Jeppe High School for Boys 33 (19) – Tries: Leruo Dithagiso (2), Matthew Coetzee, Khuthadzo Rasivhaga, Bonga Nxumalo. Conversions: Coetzee (4). St Andrew’s College 5 (0) – Try: Joe Wostenholm.
While many of the big teams are participating in tournaments across the country this week, the Western Cape will still be treated to top-class schoolboy rugby action, with some exciting matchups scheduled for Saturday.
Parel Vallei was on the receiving end of a wounded Outeniqua side in their last outing, but they will look to get back on the winning track when they host Hoërskool Brackenfell in Somerset West.
Despite their loss last time out, the Bulldogs have played some really entertaining rugby this season. The interplay between the backs and the forwards, with Renato Tosi, Michael Kent and Shudley Rhoda starring in their team’s efforts, has seen the PV side to a couple of impressive wins already this season.
They went down 0-68 to the Kwaggas in George. Before that, though, they bested DF Malan (28-18) and Tygerberg (29-14) and they’ve looked like an especially tough out at home this season.
The Brakkies have also delivered some highlights this season. They’re coming off an impressive win over Worcester Gimnasium (22-17), away from home, and though they fell short against SACS (27-54) before that, there is no denying their BMT.
With flyers like Cwenga Ntshapho in the backline, and their playmaker at flyhalf, Junior Louw, guiding their attack, Brackenfell will post a completely different challenge from the other teams who have fallen short in Somerset West.
Meanwhile, an unbeaten Charlie Hofmeyr outfit travels to take on Langenhoven Gimnasium in Oudtshoorn.
The home team has been on a winning streak of late, convincingly beating Langenhoven High, from George, 50-19, which they followed up with a 22-17 victory over George High.
Their opponents from Ceres haven’t yet been stopped in 2024. Philip du Plessis and Zephinith Sass have been two livewires in the Charlies’ outfit, with their star flyhalf, Luan Giliomee, impressing week in and week out.
Langenhoven also have some game-breakers in their ranks. Giliomee’s opposite number, Cade Cayford, has directed his side’s attack with distinction, and scrummy Jayden Arends has also been a menace to their opposition all season long.

Wynberg Boys’ High are yet to taste defeat this season and they’ll be eager to continue on the winning path when they tackle their rivals from Rondebosch.
They convincingly dealt with Bishops last weekend, beating them 35-8 away from home, to kickstart their peninsular campaign.
With dangermen like the big lock, Jaythen Orange, and their star flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed, enjoying a great run of form, the hosts are set up well to avenge their two losses to ‘Bosch last season.
Captain Aden da Costa and company are the favourites, with their season so far highlighted by a win over Paarl Boys’ High in Paarl, but they’ll be aware that the Southern Suburb double-headers pay no attention to form.
Both of last year’s matches produced fireworks, with Rondebosch winning the first 20-16, before sneaking a 21-20 victory in the second clash.
‘Bosch heads into Saturday’s showdown off the back of two big wins, 45-13 against Melkbosstrand and 55-22 against SACS, and they have shown they possess enough firepower to topple any team.
Dylan Miller has been spectacular at fullback, and no. 8 Collin Paul Kemp has been just as destructive.
Meanwhile, SACS will seek to build on the potential they displayed against Paarl Gimnasium last weekend. Despite going down 10-35 to the Paarl giants, SACS impressed and led 7-0 at the break.
They have, however, been plagued by injuries this season and, unfortunately, they lost their captain Seth Bradford to an injury again against Gim, which was his first match back after going down earlier in the year.
Nic Reynolds has led the team with distinction in his absence, though, and will continue to do so this weekend when they welcome Bishops to the Memorial Field.
The Bishops boys will be eager to return to winnings ways after their loss to the marauding Wynberg squad last weekend.
Wholesale changes to the forward pack brings a new-look Bishops to the fore on Saturday. Alex Smith moves from flanker to lock, and Daniel van den Heever (hooker), Andrew Levett (prop), Josh Macdonald (flanker) and Imma Magongwa (flanker) all get a start after not featuring in the run-on XV last weekend.
SACS: 15 Jack Benade, 14 Quewinn Lackay, 13 Nic Reynolds, 12 Matt Carrick, 11 Endi Sidinile, 10 Rayaan Solomons, 9 Max Bester, 8 Daniel Grant, 7 Tashriq Bailey, 6 Zac Wilson, 5 Pierre van Selm, 4 Callum Hirst, 3 Ikhona Maxegwana, 2 Sango Zangqa, 1 Ethan Combrinck.
Bishops Diocesan College: 15 Wa-keem Fortuin, 14 Rynard Gordon, 13 Alex Newton, 12 Alex Laspatzis, 11 Ben Koenig, 10 Jordan Petersen, 9 Lucca Mynhardt, 8 Aza Gabada, 7 Imma Magongwa, 6 Josh MacDonald, 5 James Kotze, 4 Alex Smith, 3 Andrew Levett, 2 Daniel van den Heever, 1 Gareth Mckinon.

