  • Rivalry between Grey College and Affies celebrate 100 years

Rivalry between Grey College and Affies celebrate 100 years

    PHOTO: Marnus van Wyk/Grey College

The rivalry between Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and Grey College continues as strong as ever, 100 years since the prestigious sides first met.

They face each other at 14:00 on Saturday, 20th of May, in Bloemfontein for the 46th time since their first match in Pretoria on the 29th of September 1923.

This FNB Classic Clash will be available live on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Grey won that first encounter 7-0, and have won the majority of the meetings since then, but Affies need to look back only as far as 2015 when an Affies first team including then Springbok coach, Heyneke Meyer’s son, Vic Meyer, came to Bloemfontein and beat the hosts 29-18.

It will take an inspired performance by the boys from Pretoria though, as Grey College have been consistently beating the best teams in South Africa all season, and it does not look like any opponents have the answers to the questions players like Vincent Wolhuter (fullback), Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf) and Benito Goeda (centre) have been asking on attack.

The real differential for the Bloemfontein powerhouse has been the exceptional work rate of their forward pack though, with Jean Erasmus (prop) and the loose trio of Jean-Henri Smit, Keegan Scholtz and captain, JJ Theron being central to their play every weekend.

Though the visitors are coming off a good win last weekend, when they beat King Edward VII 43-20, they have had a difficult run of fixtures so far and will be aware of how much a win in Bloemfontein will affect the outlook on their season.

The Grey side remains unchanged from the team that beat an in-form Paarl Boys’ High in Paarl last weekend, and they are clearly firing on all cylinders.

Affies’ fullback, Migael de Lange, has stood out for his team and will need to be on top of his game again as Van der Merwe is sure to continue using his kicking play that has served his side so well this season.

Steyn Truter, the big loosehead from Pretoria has also looked strong, but it will take a huge effort from him and his pack to outmuscle the Grey forwards on their home turf, they have not given an inch to any team this season so far.

A rivalry with a history as rich as this never disappoints, and though Grey are the definite favourites at home, Affies are sure to push them to the absolute limit again.

    The teams are:

Grey College vs Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool at 14:00

Grey College: 15 Vincent Wolhuter, 14 Hayden Tolmay, 13 Benito Goeda, 12 Pieter van der Merwe, 11 Martin Botha, 10 Ian van der Merwe, 9 Christiaan van der Westhuizen, 8 JJ Theron, 7 Keegan Scholtz, 6 Jean-Henri Smit, 5 Schalk du Plessis, 4 Heinrich Theron, 3 Jean Erasmus, 2 Liam van Wyk, 1 Ranon Fouche.

Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool: 15 Migael de Lange, 14 Stephan Brits, 13 Antonie Fourie, 12 Janco Purchase, 11 Ivandre van Wyk, 10 Ruben Pienaar, 9 Hendre Schoeman, 8 Dieter Schubert, 7 Ruan Lippoldt, 6 Braam Swanepoel, 5 JD Hattingh, 4 Jono Eloff, 3 Ruan Smuts, 2 Ethan van Dyk, 1 Steyn Truter.

  • Diamantveld betree besige periode met eerste hekkie Saterdag teen JF

Diamantveld betree besige periode met eerste hekkie Saterdag teen JF

    FOTO: Marnus Prinsloo

Diamantveld t. Jim Fouché om 13:00

Diamantveld: 15 Liam Ferris, 14 Kyle Taute, 13 Valentino Lenge, 12 Simon Liversage, 11 Lehan van der Westhuizen, 10 Marco Matthewson, 9 Ethan Marnus, 8 Paul Cronje, 7 Juandre Stassen, 6 Achilles de Jager, 5 JJ Fourie, 4 Diwan Muller, 3 Flip du Randt, 2 De Wet du Plooy, 1 FJ de Fries.

Jim Fouché: 15 Christian Strydom, 14 Altus du Plessis, 13 Wiandro Wiese, 12 Heinrich Hattingh, 11 Dillon Calitz, 10 Hanko Botha, 9 Triston van der Walt, 8 Calvin Bolt, 7 CJ Raath, 6 Ruan Heymans, 5 SW van der Merwe, 4 Stefan van Rooyen, 3 Stean Marais, 2 Stefan Venter, 1 Bernard Labuschagne.

