 lopies.

Jim Fouché: 146/4 (Adrian de Necker 58*, Arnaud Marais 52; Heindre Serfontein 1/10). Saint Andrew’s: II 104/8 (Jonathan Hickley 51*; Pieter Conradie 3/16, Henko Venter 3/22, Cobus Wilken 2/17). Jim Fouché wen met 42 lopies.

Diamantveld: 168/7 (Luhan de la Rey 79, Henrico van Staden 26; AJ Joubert 2/24, Pieter van Biljon 2/39). Sentraal: 106 (Pieter van Biljon 29, Ekstras 27; Vernon Rossouw 2/2, Danie van der Merwe 2/12, Luhan de la Rey 2/16). Diamantveld wen met 62 lopies.

  • HTS Drostdy and Worcester Gim set for De Lange Trophy tiebreak

HTS Drostdy and Worcester Gimnasium tackle one another for local bragging rights and the coveted De Lange Trophy on Saturday morning.

The De Lange name is revered and respected in Boland cricket circles. Dawie de Lange, in his time as vice-principal at HTS Drostdy, played a formative role in the development of many of the Boland’s top cricketing talents.

Those included his son, Con de Lange, who matriculated at Worcester Gimnasium. He was selected for the SA u19 team and went on to enjoy a successful career after school, captaining both the Boland and Cape Cobras teams.

After moving to Scotland, he played cricket for East Lancashire, Blackpool and Northamptonshire before being selected for the Scottish national team in 2015 as an orthodox left-arm spin and right-handed batting option.

De Lange was given the honour of the vice-captaincy of Scotland in 2017 at the Desert T20 Series in the UAE. In June of that year, he took five wickets for the Scots against Zimbabwe.

He represented every team he played for with distinction until his career was cruelly cut short by a cancer diagnosis early in 2018.

Sadly, Con de Lange passed away in April 2019, but his legacy and that of his family is commemorated when the two schools go head-to-head on the cricket field every year for the De Lange Trophy.

Speaking at HTS Drostdy’s “Evening of Legends” in 2022, Dawie de Lange expressed his support for the event, saying that he hopes it continues to help grow the competitive spirit between the two schools.

In honour of their connection to the Worcester legends, the trophy takes the name of Con de Lange when Worcester Gimnasium wins and Dawie de Lange when HTS Drostdy is triumphant.

Historically, the home-field advantage has proved decisive, with HTS Drostdy taking the spoils at home in 2022 in the inaugural competition and Worcester Gimnasium winning the return fixture last year.

Jacques Jordaan, Gerhard le Roux, Ruvan Barnard and Darius Venter have competed in every match for the De Lange Trophy since its inception in 2022 and will be seeking to reclaim the honour for the Donkeys this weekend.

Rijan Visser, Garnet le Roux, Aiden Abrahams and Ayden Pekeur, however, all return from the Gimmies team that won last year, and their goal will be to become the first team to successfully defend the coveted trophy.

    Teams

HTS Drostdy: Stephan Steyn, Jacques Jordaan, Gerhard le Roux, Ruvan Barnard, Bryan Cochrane, Albert Nel, Adriaan Krynauw, Sias du Toit, Helgardt Nortjé, Darius Venter, Reghardt du Plessis.

Worcester Gimnasium: Caleb de Lange, Garnet le Roux, Noah Goliath, Aiden Abrahams, Ayden Pekeur, Alijandrew Heneke, Rijan Visser, Zayden Marais, Fredwin Philander, Brevin Maree, Therenzo Jacobs.

  • India outmuscles SA in thrilling ICC u19 World Cup semi-final

India booked themselves a place in the ICC u19 Cricket World Cup final by eliminating the hosts, South Africa, in a nail-biting semi-final in Benoni on Tuesday, in which the advantage constantly shifted between the two teams.

After early successes by the South African bowlers, the Indian captain, Uday Saharan, put in a man of the match-winning performance to oust the home team and give his side an opportunity to defend the title they won in the West Indies in 2022.

It is, in fact, a fifth consecutive final for India, and it is the ninth time that they have made the title-decider in the 15 u19 Cricket World Cups that have been played since 1988.

In Tuesday’s showdown, India won the toss and opted to field first. The five-time champions had batted first in every other game they had played at the tournament and won every time, with their superb bowling attack doing a good job of defending the challenging totals posted by their batsmen in Bloemfontein during the group stages.

