  • Top guns to clash at Nomads Hockey Festival

Top guns to clash at Nomads Hockey Festival

The final weekend of March typically signals the start of a vibrant and action-filled festival season.

This year is no exception, with several major boys’ hockey festivals set to get underway in various parts of the country.

The Founders Hockey Festival takes place at Queen’s College in Komani, while the Belgotex Sport Coastal Cup will be hosted at the Riverside Hockey Club in Durban.

Meanwhile, the Nomads Hockey Festival will be hosted by Pretoria Boys High (PBHS) from 28 to 30 March. The festival, which features some of the country’s top sides, also forms part of the school’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

Ahead of the big event at PBHS, SuperSport Schools Plus takes a look at the teams in attendance.

    Gauteng teams

Pretoria Boys High (PBHS) and their neighbours and rivals, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), will represent the Noordvaal region.

Both have made slow starts to the season. This past weekend, PBHS went down 2-3 against St Stithians College, while Affies showed grit and fight in their 2-4 loss against Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch.

The festival will provide the teams’ coaches, Jacques Klopper (PBHS) and Jaydon Lincoln (Affies), with a chance to bounce back while testing out combinations.

Johannesburg will be represented by Jeppe High School for Boys, King Edward VII (KES), and St John’s College.

Jeppe has made a bright start to coach Gareth Heyns’ tenure, winning two of their three matches.

They defeated St Benedict’s College 3-0 in a gripping contest before playing out a nail-biting 2-2 draw with St Stithians. Last Friday, the boys from Kensington beat St David’s Marist Inanda 4-1, but coach Heyns will be the first to admit there is still plenty of work to be done.

KES, similar to Jeppe, has a new face in the dugout in the form of Siya Sityana, who led Jeppe to an unbeaten season in 2025. The Red Sticks beat St John’s College 4-0 last week, with Blaine Candy netting a hat-trick and Andrew Arouca joining him on the scoresheet.

    KwaZulu-Natal teams

Teams from KwaZulu-Natal will be out to make a big statement at Nomads. Hilton College, Kearsney College, and Maritzburg College will fly the province’s flag.

Hilton showed character in their season opener, coming back from 0-1 down to beat Westville Boys’ High 2-1.

That’s the type of grit and mentality that coach Damian Kimfley will demand at Nomads. He will look to experienced players like Tadi Hove and captain Robert Burman to lead the way.

To start their season, Kearsney, coached by the highly regarded Keegan Pearce, went down at Clifton College before scoring successive victories over St Charles and Glenwood, so their confidence will be on the up.

On Saturday, they powered to a 7-2 win over Glenwood on the Mason Astro, so their sharpshooters’ eyes appear to be in. Standing in their way at Nomads will be Jeppe, Affies, KES, and St John’s.

Maritzburg College has flown under the radar, but they’ve played some impressive hockey early in the season, moving the ball impressively around the park.

After snatching a 2-2 draw with Clifton, College went 0-1 down at halftime against Westville on the past weekend, but then rallied to score a 3-1 win. They tackle Selborne, KES, Grey College and Jeppe.

This early in the season, it is difficult to ascertain which schools are the frontrunners in KZN but the performances of Kearsney, Hilton, and Maritzburg College at Nomads will provide valuable insight into their strengths in 2026.

    Eastern Cape teams

Selborne College and Grey High School will carry Eastern Cape hopes in Pretoria. In 2024, both were unbeaten when Maritzburg College hosted Nomads. They’ll face a tough challenge trying to match those sparkling records.

Grey missed out on Nomads last year because they were on a tour of The Netherlands, while Selborne endured an up-and-down 2025 campaign. They, however, concluded it as a much-improved team, which was playing some very good hockey.

Coaches Andrew Beynon (Grey) and KJ Friend (Selborne) will be pleased with the preparations they’ve had before Nomads.

Both sides shook off the early-season rust at the Tony Godding Festival in East London, where Grey defeated Selborne, Eldoraigne, and St Andrew’s School.

