Milnerton and Melkbosstrand look to return to winning ways on Friday

NewsG BrackenfellWith both Milnerton and Melkbosstrand coming off losses over the last weekend, they will be itching for a chance to end their seasons on a positive note at their final big derby of the season on Friday.

Milnerton ran into an in-form Stellenberg team last Friday, losing 24-7, while Melkbosstrand had a difficult day against Brackenfell (48-15).

Friday’s match is the perfect opportunity for both teams to add another highlight to their respective campaigns as the winter sports season nears the end.

The last meeting between these two teams came down to the wire, with Melkbosstrand taking the victory, 16-15.

The visitors will be relying on the experience and composure of their fullback, Cyle Theys.

His winger, Ashton Januarie, came off the bench to score in their previous outing and will be keen for a chance to make an impact this weekend again.

The host’s inside centre, Frank Hitimana, is an exciting player to watch and could have a pivotal role to play for his team on Friday,

His big eighth man, Liberty Nyashanu, is also a livewire and one to keep an eye on.

On Saturday, Tygerberg and Brackenfell take each other on in a big northern suburbs FNB Classic Clash.

The Tigers will be desperate to get back to winning ways after Hoërskool Durbanville gave them a 91-0 hiding last week.

Brackenfell also went down against the Durbies the weekend before that but only lost by 45-10.

Last weekend, Brackenfell beat Melkbosstrand quite comfortably by 48-13 to get back to winning ways and they will want to keep that momentum going for this weekend’s clash.

The big eighth man, Raiden Rodney, came on as a substitution in that game and scored twice.

Rodney starts this weekend and will want to add to his tally.

  • Charlie Hofmeyr and Robertson might be the highlight on a weekend filled with derbies

Charlie Hofmeyr and Robertson might be the highlight on a weekend filled with derbies

As the rugby season draws to a close in the Western Cape, this weekend sees a number of big derbies bring an end to another exciting year of schoolboy rugby.

Watch along live on SuperSport Schools Register now

Charlie Hofmeyr will be looking to end their season strong against Robertson.

Both teams are bolstered by the return of two of their star players. Luan Giliomee from Charlie Hofmeyr, and Bernardo Diedericks from Robertson, were part of the SA u18 Sevens team that earned bronze at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

Giliomee slots in at flyhalf for Charlies, while Diedericks might make an appearance off the bench for Robertson.

When these two teams met last year in Robertson, the Charlies had to grind out a 35-34 victory, after Robertson clawed their way back from 28-5 down at halftime.

This match promises to be one of the highlights of the weekend, as both teams have been playing some really exciting rugby this season.

Robertson has had two of their games cancelled after the winter break but showed no signs of rust as they beat Langenhoven Gimnasium 26-12 last weekend.

After a flying start to the season, Charlie Hofmeyr has experienced two losses recently against Montagu (21-17) and Worcester Gimnasium (22-12), and they will be desperate to end their season on a high.

The home team’s winger, Lawrence Jantjies, has been a pillar for his team in Giliomee’s absence. If they can combine well this weekend they can ask a lot of questions of the Robertson defence.

For Robertson, their lively centre, Séan-Douglas Cedras and his lightning-quick winger, Mullan Burger, are two of the dangermen to keep an eye on Saturday.

Charlies are without their big lock, Le Roux Groenewald, and flanker, Tyrone Davids, who are both still recovering from injuries obtained during the season.

Porterville also hosts Piketeberg for their big inter-schools clash this weekend.

Porterville has been one of the standouts in the Boland this year and contributed five players to the Boland Craven Week team that competed in George earlier in the year.

Brendon September (winger), Callum van Staden (scrumhalf), Jandro Phutego (flanker), Ricky Lesch (hooker) and RW Duggan (prop) from Porterville were all selected for the provincial team.

Van Staden is not available for Saturday’s match, but the rest will all be on their posts to try to end their season on a high.

Their challengers are no pushovers though. Piketberg has been playing an exciting brand of rugby all season, spearheaded by the efforts of their evasive centre, Gelermore Baron and his dynamic flyhalf, Altino Pedro.

Worcester Gimnasium will want to draw a line under what has been a very successful season with a strong performance when they visit Hermanus.

Apart from beating most of their local rivals this year, including keeping Charlie Hofmeyr tryless as they handed them a 22-12 defeat in their own backyard, the Gimmies also pulled off a very impressive victory against a highly ranked Durban High School earlier in the season by 36-31 at the annual Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.