SA u19 opener Lhuan-dré Pretorius continued his outstanding form, making his highest score of the event and breaching the half-century mark for a third match in succession. He took it to the Indian bowlers and made 76 from 102 balls, which included six fours and three sixes, before Musheer Khan palmed a phenomenal catch to remove the South African dangerman.

Richard Seletswane had joined Pretorius at the crease with the total on 46/2. Together, they weathered some early pressure from the Indian spinners and constructed a vital 72-run partnership.

After Pretorius was dismissed, it was up to Seletswane to carry the South African innings. He showed great patience and maturity in his 100-ball knock, scoring 64 runs, with four fours and two sixes, which manoeuvred his team into a position from which they could boost the run rate in the final overs.

Further contributions from Oliver Whitehead (22) and his captain, Juan James (24), helped South Africa to 220/7 in the 48th over before Tristan Luus (23*) and Riley Norton (7*) added the finishing touches.

Luus, who came into the squad as a late replacement for Esosa Aihevba, showed real intent, smashing two sixes and a four to race to 23 off of 12 deliveries, which helped South Africa become the first team to score more than 200 runs against the Indians.

They finished on 244/7 from their 50 overs to set the defending champions a challenge, and the South African quicks wasted no time in getting stuck into the feared Indian batsmen when they came out to bat.

Kwena Maphaka, who had already claimed three five-fours in the tournament, continued to assert himself as a force for the South African team, striking with the first delivery of the innings to send Adarsh Singh back to the sheds.

After three more wickets in quick succession, courtesy of Luus, the pacy two-pronged South African attack had the visitors rattled at 32/4 after the first 12 overs.

Musheer Khan, who entered the contest as the tournament’s top run scorer, was caught by James at second slip, having added only four runs to his tally.

The Indian captain Uday Saharan and Sachin Dhas (96), however, put up stubborn resistance to absorb the South Africans’ body blows and wrestle control away from the tails-up hosts.

The duo patiently picked off singles, before growing in confidence and striking up a massive 171-run partnership in 30.5 overs.

Maphaka finally made the breakthrough for his side in the 43rd over, when he was reintroduced to the attack, denying the big-hitting Dhas a century, before taking his third wicket with the final delivery of his spell.

With only 17 balls left in the game and with a tenuous 18 runs to protect, Dewan Marais picked up a seventh wicket for SA with a brilliant bit of fielding, with his direct hit on the stumps at the non-striker’s end getting rid of Murugan Abhishek without scoring.

Raj Limbani added to the tension by smacking the first delivery he faced over the boundary for six to get his side to within six runs of victory, with two overs remaining.

More excellent fielding, with the combination of Oliver Whitehead and Nqobani Mokoena producing a run out, prevented the Indian captain from seeing his team across the line. However, when Saharan departed, Naman Tiwari needed to score only one run to secure a thrilling two-wicket victory for India.

Though it was heartbreaking for the South Africans – and they will rue the 27 extras they conceded; India allowed only 11 – the young Proteas put up a valiant fight on home soil and showed signs that the future of South African cricket is bright.

The likes of Maphaka, Stolk, Pretorius, Marais and Luus, to name but a few, demonstrated their immense potential throughout the event when challenged by the best of the rest of the world.

On Thursday, Australia faces Pakistan to determine who will challenge India for the title of u19 World Cup winners on Sunday, 11 February.

    Summarised Scorecard

South Africa u19 244/7 (Lhuan-dré Pretorius 76, Richard Seletswane 64, Juan James 24, Tristan Luus 23*, Oliver Whitehead 22; Raj Limbani 3/60, Musheer Khan 2/43); India u19 248/8 (Sachin Dhas 96, Uday Saharan 81, Extras 27; Kwena Maphaka 3/32). India won by two wickets.

  • Pearson take the Cape by storm, but Bishops proves a step too far

Pearson 1st XI 2024 (Photo provided)

Pearson spent the weekend in the Western Cape, taking on Paul Roos Gimnasium, Somerset College and Bishops Diocesan College.

After two stunning successes against Paul Roos and Somerset, the boys from Gqeberha finally met their match when they tackled Bishops on Sunday.

They started their tour in Stellenbosch, where Cayden Wilson struck 64 against Paul Roos to help the visitors post 149 all out in a limited overs fixture.

Cornel Swart responded with a masterful 74 not out, but Jude Septoo‘s 3/16, which tore through the tail-end of the Paul Roos batting order, was just enough to see the visitors to a narrow four-run victory.

On Saturday, Pearson outmuscled Somerset College, after both teams performed well at the crease. Captain Esa Gangat led their charge with an unbeaten innings of 75 runs.

