    Preview – Glenwood vs. Monument

In a Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools match in Durban on Saturday,  Glenwood play host to Monument of Krugersdorp,  two of South Africa’s best school sides this year.

In the recent FNB Top 20,  Monument were ranked 11th,  Glenwood 15th. The difference in standard and ability is negligible. In their 14 matches Glenwood have played against seven teams of Top 20 standard; in their 12 matches Monnas have played against five teams of Top 20 standard.

Glenwood had a slow start to the season ,  but then they were playing only top opposition. They lost heavily to Paarl Gim but more closely to Paul Roos,  Drostdy,  Garsfontein and Kearsney. When their fortunes started looking up they beat Boland Landbou,  Paarl Boys’ High,  Hilton and then last week in a magnificent match Maritzburg College.

Monnas,  on the other hand,  started off well with a win over Noord-Kaap  but subsequently have lost to Centurion,  the strong EG Jansen side (32-18) and then just 13-8 to Grey Bloem in a match they could just as well have won. Then last weekend they drew with the struggling KES side.

To judge from the KwaZulu Natal Craven representative sides,  Glenwood are star-studded.  They have nine players in the KwaZulu Natal Craven Week side – Kerron van Vuuren,  Koos Tredoux,  Ntokozo Vidima,  Mzwandile Mazibuko,  Jaco Coetzee,  Sphamandla Ngcobo,  Akona Nela,  Morné Joubert  and  Corné Vermaak,  back again from injury.

Glenwood and Monnas have met in each of the last three years. Glenwood won 26-5 in 2010 and 16-8 in 2011 while Monnas won 25-18 last year.

If the top schoolboy matches this season are anything to go by, this could be another great match and one too close to predict.

  • Preview – Kearsney College vs. Durban High School

Preview – Kearsney College vs. Durban High School

On Saturday at Botha’s Hill, there will be a full programme of rugby matches at Kearsney, culminating in the FNB Classic Clash between Kearsney and DHS.

In many a year this would have been a great, unpredictable battle but this year the signs are that Kearsney will win well.

Kearsney play top opposition and are knocking on the door for a place in the FNB Top 20. Their best result was a 26-25 victory over Glenwood.

The schools each have three opponents in common – Glenwood, Northwood and St Charles. Kearsney beat Glenwood but Glenwood beat DHS 46-14. They both beat St Charles – Kearsney 55-0, DHS 25-10. The fixture between Northwood and DHS was called off because of the weather. But they played  in a shortened game in the festival at Kings Park when Northwood won 8-3. Kearsney beat Northwood 30-0.

Kearsney have lost only one match this season – against the powerful Paarl Gim side who beat themn 33-6. DHS lost to Maritzburg College (38-11), Parktown (33-5), Westville (42-3) and Glenwood. Their wins have been over Port Natal (28-25) who lost to Hilton 2nd XV last week, Clifton and St Charles.

The KZN team for Craven Week has six players from Kearsney, DHS one. The Du Preez brothers both played SA Schools last year. They are the sons of Springbok Robert du Preez and in the Craven Week side this year is Matthew Reece-Edwards, the son of Springbok Hugh. The other Kearsney players going to Craven Week are flyhalf Tristan Tedder, eighthman Ayron Schramm and hooker Jordan Meaker. Flyhalf Kurt Webster is the sole DHS player in the Craven Week side.

All of this suggests that Botha’s Hill is a high mountain that DHS have to climb.

    Teams

Kearsney: 15 Chris lines, 14 Josh Attenborough, 13 Blaire Cremer, 12 Tyler Smith, 11 Ryan van der Waal, 10 Tristan Tedder, 9 Matt Reece-Edwards, 8 Ayron Schramm, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Jarred Hayes-Hill, 5 Daniel du Preez (captain), 4 Mitch du Toit, 3 Mthokozisi Moloi, 2 Jordan Meaker, 1 Tijde Visser

  • Preview – Alexandria vs. Ukhanyo

On Friday afternoon in the farming town of Alexandria, not quite a hundred kilometres north of Port Elizabeth, there will be a classic clash between the two schools in the town – Alexandria High school and Ukhanyo high School.

The area roundabout farms predominantly chicory, the biggest area in South Africa for growing the coffee substitute. It distributes chicory products to coffee manufacturers around South Africa – dried, roasted and as liquid extract.

The boys at the two schools will come from different backs grounds, those at Alexandria High better off than those at Ukhanyo in the township. The expectation seems to be that Alexandria will win but there is always in this kind of match, pressure of television, pressure of community and the fear of defeat, that which can produce a surprise.

There are  in the two teams only three players in the 30 players who are in matric. All three are in the Alexandria side, none in the  Ukhanyo side.

