Volkies beskik egter oor hul eie gevare.

Zwartkop t. Montana om 16:10 in Springs:

Zwartkop: 15 Waylin Papier, 14 Dian du Plooy, 13 Stiaan Botha, 12 David van Jaarsveld, 11 Rowan Badenhorst, 10 Tilon Baron, 9 Ruvan Burger, 8 Wihan Roux, 7 Luan Wepener, 6 Mikka Allers, 5 Jethro le Roux, 4 Herman Potgieter, 3 Ruben Harvey, 2 Regan Blignaut, 1 Matthew Smith.

Montana: 15 Edrich Strydom, 14 Corban Kruger, 13 Luan Barnard, 12 Henroe Colyn, 11 Christiaan Booysen, 10 Rubel Bester, 9 Du Preez Prinsloo, 8 Ulrich van Biljon, 7 Shawn Moabelo, 6 Reghardt van Biljon, 5 Jayden Cloete, 4 Eric Potgieter, 3 Fanrich Hough, 2 Juan Theunissen, 1 Kyle van Schalkwyk.

Wesvalia t. Heidelberg Volkies om 16:00 in Brakpan:

Wesvalia: 15 Wilson Letholi, 14 Ruben de Klerk, 13 Viandré Heymans, 12 Dundré Hales, 11 Damian Potgieter, 10 Wian du Preez, 9 Brandt Muller, 8 Quewen Fourie, 7 Tiaan de Kock, 6 Christiaan Swanepoel, 5 JP Hattingh, 4 Dominic Kath, 3 Charl du Preez, 2 Christiaan Naudé, 1 Jordan van der Schyff.

Heidelberg Volkskool: 15 Tyrone Munro, 14 Steph Loubser, 13 JR Liebenberg, 12 Vaughn Steynvaart, 11 Jerado Tafel, 10 Tristan Monro, 9 Hein Oelofse, 8 Juandré Pretorius, 7 Klaas Venter, 6 Jaco Botha, 5 Albie Botha, 4 Jano Dietrechsen, 3 Darius Minie, 2 Henru Coetzer, 1 Reuben Bothma.

Riley Norton will lead an exciting Junior Springbok squad for the third edition of SANZAAR’s Under-20 Rugby Championship, which starts on 27 April in Gqeberha.

Junior Bok head coach Kevin Foote included four members of the SA U20 squad that won the Junior World Championship in Italy last year, as well as several of the most promising young local rugby talent.

Apart from Norton, Siphosethu Mnebelele, Oliver Reid and Vusi Moyo were members of the successful Junior Bok side of last year. They are joined in the squad by Markus Muller, Ethan Adams (both centres), Gert Kemp (No 8) and Kai Pratt (prop), all of whom played for the SA U18 side last year.

The Junior Bok squad was picked from the SA U20 training group who were preparing for the forthcoming SANZAAR event in Stellenbosch for the past two weeks.

Cheswill Jooste (wing) and Zekhethelo Siyaya (fullback) were placed on standby pending their duties in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, along with Jade Muller and Akahluwa Boqwana.

Meanwhile, former Wynberg Boys’ High School lock Jaythen Orange and FNB UCT midfielder Olunje Mehlomakulu were late additions to the squad in place of the injured AJ Meyer and Christian Vorster.

Injury also ruled out regular Junior Bok training squad member Luan Giliomee, after the Blitzbok utility player sustained a niggle which prevented him from attending the latest training camp.

Commenting on the final selection, Foote said it was no easy task to reduce the training squad from 43 players to 31 for the tournament.

“We asked a lot of the group over the past two weeks, because we wanted to step up the intensity and increase their fitness, and they responded splendidly,” said Foote.

“We know from experience that the southern hemisphere teams play a high tempo game, and we are looking forward to playing an exciting brand of rugby with lots of ball in play.

