Conradie Combo: Brothers star as Boland Landbou ends season on a high

    Ben la Grange, Boland Landbou

Boland Landbou brought their season to a winning end on Friday with a victory by seven wickets over Curro Durbanville in a spirited 35-overs-a-side battle on the Stiaan van Zyl Oval.

After Curro Durbanville won the toss and decided to bat, Marius du Plessis spearheaded the attack for Boland Landbou, taking the first three wickets of the game while conceding only 35 runs.

Reece Bald scored a solid 40 runs for the visitors before Lohann Louw ended his threat by palming a catch off a delivery by Kobus Conradie.

That was Conradie’s second wicket of the day, and he was also involved in a run out at the end of the innings for another highlight to remember his seventh cap by.

His older brother, the Boland Landbou 1st XI captain, Stefan Conradie, playing in his 70th match for the team, was responsible for the other wicket.

Ben la Grange also celebrated the 70-cap milestone, but it was his last match for the school. He was the only grade 12 player in the Boland Landbou line-up.

Chasing 169 to win, Stefan Conradie then led the charge for his team at the crease, putting on an opening stand of 108 with Jan-Albert van Niekerk to get Boland onto the front foot early on.

With a captain’s knock of 63 from 73 deliveries, including 10 boundaries, Conradie showed why he was named in the Boland u19 team this year.

Van Niekerk, meanwhile, bludgeoned three sixes as he raced to 47.

The Durbanville bowlers were exceptionally well-disciplined as they attempted to contain the hosts. In 31 overs, they conceded only four extras.

Du Plessis and Francois Prins, however, played confidently in the middle, knowing they had the luxury of wickets in hand, and with four overs to spare they overhauled Curro’s total.

Du Plessis contributed 27 off 20 deliveries without losing his wicket and smashed four boundaries to drive his team over the line, while Prins finished with an unbeaten 19.

Prins has been selected for the Boland u16 team this year and already looks like an exciting young prospect with a bright future.

For Curro Durbanville, Matthew Scobble was a standout performer. First, he produced a resilient innings of 26 not out, batting at the tail-end for the visitors, before he took the two crucial wickets of the Boland openers to get his team back in the game after the hosts’ initial onslaught.

In the end, despite a valiant fight from Curro, Boland Landbou ended their year on a high note, with a performance that bodes well for the young team who will, for the most part, be playing together again next season.

  • Player Profile – David Botes (Parel Vallei)

Player Profile – David Botes (Parel Vallei)

David Botes was recently honoured with Parel Vallei’s “Bulldog Award” as the matriculant who embodied the school’s values the best in his final year. He also received the Elrine Prinsloo Trophy, for his positive impact.

As his remarkable school sports career nears its end, we spoke to Botes to gain more insight into his time at Parel Vallei, and to find out about his plans for the future.

Botes played down his recent achievements, saying the award was something he hadn’t been focussed on, and he hadn’t expected to win it. “I think it’s just that whenever I do something I try to do it to the best of my abilities, whether it’s sport or studying, I don’t like doing anything half-heartedly,” he said.

This is a mantra he has lived since a young age, captaining teams in different sporting codes throughout his time at the school, while earning more than 50 first-team caps in both hockey and cricket.

You can watch school sports action from around the country on SuperSport Schools – Register now

Born in Somerset West, Botes developed his love for sport at De Hoop Primary School, where he played cricket and hockey, but also excelled as a skilled baseball player. He was part of the Western Province u11 and u12 teams and was also selected to represent South Africa at the World Cup in Taiwan.

His cricket abilities were evident from early on. In grade 8 at Parel Vallei, he captained the A-team but found himself on the field with the first team doing pre-season preparation by the end of the year.

He also played squash for the A team in grades eight and nine but gave that up as it began to clash with some of the many other sports he excelled in.

In grade 10, Botes was a reserve for the first team hockey while captaining the under-16 A team. This year, he took on the role of vice-captain as Parel Vallei’s hockey team broke into the top 30 ranked teams in the country.

“Hockey taught me a lot, not just about the sport itself, but our first-team coach, Mr. Michael Van Rensburg, also taught me a lot about the mental aspect of sports, which I could then apply to my cricket.”

In 2018 and 2019, he earned provincial colours for hockey, but he said cricket has always been his primary focus.

“I feel like you have to practice a lot more for cricket, while with other sports, you might only need to train once or twice a week and you’ll be able to play on the weekend.

Botes, at the Baseball World Cup

His love for the technical aspects of the game and his drive for perfection become evident when he talks about his current obsession. “Golf is probably my favourite sport at the moment,” Botes reckoned.

“I’ve only been playing for a year, but I really enjoy it. I like the fact that you can play with anyone. It’s very challenging, but that makes it even more enjoyable as you get better.”