The matches start at Alexandria High at noon on Friday with a the main match at 15:15.

    The teams:

Alexandria: 15 Flinn Cannon,  14 Charlton Coetzee, 13 Ruwayne Julius, 12 Harry Miles, 11 Earl Maarman, 10 Fazel Jacobs, 9 Sherwin Cannon, 8 Innocent Mamase, 7 Lee-Roy Coeries, 6 Craig Jacobs, 5 Lyle Hendricks, 4 Dewald Jacobs, 3 Marcel May, 2 Rafael Gongqoba, 1 Cornelius Scheepers. Replacements: 16 Zane Els, 17 Joshua Bam, 18 Jovan van Rooyen, 19 Embrose Cannon, 20 Sithembile Mzukisi, 21 Luvuyo Ngene, 22 Johan Redelinghuys.

Ukhanyo: 15 Siphamandla Petse, 14 Lwandiso Gqamani, 13 Azola Mgoduka, 12 Siyabulela Ntantiso, 11 Athenkosi Matebese, 10 Luvo Dyantyi, 9 Mphumezi Magobiyana, 8 Athenkosi Boto, 7 Mayinje Siyasanga, 6 Sinabo Gongqoba, 5 Skade Anele, 4 Sokutu Thabo, 3 Athenkosi Gongqoba, 2 Sinoxolo Mayinje, 1 Maginxha Sphamandla. Replacements: 16 Sibabalu Soya, 17 Sivuyile Manzana, 18 Akhona Sqoto, 19 Gcobani Tulman, 20 Masixole Mosi, 21 Thembinkosi Genge, 22 Vukile Mbolekwa.

  • Preview – HTS Sasolburg vs. Hoërskool Sasolburg

The town will be divided in two for the FNB Classic Clash between HTS Sasolburg and Hoërskool Sasolburg – the sixth such Classic Clash, the 34th derby between the two schools.

Sasolburg High leads 3-2 in the Classic Clashes, winning 29-15 last year. And they have the makings of a good side again this year, after beating two neighbours, Afrikaanse Hoer Sasol and Vanderbijlpark (45-0).  HTS – the Spanners – have beaten Parys, Welkom High and De Anker, drew with Carel de Wet and lost to Heilbron and Overvaal, the latter 69-0.

This in the Free State warmth, in a town where coal becomes oil and byproducts, this could just be a tough and exciting match with Sasolburg High perhaps the favourites in that they are higher on the log than the Spanners.   The match could well be a case of rapier against broadsword. The Sasolburg High side has only three matrics while the Spanners are more mature. The Spanners are heavier and stronger up front but the High School’s backs are quicker. It may be a match decided by the willingness of spirit and flesh.

    The teams:

HTS Sasolburg: 15 Neo Makekeng, 14 Jacques Coetzer, 13 Rudi Cilliers, 12 Roehan Botes, 11 Pieter de Ru, 10 Kenny Pheleu, 9 Juandre Pretorius, 8 Tiaan Engelbrecht, 7 Kingsley Mahlangu, 6 Piet Mokoena, 5 Gerrie Rautenbach, 4 James Gouws, 3 Tobie Vosloo, 2 Heinrich van Tonder, 1 Juhan Lodewyk. Replacements: 16 Sonquezo Mofase, 17 Christiaan Dippenaar, 18 Riaan Nel, 19 Victor Kambula, 20 Tyron du Plooy, 21 Pieter van Rensburg, 22 Mpho Lesoli

Hoërskool Sasolburg: 15 Stefan Cilliers, 14 Jarred Dawson, 13 Ruan Viljoen, 12 Tshiamo Sebolai, 11 Vusi Cele, 10 Frikkie Oosthuizen, 9 Dewald Hanekom, 8 Rudolph van Deventer, 7 Sean-Dean du Plessis, 6 Katleho Baisang, 5 Hannes Neethling, 4 Stefan Bester, 3 Gustav Vogel, 2 Teboho Mkhotho, 1 Jacques Viljoen. Replacements: 16 Francois Coetzee, 17 Johan Kok, 19 Thadeus van Onsselen, 20 Bongi Zwane, 21 Joel Mbisha, 22 Francois Groenewald, 23 Wynand Meyer.

    Kick-off: 14:30

  • Preview – Transvalia vs. Vereeniging Gimnasium

Preview – Transvalia vs. Vereeniging Gimnasium

Transvalia of Vanderbijlpark plays host to Vereeniging Gimnasium in an FNB Classic Clash on Saturday. It is a new experience and yet not really so new.