“We tailored our camp programme around those focus-areas, so that we can prepare our players accordingly for what they will encounter in the Rugby Championship. We also continued to work hard on our cohesion and our game model, and the coaching staff are very pleased with the effort of all the young men.

“Unfortunately, we can only take a squad of 31, and so we feel for those players who missed out on final selection. We will fine-tune our final preparations in Gqeberha before our opening match on 27 April against Argentina.”

With the Junior World Championship in mind, in June and July in Georgia, the Junior Bok coach said the door was not closed on those players who missed out on selection, or any other player who did not attend the current training camp. He also thanked the provincial unions and franchises for preparing the players for the training camp.

  • Defending champs hit all the right notes as KZN football season kicks off

Defending champs hit all the right notes as KZN football season kicks off

The Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA)  kicked off its Coastal and Inland leagues this week, with the reigning champions and other traditionally strong teams claiming victories.

    Coastal A-League

On Tuesday, Westville Boys’ High, the reigning champions of the Coastal A-league, faced last year’s runner-up, Hillcrest High.

Westville didn’t allow Hillcrest the satisfaction of reversing the result, handing Hillcrest High a 2-0 defeat. Last year, Hillcrest, with a youthful lineup, surprised many, not only in KwaZulu-Natal but across the nation. Their achievements also included qualifying for the inaugural Curro Halala Cup, where they ultimately lost in the Plate final to Meridian Pinehurst.

Glenwood High, reeling from a disappointing 2025 season, which ended without silverware, faced a strong challenge in their opening match against Pinetown Boys’ High. Last year’s competition was not kind to Pinetown Boys’ High, but they later showed their quality by winning the Kloof High School National Football Tournament and the Kearsney Soccer Tournament.

Against Glenwood, though, their Coastal League troubles emerged, with Glenwood winning 3-1. Wandile Ndimande netted a consolation goal for Pinetown, but Glenwood captain Ndalo Mbatha, Ukwazi Dludla, and Aphelele Magwaza struck for the Green Machine.

It was a promising start for Glenwood, who were the champions of the KZNHSFA Coastal A-League in 2023 and 2024. Pinetown will be hoping to avoid a repeat of last year’s disastrous league campaign, where they flirted with relegation alongside Northwood. Both went on to put together strong seasons.

Northwood, they will surely be pleased to start the new season with three points following their 2-1 victory over Port Shepstone. In 2025, Northwood escaped relegation in the final round of league matches.

Rhys Millar, a consistent goal scorer over the past three seasons, struck for the Knights. Daniel Van Huyssteen also got his name on the scoresheet.

    Inland A-League

The reigning Inland champions, Maritzburg College, kicked off the new season with a slim 1-0 victory over ML Sultan, who earned promotion after winning the Inland B-League last season. Ndzolo Ngcemu netted the decisive goal for the Red, Black, and White.

Close matches were the order of the day in the Inland A-League. Ixopo Secondary School edged out Edendale Technical High 1-0. Promoted last season, Edendale enjoyed a strong first campaign in the A-League, finishing third. But a goal from Luvuyo Mjwara meant they started with a loss to Ixopo.

Last season’s runner-up, Carter High, was held to a 1-1 draw by Linpark, with Ayabonga Sibiya finding the back of the net for Carter.

The clash between Alexandra High and Haythorne Secondary School also ended in a 1-1 draw, with Mthobisi Ngcono scoring for Alex.

    Coastal B-League

On Thursday, in the Coastal B-League, Sastri and Amanzimtoti shared an exciting 3-3 draw in one of the most entertaining matches of the opening week at Queensburgh High.

The home team, Queensburgh High, was also part of a draw, playing to a 1-1 result against Grosvenor Boys’ High.

New Forest and the 2025 champions of the Coastal C-League, Brettonwood, scored impressive wins. New Forest defeated Empangeni High 3-0, thanks to goals from Sfundo Khanyile, Ayabonga Gqoloba, and Siyabonga Mbili.

