  • Montagu hosts Charlie Hofmeyr, Robertson take on Langenhoven Gimnasium

Montagu hosts Charlie Hofmeyr, Robertson take on Langenhoven Gimnasium

Charlie Hofmeyr looks to return to winning ways when they travel to Montagu on Saturday.

The Charlies have looked unstoppable this season again, until they ran into Worcester Gimnasium last weekend, who managed to end their winning streak for the second year in a row with a 22-12 victory in which they prevented the team from Ceres from scoring a single try.

Charlies’ fullback, Lawrence Jantjies, scored all their points off the kicking tee in that match and has been instrumental to their success throughout the season. He will be one to watch this weekend.

They are still without their star flyhalf, Luan Giliomee, who is travelling back from Trinidad and Tobago where he earned a bronze medal as part of the SA U18 Sevens team at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games.

They also take the field without their big grade 11 lock, Le Roux Groenewald, who has just undergone surgery on his knee and will be out of action for the rest of the season as well as their star flanker, Tyron Davids, who has also just come out of surgery on his nose.

Montagu have been experiencing a solid season themselves though, and will be looking forward to the opportunity to add another big name to their list of victories this year.

Last weekend the Montagu boys showed immense character in protecting their unbeaten record against Bredasdorp which they have held since 2010 in an epic 8-5 thriller.

The hosts struggled against Langenhoven Gimnasium, losing by 38-7, but showed grit the weekend before that to beat Overberg by 28-26.

Their lightning-quick winger, Liam Pekeur, has been one of their standout players and will also have a big role to play on Saturday.

Charlie Hofmeyr will want to build some momentum before their big inter-schools against Robertson next weekend.

Robertson will also be desperate for some game time, as their last two matches have been called off, first due to the weather, and then the taxi strikes.

So the Robertson boys will be itching to get on the field when they travel to Oudtshoorn to play Langenhoven Gimnasium on Saturday.

Their last match, on the 22nd of July, was a romp in the Winelands when they beat Hoërskool Stellenbosch by a massive 87-0.

Luke Davids (eighth man) and Mullan Burger (winger) both scored a hattrick in that match.

The hosts are no pushover though, and they are coming off a strong 47-10 victory over York High last weekend.

Their big eighth man, Charles Jacobs, looks to be at the top of his game at the moment, and their dynamic little scrumhalf, Jayden Arends, has been phenomenal with ball in hand and off the kicking tee.

    Kalahari t. Diamantveld om 13:20:

Kalahari: (Moontlik) 15 Tikane Tstollo, 14 Philanso Phillips, 13 Thlompo Matilo, 12 Janco Reinecke, 11 Nathaniel Mbane, 10 Tshepo Matonkonjane, 9 Nico Thomatos, 8 SW van Heerden, 7 Molema Machaba, 6 Juandre Beeby, 5 Pieter Swanepoel, 4 Wian Taljaard, 3 Duan Roodt, 2 Lesego Thebeegae, 1 Robert Blaauw.

Diamantveld: 15 Liam Ferris, 14 Kyle Taute, 13 Kaliq Jacobs, 12 Marno Greef, 11 Lehan van der Westhuizen, 10 Ethan Manus, 9 Dirk van Heerden, 8 JJ Fourie, 7 Diwan Muller, 6 Achiles de Jager, 5 Daniël Kuhn, 4 Llewellyn Bartch, 3 Lu-Gene Coetzer, 2 De Wet du Plooy, 1 FJ de Fries.

Second round of southern suburbs derbies kick off on Saturday

NEwsGSACSPaarlGimThe southern suburb teams begin their second run against each other to draw a close to the season on Saturday.

Diocesan College hosts Wynberg Boys’ High for a rematch after the Bishops boys beat Wynberg by 14-10 earlier in the year for the first time since 2019.

Meanwhile, SACS travel to Rondebosch Boys’ High to attempt to avenge their 22-7 loss earlier in the season.

There will be a 15-second moment of silence observed for the Wynberg Boys’ High pupil, Ryder Kossatz, who is still listed as missing after being washed off the rocks at Llandudno beach on Wednesday, the first team will also be wearing black armbands in honour of their schoolmate.

Wynberg’s centre, Amier Adams, scored their only try in their last encounter with Bishops. He and his teammates will be looking to get one back over their rivals on the Piley Rees on Saturday.

Diocesan College, on the other hand, are attempting to repeat the triple crown, after already beating their three big competitors in the area. They got past Wynberg on the first time of asking and also saw away with Rondebosch Boys High (13-8) and SACS (31-25) earlier in the season.

