At their Kolisi Field in Saturday’s final game of the Standard Bank Grey High Rugby Festival’s opening day, Grey High delivered one of the most spectacular comebacks of the season to beat Michaelhouse 28-19.

At halftime, the score favoured the Balgowan boys 19-15. Few would have expected the level of passion and resilience that the home side would produce in the second half.

High-flying ‘House flew out of the blocks, scoring in the first minute from a lineout inside the Grey 22. A sharply executed throw-in and quick return pass to hooker Max Oliva gave him some space down the touchline, and he beat a covering defender when he cut inside at the last moment to score.

The home side, however, worked its way back into the game, but it still appeared as though Michaelhouse had the edge going into the second half.

When Grey High finally took the lead, it came from their captain, Ciaran Killian. After receiving the long, flat pass, he broke the Michaelhouse defensive line and was into space. There was still plenty of work to be done, though, and Killian beat the fullback with a step in and then out before breaking another tackle and making the dive for five.

Grey’s victory spoke volumes about the unpredictability of the game. At the Pretoria Boys High 125th Festival, Michaelhouse defeated Affies, while Grey went down by 40 points to the same side.

SACS opened their account in Gqeberha with a 34-26 triumph over Selborne College.

The East London outfit struck first thanks to a deceptive snipe from scrumhalf Connor Fowles, who dummied a pass before hitting a gap from the back of the scrum five metres out from the posts.

From there, SACS turned up the heat. Inside centre James Sale did what he does best and broke a tackle inside the opposition’s 22-metre area to charge over for a try.

The Newlands outfit then added two further tries through the biggest and smallest players on the field respectively, with tighthead prop Qiraan Hermans and scrumhalf Jordan Forbes dotting down.

At half-time, it was 21-14 to SACS, and the Cape Town school did enough in the second half to slightly increase their lead.

Flyhalf Jake Dave slotted over all six of his kicks to collect 14 points from four conversions and two penalties.

Selborne scored two tries in the second stanza through big men. Tighthead prop Daniel Naude was the first across the line, and loose forward replacement Rosh Els followed him over.

Despite a physical fightback from Selborne, it was not enough to overcome the slick and silky hands of SACS.

Just after the SACS match, Rondebosch Boys’ High started their festival campaign with a 42-22 victory over Glenwood High.

It looked like ‘Bosch might be on their way to a one-sided victory when they led 28-10 at the break, but the Green Machine dug deep to match their opponents’ two tries in the second half.

‘Bosch inside centre Andrea Mynhardt dotted down twice, while fullback Shellvon Mabooi was prominent on the scoresheet, with a try and five conversions to his name, giving him 15 points.

Glenwood went down but scored a wonderful try at the death. A chip and chase by Rosco Williams allowed the fullback to get past three defenders, giving him a 30-metre sprint down the left wing to the try line.

However, he was chased down, but he found Cade Isaacs up in support, and the outside centre ran in to collect the five points.

Stephan Janse van Rensburg and the rest of his pack from Hoërskool Pietersburg delivered a commanding performance as the Polokwane side outmuscled Hoërskool Fichardtpark 47–12 on Saturday in the final match of the opening day of the Fairtree Sport Festival.

Pieties‘ win made it back-to-back victories for Limpopo’s two leading schools, with Ben Vorster also recording a convincing win.

Janse van Rensburg dictated proceedings. The experience he gained at the SA Rugby u17 Elite Player Development (EPD) camp in late 2025 was evident, as he anchored a dominant scrum that forced Fichardtpark onto the back foot throughout the contest.

In support, the Pietersburg loose trio, particularly flankers Andru de Beer (openside) and Ignus Ferreira (blindside), were relentless and highly effective in broken play.

Behind them, inside centre Hanru Marais and his midfield partner, Juan Dreyer, added further impetus, capitalising on the dominance their pack had established at both scrum and line-out time.

Lock Dian Visagie stood out for Fichardtpark, producing a tireless performance, despite the Bloemfontein school’s pack being under sustained pressure. Shortly before the final whistle, he was rewarded with his side’s second try.

The Buffels of Hoërskool Ben Vorster ran eight tries in their emphatic 56–17 victory over Hoërskool Dinamika in the penultimate match of the day. The Tzaneen team’s back three were outstanding.

Tumi Ramohale (left wing) and Ronnel Komana (right wing) both crossed the whitewash twice. However, their tries were not merely the result of finishing moves. They consistently created opportunities out of nothing, treating the spectators to some exceptional rugby.