Newly promoted Brettonwood matched that result, with Fanele Ngili, Blessing Muzanembi, and Tebogo Ngcobo scoring in a convincing win over Redwood College.

    Inland C-League

Also on Thursday, in the Inland C-League, Umvuzo Secondary School faced off against the newcomers, Siyanda High School, with their match ending in a 1-1 draw. Ntokozo Nxumalo netted for Umvuzo, while Kwanele Mdaka equalised for Siyanda.

The Carter High B team took on Smero Secondary School, handing the newcomers a 2-0 defeat.

  • All Eyes on Paarl as Gimmies dare to start as favourites against Grey

All Eyes on Paarl as Gimmies dare to start as favourites against Grey

It is not every day that a team takes the field against Grey College as the favourites, but that is exactly what Paarl Gimnasium will do this Saturday on their home ground in Paarl in the King Price Derby Series.

Follow all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com) or on DStv channel 216. The clash kicks off at 14:00 on the JA Kriel Field.

The Gimmies defeated Grey by 43–31 in Bloemfontein last year. It was the team from the City of Roses’ first home defeat since 2017. Grey’s previous home loss before that was against Paarl Boys’ High, with Abner van Reenen spearheading a 46–31 victory.

No fewer than six players who were involved in that win last year will turn out for the Gimmies again this year – Charles Whitehead (hooker), Jean Dreyer (lock), Hendré van Zyl (loose forward), Mickyle Booise (scrumhalf), Thomas Saunders (wing), and Ethan Barker (centre).

Both teams have only been on the losing end once this year against South African opposition, and against the same opponent. Paarl Gimnasium went down 19–20 to the country’s top school team so far in 2026, Stellenberg, in their opening match of the season.

Grey College lost 21–26 to Stellenberg during the Noord/Suid tournament. Less than 48 hours later, the Bloemfontein side also suffered a 26–29 defeat against Australia’s Nudgee College.

One of Grey’s biggest stalwarts, O’Ryan Kleyn (inside centre), was injured in the clash against Nudgee College. He undoubtedly leaves a gap in the Bloemfontein team and will probably not be in action again this year.

Grey last lost three matches in a row on the rugby field in 2015. At the time, the team were beaten by Monument (7–17), Paarl Boys’ High (19–21), and Affies (18–29).

Only two players in Grey’s squad, Lamla Mgedezi (fullback) and Alexi Tyropolis (captain and lock), were also in the starting line-up against the Gimmies last year.

Eddie Mabena (inside centre) and Hennie Bredenhann (loosehead prop) were on the bench.

Mabena has moved from outside centre to inside centre to fill Kleyn’s boots. His centre partner, Emile Aucamp, can expect a proper baptism of fire in Paarl.

A fair amount of rain is expected in Paarl, which could limit Grey’s dangerous backline.

Paarl Gimnasium recorded a resounding 51–24 victory over Affies in the King Price Derby Series last Saturday. The team’s fullback, Saunders, as well as scrumhalf Mickyle Booise, were on song in that win.

The key to success for Grey in Paarl will lie with their pack of eight, who will need to deliver a similar performance to the one they produced earlier this year in their 38–7 win over Oakdale Landbou.

    The teams:

Paarl Gimnasium: 15 Thomas Saunders, 14 Corné de Beer, 13 Derik Cloete, 12 Ethan Barker (captain), 11 De Waal Vivier, 10 Louis Koen, 9 Mickyle Booise, 8 Hendré van Zyl, 7 Dirk Hugo, 6 Corné Niemand, 5 Jean Dreyer, 4 Bernhardt Schulze, 3 Sebastian Bekker, 2 Charles Whitehead, 1 Jayden Steyl.

Grey College: 15 Lamla Mgedezi, 14 Johan Dormehl, 13 Emile Aucamp, 12 Eddie Mabena, 11 JG Horn, 10 Christoff Crous, 9 Jonathan Drysdale, 8 Niel du Randt, 7 Henru Erasmus, 6 Xander de Beer, 5 Jannes Krause, 4 Alexi Tyropolis (kaptein), 3 JW Coetzee, 2 AJ Hendriks, 1 Hennie Bredenhann.

