Green Machine earns 33-21 victory in battle against the Knights

NewsGGlenwoodGlenwood were clearly here to play from the start, and it showed in the final result of 33-21. The Green Machine made quick work of gaining ground and getting near to the Knights try line.

When a penalty was awarded to Glenwood, Andrew Martins kicked the ball out metres before the try line. There was obviously a larger strategy at play, as Keegan Goosen used the lineout to give a short ball to Tyrique Hartnick, Hartnick returned it to Goosen and it was try time for Glenwood.

Johandrê van Rooyen put the conversion through, and Glenwood was seven up at the seven-minute mark.

Glenwood did a great job of putting pressure on Northwood, the Knights had possession and tried to kick downfield to gain some ground; van Rooyen and MJ Schoeman dived in front on the ball, chased it down and Schoeman earned a try for Glenwood.

Van Rooyen’s second conversion brought their lead to a solid 14-0.

Northwood came back in the second half with a new sense of determination, Siyanda Nkosi earned the Knights their first try of the game. Alu Nte sprinted towards Glenwood’s try line, offloaded to Nkosi and they were back in the game.

Cade Latham made the conversion to add some more momentum and narrow the gap.

Glenwood quickly responded by capitalizing on a loose pass, Okonta Chijindu chased it down and scored a try in the far-right corner.

The remainder of the game saw Northwood taking control, Kwenzo Dlamini broke through Glenwood’s defence and made the long run to score a try and Latham made the kick.

Some great passing down the line landed with ball with Nokuthenda Gunda who scored in the far-left corner.

With Latham’s third successful conversion, they had certainly narrowed the gap, however, Glenwood had gained too large of a lead and went on to win the game with a solid victory.

    Scorers:

Glenwood High School 33 – Tries: Keegan Goosen (2), M.J Schoeman, Okonta Chijindu, Tyrique Hartnick. Conversions: Johandrê van Rooyen (4). Northwood School 21 – Tries: Siyanda Nkosi, Kwenzo Dlamini, Nokuthenda Gunda. Conversions: Cade Latham (3)

  • Framesby on top against Grey High, Selborne victorious in exciting clash with Hudson Park

Framesby on top against Grey High, Selborne victorious in exciting clash with Hudson Park

NewsGFramesby1Jordan Luck started things off for Selborne College when they took on Hudson Park today, scoring a try just over three minutes into the game. It was a pushing war between both sides but Selborne managed to drive Hudson back over their line for Luck to put the ball down.

Daniel Larkin took on the position of fullback today instead of his usual flyhalf role, but one thing that did not change was his kicking abilities, easily making the conversion to put Selborne seven points ahead. It is evident why Luck and Larkin represented Selborne at Craven Week.

Hudson did not take their time to respond, Landile Gidi booted the ball downfield and to the right to set off a lineout. They capitalized off this when Luthando Yase got a hold of the ball, steamrolled Selborne’s defence and earned a try.

Anjolauluwa Sogbanmu finished off a great play by Selborne when he faked a pass, completely threw off Hudson’s defence and scored a try.

Selborne’s teamwork definitely gave them the edge, ever pass would find its way to the right player at the right time. It was no exception when Amani Somana sent a low pass to the left, which was received by Larkin, he offloaded to Erich Gravett and it was try time.

Hudson really hit their stride after their successful lineout about 21 minutes in; the ball was offloaded to Yase who broke through the defence, he passed it on to Siyamthanda Klass who stormed ahead to score a try.

This built some momentum; quick hands would lead to another try by Landile Gidi not long after. When Gidi converted his own try, it was now an even 17-17.

Selborne were determined to take the lead again in the second half, Gravett used a couple of dummies to get through the defence and with a well-timed offload, landed the ball with Larkin, who put Selborne’s fourth try on the board. When Larkin converted, the lead had been reclaimed.

There was no selfish play from the Selborne side, Luck had possession and was charging downfield, he offloaded to Siya Sakhela, Sakhela sent it to Anjolauluwa Sogbanmu who earned his second try of the game.