The combination between flyhalf Lolo Letlabola and scrumhalf Joshua van Eeden was also highly effective, with many of the Buffels‘ scoring opportunities originating from their interplay. Lolo Letlabola also crossed for a try and added two conversions, while Joshua van Eeden succeeded with six kicks at goal.

Earlier in the day, Hoërskool Marais Viljoen was forced to battle until the final moments to scrape a narrow 23–22 victory over Hoërskool Merensky Landbou Akademie. A late penalty from flyhalf, Ovayo Jonas, proved decisive. It was the third of three penalties landed by the no. 10, who also added two conversions.

They landed on the losing side, but Plasies played the majority of the rugby. Scrumhalf Christiaan de Lange shone for the Tzaneen outfit, dotting down twice for the Light Blues, but it was not quite enough to see them to victory.

    Scorers

Pietersburg 47 (26) – Tries: Fredrich Cronje (2), Ignus Ferreira. Ziahn Lombaard, Hanru Marais, Juan Dreyer, Andru de Beer. Conversions: Ryno Mienie (6). Fichardtpark 12 (5) – Try: Dian Visagie, Dillon Louw. Conversion: Guiteau Petrus.

Ben Vorster 56 (21) – Tries: Tumi Ramohlale (2), Ronnel Komana (2), Lolos Letlabola, Ruben Pohl, Zane Trollip, Edwin Matola. Doelskoppe: Josua van Eeden (6), Letlabola (2). Dinamika 17 (3) – Tries: Gucci Sithole, Jaden Mathysser. Conversions: Caiden van der Merwe, Andrew Marais. Penalty: Van der Merwe.

Marais Viljoen 23 (7) – Tries: Ondi Njili, Juan Booysen. Conversions: Ovayo Jonas (2). Penalties: Jonas (3). Merensky 22 (15) – Tries: Christiaan de Lange (2), George Steenkamp, Heinrich Kirchner. Conversion: Francois Smith.

Heavy hitters keep Hibbert Shield dreams alive

Two of the most successful teams at the Standard Bank Hibbert Shield, Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) and South African College High School (SACS), kept their title hopes alive on Saturday, day two of the tournament, at Grey High School in Gqeberha.

The Western Cape duo advanced to the quarterfinals after topping their respective pools with strong performances in the final matches of the round-robin pool fixtures.

Paul Roos delivered a dominant display in their last pool match, overpowering Selborne College 8-1. SACS was pushed hard but secured a 4–2 victory over a gritty Garsfontein outfit.

They were joined in the last eight by St Stithians College, who finished second in Pool B, and Westville Boys’ High, the runners-up in Pool C.

Earlier in the day, Parel Vallei, Grey High, Jeppe High School for Boys, and Bishops booked their spots in the quarterfinals (click here to read more on those matches).

    RECAP

SACS entered their Pool C clash against Garsfontein needing a win after a 2–2 draw with Westville and a commanding 7–0 victory over Grey College on Friday.

Coach Sam Holmes‘s side started slowly and conceded a goal in the first chukka, with Leon Venter finishing a well-worked penalty corner variation.

The defending champions responded well. Litha Kraai struck from a penalty corner, and the reliable Mohlodi Maseko slotted a blinder to give the Cape Town school the lead.

Cameron Cordeiro extended the SACS’ advantage to 3-1, but Stian Wissing pulled one back for Garsies to set up a tense finish.

Daniel de Wet scored the defending champs’ fourth to ensure SACS bagged an important win, which secured first place in their pool.

Their reward is a quarterfinal showdown with their southern suburbs’ rivals, Bishops, in a repeat of last week’s Edgars Friday Nite Lights clash, which SACS won 4-2.

Paul Roos was in a different boat in Pool B, having already booked their place in the quarterfinals before their last group game against Selborne College. With a 7-1 win over Clifton College and a 5-1 defeat of St Stithians, PRG boasted a very healthy goal difference, and they padded it even further with a masterclass in their last group assignment.

They were ruthless from the get-go, and Selborne was made to chase shadows for the majority of the clash. PRG made a whopping 30 circle entries, took 16 shots, and made eight of them count.

Caleb Cilliers scored a hat-trick while Louis Kriel bagged a brace. Other goal-scoring contributions came from Danesh Titus, Daniel de Waal, and the skipper, Seth Paterson.

Daelin Hendricks scored Selborne’s solitary goal, but they finished bottom of the Pool B log.

Paul Roos takes on Grey High in the quarterfinals. The clash will be a repeat of last Friday’s match, which the hosts won 2-1.

    Other matches

While the two Western Cape sides progressed, St Stithians College and Westville joined them in the quarterfinals.

