A hat-trick of braces set the Gimmies juggernaut in motion as they cruised to a 61–10 victory over Hoërskool Noordheuwel in the sixth match of day two.

The sustained onslaught left Nories scrambling and forced them to endure a punishing defensive workload that sapped their energy. No one epitomised Gim’s dominance more than blindside flank Dirk Hugo.

Hugo was the first of a trio of players to cross the whitewash twice. Soon, he was followed by his fellow flank, Corné Niemand, and lock Bernhardt Schulze, which underlined the control exerted by the Paarl pack.

Flyhalf Louis Koen was clinical from the tee, missing just one attempt at goal, and that accuracy helped to earn him the Player of the Match accolade.

Earlier in the day, Danie Botma set Affies’ A Field alight with a hat-trick of tries in Hoërskool Menlopark’s emphatic 46-28 statement victory over Boland Landbou.

Botma’s midfield partnership with seasoned inside centre Dylan Stumke posed a potent threat, and it’s one to which Menlo’s future opponents will have to pay close attention. Stumke, too, crossed the whitewash to add another five points to the local side’s tally.

Tighthead prop Tiaan Malan stood out for the Western Cape outfit, despite the defeat. His tireless work in the trenches brought him a well-earned brace of tries.

Divan Meyer impressed in the midfield. Although he operated largely in the shadow of Menlopark’s dominant centre pairing, he exhibited intelligent running lines and dependable goal-kicking, qualities that ultimately proved insufficient to swing the result in his side’s favour.

Goals galore and statement wins mark Nomads’ dramatic opening day

If day one of the Nomads Hockey Festival proved anything, it’s that the forthcoming season will be fiercely competitive and no team should be taken lightly. On Saturday, the opening day of the festival, preconceived ideas about teams were blown out of the water.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools.

There were shock results, unbeaten records shattered, and high-scoring encounters that left many hockey enthusiasts at Pretoria Boys High open-mouthed in shock.

Wynberg Boys’ High delivered the first hammer blow by edging out Jeppe High School for Boys 1-0 in the opening game.

It was a hotly contested battle, decided by a late goal from Zachariah Booley. Before the fixture, Jeppe had not tasted defeat in over 20 months after going on an impressive unbeaten run in 2025.

In their second match of the day, Jeppe bounced back and brushed aside Kearsney College 2-0, courtesy of goals by Kade Lottering and Tshimologo Mogale. Wynberg, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with St John’s College to keep their unbeaten record at the festival intact.

Another side that impressed was Gqeberha’s Grey High School. Under the guidance of coach Andrew Beynon, they produced a thrilling attacking masterclass to overrun King Edward VII (KES) 8-4 before getting past the hosts 2-1 later in the day.

Against KES, the experienced Keegan Le Roux and Logan Meyer netted twice each, while Dante Elkington and James Chree also got their names on the score sheet.

There were also debut goals for Michael Gillies, the brother of Kerrin Gillies, who is currently tearing it up at the St Mary’s Waverley Festival for Collegiate Girls’ High. David Stevenson also scored his first goal for the side.

There was nothing to separate Affies and Hilton College as the sides played out to a 2-2 draw. Photo: Khosi Mmutle

The hosts, PBHS, showed promise and resilience on Saturday. In their opener, they defeated a never-say-die Grey College side in a humdinger of a clash thanks to a hat-trick by Bongai Vuyeqeba.

Marko Bosch struck twice for the Bloemfontein boys, and they had an opportunity to equalise in the final chukka when they were awarded a penalty corner. The injection was mistrapped, however, and that chance went begging.

St John’s College showed strong character to come from behind to snatch a 2-1 win over Maritzburg College. Matthew Ireland and Scott Bray were on target for the Johannesburg school in a welcome win after they went down to KES a week ago.

Hilton College struggled somewhat, but they weren’t beaten. They played to a goalless draw with Selborne College before holding Affies to a 2-2 draw. Kean Cornelissen and Rudolph Thiart scored for Affies, while Ben Wilson slotted two cracking goals for Hilton.

Day two’s action will kick off with a clash between Affies and Grey High. Maritzburg College will battle Grey College, while the hosts lock horns with Selborne and Kearsney, respectively.