    Kick-Off: 14:00

With their scheduled clash with St Andrew’s School this weekend called off, Clifton College instead continued their preparation for the Standard Bank Hibbert Shield with an outing against Glenwood High School on Thursday evening at the Riverside Sports Club.

Clifton carried strong form into the match, having won four and drawn one at the Saint Stithians Easter Festival, where their victims included Falcon College, St Stithians, Reddam House Constantia, and Affies.

Glenwood, meanwhile, won one, drew one, and lost two at the KES Easter Festival, defeating Eldoraigne and drawing with Waterkloof, while going down to Grey College and Pearson, with the Gqeberha boys, who were unbeaten in Johannesburg, squeezing out a 1-0 win.

More recently, though, Glenwood demonstrated a strong team spirit by coming back from 0-2 down to draw 2-2 with Maritzburg College.

On Thursday, they gave high-flying Clifton everything they had and, when the final whistle blew, Clifton had snatched a 3-3 draw with a penalty stroke only two-and-a-half minutes from time.

The boys are fighting. This is a different Glenwood,” the school’s Director of Hockey, Braydon Naidoo, told SuperSport Schools Plus. “They’re digging deep. The body language is good, there’s good energy, and they’re in the fight, and they’re expecting to get results from that.”

The match was a personal triumph for Daniel Ruiters. Left out of Glenwood’s squad for the KES Easter Festival, he delivered the kind of response that makes coaches happy by netting his first 1st XI hat-trick.

Early on, the contest lacked intensity, and it appeared as if it might be business as usual for Clifton when they turned their early territorial dominance into an eighth-minute lead, thanks to a calm reverse stick finish from Luke Carolan after a scramble in the Glenwood circle.

Through the first chukka, they appeared to be on cruise control, but Ruiters stunned the home side in the first minute of the second half by levelling the scores.

Clifton came close to taking the lead again from a penalty corner, but Ithani Doyi pulled off a magnificent goal-line save, rejecting Clifton captain Ryde Brisset‘s sizzling high shot. Almost immediately, Glenwood hit back, going the length of the field before Ruiters provided the finish to make it 2-1.

Given another penalty corner opportunity, Brisset changed his plan and fired a drag flick low and hard past the goalkeeper’s right to make it 2-2.

Stung by having fallen behind, Clifton picked up their intensity, but Glenwood matched them.

Deep into the fourth chukka, Clifton defender Tye Milne led an attack deep into Glenwood’s half, but when he was dispossessed, he slipped as he attempted to recover, and the visitors launched another scything counterattack. They opened up a one-man advantage, forcing Clifton goalkeeper Georg Wolhuter to come off his line, and a neat pass set up Ruiters for a tap-in.

Glenwood led 3-2 with little time remaining in the game. Credit to Clifton, they hungrily chased an equaliser, and they got it, courtesy of Milne, who was handed the responsibility of converting the penalty stroke after a Clifton attacker was taken out in the Glenwood circle.

Clifton’s coach, Calvin Price, was none too pleased with his side after the game. They hadn’t switched on until they found themselves trailing 1-2 in the second half. At the Hibbert Shield, not being switched on will cost them dearly.

On a positive note, it was a needed and timely reminder to Clifton that they need to be on song from the first whistle. that nothing is a given. They’ve been caught cold early on in a couple of matches this season, and will need to guard against that.

Glenwood’s players didn’t appear that happy with the draw either, which spoke volumes about the strides the school has made since Braydon Naidoo took charge of their programme two seasons ago. Go back three years, and Glenwood would have considered a draw a victory, but their disappointment in Thursday’s results revealed the standard to which the players now hold themselves.