Chad Ayford (60) and Owethu Moyi (40) helped Somerset lay down a challenge as they totalled 242/8 after their 50 overs, but Gangat bludgeoned 11 boundaries to power his team to the win in the 44th over, with six wickets in hand.

Pearson’s biggest challenge of the weekend was always going to be Bishops, though. The southern suburbs’ powerhouse has been impeccable form in the year of the school’s 175th anniversary.

Coming off a stunning win against Paarl Boys’ High on Saturday, after a gruelling battle that lasted 123 overs, the Bishops’ bowlers were straight back into the action on Sunday and they responded well to dismiss the visitors for a slender 121.

Michael Kotze spearheaded the bowling attack, removing three batsmen for only 17 runs in 10 overs. Six of those overs were maidens, which piled a huge amount of pressure onto the visitors.

When Bishops replied, they quickly realised they were in for a stiff challenge as Sulaymaan Gangat and his older brother, Esa, reduced the hosts to 13/2 in the early going.

Despite further successes for the brothers and Cayde Wilson, Pearson’s low total meant Bishops could play patiently, and that’s exactly what they did, to add another victory to their impressive record.

Kashief Joseph set Bishops up for the win by smashing five sixes in an innings of 48. When he was out, a victim of Esa Gangat, the home side needed only 40 runs for victory.

In the 23rd over, Waco Bassick (1*) and Sam Stavely-Alexander (10*) scored the winning run to keep Bishops’ long winning streak alive.

Despite the loss, Pearson will be delighted by their players’ performances over the weekend, and they’ll be keen to return to the win column when they face Dan Pienaar on 10 February.

    Summarised Scorecards

    4 February

Pearson 121/10 (Luke Hector 35*; Michael Kotze 3/17, Peyton Leigh 2/37); Bishops Diocesan College 122/6 (Kashief Joseph 48, Litha Mbiko 21; Sulaymaan Gangat 2/29, Cayden Wilson 2/37; Esa Gangat 2/56). Bishops Diocesan College won by four wickets.

    3 February

Somerset College 242/8 (Chad Ayford 60, Owethu Moyi 40, Eden Scott 39, Extras 24, Tyrone Rieth 25; Divan Els 2/27, Sulaymaan Gangat 2/59); Pearson 244/4 (Esa Gangat 75*, Leander van Rooyen 50, Sulaymaan Gangat 37, Divan Els 28, Jude Septoo 24; Chad Ayford 3/37). Pearson won by six wickets (50 Overs).

    2 February

Pearson 149/10 (Cayden Wilson 64, Extras 29, Matt Seymore 2/15, Keauno Williams 2/24, Neil Barnard 2/28, Dian Winkel 2/33); Paul Roos Gimnasium 145/10 (Cornel Swart 74*, Extras 23; Jude Septoo 3/16, Reegan Meyer 2/21, Esa Gangat 2/32); Pearson won by four runs (50 Overs).

  • Paul James stars in Gqeberha as Wynberg do the double over Grey

Wynberg Boys’ High wrapped up their weekend in Gqeberha in style with two wins on the trot against Grey High School.

Paul James stood out for the visiting squad, showcasing his all-round abilities.

On Saturday, the hosts experienced early success through Likhona Gcora‘s bowling, but James’ 107-run stay wrestled away control of the game for Wynberg.

James backed up that performance on Sunday, in a T20, weighing in with another solid knock of 71 runs from 43 deliveries after earlier leading the Wynberg bowlers with a return of 3/4 from two overs as Grey was bowled out for 131.

Michail Tarentaal contributed a well-played 47 in Saturday’s match before Grey’s Xander Elkington sent him packing, tantalisingly close to a half-century.

After the Cape Town school had posted 261 all out, Divan Linde (3/8) and Luke Kleinsmith (2/16) inflicted damage on the hosts’ attempts at a fightback, which was stopped short on 162, despite a battling 71 from Kian Cambier.

Elkington stood out for Grey again on Sunday, removing both Wynberg openers, but it was too little, too late as Beni Hansen (19*) and Divan Linde (17*) saw the touring side to a comfortable win.

Wynberg will hope to take the momentum they built up on their tour of Gqeberha into their showdown with high-flying Rondebosch Boys’ High next Saturday.

Grey High travels to Bloemfontein to renew their long-standing rivalry with their namesakes, Grey College.

