  • James Kirsten spearheads Rondebosch win in Stellenbosch

    Rondebosch First XI (Photo provided)

Rondebosch Boys’ High looked to James Kirsten and their bowling attack to secure a victory over Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch on Saturday. The home side bowled and fielded well, but their batsmen were unable to capitalise on the good work done by their bowlers.

Dian Winkel was in fine form for Paul Roos. He frustrated the visitors and claimed 6/30 after Niel Barnard had removed the openers, which helped the hosts to restrict Rondebosch to 188 all out.

Declan Gillespie (33) and Josh Neill (23) combined for a vital fourth-wicket partnership to give the ‘Bosch innings some direction before Winkel got rid of both of them.

Hlumelo Mgweba contributed a well-struck 29 runs at the tail-end of the innings, smashing five boundaries, including a six, to boost his side’s total.

In reply, the Paul Roos batsmen found run scoring difficult in the face of a relentless Rondebosch onslaught.

They were swiftly reduced to 29/3 as the visitors made it clear that they were in no mood to allow their total to be passed. Kornel Swart did well to bring some stability to the Paul Roos middle order but, despite his resistance, Rondebosch kept taking wickets regularly while also smothering the hosts’ run rate.

Swart showed character to score 50 runs on a day that clearly favoured the bowlers, but it was Kirsten, the ‘Bosch bowling spearhead, who removed PRG’s top scorer, as the visitors asserted their dominance to win by a comfortable 74 runs.

Next weekend they take on their southern suburbs’ rivals, Wynberg Boys’ High, who are on a tour to Gqeberha this weekend.

On Thursday, Boland Landbou beat Charlie Hofmeyr in a tightly contested T20 battle.

Charlies owed plenty to Luan Giliomee after he carried their innings by scoring an unbeaten 54 out of their total of 88/7. His heroics proved in vain, however, as Boland reached the victory target in the 19th over to come away with a three-wicket win.

Stefan Conradie opened their innings with a solid 31, but the rest of the Landbou lineup crumbled in the face of persistent and consistent bowling by the visitors until Francois Prins stood his ground and drove Boland to victory with an unbeaten 30 runs.

  • Kwena Maphaka makes history

Kwena Maphaka has been on a tear, and another sensational performance from the left-arm speedster powered South Africa into the semi-finals of the ICC u19 Cricket World Cup on Friday.

Playing in Potchefstroom, Maphaka captured 6/21 in 8.2 overs, cutting through the Sri Lankan lineup in no time at all to hamstring their run chase from the start, which led to the islanders being dismissed in the 24th over of their innings.

It was a Youth ODI record fourth five-for for the St Stithians’ star, breaking a tie he shared with three others. It was also a record third five-wicket haul in the 2024 u19 World Cup, and his fourth five-forof the year, after he knocked over 5/25 against Afghanistan in a warm-up match in January.

Victory was of utmost importance for the hosts as they went in pursuit of a final four spot, and they turned on the style to thump the Sri Lankans by 119 runs.

Maphaka, who made his World Cup debut in the West Indies in 2022, had stolen the spotlight with his two five-wicket hauls earlier in the tournament. On Friday, he induced three catches, which were pocketed by wicketkeeper Lhuan-dré Pretorius in his first three overs to reduce the opposition to 13/3 in the fifth over.

Two more catches secured Maphaka’s five-for in his sixth over at a cost of only 18 runs.

Later, he returned to the attack and promptly ended the innings with a sixth wicket, which brought the contest to a fitting close as the home team recorded an emphatic victory. There was little doubt who the Player of the Match was.

Sri Lanka had won the toss and elected to field first, but Pretorius and Steve Stolk got South Africa off to a comfortable start.

Pretorius was in top form, racing to 71 before losing his wicket in unfortunate circumstances. He was run out backing up when the ball ricocheted onto his stumps at the non-striker’s end after hitting the hand of bowler, Supun Waduge.

The Sri Lankan spinners wreaked havoc on the hosts’ middle order, snaring four wickets for 30 runs at one point, led by Waduge (2/28), while Vishwa Lahiru and Malsha Tharupathi also picked up two wickets each.

However, Riley Norton and Romashan Pillay did well to steady the ship for the young Proteas.