“It was a cynical foul at the end there to give away the penalty stroke,” Naidoo admitted candidly. “That’s a disappointment, but I also think we’ve been close in the past two games against two teams we shouldn’t be close to, with those teams, Maritzburg College and Clifton, ranked among the top 15 in the country, and both are having cracker seasons.

“In the past five days, the boys have put in two big shifts. It shows character to come from behind in both games to get the draws. Props to the boys, they’re digging deep and giving everything. They’re well-conditioned.”

Naidoo revealed the talent that lies in the Glenwood ranks, explaining: “It’s a very young side, with four matrics. A couple of the guys are in grade 9 and grade 10, so there’s a lot to look forward to in the future.”

Good leadership has also helped Glenwood make up ground on other teams, he added: “We’ve got good leaders. Our Deputy Head Boy [Murray Wicks] leads the side, and there are good prefects around him as well.”

He concluded: “There is good energy around the programme at the moment. There’s a nice vibe and atmosphere. The future is bright. The boys can see that, and they’re hungry for it.”

A well‑rested Garsfontein will take on an agitated Wit Bulle of Affies on Saturday at Bere Park in Pretoria in a King Price Derby Series clash.

Follow all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com) or on DStv channel 216. Kick‑off is at 15:30.

The Garsfontein Bere have not been in action since their previous match at the NMI Toyota Noord/Suid tournament on Monday, 30 March. That game marked a historic first victory of 31–28 over Paarl Boys’ High.

Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool Pretoria’s Wit Bulle, meanwhile, have already been in action four times since then.

After the main fixture against Hoërskool Durbanville (24–13) on the final day of the NMI Toyota Noord/Suid tournament on Tuesday, 31 March, Affies narrowly lost 27–29 to Michaelhouse during Pretoria Boys High’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

They then made short work of Grey High School from Gqeberha by 59–19. Last Saturday, the Wit Bulle suffered a 24–52 defeat at home against Paarl Gimnasium in a King Price Derby Series encounter.

Garsfontein might have run onto the field as favourites on Saturday, but the fact that the clash will take place on a soaking‑wet Bere Park surface is likely to curb the effectiveness of the team’s dangerous back three of Drewyn Baron, Neil de Kock and Yuvrah George.

The Bere are also the only team that has managed to beat the country’s top school team so far this season, Hoërskool Stellenberg, edging them by 21–20.

The team would probably have occupied the top spot on the rankings if it were not for the fact that they went down 26–29 to Jeppe High School for Boys in their first match of 2026.

Garsfontein’s loose trio, led by influential captain and eighthman Lourenz de Jager, will play an important role for the home side in this encounter. The two flankers, Derik Potgieter and Stefan “Kwagga” van der Vyver, will support their captain both in the set pieces and in open play.

Van der Vyver’s work at the breakdowns could prove particularly decisive.

Affies starts with a new centre pairing in Estian Marx and Rico du Plessis. The latter has only run out once before for the Wit Bulle, when he played at outside centre against Grey High.

This time he will start at inside centre alongside Marx. The only other change to Affies’ starting line‑up is the loss of eighthman, Janno Geyser. Keegan Fourie will have to fill Geyser’s boots.

The Blue Bulls selectors will also be watching the match with keen interest.

    The teams:

Hoërskool Garsfontein: 15 Drewyn Barron, 14 Neil de Kock, 13 Levi Jordaan, 12 Keagan Knighton, 11 Yuvrah George, 10 Ruan Fluks, 9 Dean Wilbers, 8 Lourenz de Jager (captain), 7 Derik Potgieter, 6 Stefan van der Vyver, 5 SW Potgieter, 4 JJ Fourie, 3 Ruben Lombard, 2 Justin Blom, 1 André van Wyk.

Affies: 15 Reuben Venter, 14 Dandré Brink, 13 Estian Marx, 12 Rico du Plessis, 11 Joshua Gouws, 10 Reuben Smith, 9 Fourie Roberts, 8 Keegan Fourie, 7 Caleb Pretorius, 6 Lohan Bitzer, 5 Reubenne Vlok, 4 Martin van Niekerk (captain), 3 Hannes Nagel, 2 Carl Els, 1 Francois de Beer.