Selborne, meanwhile, picked up wins over Jim Fouché and Sasolburg before sharing a thrilling 3-3 draw with Grey College.

    Free State – Grey College

Grey College will feel it’s their time to shine in 2026.

Headmaster Braam van Wyk has taken over as the 1st XI’s head coach after Dalan Phillips returned to Pearson High. Van Wyk will be assisted by Jayden Leech, who played for the side just two seasons ago.

Grey College has a massive opportunity to stake a claim as one of 2026’s top teams, but they face a stiff schedule, which includes taking on Pretoria Boys High, Affies, Maritzburg College, and Hilton College.

The retention of key players, including Raphael Kambanis, Wian Griesel, and SA Schools’ star Neilyandro van Schalkwyk, will help their cause.

In their last outing, coach Van Wyk’s side drew 2-2 with Hoërskool Waterkloof.

They have been a little loose on defence at times early in the season. Such lapses will cost them dearly at Nomads, so they’ll be focused on tightening up.

Michaïl Tarentaal will be in goal for Wynberg this season. Photo: Wynberg Hockey

Western Cape – Wynberg Boys’ High

Many of the Western Cape top guns will be at either the Belgotex Sport Coastal Cup or at the Founders Festival. Wynberg Boys’ High, though, will be at Nomads.

The Cape Town school, because it travels from so far, will arrive as an “unknown”, and that places them in a position to pull off some upsets.

They’ll be led by coach Devin Stanton, who is also part of the South African Men’s coaching staff, assisted by Ben Wiley.

Wynberg bade farewell to some talented players last year, but they have retained some experienced players in their ranks, who will be required to step up in 2026.

Chad Julius is one of those, alongside Mustapha Kajee and the talented Michail Tarentaal, who is also the captain of the Wynberg cricket 1st XI.

The challenges they face in Pretoria will be a good test for Wynberg and excellent preparation for the tests that lie ahead in the highly competitive Western Cape.

The St Mary’s Waverley’s first team is braced for stiff competition at the 2026 edition of the St Mary’s Waverley Hockey Festival. Photo: St Mary’s Waverley on Facebook.

This week, St Mary’s Waverley will open their gates to welcome 32 of the country’s top hockey-playing schools to the 25th edition of the St Mary’s Waverley Hockey Festival.

The festival, which runs from 25 to 28 March, began as a one-day event in 2000. It is now a four-day extravaganza that attracts schools from across South Africa.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

The teams will get their campaigns underway in four pools of eight. They’ll play seven pool matches each before the competition splits into different sections.

The defending champions, St Mary’s DSG Kloof, will kick the festival off with a match against Parel Vallei on Thursday morning. The ladies from KwaZulu-Natal will be aiming to win the title for a fourth time. Joining them and Parel Vallei in Pool A are their KZN Coastal rivals, Durban Girls’ College, Hoërskool Waterkloof, St John’s DSG, Afrikaanse Hoërmeisieskool, Pretoria (Affies), Roedean School, and The Wykeham Collegiate.

Six-time champions, Oranje will headline Pool B. The ladies from Bloemfontein have to contend with Paarl Gimnasium, Hoërskool Bloemhof, Hoërskool Garsfontein, Clarendon High, St Stithians Girls College, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High, and Reddam House Constantia.

The festival hosts, St Mary’s Waverley, are in Pool C. They face Die Hoërskool Menlopark, St Cyprian’s, Collegiate Girls’ High, Somerset College, Windhoek High, Penryn College, and Eunice High, who are usually among the title challengers.

St Andrew’s School for Girls collected the St Mary’s Festival title in 2012 and 2013, but they haven’t been able to claim it for a third time since. They are in Pool D, where they will battle it out with Rhenish Girls’ High, Our Lady of Fatima, Pearson, St Anne’s DSG, Herschel Girls School, Paarl Girls’ High, and the St Mary’s Waverley Festival XI.

