The annual Jean de Villiers U16 rugby tournament, hosted by Paarl Gimnasium, has evolved into one of the most prestigious under-16 tournaments in the world, with top schools like Paarl Gimnasium, Paarl Boys’ High, Grey College, Affies, Monument, Paul Roos Gimnasium and Boland Landbou who have all committed to competing at every tournament since its inception in 1993.

With the calibre of schools competing, it should be no surprise that dozens of Springbok legends played in this tournament before going on to have professional careers. There are sure to be some future stars playing on Saturday as well.

The hosts take on the mighty Grey College from Bloemfontein on the first day, which is sure to be a clash of the titans as both of these teams have been dominating their opponents in 2023.

Gimmies ran 97 points past Potchefstroom Gimnasium in their opening match of the season, and Grey has also managed to score 106 in their last two matches combined.

On Monday, the Oakdale Landbou boys from Riversdale take on the mighty Marlow Landbou from Cradock in what is sure to be a highly physical clash.

On Wednesday, Paarl Boys’ High will play against Hoërskool Nelspruit in the final match of the tournament.

The team selectors for the 2023 Grant Khomo Week will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on these fixtures, as it provides some of the most competitive matchups of the season, with some of the top rugby schools in South Africa playing against each other.

Hul skrumskakel, Tristan van der Walt, is net so indrukwekkend.

Fichardtpark 40 (21) – Drieë: Janco Mollentze (2), Wian Pienaar, Edward Mpinga, Devante Claassen, Strafdrie. Verdoellings: Dailen Geldenhuys (4) Hans Moore 0.

Fichardtpark 50 – Drieë: Jaco Janse van Rensburg (2), Devante Claassen, Edward Mpinga, Janco Mollentze, MJ Hattinngh, Jaco Grobbelaar, Nathan Dodd. Verdoelings: Dailen Geldenhuys (4), Pule Motsilili (2). Brandwag (Benoni) 19.

Jim Fouché 31 – Drieë: Stefan Venter (2), Tristan van der Walt. Verdoelings: Tristan van der Walt (2). Strafskoppe: Tristan van der Walt (4). Secunda 31 – Drieë: Luan Lottering (3), Lie-Chaen Müller, Tiaan de la Rey. Verdoelings: Luan Lottering (3).

  • Paarl Gim fends off the Jade Brigade in a titanic clash

Paarl Gim fends off the Jade Brigade in a titanic clash

ARCHIVE PHOTO | PHOTO: Frans Lombard

Paarl Gimnasium were able to endure and fend off an incredible chase by the Jade Brigade when the two teams faced each other on Friday.

Last year’s match, which Paarl won 12-6, was considered an excellent, closely fought game, but it was outshone entirely by the class of 2023, as Gimmies added another win to their unbeaten streak, beating Stellenberg by a single point, 24-23.

Captain and star flyhalf, Kyle Smith, got the home team on the front foot immediately with a deep, hanging kickoff, putting the visitors under pressure from the word go.

Smith represented WP last year at age level, and showcased his skill in this game again, masterfully directing the Paarl attack, stepping past defenders at will and being rock solid in defense.

Gimmies were able to drive their hooker, Jannie Grobbelaar, over for a try within the first minute, setting the tone for what was to become an immensely physical game from both sides. There will be some very sore bodies today.

The early try only seemed to galvanize the Stellenberg boys though, as they matched Gimmies’ intensity at the kickoff.

Paarl were able to absorb the pressure, as handling errors by Stellenberg broke their momentum and turned over their attacking possession.

The handling errors might very well be a testament to how big some of the tackles were on either side, but Stellenberg will have a look at this aspect, they cost themselves a number of opportunities throughout the game.

David Kotze, the Gimmie scrumhalf, was probably the player of the day, standing out among some exceptional players. The lively scrummy darted around a ruck near the Stellenberg goal line to score the first of his three tries.

His second came after flanker, Louw du Toit, broke the defensive line at pace, giving out to the loosehead prop, Xander Mynhardt, who stepped away from defenders like he was born to be a backline player before giving the ball to Kotze, who seemed to always be near, to dive over the line.