Fichardtpark t. HTS Louis Botha om 12:20

Fichardtpark: 15 Martin Kalp, 14 Edward Mpinga, 13 Duan Viviers, 12 Dandré van der Merwe, 11 Janco Mollentze, 10 Dailen Geldenhuys, 9 Devanté Claassen, 8 Erick Klopper, 7 Wian Pienaar, 6 Jan-Nel du Plessis, 5 Nathan Dodd, 4 Jaco Grobbelaar, 3 Nathan Swanepoel, 2 Luhan du Plessis, 1 Zaine van Zyl.

HTS Louis Botha: 15 Kutlo Seyoko, 14 Phumelela Banti, 13 Phiwe Mkunjana, 12 Phelile Katse, 11 Babongkile Mafantere, 10 Sipho Dzingwa, 9 Oratile Maphile, 8 Kwanda Tokwe, 7 Mogomotsi Mokunyane, 6 Neo Mothibeli, 5 Ofentse Tholometsi, 4 Sakhekile Mzamo, 3 Daniel Tijmbundi, 2 Indiphile Mabilwana, 1 Tshiamo Senoamadi.

  • Trekkers bobaas in Bethlehem se FNB Classic Clash

    FOTO: Charmaine Sander Photography

Paarl Gimnasium 36 (17) – Drieë: Tazreeq Moerat, Freek de Kock, Louw du Toit, Marco Steyn, Danio Botha, Jan Koegelenberg. Doelskoppe: De Kock (3). Boland Landbou 18 (3) – Drieë: Cilliers Viljoen, Alru Gous, Dewald de Villiers. Strafdoel: Retagen van Rooi.

Strand 34 (0) – Drieë: Gino Cupido (2), PJ van der Schyff, Juhaim Abels, Wikus Meyer, Leighton Fisher. Doelskoppe: Tyron Nicholas (2). DF Malan 27 (22) – Drieë: Zander Enslin (3), Liam Greeff. Doelskoppe: Enslin (2). Strafdoel: Enslin.

Charlie Hofmeyr 17 – Drieë: Johann Coetzee, Lawrence Jantjies. Doelskoppe: Luan Giliomee (2). Strafdoel: Giliomee. Oakdale Landbou II 18 – Drieë: Michael Fourie, Gustav van der Merwe. Doelskop: Duraan Janse van Rensburg. Strafdoele: Janse van Rensburg (2).

  • Kimberley is green for another year as Northerns defeat Diamonds

Kimberley is green for another year as Northerns defeat Diamonds

    FOTO: Marnus Prinsloo

Hoërskool Noord-Kaap claim the bragging rights in Kimberley for the year, beating their neighbours, Diamantveld, 18-17 in a dramatic battle, decided by a last-second penalty conversion.

You can watch the game again on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Kimi van den Horst, the Northerns’ centre opened the scoring on Pirates, slicing through the Diamonds’ defence and stating the home team’s intent within the first ten minutes.

The visitors, however, had their own agenda and two tries by Liam Ferris (fullback) and Simon Liversage (centre) gave them the lead,

Ferris showed immense pace to get to a kick forward by his scrumhalf, Dirk van Heerden, before anyone else.

Then Liversage received the ball on the blindside after a good, dominant scrum by his forwards and rounded off the try in the corner.

That said, the Northerns pack did extremely well to match the big Diamantveld boys at the set pieces. Moeketsi Lang came off the bench in the first half and did not give an inch to his opposite number, the big prop, Flip du Randt.

Northern Cape showed great character to claw one back before halftime, even after being reduced to 14 men with a yellow card.

None other than Junior Kettledas, the winger who has been so threatening with ball in hand all season, finished off a try in the corner after a period of tireless attack by his team, during which it seemed like every Noord-Kaap player carried the ball at least once.

After 20 minutes of trading blows in the second half, during which time neither team could get past their opponents, Noord-Kaap took the lead once more.

Their scrumhalf, Lwandle Maseko, was awake to an opportunity, seeing that the Diamantveld defence were a bit slow to organize themselves he took a quick tap, deep in his own half and spread the ball wide to their winger, Keante Pienaar, who left the Diamonds defenders grasping at air as he bolted away along the touchline to score.

