St. Benedict’s push Pretoria Boys’ Hig

On Saturday 18 May St Benedict’s College hosted Pretoria Boys High School in a full fixture. Springs Boys High School were invited along to help fill up the fixture which saw 27 well matched and highly competitive games taking place.

The main fixture of the day saw St. Benedict’s College 1st XV take on the highly praised and ranked Pretoria Boys High School 1st XV. This fixture has become highly competitive in the past two seasons with PBHS winning 8-5 in 2011 and 26-19 in 2012. This is a fixture that the Bedfordview boys prize highly each year as PBHS is the only big boys in Gauteng the school is yet to taste victory against.

For the second week in a row a minute’s silence was witnessed, this time for PBHS lock Gideon van der Bergh whose father tragically passed away in the week.

The game started at a frantic pace, with the boys from Pretoria hitting their straps early and piling on the pressure. The pressure soon told with their big outside centre crossing the line, only to drop the ball over the line. This let off seemed to be only temporary as soon after the restart PBHS were straight back on attack. This time they made no mistake in dotting down to lead 12-0. The Bennies boys however showed a never-say-die attitude and soon found themselves on attack and placing the Pretoria boys under pressure. A side like Boys High are however not easily flustered and simply absorbed the pressure, before scoring another try to extend their lead to 17-0. Many in the crowd began to think that the Bennies Boys were in for a serious rugby lesson but this simply spurred them on. This resilience soon saw them cross the line to narrow the gap to 5-17.

However soon after this. the referee deemed a tackle by the St Benedict’s eighth man Nyasha Tarusenga to be dangerous and sent him to the bin for 10 minutes. Playing against 14 men, PBHS lifted their game to score once again and extend their lead to 22-5. Just before the break Tarusenga was reintroduced and had a helping hand in a try to right wing Senkie Mafuma. Matthew Smit converted from the touchline to end the half 22-12 in favour of Pretoria Boys High.

The second half began just as the first did with PBHS straight onto the attack, and the Bedfordview boys were struggling to deal with the impressive PBHS rolling maul. This saw an enthralling first 20 minutes to the half with some determined Bennies defence holding the Pretoria boys at bay and both side scoring points to have the game evenly balanced 25-19 with 20 minutes left.

Then the drama began, Boys High put together numerous phases in the St Benedict’s half. A professional foul by TT Tsotesi, St Benedict’s left wing, saw him receive his 10 minutes in the bin. There were no guesses as to what the PBHS were going to do from the resultant penalty. They put it in the corner and watched as their pack mauled well once again to extend the lead to 32-19. It was all hands on deck now for the Bennies boys and they dug deep putting the Boys High side under pressure once again with wave after wave of attack. The pressure soon told and resulted in a professional foul by Boys High deep in there 22m. Quick thinking by Chris Worthington saw him cross the line for St Benedict’s with numerous defenders on his back. Matthew Smit stood up to slot the crucial conversion that would make it a six point game with only ten minutes left on the clock, however his conversion hit the upright to leave the score at 32-24.

The Boys High pack once again kicked into gear and scored once again from a rolling maul to put the game out of site at 24-39 with only minutes left to play. St Benedict’s went straight back on attack and managed another try through wing Senkie Mafuma to close the game to 31-39 with a minute left to play. Pretoria Boys kicked deep and kept the Bennies Boys deep in their half. This did not stop the boys in white still having a go and with time up they still attempted to run at Boys High defence. This resulted in a chip and chase that went wrong – Boys High simply kicked it out to end the contest at 31-39 in favour of Pretoria Boys High.

  • Secunda bo teen Oosterland

In doie eerstespan wedstryd he Sewcunda 32-8 gewen.

Laasjaar was daar na ‘n ses-jaar onderbreking by Oosterland gespeel.

  • Florida flush out Marais Viljoen

    Florida flush out Marais Viljoen

Hoërskool Florida went into their FNB Classic Clash against Marais Viljoen as clear favourites and managed to win the match 34-15 win on Saturday – although it was not entirely convincing.

When one looks back at the last result in this fixture Florida ropmed home to a 60-point win so this was a much better showing from Marais Viljoen.
Despite being behind 3-0 shortly after kick off Florida hit back with a try with great follow up play from captain Arne’ Bognich after a penalty attempt by Erwin Harris hit the pole and he crashed over for a try to take the score to 7-3.

Harris then slotted a long rang Penalty to take the score to 10-3. Florida started picking up momentum and shortly afterwards Morne’ Strydom went over for his try after some good forward play. Florida went into half time leading 17 – 10.
The second half started slowly with both teams defending and attacking well. But the second half belonged to Jako Barnard finishing off two tries one of them from his own 22 after great distibution from Ruhann Ferreira. Erwin Harris had a great day with the boot converting all four tries and two penalties only hitting the post once.
We always look forward to the fixture against Marais Viljoen and they showed guts coming from last years defeat to prove a point. It always produces hard, entertaining rugby played in a great spirit.