Oranje, Hoërskool Waterkloof, Rhenish Girls’ High, and Collegiate Girls’ High established themselves as front-runners for the title at the St Mary’s Waverley Hockey Festival on Friday.

The quartet dominated their respective pools and remains undefeated in the annual showpiece.

Waterkloof strung together a four-match winning streak on the second day to storm to first place in Pool A ahead of the overnight leaders, St Mary’s DSG Kloof, who recorded a win, a draw, and a defeat in their three outings.

Waterkloof recorded tight 1-0 victories over three KwaZulu-Natal schools – The Wykeham Collegiate, Durban Girls’ College, and St Mary’s DSG Kloof. Coach Omari Pienaar-Geyer’s charges then put a bow on their performances by beating Parel Vallei 4-0 in their final Pool A match.

Klofies finished their round one campaign with 19 points from six wins and a draw. St Mary’s DSG Kloof, the defending champion, was in second place with 14 points from four wins, two draws, and a single loss.

Oranje carried on from where they left off on day one. The Bloemfontein ladies began their day with a 2-1 win over Paarl Gimnasium, followed it up with a 3-0 triumph over Bloemhof, and then ended their round one campaign with a 1-0 victory over Reddam House Constantia.

Those three wins meant that they finished their Pool B campaign with 19 points from six victories and a draw. The six-time winners of the festival scored 16 goals and conceded only once. Paarl Gimnasium placed second in the pool after recording four wins, two draws, and one loss.

Collegiate was indomitable in Pool C. The ladies from Gqeberha scored 15 goals and conceded only one in four matches on Friday. Coach Michael Abrahams‘ charges began their day with a 2-1 win over Eunice, then went on a goal-scoring rampage, with back-to-back 4-0 wins over Penryn and Somerset College before firing five unanswered goals past Windhoek High.

They completed their round one matches with 17 points, scoring five wins and two draws. Menlopark ended second in Pool C, with their four victories and three draws giving them 15 points.

Rhenish won three and drew one on day two of the festival to bag first place in Pool D. The Stellenbosch school defeated Herschel 2-1, edged out St Anne’s 1-0, and beat Pearson 2-0, before recording a goalless draw with Our Lady of Fatima in their final match, which left them with 15 points fom four wins and three draws.

Pool D was hit hard on the opening day, Thursday, by matches that were called off because of lightning, with those matches being scored as goalless draws. Thus, Our Lady of Fatima placed second with two wins, five draws, and 11 points.

LAGOS: South Africa under-19 Women experienced a seven-wicket defeat to Nigeria in the second semi-final of the Patricia Kambarami Cup at the TBS Cricket Oval in Lagos on Friday. The hosts will now face Rwanda in Saturday’s final.

Lillian Ude led the charge with the ball, returning figures of three for six as Nigeria dismissed the SA U19s for 66 in 17 overs. The YellowGreens then chased down the target comfortably, reaching 67/3 in 9.5 overs to secure their place in the final.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, South Africa endured a difficult start as Ude, Peace Usen (2/18) and a run-out combined to remove the top order. The visitors were reduced to 6/5 inside four overs in an early collapse.

The SA U19s managed to recover to 33/5 by the ninth over, thanks to a 27-run partnership between Ashley Barnard (15) and wicketkeeper-batter Jae-Leigh Filander (13).

That stand was ended by Anointed Akhigbe (1/19), who accounted for Barnard. Further contributions from Daneli Boshoff (16) and Ashleigh van Wyk (12)* helped South Africa edge past the 50-run mark, but regular wickets continued to stall their progress.

With Nigeria in control, Ude, Shola Adekunle (1/7) and captain Lucky Piety (1/1), along with another run-out, wrapped up the innings on 66 all out in the 17th over.

In reply, Nigeria made a confident start through openers Amusa Muheebat (15) and Victory Igbinedion (18), who guided the hosts to 33/0 at the end of the powerplay before spinner Ziya Mohanlall (1/26) made the breakthrough.

A run-out involving Mohanlall then removed Muheebat to leave Nigeria on 40/2 in the eighth over, but the hosts remained firmly in charge of the chase.

Esther Sandy (5) and Piety (18)* steered Nigeria closer to the target, taking the side to within four runs of victory. Although Boshoff (1/4) claimed the wicket of Sandy in the ninth over, it only delayed the outcome.