It looked like the visitors had stolen it with only four minutes left on the clock, when Liversage made another excellent break and managed to get the ball out to his other centre, Valentino Lenge, who is no stranger to the scoresheet himself, to score the try that regained the lead.

With only about two minutes left to play after the conversion attempt, it looked like Diamantveld might have stolen an epic victory, but the home team were still not done.

Spurred on by the supporters, wave after wave of Noord-Kaap attack after the kickoff led to a penalty being awarded with only a minute left in the game.

Eldrigde Jack (flyhalf) showed absolutely world-class composure to step up and convert the long-range penalty in the dying moments of the big match, after not being able to convert any of the tries earlier.

He shook off any pressure he might be feeling and converted the winning penalty, securing a famous victory for his side.

Welkom Gimnasium continued their impressive run of form at home, comprehensively beating the visiting Hoërskool Trio by 44-17.

The Gimmies’ backline has been a thing of beauty this year, and they have been providing some of the most spectacular tries every weekend.

A team that is made for the highlight reels with their scintillating tries and extravagant celebrations, the boys from Welkom have outplayed many of their opponents thus far this season.

St. Anne’s Technical from Saaiplaas in Virginia managed their first win in their debut season, seeing away with Virginia High 42-0.

The team has shown great improvement since they first stepped onto the field at the Fichardtpark Nashua Sports Day early in March,

    The scorers:

Noord-Kaap 18 (10) – Tries: Keante Pienaar, Kimi van den Horst, Junior Kettledas. Penalty: Eldrige Jack. Diamantveld 17 (12) – Tries: Liam Ferris, Simon Liversage, Valentino Lenge. Conversion: Marco Matthewson.

Welkom Gimnasium 44 (18) – Tries: Julian Samuels, Renaldo Kiewiet, Ethan Jones, Hloni Mokotjo, Navan Goeda, Tristan Appollis, Taschon Meas. Doelskoppe: Kiewiet (3). Strafdoel: Kiewiet. Hoërskool Trio 17 (0) – Tries: Heinrich Loubser (2), Kabeya Haaron. Conversion: Louis Boshoff.

Goudveld-Hoërskool 26 – Tries: Lodie van Dyk, Jan Coetzee, Juanricht Cloete, Jonathan Olivier. Conversions: Ruben Crous (3). Hentie Cilliers 3 – Penalty: Paseka Mokoena.

  • JF on top in FNB Classic Clash againt Tralies

JF on top in FNB Classic Clash againt Tralies

NewsG JimFoucheJim Fouché ultimately managed a comfortable 38-17 victory over Sentraal in their FNB Classic Clash after their neighbours gave them a couple of scares early on.

The game is available to watch again on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

The first half was a tightly contested affair, as the home team only managed to break through the Tralie defence once, when their big loosehead, Bernard Labuschagne, powered over for the opening try.

Sentraal were resolute in defence, even though JF enjoyed much of the possession early on and when their captain and centre, Hanco Smith, scored just before half-time, it looked as if the Tralies might have something up their sleeve for the big derby.

The home team regained control in the second half, scoring five more to pull away and secure the win.

CJ Raath, Jim Fouché’s impressive flanker, powered through the tacklers, stretched to score and began building a lead for the home team again.

Sentraal struck back again though, through none other than the returning AJ Senekal, their prop who had been a standout player for them before his injury a few weeks ago.

After that however, JF opened up the flood gates and Hanko Botha (flyhalf), Triston van der Walt (scrumhalf), Calvin Bolt (nr. 8) and of course, their captain and try-scoring machine, Stefan Venter (hooker), all managed to cross the line and take the game out of reach of the challengers.

Venter had a great game again, and Van der Walt was a menace around the rucks and was kicking well on the day.

Were it not for a lengthy stop in play as a couple of injuries were rightly attended to, the score line may have been a bit nastier, as the Sentraal boys seemed to have their wind knocked out of them by the JF onslaught in the second half.

Fichardtpark extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games this season in a thriller against Landboudal of Jacobsdal.

The Lanties were in it to the very end, with only two points separating them from the Fichie Lions when the final whistle blew.

The accuracy of Dailen Geldenhuys, the Fichardpark flyhalf, who expertly converted all three tries, made the difference in the end.

Luhan du Plessis (hooker) who replaced Jaco Janse van Rensburg in the starting lineup for this game played exceptionally and scored a brace for the team from Bloemfontein.