The festival’s format remains unchanged. Matches are 25 minutes in duration. Therefore, the emphasis will be on teams scoring as many goals as possible in the limited time.

A change has been made, though, with the event now featuring promotion and relegation, which will add spice to the competition.

The festival is one of the annual highlights of the schoolgirls’ hockey calendar, with an invitation to compete in it considered an honour. Over the years, the organisers have increased the event to 32 teams. They don’t plan to expand it further. Hence, the introduction of a B section and a promotion and relegation system.

It will pit the top two teams in the B section against the two lowest-ranked teams in the A section. Not only will the title be on the line for the top teams, but a battle to survive relegation awaits those who struggle.

The result is that all matches will be important. There will be little opportunity to take the foot off the accelerator, which will be a win for the spectators and fans. Whether they’re watching at the venue or on the SuperSport Schools App, they’ll be guaranteed all-out action and high-quality hockey.

  • Khaya Mngwengwe takes over as Chairperson of KZNHSFA

Khaya Mngwengwe takes over as Chairperson of KZNHSFA

The Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) season kicks off in mid-April, with Khaya Mngwengwe succeeding Daniel Haswell, who has been instrumental in the development of KZN schools’ football, as the Chairperson of the Association.

Mngwengwe also serves as the Director of Soccer at Glenwood High, where he has played a pivotal role in nurturing the talented Green Machine, guiding them to the Coastal A-League title in both 2023 and 2024.

Those achievements highlight his commitment to KZN football, as does his earning the CAF B Coaching License in 2024.

In an exclusive interview with SuperSport Schools Plus, Mngwengwe said his passion for football began in eMolweni, where he played the game daily, like many of the local boys. He attended Forest View Primary School and represented KZN in cricket and rugby in grade seven.

His athletic skills earned him a scholarship to Westville Boys’ High, where he excelled in cricket, rugby, and football, representing KZN in all three. After graduating, he continued his football career with Rangers and Durban Stars.

His dedication to young talent led him to coaching, starting with a Sports Learnership at Westville Boys’ High in 2011, which was followed by two years at the Sharks Academy.

He then spent over five years as a development coach at AmaZulu, working closely with schools, including Glenwood.

Mngwengwe told SuperSport Schools Plus about AmaZulu’s partnership with Ohlange High School (founded in 1901) and Glenwood (1910), both of which are recognised for their academic excellence. The partnership has, he said, produced rich fruit.

“Having these partnerships allowed AmaZulu to attract boys from outside Durban. Boys were able to get the best of both worlds – an outstanding education system and the best practice from professional football coaches and advocates,” he explained.

He said those partnerships established a healthy environment, which led to both schools qualifying for the national Kay Motsepe Soccer Schools Championship.

While at AmaZulu, Mngwengwe worked closely with Glenwood, guiding them to qualification for the u14 McDonald’s National Tournament and the u15 Coca-Cola Tournament.

When AmaZulu won the DDC Rewired competition during the 2020/21 season – a unique temporary competition created to replace the 2020/21 DStv Diski Challenge due to the Covid-19 Pandemic – a key component of that team were boys from Glenwood and Ohlange High, which showcased the success of their collaboration.

Mngwengwe said winning the DDC Rewired competition reflected the football culture of the schools and AmaZulu’s legacy in uplifting KZN through the club’s commitment to providing top education and football for the boys.

“The club worked hard to get the right people in to work with these kids, such as Thabiso Makhetha, who coached the squad at Glenwood. Now, he is at FC Nomme in Estonia. Darian Wilken is at Raja Casablanca, and Russel Thompson is now the Youth Technical Director at AmaZulu.

You had a young group of coaches who were hungry and were given a chance by Lunga Sokhela, [a prominent South African football Administrator, best known as the General Manager of AmaZulu],” Mngwengwe said.

He said Sokhela understood that he had to invest in development, and that meant developing coaches as well. “He had a vision, and it worked,” he said.

