  • SACS tasked with defending the South against marauding Milnerton

Milnerton will be aiming to keep their spectacular record against the southern suburb schools this season alive when they travel to take on SACS on the Memorial Field on Saturday.

The Millies’ form this season has been nothing short of exceptional. They’ve recorded a couple of memorable wins thus far and they’re showing no signs of slowing down.

After showing promise in the pre-season, narrowly missing out against Boland Landbou (18-29) and St Charles College (19-25), they found their rhythm and have taken down Rondebosch Boys’ High (34-33), Hugenote (17-14), Bishops Diocesan College (31-28), Tygerberg (82-14) and most recently, Parel Vallei (55-12).

They had to overcome large deficits in both of their matches against the other peninsular powerhouses and have shown that it’s never over for them until the final whistle blows.

Spearheaded by the Sellidon twins, Chadwin and Chadlin, the Millies’ attack has been slicing through their opponents like a hot knife through butter, with scrumhalf Devon Damons controlling the tempo from behind the scrum.

Captain Frank Hitimana has been a force to be reckoned. He represented Western Province at the Academy Week in 2023 and is making waves ahead of this year’s team selections for the annual youth weeks.

Their opponents, SACS, present a different challenge.

Bolstered by the return of their captain, Seth Bradford, and with two of their toughest fixtures for the year out of the way, SACS will be intent on defending the southern suburbs’ pride with honour.

They were beaten in two of their last three outings, going down to two of the best teams in the country, Paul Roos Gimnasium (10-28) and Paarl Gimnasium (10-35). They made a statement against Bishops, however, in between those losses, beating their rivals 29-7 on the Piley Rees Field.

Flyhalf Rayaan Solomons has been on fire for SACS and the battle between him and Millies’ no. 10 Sellidon is set to be one of the highlights of the weekend.

Paarl Boys’ High will have their sights set on another win after going down 28-40 to an in-form Grey College in Bloemfontein last weekend.

Despite that loss to the Free State giants, Boishaai impressed, and they will run onto the Piley Rees as firm favourites.

Their loose-trio – Steph van der Merwe, Rubin Dames, and Douw Wessels – shone in their last outing, causing Grey endless trouble at the breakdowns and giving their side plenty of possession to work with.

The only change to the visitors’ lineup is Tommy Muller slotting into the front row to replace their star hooker, Christiaan Grundling.

The hosts have had a challenging season so far, but the Bishops boys’ fighting spirit is undiminished, and they are bound to reap the rewards at some point.

Boishaai have already slipped up a couple of times this season, losing against Wynberg Boys’ High (27-30) Paul Roos (10-25) and Affies (21-43) before their last defeat, so the hosts will be hoping to turn their season around by adding a big name to their record on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Hoërskool Brackenfell and Hoërskool Durbanville are ready to produce fireworks in the northern suburbs.

Both sides play an exciting brand of rugby, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if their clash ends up being a quick-paced, high-scoring thriller, with a couple of tries for the highlight reel.

The Brakkies will be looking to their two playmakers, Junior Louw and Alldrick Johnson, to unlock the visitors’ defences. For Durbies, Tobie Roelofse and Claydon Carlse have stood out so far this season, and they will be keen to make an impact again this weekend.

Stellenberg will aim to build on their momentum they’ve built up against Hoërskool Bellville after they upset Garsfontein (26-22) at the Absa Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley and got the better of Bishops (25-19) last weekend.

The weekend’s schoolboy rugby action kicks off on Friday evening in Worcester where the Strand High School 1st XV will be chasing a win against Worcester Gimnasium.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools – Register now

There’s no better way to start the weekend than with a game of free-flowing rugby in the Boland and the Gimmies and Strand Eagles have been involved in a couple of thrillers this season.

Last weekend, Strand fell 15-19 short against Brackenfell High School, and before that they were on the receiving end of a Stellenberg onslaught, going down 10-76. They’ve also registered a couple of memorable wins, edging past Hermanus 31-30 and overpowering DF Malan 52-22.

The home team’s season has been dramatic, as well. They’re coming off impressive wins against Robertson (35-28) and Hoërskool Bellville (19-12) but they also lost 17-22 against the Brakkies earlier in the season.

The “Bosvarke” will look to their front row – Wilfred Slingers, Armand Croeser and Amaan Adendorff – for another big performance to keep them on the front foot, and the visiting pack will have to stand their ground to contain the Worcester dangermen.

Also keep an eye on Valentino Nomadluka and Jayd-Will de Klerk, who are likely to give the visitors headaches around the breakdowns.

The Gimmies will also have to be wary, though. Strand’s backline has been able to engineer gaps in most of the defences they’ve faced this season, with playmakers’ Lyle Julies and Heinrich April tearing it up on the wing, and halfback Jaydan Steenkamp directing the attack expertly from behind the scrum.