Sakhela went straight from creating an opportunity to seizing one as he scored the next try for Selborne. When Larkin put his third conversion through, it was 36-17.

Hudson would have the last play and the last say of the game with a try from Qiqa Qwesha, however, it was not enough to take the lead.

Selborne played a very strong game and won the match 36-22.

Nico Malan succeeded in defeating a very strong Kingswood side today.

Blaine Isaacs used full pace to evade Kingswood defence, offloading to Dominic Malgas who scored the first try for Nico Malan and of the game. Not even a minute and a half into the game.

Nico Malan maintained this five point lead for nearly 21 minutes of the game, at which point they increased that to a 12-0 lead with a try from Owen Breda and a conversion from Dominic Malgas.

Kingswood were determined to put some points on the board before the end of the first half, and they did just that, with a try from Tadiwa Chikutiro. They spread out wide, got the ball to the far right and Chikutiro chased it down for the five points.

Kingswood opened the second half with a try to get back into the game, however, Nico Malan was ready to fight back.

Nico Malan took the victory after a highly competitive game at 26-20.

    Scorers:

Selborne College 36 Tries: Jordan Luck, Anjolauluwa Sogbanmu (2), Erich Gravett, Daniel Larkin, Siya Sakhela. Conversions: Daniel Larkin (3) Hudson Park High School 22 Tries: Luthando Yase, Siyamthanda Klass, Landile Gidi, Qiqa Qwesha. Conversions: Landile Gidi.

  • The small details made a big difference as Kingswood are the Kings op K-Day

The small details made a big difference as Kingswood are the Kings op K-Day

Kingswood College was wasting no time to get things started this Saturday and put some points on the board. At under a minute into the first half, a penalty was granted in favour on Kingswood College who opted to kick for poles by way of Praise Matsila.

Matsila was successful from more than fifty metres out, giving them a great start to the game and putting them three points ahead.

Following an aggressive tackle, St Andrew’ College received a yellow card, providing another opportunity for Kingswood College to succeed in a penalty kick. Once again, Praise Matsila came through for his squad and made the kick from quite far off. Although there was still much of the game to be played, Kingswood College had earned themselves a decent advantage of six points and positioned themselves in the lead.

Although Kingswood College held the advantage for more than fifteen minutes, St Andrew’ College quickly caught up with their next play. With around ten minutes left in the first half, Oliver Myatt-Taylor scored a try for St Andrews.

Half time would arrive with Kingswood College only one point ahead at 6-5.

After much resistance from both sides, St Andrew’ College put the first points on the board in the second half with yet another try from Oliver Myatt-Taylor. St Andrews took the lead and just needed to maintain this until the end.

Time had already run out and it seemed St Andrew’ College were safe, however, game play continued due to stoppages from the yellow cards. In the last moments, Kingswood College fought relentlessly at St Andrew’ College try line, until Amazing Vheriwa broke through the defence and scored the winning try for Kingswood College. When Praise Matsila succeeded in his third kick of the game, Kingswood took the victory at 13-10.

Kingswood College 13 – Try: Amazing Vheriwa. Conversion: Praise Matsila. Penalties: Matsila (2). St Andrew’s College 10 – Tries: Oliver Myatt-Taylor (2).

  • Its time for K-Day in Makhanda

Its time for K-Day in Makhanda

St Andrew’s College had a memorable win last Saturday when they made a last-minute comeback to defeat Queen’s College 13-11.

St Andy’s showed their determination, the same determination they will bring this Saturday to end things on a high note before the break.

It was not only their matchup against Queen’s that saw St Andrew’s take the win, but their two prior games as well. They earned a 41-19 win over Hudson Park shortly followed by their 26-13 defeat of Selborne College.

It is hard to say who are the favourites going into this game, with Kingswood having a phenomenal season of their own.

In fact, if Kingswood College is victorious on Saturday, it will be their twelfth win of the season. It will also be their sixth consecutive win.

