  • Grey College starts the season in fifth gear against Welkom Gim

Grey College starts the season in fifth gear against Welkom Gim

Grey College put in a solid performance, beating Welkom Gimnasium by 71-21 in their own backyard on Saturday.

Watch the game again on SuperSportSchools – https://bit.ly/GreyGim2023.

Gimmies showed grit to attempt to claw their way back in the second half, spurred on by the home supporters, but ultimately Grey simply outplayed the locals and earned an impressive win.

Five of the players in Grey’s starting forward pack had already earned caps for the first team last season, and their experience and chemistry showed as they completely dominated the Welkom pack from the first kickoff.

Within the first 12 minutes, Christiaan van der Westhuizen (scrumhalf), Jean-Henri Smit (flanker) and captain, JJ Theron (no. 8), all scored and it looked like it was going to be a long day for the home team.

Theron had to leave the field 17 minutes in after receiving a knock. This had a marked effect on the side from Bloemfontein who seemed to struggle to reset for a couple of minutes afterwards.

Soon though, the composure of their experienced players, like Marno Stopforth (flanker), allowed Grey to turn up the heat in Welkom again, scoring twice more before halftime through tries by Ranon Fouché (prop) and Vincent Wolhuter (fullback), and the two accompanying conversions by Martin Botha (winger) taking them into halftime leading by 31-0.

Ian van der Merwe, one of Grey’s most exciting prospects this year, replaced Pharrel van Wyk at flyhalf at half-time and was almost immediately called into action to convert Liam van Wyk’s (hooker) early try in the second half.

Van Wyk’s try came in a similar manner to the earlier tries, with Grey kicking a penalty to touch, being pin-point accurate in the lineout, using their forwards to carry the ball over the advantage line, allowing van der Westhuizen to choose the perfect moment to release the ball and send the hooker crashing over the try-line.

Smit then got his second try, at which point one might have forgiven Gimmies for feeling hopeless.

To their credit though, Welkom, playing in their white jerseys reserved for friendlies, rather than their traditional black and red, continued attempting to build an attack, with Naylen and Naven Goeda looking lively with ball in hand.

Indeed then, Welkom’s first score came from Naven Goeda (winger) brilliantly collecting a kick ahead at pace, darting infield and giving the ball out to Naylen Goeda (fullback) who scored the try.

Hayden Tolmay (winger), who had been playing brilliantly all day, then responded with a try for Grey.

Gim looked energized after finally managing to penetrate Grey’s defence and managed to drive their replacement hooker (no. 16) over for another try in which Kiewiet, Goeda and Ethan Jones (no. 8) all played important roles.

Ronaldo Kiewiet, Welkom’s playmaker flyhalf, then broke away, slicing through the field, managing to evade Grey’s covering defence, running a total of 60 meters to score Welkom’s third.

Again though, the team from Bloemfontein showed just what sets them apart as they simply absorbed the pressure, remained calm, stuck to their structures and reaped the rewards as Pieter van der Merwe scored his second before Martin Botha rounded off what was a comprehensive win for Grey College.

Jannie Geldenhuys, head coach at Grey, and his team will be very satisfied with the result, as they should be after a 50-point victory, however, Grey will surely be looking at the opportunities they let slip and any chinks in their armour exposed by the Gimmie attack as they prepare for the rest of the fixtures this season.

Welkom will take solace in the character shown by their senior players to rally the group as they were facing a humiliating loss, to fight back with pride in the second half.

    Scorers:

Grey College 71 (31) – Tries: Pieter van der Merwe (2), Jean-Henri Smit (2), Vincent Wolhuter, Martin Botha, Hayden Tolmay, Christiaan van der Westhuizen, JJ Theron,  Liam van Wyk, Ranon Fouché. Conversions: Ian van der Merwe (5), Martin Botha (3). Welkom Gimnasium 21 (0) – Tries: Naylen Goeda, Kamohelo Mokoena, Ronaldo Kiewiet. Conversions: Kiewiet (2), Naylen Goeda.

