Jim Fouché beleef self ‘n sterk rugby jaar.

Paul Roos Gimnasium pulled off a famous victory at Brug Street on Saturday, when they beat Paarl Boys’ High at home for the first time in 20 years.

Watch the game again on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

The home team came out swinging, scoring the first try within 40 seconds of the first kickoff.

JC Mars, their firecracker fullback who has just returned from injury was in on the action immediately, darting through a gap after his hooker, HB Odendaal, put him into space with an expertly timed short ball.

The visitors from Stellenbosch continued applying pressure though, and their two big props, Oliver Reid and Ryan Jack, both scored to give Paul Roos a 12-5 lead at halftime.

Having gotten through the fabled Boishaai defence twice in the first half already, and seemingly also winning the battle for physicality, Paul Roos had their tales up at the start of the second half.

Their livewire scrumhalf, Zeke January, scored almost a mirror image of the home team’s first try, also within 40 seconds from the kickoff.

The hosts managed to hit back with a try of their own through their workhorse flanker, Rubin Dames, but it was not enough to swing the momentum back in their favour.

Leejay Petersen (flyhalf), who has stood out already this season, knocked over three penalties, giving his side a 16-point lead and knocking the wind out of the home team.

The big grade 11 prop from Stellenbosch, Reid, scored his second to secure a win for Paul Roos against Paarl Boys’ High in Paarl, a feat that had not been achieved since 2003 when Juandré Kruger and his squad managed to get the better of Boishaai at home.

The home team managed a consolation try by none other than Mars, who was back to his best, looking like he had never missed a game. Their flyhalf, Ruan Von Willing, broke the line and got the ball to his fullback who was never going to be stopped in that much space.

They nearly managed to score another when Divan Fuller (flanker) charged down the line only to be stopped by the Paul Roos captain, Andreas Oosthuizen (flanker) with a huge tackle, exemplifying his heroic performance on the day.

Paul Roos is going from strength to strength this year, and this is, without a doubt, their strongest performance to date and the boys will remember this game for the rest of their lives.

None more so than Christian de Villiers (hooker) who stood out for the Maroon Machine, along with the rest of his forward pack whose work rate was simply unceasing.

The Paarl Boys’ team will have to take this one on the chin and move on, they’ve played some incredible rugby this year, with more games than most of their competitors so far this season, including a thriller last weekend in Wynberg where they ended up winning 33-29 in the last play of the game, but Paul Roos had their number this weekend.

Wynberg Boys’ High had to suffer last-minute heartbreak again this weekend when they left the door open for Rondebosch Boys’ High to steal the win after being ahead 16-8 with only five minutes left to play.

Two late tries by Ryan du Rand (no. 8) and Ethan Gordon (winger) saw the home team through, with Rondebosch winning 20-16 in front of an ecstatic home crowd.

They only scored their first points in the second half, when Juma Amissi (winger) intercepted a Wynberg pass brilliantly to get the hosts on the board after trailing 10-0 at the break.

Diocesan College also managed to add another impressive win to an already successful season, beating Stellenberg 22-7 on the Piley Rees.

It was a closely fought battle throughout the game, with very little separating the teams, before two quick tries in the last five minutes by Hassiem Pead (scrumhalf) and Lucca Mynhardt, who came off the bench, secured a statement victory for the Bishops boys.

Roscoe Julius (flyhalf) was phenomenal for Hottentots Holland Hoërskool against Parel Vallei, scoring 15 of their 20 points as they beat the home team by a single point, 20-19.

SACS could also rely on inspirational play by their captain, Ali Osman-Bosch (prop) who score a hat trick in their 28-10 victory over Hoërskool Bellville.

Charlie Hofmeyr pocketed two big wins this week, coming out on top in the Ceres derby against Ceres Secondary (24-5) on Wednesday before thrashing a visiting Hoërskool Stellenbosch (66-5) on Saturday.

  • Kwaggas on top in annual derby against Oakdale Landbou

Kwaggas on top in annual derby against Oakdale Landbou

Outeniqua had a last chance to flex their muscles on their home field against their old rivals, Oakdale Landbou, before preparations begin to host the 2023 Craven Week during the holiday.