Aside from their long list of triumphs, including beating Dale College by 22-0 in their last matchup and Mary Waters by 44-5 just before that, Kingswood also has three players representing their school as part of the Eastern Province u18 Craven Week team.

Tadiwa Chikutiro, Sinengomso Brawen and Phikolomzi Petse will all take the field during Craven Week to showcase Kingswood’s rugby talent.

They find great strength in their teamwork, pace and ability to think quickly and adapt in high pressure situations.

This should be a great fixture and warm up before the provincial rivalry begins.

    The teams:

St Andrew’s College: 15 Oliver Snart, 14 Jacques Cloete, 13 Joe Bennie, 12 Sintu Mjali, 11 Murray Wilson, 10 Daniel Hickey, 9 Luke Rowley, 8 Andrew Baisley, 7 Jason Dovey, 6 Sinjhun Cawse, 5 Charlie Beaton, 4 Oliver Myatt-Taylor, 3 Ayamnkele Dongwana, 2 Joe Wostenholm, 1 Connor Brand.

  • Maritzburg College earns a 36-14 victory in an epic battle against the Knights

Maritzburg College earns a 36-14 victory in an epic battle against the Knights

    PHOTO: Martin Ashworth

When Maritzburg College and Northwood took the field on Saturday, it was fast paced from the get-go.

Within one and half minutes, a penalty was awarded to Maritzburg. Rhett Quin went for the tap and go, offloading to the forwards to break through the defence.

Thirty seconds later, College was awarded another penalty. There was clearly a plan of action as to how they would approach this; Luc du Toit kicked for the left corner, and it was lineout two metres off the Knights try line.

College gained possession and it was a push towards Northwoods try line, Maritzburg did not cease and the sheer force broke through the defence; Phiwayinkosi Kubheka scored the first try for Maritzburg and of the game. Du Toit succeeded in the conversion and Maritzburg was seven up.

It did not take long for College to strike again; with the backline wanting in on the action this time. Swelihle Mbatha charged down the far right of the field and scored Maritzburg their second try. When Luc du Toit made the second conversion, they had really taken control of the game.

Northwood would not allow half-time to come without putting some points on the board and they were ready for a fight. Luthando Makula made a long pass to Nokuthenda Gunda who seized the opportunity ahead of him, sprinting up left field to score a try for Northwood and get them back in the game. Cade Latham put the conversion through and narrowed the gap.

Despite the fight from both sides for the next seventeen minutes, the score remained at 14-7 until the end of the first half.

The second half followed the same trajectory as the first with Maritzburg opening the scoring and earning the first try by way of Rhett Quin. With Luc du Toit making the conversion, Maritzburg had a decent cushion at 21-7.

This lead was only extended when College was granted a penalty kick and Du Toit once again converted to get them the extra three points.

When time was almost up, with less than seven minutes on the clock, Maritzburg once again found themselves just metres off Northwood’s try line. Du Toit goes for the tap and go, offloading to Luyanda Kunene who easily breaks through the defence and scores another try for College. When Du Toit converted the fourth try, the window was closing for the Knights to make a comeback.

Minutes later, Luyanda Kunene sprinted from the fifty-metre line to score his second try and what would be Maritzburg’s final play of the game.

Northwood put the final points on the board with a try from Siyanda Nkosi and subsequently the conversion from Cade Latham.

This was not, however, enough to secure them the victory against Maritzburg, who had gained a massive lead throughout the game. The Knights and College both put up a great fight, but it was College who were victorious and left the field as champions today.

    Scorers:

Maritzburg College 36 – Tries: Luyanda Kunene (2), Phiwayinkosi Kubheka, Swelihle Mbatha, Rhett Quin. Conversions: Luc du Toit (4). Penalty: Luc du Toit. Northwood 14 – Tries: Nokuthenda Gunda, Siyanda Nkosi. Conversions: Cade Latham (2).