Players like Jovawn Visagie (fullback) and Hope Dliso (winger) have been electric in a bit of space, while Noah Pietersen (prop) and his mates up front have been providing opportunities with their hard work.

When these two teams met last year in Worcester, Gimmies were the victors by 13-10, they will be looking to back that performance up this weekend to draw their season to a close.

Swartland and Hugenote will take each other on for the 47th time as they bring their seasons to a close with a festive finale in Malmesbury

The Faure Stadium in Paarl will be packed for the third consecutive weekend when Paulus Joubert and Noorder-Paarl conclude their seasons with a big inter-school clash this weekend.

To the East, in Oudtshoorn, Langenhoven Gimnasium and Hoërskool Punt are competing in their big derby for a chance to end the season on a high.

Last year, Punt took the spoils with a 10-0 victory, so the Gimmies will be anxious to set the record straight this year.

Despite having a mixed season, Hoërskool Punt showed their steel recently with a big 24-18 victory against Daniel Pienaar from Uitenhage.

  • Oldest schoolboy rugby derby in the country continues when SACS host Bishops

Oldest schoolboy rugby derby in the country continues when SACS host Bishops

NEwsGSACSPaarlGimSACS and Diocesan College are celebrating their 150th year of rivalry this year, with Bishops getting the first victory by 31-25 earlier in the season, SACS will be looking to level the scores in the return fixture on Saturday.

Wynberg Boys’ High will be looking to build on a strong performance last weekend, when they beat Bishops 27-20 after losing to them earlier in the season (14-10). They will be hoping to have the last laugh against Rondebosch Boys’ High this weekend as well.

Rondebosch won the first game against Wynberg this year by 20-16 at home earlier in the year and the hosts will be excited for the opportunity to get their retribution this weekend.

Catch all of the action live on SuperSport Schools Register now

Bishops’ playbreaker scrumhalf, Haashim Pead, stood out when they beat SACS earlier in the year, and he has been a central part of their attack throughout the season. Pead is unavailable this weekend, as he has been selected as part of the SA u18 team to play England on Saturday.

Kashief Joseph steps up to fill his boots on Saturday, with the benefit of having the experienced Shaywan Blankenberg (flyhalf) next to him.

The visitors’ fullback, Gilermo Mentoe, has also been exceptional this year, helping them defeat all three of their southern suburb rivals in the first round of fixtures, and earning a spot in the SA A team after his performance at the Craven Week in George.

Nic Allison (centre) got over the line for Bishops the last time they played against SACS and will be looking to repeat the success of that weekend.

SACS big Craven Week tighthead prop, Ikhona Maxegwana, has been a stalwart for his side, leading the charge from the front since their captain, the loosehead prop, Ali Osman-Bosch, suffered an injury earlier in the season.

The dynamic centre, Daniel Dayaram, has assumed the captaincy and will be in the thick of it again on Saturday, trying to help his team to a victory over their age old rivals.

Throughout their illustrious histories both of these schools have produced some outstanding alumni.

SACS have 32 Springboks among their graduates, from Ben Duff, who played in the Sprinboks’ first ever test match, to Percy Montgomery who ran out for the national team 102 times.

Diocesan College have 42 Springboks who have walked their grounds, including Barry Heatlie who captained the Springboks to their first ever test win in 1896 when the beat the British Isles 5-0 in Cape Town.

Most recently Dillyn Lleyds earned his first cap in 2017.

Wynberg Boys’ High look for retribution when they host Rondebosch Boys’ High after their loss earlier in the season, but they will have to do without their captain, Xola Nyali (flanker), who has been selected for the SA u18 team to face England on Saturday.

Nyali also captained the SA u18s earlier in the week when they lost to France by 37-24.

Jarrod Jackson replaces him in the back row next to Euwyn Liberty (flanker) and Aden da Costa (eighth man) who have been extremely effective for their team on defence and in turning over the ball.

They played well to set the record straight against Bishops last weekend and will be looking to their speedsters, Brandon Ashburner (centre) and Xolela Hoyi (winger) to spearhead the attack.

Hoyi will be starting at fullback this weekend to cover for the injured Matthew Ould, making space for Tyrone Gombe on the wing.

Rondebosch have looked strong all season, with players like Nichollas Molyneux (fullback) and Juma Amissi (winger) looking dangerous in space, and the two industrious flankers Sunday Mailoni-Burns and Polite Phiri also being notable every weekend.