The Kwaggas defeated Oakdale by 25-14.

Watch the game again on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

The home team are experiencing a dream season, they’ve only lost twice, against two of the strongest sides in the country, Grey College (19-17) and Garsfontein (19-8) and 15 Kwagga players have been selected to represent the SWD region at the Craven Week.

They managed to subdue the Oakdale attack throughout most of the game, letting only one try slip early on, and not conceding again until the very end of the game, by which time their victory had been secured.

The home team’s big loosehead, Ruan Swart, crossed the line twice and the other two tries also came from the forward pack, with Jeffwin Wesso (no. 8) and Dewald Gerber (flanker) scoring for Outeniqua.

They have been a team who has stood out for their exciting backline play this season, with players like Andrew Stopforth (flyhalf), Ashwin Damons (winger) and JJ Daters (winger) often spearheading the attack, seeing them switch up their point of attack to adjust for the conditions and their opponents show how professional this team is.

The SWD team will definitely be one to watch this year, judging by the quality of players on show in these two teams this weekend.

For the visitors, it was their goal-kicking no. 8, Erick Steyn, who stood out, but they will have to wait until next year for another chance to better their old rivals on the farm in Riversdale.

Strand achieved a big statement victory against Worcester Gimnasium.

Their centre pair, Gino Cupido and Geranzo Plaatjies managed three tries between them, and flyhalf, Tyron Nicholas‘ aim was steady to secure a one-point advantage over the Gimmies.

This is a great bounce back for the team from Strand after their disappointing loss to Brackenfell (26-18) last weekend, Worcester Gimnasium has been playing exceptional rugby this year, and they are a difficult team to overcome.

Worcester’s hooker and vice-captain, Armand Croeser, scored a hat trick for his side, but it was not enough to topple the home team.

Schoonspruit survived a late fightback by Piketberg in their FNB Classic Clash to win 14-13 in a countryside classic.

Kasselsvlei made use of their forwards in their attack, with their hooker, Ferlin Julies, and no. 8, Lorenzo Rodericks, scoring a brace each in their 25-13 victory over Scottsdene.

Diamantveld t. Duineveld om 12:30 in Kimberley:

Diamantveld: 15 Liam Ferris, 14 Kyle Taute, 13 Valentino Lenge, 12 Simon Liversage, 11 Michael Prinsloo, 10 Marno Greef, 9 Dirk van Heerden, 8 Juandre Stassen, 7 Lehan van der Westhuizen, 6 Achiles de Jager, 5 JJ Fourie, 4 Diwan Muller, 3 Flip du Randt, 2 De Wet du Plooy, 1 FJ de Fries.

Duineveld: 15 Gregon Jansen, 14 Henry Page, 13 Wyndham Bouwer, 12 DJ Wandrag, 11 Shamaro de Klerk, 10 Ethan van Zyl, 9 Franco Erasmus, 8 Wihan Liebenberg, 7 Alek Andianatos, 6 Freddie Collen, 5 Ean le Rich, 4 Arno Luttig, 3 Ethan Prins, 2 Alwyn Wickens, 1 Chris Honiball.

    Noord-Kaap t. Hoërskool Upington om 12:00

Noord-Kaap: 15 Jonaden Links, 14 Junior Kettledas, 13 Kimi van den Horst, 12 Abdul Fischer, 11 Keante Pienaar, 10 Eldridge Jack, 9 Lwandle Maseko, 8 Shaw Lourens, 7 Melvin Diedericks, 6 Tyron China, 5 Thaylin Rose, 4 Wentzel Hibbert, 3 Liyabona Mbeke, 2 Liam Harmse, 1 Eveton Hamat.

  • Boishaai to defend proud record against Paul Roos at Brug Street

Boishaai to defend proud record against Paul Roos at Brug Street

Ruan van Willing of Paarl Boys High PHOTO by Grant Pitcher/Gallo Images

The Buco Brug Street stadium will be hosting one of the biggest schoolboy rugby clashes of the season this weekend when Paul Roos Gimnasium visit from Stellenbosch to take on Paarl Boys’ High at home for their Sportsmans Warehouse Premier Interschools.