Glenwood Old Boy, Langelihle Phili, who currently plays for Stellenbosch FC, celebrates scoring a goal against Kaizer Chiefs during a 2-1 victory for Stellenbosch at the FNB Stadium in February. Photo: Stellenbosch on Facebook.

Some of the players who turned professional included Msindisi Ndlovu (Marumo Gallants) and Siphesihle Maduna (TS Galaxy), both of whom attended Ohlange High, while Glenwood’s pros included Langelihle Phili (Stellenbosch), Onke Ncama (AmaZulu), and Ntokozo Nzama (Richards Bay).

Mngwengwe noted that many boys are in first-division teams and some are enrolled in universities. Uyanda Makhoba, who is pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town, is among those who have benefitted from the programme.

In 2023, Mngwengwe became Glenwood’s first team coach and was also appointed the school’s Director of Soccer. He also served as the Convenor of Selectors on the KZNHSFA Football Committee.

At the 2025 KZNHSFA Annual General Meeting (AGM), he was elected Chairperson of the organisation, which oversees high school football’s strategic development in KZN. It includes leading leagues, the fostering of partnerships, and the support of young players’ academic and athletic growth.

Ahead of the start of the season in April, Mngwengwe said that he will strive to ensure the effective operation of the association (KZNHSFA). “This is important to me,” he stressed.

He said the KZNHSFA would also explore collaborating with professional clubs in the province, adding that it would also seek partnerships with universities.

He noted that girls’ football is gaining momentum in KZN. He said he wishes to raise awareness of the girls’ game and to help it grow. Mngwengwe pointed out that KZNHSFA is not solely an association for boys.

“It won’t be easy. It will take time, but these are goals that are not impossible to reach,” he concluded.

  • Hugely expanded NMI Toyota Noord/Suid Rugby Tournament features 42 teams

    Photo: Frans Lombard/Actionpix.

A massively expanded NMI Toyota Noord/Suid Rugby Tournament, hosted by Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), kicks off on Friday, 27 March.

Follow all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com) or Channel 216.

The highly-regarded event features 13 new teams. Nine are from north of the Vaal River, while the other four represent the south.

The northern newcomers are Hoërskool Zwartkop, Hoërskool Middelburg, Hoërskool Wesvalia, HTS Middelburg, Hoërskool Klerksdorp, Hoërskool Oos-Moot, Hoërskool Montana, Hoërskool Kempton Park and Hoërskool Transvalia.

The southern sides are Hugenote (Wellington), Hoërskool Strand, Hoërskool Trio and Bethlehem’s Witteberg.

In 2014, the Noord/Suid tournament began with only four schools. Twelve years later, a record 42 teams will be in action across four days.

The expansion includes the addition of the Harlequins Rugby Club to the list of venues. ‘Quins, as they are commonly known, will host several fixtures, primarily involving 2nd XVs, along with other selected matches.

One of the Noordvaal’s most exciting newcomers, Hoërskool Zwartkop, kicks off the proceedings with a showdown against Voortrekker at 09:00 on Friday morning. Zwarries also take on Voortrekker’s fierce Bethlehem rivals, Witteberg, on the final day at Harlequins.

Three enticing clashes highlight the opening day. At 16:30, Garsfontein tackles the exciting Stellenberg at 16:30. The Jade Brigade has an early target on their back after they opened their season with a heart-stopping 20-19 victory over Paarl Gimnasium two weeks ago.

That match is followed by Jeppe High School for Boys taking on last year’s top-ranked side, Paarl Boys’ High, at 18:00. The day’s final fixture features Hoërskool Monument against Paul Roos Gimnasium, skippered by centre Tiaan Basson, at 19:30.

Saturday will also be action-packed, with the same 19:30 timeslot once again the focal point of the day’s matches. The hosts, Affies, lock horns with Oakdale Landbou, with the clash of the Wit Bulle and Bulle expected to be a fearsome, physical contest.

