Cricket season slowly gets into gear in the Western Cape

Somerset College outplayed Fairmont High for a 105-run victory over the boys from Durbanville on the Taberer Oval on Saturday.

Thando Prusent and Chad Ayford continued their good form from last weekend’s T20 action. Prusent scored 79 and Ayford got to 62 to build a solid platform for the home team.

Exceptional bowling by Callum Hughes and Christopher Varie left Fairmont 105 runs short of their mark.

Hughes conceded only 10 runs and took three wickets, and Varie got a hat-trick to dismiss the final three Fairmont batsmen.

Paarl Gimnasium proved too strong for HTS Drostdy in Paarl.

Tazreeq Moerat, who played an integral role in the success of their first-team rugby at fullback this season, led the charge with the bat, scoring 33 before he was finally run out.

It was the host’s bowling attack that set them apart though, with Douglas Smith taking four Drostdy wickets, Charles King getting another three and Moerat getting in on the action again with two wickets.

Josh Neill had a massive knock for Rondebosch Boys’ High’s Colts team against Hoërskool Bellville, scoring 122 off 80 balls as they beat the team from the northern suburbs by 119 runs.

  • Viljoen stars as Grey College kicks off Diamantveld Cricket Festival in style under the lights at the Diamond Oval

Viljoen stars as Grey College kicks off Diamantveld Cricket Festival in style under the lights at the Diamond Oval

Grey College and Diamantveld opened up proceedings at the inaugural Diamantveld T20 Cricket Festival under the lights on the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Friday.

The visitors from Bloemfontein got off to a flying start through their stalwart opener, Juan Viljoen, but the hosts’ spin bowlers did well to contain Grey later on and give their batsmen a realistic target. Grey’s bowling attack was able to cause enough problems for the Diamonds to prevent them from gaining momentum and Grey won the opening match of the weekend by 53 runs.

Viljoen looks to be an extremely exciting T20 prospect for Grey Bloem.

He gave the crowd something to get excited about from the off, scoring 45 from only 22 deliveries, setting the pace with seven boundaries in total with four fours and three sixes.

Viljoen then matched this performance later with the ball in hand, taking two wickets as a bowler and combining well with his captain and wicketkeeper, Hayden Tolmay, for a runout.

His performance in the opening game earned him the man-of-the-match award and he is definitely one to keep an eye on throughout the rest of the weekend.

Darion Rabie also had a solid four overs for the winning team, taking two wickets and conceding a mere 15 runs.

Luhan de la Rey and Nathan Baird bowled very well to contain the visiting batsmen after the initial burst by Grey.

It was a ball by De la Rey that finally dismissed Grey’s talisman, Viljoen, when he couldn’t get a solid connection and Aiden Jacobs took the catch to deny him his half-century.

Though the hosts never really looked on pace to catch the visitors’ total, they played well to see out the 20 overs with Kaiden van Wyk leading their attack with an innings of 27.

This would have been the first time many of these boys got the opportunity to play on the oval, which will stay with them as a cherished memory in the future when some of them will be returning as professionals. Apart from giving the players an opportunity to experience playing in the stadium at night in front of a large crowd, this tournament is also part of Northern Cape Cricket and Diamantveld’s initiative to develop the talent in the area and get the boys playing against some of the strongest teams in the country.

    Summarized Scorecard:

Grey College 150/7 (Juan Viljoen 45, Ruben Maree 31, Samu Lephoto 23, Zack Hattingh 21; Danie van der Merwe 2/39, Kaiden van Wyk 2/44); Diamantveld 97/7 (Kaiden van Wyk 27; Darion Rabie 2/15, Juan Viljoen 2/17). Grey College won by 53 runs.

The majority of the teams competing on Saturday were in action at the Hoërskool Middelburg leg of the series last weekend, where last year’s overall winners, Secunda, claimed the crown with a 19-12 victory over Ligbron in the final.

The Middies had to make do with third place at their home tournament but will be hoping to improve on that result this weekend in the absence of Secunda.

Their big local rivals, HTS Middelburg, claimed the Plate last weekend by comprehensively beating Oosterland by 29 unanswered points in the final.

Two wildcards are the visiting Helpmekaar College from Braamfontein and Milnerton from Cape Town.

Helpmekaar’s u15 team were victorious in Bethlehem at the Witteberg sevens tournament two weeks ago, and Milnerton have been competing well against some of the best teams in the country at the various Western Cape meetings over the last couple of weeks.

Kanonkop was knocked out by the eventual Bowl champions, Ermelo, last weekend in the semi-finals by 31-26, and they will be hoping to go further in front of their home crowd.

The Blitzbokke will play three games against the All Stars Academy team, starting after the group stage games at 12:50, before playing again after the semis at 14:50 and finally drawing a line under what promises to be an action-packed weekend with the last game at 17:10 after the finals.

The All Stars Academy is based in Pretoria and run by Ludwiche van Deventer, giving school leavers the opportunity to develop both on and off the field and providing opportunities to play rugby on an international platform.

They regularly play against the Blitzbokke and participate in various international tournaments, including the Dubai Sevens.

Poel A – Garsfontein, Tom Naude, Wesvalia.

Poel B – Noordheuwel, Menlopark, Transvalia, Pietersburg.

Poel C – EG Jansen, Dinamika, Waterkloof, Lichtenburg.

Poel D – Secunda, Hugenote, Marais Viljoen, Monument.

Somerset College outplay DF Malan in pre-season T20

As we get ready for the end-of-year cricket action to get started Somerset College and DF Malan got the ball rolling with a pre-season T20 match on the Taberer Oval on Monday.

The hosts set up an impressive 195/9 with Chad Ayford and Jonno Firth scoring 59 runs each.

Ayford opened for Somerset College and smashed seven quick sixes to get to his total in only 22 deliveries.

Firth repeated the trick off of only 40 balls, adding seven fours and three sixes to his tally.

The hosts then backed up their dominant batting display with some efficient bowling, containing the DF Malan batsmen to 79/9.

Thomas Parsons took three wickets and only conceded four runs in his three overs.

Erian Vorster managed to survive long enough to score 33 runs for the visitors, but their opening five batsmen were dismissed for a combined total of only seven runs by the effective Somerset College bowling attack and they never managed to gain any real momentum.

Their u15 teams also faced off and Somerset College won that match by 58 runs.

The hosts scored 156/5 in 20 overs with Dawid de Klerk contributing 45.

They then bowled out the DF Malan boys with only one ball left in the game for 98 to secure the double for Somerset College on the day.

They face Fairmont High School on Saturday for a 50 Overs match before the Cape Schools festival at the end of the month.

    Summarized Scorecard:

Somerset College 195/9 (Chad Ayford 59, Jonno Firth 59, Callum Hughes 26, Extras 20; Daniel du Plessis 2/24, Benjamin Grobler 2/38, Charl Botha 2/46); DF Malan 79/9 (Erian Vorster 33; Thomas Parsons 3/4, Dion Claassens 2/10). Somerset College won by 115 runs.

  • Kimberley verwag krieket-skouspel by Diamantveld Fees hierdie naweek

Kimberley verwag krieket-skouspel by Diamantveld Fees hierdie naweek

  • Grey is bobaas in Bloemfontein

    Grey is bobaas in Bloemfontein