A number of tries were scored in the fixture and both sides were willing to use the ball as Marais Viljoen ran in two tries in their 15 points that they scored on the day.

Florida have enjoyed a much more successful season this year than their rivals and so they would have hoped for a better performance but a win is a win and they, ultimately, did win by nearly 20 points.

    The scorers:

    For Marais Viljoen:
    Tries: Marias, Smit
    Con: Roos

  • Waterkloof beats Garsies in epic battle

Klofies first rugby team won Garsies on Saturday after Waterkloof experienced three losses in a row. The match could have gone anyway. Waterkloof won Garsies 36 – 34 in a very tight match. The match was played in front of a crowd of about 5000 spectators. Garsfontein had some old scores to settle. Their first team never managed to win a match against Waterkloof yet.

Waterkloof’s forwards, coached by Burger Lindeque, is formidable pack and they managed to win the game with brilliant defense and break down balls. Waterkloof’s loose head prop and tight head prop Xander and Johan van Wyk was brilliant in the scrums. The two flankers Sean and David Joyce tackled ferociously and played fearlessly.

Garsfontein drew first blood when big lock Hyron Andrews scored their first try. Klofies flyhalf Tinus de Beer replied with a penalty kick. Waterkloof took the lead with a few minutes left on the clock in the first half when center Peet de Klerk scored a try and Tinus kicked over the conversion.

Garsfontein kept their cool and in the dying minutes of the first half when Franco Naude capitalized on Klofies bad handling of the ball and scored a try.

The second half started with Garsfonteins hooker Blokkies de Jongh scoring a try. Wing Dewald Lindeque of Waterkloof answered and also scored a try. Both teams made a lot of handling errors in the second half. But, made up for it in the last 15 minutes of the match. Garsfontein started playing the match with a fast pace and Marquit September scored a try. Garsfontein lost a player in the backline with a yellow card this disrupted Garsfonteins game.

Nothing seemed to disturb Waterkloof and they slowly but surely took control of the game with Wilbri Gunter and Tinus de Beer scoring tries. Garsfontein did not give up and Hyron Andrews scored another try. In the dying minutes Waterkloof put a lot of pressure on Garsfontein and with one minute remaining prop Johan van Wyk scored a try to grab the victory out of Garsfonteins hands. Tinus de Beer remained calm under pressure and kicked the winning points.

  • Kearsney College thrash St. Stithian’s College

St Stithians hosted Kearsney in Saturday’s ideal rugby conditions in Randburg, Gauteng. Kearsney dominated play from the start but poor ball control and many handling errors prevented the visitors from scoring any points early in the match. Captain Matt Reece-Edwards sparked the fire with a brilliant individual run of 60m from a break at the tail of the line out. Tristian Tedder converted for a 7-nil lead.

Four minutes later he managed another break, to feed Dan du Preez who made good yardage before passing to his brother, Jean-Luc du Preez. When tackled just short of the line, JL flipped the ball back to brother Daniel, who scored under the posts, for Tedder to convert.

The Saints players defended with everything they had and restricted the score to 14-nil at halftime.

Eight tries were scored in the second half, the first from flanker Jarred Hayes-Hill following a line out drive which Tedder converted. Hooker Jordan Meaker then collected the ball from the resulting kick-off and ran a good 20m from where the ball went wide. Blair Cremer carried it well before off- loading to winger Ryan van der Waal to score in the left-hand corner.

Saints pressed hard from the kick-off and enjoyed some rare time in the visitors 22 but lost possession and Cremer collected and sprinted 70m for the first of his two tries and a 36-nil lead.

Kearsney responded immediately from the kick-off, when Hayes-Hill collected to feed Tedder who found fullback Chris Lines linking well at pace, and put Van der Waal in for his second try of the afternoon. Again Tedder converted, taking the score to 43-0.

Ayron Schramm scored the next try from an opted scrum, combining well with the two halfbacks for Tedder to convert. Dan du Preez then scored his second try from running a good line loose to the ruck for Tedder to convert.

Fittingly the captain scored his second and the final try of the match from a counter attack started by Dan du Preez and Lines which fixed the defending fullback and passing to the always present scrum half.

Outstanding performers for Kearsney were Reece Edwards, the Du Preez twins, Schramm, Hayes Hill, Meaker, Tedder and Cremer.

  • Schoonspruit rule the wheatlands

In a thrilling FNB Classic Clash Hoërskool Schoonspruit of Malmesbury beat Hoërskool Piketberg from just down the road 24-23, thanks to a try in the last action of the match.

Schools matches of this class are 35 minutes each way. In the last four minutes of this match the score went from 19-17 for Schoonspruit to 20-19 and then 23-19 for Piketberg and finally 24-23 to Schoonspruit.

No wonder the crowds, in big numbers supporting both sides, were noisily excited. For Schoonspruit it was a perfect ending to a perfect day under blue skies amongst the mountains of the Cape.

Before the match the schools each sang their song and toasted each other and then Piketberg kicked off. They kicked off deep and Schoonspruit started running. The player who set them running was flyhalf Anzo Stubbs, a special player who had played centre for Boland Schools at Craven Weeks in 2011 and 2012. He won’t be playing this year as he recently turned 19. What a star!

In the match Schoonspruit were generally livelier, quicker to react. But both sides were guilty of faulty handling and both sides conceded many turnovers.

Stubbs got Schoonspruit running from the kick-off and they were stopped 10 metres or so from the Piketberg line. But Schoonspruit were on the attack as Stubbs broke again and lock Tembelani Matiwani forced his way over under the posts. 7-0 after 2 minutes.

Again Schoonspruit ran from the kick-off and then they counterattacked and then Stubbs broke and chipped. It was all Schoonspruit as Piketberg could not get their hands on the ball. When they did they proved their worth as tall flyhalf Stephan Breunissen broke beating three till Wayde Pieters tackled him just short of the line. Schoonspruit were penalised under their posts but Piketberg tapped and charged. They lost the ball forward and Schoonspruit cleared. After that they kicked penalty attempts at go all.

In the first half Schoonspruit were penalised eight times, Schoonspruit not once. In the match over all Schoonspruit conceded 13 penalties to four. Of the 13 penalties, 11 were at the tackle.

Breunissen goaled two of the penalties. 7-6 after 22 minutes.

Piketberg’s left wing was clearly fast and skilful. He was good on defence and fast on attack., When Devon Smith broke Stander saved and cleared and then hooker Erich Kankowski gave him a perfect pass. Stander raced away from his marker and then swerved inside for a brilliant try. 11-7 after 32 minutes.

A Breunissen penalty at the start of the second half stretched the lead to 14-7.

Schoonspruit counterattacked and Matiwani was close but knocked on trying to ground the ball for the try. Piketberg cleared but Mishaun Arendse kicked and chased and forced a five-metre scrum. From the scrum eighthman Cheslyn Korasie broke. He was tackled but the ball went to Stubbs who cut back against the tide and scored an excellent try to make the score 14-all after 45 minutes.

Breunissen restored Piketberg’s lead with a penalty four minutes later and Schoonspruit speeded the game up. Stubbs chipped and chased. Piketberg were penalised twice and Matiwani tapped and charged. The ball came back to scrumhalf Gertwill le Fleur under pressure. Somehow he got away from one and then with dazzling footwork beat two defenders before celebrating his try with a swanky dive. 19-17 to Schoonspruit after 57 minutes.

That was the score going into the last 10 minutes but Breunissen, from a long way out at an acute angled, unleashed a soaring drop at goal,. which was over. 20-19 to Piketberg with 7 minutes to play. Then he goaled a penalty. 23-19 with 4 minutes to play.

It was a hectic four minutes. Schoonspruit ran a maul from a line-out and Piketberg were penalised. Arendse tapped on the far right, a ruck formed and Schoonspruit went far left where Korasie had an overlap and raced over for the try that won the match. The conversion hit the upright but it did not matter as the final whistle went, producing much glee in the Schoonspruit camp.

It was Piketberg’s first defeat of the year. They were glum.

    Scorers:

    For Schoonspruit:
Tries: Tembelani Matiwani, Anzo Stubbs, Gertwill le Fleur, Cheslyn Korasie

Fichies se hulpafrigter, Diaan Neethling was in 2008 kaptein van Sannies se eerstespan.

Vandag se bepalings is (tuisspanne eerste vermeld):

    10:30: Reitz t. Harrismith; 10:50: Cherries t. Louis Botha; 11:20: Hoërskool Bloemfontein t. Zastron; 12:00: Ficksburg t. Vrede; 12:00: Hentie Cilliers t. Witteberg; 12:15: Riebeeckstad t. Hennenman; 12:15: Theunissen t. Sandveld; 12:20: Bothaville t. Wessel Maree; 12:30: St. Alban-kollege t. St. Andrew; 13:10: Sentraal t. Grey-kollege; 13:10: Sand du Plessis t. Fichardtpark.
