Grey College remained steadfast in defence to hold on to the smallest of leading margins and claim a hard-fought victory over Outeniqua

Watch the game again on SuperSport Schools here.

The team from Bloemfontein met their most formidable challenge this season in George against an inspired Kwagga team who remained within arm’s length of the visitors to the very end, with Grey walking away as victors by 19-12.

The match lived up to its high expectations from the start, with both teams showcasing clinical, high-tempo rugby from the kickoff.

Grey struck first when their playmaker fullback, Vincent Wolhuter, broke the line and gave the ball to the dynamic flanker, Jean-Henri Smit, who could distribute it to the centre, Benito Goeda, who has been exceptional this year, to score.

Grey looked like they were about to start running away with it when they scored their second try shortly after. Liam van Wyk (hooker) managed to dot the ball down after a dominant rolling maul movement.

Outeniqua continued to enjoy ball possession though, and they never seemed to lose energy in attack as they kept battering at the Grey defensive line.

Their 2022 SA Schools A fullback, JT Strydom, began reducing the deficit with a well-struck penalty conversion with about 10 minutes left in the half.

He had another opportunity as Grey was reduced to 14 players with a yellow card five minutes later but his second attempt was unsuccessful.

The home team maintained the pressure and were rewarded with a penalty try at the very end of the first half, which also meant that Grey were reduced to 13 men for the beginning of the second.

The Kwaggas had their tails up and head boy, Ashwin Damons (centre),  collected a poorly fielded kick forward by his flyhalf, Andrew Stopforth, and slipped straight through the middle to gain the lead for the home team within a minute of the second half’s kickoff.

The advantage was short-lived though. The Bloemfontein boys regained the lead within five minutes when Pieter van der Merwe (centre) showed immense speed and broke through to allow Goeda to go over for his second try of the day.

Crucially, Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf) kept his cool and was able to add the conversion as these would be the final points scored in the match with 30 minutes still left on the clock.

Outeniqua maintained the pressure throughout the rest of the half, but Grey will take immense pride in the character shown as they were scrambling to prevent the Kwaggas from converting said pressure into points.

It was not the prettiest Grey rugby we have seen this year by a long shot, but the Grey boys continued shutting down the Outeniqua attack when it looked certain that the home team would get over the line.

Goeda, Wolhuter and Ian van der Merwe stood out for Grey, and though this was not the overbearing performance we have come to know, partly due to Outeniqua’s industrious attacking play, it was a trial by fire for the Grey team which they passed by gritting their teeth and doing the hard stuff.

It can be argued that coming away with a difficult win like this is even better than a 50-point romp.

Grey were defending in their danger zone with a yellow card, which turned into two yellow cards, for what seemed like an eternity, but captain, JJ Theron (no. 8), and his men stood strong in the face of an inspired Outeniqua attack.

For Outeniqua, it will, unfortunately, be a case of what could’ve been, as they missed two penalty kicks, and were unable to convert lengthy attacking play into points.

Regardless, the home team have shown that they deserve to be considered among the best, as they gave Grey, who will surely now be considered the top South African school team at the moment, a real run for their money.

Their replacement scrumhalf, Ellie Meyer, played phenomenally and stepped up to convert Damons’ try.

Their forwards also managed to match a Grey pack that has been demolishing their opposition this year up front.

Though they will be bitterly disappointed by the loss, their play on the day bodes extremely well for the rest of the season and it would be no surprise if this is their only loss of the season.

As for Grey, they seem to be unstoppable at the moment, but face another mammoth challenge in the form of Garsfontein in two weeks’ time at the Wildeklawer Festival

Garsfontein just beat Affies 45-38 to extend their unbeaten run this season. That match is set up to produce another huge battle between the best schoolboy rugby teams in the country.

    Scorers:

Grey College 19 (12) – Tries: Benito Goeda (2), Liam van Wyk. Conversions: Ian van der Merwe (2). Outeniqua 17 (10) – Tries: Aswin Damons, Penalty Try. Conversion: Ellie Meyer. Penalty: JT Strydom.

    Puntemakers:

Hoërskool Upington 43 – Drieë: Khayalenkosi Maganga (2), PA Karsten, Jaco Fourie. Doelskoppe: Ruwin Isaks (4). Strafdoele: Isaks (5). Diamantveld 31- Drieë: Lehan van der Westhuizen (2), Valentino Lenge, Kyle Taute, Simon Liversage. Doelskoppe: Marco Mathewson (3).

