Hilton kicks-off ISRF with convincing victory over St Stithians

Hilton College showed just how much depth they have on the first day of the Independent Schools Rugby Festival at St Andrew’s in Bloemfontein when they comfortably beat St. Stithians College by 43-5 with a team consisting only of players who will still be eligible to play first-team for them next season.

All the games are available on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now.

In the absence of some of their star players, like flyhalf and captain, Chris Horak, who was in action for the Sharks Craven Week team against the Bulls at the Noordvaal Bondedag, some of their stayers stepped up and showed that the future is looking bright for Hilton College rugby.

In particular, Horak’s replacement at flyhalf, Xola Makongolo and Hilton College’s 16-year-old eighth man, Emmanuel Dankwah, put on a dominant display for the team from KZN.

Hilton controlled the game from the start and showcased some exciting running rugby to set the mood for the Curry Cup final taking place at the Free State Stadium just up the road.

All the players had the opportunity to go watch the Cheetahs take on the Pumas for the title after the first day’s action.

In the penultimate matchup of day one, the hosts, St Andrew’s, showed their intent but ultimately came up just short against St David’s Marist.

In what was a thriller of a match, the hosts may feel that they left a couple of points on the field, deciding not to attempt to convert kickable penalties on two occasions.

The visitors from Johannesburg took their chances, and their lively scrumhalf, Diego Ferreira‘s penalty conversion was enough to secure the 24-21 win for St David’s Marist.

Kearsney are looking like the team to beat at the festival this year. They played against an invitational team from St Albans, also consisting of stayers.

They were ruthless in the first half and their big loose forward, Simanye Mlakalaka, looked unstoppable, scoring two tries for his team.

The boys from Pretoria did extremely well to regroup at half time though, and despite being down 40-5 at the break, they matched their opponents in the second half.

The second day of the festival takes place on Monday, when St Andrew’s faces CBC Boksburg in what promises to be an exciting matchup, and Kearsney take on Cornwall Hill in the final match of the day.

St Andrew’s will look to find the inspiration they need to live up to the promise shown on the first day, and Cornwall Hill have a big challenge waiting for them when they face Kearsney.

  • Cornwall Hill College made Kearsney sweat during Day 2 of ISRF

Cornwall Hill College made Kearsney sweat during Day 2 of ISRF

NuusG KearsneyKearsney College had to dig deep to hold on to a 15-7 lead against Cornwall Hill College on the second day of the Independent Schools Rugby Festival at St Andrew’s in Bloemfontein.

Watch all the ISRF games on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Despite being a low-scoring game, the final match of the day provided plenty of excitement as the Cornwall Hill College boys kept asking questions of Kearsney, but the side from KZN was resolute on defence and managed to hold on to their lead.

Kearsney took an early 12-0 lead thanks to a try and conversion by their dynamic fullback, Daniel Eagar, and a try by the winger, Rogan Strydom but their opponents from Centurion never dropped their heads, and after their eighth man, Jon-Luc Snyman, got them on the board it looked like they found new energy and they kept within reach of Kearsney to the very end.

The hosts, St Andrew’s, realized some of the potential that they showed glimpses of on the first day.

After just coming up short 24-21 against St David’s Marist on day one, the home team put on an impressive performance to beat CBC Boksburg 46-5.

Their fullback and captain, Connor Nell, played a dream game, leading by example and scoring a hat-trick in front of the home crowd.

Clifton also had to hold on to survive an inspired second-half onslaught by St Stithians.

Despite looking strong and scoring three tries after the break, St Stithians had allowed Clifton to do too much damage in the first half and couldn’t make up the difference.

After this 29-19 victory and Saturday’s 29-8 win against Union High, they can leave the festival with a 100% winning record if they manage to beat CBC Boksburg in their final match.

Hilton also continued on their impressive run of form with their team of stayers blowing through St Alban’s College’s Invitational XV 64-3 after beating St Stithians 43-5 on the first day.

They face St David’s Marist on the final day and the team from Johannesburg will need to be at their best to avoid becoming Hilton’s third victim this week.

St. Andrew’s play against Kearsney in the main match of the final day and the home team will see this as a golden opportunity to show their intent by taking down a big name at their home festival.

The Kearsney boys have a day off to recover from the physical toll their last battle must have had, knowing they can also make it three from three if they beat the hosts on Wednesday.

  • Independent Schools Rugby Festival celebrates 40 years in City of Roses

Independent Schools Rugby Festival celebrates 40 years in City of Roses

The Independent Schools Rugby Festival celebrates its 40th year of existence when a new chapter is written into the rich history of this festival at St Andrew’s School in Bloemfontein.

Watch the festival live on SuperSport Schools Register now.

Nine independent schools from across South Africa will be competing at this year’s event, along with a Free State Development XV.

Two notable omissions this year are last year’s host, St Andrew’s College, from Makhanda, and Diocesan College, from Cape Town.

These two schools are playing in their own derby on the Friday before the tournament in Makhanda.

After the first round of matches of the ISRF on Saturday, the players will all have the opportunity to go to the Currie Cup final at the Free State Stadium to watch the Toyota Cheetahs take on the Airlink Pumas for the title.

Some of the teams will be affected by the loss of their players who have been selected for the different Youth Weeks which are also kicking off next week.

Both Hilton College and St Alban’s College have opted to select a team of stayers, so this festival will be a good indication of areas they can improve on before next season, and the participating boys are sure to benefit from the experience.