Their Craven Week fullback, Gilermo Mentoe, has been instrumental to their success, and is definitely one to watch this weekend, as he has already shown his ability to get through the smallest of gaps in the defence.

Lucca Mynhardt, their speedster on the wing, is another exciting player to keep an eye on as are the two other players who represented Bishops at the Craven Week along with Mentoe this year, Aidan Norris (eighth man) and Shaywan Blanckenberg (flyhalf).

Hashim Pead, who was also part of the unbeaten Western Province team at the Youth Week in George, misses this fixture as he has been selected as part of the SA Schools team to face France on Tuesday.

Wynberg’s captain, Xola Nyali (eighth man), is also part of the SA Schools team and will not be on the field this weekend.

Rondebosch Boys’ High were able to beat SACS in their own backyard earlier in the season, but SACS have looked fired up of late and will be keen to return the favour on Saturday.

The visitors are still without their injured captain, the big prop, Ali Osman-Bosch, and they lost against an in-form Boland Landbou in their last match, but they have had a week to regroup and recover, and looked strong in their game against Hoërskool Durbanville where they managed to hold Durbies to a 22-all draw on their home field.

The Rondebosch forwards determined the game in their last meeting, and the likes of Justin Amos (prop) and Carl Geddie (lock), who scored in that game, will need to be at their best again this weekend to set the pace of the game and keep the visitors at bay.

    The teams are:

Diocesan College vs Wynberg Boys’ High at 12:30:

Diocesan College: 15 Gilermo Mentoe, 14 Ayanda Bonoyi, 13 Olo Sopotela, 12 Nic Allison, 11 Lucca Mynhardt, 10 Shaywan Blanckenberg, 9 Jashief Joseph, 8 Aidan Norris, 7 Alex Smith, 6 Tapiwa Nkumanda, 5 CJ Gordon, 4 Zach Willemse, 3 Nashe Chahwahwa, 2 Merlin Fransman, 1 Richard Horton.

Wynberg Boys’ High: 15 Matthew Ould, 14 Matteo Pascoe, 13 Brandon Ashburner, 12 Amier Adams, 11 Xolela Hoyi, 10 Yaqeen Ahmed, 9 Sange Mbuto, 8 Aden da Costa, 7 Euwyn Liberty, 6 Jarrod Jackson, 5 Michail Kasfikis, 4 Montgomery Loggenberg, 3 Luqobo Makwedini, 2 Nicholas van Schalkwyk, 1 Aidan Reid.

Rondebosch Boys’ High vs SACS at 12:15:

Rondebosch Boys’ High: 15 Nichollas Molyneux, 14 Juma Amissi, 13 Juandre Welthagen, 12 Matthew Malherbe, 11 Ethan Gordon, 10 Dylan Miller, 9 Cameron Whitson, 8 Ryan du Rand, 7 Sunday Mailoni-Burns, 6 Altha Wesi, 5 Tom Barnard, 4 Carl Geddie, 3 Cole Macdonald, 2 Thomas van Wyk, 1 Justin Amos.

Welkom Gimnasium and Voortrekker battle it out for the Griffons league title on Saturday, the winner of this match also qualifies for the Kovsie League semi-finals against the Griqua League champions and the two Free State representatives, who will be Jim Fouché and Fichardtpark.

Welkom Gimnasium has been an exciting team to follow all season. With some big victories and reels full of entertaining tries, the Gimmies aim to collect some silverware as a reward for all their hard work on Saturday.

Over their last eight matches, Welkom Gimnasium has been able to score more than 40 points against seven of their opponents, including last weekend, when they beat Noord-Kaap 58-12 with a comprehensive performance in the semi-final.

By their own admission though, their focus is not on the margins of their victory, as long as they continue growing and playing good rugby their eyes are set squarely on the title.

Last year Hoërkool Trio were crowned champions after beating Voortrekker 21-14 in the final in their debut season.

The Trekkers got their revenge last weekend when they eliminated the newcomers with a hard-fought 27-24 victory.

Getting through Welkom Gimnasium this weekend, however, will require their strongest performance of the season.

When they last met in Welkom earlier in the year, the Gimmies cruised to a 43-8 victory.

Their talisman flyhalf, Ronaldo Kiewiet, was on top of his game in that match, scoring 13 points off the kicking tee.

Kiewiet went on to be the top scorer at this year’s Craven Week in George and has not shown any signs of slowing down since.

He’s scored seven tries in the three matches since the start of the term and seems to have added drop goals to his arsenal, scoring two opportunistic three-pointers recently.