Menlopark will aim for a second unbeaten record at the tournament in as many years, and they, too, begin their campaign on Saturday, taking on Boland Landbou.

Noordheuwel faces a tough challenge against Paarl Gimnasium, while Grey College versus Helpmekaar is another standout fixture, which takes place in the afternoon.

At Harlequins, Wesvalia faces Montana, while Hoërskool Klerksdorp goes up against Hoërskool Kempton Park in two all-Noordvaal clashes.

The Mzawandile Mali XV, a fan favourite in 2025 because of their never-say-die attitude and running rugby, opens their account on Monday at 08:30 with a tough challenge against King Edward VII School (KES). At 13:00, Hoërskool Waterkloof’s Blou Tornado faces Outeniqua’s Kwaggas.

Later in the day, Hoërskool Monument will be put to the test by the Donkies of HTS Drostdy, before Pretoria Boys High runs out against Paul Roos Gimnasium at 17:30. Paarl Boys’ High and Garsfontein conclude the day’s play at 19:00.

At Harlequins, Transvalia faces Hugenote (Wellington), while Oos-Moot takes on Strand in the final two matches of the day.

The final day begins with HTS Middelburg facing Nico Malan at 08:30. At 10:00, Hoërskool Middelburg and Wesvalia do battle in another all-Noordvaal clash.

Other fixtures include Noordheuwel against Oakdale, and Menlopark against Paarl Gimnasium, before Grey College faces up to Stellenberg in the penultimate match.

The tournament concludes on Tuesday evening, at 19:00, when Affies takes on Hoërskool Durbanville.

LAGOS: Rwanda claimed a thrilling one-run victory over the South Africa Under-19 Women in their rain-affected encounter at the Patricia Kambarami Cup in Lagos on Sunday.

Clarisse Umutoniwase top-scored for Rwanda with 26 off 21 balls, while Fanny Utagushimaninde added 24 to help their side post 101/7 in 14 overs. South Africa then fell agonisingly short in the chase despite a fighting 34 from captain Mieke van Voorst.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Rwanda lost two early wickets in the powerplay, with Ashleigh van Wyk (2/22) and Miya Lalor (2/25) making the initial breakthroughs to leave the opposition on 17/2 in the third over. A crucial partnership between Utagushimaninde and Umutoniwase then helped Rwanda recover.

The pair added 30 runs for the third wicket to move Rwanda to 47/2 before Daneli Boshoff (2/19) claimed two wickets, while Jezé Campher (1/10) and Van Wyk also struck to reduce the Rwandans to 81/6 in the closing stages of the innings.

An important late contribution from Shakira Muhoza (13) and Alice Ikuzwe (6), worth 19 runs, helped Rwanda reach the 100-run mark. The side in blue eventually closed on 101/7, with Muhoza becoming Lalor’s second wicket of the match.

In reply, South Africa made a measured start through openers Ashley Barnard (21) and Boshoff (7), reaching 29/0 after four overs before Boshoff was stumped off the bowling of Ikuzwe (2/21).

Despite that breakthrough, the SA U19 Women continued to apply pressure, with Campher (13) and Barnard guiding the South Africans to 45/1 after six overs before Rwanda hit back with two quick wickets.

Diane Bimenyimana (1/16) and Rosine Irera (1/17) then bowled Barnard and Campher respectively, before Van Voorst and Van Wyk (10) combined in a 39-run stand for the fourth wicket to keep South Africa firmly in contention.

With South Africa on 92/3 in the penultimate over, Rwanda held their nerve under pressure. Ikuzwe claimed the key wicket of Van Wyk before Bimenyimana conceded just seven runs in the final over to seal a narrow victory and move Rwanda to the top of the league standings.

The SA U19 Women will be back in action on Tuesday, 24 March, when they face Zimbabwe Under-19 Women at the TBS Cricket Oval.

