Fichardtpark will be looking to continue asserting their dominance and build on their undefeated record for the season when they host Goudveld-Hoërskool in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The Fichie Lions have been unstoppable this year, and they have recently been rewarded for their hard work during the season when Jaco Grobbelaar became their first player ever to be selected for the SA Schools team.

Their big lock has played a crucial role in their success this season, along with his scrumhalf, Devanté Claassen, the two wingers, Edward Mpinga and Janco Mollentze and their hooker, Luhan du Plessis.

The visitors are yet to get their first win in the Wesgrow series this year, and playing against Fichardtpark in Bloemfontein will not be an easy fixture at all.

Jim Fouché travels to Witteberg for their fixture.

Their captain and Craven Week hooker, Stefan Venter, has been their talisman this year. He and his forward pack come up against a Witteberg side who have impressed over the holiday, with many of their players excelling over the holiday at the VKB Week and the Rhino Week.

Their eighth man, Daniel Meintjies, and scrumhalf, Dries Stemmet, have been the standout players for the team from Bethlehem this year.

Their neighbouring school, Voortrekker, hosts Diamantveld for their clash.

The Diamonds found their form before the break with two impressive wins over Duineveld (30-15) and Hoërskool Trio (21-15).

They will look to continue building on that momentum this weekend. Their Academy Week centre, Simon Liversage, starred for the Griqua team in Johannesburg over the holiday, and their Griqua Craven Week players, Valentino Lenge (centre), Kyle Taute (winger), JJ Fourie (flanker), Achiles de Jager (flanker), FJ de Fries (prop) also performed well in George.

Voortrekker also had three players in the Griffons Craven Week team, with their lively scrumhalf, Alex Maree, their fullback, Tumi Khoza and their big prop, Cecil Parsons being selected to represent their province at the highest level for their age grades.

Their big hooker who can run like a winger, Arnold Ras, was also a standout performer at the Academy Week.

Hoërskool Trio had seven players in the Griffons Craven Week team and they will be looking to assert their dominance over Sentraal who have struggled to realize their full potential this season.

Their flyhalf, Byron Biennas, and centre, BJ Pelser, also combined exceptionally well at the Academy Week, leading the charge for the Griffons at that event.

Noord-Kaap gaan kuier in Kuruman by Hoërskool Kalahari.

Die Northerns geniet ‘n sterk seisoen sover en spog met groot seges oor Sentraal (43-0), Landboudal (26-5), Milnerton (38-24) en in die groot Kimberley-derby teen Diamantveld (18-17).

Hul kaptein, Eldridge Jack, speel ‘n kernrol in hul sukses.

Durbies looking to show their worth against SACS this time around

NewsGDurbanvilleThe rugby season resumes in Cape Town after the school holiday break during which some of the best players from the Western Province competed at the Craven Week, where WP went unbeaten after a triumphant final match against the Blue Bulls (29-5) in George.

Now everyone is back in their school colours and ready to pick up the season where it left off.

Catch all the action on SuperSport Schools Register now

Two old rivals face each other when Hoërskool Durbanville and SACS meet at 12:20 on Saturday.

In 2017 SACS demolished the Durbies 100-0, running 16 unanswered tries by them. Jordy Hop who now plays wing for the Netherlands was part of that SACS team.

Hop sent an application video to SACS from the Netherlands, wishing to play rugby in South Africa and went on to play a vital part in the team that also beat Paarl Gimnasium (22-19), Boland Landbou (22-18), St Andrew’s College (24-15) and Michaelhouse (28-0) that year.

Durbanville beat SACS 33-24 in 2019, but lost again last year, 13-6.

This might prove to be their year again, as they have been enjoying some incredible form this season, scoring more than 50 points against five of their opponents already this season, and managing a famous 26-25 victory against Paarl Boys’ High early in the season.

Their electric centre, James Nero, has recently been selected as part of the SA U18 Sevens squad that will be competing at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago in August.

He is one of the backline players who can cause a lot of trouble for SACS if they allow the Durbies to control the speed of the game, along with the likes of Valrhino Olckers at fullback and their flyhalf, Monray Daars.

SACS’ standout player has been their captain, Ali Osman-Bosch (prop), but he is unavailable for this game due to injury. Tumelo Noah takes his place in the squad and centre, Daniel Dayaram, assumes the captain’s role.

His front-row partner, Ikhona Maxegwana (prop) represented their school at the Craven Week in George as part of the Western Province XV. Though they have had a difficult season, they have shown glimpses of their potential throughout and will know they have a proud record to defend.