    Summarised Scorecards

    4 February

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Sentraal 162 (Pieter van Biljon 58*, Ekstras 40, JP Jonker 20; Meyer Pretorius 4/20, Nathan Swanepoel 3/41). Hoërskool Sasolburg 145 (Ekstras 29, Wiandré Singleton 26, Meyer Pretorius 24, Liam Singleton 21; Pieter van Biljon 5/32). Sentraal wen met 17 lopies.

  • Bishops weather Weges’ two-pronged attack in Paarl

Bishops Diocesan College First XI, 2024 (Photo provided)

Bishops Diocesan College maintained their unblemished record for the year by weathering a spirited Paarl Boys’ High challenge away from home on Saturday.

The hosts’ Wege brothers nearly brought an end to Bishops’ winning streak, but the peninsular powerhouse eked out another impressive victory after a gruelling unlimited overs’ battle.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, however, Bishops found themselves in hot water, with Ronaldo Windvogel capturing two wickets before any runs were on the board.

Thaafier Japhta stopped the rot, making a well-struck 65, to give the hosts’ batting lineup a much-needed injection of runs, but he was merely a spectator as Christiaan Wege picked off his teammates at the other end.

Wege removed five of the visiting batsmen, including Japhta, before Waco Bassick and Peyton Leigh salvaged the visitors’ innings with a superb partnership of 94 runs.

Leigh anchored their stay, stubbornly facing 71 deliveries for his 21 runs, while Bassick continued his phenomenal run of form, bludgeoning 12 boundaries in a crucial knock of 88 runs.

Bishops reached 229 before Aiden Batt finally took care of Bassick in the 70th over to bring the visitors’ innings to an end.

Wege’s bowling had left the door open for the Boishaai batsmen, but Tiaan Louw rocked them early on, dismissing Wege before Bassick also struck to leave Boishaai flustered on 7/2.

Johan Wege then made his presence felt as he and Dian van der Westhuizen shared a 63-run partnership before Leigh ended it by sending Van der Westhuizen’s wickets tumbling.

Wege resolutely launched a valiant solo effort to take his side to the win. He tallied 97 from 157 deliveries before Leigh trapped him in front within touching distance of a century. Bishops triumphed by 32 runs.

It was an exhilarating battle and another impressive performance from Bishops, who are enjoying a dominant season as the school celebrates its 175th anniversary. They play Pearson next in a T20 on Sunday.  The visitors from the Eastern Cape will be seeking to claim their biggest scalp yet.

Meanwhile, Hoërskool Durbanville beat DF Malan by the narrowest of margins in their limited overs match.

After Xander van Aarde smashed 62 runs at the tail end to help Durbies to 222, Calla du Toit’s three wickets for eight runs in five overs played a massive role in restricting DF Malan to 221/8.

Kingswood and Framesby trade wins, St Andrew’s draw vs Graeme College

Kingswood College and Framesby spent the weekend in battle on the City Lords field in Makhanda. On Friday, Framesby cruised to a five-wicket T20 victory, but Kingswood turned the tables to take the spoils in Saturday’s 50-overs match.

The visitors restricted Kingswood to 115/7 on Friday, with Juan Grigor snaring two batsmen with consecutive deliveries to damage Kingswood’s run tempo in the 16th over.

Opener Dewan Wessels‘ knock of 41 runs then steered Framesby into a comfortable position from which Taine Douw (26*) and Ethan Terblanche (7*) could secure the win.

Kingswood responded well on the following day.

Ross Thompson struck 11 boundaries and contributed 71 runs as they posted 262/7 in their 50 overs. He was supported well by Christopher Zimmerman, who missed out on a fifty by only five runs, while Tapiwa Zhanda (31) and Alistair Knott (34) added valuable runs at both ends of the innings.

In reply, Ethan Terblanche made 45 runs for Framesby before Jack Collet sent his wickets flying.

Facing a big run chase, the boys from Gqeberha came up well short, bowled out for 190, as Collet and Daniel Jakins scalped three apiece.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, St Andrew’s College took on local rivals, Graeme College, in Makhanda.

College batted first and Laurie Apps’ unbeaten 69 runs was the key innings in their 205 all out, which took 63 overs to compile.

Marcus Williams and Murray Tyson picked up three wickets each for Graeme, and made life difficult for the hosts’ tailenders, but Apps stood firm, weathering 108 deliveries to help his side beyond 200.

Williams was in on the action again when Graeme College took to the crease, Patiently, he faced 92 deliveries and scored 34 runs for the visitors, who, although not scoring at an impressive rate, batted tenaciously.

The game had slowed to a crawl by the end of the day, with St Andrew’s recording seven consecutive maiden overs, before play was brought to a close.