In Reddersburg, Sterling Batties, the centre, scored 16 points for Hendrik Potgieter in their 46-10 victory over Sand du Plessis.

Batties scored two tries and kicked three conversions to help his team in the main event of the day’s activities.

Brandfort got their revenge against Bloemfontein High, beating the visitors 61-12.

Last year, Bloemfontein HS beat Brandfort 24-21 for the first time ever, and the hosts were not about to allow a repeat of that incident.

For Bloem High, Duan Visagie (hooker) carried the ball strongly and managed their lineouts well and Caydon Ontong looked dangerous with the ball in hand and was solid in defence.

Brandforts big no. 8, Wehan Strydom, seemed unstoppable though and scored four tries.

JC Venter (lock) and Altus Coetzee (scrumhalf) also scored a brace each, taking the game out of reach of the visitors.

For the home team, it was the flyhalf, Henré Smith, who stood out, along with his big forwards, Strydom and Venter.

    The scorers:

Jim Fouché 38 (7) – Tries: Bernard Labuschagne, CJ Raath, Hanko Botha, Triston van der Walt, Stefan Venter, Calvin Bolt. Conversions: Van der Walt (4). Sentraal 17 (5) – Tries: Hanco Smith, AJ Senekal, Damian van Zyl. Conversion: Reece van Rooyen.

Fichardtpark 21 – Tries: Luhan du Plesis (2), Janco Mollentze. Conversions: Dailen Geldenhuys (3). Lanboudal 19 – Tries: Barry Pretorius, Vuyani Moore, Marius Etzebeth. Conversions: Moore (2).

St Andrews 10 – Tries: Imani Kioko, Koena Ntsamai. Cornwall Hill College 44.

Brandfort 61 (35) – Tries: Wehan Strydom (4), JC Venter (2), Altus Coetzee (2), Cor Louwrens. Doelskoppe: Henre Smith (8). Hoërskool Bloemfontein 12 (7) – Tries: Kenslyn Collins, Caydon Ontong. Conversion: Waylon Cedras.

Hendrik Potgieter 46 – Drieë: Sterling Batties (2), Denver Jacobs (2), Attie Melato, Jandré van Niekerk, JW Mortlock, Cedric Booysen. Doelskoppe: Batties (3) Sand du Plessis 10 – Tries: Tiaan Opperman, Nelson Makabane.

  • Bishops bag first victory over Wynberg since 2019

Bishops bag first victory over Wynberg since 2019

Revenge was sweet as Diocesan College handed their long-time rivals, Wynberg Boys’ High, a 14-10 defeat in their own backyard on Saturday.

Wynberg have had the upper hand in this fixture for the last few years but the Bishops boys got one back for the first time since 2019.

You could sense the tension on the field and between the supporters, as the crowds traded chants while the players traded blows in a game that was loud, physical and contested till the end, a Southern Suburbs derby at its finest.

Wynberg opened the books with a penalty by their stoic flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed, on the 15-minute mark.

His opposite number, Shaywan Blankenberg, took a big knock shortly after, despite being down for some time, after the medical staff had cleared him to continue he did well to recover and power on, continuing to play a central role for his team.

Bishops scored the first try when fullback, Gilermo Mentoe, wriggled through the smallest of gaps and outpaced everyone to take the lead for the visitors with eight minutes left in the first half.

To their credit, Wynberg never dropped their heads and kept asking questions of the Bishops defence, who remained resolute until the final minute in the half, when Amier Adams (centre) was rewarded after several phases of play.

The hosts went into the break up by 10-7.

The second half brought more of the same, with every powerful carry being met by equally impressive hits in defence.

Bishops showed that they can also build phases, and after their forward pack had softened the defence their industrious scrumhalf, Kashief Joseph saw an opportunity to dart around the ruck and score the only try of the second half.

Despite being a low-scoring game it was packed with action and exciting to the very end.

Up the road, Rondebosch Boys’ High also handed a home defeat to SACS (22-7).

Rondebosch controlled the game throughout, with their forward pack running the show.

Collin Paul Kemp (flanker), Carl Geddie (lock) and Justin Amos (prop) scored their three tries, highlighting how involved the big boys were in the attack.

Hoërskool Durbanville scored 77 unanswered points in another victory for the travelling teams this weekend when they visited Parel Vallei in Somerset West.