    The teams are:

SACS vs Diocesan College at 12:15:

SACS: 15 Aya Machuli, 14 Nick Reynolds, 13 Daniel Dayaram, 12 Raashied Conrad, 11 Ilitha Ntinini, 10 Rayaan Solomons, 9 Seth Bradford, 8 Niche Koopman, 7 Ben van Coller, 6 Richard Skeeles, 5 Khwezi Ndlovu, 4 Zach Kennedy, 3 Ikhona Maxegwana, 2 Alex Pybus, 1 Tumelo Noah.

Diocesan College: 15 Gilermo Mentoe, 14 Ayanda Bonoyi, 13 Olo Sopotela, 12 Nic Allison, 11 Lucca Mynhardt, 10 Shaywan Blankenberg, 9 Kashief Joseph, 8 Aidan Norris, 7 Alex Smith, 6 Tapiwa Nkumanda, 5 CJ Gordon, 4 Zach Willemse, 3 Nashe Chahwahwa, 2 Merlin Fransman, 1 Richard Horton.

Wynberg Boys’ High vs Rondebosch Boys’ High at 12:30:

Wynberg Boys’ High: 15 Xolela Hoyi, 14 Matteo Pascoe, 13 Brandon Ashburner, 12 Amier Adams, 11 Tyrone Gombe, 10 Yaqeen Ahmed, 9 Sange Mbuto, 8 Aden da Costa, 7 Euwyn Liberty, 6 Jarryd Jackson, 5 Michail Kasfikis, 4 Montgmomery Loggenberg, 3 Luqobo Makwedini, 2 Nicholas van Schalkwyk, 1 Aidan Reid.

Rondebosch Boys’ High: 15 Nichollas Molyneux, 14 Juma Amissi, 13 Juandre Welthagen, 12 Mathew Malherbe, 11 Ethan Gordon, 10 Dylan Miller, 9 Cameron Whitson, 8 Ryan du Rand, 7 Sunday Mailoni-Burns, 6 Polite Phiri, 5 Tom Barnard, 4 Carl Geddie, 3 Zev Schapiro, 2 Thomas van Wyk, 1 Justin Amos.

Oakdale Landbou t. Boland Landbou om 13:00:

Oakdale Landbou: 15 Waylon Kortjie, 14 Duraan Janse van Rensburg, 13 Louis Fourie, 12 Kurt Coetzee, 11 Therlow Prins, 10 Zandre Conradie, 9 Tian Ferreira, 8 Erick Steyn, 7 Migail Barnard, 6 Hanno Louw, 5 Roy Viljoen, 4 Hanre Jubelius, 3 Devon Windvogel, 2 JC van Wyk, 1 Marco Steyn.

Boland Landbou: 15 Dewald de Villiers, 14 Wehan Lume, 13 Ruan Jongsma, 12 Albie Bester, 11 Enslin Claasen, 10 Retagan van Rooi, 9 Turlon Adams, 8 AJ van der Merwe, 7 Alru Gous, 6 Hans Verster, 5 Ruan Viviers, 4 Karst Smits, 3 Pieter de Jager, 2 Cilliers Viljoen, 1 Christoff Etzebeth.

  • Grey College has to produce some magic at home to secure unbeaten season

Grey College has to produce some magic at home to secure unbeaten season

    PHOTO: Marnus van Wyk/Grey College

Grey College is on the brink of adding another perfect season to its rich rugby history on Saturday when they host Paul Roos Gimnasium for their annual FNB Classic Clash at 14:00.

Catch all of the action live on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Grey has looked to be in a league of its own this year, winning all 15 of their matches so far this season with some world-class performances against the strongest teams in the country.

Their dominance has, of course, also caught the attention of the national selectors and six Grey players have been selected for the South African u18 group to compete against England.

Captain, JJ Theron (eighthman), Ranon Fouché (prop), Jean Erasmus (prop), Marno Stopforth (lock), Christiaan van der Westhuizen (scrumhalf) and Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf) are all unavailable for the last game of the season as they make part of the SA u18 group. Paul Roos is also without Riley Norton (lock) who has been called up to the team to face England.

This fixture has clashed with the u18 international games for a number of years with both schools regularly producing some of the best players in the country.

The Grey College captain has no doubt about the abilities of the boys who will be taking their places for Saturday’s clash.