Wildeklawer 14 – Drieë: Gerero Ontong, Jona Tities. Doelskoppe: Tities (2). Douglas 12 – TBC

    Ander tellings:

    Duineveld 86, Kalahari 8.

Upington: 15 Louwan Harper, 14 Khayalenkosi Maganga, 13 Siphe Msebenzi, 12 Ruwin Isaks, 11 Le-Roy Daries, 10 Emlyhn Jacobs, 9 Neil Petro, 8 Jaco Fourie, 7 Sipho Livingi, 6 Sibusiso Kholi, 5 Ruan Janse van Rensburg, 4 Roedolf Duraan, 3 Niel Visser, 2 Roelof Slabbert, 1 Petrus Karsten.

Diamantveld: 15 Marno Greef, 14 Kyle Taute, 13 Valentino Lenge, 12 Simon Liversage, 11 Lehan van der Westhuizen, 10 Marco Mathewson, 9 Dirk van Heerden, 8 Stiaan Loggenberg, 7 De Villiers Straus, 6 Achiles de Jager, 5 JJ Fourie, 4 Diwan Muller, 3 Flip du Randt, 2 De Wet du Plooy, 1 FJ de Fries.

    Ander bepalings:

    Vrydag – 17:10 – Douglas vs Wildeklawer. Saterdag – 14:30 – Duineveld t. Kalahari.

Naas Olivier se Rustenburg span speel vanjaar baie goeie rugby.

  • In form Kwaggas and Grey College to face each other in a titanic battle

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

After the early fixtures and the NMI Toyota Menlyn North/South tournament at Affies at the beginning of the month it is clear that, Outeniqua and Grey College, are the standout teams so far this season.

As fate would have it, these two teams face each other this weekend to remove any speculation as to how they would compare to one another.

Bloemfontein’s rugby factory, Grey College, travels to George this weekend to face Outeniqua for what promises to be one of the games of the year.

Watch the match live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com)

Although some of the other big guns like Paarl Boys’ High and Garsfontein might still have something to add to the conversation.

Grey have started their campaign firing on all cylinders with a team that has been playing together since the World Schools Festival at the end of 2022.

This year they have already done away with the likes of Paarl Gimnasium (33-12) and Maritzburg College (37-24), and it looks like it will take a special effort to prevent another perfect season for the boys from Bloem.

Outeniqua is a team that specializes in big moments though and strong wins over Monument (32-27) and Noordheuwel (18-14) have stated their intent for their centenary year. Beating Grey for the fourth time in their history, at home, in their 100th year, would be the perfect way to celebrate the immense growth of their rugby program.

Grey is accustomed to being the number one target though, and has a history of spoiling many a school’s “dream season”.

Their forward pack, led by their captain and eighthman, JJ Theron, have been exemplary this year, not only scoring many of Grey’s tries but also creating a solid platform to allow the likes of Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf), Benito Goeda (centre) and Vincent Wolhuter (fullback) to perform their magic in the backline.

Players like JT Strydom (fullback) and Estiaan Cronje (centre) have been involved in some spectacular backline play for Outeniqua in their previous fixtures and the home team will want to play the game at a high pace to allow their backline to showcase their talent, but it will be up to their forwards to secure quick ball against the Grey pack.

There will also be an interesting battle in the front as the Kwaggas’ SA Schools loosehead prop, Ruan Swart, take on Jean Erasmus in the scrums. Swart who is originally from the City of Roses and attended Jim Fouche before joining Outeniqua would’ve probably never made it to Craven Week if he stayed in the Free State.

The two teams have met on ten previous occasions, with the side from George winning two of those matches in 2005 and 2013.

Their previous encounter, last year, was called off after 35 minutes of play due to the danger of lighting, but Grey already had a solid 21-3 lead at that point.

That game, in Bloemfontein, was meant to be the first of what will hopefully become an annual fixture between the two and this year’s meeting will go a long way towards deciding whether such an inter could be feasible for both schools.