The action will be brought to you live by SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

With the rich rugby history between these two schools, this encounter produces one of the highlights of the rugby calendar every year.

Paul Roos can boast of having produced the most Springboks of any school in South Africa, currently at 54 old boys who have represented South Africa on the rugby field, with the most recent being the likes of Herschel Jantjies, Damian Willemse, Steven Kitshoff and Willie le Roux.

Paarl Boys’ High, on the other hand, have been consistently ranking among the top three rugby schools in the country for a long time now, and have also been churning out Springbok stars like Evan Roos, Salmaan Moerat, Thomas du Toit and Frans Malherbe at an increasingly steady rate.

Boishaai have had the upper hand in eight of their last ten encounters, but need only think back to 2018 when a Paul Roos side including the likes of current Currie Cup players Juan Mostert, JJ Kotze and Kade Wolhuter and the Dutchman currently signed at Saracens, Mink Scharink, secured a famous victory in Stellenbosch.

The team from Paarl were celebrating their 150th year and had just come off a winning streak of more than 50 games when they lost, first to the Jaguares from Argentina (19-10), then to Grey College (34-20) before Paul Roos handed them their biggest defeat in a long time (44-8).

To the credit of the 2018 Boishaai team, they managed to regroup and still went on to win the all-important derby against Paarl Gim that year (24-21).

It has, however, been 20 years since Paul Roos last beat Boishaai in Paarl. Juandré Kruger was part of that Paul Roos first team in 2003.

History aside, this weekend will be all about the boys on the field, and the home team can rely on the returning JC Mars at fullback, who has been the in-form player all season.

The home side also replace both props as Christie Visser and Evan Kotze who were in the team that beat Wynberg Boys’ High last weekend, when Lyle Arendse who replaced the injured Mars scored a phenomenal try in the last play of the game to edge a 33-26 victory make way for  Michael Pretorius and Alfie Holm who start in their places on the front line this weekend and Bryan Burger starts at centre in the place of Ayden Jacobs.

They can still rely on the services of Ruan van Willing (flyhalf), Divan Fuller (flanker) and Van Heerden Pretorius (lock) who have been excellent for them this year and the visitors will need to be at their best to avoid a romp in Paarl.

Paul Roos have flown under the radar somewhat so far this year, having played fewer games than their opponents, but they’ve already had success over the likes of Rondebosch (27-7), Affies (31-25) and Durban High School (24-14), only narrowly losing out to Paarl Gimnasium (24-19).

They also came up short against Monument (44-26) earlier in the season at the North/South tournament, but they have progressed substantially throughout the season, with players like Leejay Petersen (flyhalf), Zeke January (scrumhalf) and Ryan Jack (prop) standing out for the Maroon Machine in their last couple of games.

The Paul Roos loose forwards have been exemplary in their work rate so far this season and Reuben Kruger (no. 8) and captain, Andreas Oosthuizen (flanker) will have a big role to play in this game. Riley Norton (flanker) replaces Dylan van Wyk to complete the back row.

The only other change from the Paul Roos team that saw away with Rondebosch last weekend is Declan Croy who starts at fullback, shifting Keenan Stoffels to the wing in the place of Marco Odendaal.

The home team should be the favourites to take this one, but the history of these two schools’ rivalry contains ample examples of how the occasion of such a big match can completely negate form and records.

Some of the other big matchups in the Western Cape over the weekend include Rondebosch Boys’ High versus Wynberg Boys’ High, who are both coming off losses after facing Boishaai and Paul Roos respectively last weekend and will be looking forward to returning to winning ways in their big derby.

Diocesan College also plays host to Stellenberg in Rondebosch. That matchup promises sparks as well, with both teams playing some really exciting rugby so far this season.

    The teams are:

Paarl Boys’ High vs Paul Roos Gimnasium at 14:00:

  • Boishaai and Gim to face Wynberg and SACS this weekend

Paarl Boys’ High host Wynberg Boys’ High at the Brug Street Stadium in Paarl on Saturday at 12:20 as both teams look for a return to winning ways.