Pheiffer’s 25-point haul sinks Affies in King Price Derby thriller

TRAVIS PHEIFFER (with ball), flyhalf of Paul Roos Gimnasium, produced a prolific performance as he scored 25 points in his side’s 45-28 victory over Affies in Stellenbosch: PHOTO: Charmaine Sander

Paul Roos Gimnasium’s flyhalf, Travis Pheiffer, produced a superb performance to help his side to a 45-28 victory over the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool of Pretoria in their King Price Derby Series clash at the Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch.

It would be easy to just state Pheiffer’s prolific point scoring during the match as he scored two tries, converted all six of his side’s tries, as well as slotted a penalty for a personal contribution of 25 points.

Pheiffer’s first try came after a perfectly timed interception, while he also displayed his distribution skills with fullback, Kyle Snyers’ try. Snyers sliced through Affies’ defence like a warm knife through butter after being put into possession by Pheiffer.

The flyhalf was not surprisingly named King of the Match for his performance on the day. The try by Snyers was also named the Suzuki Game Changer moment.

The home side led 24-11 at the break. The visitors from Pretoria fought back in the second half to bring the deficit to only 24-23 after their wingers Joshua Gouws and Dandré Brink dotted down.

Brink’s try could have easily swung the momentum in his side’s favour as he rounded off after receiving the ball just inside his own half. His father Helgard Brink represented the Blitzbokke in his career.

Dandré has also made a name for himself on the athletics track as he boasts a best time of 52.58 seconds in the 400m-hurdles. This is also the quickest time in South Africa this year for Boys u17 so far.

Gous completed a brace of tries as he also scored his side’s only try in the first half.

The last time these two sides met in Stellenbosch was back in 2015 when Damian Willemse was Paul Roos’ flyhalf, while Ruan de Swardt was his direct opposition. Paul Roos came out on top by 29-12 on the day.

Since then, Willemse helped the Springboks to be crowned World Champions twice, while De Swardt has represented the Proteas in test cricket.

Affies’ captain and lock, Martin van Niekerk, could also feel more than happy with his performance on the day.

For Paul Roos, their loose forwards Werner de Bruin and Gerard Bekker, together with hooker Lehan Barnard, laid the foundation for the victory in the front.

    Scorers:

Paul Roos Gimnasium 45 (24) – Tries: Travis Pheiffer (2), Werner de Bruin, Kyle Snyers, Albert Nel, Tristan Armitage. Conversions: Pheiffer (6). Penalty: Pheiffer. Affies 28 (11) – Tries: Joshua Gouws (2), Dandré Brink, Martin van Niekerk. Conversion: Reuben Smith. Penalties: Smith (2).

LAGOS: South Africa under-19 Women captain Mieke van Voorst stood out with both bat and ball to lead her side to a 99-run triumph over Ghana in their opening match of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) Women’s T20 International (T20I) Invitational in Lagos on Saturday.

This year’s tournament has been named the Patricia Kambarami Cup in honour of the late ICC Africa Regional Development Manager and Titans Chief Operating Officer

Van Voorst stole the show with an impressive 34-ball 55 (6 fours) alongside Siphokuhle Masilela (37) as the SA U19s posted 168/4. The spinning all-rounder then claimed incredible figures of three for one in her two overs to help dismiss Ghana for 69 in 19.3 overs.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat at the TBS Cricket Oval. Despite losing openers Chanel Venter (8) and Ashley Barnard (8) early in the powerplay to Kate Awuah (2/22) and Earnestina Sagoe (1/26), the junior side recovered from 24/2 through a crucial partnership between Van Voorst and Masilela.

The pair added 84 runs for the third wicket, with van Voorst bringing up her half-century as the SA U19s reached 108/2 after 14 overs.

Although the skipper was eventually dismissed by Awuah for her second wicket of the innings, Masilela combined with Rethabile Nthoba (17*) to keep South Africa’s momentum going. The pair added 22 runs before Rebecca Adotei (1/32) had Masilela caught, leaving the SA U19s on 133/4 with three overs remaining.