On Saturday, Charlie Hofmeyr attempts to keep their season’s record unblemished in front of the Ceres faithful when they take on Swartland and Robertson tackles Hermanus.

Meanwhile, Parel Vallei is in town to challenge Bellville THS and Melkbosstrand hosts Hottentots-Holland High School.

  • Wie’s baas in Bethlehem?

    FOTO: Wessel Hattingh

Agterlangs beskik albei spanne oor vurige talent.

  • Drostdy exacts revenge in Worcester

    HTS Drostdy | (Photo provided)

HTS Drostdy had to sweat to weather a spirited Hoërskool Durbanville on Saturday, but cool heads and a last-minute try allowed the hosts to snatch victory at Trappespark and avenge a big defeat in 2023.

Relive all of the action live on SuperSport Schools – Register nowLink to the game

Last year, the Durbies beat Drostdy 61-3 in a one-sided match in Durbanville, but it was clear that this time around it was going to be a tough, physical battle from the start.

Both teams came out swinging, but it took nearly 20 minutes before the Donkeys opened the scoring through Bernedict George.

The only other points in the first half of the game came from the boots of the two inside centres, with Tobie Roelofse opening the visitors’ scoring before Juandre Ungerer reestablished Drostdy’s lead.

Roelofse struck again, just after halftime, to get the Durbies to within two points before they gained the ascendency for the first time when Tiaan Kearns burst over for their opening try.

The hosts hit back, with a well-rehearsed set-piece move enabling Darius Venter to level the scores once more.

A yellow card broke the home team’s momentum and Durbanville exploited every opportunity they received to gain the upper hand again but, even with 14 men, the Drostdy attack made inroads on the scoreboard after a powerful carry by Daniel Mellet for their third five-pointer.

Fullback Dale Martin showed just how dangerous the Durbies can be in a bit of space with a sensational try. With only seven minutes left to play, the visitors held a 23-18 lead.

With two minutes to go, to the delight of the Worcester faithful, Hareld Mbuqa dived over for a try, and Josh Fourie sealed a cherished victory with the conversion.

The Donkeys did well to keep themselves within striking range throughout the contest, and they were rewarded with a hard-fought win, but the Durbies will be able to take many positives from their narrow defeat.

On the coming weekend, they take on their rivals in the northern suburbs, Hoërskool Brackenfell. It promises to be another exciting clash.

HTS Drostdy will enjoy a well-deserved break on the weekend before welcoming Hoërskool Swartland on 25 May.

Hoërskool Brackenfell edged out Hoërskool Strand, 19-15, thanks to tries by Wade Fortuin, Ntsikayomzi Njongonkulu and Migile Carlse, and the accuracy of their flyhalf, Alldrick Johnson.

Milnerton continued their dominant run of form, overpowering Parel Vallei 55-12.

Captain Frank Hitimana led the charge with the opening two tries and veteran scrumhalf Devon Damons also added to his impressive season’s try tally with a double.

Flyhalf Chadwin Sellidon starred with a 20-point contribution and his twin at fullback, Chadlin Sellidon, also crossed for a five-pointer.

Milnerton faces SACS next weekend on the Memorial A field. They’ve already dealt with Bishops Diocesan College (31-28) and Rondebosch Boys’ High (34-33) and will be eager to add another big southern suburb name to the list of teams they have conquered this season.

In Ceres, Charlie Hofmeyr showed character and discipline to chase down a 3-21 deficit and beat Oakdale’s second team 27-26. – Link to the game

The visitors scored three tries in the first half, while Charlies only got onto the board through a converted penalty by their star flyhalf, Luan Giliomee.

Tyron Davids launched the comeback after the break with the home team’s first try, and two more five-pointers, by Danico Sass and Daniel Bakkes, got them to within a single point at 20-21.

Giliomee took matters into his own hands, with 15 minutes on the clock, with a magnificent individual effort from inside his own half to put the home team in front for the first time.

Oakdale had a chance to steal it in the final moments when they scored their fourth try of the game, but the conversion crept wide, and Charlies added another impressive win to their record.

Meanwhile, Tygerberg beat Melkbosstrand by a single point and Hoërskool Punt triumphed over DF Malan, 20-16.

  • Gimmies lift the Shield for the first time in 19 years

A dominant first-half performance on Saturday helped Worcester Gimnasium claim the South Western Rugby Football School Shield, with the contest for the coveted prize being reintroduced after a hiatus since 2005.

The Gimmies shot out of the blocks with their big prop, Wilfred Slingers, barrelling over after a break by his fullback, Lorenzo Harmse.

Minutes later, flyhalf Lohenzel Jansen sliced through the hosts’ defence to score their second and, despite Robbies’ halfback pairing of Kyle Cedras and Jaydan van Niekerk combining expertly to pull one back, Jansen continued piling on the scoreboard pressure off the kicking tee.

Jayd-Will de Klerk stretched over to give the “Bosvarke” a 20-7 lead at the break.