Saints needed to beat Clifton to stay in the running for the Hibbert Shield, and a Jason Joiner brace, alongside a strike by Christian Bernhardi, got the job done for coach Pat Owgan‘s charges.

Westville, despite losing 1-2 to Grey College, advanced with four points from their three outings.

Sunday’s action starts bright and early, with the first quarterfinal being played at 7:30.

  • Scheepers and Liggies shine with 19-point victory over Randburg

Scheepers and Liggies shine with 19-point victory over Randburg

Ligbron Akademie powered their way to a convincing 33–14 victory over Hoërskool Randburg at the Fairtree Sport Festival on Saturday.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools(www.supersportschools.com)

Playing at Die Hoërskool Menlopark in Pretoria, Liggies, from Ermelo, asserted their dominance early. They crossed for three tries in quick succession, with their forwards providing good quality ball, and Hoërskool Randburg was unable to contain them.

Lihbron’s loose trio was outstanding, led by captain Henco Scheepers, who wore the no. 19 jersey. Their relentless work rate set the tone from the outset.

Both Scheepers and openside flank Johardt Swanepoel crossed the try-line, with Swanepoel opening the scoring for Liggies.

Hoërskool Randburg‘s standout performer was their flyhalf, Hendrico van Reenen, who contributed nine of his side’s 14 points, including a try, which was a classic number 10’s effort – selling a dummy before slicing through the defence shortly before half-time.

For much of the first half, Randburg kept Ligbron‘s defence honest, but the Liggies’ superiority eventually brought them a 19-point victory.

Earlier in the day, the Die Hoërskool Menlopark Invitational side withstood a spirited fightback from Hoërskool Overvaal to claim a hard-fought 36-27 win.

The Parkies’ victory was a product of their forwards’ dominance, which was underlined by the fact that all six of their tries were scored by members of their pack, with hooker Gihann Parsons and openside flank De Wet Holtzhausen each crossing the whitewash twice.

The man of the match honours, though, went to blindside flank, Eduan Bothma, whose engine ran on all cylinders throughout the contest.

All credit to Hoërskool Overvaal, they refused to buckle. Their challenge was led by left wing Eckardt Hanse van Vuuren and outside centre Connor Eley, who kept the Invitational side under pressure throughout the contest.

In the day’s opening match, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool‘s (Affies) 5th XV, better known as the Bruinbere, ran out 37-20 winners over Hoërskool Dr Malan.

Flyhalf Danté Meyer, the younger brother of former Affies 1st XV scrumhalf Zirk Meyer, delivered a standout performance, contributing 17 of his side’s points from two tries, two conversions, and a penalty.

Hooker Dylan Hopkins kept Dokkies competitive. He also crossed for two tries, which was a deserved reward for his industrious performance.

  • Grey High Rugby Festival: Parel Vallei impresses, Graeme edges out Kearsney

Grey High Rugby Festival: Parel Vallei impresses, Graeme edges out Kearsney

Kingswood College scored a narrow three-point win over St Charles College at the Grey High Rugby Festival in Gqeberha on Saturday. Photo: Kingswood College on Instagram.

The Eastern Cape locals, Kingswood College, battled hard to hold off St Charles College 22-19 in the opening match of the Grey High Rugby Festival in Gqeberha on Saturday.

The Makhanda outfit scored just two minutes into the clash, with their captain and lock, Ross Thompson, sparking the move that led to a try.

He caused the initial dent in the St Charles’ defensive line, breaking through around the 10-metre line. Kingswood then turned to the pick-and-go, and Thompson finished what he had started.

Kingswood extended their advantage to 12-0 before the Pietermaritzburg school found their way onto the scoresheet just before the half-time break.

On the attack inside the opposition 22-metre area, scrumhalf Agape Nyawo sniped through a gap and hit the accelerator to cross for a try.

Thompson, meanwhile, continued to deliver for Kingswood. He set a fine example, generating line-breaking runs while also making an abundance of tackles when on defence.

Blindside flanker Josh Mackenzie was an outstanding workhorse, making tackle after tackle and causing Saints problems with his powerful carries. He was rewarded with a try from close range, dragging a handful of defenders across the whitewash before he dotted down.

It was a back-and-forth clash, but, in the end, a deserved win for Kingswood, with St Charles unable to overcome their early 12-point deficit.

Graeme College and Kearsney College produced a classic, in which Graeme ultimately finished as the 35-33 winners.

It took until the 11th minute for the scoring to start, and it continued to accumulate as the teams combined for 10 tries – five each.

