    Match reports

    Blue Bulls (21) 41 Griquas (10) 24

Hosts the Blue Bulls ended the Week on a high note with a deserved win over Griquas in which they scored six tries to four. The Blue Bulls led 21-10 at the break. They made a perfect start to the match, running in two tries in the first eight minutes, both scored by fullback Pieter van der Walt and converted by flyhalf Juan-Claude Roos to lead 14-0. Griquas opened their scoring in the 27th minute when wing Evan de Wet ran in a well-taken try, which was converted by flyhalf Johandre van der Walt. Van der Walt reduced the deficit to four points in the 32nd minute but the Bulls extended their lead a minute before the break when flank Marcelle Esterhuyze rounded off after some good work by the pack. Roos converted to make it 21-10. Griquas again narrowed the gap three minutes after the break when scrumhalf Paul Erasmus sniped over the line. Van der Walt converted to move the score to 21-17. Roos kicked a penalty to restore the Bulls seven-point lead and number eight Jan-Hendrik Hoogenboezem went over for a try two minutes later, which was converted by Roos, to make it 31-17. The Bulls put the game out of their opponents reach in the 61st minute when centre Pierre Lombard ran in for their fifth try. Roos missed the conversion. Four minutes later, wing Katlego Magakwa got the Bulls sixth try to move the score to 41-17. Griquas scored a consolation try two minutes from time via wing Darren-Lee Koopman, which was converted by van der Walt.

    KZN (21) 34 Pumas (12) 32

The young Sharks kicked a penalty four minutes from time to record a narrow win over the Pumas despite playing the second half with 14 men. Flank Brynard Stander was shown a red card after a dangerous tackle a minute before the break leaving KZN with some work to do despite enjoying a 23-12 lead at the break. KZN scored two tries in the first half through centre Robert de Bruyn and fullback Patrick Lambie, one of which was converted by wing Luan Combrinck. Lambie also added two penalties and Combrinck one. The Pumas’ first half points came via four penalties by flyhalf Gary van Aswegen. The Pumas reduced the deficit to two points shortly after the break with a try by flank Gift Mathonsi, which was converted by van Aswegen. The Pumas took a 22-21 lead in the 40th minute when van Aswegen kicked his fifth penalty, but the young Sharks struck back from the restart with flyhalf Storm Pearton capitalizing on some poor defence to score under the posts and Lambie converting to put KZN 28-22 ahead. Lambie kicked a penalty in the 49th minute to move the score to 31-22 but the Pumas fought back with a try by flank Martin Scheepers, converted by van Aswegen to leave them two points adrift. With 10 minutes to play, van Aswegen kicked what looked to be the winning points when van Aswegen landed a long-distance penalty. But the young Sharks had the final say with Lambie replying with a penalty in the 65th minute to seal the win.

    Lions (19) 29 Western Province (3) 23

The Lions held on for 29-23 win after a spirited fight-back by Western Province in an action-packed second half. The Lions had the better of the possession in the first half, using their forwards to good effect to take ball up and put WP under pressure inside their own half. Centre Wandile Njekevu opened the scoring with a well taken try in the third minute and the Lions went further ahead in the 14th minute when fullback Jaco Taute breached the defence out wide. Flyhalf Elton Jantjies added the conversion to make the score 12-0. WP opened their scoring with a long-range penalty by flyhalf Johannes Potgieter, but the Lions extended their lead with a third try, again by Njekevu, after some good build-up play on the right. Jantjies converted to give the Lions a 19-3 lead at the break. WP started the second half well, managing to improve their share of possession and being able to do more with the ball. They scored a try early on via wing Tythan Adams after forcing a five metre scrum and reduced the deficit to four points in the 50th minute when impressive prop Marcel van der Merwe barged his way over after a good build up by the pack. Potgieter converted to make it 19-15 but the Lions restored their seven point advantage two minutes with a Jantjies penalty. Potgieter was again on target with a penalty for WP in the 60th minute but they had the wind knocked out of their sails when they failed to secure the ball from the restart to allow centre Bradley Moolman in for the try. Jantjies added the extra two points to move score to 29-18. Potgieter added a third penalty to bring WP within eight points but the Lions prevailed to finish the week on a high.