    Kick-Off: 15:30
    Referee: Gerrie de Bruin.

Grey High will embark on the school rugby version of the Masters golf course’s Amen Corner when they host the formidable Paul Roos Gimnasium team in a King Price Derby Series encounter in Gqeberha on Saturday.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

The main action on the Kolisi Field at the Mill Park campus will kick off at 14.30, the first step in the home team’s most challenging period of the 2026 season.

Following their clash with the Western Cape powerhouse, Grey will go into their annual Standard Bank Festival with seriously tough fixtures lined up against Michaelhouse next Saturday, 25 April, and Pretoria Boys’ High, two days later.

If they can emerge from that period with their reputation intact, it will be a major plus for the rest of the season after some modest results, by their standards, in their 2025 campaign.

But first, Grey High’s focus will be on the Stellenbosch outfit, who had strung together some impressive wins this season before having the wind knocked out of their sails by the high-flying Stellenberg last weekend, losing 10-20.

That should only serve to fire up the Maroon Machine for another terrific SA schools derby, albeit one that they have dominated.

Grey High last beat Paul Roos in 2017 when they produced a remarkable fightback, scoring 14 points in the last 12 minutes to triumph 22-20.

Since then, Paul Roos has called the shots, and it will take a massive performance from Grey captain and centre Ciaran Killian and his teammates to reverse that trend this weekend.

That is just one match on a day of fascinating Eastern Province schools clashes, which includes Pearson facing their hardest match of the season against Outeniqua in George, where kick-off takes place at 13:20.

The Summerstrand side has stitched together four wins out of four so far, but they will have their unbeaten run properly tested by the Kwaggas.

A huge showdown looms in Kariega when Brandwag hosts Muir College in a classic town derby.

Both sides are coming off close defeats last weekend, so they will have every incentive to regain the winning feeling in their Tinara Cup clash.

In Gqeberha, Framesby and Nico Malan will go hammer and tongs in a match that is always a fierce contest, while Daniel Pienaar should have too much ammunition for the gutsy Otto du Plessis outfit.

Durban High School (DHS), unbeaten thus far in 2026 – which is something that not many teams can claim – visits Northwood on Saturday for a showdown on Reece-Edwards Field. A demanding test awaits the Horseflies.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

The Knights have played DHS as well as any other team in School‘s recent highly successful seasons. They’ve made each meeting a down-and-dirty battle, limiting DHS’s opportunities to bring their backline into the game.

Last year, DHS won only 22-19 at home before firing on all cylinders in a 38-5 win at Northwood late in the season.

In 2024, when coach Peter Engledow‘s charges boasted the best defensive record in the country – they conceded 20 points only once, and that was 20 exactly in a 24-20 win over Jeppe – they were held to a 7-7 draw at Northwood and won 18-11 on Van Heerden’s Field.

DHS was last in action during the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival, where they beat a feisty Hoërskool Zwartkop 31-14, Hoërskool Rustenburg 38-7, and Helpmekaar Kollege 39-27. Northwood, meanwhile, thumped Marlow Landbou 47-7 and St Andrew’s College 52-21 at the KES Easter Festival.

Last weekend, the only thing separating the Knights from high-flying Westville Boys’ High on Bowden’s Field was the accurate boot of Westville flyhalf, Jade-Will Koopman. Both teams scored five tries, but Koopman converted all five for Westville to give his side a hard-fought 35-29 win.

Northwood is a rugged outfit, strong in the set pieces, which is a reflection of their coach, Jacques Deen. Typically, they make life difficult for their opposition at lineout time, and they contest everything on the ground.