“Every one of them deserves to be there, in that moment, because they worked just as hard throughout the season,” said Theron.

His message to the players tasked with protecting the team’s unbeaten record for the season is simply, “The entire Grey family is standing behind you and backing you all the way.”

This will be the 36th encounter between these two proud schools, and Paul Roos will be looking for their 10th victory.

Last year Paul Roos not only managed to beat Grey’s first team for the first time since 2015 (34-19), but they also won the u19B, u16A, u15A and u14A games in a very wet Stellenbosch, so the Bloemfonteiners will have a point to prove throughout the age-grades this year.

Paul Roos’ captain and flanker, Andreas Oosthuizen, his big prop, Ryan Jack, and centre, Phillip Groenewald, were in the victorious starting fifteen for the team from Stellenbosch last year and will hope to end their school rugby careers by backing that performance up with another big win.

Theron, Van der Merwe, Stopforth, Fouche and Erasmus played in the Grey team last year and will not have the opportunity to get their revenge on Saturday, but their big line-breaking flanker, Jean-Henri Smit, was also in that team and will be itching for the chance to help set the record straight this year.

Keegan Scholtz covers the eighth man position for Grey in the absence of his captain, which makes room for Juan Venter to start at flanker. Emile McGeer and Danie Kruger fill out the front row, where they will have a huge role to play in asserting their dominance over the pack from Stellenbosch.

Schalk du Plessis starts at lock in place of Stopforth who joins the SA U18 squad straight after coming back from Trinidad and Tobago where he captained the SA U18 Sevens team to a bronze medal at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games.

Pharrel van Wyk, Grey College’s big Craven Week flyhalf gets to start in the place of Van der Merwe, with Phillip Mclaren at scrumhalf.

For Paul Roos, the only change is Charl Hollwill starting at lock while Norton is away.

Norton is only in grade 11 this year and will be a player to watch next year, having already made the SA U18 group. He is also a keen cricketer and was selected as a non-travelling reserve for the SA U18 cricket team earlier in the year.

Grey’s backline remains mostly unchanged and the hosts will be looking to players like their centre-pairing of Benito Goeda and Pieter van der Merwe to lead their attack.

While Grey has stood out this season, Paul Roos has produced a number of extremely impressive performances as well.

They beat Paarl Boys’ High in Paarl for the first time in twenty years by 35-17 with their two big props, Jack and Oliver Reid having a massive impact on that game.

If the Maroon Machine can dominate the battle up front again in Bloemfontein they may be able to cause Grey some problems.

Paul Roos will need to be at their best though, and after being subdued by Boland Landbou in Paarl in their previous match and losing by 28-12, they need to find their rhythm again quickly if they are to topple the Bloemfontein giants.

The visitors are bolstered by the return of their live-wire centre, Samuel Badenhorst, who was also part of the u18 Sevens team.

Their captain, Oosthuizen and his eighthman, Reuben Kruger, have been enforcers for their team this season and will undoubtedly be bringing that same physicality to Bloemfontein over the weekend for the fixture that both schools look forward to the most throughout the season.

The battle between the flyhalves will also be an interesting one to follow on Saturday.

Van Wyk is the more physical of the two but Paul Roos’ Lee-Jay Petersen has combined brilliantly with his lively little scrumhalf, Zeke January, to manage the game all season and in a fixture that has been decided by the smallest of margins, goal kickers are always of the utmost importance and whoever steps up to the kicking tee in the place of Grey College’s trusted regular flyhalf, Ian van der Merwe, will have a big responsibility on their shoulders.

Whatever the outcome, a derby between two of the powerhouses in South African school rugby never disappoints, and Saturday promises to be another classic.

Theron se wedstryd is egter weens ‘n besering kortgeknip.

“As jy daardie navy Grey-trui oor jou kop trek dan kry jy superkragte.

    Puntemakers:

Outeniqua 38 (8) – Drieë: Estiaan Cronje (2), JJ Daters, Luca Potgieter, JT Strydom, Elgeron Meyer. Doelskop: Meyer. Strafdoele: Strydom, Meyer. HTS Drostdy 19 (0) – Drieë: Adrian Vergotine, Wilbré Klaase, Strafdrie. Doelskop: Josh Fourie.

    Ander tellings;

    o.16 – HTS Drostdy 18, Outeniqua 17.
    o.15 – HTS Drostdy 31, Outeniqua 3.
    o.14 – Outeniqua 19, HTS Drostdy 5.