    Puntemakers:

  • Gimmies to host Grey College in Welkom on Saturday

Gimmies to host Grey College in Welkom on Saturday

    NewsGWelkomGim

Encounters between Welkom Gimnasium and Grey College always produced some exhilarating rugby and tomorrow’s clash in Welkom promises to once again deliver on this promise.

It will be the 17th time that these two schools’ first teams lock horns on the rugby field.

Welkom have yet to beat Grey but will be looking to capitalize on their home-ground advantage as this will be only the second time that the two sides are not meeting in Bloemfontein. These two side have played to a draw in 1985 (18-all).

Grey College, however, have already started their year off strong, beating a promising side from Hoërskool Trio in their first game of the season at the President Steyn Sports Day in February.

Welkom Gim retains their playmaker flyhalf, Ronaldo Kiewiet as well as loose-forward, Ethan Jones, and prop, Tristan Appolis, from the team that lost 64-15 in Bloemfontein last year.

Though they also started the season well, with a 25-16 win over Helpmekaar last weekend, the Black Jerseys will know that they will need to up their game when they face Grey.

Grey College would do well not to underestimate their opponents though, as they have shown in the past that they can produce a brilliant running brand of rugby which was able to break through a number of teams’ defences last year.

Fullback, Vincent Wolhuter played an excellent game against Trio and will be one to keep an eye on throughout the season.

Grey’s forward pack has a vast amount of experience in Ranon Fouché (prop), Jean Erasmus (prop), Jean-Henri Smit (flanker), Marno Stopforth (flank) and JJ Theron (No. 8) who all played for the first team last year already, along with Martin Botha (winger) and the Bloemfonteiners will look to dominate up front.

    The teams:

Welkom Gimnasium: 15 Naylen Goeda, 14 Taschon Meas, 13 Mojalefa Mathoka, 12 Jayden Weideman, 11 Naven Goeda, 10 Ronaldo Kiewiet, 9 Julian Samuels, 8 Ethan Jones, 7 Ayanda Silwanyana, 6 Danté Smith, 5 Tyrese Brouers, 4 TBC, 3 Tristan Appollis, 2 Waynedrew George, 1 Keanan August.

    Afskop: 16:00

    Ander kragmetings:

    A-veld

14:40 – Duineveld vs Affies II; 13:30 – Hoërskool Upington vs Affies III.

    B-veld

15:35 – Kimberley Boys’ High vs Affies X.

History was yet again made the Hoërskool Fichardtpark during their annual Nashua Sports Day in Bloemfontein.

The Fichie Lions managed to secure their first ever victory over Hoërskool Diamantveld during the main match of the sports day.

The Lions defeated Diamonds by 33-27 in a tense but also entertaining match which also doubled as the opener for the Wesgrow league.

With the new regulations of the league meaning every team will face each other once and the winner being decided by their ranking at the end of the season, every game will be crucial this year.

Fichardtpark took the lead early with their winger, Janco Mollentze, breaking away down the touchline and scoring in the corner. Mollentze showed throughout the match that he has some serious pace.

Dailen Geldenhuys (flyhalf) then added the two points with a magnificent conversion at a difficult angle.

Diamantveld made their way, patiently, up the field to allow Diwan Muller (lock) to cross the try-line and reduce the deficit.

Shortly after, Fichardtpark’s lively scrumhalf, Devanté Claassen, caught the Diamonds’ defence off-guard, playing a penalty quickly and dotting down behind the line.

Claassen crossed the try-line again later, brilliantly gathering his own kick forward, but the try was disallowed as he was judged to be in touch after having been illegally impeded on by a Diamantveld defender.

Diamantveld responded, applying pressure from the kickoff which ultimately forced the error allowing Kyle Taute (center) to recover a loose ball and dive over the line for the Diamonds’ second.