  • St Andrews makes last minute quick recovery to beat Queens

St Andrews makes last minute quick recovery to beat Queens

NewsGStAndrewsCollWhen St Andrew’s College and Queen’s College took the field today, it was a close game if there ever was one.

The first sixteen minutes did not see any points being scored, but rather both schools fighting to keep the other at bay while simultaneously trying to gain ground.

At sixteen minutes, a penalty called in favour of Queens but was shortly overturned in favour of St Andrews, with St Andrews opting to make the kick and gain some forward momentum; ideally putting the initial points on the board.

Daniel Hickey made the kick from quite an unfavorable position, a good distance away and far off to the right, granting St Andrews the three points and giving them an edge in the game.

When Queens were granted a free kick, it made some distance but fell into the position of Jacques Cloete with a brilliant catch. There was no hesitation, and he ran straight ahead, the defence were not prepared for the quick breakthrough.

Cloete outpaced his chasers and put the ball down with ease to score the first try for St Andrews and of the game. Daniel Hickey came through with the conversion and St Andrews were ten points ahead with just over six minutes left in the first half of the game.

It seemed like 10-0 would remain until half time, until St Andrews backline found themselves offside and a penalty was granted to Queens.

Queens opted for the kick; Turshaan Hare succeeded, and Queens was back in the game. Hare repeated this play at the end of the first half, narrowing the gap and ending the first half at 10-6 to St Andrews.

Queens weren’t wasting any time as the second half commenced, with Axola Khatshwa scoring a try at under three minutes into the game. Queens made some quick passes down the line, opening the opportunity for their captain to score their first try game of the game. Queens now had the lead for the first time this game.

This lead was maintained, and it seemed they had it in the bag, as nothing changed on the score board for the next half an hour.

When St Andrews were granted another penalty and time had run out, this would be the final play of the game and all pressure was on Daniel Hickey when St Andrews decided to go for the kick. Daniel Hickey made it look easy, the kick was good, and St Andrews had won the game in the nick of time.

The celebration from players and fans was once in a lifetime, it was a moment that will live on forever and a story that will be cemented in St Andrews legacy.

    Scorers:

St Andrews College 13 – Tries: Jacques Cloete. Conversions: Daniel Hickey. Penalties: Daniel Hickey (2). Queen’s College 11 – Tries: Axola Khatshwa. Penalties: Turshaan Hare (2).

    Other results:

Selborne College 70, Cambridge 12; Hudson Park 33, Stirling 10; Dale College 24, Graeme College 20.

Queens also has two squad members, Mbasa Nda and Ryan Denston, taking part in this years Academy Week.

It is no wonder that such a powerhouse squad has taken so many victories this season, including their 22-0 defeat of Die Brandwag, their 75-14 win over Stirling, a 46-3 defeat over Port Rex and two wins over Hundson Park at 27-7 and 18-13.

NewsGKearsneyCollegeKearsney College is hosting Hilton for their final fixture of the season this Saturday and they will be looking to end things on a high note. They will find some tough competition in Hilton, though.

Both Kearsney and Hilton players have done a good job of earning spots on the Craven Week and Academy Week teams.

Kearsney College will be represented by two players, namely Siso France and Devahn van der Walt, on the Sharks u18 Craven Week squad.

Hilton has done exceptionally well, with four of their players making it onto the Sharks u18 Craven Week squad. Christopher Horak, Akhona Kunene, Hanu Pieterse and Luke Watt will all be representing Hilton College at Craven Week.

Kearsney also has four players attending Academy Week and Academy Week XV that will take the field on Saturday as part of their first team, these being Anele Cele, Connor McIntyre, Heinrich Fourie and Roydan Madatt.

We have already seen competitive rugby from both schools this season and Saturday will provide nothing less.

The Northwood Knights will be battling it out against Maritzburg College this weekend in what should be quite the spectacle.

Northwood has earned some great outcomes of their own this season, including their 29-22 defeat over the Green Machine.