The Durbies backline put in the performance that they have been threatening to all season, scoring 11 tries, with Monray Daars  (scrumhalf) converting nine of them and Shaun Klein (flyhalf) kicking over the other two as well.

Worcester Gimnasium had joy at home though as they beat the visiting Bellville High School 30-19.

This comes shortly after they also came out on top in the clash against Worcester Secondary (29-19) on Wednesday.

Gimmies have been punching above their weight class all season and are an exciting team to keep an eye on for the future.

  • Jim Fouché favourites in Classic Clash against Tralies

Jim Fouché favourites in Classic Clash against Tralies

The Bloemfontein schools are all in action on the rugby field this weekend.

Sentraal face another big challenge as they take on their neighbours, Jim Fouché, for their annual FNB Classic Clash on Saturday at 14:20.

The game will be available live on SuperSport Schools Register now

The Tralies were involved in another big derby only last weekend when they lost to Fichardtpark 33-7.

They take on their other big rivals in the City of Roses this weekend when they make the short trip to Jim Fouché.

JF have had quite an impressive season thus far and will look forward to asserting their dominance over a Sentraal team who have been struggling to realize their potential this year.

JF lost to Fichardtpark by 39-33 in a titanic battle when those two met but managed big wins over the likes of Goudveld (24-21), Bethlehem Voortrekker (36-24) and most recently Randburg (40-31).

Their captain and talisman, Stefan Venter, has been phenomenal for his side, scoring many of their tries himself and managing the lineouts expertly, he slots into his natural hooker position as JF is bolstered by the return of their flanker Ruan Heymans

The Jim Fouché scrumhalf, Tristan van der Walt, has also more than proved his worth, distributing the ball well and taking on the conversion duties for his team.

Wiandro Wiese starts at centre and will cherish the opportunity to claim the position as his own.

Sentraal have been relying on their big forwards to carry the ball, with the Marnus Earle (hooker), Van Zyl Hetzel (prop) and AJ Senekal (prop) making most of the metres for the Tralies so far this season.

They were without the services of Senekal for their fixture against Fichardtpark and the burly tighthead’s absence was evident on the field, they have to make do without him again this weekend.

Fichardtpark are also in action, travelling to the west to Jacobsdal to play Landboudal.

The Fichie Lions are on an incredible 11-match unbeaten streak this season and will look to keep building momentum with another big win against the Lanties.

Landboudal will need to regroup after suffering a heavy 70-12 defeat against Marlow at the GWK Agri-schools Fest, but they have also shown what they are capable of with strong performances to beat Goudveld (25-22) and Sentraal (43-22) earlier in the season.

Fichardtpark are still without their star winger, Edward Mpinga, whose season has been interrupted by injury after he got off to a flying start. Rubin Visagie will look to make his mark as he gets the opportunity to start in place of Mpinga.

The team from Bloem are also without their stalwart hooker, Jaco Janse van Rensburg. He is replaced by Luhan du Plessis.

They can still rely on some of their other big playmakers like Devante Claassen (scrumhalf) and Dailen Geldenhuys (flyhalf) who have played very well this year and are definitely in with a shot at making the Craven week squad if they continue performing at their current level.

Saint Andrew’s welcomes Cornwall Hill College from Centurion for their big annual derby.

When these two met last year in Gauteng, Cornwall Hill College emerged victorious, beating the Bloemfontein side 26-0.

Saints will want to set the record straight on their home turf.

Bloemfontein High and Sand du Plessis both travel for their games on Saturday.

Bloemfontein High face Brandfort, who managed a convincing 31-7 victory over President Steyn last weekend and will hope to build on that momentum.

Sannies travel to Reddersburg to play Hendrik Potgieter in what is bound to be an exciting battle between the structured attacking play of the Hendrik Potgieter forward-pack and the backline flair of Sand du Plessis.

  • Bishops searching for first victory over Wynberg since 2019

Bishops searching for first victory over Wynberg since 2019

Last year’s meeting between Wynberg Boys’ High and Diocesan College was shrouded in controversy.

As what might have begun as banter between the two schools’ supporters and pupils boiled over after Wynberg managed to bring the team from Rondebosch’s impressive winning streak to an end, beating them 20-14.

This year, the teams face each other in Wynberg, on Saturday  at 12:20.