Nigeria completed the chase soon after to book their place in the final on home soil.

South Africa will face Zimbabwe Under-19 Women in the third-place play-off on Saturday, 28 March, ahead of the final.

    Puntemakers:

HTS Drostdy 43 (29) – Tries: Anwill Jacobs (2), Darren Makeza (2), Werno Ramsauer, Tristan Syster. Conversions: Jano van Deventer (5). Penalty: Van Deventer.  EG Jansen 24 (5) – Tries: Werner Breytenbach (2), Jaco Engelbrecht, Aljay Olivier. Conversions: Renaldo October, Juan van Aswegen.

Garsfontein‘s Neil de Kock might never again experience a moment to rival the one he produced 30 seconds before the final whistle at the 2026 Noord/Suid tournament at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool in Pretoria on Friday.

Relive all the action live on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

The Garsiesspeedster beat three Stellenberg defenders on his way to the tryline to help the Bere snatch a last-gasp  21-20 victory over the Jade Brigade.

When he touched down, it was the first time that Garsfontein had led in the most physical match of the day.

Stellenberg’s talisman and chief playmaker, Ethan van Biljon, controlled most of the match. He accounted for 15 of his side’s 20 points, which were all scored in the first half, crossing for a try, and also adding two penalties and two conversions.

Despite finishing on the losing side, Van Biljon was named the Player of the Match.

The Jade Brigade’s scoreless second half came back to bite them at the death. De Kock’s match-winning try was preceded by a crucial score from flank Stefan van der Vyver, which was a fitting reward for his relentless work rate across the full 70 minutes. His contribution proved vital to Garsfontein’s victory in the most compelling fixture of the day.

King Edward VII School (KES), meanwhile, threatened a comeback, but a late try from the KwaggasHeiliano Beukes sealed a hard-fought 30–17 victory for Hoërskool Outeniqua.

The Red Army got off to a blistering start, with tighthead prop Tswaledi Phasha, who delivered a powerful performance, crossing for a try.

Stung, the Kwaggas responded swiftly. Wing Ray-Jordan Schoeman and the powerful inside centre, Jade Lottering, crossed the whitewash in quick succession, which helped Outeniqua to seize and maintain control for the remainder of the match.

KES also produced two tries in quick succession, scored by fullback Asa Mgwatyu and blindside flank Naledi Phiri. Beukes, though, ensured a victory for the south with his late try moments before the final whistle.

By claiming a 13-point win, Outeniqua has set up an enticing clash against Hoërskool Waterkloof on Monday after Klofies outplayed Diamantveld 45–7.

Thirteen tries to four revealed the northern sides’ early dominance on Friday, the opening day of the NMI Toyota Noord/Suid Rugby Tournament, which has returned to Pretoria’s Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool this year.

The rejuvenated Rhinos of Hoërskool Nelspruit ran in five tries in their opening victory over Hoërskool Framesby, from Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape.

Nellies asserted control early, laying the foundation for success with a powerful opening spell driven by their big hitters up front.

The lock pairing of Dirk-Arnold Joubert and Christiaan Botha, combined with the attacking impetus of dynamic eighthman Vian Louw, ensured the Lowveld side dictated proceedings from start to finish.

As the curtain fell on the second match of the opening day, Nelspruit’s exciting fullback Rhandzu Mkhabela was named the Player of the Match. Renowned across Mpumalanga for the electricity he brings from the backfield, Mkhabela lit up the tournament’s big stage, causing the crowd to take notice.

To complement his sharp attacking display, he was equally assured in defence, providing an uncompromising final line as the Rhinos closed out a commanding performance.

In the opening fixture of the tournament, Hoërskool Zwartkop captain David van Jaarsveld crossed the whitewash twice as the Vikings marked their debut with a commanding 50–14 victory over Bethlehem Voortrekker, scoring eight tries.

Van Jaarsveld combined superbly with the Player of the Match flyhalf Tilon Baron and orchestrated proceedings in the midfield, steering Zwartkop’s expansive and incisive attacking display.

Van Jaarsveld, in particular, was devastating when carrying the ball. His powerful, bullocking runs repeatedly split the defence and brought him 10 points after two deserved visits behind the Voortrekker tryline.