Diocesan College, who have been the top dogs in the Southern Suburbs this season, begin their term with a game on Friday against Haileybury from the United Kingdom, and their second stringers play Rugby School on Saturday, a British independent school that has been around for 456 years.

The Western Cape schools kick off their third term rugby action this weekend with some great matchups.

On Saturday, the Boland Landbou boys go to town to take on Paarl Boys’ High and Oakdale Landbou travel to Stellenbosch to face Paul Roos on the Markötter.

Catch all of the action live on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Last year Paarl Boys’ High beat Boland Landbou convincingly 47-22 in their own backyard which was their 12th straight victory in this yearly fixture.

The last time Boland Landbou toppled Boishaai was in 2009 when Springbok prop, Frans Malherbe, was captain of Paarl Boys’.

They also beat Paarl Gimnasium 14-12 that year.

Bertie Visser was in that team for Boland, Visser went on to play winger for the Leopards where he held the record for the quickest try ever scored in the Currie Cup. Visser needed only nine seconds from the kickoff to dot down, his record stood from 2012 to 2016.

The Gimmies have been in exceptional form this year again.

JC Mars (fullback), Jameel de Jongh (winger) and Divan Fuller (flanker) have recently been selected as part of the SA Schools team that will be competing against England and France in August. Scott Nel (winger) has also been chosen for the SA A group.

Albie Bester (centre), Cilliers Viljoen (hooker) and Christoff Etzebeth (prop) from Boland Landbou were in action with those players from Boishaai at the Craven Week over the holiday in George, where the Western Province team ended the week unbeaten after seeing away with the Blue Bulls 29-5 in the final match.

Though they obviously combined well at the tournament, all new friendships will be put aside when they jog onto the field on Saturday for what has always been an entertaining and physical battle between these two proud schools.

Oakdale had a couple of tough losses before the holiday break, going down against Paarl Gimnasium (36-12), and drawing against Stellenberg (13-all), they have proven what they are capable of already this season though, with impressive victories over Paarl Boys’ High (20-17) and EG Jansen (18-5) and they will be looking to return to winning ways with a statement against one of the in form teams in the Western Cape, Paul Roos.

In contrast, Paul Roos has been excellent all season, apart from two losses against Paarl Gimnasium (24-19) and Monument (44-26) they have been faultless and have done away with some of their fiercest competitors like Paarl Boys’ High (35-17), Affies (31-25) and Grey High (38-24) already this season.

The home team’s centre, Samuel Badenhorst, has been named as part of the SA U18 Sevens squad travelling to Trinidad and Tobago in August for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Their big flanker who is only in grade 11 this year, Riley Norton, was one of the standout players at the Craven Week and represents Paul Roos in the SA Schools team. His teammate, the tighthead prop, Ryan Jack, has also been honoured with his inclusion in the SA A team after his performance over the holiday.

Two other players to look out for on Saturday are their spritely scrumhalf, Zeke January, and their reliable eighth man, Reuben Kruger.

The Stellenboschers have looked like they’ve been getting better with every match, and if they can keep up the momentum they had before the break, they can cause a lot of problems for the boys from Riversdal.

    The teams:

Outeniqua looks to add another big victory to their record in their centenary year when they host Paarl Gimnasium in George on Saturday.

Watch the game live on SuperSport Schools at 13:00 – Register now

This promises to be an excellent way to kickstart the term’s remaining fixtures, with two schools with such a competitive history facing each other while both seem to be in top form.

Over their last 10 encounters, Paarl Gimnasium have won five, including their previous meeting in 2019 when they walked away victorious after a gruelling battle which they won by 11-8.

The year before that Gimmies beat the Kwaggas comfortably, scoring 57 unanswered points, but judging on the quality of rugby both schools have showcased this season, Saturday’s encounter promises to be another nail-biter.

Of the other five matches, Outeniqua won four and in 2012 the match ended as a draw on 17-all. They played later that same year and Outeniqua won 30-22.

That 2012 group of Outeniquas included the likes of Warrick Gelant and Duhan van der Merwe, while a young Handré Pollard was captaining Paarl Gim.

The hosts have only lost twice this season, narrowly losing out to Grey College 19-17 on their home turf before also coming up second-best against Garsfontein at the Absa Wildeklawer Tournament in Kimberley.

Their playmaker fullback, JT Strydom, has recently been selected for the SA A team after excelling at the Craven Week which took place in George during the holidays.

Jeffwin Wesso, their agile flanker, has also been named as part of the SA u18 Sevens squad that will be representing the country at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago in August.