Both teams are on a good run of form, with Wynberg winning six of their seven games so far this season, their only loss coming against Paarl Gimnasium (33-11).

Bishops have also managed to go five from six, their only defeat came when they hosted Paul Roos Gimnasium (24-12).

With both teams playing some exciting rugby this year, and the added animosity between the two sides after last year’s drama, this is set to be an intense battle.

Bishops have just managed a historic victory against SACS last weekend, on the 150th anniversary of the oldest rivalry in South African rugby.

It will be interesting to see if they are inspired by their 31-25 win over their old foes, or if that battle has drained their energy somewhat.

It’s forecast to be another stormy weekend in the Cape, but one would expect both flyhalves to be adept at playing in these conditions.

Just five kilometres up the road another big clash will be taking place as SACS and Rondebosch Boys’ High square off at the foot of Table Mountain on the SACS fields where oldboy Percy Montgomery would have been practising his kicking in the afternoons when he attended the prestigious school.

The home team will be looking to bounce back after their heartbreaking loss to their oldest rivals last week.

Rondebosch have been a difficult fixture for all their opponents so far this year, losing only to an in-form Durbanville High (35-19) and drawing against Grey High School (19-all).

They will look to continue causing problems through their backline, allowing the likes of Matthew Malherbe (centre) and Ethan Gordon (winger) to score some more exciting tries, as they have been doing all season.

Durbanville High School have been playing exceptionally this year. James Nero (centre) and Jayden Nell (no. 8) have stood out as the Durbies have knocked over some big teams, most notably when they beat Paarl Boys’ High 26-25 in March.

They travel to Somerset West to meet Parel Vallei on Saturday.

Parel Vallei played well to get a draw against Frikkie Meyer on the final day of the Rolyn Bergsig tournament in Rustenburg recently, but they will need to raise their game considerably to survive the Durbies’ onslaught in their match on Saturday.

There is action to the East as well, with Montagu making the drive to face Point High School in Mossel Bay and Worcester Gim hosting Bellville High School.

    The teams are:

Wynberg Boys’ High vs Bishops at 12:20:

Wynberg Boys’ High: 15 Xolela Hoyi, 14 Matteo Pascoe, 13 Ezra Antonio, 12 Amier Adams, 11 Levi Brown, 10 Yaqeen Ahmed, 9 Sange Mbuto, 8 Xola Nyali, 7 Aden de Costa, 6 Jarryd Jackson, 5 Michail Kasfikis, 4 Monty Loggeenberg, 3 Leo Addinal, 2 Nicholas van Schalkwyk, 1 Aidan Reid.

Diocesan College: 15 Gilermo Mentoe, 14 Ayanda Bonoyi, 13 Olo Sopotela, 12 Nic Allison, 11 Lucca Mynhardt, 10 Shaywan Blanckenberg, 9 Haashim Pead, 8 Aidan Norris, 7 Christian Steward, 6 Tapiwa Nkumanda, 5 Zach Willemse, 4 CJ Gordon, 3 Nashe Chahwahwa, 2 Merlin Fransman, 1 Richard Horton.

Rondebosch Boys’ High: 15 David Simon, 14 Juma Amissi, 13 Juandre Welthagen, 12 Matthew Malherbe, 11 Ethan Gordon, 10 Dylan Miller, 9 Cameron Whitson, 8 Ryan du Rand, 7 Collin Paul Kemp, 6 Polite Phiri, 5 Tom Barnard, 4 Carl Geddie, 3 Cole Macdonald, 2 Tom van Wyk, 1 Justin Amos.

    Parel Vallei vs Durbanville:

Parel Vallei: 15 Nathaniel Oktober, 14 Zion Tyman, 13 Bongi Bawuti, 12 Bevan Meiring, 11 Caleb Maasdorp, 10 Leighton Brinkhuis, 9 James Kent, 8 Nissi Mugada, 7 Anithan Claassen, 6 Dylan Cockroft, 5 Believe Mwabi, 4 Chandan Nieuwoudt, 3 Christiaan Uitenweerde, 2 Adriaan Stevens, 1 Orin Adams.

Hoërskool Noord-Kaap and Diamantveld battle it out this weekend for bragging rights in Kimberley when they meet for their FNB Classic Clash on Saturday at 13:30 on Pirates.