That recipe has slowed down DHS in some of the recent meetings of the Durban rivals. It’s what they’ll need to focus on again on Saturday. If they don’t, DHS scrumhalf Richard Kriel will test them around the fringes of rucks and mauls. He showed against Helpmekaar that he can be a match-winner.

Accurate tactical kicking will be crucial, too. Last year, in a narrow 14-16 loss to Westville Boys’ High, one loose kick led to the Griffins‘ outstanding SA Schools’ fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya running in a stunning try. While Cilermo Carolus is not in Siyaya’s class, he’s a superb player in his own right, and he instigates many DHS counterattacks.

DHS also has excellent finishers, and their centre combination is outstanding. Byron Klaasin, at inside centre, delivers a physical onslaught, much like his predecessor, Zingce Simke, while outside of him, SA Schools’ centre Nathan Aneke is a smooth operator, who regularly slices through opposing defences.

Northwood’s backs, coached by Jeremy McLaren, showed at KES that they’re an exciting bunch. They turned cross-kicks and high kicks into devastating weapons in their win over St Andrew’s College. That was made possible by their pack, under the guidance of former Springbok prop Heinke van der Merwe, giving their backline good ball.

While Northwood has had to make do without their captain and Sharks no. 8, Jamie Wimble, they have in Kevin van Volenstee, a member of the Sharks’ Grant Khomo-winning team of 2026, a very capable replacement. One of the big questions about Saturday’s game is whether or not the inspirational Wimble will be available.

Reece-Edwards Field provides an impressive backdrop to the fixture. With the Indian Ocean in the background, and high stands on three sides of the field, it paints a pretty picture, but that peaceful venue will find itself enveloped by a wall of sound on Saturday.

Maritzburg College vs Pretoria Boys’ High

Maritzburg College hosts Pretoria Boys High on Goldstone’s on Saturday. Recent history favours the Red, Black, and White.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

In 2025, they won 25-28 in Pretoria and 36-5 at home. In 2024, College triumphed 42-15 on Goldstone’s and 19-18 at Boys High. Going a little further back, College won by only five points and one point in 2019. But it was in 2017 that Pretoria Boys High last beat Maritzburg College. The good news is that they achieved that 17-10 win on Goldstone’s.

The home side’s recent form is good, however. They’ve won three in a row, conceding no more than 13 points in those games – beating Jeppe 35-12, SACS 24-7, and Glenwood 33-13 – and that’s something that will take a side a long way.

The Candies have been involved in higher-scoring clashes, winning three – 31-24 vs St Stithians, 35-34 vs SACS, and 14-3 vs Parktown Boys’ High – and losing two – 14-45 to Paul Roos and 20-43 to Rondebosch.

The key to victory lies in those aggregates. College would like to keep the game tighter, and Boys High would like to open it up. They have plenty of pace in their backline and have scored some thrilling tries this season.

Maritzburg College will aim to grind down the visitors. They have a solid pack, which is good in the set pieces, and strong when mauling. College possesses one of the best goal-kickers in the game in scrumhalf Dom du Toit, so PBHS will have to be disciplined when put under pressure by the College forwards.

Typically, matches between the schools have been entertaining affairs played in good spirits, so expect more of the same on Saturday.

Jeppe High School for Boys vs Westville Boys’ High

Westville Boys’ High‘s unbeaten season in 2025 did not include a win over Jeppe High School for Boys. Heavy rains put paid to that clash on Bowden’s Field, so Saturday’s match on Collard Field will be a first meeting between the sides since 2024. That day, they dished up a delicious feast, with Jeppe scoring an exciting 31-24 win.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

They also won 43-31 on Bowden’s Field in 2023, so Westville’s last win over the Kensington school dates back to 2022, when they blanked the Zebras in Johannesburg and won 15-0.

The visitors will be without their captain and South African Schools’ lock Lwandile Mlaba, and that’s a big blow. In his absence, Jade-Will Koopman captains the side. Mlaba has a wrist injury and will be undergoing a scan on Monday. It could rule him out of the Absa Wildeklawer tournament, where Westville faces Oakdale Landbou and Waterkloof.