    Boland (19) 53 Valke (3) 17
Boland ran in eight tries to two to score a convincing win over the Valke and end the week as one of only two unbeaten teams. Boland played a swift, running game to gain the upper hand, scoring three tries in the first half to race into a 19-3 lead. Wing Sampie Mastriet, flank Morne Williams and centre Adri Jacobs crossed the Valke line as Boland spread the ball at pace. Fullback Garth April added two conversions. The Valke’s only points in the first spell came via a penalty by flyhalf Dewald Nel. April extended the lead shortly after the break with a penalty and it was one-way traffic for most of the remainder  with Boland moving the heavier Valke pack around the field and punching holes through the defence at regular intervals. They ran in five more tries – through centre Louw Heunis, lock Alan Strecker, wing Dean Swart and Mastriet (2), earning him a deserved hat-trick. Fullback Ryan Jordaan converted three of the tries. For the Valke, wing Morne Stassen and centre Paseko Moloi scored tries and Nel added two conversions but it was small consolation in a game in which they were on the back foot most of the time.

  • 2020 Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival launched

2020 Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival launched

NewsGElwynvanAardwegThe launch of the 13th edition of the Standard Bank Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival last night (Wednesday 19th) was attended by lovers of the game across the spectrum, from current and former Springbok and Sharks rugby players, to coaches, administrators, rugby journalists, and sponsors.

Traditionally the three play days of the festival, held over the Easter long weekend, attract strong teams from across the country, offering an exciting mix of playing styles – and 2020 promises to be no different.

Kearsney College headmaster Elwyn van den Aardweg said he was delighted that there were four teams from the host province: Durban High School (DHS), Glenwood, Westville Boys’ High and Kearsney.

They will be joined by the perennially strong Eastern Cape outfits of Selborne College (East London) and Hoërskool Framesby (Port Elizabeth); as well as HTS Drostdy from the Boland; Hoërskool Noord-Kaap from Kimberley, Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen (Boksburg in Gauteng) and HTS Middelburg (Mpumalanga).

Selborne College will bring their special brand of rugby, which they have displayed each year since the inaugural 2008 edition of Kearsney’s festival. Glenwood and Dr EG Jansen have both played at 10 festivals. Spectators will be delighted to see Westville back, having last played at the festival in 2015. The other local team, DHS, has played at four previous festivals, including the last two.

Referring to Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok captain Siya Kolisi’s address at the Laureus Awards in Berlin this week, Van den Aardweg appealed for school sport to unite schools, provinces and the country.

“I appeal to all schools to work towards positive relationships between players and between schools – use rugby to do this. We cannot allow the sport of rugby to be used as a mechanism for division. Role models for schoolboys are rare these days; and sport offers a wonderful opportunity to develop relationships between schools, with educators taking the lead as role models.”

He said two years ago the Springboks hadn’t been given much chance of success at the 2019 World Cup, but coach Rassie Erasmus, captain Siya Kolisi and others stood up and won the trophy, uniting communities and the country in a euphoria unseen for many years.

“Whatever challenges are facing us, let’s be courageous, let’s even swim against the current to be ‘that guy, that woman’ who makes a positive impact on those around us, on our schools, between our schools and in our communities,” Van den Aardweg said.

Endorsing the festival, Etienne Fynn, managing director of the Sharks Academy, said the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival has consistently showcased some of the top schoolboy rugby talent that South Africa has to offer.

“The games are invariably well-matched and tight, which is indicative of the thought placed in inviting schools which will ensure competitive fixtures at the festival. Add to this the splendid surroundings and faultless organisation, the end product is simply superb,” he said.

Fynn, a former Bok tight-head prop, said the number of players currently representing the Sharks who have participated in the festival was proof of how the Sharks and Sharks Academy have benefitted from the festival.