POTCHEFSTROOM, SOUTH AFRICA – FEBRUARY 02: Riley Norton of the Proteas during the ICC U19 Men’s World Cup 2024, Super Six match between South Africa and Sri Lanka at JB Marks Oval on February 02, 2024, in Potchefstroom, South Africa. (Photo by Lee Warren/Gallo Images)

Pillay delivered his best knock of the tournament so far, weathering 53 deliveries and contributing 27 runs at a crucial stage of the game.

Norton’s undefeated 41 helped South Africa set Sri Lanka a target of 233 and that total soon looked sound after Maphaka muscled control of the game into the hosts’ favour with his spectacular bowling.

Following Maphaka’s onslaught, Norton ensured South Africa kept up the pressure, snapping up 4/28 as Sri Lanka buckled.

The exciting young talent, who is in his matric year at Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch, is one of only 15 players to represent South African Schools in both rugby and cricket, and only the third forward to achieve that rare feat.

Despite the dominant performance by South Africa, there were some fielding errors that they will want to address before Tuesday’s semi-final, where they are likely to come up against India, who are favoured to finish top of their group.

It was, regardless, a fantastic performance by the South African side and a special moment for Maphaka as he etched his name into the history books.

In a playoff between Namibia and Scotland, a thrilling game was decided by only three runs, with the Scots sneaking a nail-biting win.

Bahadar Esakhiel (76*) and Jamie Dunk (76) shone for Scotland as they posted 251/6.

Zacheo van Vuuren (86) and Johannes Visagie (69) drove Namibia to their highest total of the tournament in reply, but it wasn’t quite enough as they fell agonisingly short of their target.

Namibia will take on the USA to determine 16th place after the Americans lost their playoff match against Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Saterdag pak Sentraal vir Hoërskool Sasolburg in Bloemfontein, terwyl Fichardtpark by Hoërskool Trio in Kroonstad ‘n draai maak.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Fichardtpark: 49 (Extras 14; Liam Pretorius 3/12, Reshé Wales 3/14, AJ Joubert 2/10, Johan van den Heever 2/10). Sentraal: 53/3 (Johan van den Heever 28*; Michael Cruywagen 2/1). Sentraal wen met sewe paaltjies.

Jim Fouché: 202/3 (Adrian de Necker 101*, Cobus Wilken 51*; Junior 1/14). RPC: 92/9 (Khanye 31; Lian Theron 3/6, Cobus Wilken 2/12, Marco de Lange 2/27). Jim Fouché wen met 110 lopies.

  • Another Maphaka masterclass as SA u19 storms past Zimbabwe

POTCHEFSTROOM, SOUTH AFRICA – JANUARY 23: Kwena Maphaka of the Proteas during the ICC U19 Men’s World Cup 2024 between South Africa and England at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on January 23, 2024 in Potchefstroom, South Africa. (Photo by Lee Warren/Gallo Images)

Kwena Maphaka equalled the record for the most five-wicket hauls in a single ICC u19 Cricket World Cup after bagging his second five-for of the tournament against Zimbabwe.

After topping Group B, ahead of England and the West Indies, South Africa opened their Super Sixes account with a dominant performance to win by nine wickets.

Opening the attack, Maphaka struck early, capturing three wickets before Ronak Patel (32) and Ryan Kamwemba (24) were finally able to offer some resistance for the Zimbabweans.

A bowling change, however, saw Tristan Luus strike and remove both Patel and his captain, Matthew Schonken, while Riley Norton ratcheted up the pressure from the other end, bowling successive maidens before sending Kamwemba back to the sheds.

Mashford Shungu survived 47 deliveries to frustrate SA at the tail-end, but Maphaka carried his exceptional form into the second half of his spell to send the wickets of two more Zimbabwean batsmen flying.

Debutant, Raeeq Daniels, who came in as a replacement for the injured Martin Khumalo, took the final catch to end Shungu’s innings, and with that the Zimbabwean batting effort was over, too.

With South Africa’s neighbours having been despatched for only 102, Lhuan-dré Pretorius and Steve Stolk wasted no time in launching the South African reply.

In just 10 overs, the duo raced to 86 before Stolk lost his wicket.

Pretorius produced his best knock of the tournament thus far, scoring 53 not out from 39 balls, with nine fours and a six, to drive South Africa to victory in the 14th over, with David Teeger (10*) in support.

In an extremely competitive pool, where the net run rate might very well come into play again, it was an encouraging start for the home side, but there remains plenty of hard work ahead for the young Proteas.