After scoring more than 1 600 runs for the 1st XI, there are many memories that he treasures. He recalled his two centuries for Parel Vallei last year, one against Bishops and one at the Pearson tournament, as some of his highlights in the first team, but his innings of 121 against Curro Durbanville this year stands out, along with an historic victory over their local rivals, Somerset College.

With Botes captaining the side, Parel Vallei got one over Somerset College in “the Ashes” for the first time in 21 years.

“That was very special for me,” he said. “I was in good form before the match, but I struggled on the day, so I was so proud of how the younger guys stepped up. We won that game as a team, and that’s what makes it so amazing.”

The Ashes is a two-day derby match that most players will experience only once or twice. However, both Davids and his opposing captain, Dion Claassens, played in the game for a fourth time this year.

“When I was in grade nine we were a very young team, and to see how the players have grown over the years, until this year when we finally won it, is truly special.”

As if his schedule was not busy enough, Botes also captained the u17 Helderberg Hawks team to victory in the BPL tournament, and this year he repeated that success when he was awarded man-of-the-match in the final for the u19 Helderberg Wild Cats as they triumphed in the revamped Boland T20 League.

He will continue playing cricket next year, while he studies towards a degree in industrial engineering at the University of Stellenbosch. “I’ve practiced there a couple of times already, so I’ll be joining them again when the season starts next year,” he said.

Whatever he chooses to do in the future, you can be sure that David Botes will be setting the standard, with an untiring work ethic that Parel Vallei acknowledged in the two awards he received this year after a five-year journey filled with exceptional accomplishments.

  • Van der Westhuizen’s 155 propels Boishaai to victory over Reddam Colts

Van der Westhuizen’s 155 propels Boishaai to victory over Reddam Colts

Dian van der Westhuizen, Paarl Boys’ High

Paarl Boys’ High tallied a massive total of 406/5 in 50 overs, thanks to a batting masterclass by Dian van der Westhuizen, who struck 155 against the Reddam House Constantia Colts team, on Saturday.

Reddam won the toss and decided to put Paarl Boys in to bat first. It was a decision that came back to haunt them.

After losing two wickets, Boishaai’s Johan Wege and Van der Westhuizen slammed the pedal to the metal, sharing a spectacular partnership of 181. Wege raced to 86 runs from 78 balls and Van der Westhuizen was on song throughout his 155, blasting nine fours and eight sixes along the way.

By the time Wege was run out, they had lifted the Boishaai score from 44/2 to 225/3. Wege’s twin brother, Christiaan, seamlessly continued the onslaught, further boosting his team’s total with 46 runs from 38 deliveries.

Boishaai supporters will remember the twins’ older brother, Gysbert Wege, who scored a lot of runs for the first team during his time at the school.

When JJ van der Sandt was the next man at the crease, he confidently powered Boishaai to a towering total with a confident unbeaten knock of 57 off 29.

Van der Westhuizen’s rollicking romp was finally ended when Alex Wilson palmed a catch off of Charlie Naylor‘s bowling, but the damage had already been inflicted.

Faced with an intimidating total, the Constantia boys fought valiantly, with Naylor leading the way again, making a solid 43 at nearly a run a ball at the top of the order.

Mitchell Welch also scrapped his way to 40, but that came only after Christiaan Wege had dismissed the three top men in the order, leaving Reddam facing an uphill battle at 85/3 after 26 overs.

Though Reddam defended their wickets dourly, they were never able to bat at anywhere near the required run rate and Boishaai were able to see out the 50 overs comfortably, with Reddam House totalling only 181/8, still shy of their target by a sizeable 227 runs.

Hoërskool Bellville defeats Stellenberg in a thriller

Hoërskool Bellville pulled off a thrilling victory against Stellenberg in their own backyard on Saturday, scoring the winning run off the last ball of the game.

Having won the toss, Stellenberg sent the visitors out to field first, but their hopes of piling on the runs fell through as their batsmen struggled to find momentum.

The consistent Kyle van Santen survived for 96 deliveries and scored 46, but his strike rate of less than 50 demonstrated how difficult run scoring was. The hosts were left with 187 to defend.

Sensing an opportunity, the Bellville boys pulled together brilliantly, with each making a contribution to help their side chase down the 188 they required for victory.

Adrian van der Westhuizen, batting at nine, managed the top score of the day, missing his 50 by only two runs.

Bellville’s concerted batting effort left them needing six runs from the final over. Wiaan van den Heever rose to the challenge to guide his side to the brink of victory. Christiaan Oosthuizen then did well to get Van den Heever back on strike with the scores level and the last delivery to negotiate.

The fielders were in and the gaps tight, but Van den Heever scrounged the single that was needed to secure a memorable victory for Bellville over their big rivals from the northern suburbs.

Having won the toss, Grey elected to bat first and centuries by Dylan Garrod and Xander Elkington, bolstered by a fine innings of 87 by Tristan Grundling, saw them to a huge total.

Grundling set the tone, opening with Marco Giaconi, who also helped Grey’s cause with 46 at the top of the order.