Vereeniging Gimnasium is a new school, and yet not really so new. Towards the end of last year, a new school was born – Vereeniging Gimnasium out of the amalgamation of HTS Vereeniging and Hoërskool Vereeniging, a bigger and stronger school.

Before this Valia played HTS Vereeniging, the Tekkies, in FNB Classic Clashes and beat them three years in a row though last year they had to come from behind to win 24-20.

This year they are both strong sides who play top sides. They have each played three teams who are currently on the FNB Top 20. They have each lost all three but Transvalia ran Nelspruit close, losing 24-21 and Vereeniging Gim lost by just one point to Centurion – 28-27.

They have both played Rustenburg and Florida. Transvalia beat Rustenburg 34-14 while Vereeniging Gim won 33-22. The Florida results were a big difference. Transvalia won 17-15 while Vereeniging Gim lost 31-17.

It will be a good and enthusiastic day in perfect weather.

    The teams:

  • Preview – Pietersburg HS vs. Ben Vorster

Saturday sees the second FNB Classic Clash between Ben Vorster of Tzaneen and Pietersburg Hoërskool of Polokwane, without much doubt the two strongest sides in Limpopo.

Both teams had seasons of varying success so far. Ben Vorster started theirs with a big victory (50-7) over Standerton (2012’s Big Schools Beeld Trophy champions) in the PUK Interprovincial series, only to go down 32-29 against Montana in Pretoria a week later. As things turned out, Standerton is much weaker this year than previously, suffering an equal beating from Montana. Montana on the other hand proved to be a much improved team, going on to win the PUK series (easily disposing of Lichtenburg), Ben Vorster having to settle for 3rd place by easily beating Frikkie Meyer of Thabazimbi (44-20).

Ben Vorster had mixed success at the Bizhub Festival in Durban, unexpectedly losing to Die Anker (21-35), narrowly losing to Die Brandwag (8-10), but having the better of Stellenberg (28-21).

In between these games Ben Vorster scraped home against Bastion (24-22) in an away game and played poorly at home against Menlopark, losing 35-7.

Pietersburg played in the much tougher Nupower series, suffering losses against Centurion (29-45), Monument (22-50), Vereeniging Gym (0-21) and Klerksdorp (18-36), with a 20-20 draw against Marais Viljoen for the last place play off.

They attended the Oakdale Festival with equally mixed results, narrowly losing to Hugenote of Wellington (15-19), a narrow but credible win over Voortrekker of Betlehem (8-5) and losing heavily against Sentraal of Bloemfontein (8-36).

They scraped a 25-24 away win against Merensky (who is not the force they used to be) and lost at home to Affies 2nd team (19-27).

The two teams have one opponent in common, which could be a pointer of what to expect. Ben Vorster played Helpmekaar College away, narrowly winning a thrilling match by 31-28. Pietersburg played Helpmekaar at home, losing 5-41.

With that in mind and the game being played in Tzaneen, one would expect Ben Vorster to take this one, but it can’t be taken for granted.

The match will be filmed and shown on television on Saturday night and subsequent to that.

    The teams:

Pietersburg: 15 Ruan Steynberg, 14 Pietman Pieterse, 13 Arno v Staden, 12 Jaco Retief (k), 11 Muller Coetzee, 10 Hardus Geldenhuys, 9 Nick Enslin, 8 Juandre Viljoen, 7 Vince Fibiger, 6 Jacques de Lange, 5 JR Visagie, 4 Johan Murray (Tokkie), 3 Erick Snyman, 2 Wiaan Pretorius (Tjoopie) (o/k), 1 Jacques Lister. Replacements: 16 Armand Moorcroft, 17 PJ Malan, 18 Biemond Hoogenboezem, 19 Francois Rousseau, 20 Friederich Cilliers, 21 Ansten Mokgokolo, 22 Lehan Viljoen, 23 Komape Moloto, 24 Arno Maree

Ben Vorster: 15 Leroy Ndlovu, 14 Floyd Ntimane, 13 Adriaan Maebane (captain), 12 Jinx Molapo, 11 Tshepiso Mahasha, 10 Andries Bruwer, 9 Theo Maree, 8 Erik van Niekerk, 7 Christopher Durow (vice-captain), 6 Theo Mahlo, 5 CR McSeveny, 4 Nico Bezuidenhout, 3 Magau Mabokela, 2 Mitch Mametja, 1 Madot Mabukela. Replacements: 16 Mauritz Joubert, 17 Allan Mhlanga, 18 Rossouw Kruger, 19 Diederik Oberholzer, 20 B J Vorster, 21 Vukosi Mabuza, 22 Surpise Mathabela

Griekwas-platteland; 10:20: Griffons Akademie t. Griekwas Akademie; 11:40: Grens-platteland t. Oostelike Provinsie-platteland; 13:00: Vrystaat Akademie t. Grens Akademie; 14:20: Griffons t. Griekwas; 15:40: Vrystaat t. Grens.

