Luan Giliomee has been earning new fans with every game he plays this season, impressing week after week at the heart of the Charlie Hofmeyr 1st XV.
Just last Saturday, he took centre stage again in Oudtshoorn, with a 21-point haul, as Charlies extended their unbeaten run for the season by beating Langenhoven Gimnasium away from home.
Always humble in victory, Luan credited their success so far this year to their adaptability as a team.
“I think what’s working for us this season is our ability to play the game in front of us,” he said.
“We believe that if we can play to the best of our abilities, we can overcome any challenge.” They have done just that so far this year, maintaining a 100 percent record after some thrilling matchups.
Luan recalled the Oakdale Rugby Week as one of the highlights of Charlies’ already impressive season. “The competition was really tough, and it brought us a lot closer as a team,” he said.
Not only did he and his team keep an unblemished record on the farm in Riversdal, but Luan was selected as the best backline player of the tournament.
Despite their success, Luan says that it is extremely important to them that they keep their feet planted firmly on the ground. He recalled the first Friday the rookies in the 1st XV were allowed to attend school wearing their team kit and how unsure the younger guys were about whether they had earned the privilege yet.
“That really made me realize how humble the guys all are, and we’ll make sure to keep that attitude, even when it’s going well,” he said.
Born and raised in Ceres, he grew up with an older sister, Lané, and younger brother, Ruben, who are just as passionate about sport as he is.
Lané has earned provincial colours for netball and track and was crowned the Western Cape 400m hurdles champion in 2023.
Young Ruben is also an accomplished track athlete and provincial cricketer. He grabbed the imagination of schoolboy rugby fans last year when he scored a sensational try to help Gericke Primary School claim the Marius Schoeman u12 Sevens crown in Paarl.
“They keep me on my toes,” laughed Luan. “We have a healthy competition between us and while we’re always there to support each other, we also try to push one another to the next level.”
Their unbridled love of sport stems from their parents. Dad, Louis, was an accomplished rugby player and still coaches, and mom, Aldihette, excelled in athletics.
“I’ve had a couple of great coaches and mentors over the years, and I am obviously biased, but my dad has played a huge role in my rugby career,” Luan said.
“He is currently our first team coach, along with two other great mentors, coaches Fanna du Toit and Dillan Demas.
“Another person who has taught me a lot, both on and off the field, is coach Mike Barnard, who is the first team cricket coach this year.”
Luan made waves last year when he represented the Boland region and his proud school with distinction at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, where he earned bronze as part of the SA u18 Sevens team.
“It’s a funny story. I almost didn’t go to the trials because I was still quite young, but my dad encouraged me to give it a shot and Mr JR Foreman made sure we got an invitation. I made the Boland team and by the time the tournament came around I had matured a lot physically and ended up making the SA squad.
“I think it just goes to show, you need to grab any opportunity you get with both hands. You never know what could be coming your way.
“It [the Commonwealth Youth Games] was an amazing experience and I made some friends for life and learned a lot.”
Backline player of the tournament at the Klein Karoo Saadproduksie Oakdale Rugby Week: Luan Giliomee, Charlie Hofmeyr
The work he put into sevens and the skills he picked up from top coaches, like Marius Schoeman and Philip Snyman, definitely took Luan’s game to the next level. The Charlie Hofmeyr first team has been unstoppable so far this season, and Luan Giliomee has been instrumental in his role as captain and flyhalf.
His responsibility as the captain is very important to him and it was foremost in his mind when he was asked about his goals for the year. He hoped to lead the team as best he could, Luan said.
“I know I’m not going to make the right decision every time, but I know the guys are always backing me, and I hope to look back at the end of the season and be able to say that I did my best both on and off the field.
“Charlie Hofmeyr is my home away from home, and the team is like a second family. I love them all very much, so I am driven to make them proud.”
While he’s not yet completely settled on where he will be next year, South African rugby fans will be happy to know they’ll still be able to see the exciting young flyer do his thing on the field.
“I’m still figuring it out, and we’re busy putting some plans into place, so I can’t say much, but I definitely want to be playing rugby, and I’ll probably also continue exploring the sevens’ route, wherever I end up going.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to play rugby professionally and I’m a big believer in chasing your dreams.”
Luan’s love for the game became crystal clear when he talked about the players he looks up to.
“As a South African and a flyhalf, it’s probably a bit of a cliché, but Handré Pollard‘s got to be up there. The guy who can’t miss. His ability to influence a game from anywhere is amazing.”
He went on to mention others, like Damian McKenzie, Finn Russell and Manie Libbok, as players who are exciting to watch, have a feel for the game, and have the ability to make others look great. Anyone who’s seen Luan play would agree that he has already exhibited some of those traits he admires in the pros.
With a contagious energy and a deeply rooted love for the sport, the future is wide open for whatever the Boland’s budding young star chooses to do with it, but there’s a definite sense that it might involve the oval ball.
“I’m extremely privileged to be where I am, spending time with a group of people who mean a lot to me, doing the thing we all love doing most. I’m extremely appreciative and I try to always remember that, so there’s no stress or pressure. I’m just enjoying it,” he said
“I’ve heard from so many people say how they wish they could play one more game, or how it’s never the same after school. So, I’m really just taking in every moment and enjoying it as much as I can.”