Coach Malibongwe Maketa‘s charges won’t have time to celebrate their lopsided win. They’re back in action again on Friday against Sri Lanka.

On Tuesday, India sent a loud and clear message to their rivals by thumping New Zealand in the opening match of the Super Sixes.

Musheer Khan scored a massive 131 runs to help his side to a fourth win on the trot. The five-time champions, who are defending the title they won in the West Indies in 2022, are one of the favourites heading into the business end of the competition.

The West Indies, meanwhile, left it to the third delivery of the last over of their match to chase down Sri Lanka‘s 231, while Ahmad Hassan drove Pakistan to a win over Ireland with an undefeated 57.

  • Boland Landbou, Boishaai and HTS Drostdy take midweek T20 victories

Boland Landbou, Boishaai and HTS Drostdy take midweek T20 victories

Marius du Plessis led the charge for Boland Landbou on all fronts as they beat Fairmont in a T20 battle on Tuesday.

With 62 runs off his bat and a bowling haul of four wickets for only 10 runs, Du Plessis spearheaded Boland to an easy 58-run victory.

Fairmont enjoyed early success through Daniel Breeders and Daniel Anderson, who had the visitors under pressure at 29/3.

Du Plessis’ introduction to the crease, however, boosted the Landbou innings as he bludgeoned 11 boundaries, including four sixes, to reach his total in only 39 deliveries.

In reply, Justin Passman struck a stubborn 46 off of 26 deliveries against the farmers.

The Boland Landbou bowlers ripped through the rest of the Fairmont lineup, though, and restricted them to just 85/9 after Stefan Conradie, at last, sent Passman packing.

Paarl Boys’ High bounced back after their weekend’s defeat against Rondebosch to beat Parel Vallei in Somerset West.

Gideon du Toit (66) and JJ van der Sandt (31) played well to build a partnership of 62 runs for Boishaai after the hosts had won the toss and elected to field.

When Sibulele Makaleni made the breakthrough for Parel Vallei, dismissing Van der Sandt with the help of Sevi Barlow‘s safe pair of hands, Christiaan Wege stepped up and contributed a vital, unbeaten 36 runs.

Wege, then, transferred that energy into Boishaai’s defence, claiming three wickets and a catch as the hosts were restricted to 129 all out.

Aiden Batt got the visitors off to a flying start by striking with the first delivery of the Parel Vallei innings. Despite some fight from Marco Karsten (34) and Henry Jones (25) later on in the innings, PV fell short by 32 runs after their 20 overs.

Both Karsten and Jones were dismissed by the combination of Johan Wege pocketing catches off deliveries by his brother, Christiaan.

This weekend, Boishaai takes on Bishops Diocesan College, who have been dominant in the year that they celebrate their 175th anniversary.

In Durbanville, HTS Drostdy‘s Stephan van der Merwe cracked 39 runs off 17 deliveries to see his side to a comfortable win away from home against Curro.

A freak accident meant Reece Bald, unfortunately, had to retire after the second delivery of the match. His exit led the home team to stumble and post only 77/6, which Van der Merwe and co chased down in 6.1 overs.

    Summarised Scorecards

Boland Landbou 143/9 (Marius du Plessis 62, Kobus Conradie 26, Jan-Albert van Niekerk 23; Daniel Anderson 3/22, Daniel Beelders 3/28); Fairmont 85/9 (Justin Passman 46; Marius du Plessis 4/10, Tiaan Ryke 2/10). Boland Landbou won by 58 runs.

Paarl Boys’ High 161/6 (Gideon du Toit 66, Christiaan Wege 36*, JJ van der Sandt 31; Henry Jones 2/21, Sibulele Makaleni 2/46); Parel Vallei 129 (Marco Karsten 34, Christopher Hughes 28, Henry Jones 25; Christiaan Wege 3/19, Aiden Batt 2/12). Paarl Boys’ High won by 32 runs.

Curro Durbanville 77/6 (Caleb Jonkers 23; Bryan Cochrane 2/15); HTS Drostdy 80/3 (Stephan van der Merwe 39*; Daniel Myburgh 2/20). HTS Drostdy won by seven wickets.

  • Back-to-back victories for dominant Bishops 1st XI

Waco Bassick, Bishops Diocesan College (Photo provided)

Bishops Diocesan College kept their impressive unbeaten streak for the year alive with exciting wins over Grey High and Wynberg Boys’ High on Friday and Saturday respectively.