Then, Elkington and Garrod raised the tempo when they joined forces. Garrod raced to 123 off only 72 deliveries, and Elkington amassed an unblemished 108 from 77.

To add to his display of batting prowess, Elkington picked up five wickets as Grey bowled out Woodridge for 222 in just 40 overs, leaving the visitors still 243 runs short of their target.

For the visitors, Randy Syce starred with bat and ball, top scoring with 84 runs and removing three Grey batsmen.

His courageous efforts were, however, nowhere near enough to topple a Grey High team that looks in fine form as they begin early preparations for the Grey Fest, which takes place in January next year.

Reza Salie spearheaded the SACS’ batting attack as they took to the middle first, scoring an unbeaten 89 to give his teammates a solid foundation to build upon.

The rest of the batting lineup found the going tougher, however, especially when Ihsan Khan had the ball in hand.

Khan slayed four SACS batsmen, and their knock ended in his final over, when Kyle Williams effected a run out to cut the hosts’ innings short by two deliveries.

Wynberg Boys then launched a concerted effort to chase down 236.

Paul James did his bit, racing to a well-played 68 off 75 balls but, after Fayaad Davids captured his wicket, the end came quickly.

Davids and Litha Kraai produced the good for SACS, combining for six wickets, to help their side dismiss Wynberg for 210, still 26 runs shy of the SACS’ total.

They bowled brilliantly in the final overs to deny Wynberg and Keiron Bowers took a spectacular catch to end the game.

Despite an inspired late charge by Liam Burger and Zheemo Isaacs for Paarl Gimnasium, the visiting Paul Roos Gimnasium rolled to a convincing 128-run victory, thanks to a five-wicket haul by Callum Appollis and half-centuries from Beor van Reenen and Liam Basson.

The Stellenbosch side won the toss and elected to bat, but it didn’t go well for them in the early going.

Gimmies had PRG struggling on 46/4, but Liam Burger and Beor van Reenen steadied the ship for their side, with both notching fifties, to drive the Paul Roos total to 242.

Louis Koen caused the Paul Roos batting lineup all sorts of problems, though, snaring five wickets for only 45 runs.

Koen’s father, the ex-Springbok flyhalf, Louis Koen, and his brother, Liam, who currently plays for the Blue Bulls u20 team, and who was a successful cricketer in his own right, also attended the proud Paarl school, and Louis jnr appears destined to carry on the family tradition of sporting excellence.

Liam Burger also bowled well for the hosts, capturing three wickets, and Koch van Eyssen added two more.

Paul Roos had four players selected for the u19 Boland squad for the Khaya Majola Cricket Week this year, but two of them, the matriculants’ Josh Jordaan and Cormey van der Watt, were not involved in the match against Gim. However, the younger duo of Riley Norton and Callum Appollis both shone with the ball.

Appollis tore through the Paarl Gim batting, nabbing five wickets for only 22 runs, while Norton bowled five overs, drew first blood with the second delivery of the Gim innings, and conceded only 13 runs.

The Boland powerhouse ripped the locals’ batting lineup apart. At 48/8, all hope looked lost for Paarl Gim.

Liam Burger and Zheemo Jacobs dug deep, however, putting together an impressive partnership of 57 under immense pressure. Yet, despite their efforts, Paul Roos were dismissed for 114, still well short of their target by 129 runs.

An appetising and challenging fixture awaits Paul Roos next weekend, when their stayers take on Rondebosch in preparation for the forthcoming season.

The Rondebosch Boys’ High bowling attack proved too strong for Diocesan College on Saturday.

In the final outing for Rondebosch’s graduating group – captain Jordan Neill, Bongi Mfunelwa, Graeme Engelbrecht and Alex Combrink – they met Bishops in a 50-over match on the Frank Reid Oval.

The hosts were sent to the crease first, and Bosch’s bowlers immediately launched an onslaught.

Declan Gillespie led the charge, taking three wickets for 24, but it was their collective bowling excellence that enabled them to restrict Bishops to less than triple figures. Graeme Engelbrecht tied up the tail-end with 2/5, while Alex Combrink and David Simon both grabbed a brace as well.

Cole Crawford played a steady and defiant innings of 35 for Diocesan College, but the visiting bowlers picked apart the rest of the batting lineup with ease to dismiss them for just 93.

The home team did well to regroup in a valiant attempt to defend a small target. They had Rondebosch under pressure early on, when they reduced the batting side to 18/3. All Bosch needed, though, was a solid partnership and Noah Heath and Bongile Mfunelwa delivered it to see their team to victory over their southern suburbs’ rivals.

Mfunelwa finished the game off in style, smashing a huge six to end his school cricket career on a high. He and the rest of the Rondebosch matriculants will remember the game fondly as a perfect send-off.

Next Saturday, a team of Rondebosch stayers will host Paul Roos Gimnasium for a friendly declaration match in preparation for the forthcoming season.