  • Affies beat Klofies in the dying seconds

Waterkloof and Affies have played against each other 38 times since 1987 but this match came after a break and Affies ere made to work hard to beat an impressive Waterkloof side 19-18,scoring the winning points with only a few seconds of playing time left on the clock.

Waterkloof showed from the outset that they were here for business and dominated in the scrums while Affies team’s performance was strewn with errors.

Affies scored the first try in this match by left wing, Thys van Wyk, after about 10 minutes of play. The Affie captain and scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl’s conversion from the sidelines hit the upright but nevertheless tumbled over the crossbar giving Affies a 7-0 lead over Klofies.

Less than five minutes later, Waterkloof’s prop Johan van Wyk found a gap in the Affie defense and scored a try, which flyhalf Tinus de Beer converted.

Waterkloof wing Dewald Lindeque placed his team in the lead just before halftime with a try. Tinus de Beer missed the conversion and two penalties in first half. Nevertheless, Waterkloof was in the lead with a 12-7 score during halftime.

Affies dominated the second half with possession and launched an attack on the Waterkloof try-line. However, the Affie team’s handling errors thwarted their efforts.

Klofie Thinus de Beer scored the first points for the second half after about 20 minutes of play when Waterkloof were awarded a penalty in front of the poles. It looked as if Waterkloof had a comfortable lead of 15-7 at this stage.

Affies subsequent attempt to score a try was again stopped by brutal defending from the Waterkloof side.

Waterkloof flyhalf Tinus de Beer did not roll away after a tackle and was caught with his hand in a loose ruck. He’s received a yellow card and had to leave the field. The Klofie team was not discouraged and kept on defending their try-line but with just 14 men on the field could not stop a spirited Affie Tiaan Schmulian’s try in the corner.

The try kept Affies within striking distance at 12-15. Klofie flyhalf Tinus de Beer had another opportunity at the rugby posts and with a few minutes of playing time over Waterkloof was in the lead with 18-12.

Affies showed character in the last seconds. Eduan Keyter after a relentless onslaught on the try line, found a gap in the Klofie defence and scored a try between the posts. Van Zyl converted the try giving Affies a single point to snatch victory away from Klofies.

Klofies flyhalf Tinus de Beer was oustanding; he was a thorn in the Affies’ side. His tactical kicking and attacking flair made him a constant threat. Waterkloof twins, the flanks Sean and David Joyce, were like ‘terrible twins’ on the day, and played excellent rugby. When they left the field with injuries the Klofie side struggled.

Affie’s star player was: left wing, Thys van Wyk who also scored a brilliant try.

Grey PE on top against St. Andrew’s College

The St Andrew’s College team faced a stern test on Saturday as they took on Grey High School from Port Elizabeth. The match drew a large crowd and the setting was perfect for this big derby.

The match started at a frantic pace as Grey High School repelled an early St Andrew’s College attack and then launched into phase after phase of attack of their own. The Grey side was magnificent in attack moving the ball and creating width as they produced what seemed to be an almost flawless first 20 minutes.

By the time the dust had settled St Andrew’s College were well and truly behind the eight ball as Grey High School had run in three magnificent tries during the period and St Andrew’s College had hardly touched the ball. Finally St Andrew’s College got their hands on the ball and with the score at 19-0 threw everything they had at the Grey High School side. But the Grey High School defence held firm as St Andrew’s College got held agonisingly close on a number of occasions. Just before half-time Grey High School forced a penalty and duly converted to stretch their half time lead to 22-0.

The second half started with Grey holding all the cards, the St Andrew’s College side would have to throw caution to the wind if they wished to pull this one out of the fire. Unfortunately this led to more uncharacteristic mistakes by an under-par St Andrew’s College side that allowed Grey High School to continue dictating play in the second half and it would be Grey who drew first blood capitalising on a St Andrew’s College error to break away and score stretching their lead to 29-0.

This seemed to awaken St Andrew’s College from their slumber and they started to string some better passages of play together. First Tyler Paul would barge over from the back of a driving maul to narrow the lead. However all the hard work had come to nothing as minutes later Grey High School would scoop up yet another dropped St Andrew’s College pass and sprint away to restore their lead. Grey High School kicked another penalty before St Andrew’s College claimed another consolation try through eighthman Stuart Stopforth.

The final score was 14-39 to Grey High School, deserved winners on a day when they produced some outstanding rugby. I am sure the St Andrew’s College side will bounce back as they are certainly a better team than the performance they produced on Saturday.