Fichardtpark looked set to go into halftime leading by four, courtesy of the successful conversions by Dailen Geldenhuys, before Jaco Janse van Rensburg burst over to extend their lead to 19-12 at halftime.

Nathan Dodd, Fichardtpark’s lock, scored the fourth try for Fichies shortly after his second-row partner and captein, Jaco Grobbelaar, channeled his inner winger to break away down the side. Grobbelaar will without a doubt be a strong contender to represent the Free State at the Craven Week later this year in George.

Though Fichardtpark looked the more confident side at this point, Diamantveld calmly kept applying pressure and enjoyed a period of dominance as they scored twice through Valentino Lenge (winger) and De Villiers Strauss (hooker) reducing the deficit to two again.

Diamantveld had an opportunity to take the lead, but a long-range penalty attempt by replacement flyhalf, Simon Liversage, hit the post.

After a period of breathless defence, Fichardtpark conceded another penalty, allowing Simon Liversage a second attempt which he converted to give the Diamonds the lead for the first time in the match.

At this point the visitors seemed to have the upper hand with time running out on the clock, but, failing to secure the kickoff, Diamantveld allowed Fichies a final opportunity to seize the game, and they did.

Jansen van Rensburg played a brilliant setpiece move from the back of the scrum to go over for his second and secure the win in front of an ecstatic home crowd.

The final five minutes of the match were wild and unorganized as both teams were out on their feet, desperately trying to secure possession.

In the end, Fichies held out for a well-deserved win, rounding off their sports day in style and kicking off their season in the best possible way.

Landboudal and Goudveld also produced a thriller of a match, with Landboudal edging it with a penalty kick in the final seconds of the game.

In what was a tightly contested game throughout, it was the boot of fullback, Vuyani Moore, that differentiated the two sides in the end, Landboudal winning 25-22.

Goudveld took an early lead owing to tries created by their powerful forward pack and finished off by Pieter Reyneke (flanker) and Kabous du Plooy (hooker).

But it was the Landboudal backline who provided the spark for them as their winger, Barry Pretorius, scored two superb tries in succession, before their hooker, Kobus Davel, also scored to give them a 15-12 lead at halftime.

Goudveld kept playing structurally well, patiently adding pressure, with their fullback, Ruben Crous, pinning Landboudal in their own half with his educated boot.

Landboudal seemed to play with more intensity though, as was evident as AJ Burger (Flanker) wrestled the ball out of his opposition’s possession to score and extend the lead for the boys from Jacobsdal.

Tries by Schalk du Plessis (center) and Joshua Coertzen (prop) levelled the game up, but whereas Goudveld could not find the accuracy to convert, Landboudal’s fullback, Moore, could barely put a foot wrong during the match.

They called upon their talented fullback to attempt to convert a penalty in the final play of the match, which he duly converted, calm as you’d like, giving Landboudal a three-point victory margin over their counterparts from Gauteng.

Marlow proved to be too strong for JF. Both Josiah Weideman (center) and Burgert van Heerden (Nr. 8) scored twice for the team from Cradock and Arno Nel (lock) also added his name to the scoresheet with a try.

HD Aucamp (hooker) and Burgert van Heerden played pivotal roles in the match. Carrying the ball strongly and staying solid in the defence.

Stefan Venter (hooker) and Heinrich Hattingh (fullback) stood out for Jim Fouché, but the Bloemfonteiners were outmuscled and outplayed by the visiting team.

Marlow won 31-12, stating their intent for the season and showing that they will be a force to be reckoned with this year.

Hentie Cilliers also improved on their performance of last week to beat Louis Botha 12-5

Fichardtpark’s Nashua Sports Day will see 21 schools’ first rugby teams meet in Bloemfontein on Saturday, the 4th of March, in what has grown to be the biggest school sporting event of its kind.

Kalahari High School, from Kuruman, travel to meet Frankfort’s Wilgerivier.

For the players, parents and coaching staff of Kalahari, however, the occasion is overshadowed by the tragic loss of their beloved headmaster, Mr. Freek van Rooyen, on Tuesday, 28 February.