Graeme flyhalf Ibenathi Kondile set the ball rolling by taking advantage of a poor pass by Kearsney to run in from 40 metres out. The Botha’s Hill boys appeared to have matters under control, though, when their right wing, Luke Grobbelaar, scored a similar try to put Kearsney 21-7 ahead. However, Graeme struck back before the end of the first half to halve their deficit.

They struck again early in the second half through their outside centre Erin Nelson, with Graeme again punishing Kearsney’s inaccuracy. He benefitted from a poor pass, turning over possession and running in for five points, untouched.

The Graeme captain’s biggest contribution, though, wasn’t his try. Rather, it was the fact that he converted all of his team’s tries. On the flip side, Kearsney’s no. 10, Daniel Miskey, had a conversion strike the left upright, and a last-minute penalty kick faded left of the posts, leaving Graeme with a heart-stopping two-point victory.

In a remarkable turnaround, Hoërskool Framesby took a 14-10 half-time lead over Parel Vallei, but then conceded 40 points without reply in the second half as the Somerset West school charged to a 50-14 victory.

The Gqeberha locals struck the first blow in the 18th minute, thanks to their fullback Jamiel Swarts, who danced his way past three defenders before rewarding scrumhalf Cariston Marney’s excellent support line, which took him across the try line unscathed.

In the second stanza, though, PV delivered some superb running rugby to exploit holes in a tired-looking Framesby defence. Fullback Shudley Rhoda tormented Framesby, putting on display an impressive variety of skills, which carried him across the whitewash four times, which was half of Parel Vallei’s eight tries.

With the win, the Bulldogs extended their 2026 record to a perfect six wins from six matches.

    Scorers

Kingswood College 22 (12) – Tries: Ross Thompson, Kungawo Badi, Charl du Toit, Josh Mackenzie. Conversion: Christopher Zimmerman. St Charles College 19 (5) – Tries: Agape Nyowa, Njabulo Nala, Bonga Nkosi. Conversions: Njabulo Nala (2).

Graeme College 35 (14) – Tries: Thurston Williams (2), Ibenathi Kondile, Lucritia Magua, Erin Nelson. Conversions: Erin Nelson (5). Kearsney College 33 (21) – Tries: Lwazi Mbebe, Luke Grobbelaar, Nhlanhla Ndlovu, Keanu Williamson, Clement Makalele. Conversions: Daniel Miskey (4).

Hoërskool Parel Vallei 50 (10) – Tries: Shudley Rhoda (4), Joshua Buchweitz, Raphael von Loeper, Michael Kent, penalty try. Conversions: Stephan Niemann (4). Hoërskool Framesby 14 (14) – Tries: Cariston Marney, Calestin Felkers. Conversions: Miles Feltham (2).

  • Glenwood leads the way as KZN football leagues hit full throttle

Glenwood leads the way as KZN football leagues hit full throttle

The reigning champions in the Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) Coastal and Inland Leagues made robust starts to their campaigns, but in week two, several teams that had won their opening matches either lost or drew. Glenwood High, though, continued its winning run.

    Coastal A-League, Tuesday, 21 April

The Green Machine currently tops the Coastal A-League standings with the maximum six points after a 2-1 win over the defending champions, Westville Boys’ High, on Tuesday at Queensburgh High.

The Griffins took an early lead, but Glenwood responded in the second half. Substitute Aphelele Magwaza made an immediate impact and altered the course of the game by assisting Ukwazi Dludla with an easy tap-in for the equaliser.

The Green Machine kept dialling up the pressure, and that bore fruit when Westville conceded a penalty. Magwaza stepped forward and calmly converted from the spot to join Dludla on two goals for the season.

Glenwood’s win followed a 3-1 defeat of Pinetown Boys’ High in the first week. With the loss, Westville slipped to fourth place, while Pinetown finds itself at the bottom of the table.

Northwood, who flirted with relegation in 2025, has made a much better start to the season this time around. The Knights have played two games and followed up a 2-1 win over Port Shepstone High with another 2-1 win, beating Durban High School (DHS).

Rhys Millar, a regular goal scorer for the Knights, netted the opening goal, and Owami Maduna added the second, while Alwande Makhonza scored for DHS. Northwood currently trails Glenwood on goal difference.

Port Shepstone claimed their first win of the season, sneaking by Hillcrest High 1-0. The runner-up in 2025, Hillcrest High is winless through the first two weeks, which leaves them in seventh place, just above Pinetown, at the bottom, who fell to a 0-2 loss against Bechet.