Prime examples are Sharks and SA Sevens player Tera Mtembu, who captained Dale College at the festival in 2009 and was awarded a Sharks Academy bursary, the exciting Aphele Fassi who was awarded a Sharks Academy bursary at the festival when he captained Dale in 2017 and Mzamo Majola who represented Westville Boys’ High at the festival in 2013.

“We look forward to again witnessing the pure passion on display and trust that the games continue to be played without fear of expression,” Fynn said.

Considered to be one of the most prestigious and well-organised schools’ rugby festivals in South Africa, teams travel with families and supporters to enjoy top schoolboy rugby and a family-friendly festival atmosphere on Kearsney’s beautiful campus, as well as KwaZulu-Natal’s glorious Easter weather.

As in the past, four primary school teams will be offered the opportunity to participate, providing young players with the excitement and challenges of playing on a full-size field in front of large crowds. This year Highbury Preparatory, Hillcrest Senior Primary and Umhlali Preparatory will face the KZN Rugby Union’s Ibutho U13 team to open each day’s play.

The primary school games kick-off at 09h30 daily and will be followed at 10h30 by five tough match-ups between the 10 senior 1st XV teams.

Talent scouts and selectors from the Sharks and Sharks Academy will watch all three play days over the Easter weekend: Thursday 9th, Saturday 11th and Monday 13th April.

The Sharks Academy will offer full bursaries for 2021 to three selected players. These include a contract with the Sharks Academy, accommodation and a tuition bursary with one of its reputable education partners. The recipients of the bursaries, valued at over R120 000 each, will be announced immediately after the final game of the festival.

Van den Aardweg thanked the festival sponsors, whose valued support had enabled the festival to grow over 13 years. Standard Bank remains as headline sponsor with Halfway Ford, MTN and the Hendok Group continuing their support, together with the Sharks and Sharks Academy who have been involved since the festival’s inception.

As festival title sponsor and the school’s banking partner for 23 years, Standard Bank’s head of KZN credit, Brian Busse said they were seeking to harness the power of the country’s Rugby World Cup win in 2019 and translate it into a sustainable schools rugby programme which will change the country’s landscape.

“2020 will see one of South Africa’s greatest school rugby festivals honour the country’s new rugby icon and leader along with his pack, by manifesting their efforts into a tangible representation of hope for all young South Africans who dream of following in his footsteps,” Busse said.

Spectators and players are encouraged to leave new or good condition second-hand rugby kit and clothing in the designated collection area at the main field. The ‘Boots and Balls’ outreach initiative, started five years ago, will ensure all donated kit is sorted and distributed. It will be divided between the newly established Siripat Lions Rugby Club, the Reservoir Hills Rhinos Rugby Club, and the KZN Rugby Union development programme for distribution to development teams throughout the province.

Gate entrance to the festival is R30 per person, but free for children under six. Ample parking will be available; as well as food and refreshment outlets for those wanting to enjoy a full day of entertaining rugby. The festival’s family-friendly environment offers something for the whole family, including the popular KidZone with exciting rides and jumping castles for little ones to enjoy.

  • Grey College secure their 25th successive victory

Grey College secure their 25th successive victory

Grey College kept their unbeaten record by beating Paarl Boys’ High by 34-24 in Paarl. Grey College started off with a bang leading 17-0 after only 20 minutes of play. The visitors played against a strong breeze in the first half. The home side however fought back well to trail by only three points 14-17 at the break.

Grey College winger, AJ Coertzen, dropped his second goal of the week after slotting a cheeky drop goal earlier in the week at the Free State Coca Cola Cravenweek trials while playing flyhalf.  For Paarl Boys’ High their prop Marcel van der Merwe and flanker Burger Kramer played their hearts out.

For the winning team their captain and eightman, Adriaan Theisinger, was the best player on the field. He was supported well by Franna du Toit (flyhalf), Riaan Britz (fullback), Jean Cook (lock) and Anton Earle (flank).