Based on their current form, Westville should be favoured against Jeppe, but the 2026 season has been anything but predictable. While Jeppe has made an average start, winning four and drawing three, their record includes a 29-26 victory over Garsfontein. Garsies is the only team to have beaten Stellenberg High thus far, and Stellies have already accounted for Paarl Gimnasium, Grey College, and Paul Roos Gimnasium.

Last weekend, Jeppe scored a morale-boosting 31-24 home victory over King Edward VII (KES). They were, however, beaten in their two matches against KwaZulu-Natal opposition at the Pretoria Boys High 125th Rugby Festival, going down 12-35 to Maritzburg College and 36-40 to Michaelhouse.

They were 12-33 down to ‘House before a late burst made it a tight game, and that’s something that one can take to the bank: Jeppe will fight to the final whistle.

They’re recognised as a side with fantastic flair when playing with quality ball, but Westville, given the same service, possesses one of the fastest, most skilled backlines in the game. They’re well-directed by flyhalf Koopman, and they possess in outside centre, Jadrian Afrikaner, a complete backline player, who has demonstrated time after time in 2026 why he was included in the South African Schools side last year.

Westville could consider themselves unfortunate to have lost their season-opener at Hilton College by four points, going down 35-29, but Hilton, who are unbeaten, are an impressive unit. They beat Australia’s Nudgee College 17-12 after Nudgee had handed Grey College a 29-26 loss.

Since that setback, Westville has been on a roll, racking up five wins on the trot, including winning a slugfest against Northwood last weekend 35-29. The Knights are a hard-nosed outfit, and they matched the Griffins with five tries apiece.

The question to be answered is how much did that win take out of Westville? Not only do they have to deal with Jeppe’s onslaught, but they’ll also have to contend with the high altitude of Johannesburg.

The first of two clashes this season in one of Border’s most famous rivalries unfolds on the Rec Ground in Komani on Saturday when Queen’s College puts their reputation on the line against their old foes from Qonce, Dale College.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

The match, which falls on Queen’s College’s 168th Reunion, could give a strong indication of who will reign in the region this year, with the home side aiming to continue a streak that saw them emerge as the best Eastern Cape team of 2025.

They have a number of players back from that side, so it will be a case of trying to quickly find their rhythm against a Dale team, which has been highly competitive thus far in 2026, recording four wins and two losses in their six matches.

The visitors, too, will be hurting after going down 12-24 at home to Grey High last weekend. Saturday’s showdown in Komani offers them the perfect opportunity to jump back onto the winning horse.

One thing is certain, though: there is no easy path to victory at the Rec, a venue of pain for many visiting teams over the years.

Queen’s enjoyed an unbeaten run at their home ground last year, and the school’s rugby legacy will ensure they remain committed in defence of that proud record.

Another blockbuster takes place in East London when Selborne College hosts Graeme College, the Eastern Cape’s top-performing side this year.

Under the captaincy of Erin Nelson and featuring the predatory instincts of fullback Lucritia Magau, the Makhanda side has produced some thrilling rugby, winning their six matches thus far. Last weekend, they underlined their attacking nature with a 48-10 demolition of Port Rex.

They return to East London for a clash against a perennially tough team in Selborne, who, despite some off-field drama swirling around their heads this week, will be fully motivated to show they can produce where it matters most – on the field.

Although it has not been a successful season for Selborne so far, Graeme’s coach, Jonty van der Meulen, is far too astute to see that as a factor. There’s no such thing as a weak Selborne side, and the Graemians will have to be on point in all facets to return home with another victory.

Hudson Park travels to Cradock for a showdown with Marlow Agricultural in a clash which could go down to the wire.

The Hudsonians were a bit slow out of the blocks against Cambridge last weekend, and if they give the Wolramme that sort of latitude, it could be a tough afternoon in the Karoo.