    Inland A-League, Wednesday, 23 April

In the Inland A-League, the traditional frontrunners, Carter High and Maritzburg College, lead the way, with both Carter and College on four points, just ahead of Haythorne Secondary, also with four points.

Carter scored their first victory of the season, beating Ixopo 2-0, while College was held to a 1-1 draw by Alexandra High. Haythorne secured a narrow 1-0 win over Linpark.

It was also tight between Edendale and ML Sultan, with Edendale shading their clash 1-0.

    Coastal B-League, Thursday, 24 April

On Thursday in the Coastal B-League, New Forest moved up to six points after defeating Grovesnor 3-0. However, their position at the top of the standings is not comfortable. Queensburgh High also has six points after their second win of the season, a 2-1 win over Brettonwood on their home ground.

While New Forest and Queensburgh High bagged three points each, Sastri College and Empangeni High drew 2-2 to pick up one each, which was the same haul as Amanzimtoti and Redwood College, who drew 1-1.

    Inland C-League, Thursday, 24 April

Carter B scored a 2-0 victory over Maritzburg College C on Thursday in the Inland C-League.

Umvuzo defeated St Nicholas Diocesan School 2-1, while Siyanda Secondary School and Smero Secondary School shared a goalless draw at the AB Jackson field.

    Inland B-League, Friday, 24 April

On Friday, in the Inland B-League, Maritzburg College B‘s clash with Northbury ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Heritage Academy, meanwhile, won for the first time, beating Thornhill 3-0.

Alexandra defeated Michaelhouse 2-0, and Maritzburg Christian School claimed a slim 1-0 victory over Riverwood College.

Alexandra High B tops the Inland B-League table with six points, followed by Northbury and Maritzburg College, both with four points.

    Coastal C-League, Friday, 24 April

On Friday, in the Coastal C-League, newcomers Kloof High scored a 1-0 win over Rossburgh. That result means they have a full haul of points but trail table-topping George Campbell on goal difference. Kloof, in turn, is ahead of Durban Academy on goal difference.

Durban Academy won 2-0 against Canaan College, while George Campbell cruised to a 4-0 win over Queensburgh High BDurban North College scored a 3-1 win over Ashton Ballito.

  • Four teams march into Hibbert Shield quarterfinals

Four teams march into Hibbert Shield quarterfinals

Parel Vallei High School (PV), Grey High, Jeppe High School for Boys, and Bishops secured their places in the quarterfinals of the Standard Bank Hibbert Shield on Saturday.

PV finished atop Pool A, while Grey claimed second place in the group, edging out Durban High School (DHS) by the slightest of goal differences.

Jeppe, meanwhile, topped Pool D, and Bishops took the runners-up spot.

Pool A, a group which was touted as the “Pool of Death”, delivered fireworks on the second day at the Rectory AstroTurf.

Heading into the day’s play, PV led the group with six points after wins over Grey High (5-1) and St Alban’s College (3-0) on the opening day.

The hosts and DHS were joint second and separated by goal difference, while St Alban’s propped up the standings.

Grey, after their loss to PV, rebounded with a resounding 5-1 win over DHS Friday night, but they still needed a positive result against St Alban’s to send themselves into the last eight.

Playing under pressure, coach Andrew Beynon’s charges delivered when it mattered the most and sealed a 2-0 win, courtesy of goals by Logan Meyer and Michael Gillies.

That meant DHS had to beat Parel Vallei to stand a chance of progressing. However, it wasn’t that simple. DHS had to make sure they scored five or more goals while also preventing coach Michael van Rensburg‘s charges from finding the back of the net.

The boys from KwaZulu-Natal showed intent and started like a house on fire, scoring goals through Jessie van Wyk, Matt Potgieter, and Eben Peters.

PV were far from their best, but they switched on in the second half. Tristan Rautenbach led the comeback before a late Luka Meets brace levelled matters. With the double, Meets lifted his tally to seven goals in the tournament.

The 3-3 results confirmed Parel Vallei’s place at the top of the table. It also ensured the home side retained its chance of lifting the Hibbert Shield for a second time.

PV will face either St Stithians College or Clifton College, from Pool B, while Grey faces Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) in a rematch of their clash played only a week earlier, which Grey won 2-1. The Stellenbosch school has been in top form at the Hibbert Shield, though, comfortably dealing with Clifton and Saints on day one, and making their case as one of the teams to beat.

Jeppe defeated Pearson High 7-2 in their final match of the day to top Pool D thanks to a hat-trick by Adam Breytenbach and contributions by Adrian Laubsher, Jarryd Gordon-Watt, Kade Lottering and skipper Cole Stanbury. They will take on Westville Boys’ High.