Puntemakers
Bloemfontein Hoërskool 34 – Drieë: Brandan Erasmus (2), Ora Maleme (2), Hlalele Motaki, Wessel van der Merwe. Doelskoppe: Kenslin Collins, Jano Jackson. Sand du Plessis 0.
Gqeberha – Grey High was in phenomenal form on the opening day of their home festival, beginning their campaign on a positive note and building some valuable momentum before their big clash against Graeme College on Saturday.
Jon Hobson, Grey’s electric no. 8, put on a show for the home supporters, crossing the try line twice, as they stormed to a convincing 33-15 victory over St John’s College.
It wasn’t easy pickings for the home side, though, as St John‘s launched a valiant fightback after the break. First, their nippy scrumhalf, Thomas Kruger, unlocked the Grey defence to lift his side’s spirits, and then their big hooker, Kakuhle Tungata, made another breakthrough.
It wasn’t enough, though, as the hosts, aided by five-pointers from Lavela Pongolo, Ben Wessels and Fletcher Britz, on top of Hobson’s heroics, reigned supreme.
They’ll look forward to Saturday’s clash against Graeme College, with an eye on exacting revenge, after Graeme beat Grey for the first time in 49 years in 2023.
The Makhanda school was subjected to a rough outing by a wounded Jeppe High School for Boys, who went down to KES last weekend.
Jeppe ran in five tries, while Graeme managed only a three-pointer off the boot of Marcus Williams.
The big flank, Nathan Claassen, had a superb game for the Johannesburg side. He was one of the try-scorers, along with his captain Khuthadzo Rasivhaga, vice-captain Risima Khosa, Matthew Coetzee and Lesego Zungu.
Queen’s College turned on the style in their match against St Stithians.
Two tries apiece by the wingers, Ayathanda Mtyando and Jameel Fleshman, helped power the Komani boys to an impressive 54-19 win.

Gqeberha – St Andrew’s College kicked off their campaign at the Standard Bank Grey High Rugby Festival with an impressive victory over a fired-up Parktown Boys’ High on Thursday.
College grabbed an early lead, scoring twice without a reply in the first half, for a 10-0 head start.
Parktown came back strongly in the second half, and their lively no. 9, Thepiso Tladi, made the breakthrough, which got them on the board.
With their tails up, the Parktown attack kept battering at the SAC defensive line, which remained resolute.
Julian Mapoore was a standout for St Andrew’s, crossing the try line twice to help his team register a convincing victory on the opening day of the festival.
They did well to keep their composure once Parktown began finding their rhythm, and they will look forward to carrying their momentum into their next big challenge when they take on Jeppe High School for Boys on Saturday.
Hudson Park shot out of the blocks in the opener against Die Brandwag, storming to a 19-0 lead by the break.
In the second half, a brace by the Brandwag fullback, Bihaco Jafta, and two more five-pointers, by Derono Potgieter and Nathan Fraser, gave the boys from Uitenhage the lead as the match drew towards its conclusion.
However, a last-minute bit of magic by the Hudson boys sent over Msuthu Mbane to level the scores.
In the second match of the day, Westville Boys’ High had too much firepower for Hoërskool Durbanville.
The Durbies also fought back in the second half, but a brace by their livewire scrummy, Ruvan van der Westhuizen, was not enough to undo the damage done by the Westville boys early on.

Gqeberha – The table is set for an action-packed week at the Standard Bank Grey High Rugby Festival showcasing some of the best schoolboy talent in the country.
Hudson Park and Brandwag kick off the action on Thursday and with 21 games over the two days, fans will have more than enough top-quality rugby to keep them entertained this week.
Here are five players to keep an eye on at this year’s event.
Tanner Howard (Loose forward | Grey High)
The home team’s captain has been in scintillating form this year. He leads from the front and will have a big role to play in their team’s bid to reverse their fortunes against Graeme College in the final match.
D’noven Scheepers (Hooker | Brandwag)
The big hooker from Brandwag represented Eastern Province at the Craven Week last year. With a Brandwag attack built around the set pieces, Scheepers is the anchor for his big pack of forwards.
Luke Cannon (Lock | Jeppe)
The big Cannon from Jeppe has already shown how destructive he can be. He was a key figure in his side’s historic win over Grey College earlier in the season.
Ryan Denston (Scumhalf | Queen’s College)
The dynamic young talent from Queen’s seems to excel at whatever he puts his hands to. He led the 1st XI with distinction on the pitch during the cricket season and has been a livewire for the 1st XV on the rugby field this year.
Ayola Mali (Lock | Graeme College)
Mali stood out at the Academy Week last year as part of the Eastern Province team. If they are to upset the hosts by going back-to-back on Saturday, he is sure to play a leading role for his side once again.