Hoërskool Brackenfell played their hearts out in Somerset West to beat Parel Vallei in their own backyard on Saturday.
The first 35 minutes saw both teams put up a great fight. The visitors scored first to take the lead, but for the rest of the half, the PV boys kept piling on the pressure.
Renato Tosi, the home team’s no. 8 carried the ball well and got his team into good positions on the field, but the Brakkies’ defence stood firm and forced the hosts to take the points on offer, with two penalty conversions by Shudley Rhoda and Luchen Meyer respectively.
Flyhalf Junior Louw impressed for Brackenfell again, and his replacement, Alldrick Johnson, didn’t take his foot off the gas for a moment when he came on.
Tries by Dawson Lombard, Cwenga Ntsapho, Siraaj Cook and Johnson enabled the Brakkies to outscore the Bulldogs 29-16, but the home crowd was entertained to the very end, with Paarl Vallei’s athletic winger Iviwe Majingo scoring a stunning try to get them to within two scores.
This weekend, Brackenfell hosts Strand while the Parel Vallei boys gear up for an imposing challenge away at the marauding Milnerton.
The Hoërskool Tygerberg Tigers had their claws removed this weekend when they visited the Millies, going down by a whopping 14-82.
Milnerton’s speedster on the wing, Keagan Wood, ran in four tries, while captain Frank Hitimana veteran scrumhalf, Devon Damons, grabbed a hattrick each.
Meanwhile, Hugenote continued their impressive run of form, scoring 48 unanswered points against Hermanus.
Keenen Johnson (winger) and Xavier Fredericks (outside centre) each dotted down twice as Hugenote ran in eight tries without conceding any points.
In Oudtshoorn, Luan Giliomee scored 21 points for Charlie Hofmeyr as they kept their perfect record alive, beating Langenhoven Gimnasium 46-31
With a squad full of dangermen, who seem to find their way onto the scoresheet every weekend, Charlies appear well set to continue their winning run throughout the rest of the season.
The clash between Montagu and Hoërskool Punt from Mossel Bay produced one of the highlights of the weekend, climaxing with a last-minute try, which levelled the scores at 29-29. The match was poised on a knife’s edge throughout.
With only 15 minutes left in the game, the visitors from the Garden Route pulled away, scoring two quickfire tries to gain a 29-17 advantage. The home team’s playmaker, Ronaldo Koker, however, pulled off an incredible solo effort in the final moments to score his second try of the day from the halfway line. But, with the conversion going wide, they had to settle for a draw.
The visitors’ fullback Gabriel Hinkman stood out as the last bastion of defence, and for driving the attack forward with his educated boot, while scrummy Udo Windvogel impressed for Montagu, keeping up the tempo with his work rate at the breakdown points.
Charlie Hofmeyr 46 – Tries: Philip du Plessis, Luan Giliomee, Le Roux Groenewald, Izha-Vin van Wyk, Glennwill Tromp, Duran Shiba. Conversions: Giliomee (5). Penalties: Giliomee (2). Langenhoven Gimnasium 31.