With the success of Outeniqua’s rugby program over recent years, producing players like Warrick Gelant, Manie Libbok, Akker van der Merwe and Duhan van der Merwe, and Grey’s sustained success over its history, this will be a highly competitive pairing and would be a welcome addition to the calendar.

    The teams:

Outeniqua: 15 JT Strydom, 14 JJ Daters, 13 Ashwin Damons, 12 Estiaan Cronje, 11 Keenan Jantjies, 10 Andrew Stopforth, 9 Jamil Pretorius, 8 Brendan Gouws, 7 Dewald Gerber, 6 Jefwinn Wesso, 5 Michael Cronje, 4 Jayden Potgieter, 3 Juan Kleynhans, 2 Nathan Smit, 1 Ruan Swart.

Grey College: 15 Vincent Wolhuter, 14 Hayden Tolmay, 13 Benito Goeda, 12 Pieter van der Merwe, 11 Martin Botha, 10 Ian van der Merwe, 9 Christiaan van der Westhuizen, 8 JJ Theron, 7 Keegan Scholtz, 6 Jean-Henri Smit, 5 Marno Stopforth, 4 Heinrich Theron, 3 Jean Erasmus, 2 Liam van Wyk, 1 Ranon Fouché.

Red Army makes Boishaai sweat in main game of KES Easter Festival

Paarl Boys’ High managed to overcome a Red Army onslaught, beating King Edward VII by 10-8 in a thriller of a game on day two of the Standard Bank KES Easter Festival.

There was not an empty seat in sight as the Joburg faithful attended the annual Easter sporting bonanza en masse in support of the home team.

Catch all the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

The King Edward VII boys did not disappoint their loyal supporters, putting in a heroic effort against the powerhouse from Paarl, managing to stun their opponents, even if they were not able to come away with a win.

This is the first time Boishaai is attending the festival, and they have already left their mark, beating Selborne comprehensively 48-5 on day one.

It was the home team who looked like the dominant side in the first half though, applying early pressure with a penalty conversion by their flyhalf, Simphiwe Moyo

Moyo had a brilliant day, leading the KES attack with ball in hand and pinning the Paarl boys in their own half with some spectacular kicks.

The continued pressure exposed some cracks in the Paarl game that they will need to address before they face their remaining rivals for the top position in SA schools rugby this year.

In a show of solidarity with the Boishaai player, Chris Jordaan, who recently suffered a serious injury during a match at last weekend’s North/South tournament, the KES no. 8, Kebotile Maak, played without a number on his back.

Maak also had an outstanding game, leaving everything on the pitch for his side.

The match was so physical and hard-fought, that it took 21 minutes for the first try to be scored.

The Paarl defence flinched first, as big Esethu Mnebelele, the hooker, powered over the line to the delight of the crowd, supported by his tighthead prop, Joshua Aube.

The first half ended with the home team in the ascendency, leading 8-0.

Boishaai showed champion’s grit, never dropping their heads even after more of their attacks were laid to waste by an immovable KES defence.

It took 40 minutes of play for Boishaai to score their first points when they finally decided to attempt to take a shot at goal.

Their fullback, JC Mars, who was also excellent in defence, converted the penalty for the visitors.

Boishaai stuck to their structures and were finally rewarded for their endless pressure when their stalwart hooker, HD Odendal, managed to drive over the try line at the back of a well-set maul. Daniel van der Merwe, on at flyhalf for Boishaai, kept a cool head and managed to add the conversion that would ultimately decide this epic battle.

The KES crowd nearly burst at the seams with excitement as their lightning-quick winger, Timi Oluwole, darted down the touchline, only to be denied by a brilliant defensive effort by Mars.

Boishaai have one final hurdle, in Northwood, to navigate on Monday to end their week unbeaten. Northwood has also not lost this week though and will be looking to cause a major upset.

Selborne also managed to pull off a win against an energetic Parktown attack.

The Selborne captain and vice-captain, Grant Day (flanker) and Amani Somane (fullback) led by example, scoring the first two tries for the Border team.

Parktown were defending for most of the first half but managed to score with their first real opportunity to attack when Karabo Phakwane (winger) finished off an acrobatic try in the corner.

Parktown launched a comeback attempt with two late tries in the game by Thombela Folo (scrumhalf) and replacement, Sejoto Olwenkosi, but it was too little, too late for the Parktownians, and Selborne managed to hold on to win 23-17.