After some stern words at halftime, the Robbies fought back valiantly to outscore the visitors 21-15 in the second stanza, but the damage done in the first half was enough for the Gimmies to lift the historic shield and revive a proud Boland legacy.

Ethan Fourie, Mychal Swart and Yannick du Plessis added to the hosts’ total, and Van Niekerk kept a perfect record off the tee, to help drive Robbies to a 28-23 lead, but Worcester struck twice in the final 10 minutes to triumph.

Playing with 14 men, Worcester drew level through Alungile Mothibe, but missed the conversion and a subsequent penalty attempt.

Just when it looked like the Robbies had quelled the visitors’ onslaught, Jansen unlocked the defence one last time to send Lukewin van Heerden over for the winner.

They were able to see out the final minutes and claim an impressive victory away from home, which has set the stage for another epic clash when they attempt to defend the Shield next season.

Bernardo Diedericks and Van Niekerk stood out for the home team with their probing runs, but the Gimmies are a never-say-die bunch, and Jansen’s heroics inspired them to another exciting victory.

Meanwhile, Hoërskool Overberg recorded a first win over Hoërskool Hermanus in 17 years.

Pieter du Toit, Johan Beukes and Favian Arendse all recorded five-pointers to help their side to a 12-point win.

Hopefield cut down Piketberg, winning 28-15, while Augsburg bested Hoërskool Vredendal 20-13.

Porterville romped to a 45-7 win against Steynville Secondary, with fullback Llewellyn Fransman and no. 8 Josh Steenkamp each dotting down twice.

Ronaldo Koker, Montagu‘s star centre and captain, scored 15 of his side’s points against Labori in a 35-14 victory.

Labori dominated in the first half, but the hosts were able to keep them tied up at 7-7.

The visitors scored again right after the break to take the lead, but the home team regrouped and did well to wrestle away control of the match.

  • JF wéér Tralies se baas in FNB Classic Clashes

    FOTO: Dirkie Groenewald

  • Keizer knocks over Bishops, Boland Landbou wins at Wynberg

    PHOTO: Warwick Richter

Stellenberg continued to build on their recent good form and weathered a spirited effort from Bishops Diocesan College in Bellville on Saturday to come away with a gritty victory.

The win comes after an outstanding 26-22 win over Garsfontein at the Absa Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley last week, where they also came tantalisingly close to upsetting EG Jansen (17-19) in their second fixture. At Bishops, they showed fine character to outscore their southern suburbs rivals.

The victory also avenged a 7-22 defeat to Bishops on the Piley Rees last season, with their burly hooker, Almero Keizer, driving Stellies to success with a hattrick of tries.

The visitors appeared much improved from their last couple of outings, and they were rewarded for their hard work early on when Ben Koenig burst over to open the scoring on the wing.

The home team got their tally ticking through the boot of fullback Dehan Neethling before Keizer went over for three five-pointers to see Stellenberg take the honours. Wing Marco Staples added a late penalty conversion for good measure.

Bishops kept battering at Stellies’ defences, though, and Jordan Petersen and Rynard Gordon were able to make further inroads on the scoreboard to get them to within six points at the end.

It doesn’t get any easier for the proud team from the southern suburbs as they get ready to host a wounded Paarl Boys’ High next weekend.

The Jade Brigade marches on to take on their neighbours, Hoërskool Bellville, next time out.

Meanwhile, Paarl Gimnasium had to sweat to keep their excellent record intact, beating Rondebosch Boys’ High 19-12. – Link to the game

The ‘Bosch boys represented their school with distinction on their home field, keeping the mighty challengers from Paarl within reach throughout the contest.

Freek de Kock opened the scoring for Gim with a brilliant counterattacking play out of his own half, but the momentum was still with the hosts. They threw everything they had at the Gimmie defenders, who remained resolute.

Paarl Gimnasium captain Kobus Blanckenberg broke through to send flyhalf Chandler Green over for their second try, but ‘Bosch hit back when Shakeel Abrahams went over in the corner after his big no. 8, Collin Paul Kemp, made the initial break.

Even without a couple of their regular starters, Hans Verster and co were able to turn over Wynberg Boys’ High on the Hawthornden Field to end Boland Landbou‘s run of bad luck away from home against their rivals that stretches as far back as 2012.

This weekend, however, the farmers had too much firepower, with Verster muscling over for 10 points and Henry Rudder and Sydney Blaauw also adding their names to the scoresheet.

Paul Roos Gimnasium continued its unbeaten season by disposing of SACS by a 28-10 scoreline. – Link to the game

Hugo Coetzee struck twice on the wing and Keenen Stoffels and Heaton Rice rounded off another dominant performance by the Maroon Machine.

Boland Landbou faces SACS next weekend, while Rondebosch takes a well-deserved break.

The biggest fixture on the horizon, however, takes place on the J.A. Kriel Field where Paarl Gimnasium tackles Paul Roos in a true battle of the giants, with both teams playing top rugby again this season.