Grey High avenged their shock defeat to Graeme College last year when they beat their old rivals by 29-7 in front of a lively assembly of supporters on the Kolisi Field on Saturday to close out the Standard Bank Grey High Rugby Festival in style.
Jon Hobson was instrumental in their 33-15 victory over St John’s College on the opening day, scoring twice to help his side build valuable momentum ahead of Saturday’s grudge match.
For the festival’s final game, he was moved back to hooker, but his immense contribution was undiminished. In fact, he crossed the Graeme try line four times behind the powerful Grey rolling maul.
Graeme saved face through a try by Lebo Mahasele in the second half, but they were outgunned from the start as Hobson and his teammates decidedly put last year’s loss behind them.
Grey dominated the lineouts and kept their discipline to open up a healthy 19-0 lead at the break, which they were able to defend in the second half.
Westville Boys’ High completely outgunned Dale College, beating the team from Qonce 52-12.
The Griffin dominated from the off and sped to a 40-7 lead by half-time.
With their captain, Chris Cloete, spearheading the attack with three tries and vice-captain, Unathi Mlotshwa, contributing 17 points with a try and six conversions, Westville were never in trouble despite Dale’s fighting spirit.
The Western Cape representatives, Hoërskool Durbanville, ended their tour on a high with an impressive victory over Queen’s College.
Tobie Roelofse was instrumental for the Durbies, striking off the kicking tee for eight vital points.
Roelofse’s penalty conversion early on, to open the scoring, would end up being the difference as the Capetonians outscored Queen’s 25-22.
The Eastern Cape outfit’s scrumhalf, Ryan Denston, starred for his side, also kicking well off the tee.
There was plenty of excitement provided by the wings, with Jameel Fleshman striking twice for Queen’s and Dale Martin doing the same for Durbanville.
Westville Boys’ High 52 (40) – Tries: Chris Cloete (3), Michael Sadate, Unathi Mlotshwa, Jadrian Afrikaner, Blake Allbon, Zekhethelo Siyaya. Conversions: Mlotshwa (6). Dale College 12 (7) – Tries: Singatha Rasi, Qhawe Mtati. Conversion: Phikolomzi Mtyalela.

Rondebosch Boys’ High outplayed an unbeaten Wynberg Boys’ High side on the Hawthornden Field on Saturday to emerge as the new front runners among the southern suburb schools.
The ‘Bosch boys made use of the full width of the field, with both wingers crossing for doubles as they upset the home team 49-27.
David Kadima scored his first within three minutes of the kick-off, then got the scoreboard moving again after the break.
Shakeel Abrahams scored their second and third to drive Rondebosch to a commanding 23-8 lead at half-time.
Wynberg, spurred on by their captain, Aden da Costa‘s sole try in the first half, fought hard to make the second stanza more of a battle, but ‘Bosch continued finding gaps and stacking up a substantial total.
The visitors’ backline ran like a well-oiled machine, with David Simon and Caleb Belelie steering the ship.
Simon added 14 points off the kicking tee, and Dylan Miller, Randall-John Davids and Matthew van der Merwe broke through the Wynberg defence to help bring Wynberg’s unbeaten streak to an end.
As they had done last weekend at Paarl Gimnasium, SACS stormed out of the blocks against Bishops Diocesan College on the Memorial Field. – link to the game
Two tries by the industrious flanker, Tashriq Bailey, and another by Endi Sidinile, on the wing, drove the hosts to a 22-0 lead by halftime.
The Bishops’ boys fought back hard after the break and, in a much tighter second half, both teams added only seven points each. But the damage had been done in the first half and the home crowd was able to enjoy an impressive win after seeing their team fall victim to Paarl Gim last week.

Die Robbies se volgende groot uitdaging volg eerskomende Saterdag wanneer Worcester Gimnasium by hulle besoek aflê.

Gqeberha – Jeppe High School for Boys flexed their muscles on the final day of The Grey Standard Bank Rugby Festival.
Winger Leruo Dithagiso spearheaded the Johannesburg outfit’s attack, unlocking the St Andrew’s defence twice, as they recorded their second victory of the week.
Jeppe beat Graeme College 29-3 on the opening day and backed up that performance by outscoring St Andrew’s College 33-5 on Saturday.
Matthew Coetzee stood out at flyhalf, crossing the try line for a five-pointer, too, and sending Dithagiso over for his second with a magnificent little pop to the inside.
Jeppe’s other tries were scored by their captain, Khuthadzo Rasivhaga, and Bonga Nxumalo, while Coetzee punished the team from Makhanda with his accuracy off the kicking tee.
It’s been a mixed season for the Jeppe boys so far, with some magnificent highs and one or two lows, but they’ve shown their class throughout and continue to impress week after week.
St Andrew’s fought back hard in the second half, spurred on by the efforts of their courageous captain, Joe Wostenholm.
Some big hits by the Jeppe boys inside their danger area were enough to keep Saints out for the most part, however, and they return home with two very impressive wins added to their 2024 record.
Earlier in the day, St Charles College opened proceedings with a comprehensive 26-5 victory over Hudson Park.
The big lock, Raphael Ajibade, made his presence felt for the KZN squad with some powerful charges forward and Salmaan Mohammed stood out in the no. 15 jersey.
Outside centre, Jacqyl Wright, scored a beautiful try to open the account for the boys from Buffalo City, but that was all they could muster.

Brandwag found their rhythm late in their match against St Stithians, outscoring the Gauteng outfit 12-10 in the second stanza, thanks to scintillating scores by Keenan Kayster and Enzo Ketchim.
Saints, however, kept their cool and tries by captain Gabriel Hore and their big second rower, Keabetswe Mapukana, along with two three-pointers by their star winger, Joshua Meyer, secured the win.