The Trekkers have to take on this challenge without their two first-choice hookers, Arnold Ras and HJ Spalding, who are both out with injuries. Hendrik Matthee has stepped up well to fill their boots.

They also lost their fullback, Tiaan van Rooyen, and their star winger, Kamohelo Moses, last weekend. Kaneng Komane, one of their standout players throughout the season, covers at the back while Karabelo Chaka and Thinus Hefer will start on the wings.

Apart from Kiewiet, the rest of the Welkom backline also poses a number of threats in the form of the Goeda twins, Naylen (fullback) and Naven (winger) who seem to be able to score from anywhere, and speedsters like Teschan Meas (centre) and Julian Samuels (scrumhalf) who also have a knack for beating defenders.

This game promises a lot of action and some beautiful tries, with both teams playing an exciting brand of rugby this season. This will be a fitting final to an entertaining season and one would suspect that the winners of Saturday’s match should be among the favourites in the Kovsie league.

    The teams are:

Welkom Gimnasium vs Voortrekker at 13:20:

Welkom Gimnasium: 15 Naylan Goeda, 14 Naven Goeda, 13 Teschan Meas, 12 Mojalefa Matoka, 11 Khamohelo Mokoena, 10 Ronaldo Kiewiet, 9 Julian Samuels, 8 Ethan Jones, 7 Raylin Kirsten, 6 Lawrence Lamiene, 5 Jayden Auld, 4 Tristan Appollis, 3 Keanan August, 2 Dante Smith, 1 Buhle Mxabayi.

Voortrekker: 15 Kaneng Komane, 14 Karabelo Chaka, 13 Hein Smith, 12 Craig Mann, 11 Thinus Hefer, 10 Johan Whitehead, 9 Alexander Maree, 8 Dawid Fourie, 7 Alberto Argentino, 6 Jayden de Jesus, 5 Harry Kymdell, 4 Luttig Roux, 3 Cecil Parsons, 2 Hendrik Matthee, 1 Francois Maree.

Hierdie wedstryde vind Saterdag by die Windhoek Draught Park in Kimberley plaas.

Stellenberg faces Milnerton at 20:20 tonight to kick off the weekend’s fixtures before Hoërskool Durbanville takes on Tygerberg on Friday.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Last weekend, Milnerton got the best of Parel Vallei by 26-24 after seeing away with DF Malan by 33-22 the weekend before, but the Stellenberg boys have looked tuned-in of late and seem set on finishing their season with strong performances in their last games.

The home team’s nimble centre, Frank Hitimana, leads their attack, much in the same way as another Milnerton old boy, the Springbok, Damian de Allende, would have done when he wore the Millie jersey.

and their eighth man, Liberty Nyashanu, has also stood out for Milnerton this season.

For the visitors, their goal-kicking centre, Ruben Thompson, and top try-scorer flanker, Marco Ferreira, are the ones to keep an eye on.

Luc Cilliers starts at left wing, and Heinro Swart stands in for their regular scrumhalf, Clyde Frieslaar. Those are the only changes to the Stellenberg starting lineup from the team that faced Outeniqua and just narrowly lost through a penalty conversion in the final moments (10-8).

Last weekend, Stellenberg returned to winning ways with a comfortable 43-21 victory over Hoërskool Bellville.

The Jade Brigade look primed to end their season strong, and it will take a massive effort by the hosts to stop them tonight.

Hoërskool Durbanville also looks to carry on building momentum in their clash with Tygerberg.

The Durbies have had an excellent season, beating Paarl Boys’ High (26-25), Rondebosch Boys’ High (35-19) and HTS Drostdy (61-3) to name only a few.

They saw away their rivals Brackenfell last weekend with a comprehensive 45-10 victory and will hope to capitalize on the momentum and carry it through until they face Stellenberg in their big derby and final match of the season.

Their electric centre, James Nero, is not available for this weekend’s game yet as he is still returning from Trinidad and Tobago where he was the top scorer in the SA U18 Sevens team that earned bronze at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games.

Nero’s absence is, of course, noted, but the Hoërskool Durbanville boys have no lack of options for pace in the backline.

Valrhino Olckers (fullback), Cayden Louw (winger) and Monray Daars (scrumhalf) have been exceptional for their side this season, as Durbanville seems to be scoring tries for fun at the moment.

Even their eighth man, Jayden Nell, who has already committed to SARU Sevens next year, can turn on the after-burners when needed.

Tygerberg lost to Swartland 16-10 last weekend after beating Melkbosstrand 22-17 the weekend before.

The Tygerberg Tigers’ pair of locks, Tyrique van Reenen and Gian Brand can take inspiration from those who have come before them, as the Springbok locks, Marvin Orie and Eben Etzebeth, both wore the Tygerberg jersey before them

What bodes ominously for the hosts though is the fact that HTS Drostdy beat them by 73-5 only a month after Durbies annihilated the team from Worcester by 61-3.

They will need to be at their very best to avoid another big score on Saturday.

    The teams are:

Milnerton vs Stellenberg at 20:20 on Friday:

Milnerton: 15 Keegan Wood, 14 Carl Moatshe, 13 Morgan Lodewyk, 12 Frank Hitimana, 11 Qhamani Mangele, 10 Devon Damons, 9 Raqeeb Kaspery, 8 Liberty Nyashanu, 7 Cole Wegeworth, 6 Ethan Wilson, 5 Dylan Peverett, 4 Keenan Togni, 3 Khanyisa Tafeni, 2 Keagan Harding, 1 Liam Ross.

Stellenberg: 15 Dehan Neethling, 14 Liam Smith, 13 Estian Steyn, 12 Ruben Thompson, 11 Luc Cilliers, 10 Tyron Labuschagne, 9 Heinro Swart, 8 Dale du Toit, 7 Marco Ferreira, 6 Alex Schoeman, 5 Corne Bruwer, 4 Zian Erasmus, 3 Herman Lubbe, 2 Almero Keizer, 1 Niel de Beer.

Tygerberg vs Hoërskool Durbanville at 11:20 on Saturday:

Tygerberg: 15 Higgen White, 14 Therlow Goudhard, 13 JD Pombo, 12 Luke Moses, 11 Mikyle Philander, 10 Marius Griebenow, 9 Shane Steenkamp, 8 Dillon Fillies, 7 Zuhayr Pillay, 6 Prince Misengue, 5 Tyrique van Reenen, 4 Gian Brand, 3 Ashton Maloy, 2 Ezra Glover, 1 Ethan Abrahams.

Hoërskool Durbanville: 15 Valrhino Olckers, 14 Damian Hendrickse, 13 Lian Jordaan, 12 Blane Marais, 11 Cayden Louw, 10 Shaun Klein, 9 Monray Daars, 8 Jayden Nell, 7 Evert Bouwer, 6 William Goldswain, 5 Liam Baird, 4 Rikus Saaiman, 3 Anru van Rhyn, 2 Devon Strydom, 1 Wian Koen.

Hoërskool Outeniqua will play one final match against HTS Drostdy on Saturday to bring an end to what has been an exceptional season to celebrate their centenary year.

Catch all of the action live on SuperSport Schools Register now

When these two met last year, HTS Drostdy emerged as victors with 13-9.

Repeating that success this year, however, would be one of the upsets of the season, as the Kwaggas have only lost to Grey College (19-17) and Garsfontein (19-8), the two schools at the top of the rankings this year.

They proved they deserve to be mentioned among the big names this year with another epic match against an in-form Paarl Gimnasium, recently holding the Powerhouse from Paarl to a 10-all draw in George.

Since then, they have returned to winning ways, beating Stellenberg 10-8 in their penultimate fixture of the season.

JT Strydom (fullback), JJ Daters (winger), Ashwen Damons (winger) and Nathan Smit (hooker) have been some of their most impressive players this season. They were among the 15 Kwagga players who represented their school in the SWD Craven Week team that competed at the annual Youth Week which was hosted by Outeniqua in July.

In their final match of the season, they pass the torch to some of the younger players who will be tasked with continuing the legacy next year, like the young flyhalf, Andrew Stopforth and the replacement scrumhalf, Elgernon Meyer, who have both already shown their value this year.

Over their 100 years of existence, Outeniqua has produced some top-quality players, like Springboks Johan Heunis, Marco Wentzel, Warrick Gelant and our World Cup Flyhalf, Manie Libbok all attended the proud school in George.

Other notable alumni include Duhan van der Merwe who currently stars for Scotland and Faan Conradie who toured with the Springboks in 1965 but never got the opportunity to play a test.

HTS Drostdy has had more of a mixed season.

They’re coming off a 31-24 loss in a closely fought match against an in-form Oakdale after putting up a massive 73-5 against Tygerberg just before the break.

Their two flankers, Ettiene Claasen and captain Matt Romao, have stood out for the team from Worcester and will have a big role to play this weekend again.

The hosts are without their star flanker, Jeffwin Wesso, who was selected as a part of the SA U18 Sevens team that recently earned the bronze medal at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad & Tobago. An injury sustained in the match against Paarl Gimnasium limited his involvement in the tournament, but he is undoubtedly a young player with a bright future ahead of him.

Since 2005 HTS Drostdy has only beaten the Kwaggas twice; once in 2018 and once last year. Handing the hosts their third loss in their centenary year would be a massive achievement for the Drostdy boys, but it will take an immense effort to upset the Outeniqua on their home field.

    The teams are:

Outeniqua vs HTS Drostdy at 13:30:

Outeniqua: 15 JT Strydom, 14 JJ Daters, 13 Luca Potgieter, 12 Estiaan Cronje, 11 Ashwen Damons, 10 Andrew Stopforth, 9 Jamil Pretorius, 8 Brendon Gouws, 7 Dewald Gerber, 6 Ruart Curlewis, 5 Jayden Potgieter, 4 Michael Cronje, 3 Juan Kleinhans, 2 Nathan Smith, 1 Ruan Swart.

HTS Drostdy: 15 Graham Thompson, 14 Adrian Vergotine, 13 Aljay Skippers, 12 Kenneth Jansen, 11 Bernedict George, 10 Josh Fourie, 9 Corné van Schalkwyk, 8 MJ van der Westhuizen, 7 Matt Romao, 6 Ettiene Claasen, 5 Marcus Lee, 4 Piet Erasmus, 3 Tertius Wantenaar, 2 Daniël Mellet, 1 Walter Schoeman.

Klein Nederburg jag eerste oorwinning teen New Orleans sedert 2016 in groot Paarl-derby

New Orleans het reeds vier agtereenvolgende oorwinnings in hierdie jaarlikse bepaling.

  • South Africa u18 Sevens earn bronze at Commonwealth Youth Games, Scotland shocks Fiji in final

South Africa u18 Sevens earn bronze at Commonwealth Youth Games, Scotland shocks Fiji in final

SpringbokSevensThe SA u18 Sevens team won the Bronze Medal at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad & Tobago with a dominant 52-0 display over Canada in the final match of their campaign on Tuesday.

After losing to Scotland narrowly by 19-17 with a last-second try on Monday, the Baby Blitzbokke would need to beat Fiji on the final day to secure a rematch with the U18 Flying Fijians in the final.

The physicality of the Fiji boys seemed to rattle us early on in the match, and by the time we found our rhythm it was too late, they managed to hold on to the lead for a 17-10 victory, leaving South Africa to compete for the bronze.

James Nero, from Durbanville, who has emerged as one of the standout players over the course of this tournament, scored against the mighty Islanders and Gino Cupido, from Strand, also got over the line in that match.

Nero scored 10 tries during the tournament, the most of any South African player, and is definitely a player with a bright future ahead of him, whichever format he chooses to pursue.

In the third-place playoff against Canada, the boys raised their game to end the tournament on a high. After beating them 38-0 on Monday, South Africa seemed to shift up a gear on Tuesday, running 52 unanswered points by the Canadians.

Northwood’s Siyanda Nkosi has also been a standout at this tournament, crossing the line four times against Trinidad & Tobago earlier in the week.

Both Nkosi and Nero scored a final brace each in the match against Canada, Samuel Badenhorst, from Paul Roos, and Siyabonga Ndlozi, Westville Boys’ High’s flyer, both also stood out for their team in that match.

Scotland shocked the top-seeded Fiji in the final of the tournament.

After trading equal blows in the first half, they went into the break at 10-all.

Fiji’s captain, Ralulu Josaia, received a second yellow card early in the second half leading to a red card.

Scotland looked to have stolen a famous victory, scoring with less than a minute left in the game to take a 20-15 lead, but Ratu Seruisavou, who has been amazing for Fiji throughout the tournament, got over the line after regulation time had elapsed to force the Scots into extra time.

With the tournament rules stating that in the event of extra time, the first team to score wins, and Scotland still being a player up because of the red card, they were able to secure a famous upset over Fiji, who looked to be the clear favourites throughout the week.

Having lost to Fiji 32-5 on Monday, the Scots should be commended for turning it around before their game against SA, and carrying the momentum through to the final to be crowned the Commonwealth Youth Games rugby sevens champions for 2023.

    Scorers:

    Final:

Scotland 25 (10) – Tries: Ben Morriss, Fergus Watson, Jack Craig, Ritchie Mitchell, Ross Burnie. Fiji 20 (10) – Marika Rabonu, Nasoni Tuifaloa, Ratu Seruisavou, Mariko Ravuiwasa.

    Group stage:

Fiji 17 (5) – Tries: Marika Rabonu, Ponipate Kurewaka, Mariko Ravuiwasa. Conversion: Anasa Korotini. South Africa 10 (5) – Tries: Gino Cupido, James Nero.