Our thoughts are with them at this time.

Louis Botha face Hentie Cilliers, with both teams suffering defeats in their opening games of the season at the President Steyn Sports Day last weekend.

Louis Botha has still recently been producing the likes of Joseph Dweba, Ox Nché, Oupa Mohoje, Raymond Rhule, Daan Human and AJ Venter and will want to turn their season around after suffering a demoralising loss at the hands of Grey’s second team in their opener.

On the other hand, Hentie Cilliers will feel like they let the opportunity to beat JF slip last week as handling errors and confusion in the lineouts cost them dearly.

That said, these elements can be improved on and it will be interesting to see whether they can avoid repeating those same mistakes after benefitting from another week’s training.

This Saturday will also allow St Anne’s Technical High School to make their debut against Sand du Plessis.

With the school only opening in 2018, having only 400 students enrolled the high school, and rugby only being offered as an extracurricular for the boys since 2022, this will be a very inexperienced group.

With the guidance of head coach, Mr Nakedi, however, St Anne’s will be competing in the Sandveld league this year and we look forward to watching the boys from Virginia progress.

Morné Steyn is arguably Sand du Plessis’ best-known rugby export, along with Dawie Theron and Franco Smith

Bloemfontein’s St Andrews and Aliwal-Noord from the Eastern Cape will face each other in the opening match and will look to provide an exciting start to the day.

Grey College starts the season with a victory over Trio

    PHOTO: Marnus van Wyk

Grey College will be satisfied with the performances of their teams over the weekend at the 30th annual Hester van der Walt Sports Day hosted by President Steyn at the Gonval Store Park just outside Bloemfontein.

With a total of 60 rugby teams across all high school age grades playing on the day, this event was the perfect way to kick off the 2023 rugby season, allowing the respective coaches to evaluate their players and test out different combinations.

Grey College opted to use the event as part of their trials, fielding three teams on the day. Coach Jannie Geldenhuys and co will be happy with the performances put in by the boys with Grey’s experimental teams all winning their matches.

The senior players from Grey who were absent, fulfilling their summer sporting duties, will have some serious competition when they return to the squads.

Grey College’s provisional first team faced Griffons champions, Hoërskool Trio, for the first time in the penultimate match of the day.

Trio had the dream debut season in 2022, playing their first match ever at the President Steyn Sports Day against Jim Fouché, losing 20-3 in that game, but evolving over the course of the season to ultimately beat JF in the Kovsie League’s Shimla final 22-19.

Grey, however, proved too powerful for the newcomers, beating them comfortably by 38-10.

Vincent Wolhuter (fullback), David du Toit (flanker), Marno Stopforth (lock) and Pieter van der Merwe (Center) all crossed the try line in the first half, with Heinz Stockenström (flyhalf) adding two conversions. Louis Boshoff from Trio managed to convert a penalty to get his team on the board.

As expected, Grey made use of their bench to give all their available players some valuable game time. JJ Theron, Jean-Henri Smit, Martin Botha and Erich Visser all came on in the second half and continued applying the pressure.

Erich Visser also played earlier for the second team, excelling in both games.

Trio scored the first try of the second half, with Haaron Kabeya dotting down the ball behind the try line and Louis Boshoff adding the conversion to raise Trio’s score to 10.

Kabeya produced another couple of moments of magic but the visitors from Kroonstad just didn’t manage to converts these into points on the scoreboard.

As the replacements from Grey began making an impression on the game, however, the boys from Bloemfontein regained control.

Grey College’s second team overpowered HTS Louis Botha by 88-0.

Grey’s third team faced Sentraal’s first team in the opening match of the day, beating the Tralies 26-7.

Sentraal opened the scoring when winger, Pat Cloete, pinched an intercept in the seventh minute and scored. Grey was able to level the scores in the dying moments of the first half.

In the second half, Grey scored three unanswered tries and took control of the game.