The game will be available live on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Boishaai came up short, 39-30, against an unstoppable Grey College team last weekend but have been building good momentum before that game.

They’ve had big wins against Stellenberg (41-29), Helpmekaar (15-10), Glenwood (35-13) and SACS (34-18) with their last loss coming against Oakdale Landbou (20-17) on the farm in Riversdale back in April.

Paarl Boys still have some big challenges that lay ahead this season, including Wynberg this weekend before they play Paul Roos Gimnasium, Rondebosch Boys’ High, Boland Lanbou and Diocesan College but they will already be preparing for the big derby against Paarl Gimnasium at the end of the year.

Their fullback, JC Mars, has impressed all season but is unavailable this weekend.

Boishaai are especially exciting in space, returning kicks, and Wynberg will need to be disciplined in their defence to contain them. Their performance in defence was Wynberg’s silver lining in their 14-10 loss to Diocesan College last weekend.

The visitors had more success before that match though, and their captain, Xola Nyali (prop) has led his team from the front in impressive victories over Grey High School (35-8) and Stellenberg (15-13). Before that, they lost to the neighbouring Paarl Gimnasium (33-11).

Though Wynberg put in a strong showing against Bishops last weekend, one would expect the Boishaai team to have the upper hand on the Hawthorden field on Saturday, but it will be a closely fought battle as it always is when these two meet.

Paarl Gimnasium travel to town to play SACS this weekend.

The hosts will be hoping to repeat their performance of 2017 when they beat Gimmies 22-19, playing at home.

This is a tall ask though, as Paarl Gimnasium has gone from strength to strength this season, their only loss coming against Grey Bloem (33-12) in March.

SACS have had a difficult run of fixtures of late, with this being the most difficult of the lot.

Taazreeq Moerat (fullback) and Danio Botha (lock) are ones to watch on Saturday, but the entire Gimmie squad seems to have gelled and they are working together with ruthless efficiency, spearheaded by their captain and flyhalf, Kyle Smith.

SACS’ flyhalf, Rayaan Solomons has stood out for his team and he will be leading the attack this weekend again.

There is an interesting change in the hometeam’s forward pack as big Khwezi Ndlovu moves from lock to flank, swapping positions with Pierre van Selm.

Ndlovu has been a strong carrier of the ball and destructive in the rucks. He might cause problems for the visitors playing as a loose forward.

    The teams are:

This is a fixture Welkom Gim has dominated in the past, but that has never stopped it from being one of the highlights on the calendar for the Welkom community who are very much split into two camps for this local derby.

Welkom Gim look to continue asserting their dominance to mark their 70th year of existence and look well equipped to do exactly that, as Gimmies have been slicing through the defences of some of the strongest sides in the country this season.

They beat Hoërskool Trio convincingly last weekend, 44-17, and Trio beat Goudveld 29-0 the week before that, so current form bodes ominously for the home team.

But we all know how the passion of a big derby can lift a team, and Welkom Gim will not be underestimating their neighbours at all.

Their flyhalf, Renaldo Kiewiet, has shown how professional and composed he is when directing his troops all season, and this has resulted in some highlight-reel tries for the likes of Naylen Goeda (fullback), Naven Goeda (winger), Kamohelo Mokoena (winger) and Ethan Jones (no. 8).

The Gouties managed to produce some of the attacking play they have been threatening to all season in their 26-3 victory over Hentie Cilliers last weekend and have stuck with their new lineup for this game, where Ruben Crous plays inside centre and Quinton Davids covers flyhalf. They are, however, also bolstered by the return of their fullback Ru-Bran Kock.

They will need to be playing at their absolute best to avoid a Gimmies romp though, as the visiting team’s attack has looked extremely dangerous.

Hoërskool Trio and Witteberg are both coming off losses last weekend, Trio played Welkom Gim and had to bend a knee to the impressive Gimmie side (44-17) and Witteberg played in their big annual derby against Voortrekker and lost 24-16.

Voortrekker are in action again this week in another big interschool clash against Hentie Cilliers.

Douglas also hosts Hopetown for their big derby, while Noord-Kaap look to build on their success from last weekend, when they beat Diamantveld 18-17 in their FNB Classic Clash.