Ruben Thompson, the Stellies centre, managed to keep his team in the game in the first half with three brilliantly taken penalties. He knocked over his third in the final moments of the half, from 40 meters out, off the upright and over to reduce the deficit to 17-9 at halftime.

Whatever coach Divan Batt said to his big tighthead, Herman Lubbe, during the break worked a treat. Lubbe and his pack dominated the scrums in the second half, allowing the visitors to take the game to Paarl and work on building a comeback.

Not before Kotze could complete his hat trick though. Centre Enzo Labuschagne who played wing last year, broke away down the touchline on a counterattack, passing the ball to his scrumhalf at just the right moment, allowing him to score unhindered.

With the score at 24-9 with 15 minutes to go, Stellenberg doubled down on attack, they were dominant in the scrum, and the Stellenberg loose forwards were quick to get over the ball in the rucks.

The sustained pressure paid off, a Gimmies flanker Adraun Kotze received a yellow card for repeated infringements in defence, and when Stellenberg had the opportunity to scrum their no. 8, Marco Ferreira, had to stay in the backline to keep the numbers even in the pack.

They won the ball off their opponents’ scrum and Clyde Frieslaar (scrumhalf) swung the ball to Ferreira, who gave it to Thompson. The centre could then get the ball out to the extra man, the replacement centre, Stefan Visser, who did exceptionally well to finish off the try.

The match continued without ever losing its intensity. Even when Gim received the ball deep in their half, after regulation time was up, there was never any doubt that the boys were going to play to the very end.

Knowing that they could not lose the game anymore, Gim started an attack from their own danger zone but lost the ball. Luc Cilliers, the Stellenberg winger, could kick the loose ball through and dive on it over the line to bring Stellenberg to within three points with only the conversion to go.

Thompson, who had a brilliant day with the boot, added the extras, but it wasn’t enough to snatch the victory.

It was an exhilarating game of rugby, and both teams will be proud of their performance.

This was the perfect preparation for both teams as they get ready to compete in the annual North/South Tournament at Affies next weekend.

  • Rondebosch travel to Riversdal for first-ever clash against Oakdale

NuusG OakdaleA brand new rivalry is to be born between the city slickers and the farmers as Rondebosch Boys’ High travel to meet Oakdale Landbou for the first of what they hope will become an annual fixture.

The game will be broadcast live on SuperSport Schools. Register Now

The fires will be lit on Friday night, as the Rondebosch boys arrive at the Oakdale hostel where they will be spending the evening, for a massive braai and social before the competition begins on Saturday.

This will be the first time that these two schools face each other on a rugby field, and both teams will be looking to begin this relationship on a winning note.

The first team game kicks off at 12:50 on Saturday at Oakdale.

Oakdale has produced a number of Springbok legends over the years, with JC Janse van Rensburg, Johann Muller, Meyer Bosman and Pedrie Wannenburg all receiving their education at the agri-college.

The hosts will also be able to fall back on the experience of their loosehead prop, Marco Steyn (captain) and the evasive winger, Therlow Prins who represented both the first team and the SWD Craven Week team last year.

Prins was also selected to represent the SWD u17 sevens team, along with flanker, Hanno Louw and fullback, Kurt Coetzee.

Coach Malan du Plessis who is into his 12th year at the helm of Oakdale rugby, and his team will look forward to testing his talented group of players before the North/South tournament at the end of the month in Pretoria where they will face Helpmekaar and Garsfontein.

The Rondeboschers have also cemented their name in the Springbok history books with the legacy of Hanyani Shimange when he received his first international cap in 2004.

Other notable alumni include rugby commentator, Gcobani Bobo, who played Super Rugby for the Cats, Sharks and Stormers, as well as Springbok Sevens stars, Zain Davids and Devlon Blood.

The Rondebosch squad may not have the experience of their opponents, but the team from Cape Town proved that they can topple any team again last year, beating the likes of SACS, Boishaai, Stellenberg, Paul Roos, Bishops and Wynberg during the 2022 season.

This encounter promises to be the beginning of an exciting competition between two schools with rich and varied rugby traditions.

  • Rusties on top against Montana in epic battle in NWU Prestige Series

Rusties on top against Montana in epic battle in NWU Prestige Series

NewsGMontanaHoërskool Rustenberg held on to a 24-20 win over Montana in an epic battle between the two sides on Thursday in Pretoria.