Selborne are facing a wounded KES on Monday and will need to seriously improve on their performance to avoid disaster. They were not able to convert any of their tries and they left numerous opportunities on the field. KES will punish them if they repeat their mistakes on Monday.

Queen’s College put in a stellar performance to outplay the big boys from Ben Vorster.

Spurred on by the Gwijo chants of the Queen’s College supporters, the forward pack stepped up to match the Buffels, allowing their backline to do their magic.

Sisipho Mpaka, the open-side flanker, crossed the whitewash twice, and flyhalf, Turshaan Hare, was inspirational with his contribution, also adding ten points off the tee.

Queen’s College head boy and no. 8, Axola Khatshwa, played phenomenally and acted like an extra centre when he slid into the backline on the attack and Jade Zindlu controlled the game from the scrumhalf position after coming on at halftime.

On defence it was their winger, Siya Konki, who excelled, standing up to his much larger opponents and delivering a try-saving tackle at the end of the first half, just as Ben Vorster seemed to be gaining momentum.

For the Limpopo boys, the big lock, Aldo Blignaut, stood out, carrying the ball well and driving back the Queen’s players in every collision. He also contributed to his team’s only try on the day, paving the way for the loosehead prop, Meyer Jacobs, to get over the line.

Siyanda Nkosi (centre) set the tone for the game by scoring two equally impressive tries early on in Northwood’s romped to victory over Hudson Park.

The Durban side’s lock, Vuyo Gwiji and no. 8, Siyanda Mabuza, also excelled for their team and their flyhalf, Cade Latham contributed with some difficult conversions.

Diamantveld rallied to earn an important win over Nico Malan. The team from Kimberley struggled in the first half, as they have been struggling this season, but their core leadership group managed to take control of the game and come back after trailing at halftime to win 37-21.

Their lock, JJ Fourie, scored the try to give them the lead, which was a just reward for his role in their play.

Durbanville put on a masterclass in the first game of the day, scoring eight tries to their opponents’ four in an action-packed match that was the perfect way to kick off the day’s activities.

Almost all twelve of the tries could make the festival’s highlight reel with both teams playing exhilarating running rugby.

James Nero (centre) scored two of Durbanville’s tries and Shaun Klein scored a try and converted all eight of their tries, adding a massive 21 points to his team’s total by himself.

    They beat Kemptonpark 61-21.

Eldoraigne proved too strong for St David’s Marist. Though a brace of tries by the St David’s centre, James Pearson, and ten points off the boot of flyhalf, Jayden Jafta, gave their team a respectable score, Eldoraigne were in control throughout the match.

The Centurion side’s captain, Johan Coetzee (no. 8) finished off an electric piece of play to score the final try of the match, after a world-class pass by his scrumhalf, Donnevin Naude

Naude was integral to the Eldoraigne game throughout and the team will be happy with a solid performance by some of their younger players and a good win.

While all the action was taking place on the field, KES old boys Dylan Curtis and James Gerber were in action off the field, where they were virtually cycling up Mt Everest in a bid to raise money to benefit a student who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend an institution such as KES, another fitting gesture by the hosts, in line with the spirit of these events.

The hosts flexed their muscles in front of an appreciative home crowd.

KES dominated from kickoff, with the big prop, Joshua Aube powering over the line within the first two minutes.

The home team’s fullback, Tirhani Masondo, who was in the flyhalf position for them last year, had an exceptional day, off the tee and when carrying the ball.

KES centre, Olunje Mehlomakulu scored twice to the delight of the packed crowd at the home game and looked like he will be providing more moments for the highlight reels over the coming weekend.

Paarl Boys’ High continued building on the momentum of their successes at the North/South tournament earlier in the week when they emphatically beat Selborne 48-5.

This Boishaai team looks like the team to beat at the festival this year and tomorrow’s encounter between them and the hosts promises to be electric.

The first half seemed to fly by, with neither team really getting past their opponents’ defensive lines and Selborne doing well to disrupt the Paarl lineouts. The boys from Paarl led most of the half 3-0 after a successful penalty conversion by Daniel van der Merwe (centre).

Selborne’s game-breaker fullback, Amani, Somana, managed to get the team from the Border region in front with an excellent try against the run of play in the final moments before the break.