    Scorers:

Grey College 34 (17) – Tries: Jean Cook, Francois Venter, Johan Swanepoel, Schalk van der Merwe, Ernst Dinkelman. Conversions: Franna du Toit 3.  Drop Goal: AJ Coertzen. Paarl Boys’ High 24 (14) – Tries: Marcel van der Merwe, Johan Wilken, Neville Adams, Burger Kramer. Conversions: Adams 2.

  • Voortrekker trash Diamantveld

    Scorers:
Voortrekker 40 (33) – Drieë: Hoffman Maritz (2), Nardu Odendaal (2), Eben de Bruyn, Gert van der Westhuizen. Doelskoppe: Arend Corbett 5. Diamantveld 5 (0) – Drie: Piet Joubert.

  • Menezes scores hat trick in victory over Hentie Cilliers

    Scorers:
Landboudal 27 (10) – Tries: Neul Menezes 3, Pieter Vorster, Durain Huiten. Conversions: Ryan Mulke. Hentie Cilliers 15 (5) – Tries: Paul van Heerden, Dewald Pretorius. Conversion: Hugo Pretorius. Penalty: Pretorius.

Van Wyk and Malherbe to coach Free State U18’s

DEON VAN WYK (Sentraal) and Schalk Malherbe (Jim Fouché) will coach the Free State under 18-side at this year’s Coca Cola Cravenweek that will be held at Affies in Pretoria. The Free State High School’s Rugby Association’s executive committee made the suggestion to appoint the two experienced coaches.

“I’m trust that they will do very well with the team,” said Johan Vorster, chairman of the Free State High School’s Rugby Association. The Free State’s team did exceptionally well at last year’s Coca Cola Cravenweek held at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. The team was coached by Jaco Swanepoel (Grey College) and Gonval Store (President Steyn). Swanepoel accepted the job as the head coach of the University of the Free State’s first team the Shimlas. “Jaco is the best coach at schoolboy level in the country and his loss is a great one to us and school’s rugby in the country,” said Vorster.

Store who helped out last year after Pieter Swanepoel (Brandfort) had to withdraw as coach of the Coca Cola Cravenweek team also made himself unavailable to coach the team again this year. Swanepoel also decided due to his health to withdraw from the race.

Dries van der Wal who coached Grey College’s first team for quite a couple of years with coach the team once again in 2008. Rudolph Brits of Fichardtpark will leave the education fraternity and already resigned as administartive secretary of the Free State High School’s Rugby Association. “Rudolph’s resignation are also a huge blow for us,” said Vorster.

Jimmy Jimlongwe will be the Free State’s team manager at the tournament in Pretoria. The Free State Academy team will be coached by Paul Spies (Louis Botha) en Raymond Titus (Heatherdale). Deon Rodgers will be the team manager.

The three rugby schools of Heidedal – Heatherdale, Dr. Blok and Petunia, will form a combined team which will be known as the Stallions. There were also talk that Sand du Plessis, Dr. Böhmer, Dr. Viljoen and Castlebridge will also combine to form a team. Sand du Plessis will however compete on their on own in the league, while the other three will form a combined XV.

Narrow defeat for SA U20 against France

Two good tries in the second half saw the visiting French Under-20 Training Squad register a narrow but deserved 15-10 victory over their South African counterparts in an entertaining match at Velddrif yesterday.

The SA U20’s had the slight upper hand during the opening stages and deserved their lead of 5-0 at the break.  The French gave a much better performance in the second half and they did well to convert their superior possession into points. “I am happy with what I saw in the match. They are in the middle of their season and are also playing in the Northern Hempisphere’s under 20 Six Nations competition. While we are still at the start of the season. Some of our guys are in Super 14, Vodacom Cup and the National Sevens squads,” said Eric Sauls, coach of the South African U20-side.

The two teams will play their second and final match on Saturday ay 4pm at the same venue. “I have a group of 36 players at the camp and will test other combinations as the ones I tested in the first match,” said Sauls.

The national U20 coach believes there in still a lot of work to be done before the team will depart to Wales for the IRB’s U20 World Championship in June.