  • Fichardtpark struikel teen Jim Fouché in Vrystaat-eindstryd

    Puntemakers:

Jim Fouché 31 (10) – Drieë: Stefan Venter, SW van der Merwe, Altus du Plessis, Dillon Calitz, Tristan van der Walt. Doelskoppe: Van der Walt (3). Fichardtpark 25 (17) – Drieë: Martin Kalp, Zaine van Zyl, MJ Hattingh. Doelskoppe: Dailen Geldenhuis (2). Strafdoelle: Geldenhuys (2).

Brandfort 29 (8) – Drieë: Wehan Strydom (3), Gustav Maree. Doelskoppe: Henre Smith (3). Strafdoel: Smith. Zastron 27 (8) – Drieë: Mawethu Magudela (2), WG Rautenbach, Thabang Momoshela. Doelskoppe: Reinico Nel (2).

    Puntemakers:

Welkom Gimnasium 29 (19) – Drieë: Ronaldo Kiewiet (2), Ethan Jones, Raylin Kirsten. Doelskoppe: Kiewiet (3). Strafdoel: Kiewiet. Voortrekker 26 (0) – Drieë: Kamohelo Moses, Dawie Fourie, Kaneng Komane, Craig Mann. Doelskoppe: Johan Whitehead (3).

    Ander uitslae:

    o.15 – Voortrekker 35, Witteberg 17.

  • New Orleans beat Klein Nederburg for a record fifth consecutive time in FNB Classic Clash

New Orleans beat Klein Nederburg for a record fifth consecutive time in FNB Classic Clash

NewsGNewOrleansNew Orleans are the victors for the fifth consecutive FNB Classic Clash after scraping by with a 13-8 victory against Klein Nederburg in another classic Paarl-derby on Saturday at the Faure Street Stadium.

Catch all of the action again on SuperSport Schools Register now

While the annual derby between Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys’ High that takes place the weekend before is widely considered to be the biggest inter-schools clash in the world, some see the yearly battle between the two other proud local schools, New Orleans and Klein Nederburg, as an even bigger event.

Saturday’s rugby match lived up to all the expectations, with both squads giving their all in what they will remember as the highlight of their school rugby careers.

Since 1994, these two schools have been facing each other every year, with New Orleans enjoying the majority of the success over the years but Klein Nederburg have always made their rivals work their spoils, as is evident by the small margins most of these games are decided by.

Klein Nederburg drew the first blood on Saturday, with their talisman flyhalf, Abre Klein, converting a penalty within the first five minutes to gain the advantage.

New Orleans responded through their dynamic fullback, Je-Leo Philander, and though the rest of the first half was a stale-mate there was no lack of action.

Within minutes of fronting up to each other, most of the players wore the evidence of the physicality of the match on their chalk-smeared faces, looking like the warriors they were on the day. There were some hilarious questions for the referee by the players, exciting line breaks, monstrous tackles and even a case of mistaken identity with a yellow card all within the first 35 minutes before the two teams went to have their team talks and orange slices at half time still locked at 3-all.

New Orleans’ flyer, Jayden Solomons (winger), scored both of his team’s tries in the second half.

The first came after a brilliant run by his outside centre, Wade Bergstedt, who expertly got the ball out to Solomons to dive over.

The second was scored with four minutes left on the clock. Solomons turned on the after-burners to break the Klein Nederburg supporters’ hearts, shortly after his team received a red card for a dangerous tackle and scored what would turn out to be the winning try.

Klein Nederburg competed valiantly, despite the loss.

Their winger, Hugan Joseph, scored their only try after some quick thinking by his inside centre, Thorston Morkel, who recognized the opportunity to take a free-kick quickly and blast the ball across the field to his waiting winger who had a wide-open try-line in front of him.

The lively little scrumhalf, Eldo Draghoender, also deserves a mention for his efforts on the day.

For the victors, Philander was a standout, along with his flanker, Fayaaz Hendricks, and winger, Rozario Davids.

All in all, apart from some disciplinary issues and an injury that seemed serious to a Klein Nederburg player, this derby was a wonderful advertisement for schoolboy rugby, with both teams stepping up to produce a performance to match the hype.

    The scorers:

New Orleans 13 (3) – Tries: Jayden Solomons (2). Penalty: Je-Leo Philander. Klein Nederburg 8 (3) – Try: Hugan Joseph. Penalty: Abre Klein.