The game will be available live on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Diamantveld have had the upper hand in this fixture historically, winning three of their four encounters since 2018.

Northern Cape, however, will look to repeat the success of the last time they met on their home turf in 2021, when they beat the Diamonds 29-17.

The home team started their season exceptionally well, managing a few big wins early on in the season over the likes of Sentraal (43-0), Landboudal (26-5) and Milnerton (38-24).

They have had a run of defeats against some strong opponents since then though, most recently at the Menlo Rugby Tournament where they lost to both Menlopark (22-5) and Waterkloof (39-19) and they will need to return to the form they showed earlier in the season for their big derby.

Diamantveld hosted the annual Absa Wildeklawer Tournament during that time, where they also lost both their games against Boland Landbou (27-5) and HTS Drostdy (15-13).

With both teams desperate to add more success to what has been a mixed season so far with a big derby win, this match is bound to be an epic battle.

Diamantveld have been relying on the power of their forwards so far this season, with players like their big lock and captain, JJ Fourie, in their pack who can throw his weight behind the Diamonds’ drive and Marco Mathewson, their flyhalf, who has shown how punishing he can be off the kicking tee.

In contrast, their neighbours, Noord-Kaap, have employed a high-pace running brand of rugby which has led to some spectacular tries through the likes of Jonaden Links, their fullback, and their captain and flyhalf, Eldridge Jack.

The outcome of this match is sure to go a long way towards determining the success of either team’s season, and the boys will be pumped to crown themselves as top dogs in Kimberley.

Hoërskool Trio also travel to Welkom to face a Welkom Gim team who have been at the top of their game this season.

Expectations are high for the team from Kroonstad as they had a dream debut season in 2022, managing to win both the Griffon League and the Kovsie League’s Shimla final on their first time of asking.

The Trio team overcame all odds to beat Bethlehem Voortrekker by 21-14 for the title of Griffons League champs and showed their evolution as the season progressed to also beat Jim Fouché in the Kovsie League Shimla final by 21-19 after losing to the Bloemfontein side 20-3 in their first game ever at the beginning of the season.

When they met the Gimmies for the first time last year, they lost with the narrowest of margins 35-32, but this is a brand new season and Welkom Gim have looked very impressive on their campaign thus far.

Naylen Goeda (fullback), Naven Goeda (winger) and Renaldo Kiewiet (flyhalf) have been exceptional for the Gimmies this year and Ethan Jones (no. 8) has recently been included in the SA u18 Sevens training squad, with a chance to make the team to represent SA at the Commonwealth Youth Games in August in Trinidad and Tobago.

The home team have looked especially dangerous in Welkom, and Trio will have to be awake on defence to keep out the Gimmies’ dangermen.

Goudveld host Hentie Cilliers from Virginia in Welkom.

The Gouties have had to shuffle their pack for this fixture, most notably Quinton Davids takes his place in the flyhalf position again, as Ruben Crous covers inside centre and Enzo Beukes falls into the fullback position.

The visiting team have shown great improvement over their last couple of matches, and they seemed to have clicked last weekend when they managed a 22-all draw against Witteberg.

They will look to take it one step further this weekend and pull off an upset against the home team.

    The teams are:

    Noord-Kaap vs Diamantveld at 13:30:

Noord-Kaap: 15 Jonaden Links, 14 Junior Kettledas, 13 Kimi van den Horst, 12 Abdul Fischer, 11 Keante Pienaar, 10 Eldridge Jack, 9 Lwandle Maseko, 8 Shaw Lourens, 7 Melvin Diedericks, 6 Tyron China, 5 Thaylin Rose, 4 Wentzel Hibbert, 3 Tebogo Motswenyane, 2 Liam Harmse, 1 Liyabona Mbeke.

Diamantveld: 15 Liam Ferris, 14 Kyle Taute, 13 Valentino Lenge, 12 Simon Liversage, 11 Lehan van der Westhuizen, 10 Marco Matthewson, 9 Dirk van Heerden, 8 Paul Cronje, 7 Ernie Kruger, 6 Achiles de Jager, 5 JJ Fourie, 4 Diwan Muller, 3 Flip di Randt, 2 De Wet du Plooy, 1 FJ de Fries.

Welkom Gimnasium vs Hoërskool Trio at 13:00:
