  • Preview – SACS vs. Bishops

The South African College High School (SACS) travel down the road the Diocesan College (Bishops) on Saturday. The two teams are thought to have first played each other in 1863, 150 years-ago, making this the oldest recorded rugby match in South Africa. SACS may be the oldest school in South Africa but the Bishops rugby heritage is massive, having amongst other things given their colours to the Springboks.
Bishops have been one of the top rugby schools in South Africa for the past three decades, perennially appearing in the Top 20 rankings. Having been the envy of all of their Southern Suburb rivals for a long time, 2012 saw them have a poor season by their high standards. One bad season in thirty years would seem an acceptable return to most but memories are short in the age of instant gratification and the swords were out in no time when Bishops lost to both SACS and Wynberg (home and away) in 2012.
This year coach Dave Mallett has assembled a good squad of players and has trimmed down his coaching team (Kevin Foote having left for the Western Force) and their results have been reasonably good thus far. They have won all the games they should have and have been desperately unlucky on a number of occasions. A draw to Paul Roos away (22-all) was followed by a loss to Paarl Boishaai, 22-18 (having led 18-8 with ten minutes to play). Their other defeat was to Pretoria Boy’s High when it seemed for all money as if flank Wesley White has scored a legitimate try to win them the game.
Like all good Bishops teams over the years this side has a potent back-three who can punish opponents on the counter-attack. Similarly Bishop’s loose-forwards have always been a key component of their running brand of rugby and this year in Wesley White they have a hard, abrasive flank whose style is perfectly complemented by the free-running No. 8 Suad Abrahams. Abrahams, who went to SACS Junior, is a potential game breaker who will have to be closely marked.
In Herman Share Bishops have a very talented flyhalf who has the ability to vary his play. Unlike many of his predecessors he has the ability to kick for position should the conditions or the situation require it, while his running and passing game is equally impressive. His kick-offs are something to behold and the Piley Rees field hasn’t seen such skyscrapers since the days of Herschelle Gibbs.
SACS have played two of the same opponents as Bishops. SACS also lost narrowly to Pretoria Boy’s High at the St. Stithians Easter Festival but copped a hiding at home two weeks ago from Paul Roos. SACS have no real stars and rely on a solid structure and good team spirit to pull them through. Lock Dean Basson has carried the ball well this year but SACS will miss his sidekick, hooker Struan Murray, who is out injured. Shane Fourie has kicked well at poles this year and has enabled SACS to regularly convert pressure into points.
These local derbies are usually won the team who makes fewer mistakes and is hungrier on the day. Having lost to SACS the last three times they have played, the last time by a record score at home, Bishops will not lack for motivation. For their part, SACS will want to try and build on their recent successes against their close rivals. It promises to be a highly charged encounter. May rugby be the winner!

  • Battle of Potchefstroom

    Battle of Potchefstroom

HTS Potchefstroom will be out to win bragging rights back when they travel to Potchefstroom Boys High on Saturday.

HTS Potchefstroom were beaten at home by their local rivals last year, so they will be out for revenge when they make the short trip across town for the FNB Classic Clash.

The rivalry extends back over 40 years, and was dominated for a long time by HTS Potchefstroom, but Potchefstroom Boys High have proven tougher customers in recent years and honours have been fairly even since the fixture was made a Classic Clash eight years ago.

The hosts have a large forward pack and will aim to dominate up front in order to catch the speedy HTS backline on the back foot, so the visitors should have their work cut out for them in the tight exchanges.

If HTS are allowed some space, then they could well make their hosts pay as according tpo their captain and inside centre Bigboy Dinkibogile they have a point to prove this weekend.

However, the weather is forecast to be wet, so the big Potchefstroom Boys High pack could come into their own in the soggy conditions which may inhibit the opposition’s backline strength.

    The teams:

    Potchefstroom Boys High: 15 N Mogale, 14 M Mphahlele, 13 O Molekane, 12 T Mokhobo, 11 M Mmutle, 10 S Booi, 9 M Motsikwa, 8 T Tsheko, 7 K Mathibe, 6 K Mathekga, 5 M Makubela, 4 O Molotsi, 3 T Kanye, 2 K Ramarola, 1 N Thekiso.
    Replacements: 16 K Mohapi, 17 R Lekaba, 18 M Jood, 19 R Fish, 20 N Phosa, 21 M Kotsedi, 22 R Molapisi.

HTS Potchefstroom: 15 Moosa Mphai, 14 Findo Mdiza, 13 Junior Mosia, 12 Big boy Dinkebogile (captain), 11 Dolfie Britton, 10 Katle Leokaoke, 9 Jonny Kekana, 8 Laurens Ramoola, 7 Maxwell Maine, 6 Gorata Kodisang, 5 Danand Smith, 4 Boitomelo Bogatsu, 3 Thabang Mofokeng, 2 Petrus Matsidiso, 1 Khotso Motale.
Replacements: 16 Kagiso Tshakane, 17 Thato Masike, 18 Olobogeng Majeng, 19 Adrian Human, 20 Alex Meyer, 21 Ollie Nokana, 22 Ofentse Magape.

    Date: Saturday, May 11
    Venue: Potchefstroom Boys High
Expected weather: Mostly cloudy with showers, high of 17

  • Noord-Kaap verdedig trotse tuisrekord teen Klofies

Noord-Kaap verdedig trotse tuisrekord teen Klofies

HTS Middelburg: 15 Michael Chabant, 14 Allen Muller, 13 Lourens Basson, 12 George Fritz, 11 Ruan du Plooy, 10 Lohan Bennet, 9 Rowan Gouws, 8 Christo de Jager, 7 Waldo Morris, 6 Willandré Kotzenberg, 5 Michael Basson, 4 Petrus du Busson, 3 Stephan Liebenberg, 2 Nelius Smit, 1 JP Zaayman.

Hoërskool Nelspruit: 15 Jesse du Toit, 14 Ruan Nel, 13 Kabous Engelbrecht, 12 Helgard Viljoen, 11 Mauro Bucuchae, 10 Waldo Putter, 9 Christiaan Erasmus, 8 Menzi Nhlabathi, 7 Bendré Heroldt, 6 Daniël Maartens, 5 Riaan le Roux, 4 Gert Aggenbach, 3 Conraad van Vuuren, 2 Jaco Vosloo, 1 Ben-Chris Badenhorst.

  • SA U20 team named to face Namibia

SA U20 team named to face Namibia

The SA Under-20 side to face the senior Namibia rugby team on Saturday on Stellenbosch was announced on Wednesday in Cape Town.

Kick off time is 14h50 at the Paul Roos Markötter Stadium and the match will be played after the traditional Cape schoolboy derby between Paul Roos and Paarl Gymnasium.

Although several players will miss the clash because of injury, Vodacom Blue Bulls flanker Ruan Steenkamp will still lead a starting fifteen that includes the exciting attacking talents of Robert du Preez (flyhalf) Seabelo Senatla (wing),

Justin Geduld (centre) and Cheslin Kolbe (fullback).

The players who were not considered because of injury are Hanco Venter (scrumhalf), Handré Pollard (flyhalf), Dries Swanepoel (centre), Jan Serfontein (centre) and Sergeal Petersen (wing).

The match is the last outing for the Junior Springboks before they embark on their IRB Junior World Championship journey to defend their title next month year in France.

Dawie Theron, the SA U20 coach, said he was looking forward to see the Junior Springboks in action.

“Namibia will pose a huge physical challenge, which will be very good for our boys. We need another good workout before we leave for France and this match will give us a wonderful opportunity to test our various combinations,” said Theron.

Theron said that despite the several injuries amongst the backs, his team still packs some very good firepower in the attacking department.

“We are really fortunate to have such big a pool of very good attacking players and I am really excited and looking to see them in action. However, the backs can only play display their true potential if the forwards do their job,” added Theron.

The team will have one more training session on Thursday morning before moving camp to Stellenbosch in the afternoon.

Kearsney played with the wind behind them in the first half and this enabled them to be on the front foot for most of the 35 minutes, where three converted tries were scored. The scrums were evenly contested with Michaelhouse shading the line outs mainly due to some good work by stand- in captain, Chris Schoeman. It was the superior backline that helped Kearsney and with the loose forwards winning the loose ball, Kearsney had the better of possession and territory.

Their reward came with a try from winger Ryan van der Waal, scored in the right hand corner from a backline rehearsed move. Flyhalf Tristan Tedder featured prominently in this play and aptly converted for a 7 – 0 lead. The next try came from lock Dan du Preez who has returned to the Kearsney 1st XV following an injury and a long layoff. The visitors forward pack mauled and were making their way out of their 22 when prop Mthunzi Moloi successfully ripped the ball from a MHS player to feed Du Preez, who showed a good turn of pace and outstanding evasive skills to score next to the right hand upright. Tedder added the two points.

The visitors fought back well during the latter part of the half but Kearsney scored again through the ever alert eighth man Ayron Schramm, pounced on a loose ball from a lineout and dived over. Tedder again converted for a halftime score of 21 – 0.

Kearsney faced an ever increasing headwind in the second half and battled with their territorial kicks. Michaelhouse soon capitalised with a deserving but unconverted try by prop Chris Whiting after some very good forward play.

Soon afterwards Kearsney scored through lock Mitch du Toit from a lineout maul which Tedder masterly converted in very difficult conditions. With a 28 – 5 lead the hosts now played with confidence and scored again within five minutes. Jean-Luc du Preez collected a ball from a lineout and after a 30 metres run offloaded to Schramm. From the ensuing breakdown the backs took the ball wide and when tackled, scrumhalf Matt Reece-Edwards sniped around the fringes to score. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Kearsney applied relentless pressure on the visitors and in the 32nd minute was awarded a centre scrum close to the opposing the ball went through a number of hands to Schramm for his second try.

Michaelhouse, missing six regulars due tro injuries never gave up on their efforts despite Kearsney dominance particularly amongst the backs.