Up front, the reliable hooker Regan Blignaut set the tone for a dominant Vikings pack. His powerful carries stood out as he consistently punched holes deep in Voortrekker’s defensive line, making metres well beyond the gainline.

Blignaut was ably supported by second rower Jethro Le Roux, who is one of 14 players returning to the Vikings 1st XV in 2026. Le Roux capped his industrious performance with a superb try, bursting through the defensive line with an attacking run that left even the centres scrambling.

  • Breaking down the GDL by the numbers: goals and assists

Breaking down the GDL by the numbers: goals and assists

Three weeks into the 2026 Gauteng Development League (GDL) season, the statistics are impressive, with 75 goals already recorded in the u19 division.

Siwelele, the former SuperSport United, is currently atop the division, with three wins and nine points after an impressive start to their campaign.

Any uncertainties that may have surrounded Siwelele have been quickly dispelled. Still, a long journey awaits them, with the 2026 champions set to be crowned in November.

The title-holders, Mamelodi Sundowns, are in third place after suffering a defeat in week two, when they lost 0-1 against Randburg, for whom Junior Mutunga scored the only goal of the match.

Last season’s runner-up, Highlands Park, who won the title in 2023 and 2024, have made a poor start and, surprisingly, prop up the table after three matches. They’ve scored only once while conceding six times.

In the past, the Lions of the North have made slow starts before building powerful momentum, which carried them to the title. But none of those starts have been as rough as the first three matches of their 2026 campaign. Although the sample size is small, there are valid concerns about the regular title contenders.

Sfiso Mnguni, the coach of Highlands Park, told SuperSport Schools Plus last year, shortly after narrowly losing out on the title, that he intended to promote younger players to the u19 division. That could explain the club’s sluggish start. Mnguni’s squad has an opportunity to reverse their fortunes this coming weekend when they take on the Prestige Football Development Academy.

Prestige has also made a stuttering start, losing two and drawing one match, while Highlands Park has no points after three defeats. For both sides, their weekend clash offers a chance to bag a first win and an opportunity to get in on the goal-scoring action.

    Sharp Shooters after three weeks

This season, Bafana Ba Style and Kaizer Chiefs lead the goal-scoring tallies with eight goals each. Both have demonstrated strong attacking depth. Sundowns’ Tebogo Moreri is the team’s top scorer, with his performances highlighted by a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Rockefvs.

Moreri is not the sole player to have scored a hat-trick this season. Msimango, from Chiefs, also scored three times in a 6-2 win over Randburg last weekend. Moreri and Msimango are being chased by RESA’s Bandile Sithole, who scored a brace against Panorama.

While goal scorers tend to capture the spotlight, they need others to put them in a position to score. Sivuziwe Lonzi, from Sundowns, provided a pair in his side’s 5-0 win over Rockefs. His teammate, Kgaogelo Monanyane, also has two assists so far, while Thando Singo and Junior Masoeu have contributed one each.

Despite being the GDL’s leading scorers, both Chiefs and Sundowns have already lost a game each in the first three matches of the season. The log leaders, Siwelele, have scored seven times and conceded only twice.

They’ve enjoyed contributions from different players. including Siyabonga Msimango, and Lebohang Mobe. They were both on the scoresheet in Siwelele’s season-opening 2-0 win over Jomo Cosmos.

The Pretoria club’s standout players thus far include Lwande Yende, who scored against Wits Junior. Mobe and Msimango also bagged their second goals in Siwelele’s 3-2 win over the Johannesburg club. Onthathile Lemao laid on two of those goals, while Unathi Achusi set up the other.

In week four of the GDL, Kaizer Chiefs face a tough challenge on Sunday from the unbeaten Kathorus Hyper Academy, who dropped points in their first match, a draw against Prestige. They’ve added two wins since then.

Siwelele will be focused on extending their lead at the top. They tackle the Africa School of Excellence, which has recorded one win, one loss, and one draw in three outings. Siwelele heads into the clash favoured to score a fourth victory in succession.

On Saturday, ‘Downs, tackle Jomo Cosmos. EzeNkosi, who are in 10th place, also have one win, one loss, and one draw from three matches.