On Friday, Bishops handled the touring Grey High in dominant fashion with Waco Bassick scalping five Grey batsmen to help his side secure a big victory by 123 runs.

On Saturday, they took on their peninsular rivals, Wynberg Boys’ High, and after a heated battle, emerged triumphant once again.

The southern suburbs’ derby turned into a nail-biting affair with Mikhail Tarentaal delivering a spectacular performance on the Jacques Kallis Oval to mow down five of the visitors’ batsmen.

Despite the persistent hammering by the home team’s bowlers, Thaafier Japhta and Calum Daniels did well to dig in and produce a stubborn partnership of 68 runs for the third wicket.

Japhta played confidently and sped to 57 runs off of 66 deliveries, 10 of which he put away for boundaries.

Set 201 to win, Wynberg made a good run at it, with star batsman Paul James missing out on a half-century by only six runs.

Bishops’ bowlers’ Michael Kotze, Peyton Leigh and Waco Bassick captured three wickets apiece to dash the home team’s hopes and keep their winning record alive as the last Wynberg batsman fell with the total on 190.

In Friday’s win over Grey High, Adnaan Lagadien (66) and Japhta (41) led the charge for Bishops as they tallied 258 all out.

Grey’s dynamic Xander Elkington took four wickets, but the local batsmen scored at nearly a run a ball to build a useful buffer for their bowlers.

Bassick emphatically undid the visitors’ run chase, snapping up 5/26, to leave the visitors well short of their target at 135 all out.

Bishops will seek to continue a memorable start to their season when they take on Paarl Boys’ High next weekend.

After their match against the southern suburbs’ powerhouse, Grey made their way to Stellenbosch to face Paul Roos on Saturday and Sunday.

Paul Roos produced a commanding performance for a first innings victory in their declaration match on Saturday before Grey bounced back on Sunday in their T20 battle.

Marco Giaconi‘s unbeaten ton steered the visitors to a narrow 15-run victory, which brought their time in the Western Cape to a positive close.

  • Roelofse snares four as Durbies beat Milnerton

Hoërskool Durbanville First XI 2024 (Photo provided)

Milnerton stumbled against Hoërskool Durbanville on Saturday as the Capetonians made the most of a beautiful day for 50-over cricket.

Tobias Roelofse starred for the Durbies, dismissing four Milnerton batsmen and bowling two maidens in his ten overs.

However, Daniel Bloemetjie (19), Tristen Logie (45), and Amr Williams (29) did well to build a platform for Milnerton as they absorbed the initial Durbanville onslaught.

Divan Bosman had made the breakthrough, claiming the first two wickets for his side by dismissing Bloemetjie and Williams.

Williams, though, made good use of his short time at the crease, smashing seven boundaries to race to 29 runs off of only 25 deliveries.

After Logie was run out, five runs short of a half-century, Roelofse made light work of the rest of the Milnerton lineup to restrict them to 165 all out.

The Durbie batsmen also struggled to find a rhythm, however, when they took to the crease in reply.

Williams spearheaded Milnerton’s efforts again and combined with Josh Reynolds to take eight wickets.

Henry Venter managed a stay of 58 deliveries and 29 runs for Hoërskool Durbanville as they slowly chipped away at the difference until, finally, it was left to the tailenders De Wet Viljoen (23*) and Hugo Bredell (16*) to score the winning runs in the 41st over.

Despite Joshua Martin taking four wickets for Fairmont in their game against DF Malan, Fairmont’s batsmen failed to find a winning formula and were dismissed 22 runs shy of the visitors’ 158.

Johan Janse van Rensburg played a mature innings, scoring 67 from 135 deliveries, but DF Malan’s lower order crumbled.

In reply, Fairmont’s Byron Garton weighed in with a confident 35 not out, but he could only watch on helplessly as the rest of his teammates fell victim to Eddie Fick (3/17) and co.

Rondebosch were without the services of their stalwart Raeeq Daniels, who has recently been called up to replace the injured Martin Khumalo in the South African u19 squad at the ICC u19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Even without his services, though, David Simon and James Kirsten laid down the challenge early on, dismissing the first three batsmen while conceding few runs, which slowed Boishaai’s attempts to build an innings to a crawl.