Nthoba was then joined by wicketkeeper-batter Jae-Leigh Filander (17*), and the duo added a further 35 runs in the closing stages to steer South Africa to 168/4 in their 20 overs.

In defence of their total, South Africa were equally impressive with the ball. Seamer Bruzaan Goosen (1/18) struck first in the second over, before a brief recovery from Awuah (12) and Rashidatu Salia (12) helped Ghana to 26/1 at the end of the powerplay.

That 23-run stand was ended by a run-out involving Van Voorst and Filander in the seventh over. Salia and Ellen Assante (1) then took Ghana to 43/2 in the 10th over before the South African bowlers sparked a collapse.

Ashleigh van Wyk (1/11), Ziya Mohanlall (2/19) and Van Voorst tore through the middle order, claiming six wickets while conceding just four runs as Ghana slumped to 47/8 in the 14th over.

Kananelo Mokoena (1/9) and Miya Lalor (1/7) wrapped up the innings late on to seal an emphatic victory for the SA U19s.

South Africa will next be in action on Sunday, 22 March, when they face Rwanda at 15:00 SAST in their second round-robin match.

There was early-season joy for Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG), Parel Vallei, and Hoërskool Durbanville on the first weekend of schoolboy hockey action in the Western Cape.

Paul Roos put on a spirited performance to beat Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) 4-2; Parel Vallei edged out Bishops 2-1; and Durbanville claimed the massive scalp of Paarl Gimnasium 5-4.

While the matches ran concurrently, all eyes were on the Edgars Friday Nite Lights clash between PRG and Affies at the Maties AstroTurf.

It was the first competitive outing for both sides after a handful of pre-season encounters.

The match got underway at full throttle when the hosts opened the scoring with seconds played through skipper Seth Paterson.

Paterson intercepted the ball 10 metres into the Affies’ half and dribbled into the circle untouched before slamming it past Erik Botha for the game’s opener.

Affies went on the attack and were rewarded in the third minute after Ruahardt Nienaber found himself in space to tap the ball in on the far post.

The score remained unchanged until the third chukka, where both sides upped the ante.

Affies grabbed the lead after a thunderbolt drag flick from Rudolf Thiart before PRG responded with two goals by Louis Kriel and the ever-present Caleb Cilliers.

Logan Lackay added the final nail to the coffin in the fourth chukka to seal the win.

“We knew it would be tight because it’s an interschools derby, and it’s Affies, a school that has history and tradition,” PRG head coach Michael Baker told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“I’m happy with the character the boys showed and how we responded when we were down. I promised that every game we play this year would be exciting, and we lived up to that.”

Paul Roos will head to Durban for the annual Coastal Cup next week. Coach Baker says there are areas in their game that need improvement.

“We definitely need to work on attacking PCs,” he added.

“I think we had nearly 15 and didn’t score one clean. Most teams might press deep like Affies did tonight, so we need to get more prepared for those scenarios at Coastal Cup.”

    Other matches:

While PRG battled Affies in Stellenbosch, Parel Vallei hosted Bishops in Somerset.

The boys, led by coach Michael van Rensburg, were aiming to maintain their strong start to this season.

At their pre-season festival, PV racked up three wins against Reddam House Constantia 3-0, Outeniqua 2-0, and Worcester Gimnasium 6-1.

They backed those performances up with the 2-1 win against Bishops courtesy of goals by the dangerous Luka Meets.

In Paarl, Hoërskool Durbanville made history after beating Paarl Gimnasium 5-4.

It was Noah Jansen at the forefront of it all, and he scored a hat-trick while Sven Gouwsventer and Robbie Wilson joined the scoring action.

Paarl Boys’ High bagged a win against Outeniqua, while Worcester Gimnasium were also on the right end of the scoreboard after edging Hoërskool Upington 4-2.