It was a closely fought match throughout, with Montana showing great improvement since last week’s loss against Die Anker in Brakpan.

Monties managed to keep the game close with tries by Liam de Villiers (winger), Divan Nel (fullback) and replacement, Reuben van Hammersveld and Rigard van Rensburg (flyhalf) who also added five with a penalty and a conversion.

The Rusties still looked as dangerous as last weekend though, and they were able to capitalize on loose play, scoring four tries courtesy of Johan Retief (hooker), Carlo van Wijk (prop), MC Smit (winger) and JG Steenberg (Nr. 8).

Ultimately, it was the two conversions, the first taken by the flyhalf Duquan (Awie) Alberts and the second by the winger Lorenzo Snyers, that separated these two teams on the day.

This result sees Rustenburg go two from two, which is exactly the kind of start they would have wanted, Montana, on the other hand, will still take motivation from their improvement and look forward to their next fixture against Hugenote in Springs.

Middelburg and Zwartkop played in an exciting matchup which saw Middelburg emerge victorious by 25-12.

Zwartkop played with immense character, keeping the game relatively tight up to the 58th minute, with Wihan van der Berg (centre) and Stiaan Bekker (winger) managing to score.

Even after Middies seemed to have pulled away, committed Zwartkop defenders were still chasing down breaks and putting in try-saving tackles, never losing hope.

Van der Berg and fullback, Kieraan Krotz, and scrumhalf, Waldo Smit, all had great games, and are ones to keep an eye on for the rest of the season.

It was Middelburg, however, controlling the game, with flanker, Ronin van Niekerk and no. 8, Tjaart Joubert, causing a lot of trouble for the visitors in the breakdown, and flyhalf, Divan van der Westhuizen, maintaining the pressure with his excellent touch finders, two penalties and two conversions.

They were able to take the lead through a try by centre, Luke Geldenhuys, in the first half, and build on it in the second, when hooker, Funani Chauke, finished off a well-rehearsed lineout move.

It was Joubert, the big nr.8 who scored the final try of the match, picking the ball up at the back of a scrum and breaking around it with nobody to stop him in sight.

Die Anker proved to be too powerful for Hugenote, managing to get six tries against the visitors without a response.

Benton Giessing, their playmaker flyhalf, has now scored four tries in two matches and seems to be playing at the top of his game this year.

Defending champs, Noordheuwel, were simply too strong for Oosterlig, beating the visitors by 55-10.

The Oosterlig boys were overrun in the first half but also showed character to get their scrumhalf, Jaco du Toit, over the line in the second.

    Scorers:

Hoërskool Rustenburg 24 – Tries: Johan Retief, Carlo van Wijk, MC Smit, JG Steenberg. Conversions: Duquan Alberts, Lorenzo Snyers. Montana 20 – Tries: Liam de Villiers, Reuben van Hammersveld, Divan Nel. Conversion: Rigard van Rensburg. Penalty: Van Rensburg.

Hoërskool Middelburg 25 (13) – Tries: Fumani Chauke, Tjaart Joubert, Luke Geldenhuis. Conversions: Divan van der Westhuizen (2). Penalties: Van der Westhuizen (2). Zwartkop 12 (7) – Tries: Wihan van der Berg, Stiaan Bekker. Conversion: Crawford Joubert.

Die Anker 36 – Tries: Benton Giessing (2), Branden Crous, Divan du Plooy, Duhan du Plessis, Damien Muller. Conversions: Branden Crous (3). Hugenote 0.

Noordheuwel 55 – Tries: Janemo Luiters (3), Divan Cruywagen, Juan Fourie, Marshall de Vos, Jeandré de Villiers, Coun-Lee Koekman, Ludie Schutte. Conversions: JT Kapank (5). Oosterlig 10 – Try: Jaco du Toit. Conversion: Caiden Serfontein. Penalty: Serfontein.

  • Fichies Leeus voor groot toets teen Trio in Kroonstad

Fichies Leeus voor groot toets teen Trio in Kroonstad

    FOTO: Dirkie Groenewald