Boishaai flipped a switch at half time though, and replacements Divan Fuller, Alfie Holm and HB Odendal had a marked impact when they came on.

The second half belonged to Paarl, with them scoring seven unanswered tries.

The Paarl Boys’ captain, JC Mars (fullback), scored an exceptional individual try, returning a kick from his own half and beating six defenders to dive over the whitewash and regain the lead for his team and setting the tone for the rest of the match.

Scott Nell (winger) and Fuller (replacement flanker) each dotted down twice, while Micheal Versveld (lock) and Holm (replacement prop) also managed to score.

Queen’s College showed their flair, outplaying the big boys from Diamantveld.

The Queen’s’ backline out-skilled their opponents and were deadly on the counterattack, often coming away with points after lengthy periods of patient Diamonds attack.

Diamantveld’s forward pack played well, but players like Siya Konke, the Queen’s College winger, seemed to be likely to score a try every time possession was turned over.

Turshaan Hare, the Queenstown scrumhalf, was heavily involved in their attack until he had to leave the field injured. The little scrummy controlled the game brilliantly and initiated most of the successful attacking moves, as well as kicking brilliantly from the tee.

Another player who stood out for Queen’s is their lanky no. 8, Axola Khatswa, who scored a brilliant try moments after creating another try for his scrumhalf, Hare.

The tall backrower lost a boot during the sprint, but that did not slow him down for a second, as he darted through the defence before releasing the ball to his everpresent scrumhalf.

Two minutes after that try was scored, Khatswa sprinted down the wing again to get his own name on the scorecard.

Nico Malan comfortably put St David’s away 46-11, with outside centre, Themba Hlela and fullback, Jadon Witbooi, both scoring a brace of tries for the team from Humansdorp.

St. David’s Marist Inanda from Sandton managed to launch a couple of exciting attacks, but a solid defence by Nico Malan and handling errors at crucial moments saw many of these attempts come to nothing

Eldoraigne also proved much too powerful for Parktown, scoring 38 unanswered points in their encounter. Their lively loose forwards, Johan Coetzee (no. 8) and Divan de Jager (flanker) both managed to score two tries, while the other flanker, Anroux du Plessis and Marcand Nel (centre) also scored a try each.

The success of their back three is a testament to how well they controlled the game with their forward pack, simply being too powerful over the ball to allow the Parktown boys an opportunity to launch an attack.

Northwood managed to weather a strong attack by the big Limpopo boys from Ben Vorster to come away with a 31-15 victory.

Their lightning-quick winger, Ramatuku Sikhahane scored twice to swing the momentum towards the team from Durban.

    The scorers are:

Some new faces at this year’s Standard Bank KES Easter Festival

NewsGKESThe annual Standard Bank King Edward VII Easter Festival kicks off on Thursday, 6 April, in Johannesburg and the fixtures promise another action-packed week of rugby during the Easter school holiday.

Catch the games live on SuperSport Schools. – Register your free account now

14 schools will be in action over the three days, and as always, some of the matches promise to showcase a highly exciting brand of rugby between some of the top schools in the country as well as some teams with a history of delivering big upsets.

Paarl Boys’ High’s season does not get any easier, after two hard-fought victories over Jeppe and Affies at the North/South festival in Pretoria, they are back in action on day one against Selborne College before they play the hosts in the main game of the second day and Northwood on the last day.

Selborne has a list of famous sporting alumni, from Mark Andrews and Brent Russell to Mark Boucher and Jody Scheckter, but they have yet to establish the dominance of old on the rugby pitch in recent years, losing to Marlow earlier in the season at the Grens festival, but a good performance this week can change the trajectory of their season.

The hosts, King Edward VII, also need to perform this week after going down by 49-19 against Paarl Gimnasium when they represented the North last week.

KES is the Alma Mater of Springbok hookers, Scarra Ntubeni and Malcolm Marx, as well as the loose-forward, Joe van Niekerk and winger, Bryan Habana. The Welsh prop Rhys Thomas also attended King Edward VII, so they are no strangers to producing some great players and will hope that this group will also be able to realize their potential at this prestigious festival.

They have three challenging fixtures in Hudson Park, Boishaai and Selborne to get through over the Easter period.