Their opponents pose no easy challenge, however. Paarl Gimnasium are the in-form team in the Western Cape and apart from a 33-12 loss to Grey College earlier in the season, their record is without blemish this year.

Their star flyhalf, Kyle Smith, was part of the Western Province team that went unbeaten at the Craven Week after beating the Blue Bulls 29-5 in the final game. He has been selected as part of the SA Schools team that will play against France and England in August.

His big lock, Danio Botha, has also been a pillar for his team this season and represents Gimmies in the SA A team.

Paarl Gimnasium has long been one of the top rugby schools in South Africa, having produced 25 Springboks over the years with the latest being the exciting new addition to the Springboks’ scrumhalf options for the World Cup, Grant Williams.

Outeniqua has been a growing force on the schoolboy rugby scene, and they have shown some massive talent in their 100th year to secure their place among the top five this year. A win at home against the Paarl giants will be a great achievement for the Kwaggas to top off what has been a successful season already.

  • SA Schools sweat against second stringers before Mars takes them home

SA Schools sweat against second stringers before Mars takes them home

The incredible depth of South African schoolboy rugby was on show as the SA Schools U18 side had to work hard for a 36-26 win over the SA Schools U18 “A” team at the Boland Stadium.

Watch the game on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

The SA Schools captain and eighth man from Grey College, JJ Theron, was phenomenal for his side. Leading from the front by carrying the ball strongly and being rock-solid on defence. His game was cut short with an injury early in the second half, which will be a major blow if it turns out to be serious.

He initiated the first try of the day, breaking through the defensive line and doing well to get the ball to his hooker from King Edward VII, Siphosethu Mnebelele, who barged over for the first score.

The courageous captain then got over the line himself, five minutes before the break, to regain the lead for his side after an inspired period of attack by the SA A team saw them take a 14-7 lead through a try by the industrious flanker from Daniel Pienaar, De Wet Fourie, and a penalty try which they forced through a strong driving maul.

Fichardtpark’s first-ever Springbok Schools player, the big lock, Jaco Grobbelaar, drew his side equal after Mnebelele paid forward the earlier favour by his captain by showing equally impressive handling in contact to get the ball to Grobbelaar who burst over the line.

Grey College’s star flyhalf, Ian van der Merwe, converted all three tries for the SA Schools team in the first half to give his side a 21-14 advantage at halftime.

The SA A team looked fired up after the break and Noordheuwel’s lightning-quick winger, Cheswill Jooste, needed only a minute after the kickoff to score and show that they had no intention of rolling over without a fight.

Unfortunately, the SA A team also suffered an injury when the Diocesan College fullback who has been showing a lot of promise throughout the season, Gilermo Mentoe, had to leave the field minutes after coming on as a substitute.

A flurry of substitutions by both squads to give every player as much game time as possible had no impact on the intensity of the game. In fact, it was the SA Schools replacement hooker from Helpmekaar, Ruan Welman, who scored a brace to help his side build a buffer to protect against the unceasing SA A attack.

The SA A team managed to level up the scores for the third time in the game when their substitute scrumhalf from Monument, Ceano Everson, scored a beautiful try after some sensational athleticism by his centre, Benito Goeda, from Grey College.

Both SA A scrum-halves, Everson and Garsfontein’s Brooklyn Newman played well and kept the SA Schools forwards awake around the rucks.

With only five minutes left on the clock, after Welman’s second try, SA Schools were holding on to a slender 31-26 lead but the SA A team had them pinned to their own goal line and it looked as if they were going to steal a big statement victory before JC Mars, the SA Schools fullback from Paarl Boys’ High who is one of the seven players who has been selected for a second time after having already played for the SA Schools teams last year, started on the halfway line and stepped around the defenders, as he so often does, to score the final try of the day, sealing the victory for the SA Schools team.

The other six returning players are JT Strydom, Jameel de Jongh, Divan Fuller, Danio Botha, Ulrich van der Westhuizen and Christian Everett.

Mars and his winger from Maritzburg College, Luyanda Kunene, combined well at the back and caused a couple of problems for the SA A team when returning kicks.

Their centre from Garsfontein, Demitre Erasmus, stood out on defence. The lively speedster who has made a name for himself with his try-scoring ability and his highlight reel interceptions showed that he can also apply his ability to read the game on defence, making a couple of crucial tackles just when it looked like SA A might be gaining some momentum.

For the SA A team Fourie and his flanking partner from HTS Drostdy, Matt Romao, were solid when defending and their fullback from Outeniqua, JT Strydom, was also reliable at the back and exciting when he had a bit of space.

Both of these teams have recently been selected, after the Craven Week in George earlier this month, to represent the country at U18 level and this was the first opportunity they had to play together.

Not only did the game show how much talent there is in South Africa, with the SA A team very nearly toppling the first-choice SA Schools team, but it will also have been the perfect preparation for both squads and invaluable information for their coaching teams as they get ready to represent the country.

    Scorers:

SA Schools 36 (21) – Tries: Ruan Welman (2), Siphosethu Mnebelele, Jaco Grobbelaar, JJ Theron, JC Mars. Conversions: Ian van der Merwe (3). SA Schools “A” 26 (14) – Tries: De Wet Fourie, Cheswill Jooste, Ceano Everson, Penalty Try. Conversions: Yaqeen Ahmed, Dominic Malgas.

The Golden Lions beat Western Province by 29-20 in the main match of the Academy Week at Jeppe in Johannesburg to be crowned unofficial champions.

Watch all the Academy Week games on SuperSport Schools – Register now.

The home team outclassed Western Province in the first-half, scoring three tries while WP’s only points came off the boot of their flyhalf from Paarl Boys’ High, Marno Pretorius.

It took only a minute from the first kickoff for the Lions to strike when Timi Oluwule, their speedster winger from King Edward VII, scored his first try of the day.

Mehlomakulu was in on the action later again when he picked up a loose ball in his own 22-meter area and put on the after-burners to outpace everyone and run the length of the field for his second try.

Despite having an uncharacteristically difficult kicking day, the Lions’ star fly-half from King Edward VII, Vusi Moyo, did well to maintain his composure and continued to contribute by carrying the ball well and being rock-solid on defence.

He also set up the second try for the Lions after a strong run up the field allowed Jade Muller, their fullback from Noordheuwel, to round off in the corner.

Their third try was created through a magnificent offload by their hooker from Noordheuwel, Jaundre Schoeman, who controlled the ball excellently in contact to put his flanker from Helpmekaar, Ulrich Swart, over.

Because none of the tries were converted, Western Province were right back in it early in the second half when their replacement hooker, Christian de Villiers, benefited from a sloppy Lions lineout and pounced for WP’s first try,

This seemed to energize the WP players and it looked like they might be able to launch a comeback, but the Lions’ big prop from Noordheuwel, Martin Nel, knocked the wind out of their attack when he scored ten minutes later, running a beautiful line like a real centre and powered through the last couple of defenders for a beautiful try.

For the Lions, Moyo and his centre and captain from Jeppe, Exauce Kevani, looked exciting whenever they touched the ball.

The ever-reliable Pretorius was a standout player for Western Province, along with the flanker from Wynberg Boys’ High, Aden da Costa, who was one of their top performers throughout the week. Da Costa had the last word for Western Province, scoring in the 69th minute, but it was much too little, too late for his team.

The WP bench seemed more up for it in the second half, and both of their tries were scored by players who came off the bench at halftime.

It is important to note that Western Province had two teams competing at the Craven Week in George, so their Academy team is the third team to be filled out of the province, while most of their competitors were the second choices in their respective unions. This shows the depth of the Western Cape, as they were still one of the favourites coming into the week.

In the curtain-raiser to the final match, the Griffons pulled off a huge upset against the Sharks.

Their midfield-pairing from Trio, Byron Bienas (flyhalf) and Ethan Smith (scrumhalf) were unmissable again, scoring all the Griffons’ points between them.

Their flanker from Voortrekker, Jayden de Jesus, and centre from Witteberg, Kenyon Morat, also had solid games, helping their side beat last year’s champions in a thrilling 15-13 battle.

For the Sharks, Nkulukelo Sithole, the sturdy eighth man from Maritzburg College stood out, but last year’s champions from KZN were simply not ready for the intensity of the Griffons’ attack, playing most of the game in their own half.

The Griquas also managed an unlikely victory, cruising past Eastern Province 32-11 to end their Academy Week campaign unbeaten.

The Diamantveld centre, Simon Liversage, played a huge role in that game, pinning the Eastern Province in their own half with his massive boot and punishing them off the kicking tee.

    Puntemakers:

Rooikatte 44 (24) – Drieë: JJ Steenkamp (3), Luke Webber (2), Luke Sass, Zander Wessels. Doelskoppe: Jaedon de Leeuw (3). Strafdoel: De Leeuw. Luiperds 10 (3) – Drie: PW Smit. Doelskop: Albert Joubert. Strafdoel: Joubert.