Van der Westhuizen’s innings stood in stark contrast with the rest of his team, besides JJ van der Sandt, who stuck it out for 80 deliveries in a supporting role.

Nathan Ball led the charge for the ‘Bosch bowlers, picking up three wickets, as the home team patiently maintained pressure on the visitors until the final Paarl Boys’ wicket fell in the 57th over.

Replying, Dan Cooke (23) and Noah Heath (34) provided the hosts with a steady start, but it was Declan Gillespie who played the pivotal innings, contributing an unbeaten 57 as Rondebosch claimed another victory.

SACS’ captain Reza Salie struck a powerful 72 run not out to drive his side over the line against Paarl Gimnasium.

Gim decided to bat first on their home pitch and were led by a solid knock from Jandré Botha (42), but Litha Kraai made light work of the top order. Ulrich Roth then stole the spotlight, taking four more wickets for the Cape Town school.

Chasing 135, Salie delivered a captain’s knock to steer SACS to victory, with Kieran Bowers‘ 44 also playing a big part in their comfortable seven-wicket win.

In the northern suburbs, Stellenberg was involved in a second low-scoring thriller in succession after they had managed to chase down Boland Landbou’s 72 with only a wicket to spare on Thursday.

Batting first against Tygerberg, the Stellenberg batsmen were skittled for a measly 58. Aarin Barends (4/17) and Mondre Julies (3/15) spearheaded the Tigers’ attack on their home field and left their batsmen a seemingly easy run chase.

Tygerberg, however, lost one of their openers to a run out, and after that Jan Jak Alberts and Lohann Pretorius produced a bowling masterclass to capture nine wickets and leave the home team nine runs shy of victory.

    Summarised Scorecards

Paarl Boys High 135 (Diaan van der Westhuizen 71, JJ van der Sandt 30; Nathan Ball 3/31, David Simon 2/13); Rondebosch Boys’ High 140/4 (Declan Gillespie 57*, Noah Heath 34, Dan Cooke 23; Christian Wege 2/23). Rondebosch Boys’ High won by six wickets.

  • Boland Landbou bounce back, Pretorius and Hughes shine for Parel Vallei

Boland Landbou returned to winning ways with a dominant performance against HTS Drostdy after a nail-biting midweek loss to Stellenberg.

Marius du Plessis put the squeeze on the Drostdy batting lineup, knocking over 4/14 to help the farmers defend their modest total of 179.

The hosts elected to bat first, but matters did not go according to plan as their top-order departed early on. But Francois Prins helped settle the Boland innings with a composed and mature knock of 64 off of 124 deliveries.

Kobus Conradie, who features more regularly in the bowling stats, assisted with an additional 46 runs, confidently striking six boundaries, before a delivery by Helgardt Nortje knocked back his stumps, four runs shy of a half-century.

The HTS Drostdy bowlers were in good form. Sias du Toit enjoyed the best figures of 2/7, but Nortje, Reghardt du Plessis and Bryan Cochrane also dismissed two Boland batsmen each.

Unfortunately for the visitors, though, they had no answers to Marius du Plessis, who tore through their lineup before Tiaan Ryke rounded off an excellent defensive display with the last two wickets.

Meanwhile, in Somerset West, Parel Vallei outplayed Hermanus for a decisive victory, putting on display teasing glimpses of what their opponents can expect this year.

After their opening duo fell without scoring any runs, Christopher Hughes and Joshua Pretorius unleashed on the visiting bowlers.

Hughes was unfortunate to lose his wicket on 47, after patiently absorbing 85 deliveries, but there was nothing patient about Pretorius’ innings as he went for everything, blasting 20 boundaries in his devastating 144.

With Josua Smith delivering further punishment later in the innings, Hermanus were left with a mountain to climb, requiring 309 for to win.

Their innings went awry earlier on, with Sibulele Makaleni starting the Hermanus slide. After that, Hughes and Henry Jones wreaked havoc, dismissing the rest of the batsmen within 25 overs to see Parel Vallei to a 224-run win.

Their neighbours, Somerset College, were in action against Strand.

After Tyrone Rieth‘s 62 helped his side to 225, Somerset’s bowlers restricted the visitors to 172/8. Despite offering stubborn resistance, the visitors couldn’t turn their time at the crease into enough runs.

Alexia Kontopirakis had the most success for Somerset College, sending four batsmen from Strand back to the sheds.
